A Front Yard Fit for a Doll

Modelled after the 1995 Dreamhouse, Bargain Block ‘s Evan and Keith had the task of making over the exterior of this 4,500 square foot Barbie mansion. A clean white exterior with hot pink and aqua blue accents, plus black and white striped shutter give it a perfect dollhouse look. And the pièce de résistance? The bright pink handle, complete with Barbie’s logo.

You Rang, Barbie?

For their toyetic feature, Evan and Keith created a pink flamingo water feature that leads up to that signature pink door, complete with ’90s Barbie phone as a doorbell.

Step in to ’90s Neon

The entryway, designed by  Married to Real Estate ‘s Egypt and Mike instantly transports you back to the electric 1990s. The front door is painted a glossy pink to mimic the look of plastic, which continues to the spiral staircase and the popular Memphis pattern of the decade can be seen on the front wall.

Speaking of that staircase, unlike most understated staircases, the Barbie Dreamhouse needed an impossibly eye-catching feature reminiscent of those from nearly every dollhouse. And peep those beautiful stained glass windows with Barbie profiles featuring a variety of diverse hairstyles.

The neon lights add a pop art element that speaks to their design decade and creates one of the most eclectic dining areas that we’ve ever seen.

Heading upstairs to Barbie’s bedroom, Jon and Kristina from Farmhouse Fixer  take you back to the ’80s. Stepping into the (obviously) pink space, you’re met with a retro Barbie stationary exercise bike that’s a life-size replica of the Barbie toy from that era. And check out those glitter ceilings !

The glam station is serving just the right posh ’80s energy, complete with glossy pink cabinetry, plush white carpet (because Kristina did not win the wall-to-wall bathroom carpet battle over Jon) and a light fixture that echos the bubbles that will surely fill the tub. And the most Barbie element of all is the oversized Barbie hairbrush fixed above the bathroom vanity .

A Darling Dressing Room

Christina On the Coast ‘s Christina and James Bender team up to give the Barbie Dreamhouse a dressing room and closet area that any fashionista would envy. They incorporated all the decades through their displays of some of Barbie’s most iconic outfits (life-sized!). They also included a seating area for the most comfortable dress-up time.

Outside the (Doll) Box Design

One of the standout elements of their design is this human-sized doll box where they’ve displayed the stunning patchwork gown — the 50th anniversary dress — on loan from Mattel. And they’ve also brought in the future with a hat conveyor belt along the ceiling, where Barbie’s various chapeaus spin on display.

For their toyetic element, they designed a pop-down screen so Barbie can video conference in to all her business calls.

St. cloud's 'barbie house' crowned ugliest house in america, gets major makeover.

Goodbye pink interiors, cramped spaces and cinder block walls. Hello light, bright and open spaces.

America watched Monday night as the "Barbie House" in St. Cloud was crowned the HGTV Season 5 "Ugliest House in America" and was transformed into a modern-day haven while giving nods to its former, quirky shell.

Host actress/comedian host Retta and designer Alison Victoria, armed with a television crew, came to the house to deliver the news that the homeowners, identified as Joe and Jack, were the winners of a $150,000 home renovation.

Being named the ugliest house is the ultimate compliment for homeowners who nominate their offbeat homes in the light-hearted television series in hopes of getting design help.

The house stood out from 15 homes across the country for having "every shade of pink imaginable with a miniature bathroom that can't even hold a bath ... walls and ceilings that make you look like you're serving time," Retta concluded during the Monday night episode. "Jack and Joe are receiving a get-out-of-jail-free card."

Designer Alison Victoria's approach? Updating without "stripping this house of the quirkiness."

That meant lightening the pink-painted and red-carpeted gathering spaces with mostly neutral colors, knocking down walls between rooms for better flow, adding a kitchen island, new cabinets and shelving and covering cinderblock walls with sheetrock, then using designer wallpaper and statement tiles as accents.

Victoria also created more square footage in the bathroom by taking out an unused closet, which made room for a bathtub and dual vanity. Double doors were added off a bedroom leading to the patio on the other side.

In addition to addressing the couple's space needs, Victoria had a few surprises up her sleeve. She decided to extend the al fresco spaces by adding a concrete pad with an outdoor kitchen and lounge area.

