Vietnam vs Cambodia: Which One to Visit? (13 Major Differences)

Both Vietnam and Cambodia are popular destinations in Southeast Asia . We usually recommend you visit both if you have enough holiday time (12-14 days) . These two destinations can be easily visited together because they are geographically close and both small countries.

However, if you don't have enough time and need to choose between the two, then which one should you pick? Here are the main 13 differences for your reference .

  • History and Culture
  • Average stay
  • Food and drink
  • Accommodation

You should choose Cambodia if temples (Angkor Wat), religion, wildlife (elephant sanctuaries), and historical heritage sites are things you are interested in.

You should choose Vietnam if you prefer more diverse experiences such as natural wonders (Halong Bay), colonial history, ancient towns (Hoi An), city life (Ho Chi Minh), floating markets (Mekong Delta), and more.

For a classic itinerary, travelers spend 8-10 nights in Vietnam and 3-4 nights in Cambodia (only Siem Reap) .

1. History and Culture

As neighboring countries, Vietnam and Cambodia have much in common when it comes to history . Vietnam has a bigger cultural contrast than Cambodia.

Vietnam was formerly occupied by China, France, and Japan , thus it's deeply influenced by these countries in terms of religion, food, culture, and architecture.

  • The Vietnamese celebrate the same Lunar New Year as in China.
  • When visiting, you can easily find temples and assembly halls built by Chinese immigrants (mainly from Fujian and Guangdong).
  • The lifestyle in Sapa (northeastern Vietnam) is similar to that in Yunnan (southwestern China).
  • In Vietnam, you will see European and Japanese architecture alongside vendors selling French and local food.
  • Many Vietnamese people feel more comfortable speaking French than English.

Compared to Vietnam, Cambodia is less influenced by other countries. It has received a lot of influence from Indian religion and was possibly influenced by Indian culture in ancient times.

Most Cambodians believe strongly in religion (mainly Buddhism and Hinduism). When in the country, you will see temples nearly everywhere . Angkor Wat is the most famous monument in the country and represents the brilliant ancient civilization of the Khmer.

If you would like to spend some time relaxing on the beach at the end of your tour, Vietnam is more recommended than Cambodia for a better experience and more value for money.

Vietnam has a long coastline from north to south and plenty of options for beautiful beaches. The best beaches in Vietnam include Phu Quoc , Nha Trang , and Danang .

We like Phu Quoc the most for its romantic sunsets, superior hotel options, clean beaches, and serene atmosphere. This is a good option if you're looking for a place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

In Nha Trang and Danang , the beach facilities are good as well, but there are more crowds and tourists from China and other Asian countries.

The most famous beach in Cambodia is Sihanoukville . It was considered to be pristine in previous years, however, at the moment it is hard to get to with the only available flights from Ho Chi Minh, Siem Reap, and Phnom Penh.

Like in most Asian countries, spending around USD180-250 per day per person (including hotels) is enough for a wonderful experience including a private car and guide in Vietnam .

  • 10-Day Best of Vietnam with Mekong Delta : from US$ 2,109 per person
  • 2-Week Vietnam Family Holiday : from US$2,199 per person
  • 15-Day Best of Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam Tour : from US$3,399 per person

The price of traveling in Cambodia is higher than Vietnam by USD 10-20 per day .

  • 12-Day Essential Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam Tour : from US$2,939 per person
  • 14-Day Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos Tour : from US$2,989 per person

4. Average stay

Vietnam has more popular places to go than Cambodia, thus most itineraries spend more time in Vietnam.

Usually, we recommend 8-10 nights in Vietnam . Trips will normally visit all regions of the country including:

  • The north: Hanoi and Halong Bay
  • The center: Hoi An
  • The south: Ho Chi Minh and the Mekong Delta

For more time and deeper exploration, you can consider adding a trip to the terraced fields and minority villages of Sapa (2-3 nights) or Hue (1-2 nights) for the ancient royal culture of Vietnam. >>> How Long to Spend in Southeast Asia (for First Timers)

The most popular destination in Cambodia is Siem Reap where Angkor Wat is located . It takes 3-4 nights to see the main highlights there. Two full days to explore the temples and one day to visit the floating villages (better from October to February when there is a higher water level).

If time permits, you can extend your trip to Phnom Penh to visit the Killing Fields (Choeung Ek), and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21 prison). >>> 2 Weeks in Southeast Asia: Top 5 Itineraries for First-Timers, Couples, and Families

In Cambodia , the weather is similar all over the country.

In Vietnam , the north is usually cooler than the south by 2-3℃ because there are more mountains in the north (especially in Sapa).

Generally, the best time to travel to these two countries is the same. Plan your trip anytime from November to February for comfortable weather (not too hot or too cold) .

Tips : Christmas and New Year (from December 24th to January 2nd) is the high season. During this time, the price of hotels, vehicles, guides, and flight tickets are usually double or even triple that of any other time. We usually suggest you make your bookings at least 3 months in advance to ensure availability and better prices.

The rainy season is from June to October . During this time, you can expect some showers without much effect on sightseeing. Traveling in the rainy season usually means more affordable travel and fewer crowds. There might be flooding in September and October in central Vietnamese cities like Hoi An.

Cruises in Halong Bay can be canceled or affected by typhoons in July and August . These tropical storms may happen in summer but aren't too common.

If you happen to encounter bad weather while in Halong Bay, your cruise company or travel agent will inform you 1-2 days in advance of the cancellation or itinerary change. You can consider Ninh Binh (also has the famous Karst landscape and is 2 hours from Hanoi by road) as an alternative.

Holders of normal passports issued by the following countries do not require a visa to visit Vietnam:

  • Europe : United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Belarus, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Russia, Sweden
  • South and Middle America : Chile, Panama
  • Asia : Japan, South Korea, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Kyrgyzstan, Philippines, Brunei

If you're from USA, Canada or other countries not listed above, applying for an e-visa is the most convenient way to enter Vietnam. Starting from August 15, 2023, Vietnam e-visas are issued to citizens of all countries and territories, and they are issued for multiple entries for up to 90 days . You can now apply for the e-visa online . The e-visa fee is approximately 25 USD, and your application will usually be processed within 3 working days. Applying for an e-visa is efficient and convenient.

To enter Cambodia, you can apply for an E-visa in advance (single entry with a maximum stay of 30 days) or apply for a Visa on Arrival (around USD30).

You should prepare the following documents for a Visa on Arrival .

  • One completed visa application form (fill out on the plane or in the airport)
  • Original passport with at least 6 months validity
  • One recent, passport-sized photograph (2 inches x 2 inches or 35mm x 45mm)

7. Food and drink

Vietnamese food is slightly more famous than Cambodian food.

Vietnamese Pho has gained in popularity all around the world in recent years for its fresh ingredients and satisfying flavors. We recommend having Pho for breakfast as it's a great way to start the day.

There are many choices for drinks in Vietnam including fresh juice, beer, coffee, and tea. Vietnamese coffee is particularly famous and is made with a special slow drip filter then mixed with sweet condensed milk. Vietnam is also famous for its civet cat coffee which is worth a try if you are willing!

Cambodian cuisine is rich in flavor and has been influenced by many different cultures . Rice, vegetables, and fruit are popular ingredients in many dishes. Some examples of typical Khmer food include Fish Amok, Lap Khmer, and Nom Banh Chok.

Cambodia is well known for its fresh fruit juices and unique local beers . As it was once a French colony, you'll also find plenty of tea and coffee.

When traveling with Asia Highlights , you'll be provided with plenty of iced bottled water in the car to help you stay cool in the summer as well as best suitable restaurant/bar recommendations for your free time.

Both countries are safe for travel , but you should always protect your personal belongings and never leave your wallet out or flash large amounts of money in public.

Though Vietnam and Cambodia are safe countries, petty crimes like theft and scams do happen in popular tourist areas.

Do not trust strangers who promise great bargains . Use reliable tour operators. Only use official taxis and transport agencies.

9. Accommodation

Both countries offer different levels of hotels from luxury brands to local guesthouses which you can choose based on your interests and how much you would like to spend. Both countries offer good-value hotels.

Compared to other Asian countries, the cost of hotels in Vietnam is comparatively lower . On average,

  • The cost of a local 4-star hotel is around USD 60 per night.
  • An international 4-star hotel is about USD 100 per night.
  • There are fewer luxury options in the Mekong Delta and Sapa, but a 4-star plus hotel is still easy to find.

Interested in trying a homestay with a private bathroom in Sapa for closer contact with the local minority people ? Just contact us . We will make all the arrangements for you.

The hotel cost and level in Siem Reap are similar to that of major cities in Vietnam (Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh). Due to less development, you might find the hotel facilities in Phnom Penh are not as good as those in Siem Reap.

10. Transport

When flying to Southeast Asian countries from America or Europe, you will always have a layover in China, Japan, Singapore, or South Korea because of the long flight time (around 20 hours). Thanks to the development of the tourism industry in both countries, getting to Vietnam and Cambodia is very convenient from other Asian countries like Thailand, China, and Singapore.

Vietnam has more choices for international flight connections than Cambodia because of its bigger airports in Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi.

From London or Frankfurt, there is a non-stop flight to Hanoi once a week.

If you would like to include both countries in your trip, the flight between Vietnam and Cambodia takes less than 2 hours .

Read details about 3 ways to get from Vietnam to Cambodia: by plane, by boat, or by land .

11. Language

Both Vietnam and Cambodia have their own official languages. English is more widely used in Cambodia because tourism is the country's main industry.

In both countries, you will need to be prepared for the local people to have a thick accent . When I traveled to Vietnam in March 2019, I had 5 guides. All of them spoke fluent English, but 2 of them had an accent (they still could be understood). When we were in the villages without a guide accompanying us, we used Google Translate to communicate with local villagers.

Cambodians speak comparatively better English .

12. Currency

  • Vietnam : Vietnamese Dong (VND) (USD1≈VND23000)
  • Cambodia : Riela (KHR) (USD1≈ KHR4100)

Cambodia is more friendly to the USD . Local people in Cambodia actually prefer to use USD because they have less confidence in Riela. In Cambodia, you can use USD in most situations . After buying something you might receive Riels as change.

In Vietnam, local people prefer Dong over USD . It is easy to convert USD to Dong at the airport or in the jewelry stores in the streets in Vietnam. Withdrawing cash is also conveniently done at ATMs. They accept the most popular cards such as Visa and Master.

13. Wildlife

If you're a fan of animals and adventure, then Cambodia is a good option .

Interested in interacting with gibbons, spotting dolphins, visiting elephant sanctuaries, or bird watching? No problem, Cambodia has plenty to offer in terms of wildlife experiences.

Vietnam or Cambodia: Which is the Best Country for Travel?

Trying to decide between visiting Vietnam or Cambodia ? I feel ya! It is a TOUGH choice. We’ve been to both multiple times and in this post we help you decide.

What’s in our guide to choosing between Vietnam and Cambodia?

Cambodia vs Vietnam. What a hard choice!

Both countries are inexpensive, well organized for tourism, and offer lots of opportunity for adventure, cultural immersion, and basking on the beach.

How is a poor (or wealthy) traveller to choose?

Obviously, if you have all the time in the world, my advice is to travel Vietnam and Cambodia .

But if you have a real life back home that you have to live, then it’s better to just visit one per trip. It would take about six weeks to explore all the best attractions in Cambodia and even longer to see Vietnam’s sights.

You can make a great trip out of 2-4 weeks in either country, though.

So, if you have a month or less to travel in Vietnam or Cambodia, it’s time to decide…

Vietnam or Cambodia: Which Should You Visit?

1. Travel Experiences in Vietnam and Cambodia

vietnam or cambodia

Must-See Highlights

While Vietnam has Ha Long Bay, a natural wonder, Cambodia has Angkor Wat, a man-made sight to behold. Both are bucket-list experiences, both are also overcrowded and expensive! Still, they are worth seeing and so much better if you can get there in shoulder season, so when you’re planning your trip, take that into account.

City Experiences

best hotels Hoi An

For city experiences, the old centre of Hanoi is a fabulous place to wander and marvel at the local culture and living conditions.

Hoi An is also a must-see destination and one that I long to return to as soon as possible!

Cambodia doesn’t have a comparable city experience, with both Siem Reap and Phnom Penh being underwhelming and mostly avoidable, while smaller cities are run-down and lacking in charm.

Find City Experiences →

As far as beaches go, Vietnam has some pretty ones but they tend to be overcrowded and touristy — with many Vietnamese tourists also being drawn to their fabulous beaches. In Cambodia, you’ll get to play out your deserted island fantasies on Koh Ta Kiev or other south coast islands.

best travel experiences

Wilderness and Trekking

In Sapa, north of Hanoi, trekking has become one of the biggest tourist highlight in the country. While going for a walk through the mountains and villages in this region is astonishingly beautiful, it is not exactly adventurous, as you’ll be trekking with hordes of other tourists.

Adventure-seekers will want to find alternative treks in the north or go caving in the fabulous Phong Nha.

In Cambodia, jungle trekking is a wild experience, too. The views tend to be less sensational, as you’re surrounded by dense jungle most of the time, but the experience is a little less polished, meaning you’ll feel more like an adventurer. Just watch out for the leeches!

Let Cambodia Transform You

This FREE don’t-miss list gives you access to the 12 best transformational experiences in Cambodia. Don’t miss out!

I want the list!

Cambodia’s northeastern reaches are home to a dwindling population of Asian elephants. Animal-lovers have a chance to get up close to these incredible animals — and if you’ve never seen elephants before, it’s something you cannot miss.

Vietnam has lots of National Parks which you can explore but chances are you won’t see any wildlife as you tromp through the jungle. You can visit primates up close at the Cuc Phuong National Park Endangered Primates Centre . We’ve never been there but we’ve heard good things.

City Tours and Bike Tours

Both Vietnam and Cambodia offer amazing experiences when it comes to tours, long or short.

In Vietnam, you can:

  • Cycle the Mekong Delta
  • Discover Hoi An by bike and kayak
  • Take an amazing 11-day bike and boat adventure

cambodia bike tour angkor temples

In Cambodia, don’t miss your chance to:

  • Bike the Angkor temples
  • Cycle from Angkor Wat to Cambodia’s south coast
  • Spend 14 days seeing Cambodia’s best sights by bike

If you want to explore Vietnam and Cambodia together, take a Mekong bike and boat adventure from Siem Reap all the way to to Saigon!

Travel Experiences – Vietnam or Cambodia?

When it comes to exciting travel experiences, Cambodia wins. Though Vietnam has lots of incredible places to see and things to do, Vietnam is more touristy and therefore, the travel experiences just aren’t quite as adventurous or remote as we’d like.

There is nothing in Vietnam as iconic as Angkor Wat or as perfectly deserted as Koh Ta Kiev. Cambodia also has Kampot , one of our favourite small towns in the entire world, plus the chance to see almost wild elephants in the north.

2. Transportation in Vietnam and Cambodia

Getting around in both Cambodia and Vietnam is super easy.

