The Ultimate 14-Day Alaska Cruise With Princess

Coral Princess in Alaska

An Alaska cruise with Princess Cruises  offers a North America bucket list adventure to see fjords, majestic mountains, and an abundance of wildlife. From the comfort of a luxury vessel, can you see tidewater glaciers that aren’t accessible by land.

While the Crown Princess, Ruby Princess, Royal Princess, and newest Discovery Princess offer roundtrip itineraries, consider booking a back-to-back itinerary instead.

You can book an extended 14-day cruise on the Grand, Sapphire, or Asian-inspired Majestic Princess. These 14-day itineraries are offered from Vancouver, Canada.

On the 14-day Voyage of the Glaciers Grand Adventure, you’ll travel further north, and see areas of Alaska which aren’t reachable on a return itinerary.

With a stop in Whittier and a scheduled sailing into an Alaskan Fjord, you’ll also experience more hours of daylight. During the summer solstice, expect the sun to set at 11:30 pm, and sunrise five hours later.

Princess Cruises Relationship With Alaska

One of the reasons I chose Princess Cruises for an Alaska itinerary is their relationship with Alaska. For more than fifty years, Princess Cruises’ ships have sailed to Alaska.

Cruisers can choose an Alaska cruise tour that combines a cruise with a land tour. By staying at a Princess Wilderness Lodge, you’ll enjoy exploring Denali National Park.

While I didn’t book a Princess cruise and land tour, my 14-day back-to-back Alaska itinerary had different glacier viewings each way, which made the vacation doubly magical.

Also, because I live in Vancouver, Canada, sailing back was cheaper than flying. Hard to believe, right?

The Coral Princess cruise ship sailing in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska

But, if you snag an Alaskan cruise deal as I did, the 7-day Alaska return cruise was less expensive than the cost of a one-way flight. Additionally, I could extend my vacation by seven days (happy dance!).

When sailing out of Vancouver, Sapphire Princess, Majestic Princess, and Grand Princess offer 14-day or seven-day back-to-back itineraries. When considering a 14-day or back-to-back itinerary, compare the prices of the two options.

Sometimes, it’s cheaper to book two one-week cruises than one 14-day vacation. Especially when there are perks such as free onboard credit, you’ll double your credit by choosing two cruises instead of one.

It’s important to note when booking a back-to-back cruise, you may not get the same cabin on both cruises. I had different staterooms, but moving rooms was effortless.

I packed my bags, and my steward moved everything the following morning. Plus, my new cabin was available to me immediately.

Embarkation In Vancouver

  • Location:   999 Canada Place in downtown Vancouver

While Princess Cruises offer sailings from Seattle, Los Angeles , and San Francisco , a 14-day B2B embarks in Vancouver, Canada. When choosing to embark in Seattle Vs. Vancouver , only Vancouver offers one-way itineraries.

For those flying into Vancouver, Canada Place (or the Vancouver cruise terminal) is easily accessible by taxi, Uber, or my choice, Vancouver’s rapid transit, Skytrain. Canada Place in downtown, can accommodate up to four cruise ships a day, and on my embarkation day, there were three ships in port.

With three or four vessels loading, getting onboard may be painfully slow. This is not unusual at Canada Place.

The difference between Vancouver’s cruise port and many others is that each passenger needs to clear immigration since everyone is leaving one country and visiting another.

When arriving in Canada from a country other than the United States, all passengers must have an ESTA (electronic system for travel authorization). While the form is obtainable at the cruise terminal, it’s best to have it beforehand.

Alaska Cruise Weather

The Alaska season is short, from May to September. Depending on your sail date, expect temperatures of 35F to 81F, with lots of possibilities for variations. Alaska cruises are far less formal than cruises in other destinations.

On my first cruise to Alaska, the July weather was bitterly cold. So, when packing for the inside passage cruise , pack for warmth over style. Recommendations include a fleece jacket , base layers, wraps, and sweaters in preparation for the cold, wet weather.

Wouldn’t you know, on the next trip, Alaska experienced a heatwave so I could lay by the outdoor pool, and I got sunburnt. It just goes to show, that it’s essential to have a packing list for the hot and the cold.

Visiting Hubbard Glacier on a sunny day

Savoring hot weather allowed me to enjoy Princess Cruises’ signature “movies under the stars” on multiple occasions. Even when it got a little cool in the evening, I could cuddle up under a cozy blanket and savor some complimentary popcorn.

Out of the 14 days, it drizzled on turnaround day in Whittier and cruising through College Fjord. The other 12 days had glorious sunshine, perfect for glacier viewings and visiting ports.

Packing For A 14-Day Alaskan Cruise

One of the many benefits of cruising with Princess is their self-service laundry facilities. Since Alaska’s weather is unpredictable, I tend to take everything but the kitchen sink.

But I also pack Tide pods and a container of quarters so I can wash during my vacation. I’ve heard the laundry is free on the Discovery Princess. However, we paid USD 3 to was and USD 3 for a dryer on the Majestic.

On an Alaska itinerary, pack for the cold; for times you’ll be next to a glacier. This includes a winter jacket, or my choice, a 3-in-1 jacket ,  so the different layers are useful for port days and around the ship .