"There's no real outdoor space for them to hang out in, so I want to make this even bigger and better than they could have ever imagined," the designer said. While the team was at it, they painted the house's bright mint green exterior white.

The house still has plenty of personality. The house's former trademark mint green exterior now shows up in places such as the exterior doors. The pink counter in the kitchen was repurposed into side and coffee tables. And Victoria hired a local artist to paint the outdoor patio with a design that incorporated teal, black and gold – prominent colors of former spaces.

"We wanted to pay a little respect to the old house," she said.

During the televised reveal, the homeowners were overjoyed.

"This is more than I ever imagined a patio being for us ... they listened to what we wanted and went beyond," Jack said.

Retta, too, was also impressed by the former Barbie home's metamorphosis.

"I personally think this is your best work on the show," she said.

Victoria was clearly tickled to get such high praise from the show's host. "Really? I'll take it," she replied. "Thank you, that means a lot."

While social media may have nicknamed the abode the Barbie house, HGTV dubbed it "The Prison House" because of its cinder block construction and claustrophobic feel.

Either way, the home is neither Barbie house nor prison any longer.

"I think [we hit] that classy and funky vibe they're looking for," Victoria said.

Dreamhouse, Assemble: How Barbie Cast Barbie, Barbie, Barbie (and Ken)

Dreamhouse Assemble How ‘Barbie Cast Barbie Barbie Barbie

In Greta Gerwig ’s Barbie, every Barbie in Barbie Land is named Barbie, and they all live in their own Barbie Dreamhouses. What does it mean to be Barbie? Perhaps nobody understands the answer better than Lucy Bevan and Allison Jones, the casting directors responsible for filling the film’s candy-colored world with an ensemble of Barbies and Kens played by actors like Alexandra Shipp, Hari Nef, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, and Ncuti Gatwa —in addition, of course, to Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

Bevan and Jones were looking for a group of actors with different backgrounds, body types, and gender identities. They all had to be fun and funny, and they had to capture a certain guilelessness. “We needed actors who could get the fact that our Barbies only knew pleasant things,” Jones says. In order to sell the notion that every day in Barbie Land is a perfect day—that is, until it’s very much not—the Barbies needed to be “pure in thought and pure in emotion,” without a trace of bitterness or cynicism.

Bevan and Jones started working on Barbie in the bleak days of COVID lockdown, roughly a year into the pandemic. Gerwig reached out to Jones, who cast Lady Bird and is known for comedies like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Superbad; in turn, Jones recruited the London-based Bevan, whose CV includes Belfast and The Batman. “I loved working with Allison. Allison is the best casting person in comedy there’s ever been,” says Bevan, who is an organizational powerhouse. On that front, Jones says, “I’m terrible and Lucy’s fantastic.”

Aspiring Barbies and Kens treated auditions as a run-do-not-walk situation, because, per Jones, actors really want to work with Gerwig. “Simu Liu was dying to be a Ken, God bless him,” she says. Actors sent in self-tapes and did readings over Zoom. In certain cases, Gerwig wanted to talk to them before sharing the script, early versions of which included illustrations of archival Barbies and Kens. “She really wanted to get to know them as people. That was very important to her. On the key Barbie and Ken roles, she got a very good idea of what an actor was like from talking to them,” says Bevan.

For Bevan and Jones, one major casting surprise was Kingsley Ben-Adir, a British actor mostly known for dramatic roles who revealed his playful side during the audition process. “Not a big comedy résumé,” says Jones. “It’s always a joy when you can discover that somebody is funny.”

Ben-Adir’s Ken seems sweet and a little timid, in contrast to Liu’s competitive Ken, Scott Evans ’s bro-y Ken, and Gosling’s rather insecure Ken. “They were definitely really different, but they had to feel like a cohesive group. You wanted to cast people who were really going to get on and be great and enjoy it,” Bevan says. In this case, “enjoy it” means hamming it up in a Ken-on-Ken beach battle and performing a perfectly choreographed 1950s-inspired dance number. In their enthusiasm, several potential Kens wanted to audition shirtless. “We were like, ‘No, no, it’s not about that. You don’t have to do that,’” says Bevan.