You just tell the staff at your hotel or hostel where you want to go and they’ll make all the arrangements for you. All you have to do is be ready on time. This service might cost you a dollar extra but it is almost always worth it to avoid the hassle of going to buy your own tickets.

Usually, if you arrange tickets through your hotel, a mini bus will pick you up at the front door, so you don’t need to walk across town with your luggage.

Transportation in Vietnam

Busses in Vietnam

A well organized bus network links every conceivable spot a visitor would want to go in Vietnam.

  • Quality – Long-distance busses are cheap, generally on time, and usually comfortable.
  • Price – A five or six hour bus ride will cost you around $6, depending where you’re going. A great deal!
  • Bus type – Journeys are usually in a sleeper-style bus, where you can (almost) stretch out on a bunk and might even get some sleep.
  • Safety – Nightmare tales of dangerous drivers and filthy busses are mostly a thing of the past — now busses are, if not luxurious, the best way to get around Vietnam.

Use 12go.asia for routes, times, prices, and booking busses in Vietnam.

Train in Vietnam

There is also a train line that starts in the north and winds its way through coastal communities and then finally heads inland to end up in Ho Chi Minh city. The train is no faster than the bus and is more expensive, so often not the best choice. It can be useful for making the overnight journey from Hanoi to Sapa or for a quick ride from Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne.

Easy rider motorbike in Vietnam

One of my favourite Vietnam experiences was my trip from Hue to Hoi An by motorbike . I have never driven a motorbike in my life but in Vietnam, you can hire a bike with a driver.

You sit on the back watching the world go by while they do all the work. This kind of transportation is ideal for maximum 5 or 6 hours — after that your butt (and possibly the rest of you) will fall asleep!

vietnam or cambodia

Flying in Vietnam

We never recommend flying around inside a country — it is expensive, bad for the environment, and makes you miss huge chunks of fascinating travel. To avoid flying in Vietnam, plan your trip for just the north, centre, or south.

However, if you must fly in Vietnam, there are lots of cheap flights available. But be warned, the low cost airlines in Vietnam (JetStar and VietJet) have a reputation of being late all the time!

We once got to the airport in Nha Trang only to discover that our flight was delayed by 8 hours. Yikes! We quickly re-booked onto Vietnam Airlines and took the financial loss as an expensive lesson.

Find Vietnam Transportation →

Transportation in Cambodia

In Cambodia, the major destinations are served by bus, while more off-the-beaten-track destinations are connected by mini bus. If you’re going way off the tourist map, you may need to hire a motorbike or tuk tuk.

Busses in Cambodia

  • Quality – Long-distance busses are cheap, but usually late, and can be old and uncomfortable. My bus journey from Phnom Penh to Kratie was advertised as 4 hours and took 8. Not cool!
  • Price – a 5 or 6 hour bus ride will be around $10. Still not expensive, but more expensive than Vietnam.
  • Bus type – Bus journeys are usually in a seated bus, which can range in quality from new to well past its prime.
  • Safety – Cambodia’s bus safety record is not great (road accidents are alarmingly common in Cambodia) so it’s worth it to find a reliable bus company. Our favourite was Giant Ibis , which costs a little more but is totally worth it for safety and reliability. Unfortunately, they only cover limited routes in Cambodia.

Use 12go.asia for routes, times, prices, and booking busses in Cambodia →

Mini busses in Cambodia

If you go anywhere besides the major attractions (which you must to get the most out of Cambodia) you will have to take a mini bus. They vary in quality and are almost always late. A mini bus ride can be easy and comfortable, or it can be an all-day adventure, starting with 100 stops around town to pick up babies, chickens, sacks of grain, small motorbikes and more.

Don’t expect to get anywhere quickly in a Cambodian mini bus – but treat the journey as part of the experience.

Long-distance taxis in Cambodia

If you have a decent budget and are travelling in Cambodia with friends or family, hiring a car and driver can be the best way to go. These services tend to be far more reliable than public transportation and will get you everywhere twice as fast.

You can also stop off along the way to see the sights, especially if you hire a driver who speaks English well enough to double as a guide.

Find Cambodia Transportation →

Vietnam vs Cambodia – Transportation

Chalk one up for Vietnam! Their transportation is faster, cleaner, safer, and cheaper. It’s fairly easy to get around Cambodia too, but expect delays and a little more adventure!

3. Food in Vietnam and Cambodia

If you’re a meat-eater, you will probably prefer the food in Vietnam. There are delicious bowls of Pho made with hearty beef broth everywhere you look, lots of fresh seafood, banh mi sandwiches on every corner, and free egg sandwiches for breakfast at most hotels and hostels.

vegan restaurants in hoi an

For vegetarians, vegans, and people who have sworn off meat after visiting a market in Southeast Asia, you’ll probably prefer the food in Cambodia. I know I do! In the tourist areas, it is much easier to find food that is completely vegan — plus, Cambodia curries are incredibly delicious.

That said, both countries have incredible food and I wouldn’t make the choice based on food alone.

Vietnam or Cambodia – Food

This one is a tie. Vietnam and Cambodia both have lots of great food to inspire the foodie adventurer. It’s just a matter of preference!

4. Drinking in Vietnam and Cambodia

Happy hour cocktails.

It’s happy hour again ( and again and again …). In both Vietnam and Cambodia almost every tourist bar and restaurant has happy hour – often lasting most of the day. In many places, 2-for-1 mixed drinks and cocktails can be had for $2.50 or a little more.

Not all cocktails are created equal though. In Cambodia, it can be worthwhile to spend a little more money and make sure you’re getting brand-name alcohol. Bootleg booze is a problem there, so just make sure you’re drinking in popular and well-reviewed bars (and not buying bottles off the back of a scooter).

Beer and craft beer

Vietnam has a long history of brewing beer. Drinking fresh beer (bia hoi) on the street is still one of the major must-dos in Hanoi. A cup of watery bia hoi costs around 50 cents. In Ho Chi Minh City, the craft beer scene is insane. A glass of craft beer will cost you the same as it does in the West, but it’s worth it, especially if the idea of watery lager makes you angry!

hanoi vegetarian

Beer in Cambodia is a bottle of Angkor. It’s fine hot-weather nothing-special beer. But nothing to get particularly excited about.

Vietnam or Cambodia for Drinking?

Because of the craft beer movement taking over the country, Vietnam wins the drinking category! However, there are lots of cheap cocktails to be had in Cambodia, so if you like a cheap drink, Cambodia is better for you.

5. Accommodation in Vietnam and Cambodia

Both Vietnam and Cambodia offer a wide range of accommodation — from basic dorm rooms to astonishingly luxurious resorts — all at relatively bargain-basement prices.

You can get a decent clean place to sleep for $4 or a room in a fancy boutique hotel for $50.

Budget accommodation in Vietnam and Cambodia

In much of Vietnam, it is easy to find a private room in a very nice, spotlessly clean hotel for around $12. The hardest part about finding accommodation in Vietnam is sorting through all the great choices.

In Cambodia, finding those gems is much more of a challenge, though they do exist. On the budget end of the scale, you’re more likely to be roughing it in Cambodia, with things a little less clean and a little less polished for tourists. But rooms tend to be a few dollars cheaper, too.

where to stay in hue

Boutique and luxury accommodation in Vietnam and Cambodia

If you have the budget for a little more luxury, then Cambodia has the edge. Vietnam welcomes lots of wealthy tourists from China, Korea, and Russia, so their luxury properties tend to be busier and therefore be able to charge more.

In Cambodia, the upscale tourist market is smaller, so you can find wonderful resorts and great boutique hotels at the same price as you might pay for a Motel 6 or Best Western somewhere else. This won’t last forever though. More foreign interests are moving into the country and developing Cambodia for mass tourism, so if you’re gonna go, go soon.

(Don’t miss my reviews of Blue Lime and TeaHouse boutique hotels in Phnom Penh) →

Vietnam vs Cambodia – Accommodation

For budget travellers, Cambodian accommodation is marginally cheaper. However, it’s harder to find fantastic budget accommodation in Cambodia, so Vietnam wins this round for budget travellers.

For travellers with a little more expendable cash, Cambodia wins out, since the mid-range and high-end accommodation is more affordable (and usually more stylish and welcoming) than in Vietnam.

6. Dangers and Annoyances in Vietnam and Cambodia

Both Cambodia and Vietnam are very safe places to travel and dangers that are common in the west, like pickpockets and violent crime, are almost non-existent. Bag-snatching can happen in Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City though, so don’t dangle your purse temptingly by the side of a busy road.

Vietnam has really cleaned up its act in the last decade, leaving most of the worst scams and rip-offs in the past. Now, pricing tends to be fair and honest — though you’ll still pay way more in the markets than locals do! Road safety is better too, and there are very few scams to watch out for.

Cambodia, being poorer and not as developed for tourists, has a few more scams and rip-offs to be aware of — starting at the border, where officials will charge you a couple of dollars extra just to enter the country. Many scams are targeted at young men, and involve excessive drinking, drugs, and sex. If you avoid stupid and illegal behaviours, you should be OK.

7. Solo Travel in Vietnam and Cambodia

trekking in cambodia

Vietnam Solo Travel

Solo travel in Vietnam is fun, safe, and inexpensive. Most travel is done by bus, so the ticket price stays the same whether you’re by yourself or in a group. There are plenty of clean, cheap hostels almost anywhere you would want to go. And if you like your privacy, you can get a nice spotless private hotel room for around $12.

It’s pretty easy to meet other travellers, since there are lots of shared activities, like exploring caves or riding the night bus! I have also had great conversations with locals when I’ve ended up being the only one on a tour!

If you’re in the major cities in Vietnam or Cambodia alone, the absolute best way to get around is by Grab Bike . It’s like hiring an Uber, but you get a motorbike instead — something you can’t do with two people!

Cambodia Solo Travel

Solo travel in Cambodia is a little more difficult. Lots of tours, activities, and journeys have to be done by tuk tuk.

If you’re in a group, you can share the cost, making it much cheaper to travel. The quality of accommodation in Cambodia isn’t as good either (and neither is the service) — there were a few times when I felt a little vulnerable and isolated in my dirty home stay or hostel.

Finally, tours in Cambodia can be difficult if you’re on your own. Lots of tours are private tours – which is great if you’re in a group but can be pretty unexciting if you’re alone.

I almost missed out on jungle trekking because I couldn’t find someone else who wanted to go. One other woman stepped in at the last moment which is great, because I would have felt very uncomfortable doing it on my own.

Vietnam vs Cambodia – Solo Travel

Vietnam wins this one, too! Although Cambodia is totally fine for solo travel (more so if you stick to the popular tourist destinations), it’s just a little easier to travel alone in Vietnam.

8. Getting a Visa for Travel in Vietnam and Cambodia

In Cambodia, getting a travel visa is fairly easy. You don’t need to arrange any paperwork ahead of time. You can just show up at the border or the airport and buy a visa then and there. You do have to watch out for border scams in Cambodia and expect to have to pay an extra couple of dollars in “fees” to the border guards. It’s a little annoying but just part of the experience.

For Vietnam, getting a visa is a little more complicated:

  • Most travellers will need to arrange for a pre-approved visa letter through a travel agency in Vietnam (such as myvietnamvisa ). You can present this letter to pick up a visa on arrival at an international airport in Vietnam or to get an e-visa ahead of time.
  • Some passport-holders (including United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, and Germany) qualify for a visa exemption, which allows you to stay 15 or 30 days without a visa, depending on where you’re from.

9. So Which is Better? Vietnam or Cambodia?

By my count, Vietnam beats Cambodia by a long shot. But, if you were to ask which one I prefer to travel in, I’d say Cambodia! Vietnam won this head-to-head because it is easier to travel in… but as we know, worthwhile things are often difficult.

Choose Vietnam if you want a gentler introduction to Southeast Asia that will still wow your senses and blow your mind.

Choose Cambodia if you want to be a little more adventurous, pushing out the boundaries of your comfort zone.

When planning your trip, the weather is an important factor to consider. Both Cambodia and Vietnam have tropical climates, but there are differences in their weather patterns.

Cambodia experiences a tropical monsoon climate, with a rainy season from May to October and a dry season from November to April. The average temperature ranges from 68°F (20°C) to 95°F (35°C), with the hottest months being March and April.

In contrast, Vietnam’s climate varies depending on the region.

The north experiences a subtropical climate with a hot, rainy season from May to October and a cooler, drier season from November to April. Temperatures in the north range from 50°F (10°C) to 90°F (32°C).

Southern Vietnam has a tropical climate, with a wet season from May to November and a dry season from December to April. The south’s temperatures range from 75°F (24°C) to 90°F (32°C).

While visiting Cambodia, you’ll find that the dry season is the best time to go, as it offers more comfortable temperatures and less rain. For Vietnam, the best time to visit depends on the region. The north is more pleasant during the cooler, dry season, while the south is enjoyable during the drier months.

In summary, the weather in Cambodia and Vietnam varies, so it’s essential to plan your trip based on the destination and the time of year you prefer for your travel experience.

Safety is a crucial consideration when choosing a travel destination. Both Cambodia and Vietnam are generally safe for tourists, but there are some concerns to be aware of.

In Cambodia, petty crime like pickpocketing and bag-snatching can occur, particularly in crowded areas. However, violent crime is rare, and tourists are rarely targeted. It’s essential to take precautions, such as keeping your belongings secure and being aware of your surroundings.

Vietnam also experiences petty crime in tourist areas, so similar precautions are recommended. Additionally, traffic in Vietnam can be chaotic, so it’s important to exercise caution when crossing streets or renting a motorbike.

One unique concern in Cambodia is the presence of unexploded landmines in rural areas. While these areas are not typical tourist destinations, it’s important to stay on well-traveled paths and avoid venturing into unknown territory.

In Vietnam, the main non-crime concern is food hygiene. To avoid getting sick, only eat at reputable establishments and avoid consuming uncooked or undercooked food.

In conclusion, both Cambodia and Vietnam are relatively safe destinations for tourists. By being aware of potential risks and taking appropriate precautions, you can enjoy a safe and memorable trip to either country.

Budget is an essential factor when deciding between Cambodia and Vietnam for your next vacation. Both destinations offer affordable travel experiences, but there are differences in costs.

Overall, Cambodia and Vietnam are both affordable travel destinations. However, Cambodia may be slightly more expensive for accommodations and transportation, while Vietnam offers a lower cost for meals and some activities.

Which Is Better – Cambodia or Vietnam?

In conclusion, choosing between Cambodia and Vietnam depends on your preferences and priorities as a traveler. Both countries offer rich history, culture, and stunning natural beauty.

If you’re interested in exploring ancient temples and immersing yourself in a unique, vibrant culture, Cambodia may be the better choice. Its iconic Angkor Wat and other historical sites provide unforgettable experiences.

On the other hand, Vietnam is known for its diverse landscapes, ranging from pristine beaches to lush mountains. This destination offers a variety of attractions and activities, making it an excellent choice for travelers seeking adventure and exploration.

For beach lovers, Vietnam’s long coastline and numerous beach destinations may be more appealing than Cambodia’s smaller selection.