Also, pack a hat or toque, gloves, scarves, and layers, which are essential in the shoulder months but not necessarily during the summer’s peak.

It’s best to have waterproof items for port days. This is where the outer layer of that 3-in-1 coat comes in handy. Waterproof runners or boots, a compact umbrella, wool socks, and fleece are a must.

But, as I learned on three of my cruises, it’s also vital to pack for the warmth too. A bathing suit is great for a hot day by the pool. Even if the weather is cool, most ships have indoor pools, hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms.

The steam room and hot tubs are a blessing after hours next to a glacier. Along with a bathing suit, take sunglasses and sunscreen too.

If you plan to hike, pack bug repellent or use mosquito bracelets. But the essential items are your camera and binoculars. Alaska scenery and wildlife are stunning, so you want to see it and capture it to savor forever.

Ports Of Call With Princess

Cruising a back-to-back Alaska cruise with Princess, the ports are identical. For some, that might seem slightly discouraging.

However, I embraced the idea of docking in the same ports twice because Alaska offers the coolest (no pun intended) excursions, which meant I could do and see more of what Alaska has to offer.

On my Coral Princess 14-day cruise, the ship stopped in Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway, twice. Instead of pre-planning all my port days, I chose some Alaska shore excursions on the outgoing cruise only.

Cruising through College Fjord

During the cruise, I conversed with other passengers, and based on their reviews, I chose a different port activity on my vacation’s second leg. A typical 14-day Princess Alaska cruise looks like this:

Day 1: Vancouver, BC, Canada Day 2: At sea Day 3: Ketchikan Day 4: Juneau Day 5: Skagway Day 6: Glacier Bay National Park (cruising) Day 7: College Fjord (cruising) Day 8: Anchorage (Whittier) Day 9: Hubbard Glacier (cruising) Day 10: Glacier Bay National Park (cruising) Day 11: Skagway Day 12: Juneau Day 13: Ketchikan Day 14: At sea Day 15: Vancouver, BC, Canada

The only port that feels like a city is Juneau, Alaska’s capital. While landlocked, the city still has urban living comforts, including the regular fast-food franchises and popular stores.

This bigger city offers a good selection of port excursions, great places to eat Alaska crab, and a large downtown area to explore.

Juneau can accommodate four docked ships and several tenders. Princess vessels dock downtown. Most things are within walking distance, including the Roberts Tramway, which offers impressive Juneau and Gastineau Channel views and some hiking trails near the port.

Coral Princess in Juneau, Alaska

On my northbound Alaska cruise, I chose a catamaran whale-watching tour with guests at my dinner table. With eight in the group, I was able to negotiate an incredible price in port.

Whale watching is excellent in Juneau, and most operators are so confident you’ll see whales that they offer a guarantee.

After the tour, I wandered through downtown Juneau and visited the famous Red Dog Saloon. Located at 278 South Franklin Street, the oldest Juneau attraction has notable items on the menu, including a duck fart (beer).

On my return trip, I took a bus to Mendenhall Glacier and hiked to Nugget Falls. Walking the boardwalk also allowed me to see lots of salmon in the creek. Mendenhall Glacier is a popular locale to spot black bears who fish for food in the nearby stream.

Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska

If you don’t have a budget, I’d highly recommend a Juneau dog sledding tour on a glacier . This must-do port excursion is exhilarating and a ton of fun and something I did on my first cruise to Alaska.

While dog sledding is an expensive excursion, how often will you have the opportunity to fly to the top of a glacier and mush a dog team around a glacier? It’s advisable to book months in advance because these tours always sell out.

The tiny town of Skagway grew out of the Klondike gold rush. It’s a town frozen in time and still looks as it did all those years ago. With less than 1,000 residents, it survives primarily on cruise tourism.

While small in size, the town offers a variety of excursions. The White Pass and Yukon Route trains attract the most cruises guests.

It generally provides a train for each ship and does two runs a day. The roundtrip journey takes less than three hours and the views across wooden trestles and through the mountains are spectacular.

White Pass & Yukon Route train

For a budget-friendly similar journey, take a bus tour instead. The bus follows the train for part of the way but being at a lower elevation; guests can see waterfalls not visible on the train.

If you have never experienced the mountains, taking a train or bus excursion offers one of the world’s most picturesque views. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the breathtaking panorama of snow-capped rugged mountains, waterfalls, and glaciers.

During my southbound cruise , I took a hiking excursion in Skagway instead. The Chilkoot Trail Hike and Float tour combine the Chilkoot hiking trail with a raft ride down the Taiya River.

On this Skagway excursion, I learned that mosquitoes could be rampant in Alaska at certain times of the year. I made a mental note to bring repellant next time.

Skagway offers many great tours and excursions. Other options of things to do include hiking along the coastline, panning for gold, visiting the Gold Rush Cemetery, ziplining, renting a car and driving to Emerald Lake in the Yukon, and browsing the unique shops in town.

Ketchikan, Alaska, is the southeasternmost city in Alaska and is located at the inside passage entrance. It’s by far my favorite stop on an Alaskan itinerary. The mountainous Tongass National Forest surrounds Ketchikan, famous for having the most extensive collection of standing totem poles in the world.

