Full Edmunds Review: 2014 INFINITI Q60 Coupe Q60 Coupe

Aside from the new name, the 2014 Infiniti Q60 coupe (formerly the G37 coupe) returns unchanged.

Edmunds says

The 2014 Infiniti Q60 offers plenty of performance. But compared with rival luxury sport coupes, refinement and practicality are lacking.

Vehicle overview

The 2014 Infiniti Q60 coupe is a new name for what Infiniti previously called its G37 coupe. The name change is pretty much just that, as this year's car is isn't really any different from how it was before. This means it's an appealing upscale sport coupe that offers a nice blend of performance and luxury, although practicality suffers somewhat in the process.

Though the wisdom of its name change may be debatable, there's no denying the strengths that have led us to praise this luxury sport coupe in years past. On the performance side of the ledger, there's the powerful 330-horsepower V6 engine and sharp handling it inherited from the Nissan 370Z on which the 2014 Q60 coupe is based. Add the flowing lines and muscular haunches of the Q60's styling and an interior wrapped in top-quality materials and filled with the latest high-tech features, and you have a car that delivers a very agreeable balance between athletic moves on winding country roads and head-turning style and sophistication around town.

Buyers looking to kick performance up a notch can step up to the performance-oriented Q60 IPL (Infiniti Performance Line). Upgrades here include a more powerful version of the 3.7-liter V6, firmer suspension calibrations, revised steering and beefier brakes. The IPL also features some distinctive exterior enhancements, including 19-inch alloy wheels with performance tires and aerodynamic bodywork. Even with all of these go-faster upgrades, though, the IPL coupe didn't actually go any faster in our testing, and it has a much stiffer ride to boot.

The regular-strength Q60 coupe is much easier to recommend, but it's not without a few shortcomings of its own. From a practical standpoint, the Q60's rear seat and trunk are small, even by the standards of this class. And while the Q60's V6 engine offers robust acceleration, it can often sound and feel harsh when pushed toward its upper rpm limits. With this in mind, buyers considering the 2014 Infiniti Q60 coupe might also want to look at some of its competitors. The new 2014 BMW 4 Series should be your first stop; it offers comparable driving dynamics and a much roomier rear seat. The 2014 Audi A5 and 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class also have a slight edge in interior refinement. But overall, the 2014 Infiniti Q60 coupe remains a solid choice, especially if performance is a priority.

2014 INFINITI Q60 Coupe models

The four-seat 2014 Infiniti Q60 coupe is offered in four trim levels: the Q60 Journey, the Q60 AWD ("base"), the Q60S 6MT and the Q60 IPL. Infiniti also offers a Q60 convertible, which is reviewed separately.

Standard features on the well-equipped Journey model include 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic xenon headlights, foglights, heated mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated eight-way power front seats, a folding rear seat, cruise control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel (with an accompanying tilting gauge cluster), a 7-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth phone connectivity, a rearview camera and a six-speaker audio system with a six-CD changer, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio input jack and an iPod/USB audio interface. The Q60 AWD gets all of the above plus an all-wheel-drive system.

Most options are grouped into packages, and each package requires you to select one or more of the preceding option packages to get the next one on the list. For example, everything starts with the Premium package, which bundles a sunroof, rear parking sensors, driver memory settings, power driver-seat lumbar, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and an 11-speaker Bose audio system . To that you can add the Navigation package, which includes a navigation system, Bluetooth audio connectivity and voice controls.

Once you've checked the boxes for those two packages, you can spring for the Sport package, which gets you 19-inch wheels, summer performance tires, sport-tuned suspension and steering, upgraded brakes, a limited-slip differential, unique styling, paddle shifters (for automatics) and front sport seats with adjustable bolsters and thigh support.

Only after you've added all of the above will you be allowed to add the available Technology package, which consists of adaptive cruise control, a pre-collision seatbelt preparation system, automatic wipers and an advanced climate control system with an air purifier.

The Q60S 6MT model includes everything in the Premium, Navigation and Sport packages, along with a standard manual transmission. The sunroof and the Technology package are not available on this model. Opting for the Q60 IPL trim boosts the coupe's performance credentials with more engine power, a sport-tuned exhaust, more aggressive suspension tuning, aerodynamic enhancements and unique badging.

