Additionally, we can adjust it to suit preferences and taste, even by adding internal flight. With us, explore Kenya!

The incredible 9 Days Kenya Safari is an eight-night, nine-day safari in Kenya that gives you the chance to discover the country's vibrant culture, breathtaking scenery, and traditional wildlife safari hotspots, including the Masai Mara, Samburu, and Lake Nakuru National Park.

You will stop for a hemispheres demonstration at the equator line in Nanyuki while traveling. Proceed and reach Samburu Ashnil Tented Camp in time for lunch and check-in. Take a shower and eat a hot lunch. After a brief period of rest, you will leave for an afternoon game drive at around 4 o'clock.

The Samburu's Special Five , also known as rare northern species, are the principal attractions of this reserve. They are Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, and Beisa oryx. In addition to the Samburu's Special Five, the Reserve is also home to all three big cats—the lion, cheetah, and African leopard—as well as a large number of elephants. You will return to the camp to freshen up after your game drive before going to a freshly prepared hot meal. Have an overnight stay in the camp later.

Meal Plan: Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Ashnil Samburu Camp

The program is very flexible today, and you can choose between two options: Option one: Go on a morning game drive, come back for a hearty breakfast, get ready, and then spend the rest of the morning at leisure, perhaps swimming in the pool or just unwinding. After eating lunch, go on your evening game drive. Lastly, head back to the camp for dinner and to spend the night. Option two: You could eat breakfast early and then go on a full-day game drive with a packed lunch. After dinner, head back to the lodge to retire for the evening.

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

You will leave for an afternoon game drive at around 4 o'clock after having some downtime. Since the camp is located inside the park, the game drive begins at the gate. The conservancy is praised for housing the only two endangered northern white rhinos left in the world, for housing the only chimpanzee sanctuary of its sort in Kenya, for being the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, and for being home to the "Big Five" (elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, and leopard), You will return to the camp by vehicle following the game drive. After getting dressed, you'll go to a warm meal with relaxing traditional music.

Accommodation: Sweetwaters Serena Camp

After a nice breakfast, you'll go on a morning game drive today. Once you get back to camp around midday, you may enjoy the remainder of the morning at your leisure by swimming in the pool or simply lounging around and watching animals come to the water hole to drink. After lunch, go on a game drive in the evening while visiting Sweetwater's Chimpanzee Sanctuary to see chimpanzees and the last two northern white rhinos still living in the world. Lastly, get back to the camp for supper and to spend the night.

You'll leave the camp for Lake Nakuru National Park after breakfast. At Nyahururu, you'll have a brief stay when you might get to visit the 74-meter Thomson's fall. This place has a nice seaside wind. As you snap pictures, you'll become more at ease. After that, continue on your journey and reach Lake Nakuru in time for lunch. Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge check-in. prepare yourself for a hot lunch and then leave.

You will leave for an afternoon game drive at 4 o'clock after having some downtime. Since the resort is inside the park, the game drive begins at the gate. Numerous black and white rhinos, hundreds of flamingos, occasionally even millions, and critically endangered Rothschild's giraffes can all be found in this park. Additionally, it offers the best views and chances to observe Makalia Waterfall. Following your game drive, you'll return to the lodge to change before going to a freshly prepared hot dinner. Have an overnight stay at the lodge later.

Accommodation: Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge

You will leave the camp for a morning wildlife drive following breakfast. The Masai Mara, one of Africa's largest animal reserves, will be your destination later on. In time for lunch, you'll reach Masai Mara National Reserve. Arrive at Mara Serena Lodge and get ready. After a nice lunch, take some time to relax.

Go on a game drive in the afternoon at around 4 o'clock. Every safari in Kenya includes a high point at the Masai Mara. It is well-known throughout the world for its exceptional population of lions, leopards, and cheetahs as well as the annual migration of zebra, Thomson's gazelle, and wildebeest to and from the Serengeti, also referred to as the great wildebeest migration or the 7th Wonder of the World, which takes place from July to October. We will return to the lodge to clean up and eat dinner after the wildlife drive. Spend the night at the lodge.

Accommodation: Mara Serena Safari Lodge

You will leave the camp after breakfast and go on a full-day game drive in search of the "Big 5" and other wildlife, carrying a packed lunch with you. If your safari takes place between July and October, you will have the opportunity to see the annual wildebeest migration, which is considered to be the seventh wonder of the world, especially as they traverse the crocodile-infested River Mara. Later, you'll come back for supper and to stay the night.

The program of today offers three possibilities, which makes it incredibly versatile.

Option 1: After breakfast, leave the lodge and go on a full-day game drive in the Mara Reserve in search of the Big 5 and other wildlife.

Option 2: Go for an early-morning game drive in search of the big cat and the murders, then come back for breakfast, get changed, and spend the rest of the morning as you like, whether it be swimming in the pool or simply unwinding. After lunch, set out for a game drive in the evening about 4 PM to look for the Big Five and other species.

In the early morning, you can opt for an optional hot air balloon ride (USD 400 per person). You will be transported to the balloon launch site after being picked up from your hotel. It takes around an hour to complete. After lunch, proceed back to the accommodation via a Masai village. Go on a game drive in the afternoon around 4 PM. After that, you'll eat dinner and spend the night at the lodge.

