I Love The 90s Tour

Featuring montell jordan, young mc, color me badd, rob base and all-4-one, mohegan sun casino arena uncasville, connecticut september 25, 2022.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Connecticut was treated to an arena sized house party with a selection of some of the biggest rap, hip hop and R&B names that were ever to grace a 90s mix tape. A fun night of music was on the agenda led by the hit-masters of the 90s to include Montell Jordan, Young MC, Color Me Badd, Rob Base and All-4-One. Fun and nostalgia were the common denominators through the night, each artist had and essence and energy all of their own.

If you were having a party in the 90s, chances are this was some of the music that you were listening to. Northeast Rock Review writes mostly about rock shows and our superhero rockstars that originated out of the 70s and 80s era. The 90s were a different feel and this was the some of the music that dominated the 90s era, a time when most of the 80s rock superstars quietly slipped away from our radios and CD players, they either broke up, changed their sound or became non-existent, quietly slipping away under the dark clouds of early 90s grunge movement.

The 90s had one of the best eras in music for rap, hip-hop and R&B; artists that made the 90s fun. The I Love the 90s  tour brings the fun music back to venues all across the country.

The night started out with DJ Capone who was playing through an assortment of music from the 80s/90s, rap, rock, hip-hop; the perfect recipe to get the crowd fired up as everyone found their seats. The actual show hadn’t even started yet and the audience was getting fired up. In between the tracks DJ Capone surveyed the audience to find out what year everyone was born, 80s, 90s, 70s… and the results determined that those born in the 70s had the best era. Certainly true, born in the 70s and we got to enjoy the 80s and into the 90s. Then no one is really sure quite what happened to the good music after that. No matter what decade you came from, everyone was there to have a good time.

The lyrical fun kicked off with Montell Jordan to start the evening with his 1995, #1 Billboard Top 100 chart topper, “This is How We Do It.” Jordan performed an arrangement of his music for a quick set. His voice sounded smooth, this was a perfect way to get the energy going for the night.

Then it was time to “Bust a Move” with Young MC, with the classic sounds of this timeless 1989 hit. Young MC took to the stage to perform, starting off with “Nocturnal,” followed by an assortment of other songs. By now the audience were already on their feet, Young MC asked that those not standing please stand up, saying “ It’s a good song, I promise, ” performing the iconic, chart topping “Bust A Move.” The set closed with “Fastest Rhyme” from his debut, 1989, ‘Stone Cold Rhymin’ album.

Next up was Color Me Badd. The only original member is Mark Calderon, backed by two other vocalists and dancers to accompany him on stage. Color Me Badd put on a very energetic performance and really had the audience on their feet, opening with “All 4 Love.” There was even a marriage proposal that took place on stage, and she said yes . The set included “I Wanna Sex You Up,” “I Adore Mi Amor,” a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You” as well as a few other songs. Concluding their set, a birthday cake was brought out onto the stage, as it was Mark Calderon’s birthday.

COLOR ME BADD

The night was wrapping up, but there was time for the Grammy Award winning All-4-One, best known for thier 90s chart toppers such as “I Swear,” I Can love You Like That” and “So Much In Love.” All-4-One’s membership remains Jamie Jones, Tim “Delious” Kennedy, Alfred Nevarez and Tony Borowiak. The set included their hits as well as a cover of “September” by Earth, Wind and Fire.

All in all this was a fun night of music where the performers took us on a trip back through the good old days the 90s and it was great to see these guys perform live. Their music was a part of the soundtrack to my 90s.

About Montell Jordan

When Montell Jordan first started out, his style was undefined, as he borrowed from the musical qualities of Michael Jackson, Prince, Lionel Richie, and the like. Knowing he had to develop his own style – to sound like somebody who didn’t exist yet – Jordan started sampling Blues records, singing melodies and writing Rap lyrics in a “straight-outta Los Angeles” way, eventually combining these features with his earlier influences to create a sound that would define him. Little did he know, he would become the pioneer of the type of combined Rap/R&B ballads heavily taking over the charts today.

Jordan took over the charts in 1995 with singles like “This Is How We Do It,” “Somethin 4 Da Honeyz,” “I Like,” and “Let’s Ride” featuring Master P and Silkk the Shocker. Not only was he gifted vocally, but he was a producer and writer penning tracks for other notable artists including Deborah Cox’s 1998 No. 2 Billboard single “Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here,” Sisqó’s 2000 No. 1 Hit “Incomplete” and many more.

