In this post, I’ll tell you how to get the best Netherlands SIM card for your European trip.

I always get an eSIM card when I travel outside of Europe. I never use my plan from home (use-like-as-at-home). This is always more expensive than getting a temporary travel sim card.

Using a cell phone is super handy for directions, buying (entrance) tickets, and showing your e-tickets on trains and at museums. But also for things like making restaurant reservations.

A cheap EU data bundle will save you significant money, and a SIM card solution is less cumbersome than a pocket Wi-Fi device.

Is it worth it to get an Amsterdam SIM card in 2023? Can’t I use free Public WIFI?

You can find WIFI hotspots anywhere in Holland, from hotels to trains. Most often, they’re free to use as well.

However, there are drawbacks . First, you need to connect to each of them, accept policies, et cetera. That takes time and becomes cumbersome quickly.

Some require personal information. And some networks might not be as fast as you need. There is also a safety concern when using public systems.

And apart from all that… If you’re on the go and need immediate directions on Google Maps , a public WIFI hotspot doesn’t help you.

I strongly advise getting a SIM Card for the Netherlands only or Europe. You’ll always have data available , and it is much safer.

How Good Is Mobile Phone Coverage in the Netherlands?

Extremely good, and this is not an understatement. Holland ranks in the top 10 countries with the best mobile coverage in the world .

You’re in for a treat if you come from a country like the US, Canada, the UK, or Germany. Your phone will keep working even outside of built-up areas.

5G is available nationwide at an average speed of 40 Mbps, faster than most home connections, and 4G is also widely available for phones not yet ready for 5G.

Finding a location with poor reception in this country is challenging, except maybe in the middle of a forest or a National park.

But still, you probably will be able to pick up a signal just strong enough to support a call or to use the internet at a slower speed.

How Much Does Mobile Internet In The Netherlands Cost?

If you’re doing it wrong, A LOT! (That is using your home plan if you travel from outside of Europe). But if you’re smart about this, it can be affordable!

Bundles start from $5 or less, depending on whether you stay in the Netherlands/ Amsterdam only or you also travel to other European countries (then you can get a card that covers all)

I recommend a minimum bundle of 10GB because mobile data goes much faster than you think. Get at least 20GB if you plan to watch video on the road.

But more about that later. Let’s first cover how it can quickly go very wrong :

Telecom providers grossly overcharge for international roaming. When I travel to the US, I am hit with a $2-a-minute charge to make a phone call, even within the US! And I’d also need to pay $2 for every MB I use. That is not a typo: MB, not GB. There are 1024 MBs in a GB. Yes, that much!

That comes down to over $2000 per GB! Yikes… A GB should never cost more than $10 and can easily be purchased for $2-$3 if you get the proper travel SIM card .

When you don’t, you’ll likely face similar roaming charges from your home carrier while visiting Europe.

3-1 Sim Card to use in Amsterdam, Holland, and the rest of Europe.

Do You Need A Travel SIM Card If You’re From the EU or the UK?

You don’t need to change anything if you’re from the EU . There are no roaming charges for EU sim card owners. You can use your plan just as you can at home.

This is NOT the case for UK SIM card holders . Since the UK is no longer part of the European Union, roaming charges will most likely be added to your bill. Check with your provider before you travel.

Find A Place To Stay In Amsterdam

Find accommodation in Amsterdam for the lowest prices on your favorite platform. What’s great about this map is that it shows both Hotels , as VRBO rentals (like AirBNB but with lower costs).

Update your (intended) travel dates for accurate prices . TIP: Zoom out on the map (-) in the bottom right corner. This will show more options and availability.

I’m Traveling From Outside Of Europe. What Options Do I Have?

You have multiple options when you travel from outside of Europe , like from the United States, Canada, Australia, or any other non-European country. But not all of them are created equal. Let’s break them down ( from expensive to cheap ):

Use your home carrier (with a travel plan)
Get a Global SIM
Get a Local / European SIM card (best option)

Option 1: Using Your Home Carrier (Travel) Plan in Europe

Using your home carrier while traveling in Europe , including the Netherlands, is possible. If you don’t take any additional upgrades to your plan, this will be a very costly option, as you read in my example above.