You will go on a morning game drive to leave the park and return to Nairobi after breakfast. You will have an optional layover for a boat excursion in Lake Naivasha followed by a walking safari in the animal sanctuary, depending on the timing of your departure back home. Continually checking your flight itinerary, you will travel on to Nairobi where you will spend the day engaging in optional activities like Visit the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, the Giraffe Center, visit the Maasai Market or have lunch or dinner at the renowned Carnivore Restaurant, among other optional things to do in Nairobi.

Accommodation: Sanctuary Olonana camp (Luxury)/ Sarova Mara Camp (Midrange)

After an early breakfast, with the help of your guide, you will depart for a full-day game drive and explore Masai Mara in search of the wild animals found here. You will also visit the river to witness the great wildebeest migration as they cross the river.

The Wildebeest are not the only tenants of the land. The Mara is also home to other animals namely; zebra, elephants, and giraffes, and to the big cats; cheetahs, lions, and leopards. Hyena, jackal, buffalo, eland, topi, impala, gazelle, and warthog add to this huge diversity of wildlife. After the game drives, you will be driven back to the lodge for relaxation, dinner, and an overnight stay.

After breakfast, you will check out of the lodge with the help of your guide. He will then transfer you to Lake Nakuru where you will have the afternoon at leisure.

Accommodation: Lake Nakuru Sopa lodge (Luxury)/ Lake Nakuru lodge (Midrange)

After breakfast, you will depart to the park for the game drive. Lake Nakuru is a tinny park with eye-catching rare white rhinos that form part of the Big Five animals. During the game drive, there are high chances of seeing the pink flamingos. The game drive at Lake Nakuru lasts between 3-4 hours. After the game drive, you will return to the lodge for lunch and have the entire afternoon at leisure.

After breakfast, you will exit Lake Nakuru for Lake Naivasha with a game drive. You will have a brief stopover at the viewpoint of the Great Rift Valley and take a few photos and videos as part of the memories to be taken back home. Upon arrival at Mount Longonot, you will check in at the lodge and then proceed for hiking. We highly advise the hikers to carry hiking boots to be comfortable during the hike as the terrain can be steep and slippery. The hiking starts from the park gate to the top of the mountain at the crater rim which will take two hours therefore the round trip will be approximately 4 hours. From the top of the mountain, you will be able to see the scenic view of Lake Naivasha. On the way, you will have a glimpse of the antelopes, and zebras, and at a long-range, you will be able to see buffaloes. You will have lunch and then return to the lodge.

Kenya can offer many incredible experiences to those willing to delve deep, but as a country slightly less travelled it can sometimes be a little intimidating trying to decide how to spend your time here.

Through my own experiences in Kenya exploring the must-see places (as well as the places you don’t need to see), I have crafted for you the ultimate 9-day itinerary for getting the most out of this truly incredible country.

Table of Contents

Day 1: nairobi – the capital, day 2: masai mara – safari, day 3: masai mara – safari, day 4: masai mara – safari, day 5: naivasha – lake animals, day 6: mombasa – historic kenya, day 7: mombasa – historic kenya, day 8: diani beach – beach and activities, day 9: diani beach – beach and activities, useful tips for travelling in kenya, final thoughts.

There are many different options for exploring the wonders of Kenya, you can travel via public transport, rent a car or hire a personal driver for your trip. This makes the epic journey detailed below one that can be enjoyed by those with all budgets and comfort levels. I recommend renting a car or sorting a tour driver for the first 5 days of the trip and then using public transport for the rest due to accessibility.

As the capital of the country and the largest international airport, it makes sense that you would start your incredible adventure in this bustling city, ripe with a large collection of cultures, foods and sights to see.

What to do and see in Nairobi?

Start your day at the Giraffe Centre, an ethical conservation centre designed to help the endangered Rothschild Giraffe. Here you can get up close and personal with wild giraffes, whilst sending your money towards a great cause.

After an hour or so of making friends with the giraffes, it’s now time for the elephants! Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage is another ethical non-profit organisation helping young elephants which have lost their parents, often to poachers.

After a long morning experiencing animals, time to head into the city and enjoy the local culture. Head to the Masai Market in the centre of the city to experience local handmade wares of bright colours and excellent craft. From here you can take a short 20-minute stroll through the centre of the city, destination KICC.

The Kenyan International Conference Centre is a tall building with a rooftop viewing platform accessible for only 3-4USD and provides excellent views of the city and surrounding plains. Make sure to bring a photo ID to gain entry!

Where to eat in Nairobi?

The Carnivore Restaurant – For meat lovers wanting to experience local cuisine.

K’Osewe Ranalo Foods – Best for lunch before visiting the market.

About Thyme – Beautiful restaurant with a pretty garden and many vegetarian options.

Where to stay in Nairobi?

  • $$$ – Fairmont The Norfolk
  • $$ – Fairview Nairobi
  • $ – Khweza Bed & Breakfast

Travel time: 45 minutes flying, 5 hours driving or 7 hours on the matatu/bus (changing at Narok).

Today will mostly be travelling, settling into your accommodation and exploring the local area and culture. I recommend booking your adventure before making the trip, as most Safari companies will arrange transport for you from Nairobi.

For the more adventurous, rent a car and road trip, stopping at many of the incredible viewpoints along the way!

What to do and see in Masai Mara?

After settling into your accommodation and grabbing some food, explore the area you are in and head to one of the Maasai villages to experience the way of life of the local Maasai tribe. There are many opportunities to learn the cultural practices and traditions of the tribe. Get an early night, as tomorrow will be a big day.

Where to eat in Masai Mara?

As a rural area, there are not many restaurants around, but food options will be provided by your accommodation.