When it comes to dining, nightlife, and shopping, both countries offer exciting options. However, Vietnam may have an edge in terms of the variety and quality of its culinary scene.

If family-friendliness and children’s activities are important to you, consider the specific attractions and facilities available in each country to decide which destination best suits your family’s needs. In terms of cost, both countries are budget-friendly, but Vietnam might be slightly more affordable overall.

Ultimately, the best destination for you will depend on your interests, travel style, and what you hope to experience during your vacation.

Cambodia Vs Vietnam: 20 Reasons To Visit One Over The Other

The Cambodia vs Vietnam dilemma is one that Asia aficionados struggle with the most, since there are reasons to visit both.

Southeast Asia is one of the most travel-friendly regions in the world. Their tourism is booming, the prices are low compared to our standards and the weather is always great.

However, moving around big countries with relatively poor infrastructure is time-consuming and most travelers cannot commit to visiting more than one spot in one go.

The Cambodia vs Vietnam dilemma is one that Asia aficionados struggle with the most. The two countries’ histories are intertwined, yet they both managed to have kept their distinct culture and voice.

We have assembled a list of reasons to visit one over the other. See for yourself which country’s strong points you find more convincing. Or better even, find enough time to visit both – you will (only) need several weeks.

20 Cambodia: The Best Beaches And Islands In SE Asia

Cambodia has white sand tropical beaches and the best ones can be found in the country’s many islands. The photograph above was taken on Koh Rong, the second largest and one of the most popular ones as there are beaches and activities for all kinds of travelers.

19 Vietnam: Treat Yourself To A Yummy Bowl Of Pho

While traveling in Vietnam, it is virtually impossible to not try pho (pronounced as ‘fuh’) at some point. Pho is a tasty and healthy broth with noodles, chicken or beef and an array of garnishes. You can find it anywhere: people sell it both on the streets and in high-end restaurants.

18 Cambodia: The Concept Of Tourist Traps Hasn't Reached Cambodia (Yet)

Everyone who has been to South East Asia knows that it can be intense: people try to haggle with tourists on every step of the way and scam their gullible souls – especially in taxi cabs. In Cambodia, however, you are less likely to get conned without you knowing it.

17 Vietnam: A Versatile And Geographically Dynamic Destination

Vietnam has it all. Whether you are looking for a city-break or a secluded time offline, you are covered there. Also, its geography spans from mountains, jungles, and caves to beaches and rivers. Consider yourself informed though: Both the urban and the rural areas are well-worth visiting !

16 Cambodia: It Is Hard To Find More Authentic And Friendly Locals Than Cambodians

Travelers who go to Cambodia often come home with an important realization: the people’s warmth and friendliness are a reason enough to visit. We live in a world where we often forget to be considerate to people around us and Cambodian locals might teach us a lesson in compassion and human kindness.

15 Vietnam: Halong Bay Is The Ultimate Bucket List Item

Halong bay’s emerald waters and limestone islands became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Located close to Hanoi, most travelers take time to see this natural gem and take a kayaking tour there. If time allows it, consider going to the nearby Cat Ba island as well.

14 Cambodia: Sihanoukville Welcomes Backpackers Looking To Have Some Fun

Those who are passing through Cambodia cannot avoid Sihanoukville as it is a gateway to get to the previously mentioned tropical islands. Those who seek a fun night out or some rest often stick around the city itself as it is a prominent hub of hostels and bars.

13 Vietnam: Night Buses Are An Amazing Game Changer In Transportation

Vietnam has made sure that long-distance bus rides don’t discourage travelers. Bus tickets can often be bought at hotels and they even pick up travelers there. Once aboard, you have as much legroom as those who fly first class. Often, there are even curtains, so you can enjoy some privacy.

12 Cambodia: The World-Famous Sunrise At Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is one of the top tourist sites in Cambodia. It is especially mesmerizing during the sunrise when you can see the temple’s silhouette against the early morning sky. This huge Hindu temple complex is almost a thousand years old and it is the world’s largest religious building.

11 Vietnam: The View Of Rice Fields In The Mountainous Town Of SaPa Are Worth The Drive

Sapa is located in the far northwestern part of Vietnam, close to the Chinese border. Many travelers choose to do a detour to this town in order to do some hiking and see the Hoang Lien National Park. The visit is not complete without visiting the famous paddy fields.

10 Cambodia: The Country's History Needs To Be Heard

Cambodia is rich in both ancient and modern history. The area was populated 40,000 years ago! We recommend learning about the glorious era of the Angkor kingdom from the 9 th to 15 th century and the tragic destiny of approximately 2 million people during the Khmer Rouge era in the 1970s.

9 Vietnam: If You Can Only Visit One Place, Visit Hoi An

No city in Vietnam is as picturesque as Hoi An, a city filled with colorful lanterns and water canals. The old part of town is full of quaint shops, markets, and restaurants. Tourists often treat themselves to a tailored piece of clothing while in town and do some shopping.

8 Cambodia: Cardamom Mountains Are An Amazing Place To Do Some Jungle Trekking

Jungle trekking in Cambodia is for thrill-seeking adventurers and environmentalists. The rainforest there is essentially untouched and boasts amazing biodiversity. It is home to many endangered species, such as tigers, sun bears, and leopards. Worry not, you are very unlikely to run into one if you choose to visit!

7 Vietnam: The Motorcyclist's Dream Ride

The coolest way to travel Vietnam is on a motorcycle. The idea is to buy yourself a bike in Ho Chi Minh City in the south and ride it all the way up to Hanoi or vice versa. You will not miss a single vista that way!

6 Cambodia: All The Animal Lovers Get Some Quality Time With Elephants

Cambodia has many elephant sanctuaries. By visiting one of them, you support elephant conservation and get to see some friendly giants while you are at it. The animals are not exploited and tourists may not ride them. For those passionate about saving the elephants, some organizations offer volunteering positions.

5 Vietnam: The Huge Mekong Delta Offers An Insight Into A Simpler Way Of Life

The Mekong is one of the longest Asian rivers and in the south of Vietnam, its delta becomes a maze of swamps, smaller rivers, and islands. The biggest city in the delta is Cần Thơ, famous for its floating markets and a starting point for visiting smaller agricultural communities.

4 Cambodia: The Hidden Gem Of Battambang Offers The True Cambodian Experience

Battambang is Cambodia’s second-largest city and many tourists skip it. But they are missing out: it is a place of immense history where everyone can learn something about the local culture. Do not miss out on taking a ride on the quirky bamboo train, depicted in the photograph above.

3 Vietnam: The Imperial City Of Hue Is Hauntingly Stunning

History buffs should not miss Hue, located in central Vietnam. This architectural jewel used to be the capital in times when Vietnam was a kingdom. Sadly, some of the historic sites were damaged during the Vietnam War. There is also a cool abandoned water-park that tourists can visit.

2 Cambodia: Proper Khmer Cuisine Is Hard To Find Outside Of The Country

While some of the world’s cuisine can be found in almost any given developed country, authentic Khmer restaurants are very hard to find. While there, make sure to try some of their traditional dishes, such as fish amok and lap Khmer. The food is not as spicy as Thai.

1 Vietnam: The Coffee Is Out Of This World

Vietnamese coffee is a definite gourmet highlight. It is strong, refreshing and tasty. You can get it with sweetened condensed milk – it is a treat! It comes in many varieties: there’s the egg coffee, coconut coffee, and more adventurous flavors. When there, you can try the famous weasel coffee as well.

Cuisine: Differences in Cambodian and Vietnamese Food

Cambodian cuisine tends to be spicier and more heavily influenced by Thai and Chinese flavors. Cambodian dishes often feature lemongrass, kaffir lime, and a variety of herbs. Some popular Cambodian dishes include:

  • Amok : A popular Cambodian dish made with coconut milk, curry paste, and fish or chicken, typically served in a banana leaf.

Arts and Architecture

Temples, pagodas and relics.

The ancient Khmer Empire is known for its impressive temple complexes , such as Angkor Wat , which are characterized by elaborate carvings and ornate architecture. These out-shine anything Vietnam has to offer. There is also the Silver Pagoda , with the intricate silver floor tiles and other silver decorations.

Northern Vietnam a more modest architectural tradition, similar to China, with a focus on simple, functional structures. The modern temples and pagodas look look cheap and campy , like an amusement park version of temples.

South Vietnam has more elaborate and varied temples than Northern Vietnam — they are slightly reminiscent of Thailand or India. South Vietnam are also has more ancient relics from the old Champa empire, whose ornate ancient temples have a hint of Indian and/or Indonesian influence.

Art Performances and Craftsmanship

which is better to visit cambodia or vietnam

Cambodia has rich and visually stunning artistic performances, including:

  • Apsara Dance : a traditional dance performed by female dancers dressed in elaborate costumes and doing graceful, flowing movements. It is based on the legend of the Apsara, celestial beings who are said to inhabit the clouds.
  • Khmer Classical Dance : a traditional dance form that combines elements of Hindu mythology, Buddhist teachings, and local folklore. It is characterized by elaborate costumes, precise movements, and expressive gestures.
  • Khmer Music : traditional music played on xylophone, gongs, and flute, often in combination with poetry and story-telling.

Vietnam’s traditional song and dance performances are less visually impressive compared to their Cambodian neighbours. Nonetheless, there are interesting attractions like:

  • Water-puppet Threatre : old “black screen” technique to make puppets come alive.
  • A-O Bamboo show : modern Asian-fusion dance, like a Vietnamese Cirque Du Soleil.
  • Hau Dong – transvestites act as past-kings and throw money at onlookers.
  • Each of the 54 ethnic minorities have their own folk performances.

In contrast, we admire Vietnam’s artistic tradition in the commercial arts and crafts — Vietnam especially has a deep history of fine craftsmanship in painting, wood-carving, embroidery, instrument-making, and much more.

Learn more about Vietnam’s incredible manufacturing and handicraft skills by visiting Vietnam’s artisanal villages .

Old Cambodia was more heavily influenced by its neighbors in Southeast Asia, such as Thailand and Laos, while Vietnam has been more influenced by China (at times, it was even occupied by China).

In terms of friendliness and being welcoming towards foreigners, the rural Cambodians are popularly considered some of most warm and genuinely welcoming people . In contrast, the touristy and urban areas of Cambodia, such as Phnom Penh, are not especially friendly (and are even outwardly hostile to Westerners).

North Vietnam culture is not known for being especially friendly to tourists, having a legacy of suspicious towards foreigners during the heydey of Socialism. However, South Vietnam is considered much more friendly and welcoming of foreigners , having a longer legacy of global trade and free-market capitalism — Read more here about the differences between north and south Vietnamese culture.

Did you know : the Vietnamese people have some of world’s most positive attitudes towards Americans .

In Cambodia, it is considered polite to touch another person’s face during greetings, while in Vietnam it is considered very impolite to touch someone’s head or face. In Cambodia, it is also common for people to use their left hand to touch or pass objects to others, while in Vietnam it is considered impolite to use the left hand for these purposes.

The family structure of Cambodia generally consists of extended families: it is common for multiple generations to live together in the same household. Grandparents are the most important for child-rearing. This is also true in Vietnam, but young Millennial urban families are starting more nuclear families, and many aspire to live separately from their parents.

Religious Differences Between Cambodians and Vietnamese

Both Vietnam and Cambodia have had waves of foreign religious rulers, including Buddhists, Islamic rulers in Cambodian and Southern Vietnam, and Confucianism in Vietnam.

More recently, both Vietnam and Cambodia had active suppression of religious institutions and careful control of personal religious beliefs under their respective Socialist/Communist regimes.

In Cambodia, Buddhism has been re-established as the official state religion following the end of the brutal Pol Pot regime. The majority of people in Cambodia are Theravada Buddhism ( Öjendal & Lilja 2009 ).

Vietnamese culture: burning offerings and gifts to honour ancestors

Religion is more complex in Vietnam:

  • Atheists or religiously unaffiliated make-up the overwhelming majority of Vietnamese people — such labels were necessary for government employment and government favours under Socialism.
  • In actuality, most so-called religiously-unaffiliated Vietnamese do in fact observe a variety of spiritual rituals, holidays, supernatural beliefs, and superstitions related to Daoism and Confucianism, such as Ancestor worship and burning paper-effigies .
  • Only 5% to 15% of Vietnamese are Buddhists (Mahayana), 6-7% are Catholic, 1% are Protestant, and less than 1% are Muslim. There are a variety of other Vietnamese religons like Cao-Dai’ism.
  • Vietnamese are incredibly superstitious . Many Vietnamese rely on Fortune-Tellers for major life decisions, including whom to marry, when to have a baby, what house to buy, and when to travel. Belief in ghosts is widespread.

Ethnic Groups of Cambodia vs Vietnam

Cambodia has a more concentrated ethnography: the Khmer ethnic group make up 90% of the population . There are other ethnic minorities including Vietnamese, Lao, Thai, Cham and various others. In general, Cambodia has a more dominating national identity that Vietnam.

Vietnam has a high degree of ethnic diversity, with 54 recognized minority ethnic groups ( read more here ). The highlands and mountain areas of Vietnam (SaPa, Hai Giang, Pleiku, etc) are dominated by a plurality ethnic minorities — these are especially interesting cultural attractions for tourists.

Map of Vietnam's 54 ethnic minorities

The dominant ethnic group are the “Kinh” (i.e. the Viet) who make-up approximately 86% of the population , especially in the North, which was their ethnic homeland. In contrast, South Vietnam has different populations, such as the Cham, but has undergone several hundred years of colonization and forced Vietization.

  • Language : The official language of Cambodia is Khmer , which bares some similarities to Thai. The official language of Vietnam is Vietnamese, which is unique to Vietnam, but shares some ancient vocabulary with Mandarin.
  • Alphabet : the Vietnamese use Latin characters, plus a variety of diacritics and accents to signify “ tones ” and different vowels. The Latin script makes Vietnam a lot easier to navigate for Western tourists . In contrast, Cambodians use a special non-Latin Khmer alphabet, that is descending from an ancient Brahmi script (from India). It is very difficult for foreigners to master.
  • English : Vietnam has a more widespread use of English, which makes it easier for Western tourists to communicate and get around. In Cambodia, English is less widely spoken, and tourists may need to rely more on local guides or translators to communicate.

"how are you?" in Khmer vs Vietnamese

Vietnam also has a variety of services available in Korean, Japanese and Chinese due to the high influx of Asian partners establishing factories and investment operations in Vietnam.