Because of COVID constraints, Barbie ’s cast had to spend three months in London, where much of the movie was shot—a logistical factor, they say, that put performers like Bowen Yang, Dan Levy, and Ben Platt out of the running. “They were, I’m not kidding, really bummed they couldn’t do it,” says Jones. Even Allan—weird, pale Allan, the only Allan in Barbie Land—was a part that actors were heartbroken over. “Dear, dear Jonathan Groff was like, ‘I can’t believe I’m typing this, but I can’t do Allan,’” says Jones. ( Michael Cera, who wound up nabbing the part, is full of pathos and a desire to escape Barbie Land.)

There are no small roles in Barbie, from John Cena ’s brief moment as Mermaid Ken to legendary costume designer Ann Roth ’s appearance as a confident nonagenarian Robbie’s Barbie meets at a bus stop in the real world. “I tend to go for the very skilled comedy improv people whose reactions are priceless, and you remember them through the whole movie,” says Jones, citing Annie Mumolo, Lauren Holt, and Deb Hiett as performers who killed in roles that have just a few lines. For the more significant part of Barbie’s creator, Ruth Handler, Bevan and Jones cast Rhea Perlman from a short list. “She was very close to the real woman, which was important, to ground it in those scenes,” says Bevan.

Talking about Barbie, Bevan and Jones seemed to be glowing. Jones tells me that the mood in Los Angeles has been gloomy due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes—before we spoke, she had turned off the phones and electricity at her office in anticipation of a long break in her casting work—and that the movie’s joyfulness felt particularly important to her in this moment. It’s true: Barbie is smart and funny, a perfect treat for a weekend afternoon. And its joy doesn’t lie in only knowing pleasant things.

How Designer Allison Willson Built Her Family’s Dream Country House

Craftsmanship was the top priority for their agrarian escape.

Headshot of Kathryn O'Shea-Evans

On this fairytale ground, Willson and her husband plopped an Airstream trailer to live in while they designed their dream home. “We spent time getting to know where the sun is in the winter versus the summer and what happens with the wind at the place we wanted to build,” she recalls. “We found some ponds, cut some trails, and made it this beautiful place.”

They worked closely with their architect, the late James Pearson, to design a farmhouse that would take in all the lushness in a way that suited the native scenery. Pearson’s existing plan was long and linear, and Willson pushed for something that would feel “a little bit more intimate and cozy, even though the scale was similar,” she says. “I took that long line and chopped it up and turned it into a U, so the house turns back on itself.”

.css-17t1xj6:before{content:'“';display:block;font-size:7.5rem;line-height:1.1;font-family:Apparel,Apparel-roboto,Apparel-local,Helvetica,Arial,Serif;margin-bottom:-4rem;letter-spacing:-0.015rem;background-image:none;} .css-52268a{margin:0rem;font-size:2.0625rem;line-height:1.1;font-family:ApparelItalic,ApparelItalic-roboto,ApparelItalic-local,Georgia,Times,Sans-serif;letter-spacing:0.015rem;}@media(min-width: 48rem){.css-52268a{font-size:2.625rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 64rem){.css-52268a{font-size:2.625rem;line-height:1.1;}}.css-52268a em,.css-52268a i{font-style:italic;font-family:inherit;}.css-52268a b,.css-52268a strong{font-family:inherit;font-weight:bold;} The views help deliver that outdoor-feeling vibe.

One of the family’s favorite spaces to gather is the kitchen, where solid oak beams, vintage pendant lanterns from Jardin de France , and white oak cabinetry add to the storybook feel. The rubble-finished limestone walls, in particular, assist in making the new construction feel centuries-old. “Our architect liked to take one part of a house and make it a question mark: ‘Oh, is this an original old stone home?’” Willson says.

To continue that storied feel, Willson chose real stone instead of veneer, which meant extra legwork. “Since it’s chunky and heavy, it needed to be built in at the architectural stage and factored into the foundation. We had our kitchen archways and window walls built out 12 to 16 inches thick so that when you’re in the kitchen, you’re surrounded by these incredibly deep walls. And it does give a feeling like, Okay, this room has been here forever.”

Sneak Peek: See Inside the 'Immersive' Barbie Experience Touring North America Starting This Summer

“World of Barbie” debuts in Toronto this July and will stop in New York, Chicago, Dallas and other cities

allison barbie house tour

Visiting Barbie's Dreamhouse is now a reality!