Where to stay in Masai Mara?

Although I recommend booking your safari tour and accommodation all in one package, here are some independent options if you want to go it alone.

  • $$$ – Mara Chui Eco-Resort
  • $$ – Mara Frontier Hotel
  • $ – Maasai Homestay Camping

It’s now time to safari it up and find some of the animals that make this area famous!

Explore the incredible scenery of the Mara and try to spot as many of the big 5 animals as you can! If you are there between July and September then make sure to watch out for the great migration, more information on that can be found in the Masai Mara section of our best options for Safari in 2023 .

Try to finish your safari by early afternoon so you can grab some food and have a nap, as tonight is the best day to head out on a night safari! Here you will have a better chance of seeing the elusive leopard!

You can safari by guided drive (recommended), hot-air balloon or your own car.

After a relaxing lie-in to recover from your night safari, head out into the mara again to keep exploring this incredible area!

Head out onto another full-day safari to increase your chance of seeing all of the big five! Your tour operator will know which areas you have already explored and which animals you have seen so will take you to some new spots today.

Travel time: Around 4 hours if you self-drive. Add an hour for public transport, you will have to change at Narok again. If you booked your safari and transport together then you can ask them to drop you in Naivasha.

Sitting on the beautiful lake of the same name, this area is a tranquil stopover between Mara and Nairobi.

What to do and see in Naivasha?

Now you’ve seen the incredible land mammals of the African plains, it’s time to head to the water. You can take a boat cruise (more budget-friendly than it sounds) over the lake to get up close to the hippos and crocodiles that reside in the area. After this, explore the cute town that lines the lake, there are many matatus that conveniently run up and down for hard-to-walk places.

Where to eat in Naivasha?

Ranch House Bistro

Geothermal Club Canteen

Gabby’s Cake House & Cafe

Where to stay in Naivasha?

  • $$$ – Lake Naivasha Resort
  • $$ – The Vasha Elegant
  • $ – Stara Lodge

Travel time: Around 2 hours from Naivasha to Nairobi and then a 1-hour flight to Mombassa. Internal flights are reasonably inexpensive.

Take a morning stroll along the lake shore before heading back to Nairobi. You can easily get there via public transport, or use this as an opportunity to return your rental car before heading to Mombasa.

What to do and see in Mombasa?

You will probably be arriving here in the afternoon so take a stroll around the old town of Mombasa to get a feel of the area. As you walk, head for the waterfront and look out for the beautiful street art dotted around the town.

Where to eat in Mombasa?

Tamarind Restaurant and Dow Yul’s Aquadrom Tarboush Cafe

Where to stay in Mombasa?

  • $$$ – Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa
  • $$ – CityBlue Creekside Hotel and Suites
  • $ – Akogo House (an extremely affordable hostel dedicated to raising funds for street children in the city)

Now it’s time to really deep-dive into the incredible historic town! Mombasa is the country’s oldest city and is still the most active port. As it was the capital until 1906, there is lots to explore in Kenya’s second-largest city.

Today you will be walking a lot and learning about the history of Mombasa. Wander around the old harbour, the oldest part of the city and you will notice a strong Arab influence in the area. As you walk through this area, you will notice the buildings transform into a more Portuguese style from the 1500s. A great example of this is Fort Jesus, a must-see in Mombasa.

After visiting the fort, wander through Treasury Square and towards the many religious buildings of the area, such as the Mombasa Memorial Cathedral, Swaminarayan Temple and Jain Temple, all incredible sights in themselves.

Whilst in the old town, head to the local Market Hall for some food and to smell the sensory wonder that is Kenyan Spices. Here you can also grab a refreshing coconut, expertly sliced open by the vendors.

If you need to take a break from the heat, then hit up Makadara Gardens, a beautiful park in the centre of town where you can experience the rare plants that grow in the area and take shade under a tree.

Travel time: Around 1 hour. Take the free ferry from Mombasa to Likoni and then a matatu to Diani Beach. You can also take a bus the entire way, but these are difficult to find and you will need to exit the bus on the ferry.

Now you’ve seen the animals, you’ve experienced the history, but there’s one major attraction of Kenya that some people wrongly miss off their Kenyan Itinerary…the incredible beaches!

What to do and see in Diani Beach?

The never-ending stretch of soft, white-sand beach is really something to behold! Couple this with a cute town and crystal clear waters with thriving reefs, and you have a holiday destination in which you could easily spend the whole 9 days!

Take a morning stroll around the town of Diani Beach and experience the cute stores and cafes before heading down to the beautiful white sand beaches to relax and unwind, thinking about all of the fantastic things you have done so far!

Where to eat in Diani Beach?

Africana Seafood Restaurant – The freshest and most personalised eating experience! There is no menu, you simply order what you want (with their suggestions) and they go straight to the fisherman/market to get the ingredients fresh! It’s best to order here around 1.5 hours before wanting to eat but it’s a great way to try lobster or octopus for cheap!

Nomad Beach Bar & Restaurant

Sails Beach Bar & Restaurant

Where to stay in Diani Beach?

  • $$$ -Amani Luxury Apartments
  • $$ – Sheba Cottages – Diani Beach
  • $ – Diani Backpackers (One of the best hostels I’ve personally stayed in around the world)

More beach time, or if you don’t fancy just lounging around, try out one of the many activities in the area listed below.