History: Brief Overview of Differences between Cambodian and Vietnamese History

  • Precolonial histories : Cambodia and Vietnam have distinct precolonial pasts. Cambodia was originally part of the Khmer Empire , which was a powerful and influential kingdom in Southeast Asia from the 9th to 15th centuries. Vietnam, on the other hand, was home to a number of disparate dynasties and feudal states that were often in conflict with each other, such as the Dai Viet in the north and Champa to the south. Vietnam also suffered multiple-centuries of occupation by different Chinese dynasties.
  • Colonization : Vietnam was colonized by France , which established a protectorate over the country in the late 19th century until 1954. Vietnam also occupied and controlled Cambodia during various periods. Cambodia had a series of treaties and agreements with France which gave France effective control over the country. The French influence is generally well-regarded in both countries — the French built lasting and beneficial infrastructure and institutions, such as massive bridges, paved roads, archaeology, and some of the most beloved colonial buildings.
  • Vietnam War : Vietnam’s civil war (aka, the “American War”) was a seminal event to shape modern Vietnam — Vietnam suffered heavy casualties and mass-destruction, but it resulted in reunification of the once-cosmopolitan South with the Communist North. Almost immediately thereafter, China made a failed attempt to invade Vietnam in 1979.
  • Khmer Rouge : The Cambodian Khmer Rouge took power in Cambodia in 1975 after a long and bloody civil war. The infamous Pol Pot became the leader of the new government. Pol pot instituted a radical and violent program of social engineering and collectivization. His brutal policies included execution of intellectuals, religious leaders, and anyone else who was perceived as a threat. Approximately 1/4 of the Cambodian population died as a direct result of Pol Pot’s policies . Pol Pot’s rule came to an end in 1979, when Vietnamese forces invaded Cambodia and toppled the Khmer Rouge government.
  • Post-war : Following the economic stagnation of Socialism, in 1986 the Vietnamese government embarked on a series of economic and social liberalizations known as “Doi moi” , which spurred tremendous economic growth and prosperity. In Cambodia, the instability of the country persisted much longer than in Vietnam. The Paris Peace Accords in 1991 resulted in the deployment of UN peacekeepers to oversee the transition to a new democratic government, as well free-market reforms and special economic zones to help attract FDI. These progressive reforms have regressed recently.
  • Rise of China : Cambodia is more pro-China than Vietnam (many Vietnamese worry that Cambodia is back-sliding on its multi-party democratic system and becoming a vassal state of China). In contrast, China has been a long-time nemesis of the Vietnamese people , despite their close cultural connections (in the North). Vietnam maintains a precarious diplomatic relationship with China — officially they are top strategic partners and key trade partners, while under-the-surface they are seething over maritime border disputes. Vietnam is also increasing its relationship with the USA, Japan, Korea and other democratic, Western-allied countries. Vietnam also has long historical ties with Russia.

Somewhat surprisingly, the Cambodian and Vietnamese people feel little solidarity with each other , having a tense recent history including invasions. Most Vietnamese know little about Cambodia, and feel a closer kinship with Western countries that have a large Vietnamese diaspora.

Economy: Explosive Growth in Vietnam and Cambodia

Both Vietnam and Cambodia are among the world’s fastest growing economies , mainly as a rebound after decades of economic stagnation under command-and-control central-planning (see the graph below showing the economic “catch-up” with Asian neighbours post-liberalization). With free-market economic reforms, both countries demonstrate a fierce appetite and aptitude for business-formation and FDI, especially in Vietnam.

GDP/capita growth rates of Vietnam compared to other SE Asian countries, since 1970

Vietnam has a more diverse and developed economy compared to Cambodia , with a strong manufacturing sector and a growing middle class. Cambodia’s economy is primarily based on agriculture, tourism, and garments, and it is still a relatively poor country.

Both countries have benefited from the USA’s trade war with China, as well as broader Western divestment from China. Vietnam is the focus of a lot of FDI and re-routing of companies’ supply-chains away from China — many top-international brands now make a majority (or plurality) of their manufacturing in Vietnam.

Cambodia is also growing in popularity as a low-cost alternative to China, but its logistical infrastructure is less developed than Vietnam.

Be sure to consult your government’s official travel advisories before visiting either Cambodia or Vietnam.

Both Cambodia and Vietnam are considered relatively safe . The USA Department of State rates both countries as Level 1 – Exercise Normal Precautions , while noting some regional issues.

In Vietnam, you are more likely to be a victim of petty scams and dodgy-business practices , as opposed to outright violence. Read more here . However, many Western governments have noted an uptick in petty crimes and violent assaults on tourists since 2019.

Cambodia has a number of special advisories. For example, Phnom Penh is designated as “Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution” by the USA State Department: they warm about street robberies targetting tourists — we can also personally attest to feeling unsafe in Phnom Penh at night-time.

Cambodia has a persistent problem with land mines and unexploded ordnance in remote areas. Be extra careful in places like Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Pailin, and Kampong Thom provinces.

Arriving into Hanoi to Begin Your Vietnam and Cambodia Itinerary

Vietnam, Hanoi, Street Sellers

For the purpose of this Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary, I suggest beginning your adventures in the north of Vietnam, and the capital of Hanoi, as this will help you carve out the smoothest and quickest itinerary route without having to double-back on yourself.

Hanoi is also a popular gateway to the region, with many well-priced flights arriving here from across the world.

As always, I use Skyscanner to find the best flight deals and Bookaway to find the best bus journeys.

Day 1 & 2: Hanoi, Vietnam

Stay: little charm hostel.

Vietnam, Hanoi, Egg Coffee

Welcome to Vietnam!

You’re straight into the Southeast Asian madness here in Hanoi – a bustling city, whose old quarter streets will quickly have you seeing, smelling and tasting many of the delights of this region.

Don’t miss the opportunity to sample the amazing Vietnamese coffees on offer here – especially the acquired taste of an egg coffee – and there’s loads of cafes where you can do just that.

My favourite has to be Hidden Gem , which is tucked down a back street, but well worth seeking out.

Other sights to see in this city include the Ho Hoan Kien Lake and Den Ngoc Son Temple, the nearby puppet theatre, St Joseph’s Cathedral and the famous Hanoi Street Train.

The Hanoi Social Club is a wonderful place to eat, drink and unwind.

Learn more about the top things I recommend doing in this city here .

Just enter your details below and I'll email it you - simple!

Day 3 & 4: Cat Ba Island, Vietnam

Stay: homestead hostel.

Vietnam, Lan Ha Bay, Scenery

From Hanoi make your way via bus and boat to Cat Ba Island care of the Cat Ba Express service. I paid $28 USD for this return service from the capital.

Cat Ba Island is a much better bet for those who want to see Hanoi Bay scenery on a budget – a crucial point to note if you’re a backpacker making this Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary. Here’s a full blog post all about it .

Just south of this famous World Heritage Site, heading out on a cheap day cruise from Cat Ba Island to Lan Ha Bay to experience an identical landscape will cost you a fraction of the price that it will on a direct tour from Hanoi to Halong Bay.

For a day cruise that included kayaking through remote parts of the bay with no other tourists (which you won’t get in Halong Bay itself) I paid just $23 USD with Cat Ba Ventures.

If you have spare time on Cat Ba Island, then enjoying some hiking in the national park, that occupies a large swath of land in the centre of this island, also makes for a fab day trip.

Day 5: Bus to Phong Nha, Vietnam

Vietnam, Phong Nha, Town Views

Head back to Hanoi from Cat Ba Island on day 5 in time to catch a night bus from the capital to the town of Phong Nha.

I highly suggest booking your night bus in advance through a great website called 12Go .

This night bus trip cost me $9 USD.

Day 6 & 7: Phong Nha, Vietnam

Stay: central backpackers if you want to be social or amanda homestay if you want to chill.

Vietnam, Phong Nha Hang Tien

You’ll arrive into Phong Nha early in the morning if you take the night bus from Hanoi, which means you have the whole day to explore this tiny town as well as the lovely Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and caves that lie on its outskirts, including Dark Cave and Paradise Cave.

Phong Nha is all about the caves actually – they are incredible and huge, in fact they’re UNESCO listed – and booking on a trip to explore some that lie further out from the town is a must on your Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary.

I ventured out on a one day tour with Oxalis to the Tu Lan Cave to do just this and found it was one of the best days of my whole time in Vietnam.

This makes it well worth the splurge, but do ensure you book in advance as places sell out quickly.

You can learn more in the ultimate travel guide to Phong Nha I wrote following my time there.

I’d never even consider travelling to Vietnam or Cambodia without proper coverage and always recommend travel insurance from World Nomads which I’ve used throughout my time in these 2 countries and beyond.

I love that World Nomads’ policies cover of a wide range of adventure activities – which is definitely needed for a country like Vietnam – as well as their great customer service and the fact that you can easily claim or extend your coverage while you’re still abroad, online.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for travel insurance with Covid-19 cover, then look no further than Safetywing’s great Nomad Insurance policies.

These guys will cover you at some seriously great prices, including if you have to quarantine!

Day 8: Hue, Vietnam

Stay: bon ami guesthouse.

Vietnam, Hue, Royal Palaces

After your amazing time caving in Phong Nha, it’s time to continue south to the city of Hue, which boasts another UNESCO-listed site, namely its old imperial city.

If you get to Hue by lunchtime, the afternoon should give you plenty of time to explore this fascinating site (which closes at 5pm) and impart a real sense of stepping back in time.

Entrance to the Royal Palaces cost me 150,000 Vietnamese Dong (₫) for a single entry ticket, or, if you have time, combine this with a trip to the tombs, which lie just outside the city of Hue.

A combination ticket for both attractions, which lasts for 1 day, costs 280,000₫.

Hue is a very chilled city, set along a river and boasts some nice parklands to stroll in and good cafes to drink in too.

Day 9, 10, 11 & 12: Hoi An, Vietnam

Stay: love.ly hostel.

Vietnam, MySon, Me at Ruins

And from Hue, it’s then a short journey to the fab city (also UNESCO-listed) of Hoi An.

This destination is a traveller favourite on any Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary and many people end up spending longer here than they planned, as they quickly fall in love with the quaint streets and charming atmosphere.

You can either travel by bus here direct from Hue , or you can enjoy an Easy Rider tour , which takes you on the back of a bike to sightsee some of the places in between these 2 cities including the famous Marble Mountains and Thanh Toan Bridge.

Once in Hoi An, spend at least a day exploring the gorgeous old town, which is particularly beautiful at night with all its glowing lanterns, and then consider some of the great day trips on offer here, including those to the UNESCO My Son ruins , the nearby beach at An Bang, a snorkelling trip to the Cham Islands or a fabulous Vietnamese cooking class.

Learn more about the top things to do in Hoi An in this post I wrote about visiting the city.

Day 13, 14 & 15: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Stay: da blend hostel.

Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, Pink Cathedral

And finally, it’s onto your last destination in Vietnam, namely the amazing city of Ho Chi Minh, which lies in the south of the country.

The main sights in the centre of the city can all be seen in an easy day, but it’s the atmosphere of this place that really captured me.

There’s also some great day trips to enjoy from Ho Chi Minh, including to the Chu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta.

You can learn more in my post about the top 17 things to do in Ho Chi Minh .

GETTING FROM HO CHI MINH CITY TO CAMBODIA ON YOUR VIETNAM AND CAMBODIA ITINERARY

You can easily use the services of Champa Mekong to cross from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to Kampot in Cambodia, tickets for which can be booked online via the secure website 12Go .

Learn more about how I crossed the border from Kampot in Cambodia to Ho Chi Minh here .

Otherwise, if you’re looking to take a slightly different route, I suggest using a bus company called Giant Ibis to get from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh. Again, you can book tickets online care of 12Go .

I’ve used this Giant Ibis many times in Southeast Asia, including when I crossed the border from Bangkok to Siem Reap , and can’t fault their service or how easy they make border journeys.

Day 16, 17 & 18: Kampot, Cambodia

Stay: ganesha eco lodge.

Cambodia, Kampot, Me In Front of Building

And now we’re into the final 2 weeks of this Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary.

You’ll no doubt have had a crazy schedule if you followed my above 2 week schedule for Vietnam, so Kampot makes for the perfect place to chill out.

Here you can enjoy kayaking on the river or waterfall hikes, trips to pepper farms or some great massage and spa options.

There’s also day trips to Bokor Hill Station available, as well as sunset river cruises or even escapes to the seaside town of Kep, which is just a couple of hours away.

Or you can just wander the old town centre of Kampot and soak in its relaxed atmosphere.

A great place to do that from is a café called Simple Things, which has a delicious healthy menu and daily yoga classes.

Day 19, 20, 21, 22 & 23: Koh Rong Sanloem, Cambodia

Stay: hornbill guesthouse.

Cambodia, Koh Rong Sanloem, Boat on Beach

I won’t say too much about this paradise island, because I want you to discover the joys of it for yourself, but arriving here really is the perfect way to unwind and trust me, you’ll want to stay longer.

The smaller of the 2 islands in this part of Cambodia, Koh Rong Sanloem offers some wonderful beachside chill time on a jungle-clad island gently lapped by tropical blue waters.

Take a look at my ultimate guide to Koh Rong Sanloem , which contains tons more info if you decide to head here… which you definitely should!

5 PACKING ESSENTIALS FOR CAMBODIA & VIETNAM

#1 Lonely Planet Guidebook – The Southeast Asia Lonely Planet is excellent and very helpful for any trip to these countries with lots of top tips and recommended places to eat.

#2 Walking Shoes – There’s likely to be a lot of walking in Vietnam and Cambodia especially around those temples and cities! As such, I advise packing a pair of good runners, like these New Balance trainers , which were perfect for my time here.

#3 European & British Power Adapters – Vietnam and Cambodia have a mix of power outlets, but generally opt for a mix of the European and British ones, so make sure you come prepared with a Skross world adapter .

#4 Camera and Lens – I love my Sony A6000 mirrorless , which was ideal for capturing the colour, chaos and cuisine and charm of these countries.

#5 Travel Scarf – A great multi-purpose travel item that can be used to safely store valuables as well as cover your shoulders while you explore many of Vietnam and Cambodia’s top sights, a Sholdit travel scarf is a must for me!

Day 24 & 25: Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Stay: feliz hostel.

Cambodia, Phnom Penh, Prison Window

If you can tear yourself away from the island bliss of Koh Rong Sanloem, then the next stop on your Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary should be the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh.

You can take a Giant Ibis bus to make the long journey from the mainland town of Sikhounville (which is where the boat from Koh Rong Sanloem docks).

The journey to Phnom Penh will then likely take all day and have you arriving into the capital in the early evening.

Wander along the lovely riverside promenade to get a feel for the city, before checking out its main attractions the following day.

These are namely the infamous Killing Fields and S-21 Prison.

Very harrowing sites that pay witness to the awful genocide that befell this country, they are highly informative and should not be missed if you really want to learn a bit more about Cambodia.

Onederz Hostel can arrange joint tuk-tuks that will pair you with other travellers so you can see both sites together, in a day, for just $7 USD.

Day 26: Battambang, Cambodia

Stay: pomme.

Cambodia, Battambang, Bats

After Phnom Penh, it’s then back on a bus to head for Battambang, a small city that boasts some beautiful colonial architecture, heritage walks and an old bamboo train you can still ride.

My favourite thing to do here however was visit the bat cave entrance which, at sunset, will allow you to see more bats than you can ever possibly imagine, exiting a huge cave mouth in one crazy spectacle.

I paid $10 USD for a return tuk-tuk (including waiting time) from Battambang to the cave in time for sunset.

BOOKING BUSES TO / AROUND VIETNAM AND CAMBODIA

You can book bus tickets both across borders, as well as within these 2 countries online via the secure website 12Go , who I used throughout my time here and highly recommend.