Princess and Holland America lines have premium docking spots downtown. Being downtown, everything was just a walk away. The colorful welcome arch greeted me, and the liquid sunshine gauge gave me quite a chuckle.

Walking Creek Street

Ketchikan is known as the “Salmon Capital of the World” due to its abundance of salmon, with fishing and canning being some of its primary industries. Here, visitors can often see the salmon swimming upriver to spawn.

If you want to try your luck at catching some salmon, local stores rent gear and sell licenses. Ketchikan’s Stedman Bridge is a popular spot for anglers. It also provides an ideal place to view sea otters.

I did not take a port excursion on either of my two stops. Instead, I enjoyed a self-guided walking tour of the quaint boutiques on historic Creek Street. Once a “red-light district,” Creek Street’s boardwalk meanders on wooden pilings over Ketchikan Creek.

For those with no budget, Misty Fjords Flightseeing offers the ultimate experience. Imagine soaring over the cliffs of Misty Fjords National Monument with endless waterfalls, crystal blue waters, and trees as far as you can see. Ketchikan is a special place that may captivate you as it did for me.

For bald eagle enthusiasts, the Bering Sea Fishermen’s Tour puts you face-to-face with a few dozen flying eagles. With several eagles swooping down, vying for the same herring, it was amazing there were no mid-air collisions.

Alaska Scenery

Having sailed to Alaska numerous times, I can tell you that the scenery is indescribable. Sailing a Princess Alaska 14-day cruise gave me a sense of peacefulness and serenity that is disappearing in today’s world.

It’s magical spending hours on deck enjoying the majestic mountains, serene waters, and lush rainforests that go on forever. I was looking to escape everyday life’s demands, and this was a place I could truly disconnect and be one with nature.

Alaska’s scenery is forever changing due to climate change. Its massive cluster of glaciers is rapidly receding, affecting the ecosystem of wildlife that reside there. Everywhere I looked, the jaw-dropping landscapes were captivating.

There is nothing more spectacular than seeing a 20-story glacier crack with a rumble of thunder and watching the ice fall into the frigid waters below.

On my 14-day Alaska cruise with Princess, I cruised through Glacier Bay National Park twice. Also, the northbound itinerary included College Fjord while the southbound sailed to Hubbard Glacier.

The Alaska itinerary was more spectacular than I could have imagined, with multiple glacier sightings, all in one cruise. Even on the return cruise, seeing Glacier Bay a second time was just as outstanding as the first instance.

Experience Glacier Bay With Princess

Cruising through Glacier Bay National Park, I was mesmerized by the incredible tidewater glaciers. The phenomenal blue hues of the ice were enchanting, and the immense size of these natural wonders blew me away. It’s an unexpected treat to cruise through this UNESCO park as only a selection of cruise ships can do so.

Ice calving in Glacier Bay National Park

Princess Cruises Voyage of the Glaciers brings a naturalist on board, who gives terrific talks on Alaska’s wildlife and nature. He talked about living in Alaska and his experiences, which was very captivating.

Expect to spend a day or eight hours in this beautiful park. You’ll see multiple glaciers, such as Margerie, Grand Pacific, and John Hopkins Glaciers, during the cruise. Even with eight hours, I felt it wasn’t enough.

I was afraid to leave the deck in case spectacular calving took place, and I’d miss it. It seems silly, but once you see these icefields, you’ll understand.

To make the experience of Glacier Bay more majestic, Princess Cruises offers an ultimate balcony breakfast. This paid-for service is the perfect way to add a touch of romance to your Alaska adventure should the weather cooperate.

Sanctuary Glacier Bay Day Pass

Alternatively, guests can purchase a Glacier Bay Day Pass to the Sanctuary, an adult-only area on the ship. Passes include a reserved comfy lounger, pillows, warm blankets, and cozy earmuffs to keep you warm.

There are a limited number of Sanctuary passes, so this is a great area to avoid the crowds on the higher decks. The stewards offer all-day pampering from complimentary breakfast, hot chocolate, lunch, fresh fruit, and pastries to suit every Sanctuary guest.

Having toured the Sanctuary on embarkation day, I chose not to purchase such a pass due to multiple obstructions in this area. Since the adult-only area had numerous canopies, I felt viewing Glacier Bay from this location was not the best place for me. However, viewability may vary from ship to ship.

Food Selection

The food selection on the Coral Princess was good, and they catered to my food allergies seamlessly. In fact, the gluten-free bread was the best I’ve had across all cruise lines. The ‘taste of Alaska night” was the big hit of the cruise, but I was surprised to learn, that none of the seafood came from Alaska.

I guess it made sense that cruise lines have contracts with companies worldwide to supply ships with ingredients. I learned the seafood onboard came from New Zealand, of all places. On turnaround day in Whittier, the port did not deliver more food, and this was evident around day ten when the bananas were all brown.

Since it seems ships cruising one-way itineraries are only supplied in Vancouver for two 7-day cruises, in the future, I would only book the northbound cruise if I was sailing for just seven days.

On my back-to-back Alaska cruise, Princess had me seated at a dining table with others sailing the 14 days too. I really enjoyed having the same dinner guests for both cruises.