This is the last day of your trip, this afternoon you will be heading back to Mombasa where you can catch a flight wherever you need to go, but first, why not take a snorkelling or diving trip to experience Kenya’s tropical reefs? The crystal clear waters and busy reefs offer a unique tropical experience, enjoying incredibly beautiful fish in a variety of colours.

You can also surf, kite surf or take a glass bottom boat tour. If these aren’t your thing, then why not lie on the beach and have a massage under the sweet sun?

The best time to visit Kenya:

July – September is the dry season and is when the great migration takes place, otherwise January – March is also a good time.

What is the currency of Kenya?

Kenyan Shilling. 1 USD = 119.84 KES (At the time of writing).

Can you drink tap water in Kenya?

The tap water is inconsistent so it is recommended to drink bottled or filtered water.

The language of Kenya:

Swahili and English.

Is Kenya safe?

Kenya can be a safe place to travel if you are aware of the risks. Don’t walk around alone after dark, and ask at your hotel about which areas to avoid totally. Another non-physical risk is scams, many people pose as tour guides or even police officers in order to get money from tourists. These scams are easy to spot when you know what to look for and so I recommend doing some research before heading out.

Kenya is an incredibly diverse country with some of the most magnificent animals and scenery you will ever see! Make sure to fully immerse yourself in the local culture in order to get the most out of your experience, after all, why travel if not to get out of your comfort zone and learn new things?

Whilst you are on the African continent, why not head south and explore the wonders of South Africa , or north to experience the unique culture of Morocco ?

Our 9 day Kenya safari itinerary with maps & budget

Lions, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests...a classic African safari at its best.

July 7, 2023

Kenya is one of the classic safari destinations and for good reasons. With the presence of the big 5, a plethora of other African animals, and its wildebeest migration, wildlife is usually the main focus. But Kenya has much more to offer and we invite you to discover it with our 9 day itinerary.

Kenya has to be the first country people think of when picturing a safari destination. It is host to numerous parks, reserves, and conservancies, with the Masai Mara being the most renowned. The big 5 can all be found (lions, buffalos, elephants, rhinos, and leopards) and the biannual wildebeest migration , where millions of them cross the Tanzanian border, is another trademark of this reserve. But the same incredible variety and quantity of wildlife can be seen anywhere in Kenya, not just in parks.

With 44 tribes, Kenya’s cultural heritage is also extremely rich. The Maasai tribe , while not the largest, is probably the most emblematic. Its members are famous for their distinctive customs, red dresses, and the bravery of their warriors. The country was also under the colonial influence of the British Empire from 1888 to 1962. This explains why the two official languages are Swahili and English, both largely in use, and adds another interesting layer of cultural complexity and identity.

Lastly, the Kenyan scenery has to be the silent contributor to the overall picture of this safari destination. With a range of savanna hills (Masai Mara), dry dusty stretches of land (Tsavo), drying swamps (Amboseli), expansive lakes (Bogoria, Naivasha, Nakuru, Victoria), towering mounts (Mount Kenya), volcanic activity (Mount Longonot), and deep gorges (Great Valley Rift), Kenya has been gifted with an immense variety of gorgeous landscapes.

Itinerary Breakdown

Our safari in Kenya was one of our best trips despite having traveled a fair bit! Whilst traveling, childhood memories were re-emerging from books we’d read, movies we’d watched, and even video games we’d played! (Have you ever been chased by wildebeests in The Lion King video game on Sega Genesis/Mega Drive? A stressful but memorable experience for a kid apparently!)

If you intend to go on a Kenyan safari, we hope our itinerary can give you some insights into how to best plan it, so you can live a similar experience.

Day 1 / Nairobi Day Tour

  • Drive around Nairobi 50km (31.1mi) | 2h

David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage

After being picked up by our guide for the day, the very first thing we did was actually paying off our balance for the whole safari which meant a quick trip to heavily guarded “money exchange street” in Nairobi.

After paying our dues, we then headed towards the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust ‘s Elephant orphanage which we wanted to reach for the daily 11am feeding time . The nursery is host to 16 elephants which you can watch drink milk from the bottle and play around with each other in water and mud.

  • Visit Time / 1h required (+30min waiting prior)

Giraffe centre

The Giraffe Centre aims to protect and breed the Rothschild’s giraffe , one of the three main giraffe subspecies. It is also an education center so you get to learn about giraffes, their population, and the center’s conservation efforts. Additionally, you get to feed the giraffes and, if you dare, get a kiss by putting the food pellet between your lips. The combination of education and feeding makes it a great family activity.

Viewpoint over Nairobi CBD at Uhuru Park

On our way back towards the city, we made a brief stop at Uhuru Park. On its western side, there is a viewpoint from which you have a vantage point over Nairobi. The park contains an artificial lake and a few national monuments so you can also spend some time wandering around.

Uhuru Park from viewpoint in Nairobi, Kenya

  • Opening Hours / Every day 24h (not safe at night)
  • Visit Time / As long as you want

Cash and Mobile Internet logistics in Nairobi’s CBD

We had planned for some free time in the afternoon and had two main goals: finding a SIM card so we could fill our vital need for Internet access and withdrawing enough cash to cover extra expenses like drinks and tips during our safari. The SIM cards didn’t take long to organize but it took us way more time than we had anticipated to find an ATM not charging us withdrawal fees.

In short, make sure to allow for enough time to get your bearings and organize a few things before you leave for your safari.

Carnivore restaurant

To wrap the day, we opted for the most famous — and very touristy — restaurant in Nairobi. It’s called the Carnivore and is the perfect name for its all-you-can-eat meat buffet which includes lamb, pork, beef, chicken, and more exotic meats like crocodile, ostrich, and camel.