For example, in the US, AT&T will charge just over $2 per minute/MB/text for calls and data usage overseas. That gets VERY expensive VERY quickly!

Most carriers, however, offer international travel add-ons for your plan. This will reduce the cost a bit, but still, it’s expensive.

For example, Verizon and AT&T (in the US) charge you $10 daily to use your home plan overseas. If you’re on a 10-day trip, that’s a $100 charge. Are you going away for three weeks? That’s a whopping $210 added to your phone bill per phone!

You can also buy international bundles . AT&T, for example, has a $70 30-day travel plan, limiting you to 2GB of data—a limit you reach much quicker than you might think. Plus, $70 for 2GB is still 35 dollars per GB. You can do much better than that.

The travel SIM card I recommend charges $37 (half) for 10GB (you get 5x as much) in Europe. And if you need a SIM card for the Netherlands only, you can get 20GB (10x as much) for only $30.

PS : You can still keep your phone number (I explain the how-to below)

Option 2: Get a Global SIM card

Often, in airline magazines (or while doing a Google search), you’ll find Global SIM cards . The benefit of these is that you’ll have one card for all your international travel. But rates are higher than buying a local SIM card.

I wouldn’t buy a global SIM.

Option 3: Get a Local / European SIM Card

As you might have guessed, this is the best option for most people (by far). If you buy a local Amsterdam SIM card , you often get the lowest rates plus the most data for your money.

However, there is a catch in Holland:

In most countries, it’s as simple as buying a local SIM card at the airport or a store. But not here. Most local SIM cards you buy in a store or at the airport are a hassle to activate as a foreigner. There is a better option.

Let’s dig in (from expensive to cheap):

Buying a card when you arrive at Schiphol Airport from a kiosk
Buying a SIM Card in the Netherlands, like in a supermarket
Buy a European prepaid SIM card online before arriving in Amsterdam (the best choice).

1. Buy a SIM Card at Schiphol Airport

Many tourists (including me) buy a local SIM card immediately after arrival in the country we’re traveling to.

Doing that here in the Netherlands is not such a good idea. The Dutch are very good at creating a system that is only easy to use for locals.

For example, you must register with a Dutch address to receive the credit promised with your card. And sometimes, you even need to provide a Dutch bank account number. It’s not very helpful if you’re visiting.

Save yourself the trouble and get a European SIM card before leaving home (option three below).

Here are some example prices for physical cards in stores, but note you need a Dutch address and bank account to claim these bundles. Great if you’re an expat settling in the Netherlands, but not when you’re just visiting. You also need to be aware your number will change to a local number:

Vodafone prepaid: 2GB €9 or 10 GB €29 (cheapest option for a local Dutch SIM card)
KPN prepaid: 1GB €9.99
Odido prepaid: 1GB + 10 minutes €10

WARNING: Whatever you do. Do not fall for the Lebara SIM card stands at the airport. They’re everywhere in the arrival areas. This company does not offer good value for money , and the salespeople at these booths are pushy. Ignore them.

I noticed other blogs (they are not local) advising these SIM cards. It is not a good deal. They will charge you a ridiculous €24.95 for 1 GB of data or €34.95 for 2 GB.

Compare that to $37 for 10GB in the EU or $30 for 20 GB in the Netherlands-Only in the below-mentioned deal .

2. Buying a SIM Card in the Netherlands in a Supermarket

You can also buy a Dutch SIM card at most supermarkets. But you would get the same deal as at the airport in a kiosk. That is not a good deal, plus the same hassle to activate if you’re not a local.

The other downside of getting a Dutch prepaid SIM card is that you’re tied to one provider. Sometimes, coverage can be spotty with one provider but good with another. With the options below, you can roam on different Dutch networks .

3. Buy a Prepaid European SIM card for Holland Online (best choice)

You can also purchase a European eSIM card before you leave home. This will give you the best price and is the best option ! You load it to your phone and activate it when you get here. Easy as that!

Check here if your phone is capable of eSIM , most modern phones are.

What Is The Best Prepaid SIM Card In Holland For Tourists?

I just updated my recommendation on October 2, 2023, because the plans I recommend now include Personal Hotspot sharing . And that is a big deal.