Barbie fans of all ages will be able to walk into a human-size version of her imaginative world at "World of Barbie," an immersive experience that celebrates everything the iconic doll's universe has to offer. Entertainment company Kilburn Live partnered with Mattel to bring Barbie's neighborhood to cities across North America as part of a tour that kicks off this summer in Toronto. The attraction will stop in New York, Chicago and Dallas with more to come.

"World of Barbie," created by entertainment company Kilburn Live and Mattel , kicks off this summer in Toronto before touring around North America, and will allow fans to walk down Barbie's neighborhood streets. Visitors can explore several immersive play sets, including a life-size version of Barbie's bubblegum pink camper van. The vehicle even includes a hammock to lounge on, bringing a signature feature of the toy campers to life.

Other event highlights include strutting down the pink carpet, which features a row of six giant doll boxes with themes like "Western" and "Fashionista" that guests can climb into to snap a photo.

The real show-stopper is Barbie's iconic dreamhouse. According to Mark Manuel, CEO of Kilburn Live, the life-size house will transport guests to Malibu.

Not only can visitors sit in Barbie's modern living room and kitchen, but they can also play outside on a patio complete with a fake pool. And, of course, fans can walk into Barbie's closet, full of her different career-themed clothing and outfits inclusive of her style over the years.

What makes "World of Barbie" stand out is that the experience is meant to be enjoyed across generations, says Manuel: "Stepping into Barbie's real life dreamhouse, being transported to Malibu, sitting down in her camper van…there's no age limit to that."

There's also an element of nostalgia in Barbie's real-life neighborhood for grown-up fans. "You also have an older generation who's going to walk through and be brought back to their childhood days," he adds.

"World of Barbie" even includes a museum that chronicles Barbie's development over the decades. Julie Freeland, Senior Director of Location-Based Entertainment at Mattel, says that part of the attraction really plays into the universal connection fans have with Barbie.

"I travel all over the world, and people have their own stories of the favorite dreamhouse they had when they were a kid or their favorite doll that they grew up with. And they pass that on to their kids," she tells PEOPLE.

Barbie's neighborhood also includes multiple play sets that are career driven — from a TV studio to a space center and fashion studio. There's even a hands-on science lab where visitors can perform experiments. The purpose of the play sets isn't just purely fun. They're meant to help young kids explore and cultivate their interests.

"Barbie has had so many firsts, and has had so many different careers," Freeland said. "We hope that they leave truly feeling inspired and feeling like [they] can do anything."

"World of Barbie" kicks off in Toronto this summer before touring U.S. cities. Visit theworldofbarbie.com for more information.

You Can Now Visit a Real-Life Barbie Dreamhouse in Malibu

You Can Now Visit a RealLife Barbie Dreamhouse in Malibu

With less than a month go until the release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie —the hotly-anticipated Margot Robbie -starring blockbuster is set for release on July 21—the team at Airbnb has taken over a Malibu mansion and revamped it as the Barbie Dreamhouse of your, well, dreams. According to Airbnb, the story of how this hot pink paradise (which was first spotted by social media sleuths from aerial footage over the weekend) begins with Barbie heading away for the weekend and handing over the keys to her beloved Ken, who took it upon himself to list the property for a few lucky visitors to experience via the home rental platform. (So … thoughtful?)

You Can Now Visit a RealLife Barbie Dreamhouse in Malibu

As such, there are not only all of the mod-cons you might expect from a Barbie Dreamhouse —an infinity pool, a bar, a home gym with ocean views, and enough pink to put Pepto-Bismol out of business—but a few of Ken’s touches, too. Notably, you can “feel the Kenergy” by trying out the skates and surfboards he might have left around the house. You can channel your inner cowboy with a line dance on the light-up disco dance floor, or simply laze by the pool and top up your Ken-worthy tan. For the truly committed, you can even dress up like Ken, thanks to a fully-stocked closet bursting with beach-ready looks.

You Can Now Visit a RealLife Barbie Dreamhouse in Malibu

While a stay at the Dreamhouse is available free of charge—Airbnb is offering a handful of guests the chance to enjoy one-night stays around the movie’s release at the end of July—there’s a small catch: To earn the chance to book Ken’s bedroom, you’ll have to put in your request on July 17 at 10 a.m. PST on the dot via the Airbnb website , where the competition to secure a stay is sure to be fierce. It’s time to learn for yourself whether life in plastic really is that fantastic.