Day 2-3 / Amboseli National Park

  • Nairobi – Amboseli NP 216km (134.2mi) | 6h including traffic and stops

The following morning we headed to Amboseli National Park , about 6 hours southeast of Nairobi. The park is located just opposite the Tanzanian border and its majestic Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa and the highest single free-standing mountain in the world.

Wildebeests grazing in front of Mount Kilimanjaro in Amboseli National Park, Kenya

The scenery was one of the two main reasons we picked this park. The park landscapes are just gorgeous with its swamps , its never-ending vista from the top of Observation Hill (at the Noomotio viewpoint), and the aforementioned Mount Kilimanjaro as a backdrop when the weather conditions are on your side.

Zebra herd running at sunset in Amboseli National Park, Kenya

The other main reason of our visit was for its resident hordes of elephants who just love refreshing and bathing in the swamps.

But the park is also host to many more animals than “just” elephants.

Day 4 / Drive to Naivasha

  • Amboseli NP – Naivasha 333km (206.9mi) | 8h including traffic and stops

We left Amboseli early in the morning for Naivasha, our next destination. It took roughly 8 hours in total because of the heavy traffic around Nairobi. We drove through a mountainous area west of Nairobi which overlooks the Great Rift valley and offers expansive views.

View over the Great rift valley in Kenya from viewpoint

Once in Naivasha, we were meant to get lunch, then head out for an afternoon walk with animals and sunset boat trip on Lake Naivasha but the rain decided to show up. Not being very excited at the prospect of getting drenched and with Guilly not feeling 100% (something we ate didn’t agree with him), we took our guide’s recommendation to postpone for a sunrise boat trip instead. That meant a big day ahead!

Day 5 / Lake Naivasha boat trip, Crescent Island walk, Hell’s Gate NP bike ride, Ol Njorowa Gorge walk & Lake Nakuru NP

This was a long title! But it also was a pretty full-on day! Surprisingly, the schedule mostly worked out despite being a bit rushed at times.

  • Naivasha lake boat ride 3km (1.9mi) | 1h
  • Sanctuary Farm walk 1km (0.6mi) | 1h
  • Naivasha – Lake Naivasha-Hell’s Gate NP 34km (21.1mi) | 1h
  • Elsa Gate – Ol Njorowa Ranger’s hut 8km (5.1mi) | 1h
  • Ol Njorowa Gorge 2km (1.4mi) | 1h
  • Hell’s Gate NP – Nakuru NP 104km (64.6mi) | 2h40min

Boat trip on Lake Naivasha

As planned, we woke up to watch the sunrise over the lake. Unfortunately, we had to watch it from the shore after some communication breakdown and ensuing delays. It was still very pretty with the mist over the lake, herons sifting through mud, fishermen throwing nets in the distance and the kind of silence you can only get when being up this early.

Eerie sunrise with mist among dead trees at Lake Naivasha, Kenya

The boat trip was awesome. We expected to see hippos in the lake and we were not disappointed with entire families wallowing in water and napping over each other’s back.

Anxious baby hippo with mummy staring at camera in Lake Naivasha, Kenya

Observing the fishermen cast their nets was also of interest. Considering hippos are dangerous and very aggressive (they kill about 500 people a year), it’s insane to think that those men have no choice but to risk their lives daily to make a living. Our guide informed us that there is an average of 3 deaths by hippos each month in this lake alone. A few quick searches online seemed to confirm those numbers including a couple of unlucky tourists once in a while (roughly once a year).

Although our main interest was the hippos, we also got to see defassa waterbucks and a lot of cool birdlife including herons, egrets, cormorants, sea eagles, pelicans, yellow-billed storks, and huge marabou storks (they have one of the widest wingspans of all birds).

  • Opening Hours / Every day from sunrise to sunset
  • Cost / Ksh. 1,500-4,000/pers + tip (varies greatly from operator to operator so shop around; you should get a cheaper price through your guide too)

Walk around “Crescent Island”

Once we reached the end of our boat trip, we were handed over to another guide for a “walk on Crescent Island”. Well, that’s what we signed up for anyway, but ended up walking in a nearby private property called Sanctuary Farm instead. Not having been there, we therefore can’t comment on what Crescent Island is like, but we were not disappointed with our walk at Sanctuary Farm.

One of the downsides of the most famous safari parks is that you need to remain in your vehicle at all times, as there could be dangerous animals nearby. Coming to the Naivasha area, you are able to walk among wildlife because there are no big cats. And that’s exactly what we did. We saw so many wildebeests, gazelles, impalas, waterbucks, zebras, and giraffes . Baby zebras and giraffes are the cutest!

  • Sanctuary Farm
  • Opening Hours / Every day from sunrise to sunset (or later if you stay there)
  • Visit Time / 1h 15min
  • Cost / Unknown + tip for the guide

Bicycle riding in Hell’s Gate National Park

In a similar vein to Crescent Island, head to Hell’s Gate National Park only a few kilometers away from the lake, rent a mountain bike and ride among wildlife .

On top of the animals we had just seen, we saw warthogs, helmeted guinea fowls, and buffalos . Surprisingly, the peaceful-looking buffalos can be bad-tempered and are therefore the only animals you need to pay attention to safety-wise.