Most other providers for mobile SIM cards, like SimOptions (which I recommended before) and Holafly, which you see recommended on other sites, offer great deals at first sight. But there is a catch .

They don’t allow Hotspot sharing, also known as tethering . And that is important. Because what if you want to go online with your tablet or laptop? Or share your connections with other people in your family or travel partners. Well, with those cards, you’re out of luck.

But the provider I recommend – Airalo – is well established and offers Personal Hotspot sharing (tethering) at no extra charge!

You can get bundles from 1GB (for $5 or less) that you can easily top up in their app ( download the app here ). But I recommend getting a bundle of AT LEAST 10GB for a comfortable surfing experience and the best price per GB.

The cheaper low-data bundles are relatively expensive per GB, run out of data quickly, and are valid only for seven days. The larger-sized bundles (10, 20, or 30GB) are valid for 30 days and allow for normal surfing , just like you do at home.

If you’re traveling to more than one EU country or the UK (for example, you combine a trip to Amsterdam with Paris or London ), or you have an airport transfer in another EU country, I recommend getting an eSIM card that works across the EU.

Otherwise, the NL-only card is just as good and more affordable.

Important: this option is only for phones that support eSIM ( get the list of eSIM-ready devices here ). Your phone must also be unlocked (if you’re not sure if your phone is locked, contact your carrier first).

Is There A Drawback To Getting A European SIM Card in Holland?

With eSIM, not so much. Most modern phones support eSIM , which doesn’t require changing your physical card.

You can still use your original phone number (see below) if you want to.

An eSIM acts as a secondary SIM card. You can use both simultaneously for different tasks (like voice and internet).

How Does An Amsterdam eSIM card work

After your purchase, you can follow easy-to-follow instructions to load it to your phone.
Usually, it’s as simple as scanning a QR code in your confirmation.
Your card is then added to your phone as a 2nd sim card
In your phone’s settings under Celluar, you can change which SIM card to use when. (instructions are provided)

How About Using My Phone Number?

There is a simple solution to this “problem”:

Once you arrive, you can activate your eSIM card in your phone’s (mobile network) settings.
You then set which SIM card and number you want to use for calls and which one for data usage (internet)
Set your original SIM to voice if you want to continue receiving voice calls on that number. And the travel SIM card to Data for browsing the web.

You save most if you turn your original SIM card off and use voice over the internet to call for free with your travel eSIM card, for example, by using Whatsapp, Facetime, Skype, or Google Meet.

You can also get a Google or Skype phone number and forward your number to this number before you leave home. This way, you don’t have to tell people to call you on WhatsApp. Instead, you can accept incoming calls via Google Voice or Skype app on your European SIM data connection.

This last solution allows you to stay available on your original number without expensive roaming charges.

How Much Data Do You Need While Traveling?

Answering this question is not easy because, of course, it’s very personal. If you use your phone to check your email, send a social media post, and use Google Maps regularly, you will be okay with a 10GB plan . You can always top up when needed ( get the app here ).

If you want to use social media like you’re used to, send photos to your loved ones every day to multiple people, use Google Maps all the time, and listen to music or watch a video on Youtube or Netflix, you can better get a plan of 20GB (at least).

Do I Need an eSIM For Every Person (Phone) In Our Travel Party?

Theoretically, you don’t because tethering ( mobile hotspot sharing ) is allowed. However, I recommend you do.

If you don’t, the person who has the travel eSIM card activated must allow the connection every time. That person must also always be present.

The connection will be broken if one person wants to stay in the hotel and the other wants to go out.

With all these incoming connections, it will also be tough on the host’s phone’s battery . You better always have a battery pack connected when you do this.

A better option is that everyone has their own data bundle and surfs the web freely without depending on another person’s phone. And with data prices much lower than travel plans at home, it’s still affordable.

What are the primary mobile service providers in the Netherlands?

The primary mobile service providers are KPN, Vodafone, and Odido. KPN is generally considered to have the best network in terms of speed and coverage. KPN is usually a little more expensive. As I recommend in this article, you can roam on the KPN network without extra costs if you have purchased a European travel SIM card . Just select it from your phone’s network settings.

Is my smartphone compatible with Dutch networks?

