Wu-Tang Clan rap star RZA pivots to ballet: 'People would call it leftfield - but it's right in my alley'

You'll find classical influences and samples throughout the Wu-Tang Clan's music, says RZA. Now, he has pushed his passion even further, composing a ballet score based on rediscovered notebooks he filled with lyrics as a teenager.

Wu-Tang Clan rap star RZA pivots to ballet

He is one of hip-hop's most influential voices, mastermind of the groundbreaking Wu-Tang Clan collective - as well as a solo star, producer, filmmaker and actor.

Now, US rapper RZA is turning his hand to classical with a symphonic ballet.

He began working on the record during the pandemic, inspired by the discovery of an old Tommy Hilfiger book bag stuffed with notebooks he had filled over five years from the age of 14; lyrics on life and love as a teenage Robert Diggs, who grew up in the housing projects of Brownsville, in Brooklyn, New York, and later Staten Island.

There was a story to be told, he felt. The obvious thing to do would be to turn the words into rap, the music he is best known for. But it evolved into something new.

all stars of hip hop 2023 tour dates

"I started reading through these lyrics and I'm recalling all the young love, the young exploration. The first time you had a drink or smoke. All this is written in my lyrics, like a lyrical diary... at first I thought I should rap it, right. Because I'm known as a rapper. But then I said, no, I should just write music to it."

Starting at his piano, the project became A Ballet Through Mud, a coming-of-age story told through music that delves into the complexities of love and the bonds of friendship - very different to the music most of RZA's fans will know him for. It was performed to a standing ovation by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and dancers from the Alvin Ailey dance theatre school on stage in Denver 2023. Now, RZA is releasing the score as his first classical album.

"I think I've definitely been a guy that's pushing the boundaries and trying to surprise people," he says. "Definitely, you know, people would call it leftfield for me. But it's not, it's right in my alley." He describes the work as a "natural creative evolution" and says he has always been "fascinated" by classical music and composers, inspired by everyone from Mozart, Beethoven and Bach to Leonard Bernstein, Duke Ellington, Sergei Prokofiev - who wrote the children's symphony Peter And The Wolf - and Quincy Jones's collaborations with Frank Sinatra.

"Looking at Peter And The Wolf and knowing every character, every animal in that ballet or suite had an instrument to match to it - the flute was the bird, the trombone was the wolf... I started learning then that you can take instruments and give them characters," he says. "As a movie composer, that philosophy got reinforced."

Rza has composed his first classical score, A Ballet Through Mud. Pic: Danny Hastings

The title, A Ballet Through Mud, is symbolic of his own life. He references his formative years in Staten Island, or Shaolin, as Wu-Tang rechristened it. "The mud is considered to be foul, dirty... you know, I'm RZA, I'm from the slums of Shaolin. But yet, out of the mud grows the lotus plant, considered pure, beautiful... so hopefully, you can go through the mud and come back up a lotus."

It tells the story of six young people with a theme of "youthful exploration", he says. "I thought about women in the sense of how men, that we are still kind of in the cave when it comes to our emotions, we're like cavemen." One of the characters isn't sure how to communicate with the girl he likes, he says. "It was from one of my lyrics... as a high school guy, I fell in love with some girl and was scared to tell her."

His fellow Wu-Tang Clan members are yet to hear the entire score, he says. "But we did a tour last year with Nas and if you came on my bus, you had to hear some [of this] music," he laughs. "But everybody who heard it, they said it sounds beautiful."

Of course, RZA isn't the first hip-hop star to embrace classical music. In July, Cypress Hill made their debut at the Royal Albert Hall in London , performing hits from their seminal album Black Sunday alongside the London Symphony Orchestra. That show happened to be inspired by an almost 30-year-old joke in The Simpsons, famous predictor of the future, but rappers B-Real and Sen Dog have long had classical influences.

"We started off as hip-hop artists, this is what we love to do, the roots of our existence," said B-Real ahead of the show. "But we've always challenged ourselves to be out of the box and do different things."

In recent years, ravers have also embraced the genre at classical tours by the likes of club favourites Ministry Of Sound and the Hacienda. And there has also been a metal crossover with the likes of Metallica performing releasing albums with the San Francisco Symphony - and even a Black Sabbath ballet .

RZA says there are parallels between hip-hop and classical. "If you listen to some of the Wu-Tang production you hear I bring in strings. You'll hear some of my production has incorporated classical samples." He cites famous examples of hip-hop sampling classical scores, such as Beethoven's Fur Elise in Nas's I Can.

The rapper began studying more himself when he scored his first film, Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai, starring Forest Whitaker, released in 1999. He went on to score other films, including Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill. "These types of ideas have been evolving in me through my progression of work," he says. "It's like it's in my blood now."