Stopping with the bicycle to admire the view in Hell's Gate National Park, Kenya

Being part of the African Great Rift Valley , the scenery is stunning with towering cliffs and gorges, rock towers you can climb, and geothermal smoke activity in the background (which is used for generating energy). No wonder why the park setting and its environment largely inspired the Lion King movie .

We only crossed the park from one end to the other (it’s not huge) on the main track, but there seemed to be much more to the park than what we’ve seen. If you’re not in a rush like we were, you could easily spend half a day to a day there.

  • Hell’s Gate National Park
  • Visit Time / 1h-1 day
  • Cost / US$26/pers/24h + Ksh. 300 or Ksh. 1,030 per vehicle (under 6 seats vs 6-12 seats) Consult all park fees
  • Distance / 8.2km of cycling (Elsa Gate-Ol Njorowa Ranger’s hut)

Walk in the Ol Njorowa Gorge

The gorge is conveniently located on the other side of Hell’s Gate National Park so we only had to ride another 200 meters on the road before reaching it, which marked the end of our ride too. We were then assigned one of the local Masai guides , a man in his 50’s or 60’s who turned out to be surprisingly agile and swift when it came to trek in treacherous and slippery conditions. (At least that’s how it felt to us! OK maybe it was not that bad.)

The gorge is very pretty and partly renowned thanks to a few movies filmed there, the most famous being Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life . Its geothermal features also make it of interest with burning hot water seeping in places through its sidewalls. The way to tell if it was hot before burning your finger, was to look for dark green moss around the stream.

River at bottom of Ol Njorowa Gorge in Hell's Gate National Park, Kenya

Being on a schedule and with such a big day, we had to rush through the gorge and take a few shortcuts. We wish we had had more time to really explore the gorge or at least take our time, but it was still an enjoyable experience.

Unfortunately, the gorge is indefinitely closed due to flash floods which happened the day after we visited (we were there on the 1st of September 2019) and took seven lives ! We later learned that such an accident had already happened in 2012 with the same number of fatalities. It was reopened after a while and no accident had happened since. Flash floods are very difficult to predict as it does not have to rain in the area for them to happen. The park administration seemed to be hoping to reopen in early 2020 after putting in place extra safety measures (the Hell’s Gate NP visits had dropped by 30% since) but it has yet to happen as of June 2020. Unless, you go with a guide… I have read a few recent reviews and even some blog article suggesting some tourists could visit it (some only from the top edge, some as per normal).

As for ourselves, we count ourselves lucky as it could easily have been us, had we organized our safari itinerary any differently!

  • Lake Nakuru National Park

As the name indicates, the Lake Nakuru National Park ‘s main natural feature is its lake. It isn’t very difficult to navigate as tracks essentially circle it. There are numerous standing dead trees on the lake edge which creates an eerie atmosphere in places. It’s especially true where the, now flooded and abandoned, old park gates are located which is very picturesque. There are a few hilly sectors, especially west of the lake, affording extensive views over the whole area. At the Baboon Cliff viewpoint, we bumped, not into monkeys, but rock hyraxes which are cute rodents resembling marmots.

The lake used to be home to millions of flamingos but a large increase of the water level in 2013 caused them to migrate to Lake Bogoria instead. There are still some, but we did see more in Amboseli when we were there (August-September). Flamingos aren’t the only bird to call lake Nakuru home.

Crested Crane at Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya

We were aware of the lack of flamingos so were not disappointed. The main reason we had Nakuru on our itinerary was for its rhinos! There was only a slim chance we could see them in other parks, so Nakuru was a good complement. Moreover, the park is host to both white and black rhinos , the latter being even rarer and currently critically endangered. We managed to see a few white rhinos from afar (as well as a leopard ) but unfortunately only got a glimpse of the elusive black rhino.

There is a section on the East side of the lake (at least when we were there) where the track was overrun with baboons . They are always good fun to observe!

The Masai Mara National Reserve (affectionately called the Mara) is the figurehead of Kenyan safari parks and one of the most renowned in the world. It directly faces the Serengenti National Park across the Tanzanian border, another worldwide famous national park, to form a unique ecosystem of rivers and gently rolling savanna hills .

Its most famous river is the Mara river where we could admire thousands of wildebeests crossing the river as part of their biannual migration between Kenya and Tanzania. Hippos were quietly minding their own business whilst some of the wildebeests could not make it to the other side due to resident crocodiles . This is an extraordinary natural phenomenon to witness and unique to this part of Africa.

The park is also known for being host to the big 5: leopards, buffalos, rhinos, elephants, and the “Lion King” , the latter being present in the highest density in the world.

Other predators such as hyenas and cheetahs are frequent sights attracted by the high concentration in game such as wildebeests, zebras, impalas, giraffes (of the Masai subspecies), gazelles, warthogs and so many more!

Jumping contest at a Maasai Village in Masai Mara, Kenya

It is possible to visit a local Maasai village for a fee. A local guide is assigned to you and the villagers all gather to perform a traditional welcome song and dance for you in traditional costumes . A few more songs and dances are interpreted by various members of the tribe and you finally take part in their customary jumping contest (adamu) which is a lot of fun and determines who will attract a bride (Guilly probably would have remained single!) during the Eunoto celebration (junior warriors becoming seniors). Lastly, you get to visit the village and its mud houses , see how they live, learn about their customs and history , and finish in their local craft market, perfect if you’d like extra souvenirs.

If you have 12, 15, 17 or more days in Kenya

If you have 12 days in kenya.