Day 27, 28, 29, 30: Siem Reap, Cambodia

Stay: onederz hostel.

Cambodia, Angkor, Temple Gates

And last but not least on this Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary, it’s time to head to Siem Reap… home to the world famous and UNESCO-listed Angkor Wat complex.

Siem Reap the city has quite a lot going on in its own right and it’s well worth spending a day exploring here.

Top of the list are the night markets, river strolls and massages, but you can discover more in this list I wrote about the best things to do this city .

You can also use this day to plan your Angkor Wat experience and top of the list has to be seeing an Angkor Wat sunrise .

Tickets to this famous temple complex, which is HUGE FYI, can be bought at the entrance for varying amounts of time, but I highly suggest the 3 day ticket, which will allow you to return to the complex on a few occasions to see as much of it as possible.

As it gets incredibly hot and humid here, sightseeing this massive site in a day is exhausting, so why not take it at a more relaxed pace and spend a few days there so you can see the main temples, as well as some of the smaller ones, a sunrise as well as a sunset, and have the opportunity to cycle as well as walk amidst the jungle, ruins and villages here.

Again, Onederz Hostel boasts some great shared tuk-tuk tours, which are priced at $7 USD each and combine you with other tourists to help keep costs down.

This hostel also boasts 2 pools, which is ideal for the crazy heat you’ll experience here.

Then it’s time to head home… onwards!

Grab a domestic flight from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh and here connect with your international flight. Again, I’d use Skyscanner to find the cheapest tickets available.

Alternatively, hop on a bus from Siem Reap to Bangkok to explore your next Southeast Asian country, Thailand !

Got More Time for Your Vietnam and Cambodia Itinerary?

Vietnam, DaNang, Beach

If you have more time for your Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary, then I’d highly recommend the following places, which are also great destinations I simply didn’t have the opportunity to fit into my month long plan…

  • Da’Nang – Beachside city near Hoi An in Vietnam. Great for a few days chilling.
  • Sapa – Amazing place for trekking and homestays in the north of Vietnam. Travel here from Hanoi. Check out this excellent multi-day trip if you want to book ahead of time.
  • Ninh Binh – Described as Halong Bay onland, this remarkable landscape can be fitted into your Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary between Cat Ba Island and Phong Nha.
  • Dalat – Hilltop town famed for its adventure activities in the south of Vietnam.
  • Mekong Delta – You can take a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta, but if you really want to get into the culture of this unique area in south Vietnam why not consider a 2 day excursion?
  • Pho Quoc – Arguably Vietnam’s best beachside spot, fit a few days relaxing on this island into your itinerary between heading from Ho Chi Minh City towards Kampot in Cambodia.

  • 7 Reasons You Should Visit...

7 Reasons You Should Visit Cambodia over Vietnam

which is better to visit cambodia or vietnam

Vietnam may well be the home of timeless charm but Cambodia is the Kingdom of Wonder, and is tempting an increasing number of tourists to cross over the border and explore its less trodden trails . While Vietnam boasts a beauty of its own, here are some reasons why Cambodia rules.

Friendly faces.

Smiles can be found in abundance across Southeast Asia, and there are plenty to be seen in Vietnam. However, nothing beats Cambodian hospitality and you’ll be overwhelmed by the gentle nature and warm welcome people seemingly dish out by the bucket load. From tuk tuk drivers and waiters, to street vendors and school kids, prepare for faces to light up with a grin and a stream of hellos to bellow through the air wherever you are in Cambodia.

Smiles are plentiful in Cambodia

Diversity of Dishes

Fish amok, a Khmer speciality

Compact Size

It could be argued that Vietnam’s size and sprawl gives it more diversity than Cambodia, and more space to explore. However, Cambodia’s compact size means that getting off the beaten track is easier, and improved infrastructure, which is getting better all the time, makes remote locations more accessible and cheaper to get to. If you want to squeeze capital life, temples, islands and jungle into a short trip on a budget, don’t sweat because it’s easy in Cambodia.

Idyllic island life on Koh Rong is easily accessible in Cambodia

Of course, there’s so much more to Cambodia than its temples but, hello – it’s home to Angkor Wat. Until you’ve watched the sun peek from behind its iconic silhouette, the light revealing its incredible beauty, it’s hard to understand the majestic magnitude of this archaeological feat, which dates back to the early 12th century and was once the centre of the Khmer Empire.

Sunrise over Angkor Wat

Cambodian Charm

It’s fair to say that Cambodia is a little less developed than its neighbour, but this only adds to the unique experience that the Kingdom of Wonder can offer. Like the gift that keeps on giving, the country, especially rural areas, is full of jaw-dropping sights. A family of six balancing on one motorbike, no problem. Dozens of chickens tied together by their legs being transported on the back of a bike with a few freshly-slaughtered pigs slumped across the driver’s lap, normal. Men napping while precariously balancing on their ‘motos’, standard.

Jaw-dropping sights can be found everywhere in Cambodia

Entry with Ease

Vietnam has extended its visa exemption scheme for five European countries until July, but for everyone else, it’s about US$60 for a tourist visa, with limited visas on arrival available. Visitors to Cambodia , on the other hand, can turn up at the airport, or another border, and for US$30 get a one-month visa within a few minutes. Those wanting to stay can easily extend without having to leave the country, and Immigration are pretty lax towards those who accidentally overstay, charging US$10 – this recently increased from US$5 – a day.

Off the Beaten Track

Tourism has undoubtedly taken off in Cambodia but it still remains relatively off the beaten track, compared to Vietnam. This makes steering clear of crowds – unless you’re at Angkor – much simpler, with many remote spots within easy reach. And let’s not forget the fact that Cambodia still holds a little more edge when name-dropping countries visited among fellow travellers and friends.

Cambodia and Vietnam have distinct cultural differences, stemming from their unique histories and influences. Cambodia was heavily influenced by Indian culture and Buddhism, while Vietnam was influenced by China and Confucianism. Cambodia is known for its intricate temples and religious sites, such as the Angkor Wat, while Vietnam boasts a mix of Chinese and French architecture in its cities. The people in both countries are friendly and welcoming, but there are noticeable differences in their traditions, customs, and ways of life.

Natural Landscapes:

Cambodia and Vietnam both have a diverse range of natural landscapes, including lush jungles, pristine beaches, and rugged mountains. Cambodia is known for its lush countryside, and the Mekong River, which offers a great opportunity for river cruises. Vietnam, on the other hand, boasts some of the world’s most stunning beaches, such as Nha Trang and Phu Quoc. The mountainous region in the northern part of Vietnam is also a popular destination for those seeking an adventurous vacation.

Food and Cuisine:

vietnamese seafood

When it comes to food and cuisine, Cambodia and Vietnam offer their unique flavors and dishes. Cambodian cuisine features a blend of sweet, sour, and salty flavors, with ingredients such as lemongrass, coconut milk, and fish sauce. Vietnam, on the other hand, is known for its noodle soups, such as Pho, and their fresh spring rolls. Both countries have a wide variety of street food, which is both delicious and affordable.

Accommodations and Transportation:

Both Cambodia and Vietnam have a range of accommodation options, from budget hostels to luxurious hotels. Transportation in both countries is also readily available, with buses, trains, and domestic flights being the most common modes of travel. Cambodia is known for its tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis, while Vietnam offers motorcycle rentals for those seeking a more adventurous way to explore the country.

Cost of Living:

cost of living

photo: Annie Spratt

The cost of living in Cambodia and Vietnam is relatively cheap compared to many Western countries. Both countries offer budget-friendly options for accommodation, food, and transportation. However, Cambodia is slightly cheaper than Vietnam, with prices being significantly lower for food and drink.

Tourist Attractions:

Both Cambodia and Vietnam have a wealth of tourist attractions to offer. Cambodia is known for its ancient temples, such as the Angkor Wat, as well as its stunning natural scenery, such as the Tonle Sap Lake. Vietnam is home to Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Cu Chi Tunnels, which provide a glimpse into the country’s rich history.

Nightlife and Entertainment:

vietnam nightlife

Both Cambodia and Vietnam have a vibrant nightlife and entertainment scene, with numerous bars, nightclubs, and cultural events. In Cambodia, the main nightlife scene is centered around the popular tourist destination of Siem Reap, where you’ll find a variety of bars and nightclubs catering to both locals and tourists. In Vietnam, the cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are the main centers of nightlife, with a wide range of bars, clubs, and restaurants. Both countries also offer a range of cultural events, such as traditional dance performances and music festivals.

Safety and Security:

When it comes to safety and security, both Cambodia and Vietnam are relatively safe for tourists. However, travelers should exercise caution and take basic safety precautions, such as avoiding walking alone at night and keeping valuables secure. In Cambodia, there have been reports of petty theft and scams targeting tourists, so it’s important to be vigilant and aware of your surroundings. In Vietnam, traffic accidents are a common concern, so it’s important to be cautious when crossing the street and to avoid driving a motorbike unless you’re experienced.

Both Cambodia and Vietnam offer a wealth of experiences for travelers seeking to explore Southeast Asia. While there are similarities between the two countries, such as their rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, there are also distinct differences in their food, accommodation, and entertainment options. Ultimately, the decision of which country to visit will depend on your personal preferences and interests. @foodie_girl

You would’ve chosen Cambodia over Vietnam if you knew it was cheaper? I don’t think so. Vietnam is so much more beautiful and has so much more to offer than Cambodia.

yogi88

Wow, who would have thought that Cambodia would be the cheaper option? I guess I’ll be packing my bags and heading to Cambodia for my next vacation!

I think Cambodia is a great place to visit! It’s cheaper than Vietnam, and the people are really friendly. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a cheap and fun vacation destination!

WeekendWarriors

I definitely want to go to both places, but if I had to choose one based on this information, I would go to Cambodia!

RinieTran

It’s clear that both Cambodia and Vietnam have a lot to offer in terms of culture, cuisine, landscapes, and more

@RinieTran Having traveled to both Cambodia and Vietnam, I found that while Vietnam may be slightly more expensive, it offers a wider range of budget-friendly options for travelers.

Umph

I’ve been to both Vietnam and Cambodia and I have to say that I preferred Cambodia

JazzyFox83

Wonderful! What made you prefer Cambodia? The magnificent temples of Angkor? The relaxed vibe? I’m curious!

LeShin

I can’t decide if I want to backpack through Vietnam or Cambodia! This article helped clear some things up for me

Jimmie040

Cambodia and Vietnam both offer a unique cultural experience and breathtaking natural landscapes. After reading this article, it’s clear that both countries have something special to offer and I’m looking forward to exploring them both!

Gladysdff

I’ve been to both Cambodia and Vietnam and I can attest to the fact that they’re both amazing countries with so much to explore. With this article, you’ll be able to decide which one is the better choice for your next vacation.

Cambodia might have some hidden gems, but Vietnam seems like a better bang for your buck.

Dear_Bae

Does anyone know the differences between the currencies compared to USD? I think that would tell us overall which is cheaper on paper.

This is such a helpful resource for anyone planning a trip to Southeast Asia. I appreciate how they included specific examples of prices for things like food and transportation

Soulie

Seems like overall it is about the same cost. It just depends on what time of the year you go and what you plan on doing. I still think overall, you can stretch your dollar much further in Vietnam. I have been to both places.

This article is really helpful for budget-conscious travelers who want to visit either Cambodia or Vietnam.

It’s interesting to see how the prices in Cambodia and Vietnam compare. I didn’t realize that Vietnam was so affordable.

I’ve been to Vietnam before and I have to say, it’s definitely worth the cost. But it’s nice to have the option of a cheaper trip to Cambodia. I heard foreigners living in Vietnam will travel to Cambodia to renew their Vietnam visa.

PhoTastic

I think both are great options for traveling on a budget but I would always say Vietnam gives you the most for your dollar. You are able to do so much for so little and have a great time.

tricky

I love how both Cambodia and Vietnam offer such unique experiences for travelers, regardless of which one is slightly cheaper. They are both affordable.

DeLaCruz

I appreciate that the article goes beyond just comparing prices and also talks about the cultural and historical differences between Cambodia and Vietnam. It’s helpful to have that context when deciding where to travel.

The Best (and Worst) Times to Visit Vietnam, According to Experts

Here's when to visit Vietnam for sunny weather, lower prices, and excellent sightseeing.

which is better to visit cambodia or vietnam

Best Times to Visit for Smaller Crowds

Best times to visit for good weather, best times to visit for lower prices, best times to visit for hiking in sa pa, best times to visit for cruising ha long bay, worst times to visit.

Cinnamon and star anise perfume my memories of Vietnam, a country that lodged itself into my palate in fragrant, frenzied bursts. That alluring scent of pho was one of few constants as I traveled through vastly different landscapes, trekking through verdant rice terraces, dodging motorbikes en route to speakeasies, and standing face to face with an endangered monkey in my oceanfront outdoor shower — all within the span of two weeks.

Vietnam is more than 1,000 miles long, a spectacularly slim country that’s only 30 miles wide at its narrowest point. Every region boasts its own allure as well as its own climate, which means you’ll need to carefully consider the time of your visit based on your desired itinerary.

“As the climate varies so much from north to south, there will always be somewhere worth going in Vietnam, whatever time of year you travel,” says Melissa Matthews, regional director for Southeast Asia and North America at luxury travel company Red Savannah .

Here's a regional breakdown of the primary tourist seasons in Vietnam:

  • High Seasons: North: September to November, March and April; Central: April to August; South: October to April
  • Shoulder Seasons: North: December to February, May to August; Central: September to March; South: September to December
  • Low Season: North: May to October; Central: September to May; South: May to September

Before you start planning your trip, read on to learn about the best times to visit Vietnam for hiking the majestic, mountainous rice terraces of Sa Pa, cruising the limestone marvels of Ha Long Bay, and avoiding the rainy monsoon season.

Bang The Tran/Getty Images

The high season in Vietnam varies according to the region, so you’ll always be able to find a place that feels more secluded from the bustle of crowded beaches or cruise ships. Wet season attracts fewer crowds, says Matthews, which falls from May to October in the north, September to May in the central part of the country, and May to September in the south.

Visiting during this time has plenty of perks, as you’ll likely be able to save on accommodations and travel costs. Popular restaurants and tours will be less overrun with tourists, offering a rare opportunity to better immerse yourself in the local culture as you tuck into bun cha on a sidewalk stool. However, bursts of rain and cloudy weather can dampen any plans to hike in Sa Pa or cruise along Ha Long Bay — two quintessential experiences you won’t want to miss.

There are also an abundance of places that remain less crowded throughout the year, says Benjamin Kreuz, general manager of Six Senses Ninh Van Bay — the resort itself is one of them, nestled in a private cove of Nha Trang that became my personal definition of paradise. Many visitors tend to prioritize other attractions as they make their way south, so natural wonders in the north like Ban Gioc Waterfall and the network of caves in Quang Binh remain less busy.