Turnaround Day In Whittier

The day I arrived in Whittier, it was drizzling miserably. Since I was cruising back-to-back, Princess required me to visit guest services in the morning to settle up my account and obtain a new sail card for the return trip.

Surprisingly, I did not have to attend a second muster drill, which made me do a happy dance! Nor did I have to leave the ship and go through security again.

Despite the rain, I donned my Gore-Tex rain jacket  and took a stroll into Whittier. However, I didn’t walk far because Whittier is a blip of a town with approximately 200 residents.

There wasn’t much to see or do, so I considered renting a car and driving to Anchorage. However, there is only one rental car company, Avis, and the one-day rental starts at USD 250 plus fees.

To make renting a car less desirable, getting to Anchorage requires a drive through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, also known as the Whittier Tunnel.

The tunnel shares the space with train traffic and has just one lane. The direction of travel changes every 30 minutes, but trains can delay vehicles by an additional 30 minutes.

Instead, I headed back to my cruise ship and enjoyed the indoor Lotus pool and hot tubs, which were void of people.

Wildlife Seen On My Alaskan Cruise

Due to the vast acreage of uninhabited land, various wildlife thrives in Alaska, including some endangered species. Humpback whales migrate to Alaska in the spring to feast in the rich waters before heading back to their breeding grounds.

Glacier Bay National Park glacier, and images of Ketchikan, Alaska

During my Princess cruise, I saw numerous bald eagles, countless numbers of humpback whales, some otters, and seals. If you’re lucky, you can sometimes spot orca, fin whales, and porpoises.

The mountains surrounding the port towns offer occasional sightings of Dall sheep and mountain goats. Although I did not see any bears, to be honest, I wasn’t looking for them. You see, I live in Vancouver, Canada, where black bears are regular visitors to my neighborhood.

When preparing for a Voyage of the Glaciers adventure, bring a pair of binoculars. During the cruise, look for the plume of mist and water along the shorelines. Binoculars also increase your chances of seeing bears along the water’s edge, especially in Glacier Bay National Park.

Should you be loyal to another cruise line, Holland America, Norwegian, Celebrity, Regent, Silversea, and Oceania offer 14-day Alaska cruises.

Alaska is a magical place, unlike anywhere else I’ve cruised. It offered a unique cruising experience that left me breathless. Even after four incredible cruises, I have booked my fifth Alaska adventure and can’t wait to experience the pristine wilderness again.

Happy travels ~ Karen

An interior on that cruise. However, I've stayed in many different types of staterooms on Alaska cruises.

Tuesday 13th of September 2022

I just re-read this as our cruise is in August 2023. I have a question. We are driving to Vancouver and since you live there do you recommend anyplace to stay near the cruise port that has a package where you can pay to have your car stored while you are sailing?

Wednesday 14th of September 2022

I'm unaware of any downtown hotel that will store your car for 2 weeks. I use the value long-term car park at the airport and take the Skytrain downtown. The airport parking will save you over 60% of what you'd pay downtown.

Monday 28th of February 2022

We are sailing on the Grand Princess in August 2023 it is a 14 night Glacier Cruise. We did not have to book it as a back to back. Cannot wait to see Alaska!

The Princess 14-day cruises are great because you get to see Glacier Bay National Park twice, Hubbard Glacier, and College Fjord. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time.

4. 11-Day Alaska Inside Passage in 2024 on Crown Princess

Another Alaska cruise from San Francisco is the 11-day Alaska cruise without Glacier Bay National Park. Most Alaska cruises have at least one glacier sea day, and on this cruise the glacier sea day will be at Endicott Arm to see Dawes Glacier. There are cruises like this throughout the summer, along with spring and fall.

📆 What months can you go on this cruise? May, June, July, August

🏔 What glacier sea days does this cruise have? Most cruises go to Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier for the glacier scenic cruising day. There is a cruise in July that goes to Tracy Arm as the scenic cruising day. Alaska Cruise from San Francisco

Best Time to Cruise

Ah, the age-old question: when is the best time to embark on an Alaskan cruise ? The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might think.

Alaska’s cruise season, typically spanning from late April to September , offers varying experiences throughout its months. Here’s what you should know to make an informed choice:

Early Season (Late April to Early June)

  • Weather : Cooler temperatures, with highs often in the 50s or 60s (Fahrenheit).
  • Wildlife : Prime time for bird watching as migratory birds return. Also, a great time to spot bears as they emerge from hibernation.
  • Advantages : Fewer tourists, which means less crowded ports and potentially lower cruise fares.
  • Considerations : Some summer excursions or attractions might not yet be operating.

Sitka WhaleFest

Peak Season (Mid-June to Mid-August)

  • Weather : Warmer with highs often reaching the 70s. However, this is also the rainiest part of the year, especially in coastal regions.
  • Wildlife : This is the time for whale watching, especially humpbacks and orcas. Also, a good chance to see salmon runs.
  • Advantages : All attractions and excursions are operational. Lush green sceneries and longer daylight hours.
  • Considerations : Cruise fares can be at their highest due to demand. Ports can be more crowded.