Performance & mpg

Power for the 2014 Infiniti Q60 comes from a 3.7-liter V6 engine that produces 330 hp and 270 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard. The Q60S 6MT swaps the automatic for a six-speed manual transmission, and the Q60 AWD retains the automatic and adds an all-wheel-drive system.

In Edmunds performance testing, a Q60S 6MT coupe went from zero to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds: a very respectable performance for this class, though some competitors are quicker. EPA estimated fuel economy with rear-wheel drive and the automatic transmission is 22 mpg combined (19 mpg city/27 mpg highway). The Q60 AWD drops a bit, to 20 mpg combined (18 mpg city/25 mpg highway), and the Q60 Sport with the manual transmission is also rated at 20 mpg combined (17 mpg city/25 mpg highway).

The Q60 IPL coupe gets a more powerful version of the same engine that puts out 348 hp and 276 lb-ft of torque. It's offered with either the six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic. Despite the IPL's horsepower bump, the manual-shift coupe posted an identical 5.7-second 0-60-mph time in our testing.

Standard safety features for the Q60 coupe include antilock disc brakes with brake assist, stability control, traction control, front seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. A rearview camera is standard, and rear parking sensors are standard or optional, depending on the trim level. The optional Technology package includes impending frontal collision preparation (pre-crash seatbelt tensioning and brake priming).

In Edmunds brake testing, a Q60S came to a stop from 60 mph in 110 feet, a good number that's fairly typical for cars in this segment fitted with summer tires.

Step on the gas and the 2014 Infiniti Q60 coupe's V6 delivers pulse-quickening performance, though the engine can sound coarse as revs approach the redline. The seven-speed automatic transmission helps make the most of that power with quick shifts via the steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles. Downshifts are quite smooth thanks to rev-matching functionality, but upshifts can sometimes be a tad harsh. All the same, though, it's a better choice than the available six-speed manual, which has a rather stiff clutch pedal that can engage abruptly until you've acclimated to it.

Around turns, the Q60 coupe is impressively balanced and offers plenty of grip. The steering can feel unnecessarily heavy, though, especially with the quicker ratio that comes as part of the Sport option package (standard on the Q60S). The Q60's ride quality is pretty smooth, though, even on substandard pavement.

Ultimately, there's little gained by choosing the Q60 IPL model. Its acceleration and handling aren't measurably better than other Infiniti Q60s, and the ride quality noticeably suffers because of the stiffer suspension tuning.

The 2014 Infiniti Q60 coupe's interior is a near-ideal blend of form and function. The design is stylish without being overly fussy, and the leather upholstery and optional wood trim give the space an upscale vibe. Standard climate and audio controls operate intuitively, as does the available navigation system. The iPod integration and the optional Bose audio system are among the best we've tried.

Up front, the standard seats offer good comfort and support. The available sport seats feature more substantial side bolsters designed to keep your backside planted during aggressive driving, but they may be a bit of a tight fit for larger individuals. You're not going to want to put an adult in either of the rear seats, though they provide a handy spot to stash large purses and laptop bags.

The Q60's trunk offers a mere 7.4 cubic feet of cargo room, a number that falls considerably short of several competitors. Folding down the rear seatbacks helps some, as it opens up enough space to squeeze in longer items.

2014 Infiniti Q60 review: Drive like it's 2007 in the Q60

Infiniti must have thought the only thing wrong with its sport coupe was the name, as the old G37 coupe becomes the Q60, with virtually no changes to the tech.

2014 infiniti q60 journey

With its G- and M-series cars, Infiniti mixed performance with high-tech luxury, but then rested on its laurels for a good five years. I waited for the next innovative model update, but all Infiniti offered was rebranding, changing the model names of its entire lineup.

2014 infiniti q60 journey

2014 Infiniti Q60

The bottom line.

So the G37 coupe becomes the 2014 Infiniti Q60, and the old G37 sedan now sports a Q50 badge.

From my desk, it was a disappointing update. But when I got behind the wheel of the Q60, I was instantly reminded how good the old G37 coupe was. Besides the model name, there isn't much new in the Q60. It features the same 3.7-liter V-6 engine, seven-speed automatic transmission, and dashboard infotainment system.