About All-4-One

Celebrating their 29th anniversary this year, All-4-One continues to tour the world as the original members with a collection of hit songs under their belt. The Grammy Award-winning group All-4-One is internationally known for making beautiful love songs that not only chart radio airwaves, but also garner countless awards.

All-4-One’s very first single “So Much in Love,” scaled to RIAA Gold Sales and Top 5 Pop status. The California-based quartet soon marked their place in the industry as premier balladeers. Their second single “I Swear,” claimed the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 spot for 11 consecutive weeks, while sales skyrocketed to hold the No. 1 selling single status in 1994 and third most successful single of the Rock era. “I Swear” still holds a spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 as one of the most successful singles of all time and has been named by ASCAP as one of the greatest love songs of the 20th century. “I Swear” is recorded in history with an imprint in the Guinness Book of World Records (as the biggest selling single of 1994).

The group’s second album was highlighted by “I Can Love You Like That,” which hit the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. To date they have released a total of seven albums and sold more than 20 million units worldwide, won a bevy of awards including a Grammy, American Music Award, a Blockbuster Award, countless international awards and completed multiple major world tours.

About Rob Base

Rob Base hails from Harlem, New York. He first began with various groups such as Sure Shot Seven, Cosmic 3 MC’s, and Freedom Force. He and partner DJ EZ Rock (whom he has known since the fourth grade) would eventually separate from the groups to form Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock. Their first single “DJ Interview” came out on Mike and Dave’s label Star Maker’s Records in 1986. World to World Records would produce their second single “Make It Hot” in 1987. Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock’s music began to gain momentum and they would receive a distribution deal with Profile Records by 1988.

In 1988, Profile Records released Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock’s debut album It Takes Two . The title track became a massive single. The single and the album were certified Platinum by the RIAA on June 12, 1989, and December 28, 1989, respectively, and produced three top 10 hits. The single earned “Single of the Year” honors from both Spin Magazine and The Village Voice . Additional singles such as “Get on the Dance Floor” (which reached No. 1 on the Dance Club charts) and “Joy and Pain” continued to help push the album to multi-platinum status. In 1989, Rob Base dropped a solo release album The Incredible Base , which went Gold and included a number of hits such as “Turn It Out (Go Base)” and “Get Up and Have A Good Time.” In the last 30 years, Rob Base has continued to make his mark in the Hip-Hop and Freestyle worlds.

About Color Me Badd

Color Me Badd is one of the top R&B vocal groups of all time. The group has sold 12 million records in the U.S., and the group is well-known in Australia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, the U.K. and New Zealand. Their debut album C.M.B. sold more than 6 million copies worldwide and became certified Triple Platinum in the U.S. They have three No. 1 singles and 17 Top 20 singles.

Five hit singles from their debut album C.M.B. include “I Wanna Sex You Up,” “I Adore Mi Amor” “All 4 Love” “Thinkin’ Back” and “Slow Motion.”

About Young MC

Rapper Marvin Young grew up middle class and earned a degree in economics from the University of Southern California, where he met Michael Ross and Matt Dike, cofounders of the fledgling Delicious Vinyl rap label. Young made his debut as Young MC on the single “I Let ‘Em Know.” In 1989, Young collaborated with Tone-Loc on “Wild Thing,” the first Top Ten Pop hit for a Black rapper and the follow up smash “Funky Cold Medina.”

Young stepped out on his own later in the year with the Top Ten smash “Bust a Move,” a good-natured examination of romantic successes and failures spiced by his sense of humor and quick tongued rapping. The song won a Grammy for “Best Rap Performance” and its strong Pop appeal helped the associated album Stone Cold Rhymin’ go Platinum. The follow up “Principal’s Office” was a humorous, everyday high school tale resembling a Chuck Berry plot and also climbed into the Top 40.

'I Love the 90s' brought R&B hits to Mohegan Sun Casino (review)

UNCASVILLE, Conn. - Concertgoers were promised a party.

The "I Love the 90's: The Party Continues" tour stopped by the Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday night, bringing a variety of acts ranging from TLC to Coolio center stage for a nostalgia-filled journey through, arguably, hip-hop and R&B's most beloved era.

But while the show was billed as an "arena-sized dance party," it was apparent early on in the night that concertgoers could expect an arena-sized marketing machine heavy on vague feelings of nostalgia and light on content.