Networks in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and the rest of Europe primarily use the 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, and 2600MHz wavelengths. For 5G, this is primarily 700MHz and 1800MHz . Most modern phones are compatible with these frequencies. Ensure that your phone is unlocked or can add an eSIM .

Can I use my local Amsterdam SIM card to roam in other European countries?

It depends! When you buy a European eSIM card , you can travel across Europe and the UK and use the internet the same. If you go to Paris or Venice or on a River cruise, you can still use your card precisely the same for the entire trip. If you stay in Amsterdam (or the Netherlands only), you can save some money if you buy an NL-only eSIM card .

Netherlands sim cards and free EU roaming

Free EU roaming means that you can use your data, voice and text allowance on Netherlands sim cards all over Europe. No borders, no roaming fees! Therefore you can use a France sim card in Holland and a Greece sim card in Denmark without any extra charges. Good thing about Netherlands sim cards are that they all include free EU data roaming.

Arriving Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has very fast, reliable and free WiFi for everyone. Well done! That is at least what I call a warm welcome to my country.

After disembarking the plane you will end up in the main airport between all departing passengers. There is no separate access for arriving and departing passengers. Which means Amsterdam Airport is very busy, but it also means you have access to all shops, facilities and restaurants before you go through customs and pick up your luggage.

The sign posting is very clear and if you follow the signs you will get to passport control first and then directly behind passport control there are the luggage belts.

At the luggage belts there are ATM's, airline service desks and public transport ticket machines.

There are three Arrival Halls: 1, 2 and 3 and depending on the airline and the origin of your flight you will end up in one of them. Every Baggage Claim hall has one sliding door into the arrival hall.

Once you get to the arrival hall there are loads of shops, supermarkets, (fast food) restaurants, bars and convenience stores.

Where to buy a sim card at Amsterdam Airport

We always think we have everything so damn well organized here in our small country. But where are the mobile interner operator stores at Schiphol? Where is Vodafone, KPN or Odido? Why is there no official phone store at Amsterdam Airport?

All info and prices below are updated as per June 2024. Prices are in Euros and €1 EUR = $1.09 USD and $1 USD = €0.92 EUR.

When you walk from Arrivals 3 straight into the main hall of Schiphol Airport there is something like a trolley or tiny little kiosk of L.Mobi Mobile. Here you can buy your prepaid sim card for the Netherlands. See the prices below.

For €40 EUR ($44 USD) you get 15 GB data and unlimited calls in The Netherlands. Only physical prepaid sim cards are available, no e-sim cards.

For example an Ireland prepaid sim card gives you 20 GB data for €20 EUR ($22 USD), sim cards at Amsterdam Airport are expensive compared to other European countries.

Service Point Store

Between Arrivals 3 and 4 there is another place to buy a prepaid sim card at Amsterdam Airport and it is called Service Point. There is a price sheet available when you walk in. It is a pretty busy store, not just for sim cards, so expect a little less service here.

However, it is a very easy conclusion that the sim cards here are more expensive as you only get 10 GB data for €40.

Airport Telecom

Now there is finally a proper place to buy a sim card at Amsterdam Airport, but the offers aren't that great.The Airport Telecom store is located between Arrivals 1 and 2. They sell sim cards from multiple operators like Vodafone and Lycamobile.

These are the up to date prices for an Amsterdam airport sim cards as per June 2024. For €40 EUR ($44 USD) you get 12 GB data. A simple comparison tells us that this is also less value for money than other offers we have seen.

Unfortunately buying a sim card at Amsterdam Airport is not great for if you are traveling onwards in Europe. Best Amsterdam Airport sim card in 2024

Although rather expensive the best sim card at Amsterdam Airport can be bought from the L.Mobi Mobile shop nearby Arrivals 3. You pay €40 EUR ($44 USD) and get 15 GB data.

As said before buying a sim card at Amsterdam Airport is expensive and not recommended. For those looking to get an e-sim card, you can only order them online. You can not buy an e-sim card at Amsterdam Airport as of June 2024.

Having a phone with reliable high-speed mobile data while traveling around the Netherlands is required these days because much of life in the Netherlands requires mobile data—you’ll need a phone to access mobile train tickets, restaurant menus, museum/event tickets, Google Maps, UBER/taxis, and much more.