Fortunately, this car has aged well. In coupe form particularly, it looks good. The front fenders show a styling language that Infiniti refined for over 10 years. And it's more than just removing the rear doors from the sedan version; the coupe's roofline drops back sharply toward the rear. That design might mean less headroom for rear-seat passengers, of which only two can fit, but who needs that extra weight in a sports coupe anyway? You aren't a taxi service for friends and family.

2014 Infiniti Q60: Same as it ever was (pictures)

2014 infiniti q60 journey

The Q60 isn't a very practical car. The oddly shallow trunk only holds 7.4 cubic feet of cargo.

But it is a particularly satisfying sports car. The model I tested was in Journey trim, meaning it could only be had with an automatic transmission. It included all the packages: Premium, Navigation, Sport, and Technology, raising the price about $10,000 from its base $40,400. Infiniti also offers a Q60S model with a six-speed manual transmission.

Ready to rumble Gripping the Q60's steering wheel, I was pleased to see long paddle shifters attached to the steering column. Unlike steering-wheel mounts, column-mounted paddles maintain their position no matter how much you're turning. The power-adjusted seats were well-bolstered and very comfortable, befitting the Q60's premium segment, but I wasn't crazy about the high-gloss wood trim in the cabin. It's a car, not a bureau.

The engine sounded ready to rumble from my first stab at the start button. This 3.7-liter mill carries over from the previous G37 models, and builds on the 3.5-liter V-6 Nissan put into play back in 2001. The variable valve lift and event programming serves to adjust fuel delivery for different engine speeds, resulting in an impressive 330 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque.

2014 Infiniti Q60

Infiniti's 3.7-liter V-6, the VQ37VHR, is a bit long in the tooth but still has plenty of bite.

This same engine sees use in the Nissan 370Z .

This V-6 earned awards and praise for its linear power delivery, and those qualities remain in the Q60. Unlike lower-displacement turbocharged engines, popular among other automakers for improved fuel economy, the Q60's V-6 put power to the rear wheels as soon as I hit the gas. I could easily modulate that power delivery by feathering the pedal, making it easy to drive in heavy traffic.

Given changes among the competition, the Q60 feels like an old-school muscle car in the sport-luxury segment.

When I got into the power, the exhaust note sounded off with a growl to warm the heart of any gearhead. More than that, from my grip on the steering wheel, the Q60 felt taut, like a puma ready to pounce. The power steering is one of the diminishing numbers of hydraulic rigs you'll find among new models. I appreciate the precision of high-tech electric power steering, just now coming into vogue in so many other models, but steering the Q60 felt like going back to basics, reinforcing the car's old-school feel.

Set up for sport This car's Sport package, for a very reasonable $1,950, brought in 19-inch alloy wheels, a limited-slip differential, and a tighter suspension. That last feature added to very enjoyable handling when I was bombing down a twisty road, but also some back-wrenching bumps when using the car for mere transportation.

2014 Infiniti Q60

As a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive car, the Q60 maintains classic sport-luxury architecture.

Infiniti doesn't offer any sort of adaptive suspension on the Q60, so the factory tuning is what you're stuck with. On smooth pavement, the ride is fine, but a lot of miles over bad roads can be torturous. If you're not an adrenaline junkie, forgo the Sport package in favor of a more comfortable ride.

As impressively as the engine, steering, and suspension come together when flogging the Q60, the automatic transmission is the weak link. I threw the shifter into the Sport position and there was no immediate change in the car's response. But once I got onto the power -- flooring it for the straights and braking hard at the turns -- the Sport program engaged, holding the engine speed in its power band.

The real disappointment came when I hit the paddles to engage manual shifting. This seven-speed automatic showed typical torque converter lag, with a little hesitation before each shift. To make this Q60 really competitive, Infiniti needs to either go to a dual-clutch automated manual or look at the sorts of quick-shifting automatic transmissions that companies like Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar are using.

2014 Infiniti Q60

Long, column-mounted paddle shifters behind the steering wheel don't make up for the transmission's slow manual shifts.