Meet the Expert

  • Melissa Matthews is the regional director for Southeast Asia and North America at luxury travel company Red Savannah.
  • Benjamin Kreuz is the general manager of Six Senses Ninh Van Bay in Vietnam.

No matter when you visit, you’ll always find good weather somewhere in Vietnam. “Vietnam is a beautiful country with tropical weather, making it suitable for visits throughout the year,” says Kreuz.

For those hoping to see Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and everything in between, it’s best to go in the dry season. “February and March are the best months to see the entire country from north to south in relatively dry weather,” says Matthews. She notes that Tet, or Vietnamese Lunar New Year, falls during this time and can last for up to 10 days. “During this time, most of the key sights in the cities are closed, as everyone goes back to their family villages to celebrate,” she says. She recommends heading to the beach during the festival and bookending your trip with time in the major cities.

For a dry and temperate trip to Sa Pa or Hanoi in the north, head there from September to November, or in March and April, she suggests. A sunny beach visit to Hoi An or Nha Trang in the central region is best from April to August, while the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc Island in the south are warmest from October to April.

Vietnam is a relatively affordable destination all year long, with abundant and economical street food and comfortable hotels for all budgets. For your best chance at scoring low-cost flights and accommodations, consider traveling outside the peak tourist season. April, May, October, and November are excellent times, as you’ll still find warm weather throughout the country, but will have fewer tourists to contend with.

A visit to the verdant, terraced rice fields of Sa Pa are a must for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Overlooking the Muong Hoa Valley, the hills are surrounded by spectacular mountains and home to dozens of communities, including the Hmong and Red Dao peoples — many of whom open their homes for overnight stays and lead private or group trekking tours. You can reach this famed hiking destination by car from Hanoi in five hours, by a bus in six to eight hours, or on an overnight sleeper train.

Matthews notes that this region tends to get colder from December to February, so it’s best to plan a trip from September to November or in March and April. Harvest season is also an unforgettable time to visit: In late August through September, the vibrant green hillsides turn a voluptuous shade of gold as the rice ripens.

Ha Long Bay, with its emerald waters and limestone towers, is one of the primary tourist destinations in Vietnam, and as such, has become increasingly overrun with cruise operators leading day tours. For a less crowded experience, consider booking an overnight cruise that will take you deeper into the bay — or to the equally beautiful, slightly less populated neighboring Lan Ha Bay. (I splurged for a two-night cruise with Orchid Cruises , one of the more luxurious tour operators).

March, April, October, and November are ideal months to visit, as they tend to bring warm and sunny weather without as much humidity. You’ll also avoid the peak season, so while it’s still bound to be busy, you can enjoy kayaking through the tranquil waters and hiking Cat Ba island in relative peace. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is also a great opportunity for a snorkeling or scuba diving adventure.

While Vietnam’s varied climate means there’s never really a bad time to visit, you may want to avoid traveling to the country during monsoon season.

“When the monsoon hits, it is hard and heavy and very humid,” says Matthews, who suggests sightseeing in cities during the wet season, where you can still visit museums and historic temples between rainstorms. “Avoid the mountainous region of Sa Pa and definitely don’t book a cruise in Ha Long Bay, as storms will occur and boats are grounded,” she warns.

If you do decide to travel during the rainy season, it’s best to remain flexible in your planning, says Kreuz. “Consider not booking everything in advance due to unpredictable weather,” he says, adding that staying open-minded may help you to take advantage of potential low-season discounts.

Tet, which marks the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, is another tricky time to visit, as many landmarks and businesses close for a week or more to celebrate. It typically lands in late January or early February — this year, it falls on Feb. 10.

Vietnam or Cambodia

which is better to visit cambodia or vietnam

Vietnam or Cambodia ? It’s a seemingly impossible choice with both countries offering a multitude of affordable delights to visitors.

From colourful culture and stunning natural beauty, to nightlife and thriving cities, picking where to spend your holiday can be a difficult decision!

So, to help you out, we’ve pitted the two destinations against each other to find out the best choice for you!

While neither countries are primarily known for their beach hotspots, did you know that both Cambodia and Vietnam have some incredible stretches of paradise-like white sands on their shores?

While the coastal town of Sihanoukville, is usually the first port of call for those wanting to visit Cambodia’s beaches, a ferry out to the islands is highly recommended. For those who like their travels with a splash of the hedonistic party lifestyle, Koh Rong is the place to be.

If you’d prefer to spend a night relaxing, find an undisturbed patch of beach at night and watch as the bioluminescent plankton light up the shores or head to Koh Rong Sanloem, a peaceful island with less development than its larger neighbour.

Nha Trang is Vietnam’s most famous beach resort and it shows. With high rise buildings lining up against the crescent of white sands, the party cranks up as the sun goes down and it’s become a popular destination on the backpacker circuit.

If you’re after somewhere a little more off-the-beaten track, Phú Qu?c island has been attracting more and more attention over the last few years. Think turquoise waters and unbelievable sunsets – plus, you can visit visa-free for up to 30 days if you aren’t planning to visit mainland Vietnam.

Winner: Cambodia

Buzzing, vibrant and full of character; Vietnam’s cities all have their own unique personality and if one doesn’t capture your heart, another will.

For those who like fast-paced glitz and glamour, Ho Chi Minh City combines history with modern skyscrapers, while those who prefer a more relaxed ambiance will love Hoi An , with its bicycle-only streets, charming yellow buildings and lantern strung alleyways.

Hanoi delivers over and over on its unbelievable food hotspots and from here, it’s only a few hours’ drive to two of Vietnam’s most treasured natural wonders – Sapa’s terraced rice fields and the spectacular Halong Bay.

Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam

Phnom Penh and Siem Reap are easily the two most-visited cities on the Cambodian tourist trail.

While they are undeniably both very different, both have an enticing café culture and bustling markets that assault the senses from all angles. While Cambodia is arguably less developed than its neighbour, the capital of Phnom Penh boasts beautiful tree-lined boulevards and charming monuments to visit including the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda.

By contrast, much of central Siem Reap caters for the backpacker market with ‘Pub Street’ and large night markets. However, as the gateway to Angkor Wat, Siem Reap offers something more meaningful beyond the city limits.

Winner: Vietnam

which is better to visit cambodia or vietnam

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Cambodia has a rich heritage but the effects of war are still keenly felt in Phnom Penh and you can’t visit without spending a haunting, yet educational, day visiting the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum.

Learning about how the country has suffered under Pol Pot’s regime less than 50 years ago will make you look at Cambodia with new eyes. Over in Siem Reap, you’ll find the country’s most famous attraction and it’s no surprise to see why.

Dating back to the late 9th century AD, Angkor Wat is the world’s largest religious structure and it’s well worth setting your alarm to watch the sun rise over the three distinctive spires. Other temples in the complex you don’t want to miss are Bayon and Ta Prohm – otherwise known as the ‘Tomb Raider temple’.

Vietnam also has a fascinating history, largely revolving around the French occupation and the Vietnam War era, and incredible museums can be found in most of the major cities.

One of the most visited attractions is the C? Chi Tunnels in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), although there are other tunnel networks in the country that are far less overcrowded with tourists, and a visit to Hue inevitably involves a whole host of interesting activities including a demilitarised Zone (DMZ) tour and sightseeing in the Imperial City.

If you’re more into natural wonders, Halong Bay, Nimh Binh and the Phong Nha Caves are not to be missed for their unbelievably scenery.

Winner: Too close to call!

Food and drinks

Many South East Asian countries are renowned for their outstanding cuisine and perhaps none more so than Vietnam.

Veggies out there, prepare to be very happy as the Vietnamese have a unique style of creating delicious crispy tofu and utterly believable faux meats. Plus, you’ll never be too far from a stall selling Banh Mi, a baguette filled with salad, meat, tofu or cheese that makes the perfect lunchtime snack.

All in all, Vietnam and Cambodia are two incredible countries worthy of visiting during your lifetime. If you fancy relaxing on the beach before visiting some of the world’s most important cultural and religious sites, we’d recommend a trip to Cambodia. But, if foodie delights and cosmopolitan cities are more your thing, Vietnam is the place for you.

Comparing Vietnam Vs Cambodia: Which To Visit

Southeast Asia is filled with wonderful countries offering cultural and historical riches and natural beauty. For tourists planning a trip to this part of the world, two fascinating destinations are Vietnam and Cambodia. Both provide amazing food, interesting history, cultural attractions and opportunities for adventure. However, travelers with limited time may need to choose one over the other. So which is better: Vietnam or Cambodia?

This article will highlight key details on both to help travellers decide which is better for their next vacation.

An Overview of Vietnam

Vietnam has several bustling cities that mix modern energy with historic architecture and monuments. Hanoi is the busy capital in the north, while scenic Ho Chi Minh City in the south offers vibrance. And the UNESCO World Heritage spot of Halong Bay, is one of Asia’s top natural attractions with its emerald waters and soaring islands.

Vietnamese cuisine, like pho noodle soup, brings a tasty blend of flavours. And the country’s recent history, including the Vietnam War, provides many educational opportunities to understand a complicated period. The weather is generally hot, humid and wet, with January to April being the most pleasant time to visit.

Introducing Cambodia

Home to the 12th-century Angkor Wat complex, Cambodia features ancient temple ruins emerging from jungle settings to form its top attraction. The bustling capital of Phnom Penh offers a busy market culture. And the southern islands with pristine beaches provide tropical getaways. Cambodian cuisine is unique, too, blending spicy and salty flavours.

Cambodia’s more recent Khmer Rouge history also gives travellers cultural touchpoints. While hot year-round, November to February is cooler and drier. With both inland and coastal options, Cambodia provides climate variety. Cambodia tour packages offer a great way to see the highlights of this fascinating country.

Key Comparison Factors

For basic tourism, Cambodia is cheaper in terms of costs, like hotels, while Vietnam can better handle budget backpackers. Both countries are relatively safe, with petty theft more likely than violent crime in tourist areas. Vietnam offers better transportation infrastructure and a wider array of modern conveniences.

As for activities, Vietnam has more vibrant big cities for nightlife, great hiking, and cultural variety. Siem Reap is Cambridge’s urban highlight, but Vietnam provides more options. Cambodia counters with the unmatched Angkor Wat complex and relaxation at the southern beaches.

Where Should You Go?

For most first-time visitors, Vietnam claims a slight edge. Travellers seeking culture may enjoy immersing themselves in bustling Hanoi before heading south to explore modern Ho Chi Minh City and learn some history.

Nature lovers can cruise Halong Bay’s peaceful waters and hike Sapa’s mountain trails in the north. And Phu Quoc Island offers Cambodia-like beaches combined with Vietnam convenience.

Ultimately, both Vietnam and Cambodia provide amazing Southeast Asian experiences filled with warm and welcoming locals. So consider combining both on an unforgettable cultural journey. But for travellers forced to pick one, Vietnam claims a small advantage in insights, activities, and convenience. Either way, visiting this part of the world should be on every globe trotter’s wish list!

The best times to visit Cambodia for temple trips, beach days and more

Some Cambodians wryly observe that Cambodia has three seasons – hot, hotter and hottest – but in reality, there are distinct dry and wet seasons that define the harvest cycle and dramatically alter the character of the landscape in this fascinating Southeast Asian nation.

The dry season runs from November to May, and the "cool season" months of November to February are the most popular time to visit Cambodia due to milder temperatures. The countryside appears somewhat parched from February to May when daytime temperatures can soar above 40°C (104°F ).

The wet season usually runs from June to October, coinciding with the southwest monsoon, but it's not necessarily a bad time to travel to Cambodia. It usually only rains heavily once a day towards sunset, the countryside is a blaze of green, and many hotels and resorts offer substantial discounts.

Here's a guide to the best times to visit Cambodia.

The high season (November–March) is the best time for good weather and exploring temples

Temperatures in Cambodia are much more Mediterranean during the "winter" months in Southeast Asia. The mercury occasionally drops below 20°C (68°F), forcing Cambodians to scramble for their coats and woollies. This makes exploring the temples much more pleasant, but it's also the most crowded time at Angkor . Lots of accommodation is booked out in advance, particularly over the Christmas and New Year period and during Chinese New Year, which follows the lunar calendar, falling in January or February.

The shoulder season (July–August) is the best time for families

Although this is the middle of Cambodia's wet season, it doesn’t usually rain that much, though there's enough water to swell the Tonle Sap lake. It's an ideal time for families living in Europe and North America, thanks to the long school holidays and discounted prices at hotels and resorts.

There are also far fewer tourists exploring Angkor during the "green season" when the moats are full of water and many of the temples are coated in moss and lichen. The main drawback of shoulder season travel is that it can rain quite heavily on the coast, meaning Ko Rong and other idyllic islands near Sihanoukville can be quite wet and windy.

The low season (April–June & September–October) is the best time for discounts

When it comes to weather, these months are definitely not the best. Temperatures in April and May reach scorchio levels, and September and October are wet, wet, wet. However, this is the time when accommodation providers release their best special offers. You can save a huge amount of money if you plan on staying at five-star hotels and luxury resorts. September and October are the height of the rainy season, but this also brings emerald landscapes and epic cloud formations.

A month-by-month planner

Many of Cambodia's big festivals follow the lunar calendar and spill across more than one month on the Gregorian calendar. Here's a guide to what is happening throughout the year.

January–March is the busiest time of year

This is peak tourist season in Cambodia, and Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and the South Coast are usually heaving. The internationally recognized New Year celebrations are followed by Chinese and Vietnamese New Years' festivities, so be ready for some serious festive cheer.

Chaul Chnam Chen & Tet: The Chinese New Year – known locally as Chaul Chnam Chen – coincides with Tet, the Vietnamese New Year, falling in either January or February depending on the year. As many of Phnom Penh ’s businesses are run by Chinese-Khmers, commerce grinds to a halt around this time and there are dragon dances all over the capital.

People celebrate Chinese New Year in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

April–June brings festivals and the start of the rains

This is the beginning of the low season for visitors, as the monsoon swoops in, bringing regular rain until October. Young rice is planted and the landscape begins to come to life once more in a blaze of green after the parched months of the dry season. April is the most important month in the calendar for Khmers, marking the Cambodian New Year. However, temperatures rocket and the mercury regularly hits 40°C (104°F).

Chaul Chnam Khmer: During the three-day celebration of Chaul Chnam Khmer (Khmer New Year) in mid-April, Cambodians make offerings at wats, clean out their homes and exchange gifts. It is a memorable time to visit the Kingdom as Khmers go wild with water in the countryside, and a good-natured water fight spills across the country (throwing talcum powder is also popular).

Chat Preah Nengkal (Royal Ploughing Ceremony): Presided over by the royal family, the Royal Ploughing Ceremony is an ancient agricultural festival held to mark the traditional beginning of the rice-growing season. The royal oxen predict whether or not it will be a good harvest by tucking into the sacred crop. The ritual takes place in early May and rotates around different provincial capitals.

Visakha Puja (Buddha Day): A celebration of Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and parinibbana (passing), Visakha Puja sees locals flock to wats (pagodas) to pay their respects. The festival falls on the eighth day of the fourth moon (in May or June) and sees processions of monks carrying candles through Angkor Wat at night.