Late Season (Late August to September)

  • Weather : Cooler temperatures return, with an increased chance of snow as September progresses.
  • Wildlife : A decrease in whale sightings but an increase in land wildlife like moose and caribou as they prepare for winter.
  • Advantages : Stunning fall foliage, especially in the interior regions. Potential for Northern Lights sightings in late September.
  • Considerations : Some attractions start winding down operations, especially as September ends.

Glacier Bay

Factors to Consider When Choosing Your Cruise Time

  • Budget : If you’re looking for deals, the shoulder months of May and September might offer better prices.
  • Wildlife Interests : Determine if you’re more interested in marine life, bird watching, or land mammals to pick your ideal time.
  • Crowd Comfort : If you prefer fewer crowds, consider cruising during the early or late season.
  • Weather Preference : If you’re keen on experiencing the warmest weather, peak season might be for you, but remember to pack an umbrella!

Remember, no matter when you choose to cruise, Alaska’s splendors will undoubtedly captivate you. Each season offers its own unique charm, ensuring that every cruiser’s experience is distinct and memorable.

Alaska cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

A laska might be one of the most beautiful places in the world, but it's rugged and can be tricky to get around. Explore the Last Frontier by cruise ship, and you can travel to gold rush towns, glaciers, Alaska Native heritage sites and natural areas brimming with wildlife in comfort, even luxury.

When planning an Alaska cruise, you have many things to consider: when to go for the experience you're anticipating, which cruise line is best suited to your travel style, the best Alaska cruise ports to visit and which shoreside activities you want to prioritize. It's not the kind of trip you want to throw together at the last minute — especially since the best fare deals typically go to organized travelers who book early.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If you're eager to spot bald eagles in the wild, ride a dog sled atop an ice field or pan for gold after a hearty salmon feast, an Alaska cruise is calling your name. Dive into The Points Guy's Alaska cruise guide for all the planning tips you need for your dream cruise up north.

Why cruise Alaska?

Most people have similar reasons for cruising Alaska. They want to admire its rugged beauty, seek out wildlife (such as eagles, bears and whales) and learn about its Native cultures and gold rush history. It's so far from the rest of the mainland U.S. that it's become a bucket list destination, especially for travelers looking to visit each of the 50 states.

One of the key reasons to cruise Alaska versus taking a land tour is to visit destinations along the Inside Passage that you cannot reach by road. Plus, many of the state's famous glaciers are best viewed from the sea.

If you want to see landlocked areas, such as Denali National Park, you can tack a cruise line-operated tour onto the beginning or end of your sailing for a seamless land and sea vacation. It's easier than fumbling with multiple train, bus, ferry and hotel reservations to cobble together the same trip on your own.

A cruise can also make an Alaska trip more affordable. Instead of taking a long and expensive flight to Anchorage or Fairbanks, you can choose a cruise that sails round-trip from Seattle or Vancouver (note, you won't be able to tack on a post-cruise land trip to Denali if you do this). Restaurant prices in Alaska can be high, but a cruise bundles meals, accommodations and transportation into one price that, with sales, can be cheaper than you'd think.

When do cruises go to Alaska?

Nearly every major cruise line has a presence in Alaska from May through mid-September, with some offering sailings as early as April or as late as October. The season is short due to weather. Cold temperatures, icy waters and a long snowy season are not conducive to early spring and late fall cruises.

Alaska cruise weather can be chilly (in the 40s to 50s) first thing in the morning and at night. However, if it's a sunny summer day, temperatures can shoot into the 70s and even low 80s. It also rains a lot in Alaska; it's drier in the spring than in the summer.

When you want to go will depend on which activities you want to do, how you feel about cool weather and rain, and the price. Cruises at the beginning (April and May) and end (September and October) of Alaska's cruise season are generally a bit cheaper than those in June, July and August.

Where do Alaska cruises even go? Most sail along the Inside Passage, a maritime route along the state's southern coast (and into British Columbia and Washington state) that weaves around the area's thousand islands. Some venture farther north into the Gulf of Alaska; these are often one-way cruises that begin and end at the ports near Anchorage.

Learn more about the best Alaska cruise itineraries for your next vacation.

Inside Passage

The Inside Passage is the most popular Alaska cruise route. Weeklong itineraries generally embark in either Seattle or Vancouver, British Columbia — though some itineraries originate in Juneau. A few lines, such as Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Cunard Line, offer 10-night Inside Passage cruises from Seattle or Vancouver.

Glacial ice carved this passageway long ago, and today, cruise ships and fishing vessels thread their way through the islets and channels to see some of the most spectacular natural sights in the world.

You'll find magnificent mountains (often snowcapped, even in the summertime), lush forests, waterfalls, fjords and calving glaciers. If it's marine life you've come to see, you'll find it in abundance, from whales and dolphins to sea lions and harbor seals. On land, you'll likely spy bears and Dall sheep while eagles, puffins and a host of seabirds circle above.

Many people trek to Alaska to commune with nature, but there's also history here that you shouldn't overlook. Shore excursions and onboard lectures will explain the cultures of the Indigenous peoples of Alaska, as well as more recent inhabitants from the Russian community in Sitka and the fortune-seekers who moved to Skagway during the Klondike gold rush in the late 1890s.

Popular Inside Passage ports of call include Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Haines and Skagway. Most cruises will visit three or four ports of call.