'World of Barbie' experience making US debut this spring in Los Angeles

Tarah Chieffi

Barbie's Dreamhouse is no longer a dream: Beginning this spring, you'll be able to step through the doors to her Malibu home and find out if life in plastic is really as fantastic as it seems. The World of Barbie, a partnership between Mattel and branded live entertainment group Kilburn Live, is an immersive experience that transports Barbie fans into Barbie's pastel pink world.

After a wildly successful run in Toronto, the World of Barbie is launching stateside. Tickets go on sale March 8 for World of Barbie's U.S. debut in the Los Angeles area at Santa Monica Place on April 14.

allison barbie house tour

While there, you can lounge in Barbie's perfectly decorated living room and walk the pink carpet; you can also try on some of Barbie's fashionable personalities by stepping into life-size doll boxes with themes like "Western" and "fashionista." Outside, you can lounge on Barbie's patio and splash in the pool.

It is plastic, so no diving is allowed.

allison barbie house tour

Not only will you be able to walk through Barbie's home, but you'll also have a chance to tour her very pink camper van and explore areas themed to a few of Barbie's many careers — including newscaster, lab scientist and astronaut. You can enjoy snacks from a Barbie-themed cafe and visit a museum that chronicles Barbie's history and evolution.

Special events will occur throughout World of Barbie's Los Angeles run. For instance, on Pink Carpet Night, guests are encouraged to don their best pink outfits. They can also enjoy Movie Days with Barbie animated films as well as Sips After Sunset nights with live music and themed cocktails.

allison barbie house tour

The photo opportunities are endless, but World of Barbie's creators hope visitors come away with more than selfies.

Their goal is for kids to be inspired to dream big like Barbie — the only doll in history who has held down simultaneous careers as a pilot and a rock star and managed to look flawless doing both. Adults who grew up with Barbie can reminisce about the doll they've loved since childhood and admire how she has evolved throughout the years.

allison barbie house tour

Tickets for Los Angeles World of Barbie dates start at $34 for adults and $26 for children. On the World of Barbie website, you can sign up for exclusive access to advance ticket sales and be the first to know if Barbie packs up her pink suitcase for a visit to your town.

Boris Pasternak's museum house

Guided tour of Pasternak's museum housein Peredelkino village

Pasternak’s “important achievement both in contemporary lyrical poetry and in the field of the great Russian epic tradition" was honored with a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. For many readers outside Russia, Pasternak is known mainly as the author of the touching historical novel Doctor Zhivago written in 1957. The novel as a whole communicates the haphazard, uncertain and chaotic quality of life caused by the Russian Revolution and the heroic case of quiet humanism demonstrated by a single person.

Pasternak’s translations of Georgian poets favored by Joseph Stalin probably saved his life during the purges of the 1930’s. However, the individualistic Pasternak was not suited to the Soviet artistic climate when art was required to have a clear socialism-inspired agenda and so Russian publishers were unwilling to print Pasternak’s novel. In fact, Doctor Zhivago first appeared in Italy in 1957.

Pasternak won his Nobel Prize the following year. Despite Pasternak politely declining his Nobel Prize quoting: “because of the significance given to this award in the society to which I belong”, the award nevertheless spread his fame well beyond Russia. He ended his life in virtual exile in an artist's community in Peredelkino village. His last poems are devoted to love, to freedom and to reconciliation with God.

Pasternak was rehabilitated posthumously in 1987. In 1988, after being banned for three decades, "Doctor Zhivago" was published in the USSR. In 1989 Pasternak's son accepted his father's Nobel medal in Stockholm.

Pastenak loved his house in Peredelkino, the house and surrounding nature featuring in his poetry. The poet considered the cycle of poems "Peredelkino", which he completed in the spring of 1941, to be his best work. The poet spent the first difficult months of the war in Peredelkino; he completed the novel "Doctor Zhivago" here, wrote the Lara poems and translated Shakespeare and Goethe. It was in this house that he learned he was to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature on October 23rd 1958. He died here on May 30 1960.

The house in Peredelkino only acquired the status of a museum in 1990, thirty years after the poet's death and a century after his birth. The museum has fully preserved the environment and atmosphere of the house where Boris Pasternak lived and worked. The director of the museum is Elena Pasternak, grandaughter of Boris Pasternak.