July–September sees more celebrations and crowds of backpackers

Tourism numbers see a bounce in July and August thanks to the annual school holidays in Europe and the US. Backpackers also descend on Cambodia and the Mekong region to take advantage of university and college holidays. September is traditionally the wettest month in Cambodia, with sporadic flooding along the Mekong and around Battambang . The Khmer calendar’s second-most-important festival, P’chum Ben, falls in September or October.

P’chum Ben (Festival of the Dead): This festival resembles the Christian celebration of All Souls’ Day when respects are paid to the dead through offerings made at wats. P’chum Ben lasts for several days and devout Buddhists are expected to visit seven wats during the festival. Local temples are a blaze of color, ceremonies and chanting.

October-December sees rain give way to warm, dry winds

The rains extend deep into October and this has led to some serious flooding in recent years. However, the countryside is extraordinarily green, and it's a rewarding time for boat travel between Siem Reap and Battambang. November sees the start of the dry, windy season, the best time to be in the country. The peak tourist season starts and continues through until February.

Bon Om Tuk, the much-celebrated Water Festival, takes place in October or November. Christmas and New Year are peak times for visitors at Angkor and leading beach resorts, so book a long way ahead. The international New Year on 31 December is widely (and wildly) celebrated in key cities such as Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Bon Om Tuk (Water Festival): Celebrating the victory of King Jayavarman VII over the Chams, this important festival in October or November also marks the extraordinary natural phenomenon of the reversal of the flow of the Tonlé Sap River. It’s a wonderful, chaotic time to be in Cambodia, with boat races at Sisowath Quay in Phnom Penh, and riverside parties in Siem Reap.

Angkor Photo Festival: In Siem Reap, resident and regional photographers descend on the temples and team up with local youths to teach them the tricks of the trade at this civic-minded festival in November or December. Photography exhibitions are staged all over town and some famous Vietnam War-era photographers are sometimes in attendance.

Angkor Wat International Half Marathon: This half marathon in December has been a fixture on the sporting calendar for two decades. Choose from a 21km (13-mile) half marathon, a 10km (6.2-mile) fun run or various bicycle races. It’s hard to imagine a better backdrop for a run than the incredible temples of Angkor.

Ask an Expert: Vietnam, Cambodia, or Laos?

The Slow Road | Asia-Pacific | By Nathan Lane

Butterfield & Robinson has spent the last twenty years exploring some of our favourite countries in Southeast Asia: Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, making friends along the way.

From teeming cities to serene sunsets over ancient temples, seaside resorts to endless fields of rice paddies, you could spend a lifetime immersing yourself in the culture, traditions and getting to know the locals…and indeed, the possibilities for travel are endless.

Deciding Where to Go

When B&R travellers and friends ask me where they should go on their first trip to the region, I often mention that Southeast Asia is a Pandora’s box of never-ending possibilities. Once you learn more about all the amazing things you can do here, you’ll want to take a 45-day trip—something that is, let’s be honest, neither relaxing nor feasible—so start small. Most of our Southeast Asia trips centre around the wonderful country of Vietnam. With its welcoming locals and diversity of options, it’s the perfect country to start in.

Planning a trip to Southeast Asia can be overwhelming, as there’s so much to see. My recommendation is to first decide whether you want to explore one country in depth or make your way to a few countries with short stops, with the expectation of returning again to add to your memories.

Don’t pick one country: do them all If you’re pressed for time and are looking for the ultimate adventure, I recommend hitting the ‘once-in-a-lifetime button’ to spend time in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos , particularly during February or March. You’ll encounter everything from Vietnam’s friendly locals to its history, the jungle-strewn and awe-inspiring ruins of Cambodia, to the sleepy traditions and colonial charm of Laos. One key stop is Hue, the former capital of Vietnam, where you will find its very own Forbidden City, once home to Vietnam’s emperor and his court.

Best for families On the occasion that you’re bringing the whole family along, do not skip Cambodia! Upon approaching the sprawling temple complex of Angkor Wat, you’ll feel like Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider in one. These incredible stone structures and carvings are a prime example of Khmer temple architecture, and form the largest religious monument in the world.

Depending on your schedule, here are the trips and destinations I recommend for the following times of year.

October-November: Vietnam to Laos Biking November-December:   Vietnam and Cambodia January through April: This is one of the best times of year to visit, so I recommend our classic Vietnam trip, adding in Cambodia and Laos , Vietnam Walking trip, or Mekong River Biking trip. April through July: Mekong River Biking, or our Vietnam Family trip. August-September: Go to the Amalfi Coast  and plan your visit another time! (You’ll thank me for this decision!)

Where to Stay

Phum Baitang , Siem Reap, Cambodia A gateway to Angkor Wat, this lush resort is set amidst eight acres of gardens, including lemongrass meadows and rice paddies.

Amantaka , Luang Prabang, Laos Located on a historic garden estate, this airy, French colonial resort feature high-ceilinged suites, an on-site spa, all surrounded by palm and mango trees.

Six Senses Ninh Van Bay , Vietnam You’ll feel as if you’re on your own private island here in the middle of nowhere, but it’s actually situated on a remote peninsula north of Nha Trang. It’s got a luxurious Robinson Crusoe feeling with a barefoot luxury, ‘I just paddle-boarded to breakfast’ vibe. And who doesn’t want that?

Amanoi , Nha Trang, Vietnam

The best way to see Southeast Asia: by bike!

If you want a mellow ride that’s relatively flat, my favourite ride in the Mekong Delta features a jaunt through local markets, rice paddies blowing in the breeze, and sometimes even joining along in the commute with local kids on their way to school!

Biking the terrain in Northern Vietnam is also something I’m particular to: you will cross rivers, pass through rural villages, and even travel amongst towering limestone peaks. Feel like an adventurer and supplement your rides by taking a local boat through tunnels or hiking dramatic ‘dragon spine’ mountains for the full experience.

I’ve already touched upon this if you head to Cambodia, but the loveliest scenic bike routes are, unsurprisingly, found when you leisurely pedal from one splendid temple to another. The roads are flat, and you’ll find some nice 10 to 15 km stretches that will give you some room to open up and speed up. (Also, there are less chickens along the road to slow you down!)

which is better to visit cambodia or vietnam

Cambodia is an incredible country that warrants more than a four day visit- save it until you have more time.

Regardless of the money, it is a very costly choice to take the days away from Vietnam- better to add them to your existing destinations (don’t add more) in Vietnam

Cambodia is another awesome country and needs a stand alone visit with flexibility and time to really experience all it has on offer.

Travel Showdown: Cambodia vs Laos

Tourist attractions of laos and cambodia.

One of the most important things to analyze when choosing where to go is the tourist attractions of the destinations… after all, we all want to see and do the best and most interesting things. Between Cambodia and Laos, Cambodia leads this one, and the reason is simple: the Angkor Wat complex.

When a country has a tourist attraction like Angkor Wat is doomed to win this topic. Angkor is probably our favorite attraction worldwide because of its history, beauty, and size. It’s so interesting and beautiful that you could spend several full days only exploring the complex. We were there for three days and wouldn’t mind going back. 🙂

Cambodia has its tourism centered around Angkor Wat, and almost everyone going to Cambodia has his eyes set on this archeological complex. However, there are quite a few additional places to go, like Phnom Penn, Sihanoukville, the islands ( Koh ta Kiev, Koh Rong), and Kompot.

How to visit Angkor-Wat Cambodia or Laos

Laos is a very pleasant country to travel to, and despite not having Angkor Wat, it also has a big tourist attraction, Luang Prabang. Luang Prabang is a UNESCO heritage town with very peculiar architecture, mixing French colonialism with Eastern Asia. It is really worth visiting Luang Prabang for 2 or 3 days .

Though Laos has other exciting places, like Vientiane, the Mekong River, Pakse, and Vang Vieng .

Cambodia or Laos

To sum it up, Cambodia has to win this one, and quite clearly, because of Angkor Wat. Besides Angkor Wat, the countries are similarly attractive, with plenty of cool things to do and a distinct culture you can explore, though I would say that Laos is slightly better.

Outdoor activities in Cambodia and Laos

When it comes to outdoor activities, both countries have a lot to offer and are quite good destinations for adventure travelers and outdoors enthusiasts. Between Laos and Cambodia, it’s a very close call, but I think Laos is slightly better as it has a wide variety of things to see and do outdoors. But let’s have a closer look.

Cambodia has plenty of outdoor activities, particularly by the coast and the islands, where you can go snorkeling, diving, kayaking, and many other water-related activities. There’s also the possibility of exploring the major towns of Phnom Penn, Sihanoukville, and Siem Reap by bike.

Laos is a destination for outdoors lovers, as most of its attractions are on the outside. In Laos, some of the best things to do are the Kuang Si Falls, close to Luang Prabang , tubing in Vang Vieng , chasing waterfalls in Pakse, the Kong Lor Cave , and the amazing gibbon experience close to Huay Xai.

Entrance to the Kong Lor Cave

The natural beauty of Laos vs. Cambodia

In terms of natural beauty, we preferred Laos to Cambodia. There’s something really beautiful about the north and center of Laos, with the mountains, the Karst and limestone cliffs, and obviously the Mekong River.

Cambodia isn’t nearly as mountainous, and it’s more similar to the south of Laos, which isn’t as dramatic and pretty as the north. On the other hand, Cambodia has stunning beaches and islands, but we will talk about it in the next segment.

So, Laos also wins this.

Mekong River in Laos

Where are the best beaches?

Well, this is a rather easy one… Laos doesn’t have a coast, and Cambodia has some of the most underrated beaches in the world.

Despite not having a shore, Laos has the Mekong and many other rivers where you can bathe. The Kuang Si Falls and Vang Vieng are great examples, but I’m not sure you can really consider any of those beaches.

Cambodia is the opposite and has some of the best destinations on its islands. We really enjoyed our time in Koh ta Kiev and considered this island a lost paradise for those looking for lesser-known but still wonderful beaches. We were supposed to do a day trip and stayed for three days.

Koh Rong is the most famous island in Cambodia and is a backpacker’s island with plenty of bars, restaurants, and parties. Yet, the island is big, and some of its beaches have been considered among the best in the world.

How to go to Kho Ta Kiev

Culture and Heritage of Laos and Cambodia

We have said this before, but it’s difficult to lose the culture and heritage segment when a country has Angkor Wat.

Yet, Cambodia has more than just Angkor Wat, the whole country is covered with old Khmer buildings, Pagodas, and other historical buildings. Here, we need to mention the very recent and tragic Killing Fields and S21 Prison.

These aren’t for everyone, as it’s a really heavy experience, but it was a very important period of Cambodia’s recent past.

Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields Cambodia

Laos is also interesting regarding heritage, particularly the UNESCO town of Luang Prabang, with its mix of Asian and French cultures. Luang Prabang and the capital, Vientiane, also have plenty of Buddhist traditions, temples, and a culture you can explore. Though, in general, Cambodia wins this one.

Cambodia vs Laos

The Vibe – Cambodia vs Laos

This is always an interesting but really subjective topic on these comparisons. It depends not only on the destinations but also on how each traveler feels when visiting. For us, Laos had a better vibe, we enjoyed our time there very much. Why?

Laos has an incredibly relaxed atmosphere, with very few mass tourism and modest people. This together creates a very interesting vibe, perfect for slow overland traveling or at least unwinding for a few weeks. It’s just another world from the crazy, stressful, high-intensity day-by-day that most of us live in.

Top attractions of Laos

In this aspect, Cambodia is quite a different society, translating into a very different travel experience. Cambodia is much more stressful, particularly in Siem Reap, Phnom Penn, and Sihanoukville. Those are destinations with many people, both locals and tourists. They are very interesting, and if you are looking for a party vibe and always have things to do, then they are good destinations.

We preferred Laos’ laid-back vibe to Cambodia’s agitated day-by-day, so it wins this one.

useful travel information about Cambodia

Resorts – Laos vs Cambodia

I don’t think either country is among the best destinations for those who want to enjoy high-end resorts. Either way, both have a few options to explore…

In Laos, most of the best resorts are in Luang Prabang, which only increases its attractiveness as a tourist destination. Some of the best resorts include Lao Spirit Resort (in Luang Prabang), the River Resort ( in Champasak), Nam Ou Riverside Hotel (also in Luang Prabang).

Cambodia also has a few resorts and high-end hotels. In fact, it’s superior to Laos because it has beach resorts and many more tourists, which created the demand for a wide range of accommodations, including high-end resorts. Two of the best resorts in Cambodia are Song Saa Private Island (right next to Koh Rong) and Phum Baitang Resort (in Siam Reap).

Summing up, Cambodia wins this one clearly, but neither of the countries is a top-tier destination for resort lovers.

Best Beaches of Cambodia

Which is more eco-friendly? Laos or Cambodia?

This is something that both countries are pretty bad at… Laos and Cambodia aren’t really concerned about the environment; unfortunately, the amount of trash you’ll see on the ground is impressive.

Cambodia, in particular, is a very dirty country, and expect to see garbage spread all over, particularly on the side of the roads and bigger towns. The town of Siem Reap is horrible, but fortunately, this doesn’t translate to Angkor Archeological Park. Sihanoukville is also full of garbage, particularly the main beach. This was probably the dirtiest beach I have ever seen…

Laos is considerably better than Cambodia, with less visible trash; however, this doesn’t mean it’s an eco-friendly country, as you’ll quickly see lots of plastic and cans being thrown away to the floor or rivers. Consequently, many rivers (and the Mekong in particular) are polluted.

Nevertheless, Laos wins this one.

Travel destinations and tourists in Cambodia

Shopping – Cambodia vs Laos

In terms of shopping, I believe these countries are similar to their neighbors. Both Laos and Cambodia have famous night markets where tourists can buy anything and everything.

Despite being very similar in this regard, we believe that there are more markets and a wider variety of products in Cambodia. This probably happens because Cambodia is more popular and, thus, there are many more tourists.

Thus, Cambodia wins over Laos, but other countries in the region (Thailand and Malaysia, for example) would be better choices when it comes to shopping and markets.

Nightlife – Laos vs Cambodia

Regarding nightlife, Cambodia is the winner as it has a much livelier nightlife, with more people and more things to do.

Cambodia has many restaurants, bars, and entertainment to keep tourists occupied for a while in the touristy areas. Sihanoukville, Siem Reap, and Phnom Penn are the more lively areas of Cambodia. You should be aware that Cambodia is also internationally known for having some sexual tourism, but the worst part is that it sometimes involves youngsters.

Laos, as we said above, is a very relaxed country with a very small nightlife. Apart from Luang Prabang and Vientiane, there are very few options in Laos, and even within these cities, the offers aren’t that extensive when compared to Cambodia and… well, most of the world…

Cambodia obviously wins this one, clearly…

50 thing about Cambodia

Food scene – where can we eat best? Laos or Cambodia?

When it comes to their cuisine, both the Laotian and the Khmer cuisine aren’t well famous internationally. Yet, they are interesting with some nice flavors, and heavily influenced by Thai food . In fact, both Laos and Cambodia share many dishes with Thailand.