Additionally, you'll have one day spent cruising the Inside Passage and one focused on "scenic cruising," where you can enjoy the landscapes but won't go ashore. This is not nearly as boring as you might think since you'll see incredible sights like Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve or Hubbard Glacier .

One nice thing about the Inside Passage is how calm the water is because you're sailing between land masses. If you worry about seasickness, an Inside Passage trip is the best Alaska cruise itinerary versus a sailing where your ship transits rougher, open waters.

Gulf of Alaska

If you book a weeklong Gulf of Alaska voyage, you'll also enjoy exploring parts of the Inside Passage and its ports that could include a mix of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka, Ketchikan, Haines and Icy Strait Point.

You'll have up to two days of scenic cruising, in addition to sailing the Inside Passage. Because Gulf of Alaska cruises sail farther north, scenic destinations might include College Fjord, in addition to Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier.

Generally, these one-way sailings travel from Seward or Whittier (the cruise ports closest to Anchorage) to Vancouver (or vice versa). Most itineraries are seven nights, but you'll find a handful that are longer.

For these itineraries, you'll need to fly into or out of Anchorage and take a train or bus to/from the cruise departure ports, which can take an hour or two. You can book the transportation on your own or through your cruise line.

Gulf of Alaska sailings — especially those in late August and September — can encounter rough seas in the gulf portion of the voyage. Be prepared if you're particularly prone to seasickness.

Longer sailings from the West Coast

Finally, you'll find some round-trip San Francisco itineraries — usually 10 or 11 nights long — as well as longer sailings between San Francisco and Vancouver. These cruises are best suited to travelers who love days at sea.

On a 10-night cruise, you'll have four sea days (for example, two days from San Francisco to Juneau) plus a day of scenic cruising at a spot like Tracy Arm (Twin Sawyer Glaciers), Endicott Arm, Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay National Park. The waters before you enter the Inside Passage can be calm, rough or anything in between, depending on when you go.

Ports on these longer sailings might include Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point and Victoria, British Columbia.

You can also find one-way repositioning cruises between Southern California ports (Los Angeles and San Diego) and Vancouver at the beginning or end of a ship's Alaska cruise season.

Cruisetours

Cruise lines understand that not all of Alaska's best sights lie along the coast. Denali National Park and the city of Fairbanks are well inland. And some coastal highlights, like the Kenai Peninsula, aren't typically visited on a seven-night cruise. So the cruise lines created their own "cruisetours": vacations that combine a weeklong cruise with a two- to seven-night bus tour.

On a cruisetour, you'll sail on a one-way Gulf of Alaska cruise, so your cruise starts or ends in Alaska. Depending on the tour itinerary you choose, you might visit Seward and the Kenai Peninsula, Alyeska, Talkeetna, Anchorage and Fairbanks — as well as spend one to three nights in Denali National Park.

Some lines also offer Alaska cruisetours that venture into Canada's Yukon, including a few Holland America tours that combine half a cruise with a cruisetour that starts or ends in Skagway.

Your tour might include a ride on the scenic Alaska Railroad . Some activities are included in the cost of the cruisetour; other outings can be booked like shore excursions, depending on your interest and budget. If you're hoping to see the northern lights, booking a cruisetour in September might be your best bet to see the aurora on a cruise vacation.

Best Alaska cruise lines

Most big-ship and luxury cruise lines send at least one cruise ship to Alaska every summer. Some of the best Alaska cruise lines are Holland America and Princess Cruises because they have especially long histories in the region and offer cruises, as well as cruise and land tour combinations, on multiple ships each season.

If you want a more active trip in less touristed areas, a great choice would be a small-ship expedition line, including Alaska specialists such as Alaskan Dream Cruises and UnCruise Adventures.

Ships in all price ranges sail a variety of itineraries, so don't let budget stop you from visiting. If luxury is what you're after, you can find lines that will go overboard pampering you on your journey north.

Best cruise lines for extended trips to Alaska

If you want to cruise Alaska but also see some of the interior and enjoy a stay in a lodge or hotel, go for a cruisetour package from either Holland America or Princess Cruises. Both have fantastic itineraries that take passengers not only to the Inside Passage, but also to Anchorage, Denali National Park, the Yukon, Kenai Peninsula, Talkeetna and Fairbanks. Princess even owns a handful of its own lodges.

Best Alaska cruises for families with kids

Carnival, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian, Princess and Royal Caribbean all have extensive kids clubs aboard their ships that cater to all ages, from babies to teens. Little kids will adore meet-and-greets with beloved characters onboard Disney cruises, or hanging with Dr. Seuss characters when sailing with Carnival. Older kids will love the rock climbing walls, video game stations, sports courts, go-karts and laser tag on Royal Caribbean and NCL ships.

Best cruise lines for adventure-seekers

Active travelers might prefer expedition-style voyages on smaller ships that include more time for adventurous activities, such as hiking in the Tongass National Forest, wildlife and glacier viewing from Zodiac rafts or kayaks, or even overnight camping. These ships often feature complimentary shore excursions, kayaks and bikes for guest use and onboard scientists and naturalists.

If you've got active teens who have an interest in nature and the environment, an expedition voyage could be exactly what will keep them engaged and off their devices. Just expect the majority of your shipmates to be older adults.