With a pair of DJ's spinning the decade's finest R&B for the hour prior to the performance, C+C Music Factory featuring Freedom Williams took the stage first.

However, the group proved to be nonexistent due in part to Williams - who served as lead vocalist on "Gonna Make You Sweat," one of the decade's biggest dance hits - possessing trademark rights to the name and subsequently using it to promote the night's forthcoming acts.

The first of these forthcoming acts would be Color Me Badd, an all-male, denim-clad trio best-known for 1991's "I Wanna Sex You Up."

Despite performing the night's first cohesive set of actual songs, including a cover of Blackstreet's "No Diggity," Color Me Badd proved to concertgoers that, unfortunately, every band on Spotify and Pandora-curated 1990s hip-hop playlists have back catalogues stretching beyond one or two "hits."

Biz Markie would follow up with a surprisingly brief, three-song set.

Perhaps best-known for "Just a Friend," ironically released in 1989, Markie proved to be one of the night's highlights, performing exactly what concertgoers expected to hear while slouched in front of an unused drum set and 1990s-approved neon logo.

While Markie's self-deprecation seemed like a tough act to follow, Montell Jordan proved himself to be up to the task.

Taking the time to interact with the crowd at length and adamant about taking the nearly-full Mohegan Sun Arena crowd "down memory lane," Jordan would do just that, performing "I Like" and pulling double duty as co-lead vocalist Slick Rick, Sisqo's "Incomplete," which Jordan wrote, and Jordan's own hit song, 1995's "This Is How We Do It."

But with momentum finally picking up, it was Coolio who would leave concertgoers in a saxophone-clogged haze after an equally brief set.

With much of the night feeling like an advertisement for Universal Attractions Agency's upcoming "Ship-Hop Cruise" featuring the same artists, except on a cruise ship - the 54-year old Compton native took to the stage with the night's first live band, devoting more than half his set to a lengthy saxophone solo along with introductions to band members.

The night was capped off with one of the biggest selling acts of the 1990s, TLC.

Dormant in the studio since 2002, when Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was tragically killed in a car accident at the height of the group's career, surviving members Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas' grandiose stage show featuring a live band augmented by electronic samples (including Lopes' vocal tracks) and backup dancers felt like too little, too late.

Blowing through shortened versions of songs both new and old, from 1999's "Fanmail" to 2017's "It's Sunny," the duo would save the best for last, including "No Scrubs" and "Waterfalls," ending an uneven night of music on a high note.

Leonid & Friends

Passion. Persistence. Perfection. By Scott Schwebke

With multiple sold-out U.S. tours under its belt and hundreds of thousands of fans around the world, Leonid & Friends continues to astound its global audience with its unique ability in capturing the spirit, musicality, and fire of American supergroup Chicago. And what is even more stunning is that Leonid & Friends, comprised of 11 of the finest musicians in Russia, haven't seen Chicago perform live until recently, yet replicates the band’s complex arrangements amazingly note for note. Chicago has never been in Russia, and none of us have attended their concerts until just recently in the United States," said Leonid Vorobyev, a multi-instrumentalist who is the band’s leader. "We have only recordings and videos (to help us learn Chicago songs)."