In this guide, I’ll cover everything you need to know about buying a SIM Card in the Netherlands and how to buy the best high-speed mobile data plan for a fair price.

How To Buy A Prepaid SIM Card In The Netherlands With Mobile Data

There are two main options when it comes to buying a SIM Card for For The Netherlands:

The Easy Way— Buy a SIM Card Before Your Travel : Buying a SIM card before you arrive in the Netherlands is a little more expensive but it’s much more convenient (and you have mobile data as soon as you arrive in the Netherlands).
As a general rule, it’s easier to pre-buy a prepaid data plan if you’re visiting for less than two weeks but a local SIM card will be cheaper for longer trips.

UPDATE: Most new phones are eSIM compatible—these are MUCH more convenient than physical SIM cards because they don’t require you to install a new physical SIM card. You simply buy the prepaid eSim data plan, scan a QR code that’s sent to your email to install the digital “card”, and you’re ready to go. Where To Buy A Prepaid SIM Card For The Netherlands Before You Travel (i.e. The Easy Way)

The easiest way to get mobile data for your phone is to buy a European SIM card before you depart. There are a few data plans aimed at visitors/non-residents. These are a bit more expensive than buying a SIM card in the Netherlands—but there is zero hassle (no tracking down a mobile phone shop, no registering your SIM card, no having to deal with people who don’t speak English, etc).

All you need to do is install the SIM card into your phone once you’re in the Netherlands and it will automatically connect to a local mobile data provider—as an added bonus, the European Union banned data roaming charges so any European data plan will work in any EU country.

There are a number of different mobile data plans available at SimOptions.com (I’ve used them in the past) and they’ll ship the SIM card to you before your trip.

For reference, you will probably spend an extra $15-$20 over the course of a two-week trip if you prepurchase your SIM card vs waiting to buy in the Netherlands—I think the extra cost is worth the convenience.

Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM Card

I believe that the Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM Card is probably the best all-around, full-featured SIM card because it offers a lot of data for a good price—and it includes plenty of worldwide calls and text.

Additionally, Orange is one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so they have a vast network throughout most of Europe (which isn’t always the case with smaller European carriers).

The main drawback is the 14-day validity period—which doesn’t matter if your trip is less than two weeks. That said, you can buy an extra 10GB of credit after the two weeks are up for around $25.

Orange Holiday Zen Prepaid SIM Card

For lighter data users, I like the $30 Orange Holiday Zen SIM Card —it gives you 8GB of data for 14 days but otherwise, it’s essentially the same plan as the Orange Holiday Europe SIM .

Three UK is another large European mobile carrier and their PAYG AIO15 plan is a good value for people who don’t need the 20GB offered by the Orange Holiday Europe plan. I like how the plan has a validity period of 30 days so it’s good for longer trips.

How To Buy A SIM Card In The Netherlands

Buying a prepaid SIM Card in the Netherlands is a fairly straightforward process since they’re widely available—the largest inconvenience is finding a retailer and then picking which plan you want. You’ll also have to deal with not having service until you find the SIM retailer.

That said, it’s easiest to just buy the Orange Holiday Europe plan since it works in any EU country.

Where To Buy SIM Cards in the Netherlands

The Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and Train Stations: You’ll find a handful of shops and kiosks selling SIM Cards at the Schiphol Airport and in most large train stations. However, you’ll pay a premium since they’re targeting data-hungry tourists so expect to pay anywhere from €35-€60 for not much mobile data.
Carrier-Specific Retail Locations: Major mobile carriers like Vodafone and T-Mobile have storefronts in most city centers that sell their SIM cards. This is your best bet if you need technical support and you’ll typically find better deals than at the airports and train stations.
Third-Party Mobile Phone Shops: Many independent mobile phone shops sell a range of phone plans from multiple companies. Employees might be able to offer some help getting set up but service probably won’t be as good as carrier-specific shops.
Newsstands, Tobacco Shops, Vending Machines, etc: You can find SIM cards in multiple smaller shops and grocery stores that sell super cheap SIM cards but don’t expect any customer service.