In city and highway cruising, the paddles didn't come into play, and the transmission shifted through its seven gears smoothly. Partly because of the responsive engine, the car was never caught flat-footed when I need a quick boost for a merge. The cabin appointments added to the comfort of this sort of driving, although the ride quality made me suffer when the pavement turned rough.

Even though Infiniti hasn't shown much recent innovation in the drivetrain, the Q60 still boasts fuel economy of 27 mpg on the highway. However, it drops down to 19 mpg in the city. I saw low 20s for my time in the car, ending with a real-world average of 21.4 mpg.

One tech area Infiniti has pushed in the past is driver assistance systems, including surround-view cameras and self-stopping in traffic. The Q60 doesn't benefit from Infiniti's entire arsenal, but this model came with an adaptive cruise control system and a reasonably advanced rearview camera showing trajectory guidance.

Adaptive cruise let me set my speed and following distance, after which the car automatically slowed down and matched the speed of traffic ahead. I tried it out in heavy traffic, and it performed well. However, the closest following distance it would allow still left a couple of car lengths ahead, inviting other cars to slip in.

2014 Infiniti Q60

With only two doors and a roofline that drops quickly and gracefully to the rear, the Q60 is a true coupe.

The Q60 will have to wait until Infiniti gives it electric power-steering boost before it can get features such as self-steering in traffic or automatic parallel parking.

Faded but functional Driving over the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, a glance at the navigation system showed the car plowing through blue water. At first I thought it had lost its GPS lock and was prepared to note that down as a fault, then realized I was on the recently completed new bridge span, off to the side of the original bridge.

The GPS lock was fine, but the navigation system's maps weren't up-to-date.

To be fair, that's not an uncommon problem with in-vehicle navigation systems, which commonly used stored maps. The Q60 has its maps stored on a hard drive, which, on the positive side, leads to good response times. The maps render quickly and show perspective and plan views.

2014 Infiniti Q60

The interface for Infiniti's cabin tech works very well, although the system is dated.

I particularly like Infiniti's cabin tech interface for the Q60, which combines a dial and buttons with a touch screen. Although those two entry methods are duplicative, I find that the touch screen works well for some things, and the dial for others.

The Q60 also features voice command, but this older system has limited capabilities. It let me make calls by saying the name of contacts on my paired phone, but it didn't offer much control over the stereo. Entering addresses required me to say each piece of a street address at separate voice prompts, which is very tedious.

The Q60's navigation system also lacks any online search capabilities, another indicator of its age.

The car's standard hands-free phone system offers the usual features, such as integrating a paired phone's contact list and making those names available on the screen. It also has an onscreen dial pad, for people who actually still memorize phone numbers.

2014 Infiniti Q60

The stereo shows a full music library interface for both old and newer iOS devices.

I could also stream music through the stereo from my Bluetooth-paired phone, although I had to take a minor extra step indicating to the system that my phone should be included as a streaming source. Other audio sources included satellite radio and anything I could plug into the car's USB port.

An 11-speaker Bose audio system, part of the Premium package included on this model, delivered impressive sound. I've heard some mediocre Bose systems in the past, but this one, which Infiniti calls Studio on Wheels, proved very enjoyable. It did a fantastic job of producing bass, making percussive notes that pounded out through the cabin air. Treble notes were also very good, just not quite on the same level.

Tested over time The G37 was an excellent car when it came out five years ago, but technology has advanced since that time, and looking at the 2014 Infiniti Q60 through that lens, it remains competent, but not quite the star it once was. The power output from the engine is very good, as is its response. The transmission tech isn't quite up to the Q60's sporting ambitions.

More telling is the fixed suspension, which could definitely benefit from adaptive technology with modes for comfort and sport.

Infotainment systems tend to suffer the most with age, but this one mostly shows its venerability through a lack of newer, connected features. It may not do everything that competitive systems do, but it performs well for what it does. For example, the navigation system is still very functional, although the maps could use updating.

Bluetooth and the USB port still work excellently well as audio sources, and probably won't become obsolete for a long time. The Bose audio system, as with any good stereo, also stands the test of time, as good sound quality does not diminish.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

2014 infiniti q60 journey

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

2014 infiniti q60 journey

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

2014 infiniti q60 journey

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

2014 infiniti q60 journey

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

2014 infiniti q60 journey

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

2014 infiniti q60 journey

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