  • Add a day in Nairobi to cover the Karen Blixen Museum, the National Museum, the Nairobi National Park, and a guided visit of the Kibera slum (if it appeals to you). All these are described in our article about the best 10 places to visit in Nairobi .
  • Add a day in the Naivasha area. Mount Longonot is a dormant volcano that can be hiked and isn’t very far from Naivasha. The extra day will also allow you to take your time in Hell’s Gate National Park.
  • Add a day in Nakuru. We felt that we could have benefitted from more time to enjoy the area and have better chances of spotting the black and white rhinos.

If you have 15 days in Kenya

  • Spend 3 days in the West and East Tsavo National Parks
  • Spend 3 days relaxing by the beach in Mombasa and fly back from there
  • Spend 2 days in Stone Town
  • Spend 2 days in Nungwi
  • Spend 2 days in Paje

If you have 17 days in Kenya and Tanzania

  • cross over to Tanzania from Amboseli NP
  • cover the Arusha National Park,
  • Tarangire National Park,
  • Lake Manyara National Park,
  • Ngorongoro Crater,
  • Serengeti National Park,
  • and finally, cross back to Kenya close to Masai Mara

We could offer you a thousand more itineraries with possible combinations but here are some parks or activities for you to consider in your itinerary instead:

  • The Aberdare NP
  • The Samburu NP
  • Lake Bogoria
  • Climb the Kilimanjaro (from five to nine days to complete)
  • A gorilla trek in Uganda

Accommodation

  • Loved the safari vibes of the gorgeous tented camps of Kibo Safari Camp , Flamingo Hill Tented Camp and Mara Eden Camp that we stayed at in Amboseli, Nakuru, and Masai Mara (generally, we preferred tented camps over hotels and lodges)
  • LOVED the scenery next to the Mara Eden Camp with plenty of hippos and HUGE crocodiles just meters away from our tent!

Our Kenya safari budget

First of all, you need to understand that many factors can influence the cost of a safari. Here were our choices so you can compare costs properly.

Our safari choices

  • 4 parks (Masai Mara, Amboseli, Nakuru, Hell’s gate)
  • 4 extra activities (boat trip, animal sanctuary walk, cycling, Masai village visit)
  • 1 day guided visit of Nairobi
  • Standards ranging from “budget” to “mid-range” (mostly mid-range)
  • Both inside and outside of the parks depending on the park or night
  • 1 combined guide/driver
  • Very experienced guide
  • English speaking (cheaper than French)
  • Private 4WD
  • Access to the parks by road (cheaper as opposed to flying in)

Safari company

  • Very reputable local safari company; Explorer Kenya was #1 on TripAdvisor when we did our research

Other factors

  • High season (August)

Safari budget breakdown

It’s difficult to provide an exact breakdown of all costs as most accommodation, food, transport, and activities were included in our safari package. Only a few expenses before and after the safari were separate. They provided little insights, so we preferred to include them in the package so they could be averaged per day.

If the final amounts scare you, don’t worry, they still scare us too! Although, not all safaris have to be expensive . However, we treated our first safari as a once in a lifetime experience and didn’t want to cheap out to enjoy it fully. Next time (hopefully) might be different!

Cost of insurance and flights have not been included as they will vary largely depending on your travel circumstances (i.e. trip duration, period, and origin). Check out this link if you’d like to know how much the flight to Nairobi would cost you.

Kenya Starters & Tips

Kenya starters.

  • Currency / Kenyan Shillings (KES), US dollars are also widely accepted in the tourism industry
  • Language(s) / Swahili and English
  • Driving side / Left

Best time to visit Kenya

The best time to visit Kenya is during the dry season from late June to October for better weather and for chances to see the wildebeest migration. It is still feasible in the wet season but will require a 4WD. Not all tracks and rivers will be passable.

Swahili Basics

  • Jambo / Hello. You’ll hear it a lot!
  • Assante / Thank you.
  • Karibu / Welcome.
  • Hakuna Matata / No worries
  • Simba / Lion
  • Mufasa / King
  • Pumbaa / Slow witted
  • Timon / Respect
  • Nala / Gift
  • Rafiki / Friend
  • Zazu / Movement

If you haven’t worked it out yet, the Lion King character names are all Swahili words!

SIM card / We have used Safaricom which worked even in remote areas within safari parks

Money exchange / Avoid airports and hotels if you can, they have terrible exchange rates. Ask your guide for the best money exchange if you have one. There are numerous money changers in Nairobi otherwise, just don’t change any money on the street, it’s illegal and you’ll probably get scammed.

Corruption / Unfortunately, corrupt police in Kenya seems to be widespread. Being driven by a guide, we haven’t had to face it ourselves, but it is a widely known fact. If you do get asked for a bribe, refuse to pay it. If you are not let go, then have your embassy phone number handy and warn to call them, it should hopefully do the trick. Paying bribes only perpetuates the problem.

Maasai photos / It’s generally advised to ask before taking photos of people. It’s especially true for Maasais as they will apparently throw stones at your vehicle if you do! We haven’t tried to verify our guide’s theory.

Plan Your Kenya Safari Trip

Getting to kenya.

  • From North America / You can fly from New York (JFK) directly into Nairobi (NBO)
  • From Europe / There are direct flights to Nairobi from London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Geneva, Zürich, Rome, and Istanbul.
  • From Australia / There are no direct flights to Nairobi from any city in Australia. Your best bets to connect will be flying through Dubai or Johannesburg.

Getting around in Kenya

Your two main options will be to either hire the service of a guide or to self-drive. Although, renting a car is also possible if you are brave enough.