Ironically, Vorobyev wasn’t always a fan of horn bands, and as a teenager gravitated to the hard-driving guitar-based sounds of the Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Deep Purple, and Grand Funk Railroad. "In the early 1970s in the USSR, electric guitars, amplifiers, and drums were rare to find so at school we were playing self-made instruments," Vorobyev explained. "We were allowed to rehearse in the same room with a horns band. Those musicians almost always were drunk and quite often tried to play with us our rock songs. It was a nightmare, and I hated them all!" But that all changed when Vorobyev heard Chicago. He became an instant fan. "I loved so much the brilliant mixture of rock guitars, drums, and jazz horns with bright vocal harmonies," he said. In 2014, Vorobyev decided to indulge his love for the band by gathering a few fellow musicians in a studio to record a video of them playing his favorite Chicago tune, Brand New Love Affair. No charts or scores of the song existed so Vorobyev transcribed the tune by ear. The result was a YouTube video that quickly went viral. Since then Leonid & Friends has recorded videos of other Chicago hits including Make Me Smile , 25 or 6 to 4 , and Saturday In The Park . All total the videos have received more than 50 million views. Also, Leonid & Friends has recorded two albums showcasing its tribute to Chicago. The process of getting each tune just right is a painstaking labor of love. In addition to scoring and arranging, Vorobyev oversees mixing and mastering of each song. However, he credits his highly skilled bandmates for making each tune sing. "All of my musician friends are highly professional," he said. However, Leonid & Friends hasn’t been satisfied with merely connecting with fans through videos and recordings. In early 2019, the band embarked on its first tour outside of Russia that had fans dancing in the aisles at sold-out shows in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Florida. Two other scorching coast-to-coast U.S. tours followed that same year. “The fans were so eager to see us that some traveled from as far as Hawaii and the Philippines not mentioning flying across the U.S .and driving for hours to attend our shows,” Vorobyev said. “I was expecting a warm greeting but I didn't expect such a warm reception and with so much love and gratitude for us.” In Los Angeles, the band met its musical heroes, founding members of Chicago, keyboardist Robert Lamm, and drummer Danny Seraphine as well as Michelle Kath Sinclair, daughter of late, great Chicago guitarist Terry Kath. “We were so thrilled that Robert, Danny, and Michelle took the time to visit with us,” Vorobyev said. “It was an experience that we will cherish and remember forever.” When Leonid & Friends isn’t touring, band members are in the studio in Moscow immersing themselves in Chicago’s storied catalog of hits and deep tracks while preparing for the next tour. In September of 2018, the band recorded its first song from legendary supergroup Earth, Wind, & Fire and also paid tribute to the band Blood, Sweat & Tears as well. Borrowing a line from one of Chicago's biggest hits, "it's only the beginning" of great things from Leonid & Friends.

Scott Schwebke has been a journalist for more than 30 years and a longtime fan of Chicago dating back to its incarnation as CTA. His work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the Denver Post, Orange County Register and various publications across the U.S.

Learn more about Leonid and his Friends.

Leonid Vorobyev

Musical director and founder of Leonid & Friends.

Leonid Vorobyev is the leader and founder of the band Leonid & Friends. He is the band’s producer, plays bass and piano, sings lead and backing vocals, transcribes all the musical sources, and he produces, mixes, and masters all audio and video productions. Leonid graduated from East Siberian Institute of Culture as a Choir Conductor. He had been working in various bands as a bass player and a singer when in 1989 he chose studio operations as his main interest and began a career as a record-mix engineer and sound producer. He has been working as a music producer, sound engineer, composer, and musician for about 30 years. Many Russian bands and singers have passed through his hands and ears. At the end of 2014, Leonid decided to give himself a gift to celebrate his retirement by recording a cover version of Chicago’s song Brand New Love Affair. No charts or scores of the song existed so he transcribed the musical source by ear, called upon his friends and recorded the song. What happened when the song was released surprised everyone and was the start of the new project ‘Leonid & Friends’.

Vasilii Akimov

Vocals/Guitar

A graduate of the Irkutsk College of the Arts and Institute of Contemporary Art. Vasily has won several international music competitions. He has been a member of the Russian hard rock band Monomakh, where he won praise from former Black Sabbath frontman Ronnie James Dio.

Sergey Kashirin

Vocals/Guitar (Former Member)

Sergey Kashirin was born in 1982 in Tiraspol, Transnistria, in Eastern Europe. A music enthusiast at an early age, Sergey began singing and playing guitar when he was only 8 years old. Following his musical dreams throughout his school years, he was accepted into the Tiraspol Rubinstein Musical College from which he graduated. After graduation, Sergey moved to Moscow where he quickly found work as a studio session musician playing for many Russian pop and rock stars. This led to live performance requests as well. Sergey is a founder of several musical projects, three of which are Real Bodrit, Rock Band, and Smilin’man, a multi-genre project of depth which allows him to stretch his musical and vocal talents. Many people took notice of his talents and in 2012, he began composing music for the film and television industries. Along the way, Sergey made many friends in the music industry and considered a number of them very close. In 2014, he was approached by one of those friends and asked to participate in recording a cover of a song from the American band Chicago for Leonid Vorobyev. The audio recording and subsequent video of the song Brand New Love Affair were not supposed to be anything more than a birthday gift to his friend but the rest of the world didn’t see it that way. After posting it on YouTube for their friends to view the word began to spread, and what was supposed to be a simple act of kindness for his friend, turned into the band Leonid & Friends recording many more songs which have been viewed in over 150 countries at last count. Sergey, being a founding member, performs regularly in both studio and live performances.