Look to UnCruise Adventures, Alaskan Dream Cruises, Hurtigruten and Lindblad Expeditions for the best adventure cruises.

Related: Pros and cons of small-ship cruising in Alaska

Best for multigenerational groups

Sailing with grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles and kids? Try Celebrity Cruises, Holland America and Princess Cruises. These cruise lines, especially on their newer ships, offer something for everyone — as well as a higher caliber of onboard dining than on the cheapest cruises.

Kids can hang out in the youth lounges while parents hit the spa or try a wine-tasting class. Everyone can come back together for dinner and evening entertainment or onboard activities suitable for all ages.

Best for couples and big celebrations

The luxury cruise lines are your best bet if you're a couple and enjoy spacious suites, gourmet food, pampering (many luxe lines hire butlers to cater to every passenger) and the opportunity to meet other like-minded cruisers. The personalized service and all-inclusive nature of luxury voyages might also be attractive to anyone celebrating a milestone, such as an anniversary, big birthday or retirement.

Look at Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn, Silversea Cruises and Viking.

Things to do in Alaska

Alaska cruises offer a wide range of activities in port, with options for active travelers, wildlife lovers, history buffs and shoppers. Whether you're traveling with young kids or require more sedentary recreation, the Alaska cruise ports won't disappoint.

Related: Best shore excursions on an Alaska cruise

Wildlife tours are available in every port. Hop a bus, kayak, boat or plane to look for bears, eagles, whales, sea otters and other wildlife. Note that moose don't regularly show up in the Inside Passage; you'll need to head farther north to find them.

Book a fishing trip to try your hand at catching salmon or halibut, or go out crab fishing for a glimpse into that type of work.

Active travelers can explore Alaska by sea kayak or canoe, hike on glaciers and through rainforests, zip line, bike, ride an ATV and even snorkel (you'll need a dry suit). You can even opt for a round of golf at the course in Haines.

In Alaska, sightseeing doesn't only take place on the ground. Floatplane and helicopter tours take you around scenic areas like Misty Fjords or land you on a glacier, perhaps for a dog-sledding or hiking adventure on the ice. If you prefer to stay grounded, you can find informative trolley tours of ports like Skagway.

Alaska cruises provide plentiful opportunities to learn about Native Alaskan culture. You can get a taste of the gold rush life by trying your hand at panning for gold, attending a salmon bake or visiting a dog-sled camp. A hike on the Chilkoot Trail or ride on the White Pass Railway lets you follow in the footsteps of the miners who came to seek their fortunes. Cap your day by trying out locally brewed craft beers.

Shopping abounds, and you can buy everything from diamond jewelry to T-shirts and other souvenirs. You'll need to look carefully for Alaskan-owned stores selling local handicrafts, but they're worth seeking out.

Best Alaska cruise ports

The best Alaska cruise ports are also the most crowded because no matter which type of itinerary and cruise line you select, you'll likely visit a mix of the same ports. The immediate port area will be filled with tourist shops and eateries. If you want to see nature at its finest, you must book a tour or venture farther afield.

If you want to see some of Alaska's most rustic and charming villages or stick to wild places, book a voyage with a line like Alaskan Dream Cruises or UnCruise to visit destinations like Baranof Island, Chichagof Island, Petersburg and Wrangell.

Ketchikan is known for three things: Native Alaskan (Tlingit) totem poles, Misty Fjords National Monument and the city's distinction as the Salmon Capital of the World. The town has more standing totem poles than anywhere else in the state; see them at the Saxman Native Village and the Totem Heritage Center. Access the Misty Fjords by kayak, floatplane or scenic cruise. Fishing excursions are plentiful here, too.

Ketchikan is where folks go to see the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, with athletes wielding axes and saws in traditional lumbering activities. It is also the jumping-off point for a Bering Sea crab fishing tour.

Alaska's capital city is interesting because no road leads from here to the rest of the state. It's located at the base of Mount Juneau, and you can only get there via boat or small plane — even residents have to bring their cars to Juneau via ferry. Home to Mendenhall Glacier, this is a popular port for hikes by, kayak tours to and helicopter landings on the glacier.

For a view of the city and cruise port, take a ride in the sky on the Mount Roberts Tramway. Various wildlife-viewing trips (whale, bears and more) and visits to dog-sled camps and salmon bakes leave from Juneau.

If you're interested in Alaska's gold rush history, Skagway — 90 miles northwest of Juneau — is a port you shouldn't miss. In fact, it's the gateway to the Klondike and Dawson mining district in Canada's Yukon territory, where prospectors searched for gold in the late 1890s. The historic district still has a Wild West feel, though that's been a bit commercialized for the modern era. This port can get crowded in summer when several ships can call on the same day.

Skagway is an easy port for independent travelers who want to explore the town or go for a hike on their own. It's most famous as the terminus for the White Pass Railway into the Yukon.

Sitka is as much a working fishing town as it is a tourist destination. Sitka's Russian heritage also sets it apart from other Alaskan ports on your cruise itinerary. See St. Michael's Orthodox Cathedral with its onion dome and the Russian Bishop's House.