As we speak, RZA is working in post-production on his latest project, the upcoming film One Spoon Of Chocolate, which he has directed. Across music and film, he has never wanted to tie himself down to one genre or medium of art. In September, the Wu-Tang Clan play shows in Las Vegas - extra dates added to a residency billed as "more than a concert... a tribute to their prolific careers as individuals and as the most storied group in hip-hop history".

The most expensive album ever made

And earlier this year, their famous unique and rarely-heard 2015 record Once Upon A Time In Shaolin, the most expensive album ever made, made headlines once again as it went on display briefly as a piece of fine art in Australia. The album exists in a sole physical CD copy, created at the time as a statement on the value of music as streaming started to take over, and comes with a legal stipulation that the owner cannot publicly release the tracks until 2103.

The record was bought at auction for $2m (£1.5m at the time) by pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli in 2015, but was sold again by the US government to clear debts after he was jailed for defrauding investors. Earlier this year, about 500 fans got to hear the music - complete with a reported Cher cameo - at secret listening sessions.

The Wu-Tang Clan's RZA has composed a ballet score, A Ballet Through Mud

It has been a wild journey. "Some of its journey has taken me by surprise and I think rightfully so," says RZA. "To me, that album has a life of its own and that's something I wanted for it, in all reality. It was a statement that was supposed to breed conversation. You know, should music be devalued? Is there more value on it when you can't have it? Is music really considered a serious form of art by today's society?

"Because it was like that as I was growing up... to get up and save my coins and then get on a bus and go to a record store and get it and read it, the cover, and open it and put it on, and to hold it... so you don't get fingerprints on it. It is something we value. And now it's more like swipe, swipe, swipe, swipe, swipe. I always said that it was similar to an Egyptian sceptre, something that belongs in museums and art galleries. It ended up there this year and that had nothing to do with me, you know. I heard that people came from around the world, they flew in to hang out, you know. And I wasn't even there. It's like my son right now. He's over in college right now, hanging out with his buddies, and I don't know what's going on, he's just having his own life."

There is a part of him that would love to still be involved in some way, he says. But that was never the point. "There's always a piece of me on anything that I've created or been part of that, you know, you want it kind of for yourself - but it don't belong to you. It's created for the world. And whoever gets a chance to hear it and enjoy it and create their own memories with it... those memories won't belong to me."

For now, though, he is concentrating on his classical work. He hopes it will inspire young children to learn instruments and feel "it's cool to grab that violin or oboe".

He continues: "It's a certain type of brain stimulation that comes from this type of music creation. Hip-hop and rock music, or just say today's music, has been able to be created on a computer, and that's great, that's the power of an orchestra in your hand." But knowing how to play an instrument, he adds, enables you to be "more elaborate, more communicative - not cookie-cutter".

And after A Ballet Through Mud, there is more to come, he promises. "I'm not going to stop here. I've already started writing something for the future that I'm also fascinated with."

You heard it here first. RZA, the hip-hop legend - now adding another string to his bow.

CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

● July 12 – The CSO opens its 88th summer season at Ravinia with Alsop and two featured soloists, soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha* and pianist Michelle Cann.* In an evening of American music, the orchestra opens with Aaron Copland’s beloved classic Appalachian Spring followed by James P. Johnson’s Charleston, highlighting this early jazz piano leader’s influence and the iconic dance of the same name. Rangwanasha is in the spotlight for Samuel Barber’s evocative portrait of a small boy in the American South, Knoxville: Summer of 1915. The program wraps with a celebration of the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, with Cann at the keyboard making her CSO debut. ● July 13 – South African cellist-composer Abel Selaocoe* joins Alsop and debuts with the CSO performing his Four Spirits, which “takes the concerto format to thrillingly unprecedented places” (Bachtrack). Themes of ancestral wisdom, faith, and community permeate the program, as the piece is put in perspective alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s monumental Fifth Symphony and its distinct explorations of fate. ● July 19 – Conductor Ted Sperling joins the CSO with special guest vocalists to celebrate two iconic pop songwriters, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon. ● July 20 – Alsop and the CSO take the stage for Gustav Mahler’s final major work for orchestra, Symphony No. 9. Voted as the greatest symphony of all-time in BBC Music 2 Magazine, the evening-long work has beguiled audiences since its 1912 premiere by Bruno Walter and the Vienna Philharmonic. ● July 21 – Winner of the gold medal at the International Chopin Competition and recipient of many esteemed prizes, Japanese pianist Hayato Sumino* reunites with Alsop and makes his Ravinia and CSO debuts performing Fryderyk Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1. In the second half of the program, Alsop explores symphonic storytelling during the turn of the 19th century, leading the CSO in Richard Strauss’s tone poem Don Juan and Maurice Ravel’s choreographic symphony Daphnis et Chloé (Suite No. 2). ● July 25 – Mendelssohn's hit violin concerto, played by Augustin Hadelich^, is in the spotlight as Alsop leads the CSO. Also featured on the program are Bernstein’s joyous Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and Stravinsky's timeless Firebird Suite. Alsop conducts the orchestra in Holst’s The Planets, followed by a suite from Falkenberg’s The Moons Symphony. Audiences will see science come alive and hear from planetary scientists, including Astronaut Nicole Stott together with the composer, as they discuss how Falkenberg’s symphony offers new perspectives for humanity to contemplate our home in the cosmos. ● July 28 – Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship alum Carolyn Kuan leads this year’s Tchaikovsky Spectacular, complete with Ravinia’s signature cannons in the 1812 Overture. Making her CSO debut, she opens the program with the complete music from the first act of The Nutcracker. Desirée Ruhstrat also makes her CSO debut as the soloist for the cherished Violin Concerto. ● August 2 – Conductor Valentina Peleggi, another TACF alum, returns to Ravinia and the CSO, following a guest appearance during last summer’s Breaking Barriers Festival, to join with esteemed pianist Jorge Federico Osorio on Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto. Peleggi will also lead Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini and Respighi’s Pines of Rome. ● August 4 – Music director, conductor, and arranger Kevin Stites explores the music of legendary performer and film composer Henry Mancini for the annual Gala Benefit Evening. Curated and hosted by actor Rob Lindley, “Mancini at 100: The Music of Henry Mancini, from the big screen, to the small screen, to the stage and beyond” features Broadway vocalists Jessie Mueller* (Waitress, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), Norm Lewis* 3 (The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables), and Karen Mason* (Sunset Boulevard), with all three making their Ravinia and CSO debuts. ● August 9 & 11 – The CSO delves into operatic repertory as a semi-staging of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Idomeneo is conducted by Los Angeles Opera (and former Ravinia) Music Director James Conlon in the Martin Theatre. The work, set in Crete in 1200 BCE and telling a story from the Trojan War, shines light on a talented group of singers. Starring are tenor Matthew Polenzani as Greek king Idomeneo, soprano Andrea Carroll* as princess Ilia, and soprano Alexandria Shiner* as princess Elettra. ● August 10 – Conlon will lead an all-Mozart program with the CSO in the festival’s Pavilion between the opera performances. The program will feature both of the composer’s G-minor symphonies—the “little” No. 25, K. 183, and the “great” No. 40, K. 550—along with the Violin Concerto No. 5, welcoming James Ehnes as soloist on the violin. ● August 18 – Conductor Jonathan Rush, a frequent Ravinia guest in recent seasons and former assistant to Alsop, returns to the CSO podium. Chicago native Rachel Barton Pine takes the stage with Rush and the orchestra as the soloist for José White Lafitte’s Violin Concerto and Niccolò Paganini’s La Campanella

Latin Stars Bringing a New Sound to Hip-Hop

When hip-hop culture began spreading throughout New York, it naturally influenced the music of neighboring communities, particularly those with Latin and Caribbean roots. This created a path for famous New York rappers like Fat Joe and Angie Martinez, who have Puerto Rican origins. Reggaeton, a music style popularized in Puerto Rico, was influenced by Jamaican music, just like hip-hop. This intersection helped people like Daddy Yankee and Don Omar become acclaimed figures in the global music scene. Check out the following Latin singers and rappers that are bringing a new sound to hip-hop.

THE HIP HOP NUTCRACKER Will Return on National Tour to More Than 25 Cities

The production reimagines Tchaikovsky's 130-year-old ballet as a contemporary holiday dance spectacle.

LATEST NEWS

A holiday dance mash-up for the whole family during hip hop's 50th year! As artists, industry and fans celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop around the globe today, The Hip Hop Nutcracker ( www.hiphopnutcracker.com ) announced its 2023 tour to more than 25 U.S. cities. The production reimagines Tchaikovsky's 130-year-old ballet as a contemporary holiday dance spectacle with hip hop pioneer Kurtis "The Breaks" Blow, the first rapper to be signed by a major label in 1979, performing as the show's MC. Blow will also perform today with other legends at the HIP HOP 50 LIVE concert at Yankee Stadium.

"Hip Hop has evolved over 50 years into an increasingly diverse, global phenomenon with one of the most significant developments being the fusion of hip hop with other musical genres like classical music," says Blow who paved the way for generations of hip hop artists and fans after scoring the first certified gold record rap song in 1980. Blow is also responsible for "Christmas Rappin," acclaimed for being the first rap holiday song. "I'm so proud to be a part of this iconic dance show and am excited to introduce new generations to the magic of hip hop."

The Hip Hop Nutcracker has been performed more than 250 times in 70 cities and the secret to its success is the powerhouse cast of a dozen all-star dancers, an on-stage DJ and an electric violinist who turn the beloved Nutcracker score on its head. The re-mixed and re-imagined version of the classic story smashes hip hop dance and Tchaikovsky's timeless music together for a heart-stirring and inspirational holiday event that takes audiences on a journey celebrating love, community and the magic of the holiday season.