Serge Tiagniryadno

Serge Tiagniryadno was born and lives in Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine where he runs the popular recording studio Crystal Sound of which he founded. Serge is a multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, bass guitar, clarinet, saxophone, percussion, drums, and keyboards. He’s combined those talents with his smooth vocals as a member of numerous bands throughout the area such as Seven Seas, and Ocheretyaniy Kit. Serge’s love for music started at the age of three with the guitar, and at four years old he began formal lessons on the piano. When he turned nine he added clarinet to the mix. He later went on to study as a television and film director at the Karpenko-Kariy Kiev National University of Theatre, Cinema and Television and he also attended the Kiev Institute of Theatrical Arts. Serge’s introduction to Leonid & Friends came by way of Trent Gardner, the web manager of the band Chicago. He conducted an online contest for Leonid to find a vocal talent comparable to that of Chicago’s Peter Cetera. Serge recorded his first song with Leonid & Friends in the summer of 2015 from his own studio in Kiev but didn’t personally meet the band members until the spring of 2016. Since then he’s been featured in numerous tracks by the band and performs regularly with them on the road.

Igor Javad-Zade

Sergey did so well that at 18, he was awarded admission to the Kyrgyzstan National Conservatory of Music in Bishkek to continue studying the piano, his long time dream. After graduating in 2004, he moved to Moscow, where celebrity singers began requesting his talents. Since then, Sergey has worked and performed with many top musical acts and together with his wife, an excellent singer in her own right, have organized concerts. During his first live streaming concert with the band, Roman Vorobyev introduced him to the fans. Sergey said, “When I saw Leonid & Friends on YouTube, I thought myself maybe one day I would play in a band like this. But now I’m here, it’s a magic, thank you my God, and I very glad to be part of Leonid & Friends. Thank you very much, thank you for trust and I want to see our friends in the future.”

Oleg Kudryavtsev

Oleg Kudryavtcev was born in Severodvinsk, located on the White Sea coast of the Arkhangelsk region, Russia, in 1984. His parents, a musician and kindergarten teacher, realized his affection for music early and at 9 years old his father enrolled him in a school of music and proposed that he should consider the saxophone. Although Oleg was interested in every instrument he saw, he agreed with his father and began formal studies. Everyone quickly realized how well Oleg was progressing and the decision was made to further his studies. Oleg transferred to the college of music in Arkhangelsk and then on to the Academy of music in Moscow. He remained in Moscow and began playing in various groups performing in a variety of musical styles. He never gravitated toward a single genre saying, “I have no preference in music styles. I love Pop, Funk, Soul, Jazz, Indie, electronic, anything is fine with me.” Oleg went on to work with many artists and played for years with the popular group Bravo which was established in 1983, a year before he was born. In 2017 he was excited to audition for Leonid & Friends because he’s loved the music of Chicago since childhood. He said, “My father introduced me to their creativity.” Looking back on his first USA tour with Leonid & Friends, Oleg said, “I am very grateful to my parents and teachers for helping me to become a professional musician. I love my profession and the smiles of the audiences at the concerts. It is very important for me in life.”

Maxim Likhachev

Maxim Likhachev was born and raised in Moscow where he continues to live today. His love for music began early as a student where he focused on wind instruments. He learned to play the euphonium and its variants as well as various percussion instruments, but his heart centered on the trombone of which he is known for. His talent led him to play in a children's brass band and ensemble with a choir and choreography. He entered the musical institute majoring in trombone and focusing on classical music in preparation for a spot in a symphony orchestra. While studying his musical plans abruptly changed the day he was invited to play in a rock band. He was hooked and he never looked back. Along the way Maxim was introduced to the sounds of the American band Chicago from the early albums and he developed a love for the band and their style that is with him to this day. After graduating from the Moscow Music Institute of Gnesin, he played with many of Russia’s top bands and felt right at home performing studio session work as well. Since his graduation he has remained in rock music and travelled extensively performing in numerous festivals within Russia as well as many places in Europe. Maxim explains that when he got the call to join Leonid & Friends, he felt his dreams of many years had come true. “To play the music I have loved since my youth with an amazing cast of fellow musicians whom I love, and being led by an incomparable director, Leonid Vorobyev, I don’t know how things can get any better musically for me.“ His personal life is singing from the same song book as well. With his loving wife and 3 children by his side, Maxim is proof of what hard work will do for you. He began playing with Leonid & Friends nearly 3 years ago and has become a gem of the bands brass section. Many friends of the band favor Maxim and his “Magic Trombone”, and they’re sure there is plenty of magic left in his playing.