Before the Russians came, the Tlingit people settled here. You can learn about their history and culture at the Sitka National Historical Park and Sheldon Jackson Museum of Native Alaskan art. Wildlife enthusiasts might want to visit the Alaska Raptor Center, or go bird- and bear-watching.

The population of Haines remains less than 2,000, according to the United States Census Bureau, and it isn't yet as touristy as some of the other Alaskan ports, such as nearby Skagway. It's known for great fishing (salmon, halibut and trout) and an eagle preserve — because eagles know where the best fish can be found.

Animal lovers and kids tend to enjoy a visit to the Kroschel Center for Orphaned Animals here. For a special tour, go bear-watching at twilight.

Icy Strait Point

Icy Strait Point is notable among Alaska cruise ports because the area and its attractions are all Native Alaskan-owned. Most port and tour staff hail from Hoonah, Alaska's largest Tlingit village. The port is set on Chichagof Island, which is known for its large bear population. Wildlife lovers have plenty of opportunities to search for whales and eagles here; adventure-seekers won't want to miss the ZipRider, with its course of six zip lines.

Scenic cruising

Most Alaska itineraries include some "scenic cruising," where your ship sails past incredible natural sights. You'll rarely leave the ship during these sail-bys (unless you happen to be aboard certain expedition, luxury or small ships that offer the chance to get on board a skiff to get closer ... but, even then, you're still viewing these sites from the water).

Onboard naturalists generally narrate what you're seeing, so head to the observation lounge (or tune to a broadcast on your in-room television) to learn about some of the top sights featured on scenic cruising days.

Top scenic cruising destinations in Alaska include Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve , Hubbard Glacier, Tracy Arm (Twin Sawyer Glaciers), Dawes Glacier at Endicott Arm and College Fjord.

When to book an Alaska cruise

The best time to book an Alaska cruise is when a cruise line first opens bookings on that sailing, often more than a year in advance. You'll have your pick of itineraries and cabins — balcony cabins are popular in this scenic destination — and often the best fares.

Because Alaska has such a short season with a limited number of ships and is a dream trip for many, cruises are in high demand and people plan early.

If you wait to book, you're not entirely out of luck. Cruise lines often run sales in the fall or in the early months of the year (a period known in the cruise industry as " wave season "). You can take advantage of discounted fares, free upgrades or complimentary add-ons, such as Wi-Fi, gratuities, restaurant meals, beverage packages and tours. Some of the most desirable cabins might be sold out; being flexible about your sail date or itinerary can help.

In general, waiting until the last minute is not the best idea, unless you live in Seattle or Vancouver and don't need to book flights. While some less preferred sail dates or cabin categories might be available a few months out, spurring cruise lines to drop rates, you might have trouble finding affordable airfare and pre- or post-cruise hotel accommodations that do not consume your cruise savings.

What to bring on an Alaska cruise

When it comes to packing for an Alaska cruise, your mantra should always be: dress in layers. On the same day, you might be warm in town but chilly on your tour to a glacier. If you plan on hiking, kayaking or riding on a dog sled, you'll need the appropriate activewear.

Definitely pack for rain; consider skipping the umbrella and instead bringing a wide-brimmed waterproof hat, rain jacket, rain pants and waterproof shoes or boots.

This is also the trip for a camera with good telephoto lenses and binoculars. For more on what to bring on an Alaska cruise, check out our Alaska cruise packing list .

Bottom line

An Alaska cruise is a memorable experience. The beauty of the land and its immense history; the thrill of seeing bears, moose and bald eagles; and the mysteries of the surrounding marine life will astound you. It's a trip worth taking the time to plan and doing right — because who knows if or when you'll make it back to the Last Frontier.

Safety measures and greater peace of mind

The wellbeing and safety of our passengers and staff is always a priority, especially as we adjust to a new world for travellers. My Travel Experience is committed to ensuring your peace of mind with customer-friendly booking practices and enhanced health and safety standards on our trips.

We work closely with tour operators that have received the Safe Travels stamp by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), which enables travellers to recognise companies around the world that have adopted health and hygiene global standardised protocols.

Safe travel requirements: International regulations are constantly changing as the COVID-19 pandemic evolves. Travellers need to be prepared to take a COVID-19 test at a designated time and be able to provide proof of their fully vaccinated status.

Local authorities and airlines or cruise companies may have additional requirements in place for departures. We recommend you check these in advance and again before arriving at the airport. If you're transiting through other destinations during your trip, check on any local requirements at each transit destination and confirm any specific requirements for onward travel with your airline.

Only get tested through verified official testing centres. Scammers are taking advantage of travellers by charging for fake tests. If you're unsure where to get tested, contact the local health authority for advice.

You'll still need to provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 PCR test result even if you've been vaccinated. If you've had a COVID-19 vaccine, you should carry your vaccination certificate along with your negative PCR test results while travelling from/to Australia, especially if you have one or more transit stops. Some destinations may ask for proof of testing and vaccination before allowing you to transit through or cross their border.

These guidelines are subject to change as the global situation evolves. The enforcement of certain measures (i.e. covid testing, social distancing, mask-wearing etc.) will vary in different regions. It's your responsibility to check with local health authorities for requirements in their region and ensure you are eligible to travel.