Travel Insurance

Before you leave on any trip, whether it is for a weekend or multiple months, it’s crucial you get travel insurance . It always baffles us when we meet oblivious travelers who believe they are invincible and travel without insurance. These are usually the same people who will ride motorcycles without a helmet (because not wearing one in countries with higher road fatalities makes total sense…)

Medical costs overseas can add up very quickly especially if you require hospitalization let alone evacuation . Worst comes to worst, body repatriation costs aren’t the best parting gift for your relatives either.

If you need to cancel or shorten your trip for health, business, or personal reasons (e.g. death of a close relative), your insurance can cover the costs too.

Lastly, travel plans seem to change constantly. If your flight gets canceled or delayed , if your baggage gets lost , if a coronavirus pandemic cancels all of your travel plans, you’ll be glad you took insurance to cover for these unforeseen circumstances!

We know it sometimes feels like an unnecessary expense and it is until you suddenly require to pay thousands of dollars for an illness or injury. It really is a small cost to pay for peace of mind .

We climb the eastern lake wall before breakfast to have an excellent view of the lake in the morning. We return to the bush camp for breakfast before driving to Lake Nakuru National Park in time for lunch. We proceed on an afternoon wildlife drive to observe rhinos, lions, zebras, hyenas, giraffes, buffaloes, Impala baboon bands, and a variety of water birds such as pelicans, cormorants, and hundreds of thousands of flamingos.

Hell’s Gate is located immediately beyond Naivasha Lake. Visitors can drive, stroll, camp, cycle, and rock climb within the park, which is known for its natural hot geysers and eagle and vulture breeding areas. Viewing points of interest include Fischer’s Tower, which was once a volcano’s plug, the Central Tower, and the Njorowa Gorges. Olkaira and Hobley’s extinct volcanoes are worth a visit.

Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya

After breakfast, drive to Masai Mara. Enchoro Camp serves lunch. In the afternoon, we go on a wildlife drive in the Masai Mara Game Reserve.

A full day was spent visiting the park in quest of the big five. There are morning and afternoon game drives available. A hot air balloon expedition is available for an additional fee of US$500 per person. The Mara has such a diverse and abundant biodiversity that it is difficult to believe: over 450 species of animals have been reported here. Lions, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, wildebeests, zebras, buffalo, warthogs, hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, buffalo, leopards, various antelopes, and elephants are all common. The Mara hosts what is arguably the most stunning natural phenomenon on the planet. This is the annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra from Tanzania’s Serengeti to find water and grazing. The predators of the savanna are close behind, including the lion, cheetah, wild dog, jackal, hyena, and vultures.

Tree climbing lions. Limitless pink flamingos. A magnificent volcanic crater. The largest lake in Africa. An unending savannah. The great migration. This safari adventure has so much to see and experience, the memories will last you a lifetime.

For 9 days you will explore the finest parks of Tanzania and Kenya, touching vivid landscapes filled with millions of wild animals. The drama of East Africa will greet you each morning with a dazzling sunrise beginning your daily adventure.

Departing Nairobi, we head for the Tanzania border. On the way, you’ll take in views of towering Mt. Kilimanjaro , the largest summit in Africa. This is Masai country and you’ll view farms and plantations on this first leg of your journey.

Our first stop is Lake Manyara National Park – home to the famous tree climbing lions. Just as famous is the sea of fluttering pink flamingos you’ll find here. And you can’t miss the herds of elephants among the many creatures inhabiting this small but beautiful park.

Then it’s a short drive to the largest intact volcanic caldera on the planet – Ngorongoro Crater . Three million years ago a large volcano exploded here. What remained was the crater floor – 610 m deep and 260 square km or 100 square miles in area. This is where we will descend to discover unsurpassed game viewing in a special world unto itself.

Here you’ll discover the highest density of lion and predators in Africa. View rhino, buffalo, hippo, wildebeest and much more wildlife. Later, up at the crater rim get ready to enjoy one of its signature brilliant sunsets.

Traveling on through the Serengeti we explore Olduvai Gorge , earliest site of humankind. Within this steep ravine the ancient rock formations have left clues as to our ancestors’ lives and development. Here you can literally touch history.

And now we arrive at the picture-perfect vastness of Serengeti National Park . The park is so massive it practically enfolds you into its immense rolling plain. Everything about the Serengeti is big – a million plus herd of wildebeest, 250,000 zebras plus lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo and thousands of smaller game like jackal, hyena and wolf. And if all that weren’t enough, be on the lookout for the olive baboon, velvet monkey and black and white colobus.

In relaxing contrast to the intensity of Serengeti, we next head for scenic Lake Victoria , the largest lake in Africa and the world’s second largest freshwater lake. You can take a breather on Victoria’s historic shores, and should you desire, visit the local market near the small town of Bunda. We’ll also tour a fishing village to learn about the local lifestyle along this great lake.

Crossing back into Kenya you’ll be immersed in the beauty of the great  Maasai Mara National Reserve . The Mara is world-famous and the quintessential picture of Africa. This is a deeply rich eco-system blessed with a distinct variety of animal life. Here, you’ll be looking for Africa’s Big Five predators, along with dozens of other species.

Enjoy a picnic lunch by the Mara River where you’ll dine and view the hippos and crocodiles as they dine.

You’ll also have opportunities for several optional activities such as guided nature walks, balloon safari rides and a chance to visit with the Maasai people in their village.