Most of the tourist restaurants and street vendors in both countries will sell very similar things, sometimes with similar names, others with local variations.

One thing that’s very iconic in Laos is the Lao Sandwich, which is a baguette with whatever ingredients you like, which usually includes eggs, avocado, chicken, cheese, vegetables, and a sauce… Apart from these iconic sandwiches, the food in Laos is colorful, vibrant, and packed with herbs and flavor.

What to eat in Luang Prabang Laos

In Cambodia, the most memorable thing we ate was the amok, which is made with filleted catfish (or any other protein) and covered in a thick coconut sauce with eggs, fish sauce, and palm sugar and seasoned with a curry paste. It isn’t spicy, as most of the food in Cambodia isn’t as nearly as spicy as Thailand’s.

We really can’t choose a winner here, so I’m going to give it a tie – a very strong tie. You’ll find delicious and exotic food both in Laos and Cambodia.

Food and eating in Cambodia

The people of Laos and Cambodia

The locals and how we interact with them are two of the most important things for us to really enjoy a destination. This is a topic where Cambodia and Laos differ a lot. While Cambodia is a very fast-paced country, with many things happening all the time, where locals are always busy, Laos is the opposite.

In Cambodia, you should be very aware of scams and people always trying to sell you stuff or forcing you to buy things/services. They are used to tourists, and they know how to interact with them. We should make clear that Cambodians are mostly nice, but it is a very poor country with a developed tourism sector. This means that travelers are one of the major income sources, and they need you to make money.

In Laos, the locals are more laid back, sometimes so laid back that it seems they don’t know how to interact with foreigners. Tourism in Laos is at a very starting point (except for Luang Prabang), making the interaction with locals feel much more real and down to earth.

We have to be honest here, we loved the Laotians and their introverted way, so Laos has to win this topic.

Best things to do in Laos

Which has better travel infrastructure

We have said it before, but both Laos and Cambodia are still in their early stages of development, so it’s natural that their travel-related infrastructure is still under development. However, it’s clear that it has improved in recent years, and it’s likely to continue improving.

Earlier, we said that Laos is perfect for slow traveling, but the thing is that you don’t really have many other options… Traveling overland in Laos is an experience itself (the slow boat to Luang Prabang is a great example), and if you choose to use public transport (buses in particular), it’s something you won’t forget easily.

Thus, you’ll need time, sometimes a full day, just to reach a destination. You shouldn’t have problems finding guesthouses and cheap accommodations, there are more than enough for travelers, but mid-range and high-end hotels may be a problem outside the biggest destinations.

Cambodia isn’t much better than Laos really, but it is a little more prepared. There is a wider range of accommodations, with many more hostels, guesthouses, and hotels, mostly because there are also more tourists. In terms of traveling around the country, it’s also slow, but the country has fewer mountains, and there are more shuttles, so it makes things easier.

In hindsight, Cambodia wins this one, but I don’t think it has a fully developed tourist sector, it just means that Laos is even less developed.

Transportation in Laos

Travel safety in Cambodia and Laos

In terms of safety, we believe that these countries are at a similar level. We have never felt really unsafe in either of them, though some places aren’t really pleasant to walk around at night.

Cambodia, in particular, sometimes has a stressful atmosphere because of all the people and noise around you. Laos is just laidback and easy-going, but I wouldn’t also suggest roaming at night carefree.

In both countries, you should be aware of food safety and be careful with what you consume. If you are unsure for some reason, don’t. You really don’t want to get food poisoned in Laos or Cambodia. Believe us, we know it!

You should be aware that Cambodia is quite famous for its travel-related scams, particularly using children. These scams aren’t really dangerous, but they might trick you into paying for things that you shouldn’t. In this regard, you should know that the children selling souvenirs might be working for a network and don’t really gain from it. Worse: they should be in school, not begging/selling.

Laos, on the other hand, doesn’t really have those issues, but it’s famous for the bombies. Laos was the most bombed country in history, and many of these bombs are yet to be found and exploded. This sounds very, very dangerous, but it isn’t as bad as it sounds, because the main touristy areas have a much lower risk.

We believe Laos is slightly safer than Cambodia and thus wins this round.

What to do in Laos

Which is more expensive? Laos or Cambodia

The first thing we should note is that both countries are incredibly cheap, no matter what kind of traveler you are. Moreover, they are among the cheapest countries to travel in the world. So, this shouldn’t really be an issue when choosing between traveling to Laos or Cambodia.

Anyway, in our experience, backpacking as a couple in Laos is slightly more expensive than in Cambodia, in the day-by-day things, like food and accommodation. However, the tourist attractions in Cambodia (read: Angkor Wat) weigh a lot on the budget, making this comparison harder.

Either way, you should be able to spend less than 30 USD per person per day in both countries. In fact, if you are thrifty, you may get closer to 20-25 USD per day.

If we have a look at the prices of traveling in the most touristy towns of both countries, we notice that Siem Reap is slightly more expensive than Luang Prabang and Phnom Penn slightly more expensive than Vientiane.

To sum it up, the differences are very small, and it really depends much more on what kind of traveler you are than the country you choose. When it comes to costs, it’s a tie.

What to do in Angkor-Wat Cammbodia

Is Cambodia more touristy than Laos?

Yes! There are many more tourists in Cambodia than in Laos, which is understandable because of the great world wonder of Angkor Wat. So, if you want to visit Angkor, you’ll have to understand that you won’t have the place to yourself and you’ll see huge crowds. Even other destinations in Cambodia have many tourists, but it’s still possible to find hidden gems like Koh ta Kiev, which has few tourists.

Laos is way fewer tourists, and only Luang Prabang is really on the tourist trail. If you prefer to have the destinations almost to yourself, then Laos is your best choice. It’s almost unbelievable that places like Kong Lor have almost no one there…

So, Laos wins this one as it’s less crowded and has fewer tourists.

Best Island of Cmabodia Kho Ta Kiev

Laos or Cambodia: Our verdict

Cambodia and Laos are very similar in many aspects, but when we look at them closely, we find some relevant differences.

You should choose Laos if you prefer a rural country with a very relaxed vibe and perfect for slow traveling. It’s also amazingly beautiful with some nice tourist attractions and without many tourists.

You should choose Cambodia if you prefer a more crowded destination with a major tourist attraction, Angkor Wat, and some of the best beaches in the world. It’s also a nice destination if you are looking for a more vibrant society with lots of things happening in the major cities.

Both countries are wonderful, with beautiful settings, and cheap and overall nice backpackers destinations.

Cambodia VS Vietnam VS Thailand

which is better to visit cambodia or vietnam

Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand are all countries in what was once known as Indochina , the region of Southeast Asia influenced most by both Chinese and Indian cultures, and which were all influenced greatly by the Khmer Empire and the French colonization. The three nations are all devoutly Buddhist in religion, and have many similarities in the forms of their Buddhist religion, which show in the various ceremonies and rituals performed.

As neighboring countries, they share similar climates in general, and have many similarities in the geography and geology of the landscapes. Culturally, there are as many similarities as there are differences, and as such, while modern cultures may differ, much of the cultures have come from a single source.

Cambodia vs Vietnam vs Thailand Cultural Comparison

Religion has been the major cultural inspiration throughout the long history of Cambodia , and has had a profound effect on he way of life in the country. The nation has developed a unique belief system dating from the time of the Khmer Empire that has combined the ancient animistic religion of the people with the influences of Buddhism and Hinduism that were brought into Cambodia from India.

Similarly, Thailand’s religious and cultural beliefs have been largely influenced by Buddhism from India , as well as from China, that have been overlaid on the former animistic form of religious worship that was predominant on the Indochinese Peninsula thousands of years ago. However, the main difference in Thailand is that they have only recently adopted a trend of nationalism and centralization from Europe at the start of the 19th century, which formed a religion based around the ruling Chakri Dynasty and controlled by a council of monks.

Thailand monk

Vietnamese culture , in contrast, has been mainly influenced by the Han Chinese culture from around the 2nd century BC to the present day, and has changed very little over the last 2,000 years. With a millennium of Chinese Han rule, Vietnamese culture has taken a turn that neither of the other two cultures did, in terms of politics, governance, and the Confucian moral and social ethics.

Cambodia vs Vietnam vs Thailand Scenery Comparison

Cambodia is a land that is mainly made up of tropical rainforests and fertile agricultural lands , with lush green highlands to the northwest and southwest. Central to the landscape is the abundance of rivers and lakes, with a central lake, Tonle Sap, providing the water source for most of the country.

Cambodia rainforests

Thailand has a very varied landscape , characterized by the mountains in the north, civered with lush rainforests in the central northern area, and the sub-tropical coastal regions in the south, which are sometimes dry and desolate with less rainfall than most coastal areas due to the narrow width of the peninsula. The center and eastern regions of Thailand are flat, rice-field filled areas with intense dry seasons that cause drought and heavy monsoon seasons that cause flooding and landslides.

Vietnam also has a very varied topography, with high mountains and lush rolling hills in the north of the country , which have a very different climate to the rest of the country due to their altitude. The central area of Vietnam has hills down one side and coast on the other, with farmlands in between in the flat Terai-like region between the two. To the south, the landscape is flatter, with rolling plains dotted with small green hills.

Cambodia vs Vietnam vs Thailand Beach Relaxing Comparison

Cambodia is well known for its temple complex in the north, but less well-known for its beaches, despite having some of Asia’s best beaches on its short coastline. Sihanoukville, the main area of good beaches, lies in the southwest of the country, and while popular with some tourists, is not a major reason for visiting the country.

Check for the most classic Cambodia tour with Beach Relaxing .

Vietnam is renowned for having some of Asia’s best beaches, and it is even said that the best beach in the world is in Vietnam. Beach vacations are a predominant tourist attraction in Vietnam, and with its long eastern coast, the country has more beaches than both Cambodia and Thailand put together. While they are not yet as popular as the Thai beaches, they are growing in popularity as more people discover them.

Vietnam Nra Trang

Thailand is well known for having some of the best beaches in the world, and places such as Pattaya, Phuket, Koh Samui, and Krabi are world-renowned for being popular beach-vacation destinations. Thailand also has a more relaxed atmosphere on its beaches, though a change occurs when night falls to one of partying and fun.

Cambodia vs Vietnam vs Thailand Tour Time Comparison

Cambodia is one of the countries that, while having only a few interesting attractions, inspires long vacations to explore the immensity of those few attractions, However, spending more than a few days at each location can sometimes bring on a boredom of too much of the same thing, so it is really the place with the shortest required time of the three.

Thailand, in contrast, has a huge number of interesting attractions, though most of them are centered around the beaches and adventure sports areas. While the country is much larger than Vietnam and Cambodia, traveling to the outlying areas in the north is long and arduous, and mostly avoided by the average tourist, despite having great landscapes and interesting people.

With its long, thin shape and variety of climates and topography, Vietnam is the place to spend most of the tour of the three Indochinese countries. In the north there are the islands of Halong Bay, which really require 3-4 days to explore, and even that is not really enough. However, cruising around islands can become tiresome after several days, after which time it is on to the other attractions, While the country does have some great beaches along its eastern coast, this is also the place where most of the ancient history of Vietnam happened, and when you move back from the beaches, the inland areas of the cities are a wealth of Vietnamese history and culture. In the south, the vast plains leave little to be admired outside the vastness of the landscape, except for the stunning area of the Mekong Delta. A huge tract of land with a vast network of natural canals and rivers, this amazing area requires a few days to explore just a small part, and you could spend a week or more in this awesome scenery without feeling over-delta’d at all.

Cambodia vs Vietnam vs Thailand Tourism Development Comparison

Thailand has been a major tourist destination for more than 50 years , and shows no sign of dropping in the global tourism rankings. As the main economic contributor in Thailand, development of the tourism infrastructure is constant and ever-expanding, often taking up areas of former farmland to convert to tourist resorts. Tourism in Thailand has been increasing year on year since the 1960s, generating more than 78 billion dollars in 2017. Thailand is ranked as number 35 out of 141 tourist nations around the world, yet Bangkok actually ranks second in the world’s top 20 most-visited cities, right after London, England.

While tourism is one of Cambodia’s most important economic sectors, the country has only been open to tourists since the mid-1990s , but has grown exponentially since then to become a major player in Asian tourism. Starting out with less than 100,000 tourists in the beginning, Cambodia now sees around five and a half million tourist arrivals every year, and those figures are increasing annually. However, travel outside the most popular tourist areas is still hard, and in some places impossible due to the vast number of landmines that are still concealed in parts of the country.

As a whole, Vietnam is a relative newcomer to international tourism , which began with Nha Trang, Doi Moi, and Phan Thiet in the late 1990s. While you could say that it started in Nha Trang during the 19060s and 1970s, as recreation for the soldiers stations in Saigon, at the end of the war, international travelers were banned from the country. @,000 saw the real take-off of Vietnam’s tourist industry, and it has gone from strength to strength since then, with around 6.8 million visitors by 2012, and increasing to more than 10 million in 2016.

Cambodia vs Vietnam vs Thailand Tour Cost Comparison

Of the three countries, Cambodia is undoubtedly the cheapest of the three countries to travel through. With is low economy and cheap travel fares, it is the ultimate in budget travel destinations. On average, for travel, food, and accommodation in Cambodia, you can expect to pay around 10 to 12 US dollars per day, though if you travel to explore the ruined temples of the Angkor Temple Complex at Siem Reap, then than can increase to around 20-30 dollars per day, due to the higher costs in the tourist attraction and the city of Siem Reap.

Next would come Vietnam, with an average cost of around 15 to 20 dollars per day. Accommodation and travel can be really cheap in Vietnam, but it is let down by the higher cost of food and drinks, with a cup of coffee costing around two dollars, and a simple baguette reaching as much as 3 dollars. If you include a tour of Halong Bay on a boat cruise, and a short trek in Sapa, you can increase that cost to around 25 dollars per day.

Thailand, despite being a cheap place to live, is not as cheap for those just on vacation. However, if you steer clear of the real tourist traps in Thailand, you can make it a good budget location. The beach areas are always more expensive than the rural areas, and if you are staying in Pattaya or Koh Samui, expect to pay around 50 dollars per day. Try moving out of the touristy location and into the heartland of Thailand, where the real people are, and if you travel to the north to Chiang Mai or east to Sakon Nakhon, you can expect your daily costs to drop to around 30-35 dollars per day.

The best place to go depends on what you want to see and do while you are on vacation. If you love beaches and just cannot get enough of that white sand and rolling breakers, then central Vietnam is the place to go. Beaches are cheaper in Vietnam than in Thailand, where they are more commercialized.

If you are looking for a relaxing break, try northern Vietnam’s Hanoi and Halong Bay or head to the Temple Complex at Angkor or the hinterland of Thailand, where rural farmers still stand in their rice fields with a water buffalo to fertilize the crops. For that great city break, Bangkok, Saigon, and Phnom Penh are all great places to visit.

For a lifetime Indochina tour , traveling Vietnam Cambodia Thailand together is most recommended.