Just like the original, Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince go on a dream adventure battling a gang of mice, visiting the land of sweets and learning the lessons of the holiday season. Innovative digital graffiti and visuals transform the landscape of E.T.A. Hoffmann's beloved story from traditional 19th century Germany to the vibrant, diverse sights and sounds of contemporary New York City. Through the modern, self-expressive gaze of hip hop culture, the dynamic performers of The Hip Hop Nutcracker celebrate the magic of the entire holiday season on the most inclusive holiday of them all - New Year's Eve, a time for new beginnings.

Created in 2013 by Emmy winner Jennifer Weber (also Oliver nominated, and a two-time Tony nominee), who also directs and choreographs the show, and writer Mike Fitelson, the production has evolved into a masterpiece due to the creators' never-ending commitment to enhancing the production, and dancers who continue to raise the bar each year. The Hip Hop Nutcracker is executive produced by three-time Tony winner Eva Price .

No big deal, but Rick Ross let his fans know that they didn’t want to “miss out on the most anticipated hip-hop tour in HISTORY,” in an Instagram post on Wednesday (Sept. 8) announcing the blockbuster rebooted “Legendz of the Streetz” tour.

The 11-date outing that is slated to kick off on Sept. 30 in Augusta, Georgia will feature the Bawse sharing the stage with Jeezy , Gucci Mane , 2 Chainz , Fabolous, Boosie Badazz, Lil Kim, Trina and DJ Drama. The trek will hit Atlanta, Greensboro, Baltimore, New Orleans, Houston, Dallas, Miami, Jacksonville and Tampa before wrapping up in Memphis on Oct. 22.

Rick Ross Says He Was 'Just Smilin' About the Latest Kanye West & Drake Beef

The outing was originally slated to take place before the COVID-19 pandemic shut things down under the name “Feed the Streetz,” with a line-up that then included T.I. and Yo Gotti. Hours before the revived dates were revealed, Ross sat in with The Breakfast Club to weigh in on the latest beef between Drake and Kanye West, telling host Charlamagne Tha God that he just got a kick out of their back-and-forth.

“I was just enjoying it. I was smiling,” said Ross on Wednesday morning about the tit-for-tat  disses  and  leaks  that surrounded the recent releases of Kanye’s  Donda  album and Drake’s  Certified Lover Boy . “I never took none of that s— personal. Dudes rich, man. I don’t even think they trippin’ about that s—, man. I’m gonna just be honest, I don’t think they trippin’ about that s—!”

Celebrate 50 Years of Hip-Hop With These 5 Upcoming Concerts

See dj kool herc, run-dmc, the wu-tang clan and more perform live this summer..

50 Years Anniversary Hip-Hop Concerts Tours New York Forest Hills Stadium Mableton Ampitheatre Tickets Dates Yankee Stadium Wu-Tang Clan Doug E Fresh Mary J blige Rakim

Although the 50th anniversary of hip-hop is technically this October – in step with the first time that the “Father of Hip-Hop” DJ Kool Herc mixed records live at a Bronx party – celebrations have been underway since the beginning of the year. From books chronicling the “Golden Era” of New York’s mixtapes from decades past to a Brooklyn library exhibition historicizing Jay-Z’s career, the music industry is brimming with projects paying tribute to both hip-hop’s progenitors and today’s contemporary artists.

Perhaps the best way to celebrate 50 years of hip-hop, however, is to experience those making music history in real time. Over the next few months, a series of star-studded concerts and festivals are set to happen across the country, and while lots of rappers are holding their own solo concerts, a select few events will bring together defining artists and groups such as DJ Kool Herc himself, Run-DMC , the Wu-Tang Clan , Mary J. Blige and more.

The All Stars of Hip-Hop was an overall great concert. Unfortunately the venue is not designed for musical events so the sound quality was poor. The fact that the promoters were able to assemble 19 acts to perform on one stage in one evening is an amazing feat. Seeing The Get Fresh Crew reunited was great as Doug E Fresh proved he is the world’s greatest entertainer. Big Daddy Kane showed that he can still perform at a high level. MC Lyte gave an awesome performance with only a drummer a dj which showed her talent. KRS-ONE clearly demonstrated why he is a TRUE MC. He switched his playlist mid performance to meet the vibe of the audience. He seamlessly blended classics with thought provoking lyrics.

I've been to about 20 concerts and this was the best. KRS-One REALLY puts in the effort to make a good show. Way better than lazy Snoop Dogg by a factor of 10. Pay a bit extra to meet him before the show. He's super down to earth, cool guy and rather than 10% of an album price going to him, this actually gets into his pocket, showing your support and appreciate. I'll definitely go again next time he's around.