The Best Mobile Data Companies In The Netherlands

Now let’s take a look a the largest and best mobile companies in the Netherlands to give you an idea of who you should check out if you want to buy your SIM card once you arrive in the Netherlands.

The three major mobile providers in the Netherlands are KPN, Vodafone Nederland, and T-Mobile. There are a few other smaller providers but they all lease traffic from the providers above. You’ll also have to visit an actual retail location (typically in the city center) to buy any of the plans from the major carriers.

KPN Netherlands SIM Card Data Plans

KPN is one of the largest Dutch mobile providers offering a wide range of prepaid data plans. Their monthly plans range from €20-€25/month but they charge a €25 activation fee so they’re not ideal for short-term visitors.

Vodafone Netherlands SIM Card Data Plans

Vodafone Netherlands has multiple mobile data plan options—notably prepaid monthly plans that range from 2GB to 10GB/month and unlimited data bundles sold in 1,3 or 7-day increments. I don’t believe they charge an activation fee so that’s a pus.

T-Mobile Netherlands SIM Card Data Plans

T-Moble Netherlands is the other largest mobile provider in the Netherlands but most of their plans are designed as yearly subscriptions. They do have a €2.95/day plan that gives unlimited data (calls and SMS texting not included) but you get limited data if you use the plan outside the Netherlands. You’ll also have to activate the plan inside the Netherlands.

FAQ: PREPAID SIM CARDS FOR THE NETHERLANDS

Here is some helpful background info on mobile data plans so you can better understand how mobile data service works in the Netherlands.

BRING YOUR PASSPORT

I recommend that you bring your passport with you when buying a SIM card within the Netherlands. They might also ask for a local address but you can use your hotel or rental apartment’s address.

EUROPEAN UNION-WIDE COVERAGE

A law was recently passed in the EU which banned mobile carriers from charging roaming fees within the EU—which means you can use a SIM card you bought in the Netherlands and use it in Spain, France, etc. without paying any extra fees. This is great for travelers because you can use one plan everywhere.

Here are the countries/areas where there is no data roaming: Andorra, Azores, Aland islands, Austria, Balearic Islands, Belgium, Canary Islands, Cyprus, Corfu, Crete, the Cyclades, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Faeroe Islands, Finland, France mainland, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Guernsey, Hungary, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Jersey, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg. Madeira, Malta. Isle of Man, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Rhodes, Romania, Spain, United Kingdom, San Marino, Sardinia, Sicily, Slovakia, Switzerland, Sweden, Vatican

Technically Switzerland and the UK are not part of the EU, and while many plans still give you service there, many don’t so read the fine print if those countries are part of your trip.

YOUR PHONE MUST BE UNLOCKED

Some mobile carriers (mainly in the US, Australia, and New Zealand) “lock” their phones so they’ll only work on that carrier’s network—this typically applies if you have a plan that includes a free phone with a multi-year contract. You’ll need to contact your carrier and have them “unlock” your phone so it will accept a third-party SIM card.

In the US, carriers are required to unlock phones if the customer requests it but it’s rarely unlocked by default. That said, a few companies still make customers jump through hoops to unlock their phones so don’t put this off until the last minute or you could be out of luck.

A NEW SIM CARD GIVES YOU A NEW PHONE NUMBER

Installing a new SIM card gives you a new phone number so your old number won’t work until you reinstall your original SIM card. So, if people need to reach you, you’ll need to tell people your new Dutch/European number.

One of the benefits of using an eSIM is that you can keep your phone’s number while also using your new eSIM.

Furthermore, many websites/apps use two-factor authentication—which is tied to your phone number so that will no longer be an option with the new SIM installed. And if you use Uber/Lyft, you’ll need to update your new phone number in the app when you install your new SIM.

AVOID YOUR CURRENT PROVIDER’S INTERNATIONAL DATA PLAN

Your current mobile provider likely has an international data plan but they’re typically expensive and the service is often slow, inconsistent, and has limited data allowances.

For example, the AT&T International Day Pass costs $10/day, Verizon TravelPass is also $10/day and many T-Mobile plans offer free international roaming but you’re only guaranteed 2g data speeds… which will struggle to load Google Maps or even email.

HOW MUCH MOBILE DATA DO YOU NEED?

As long as you’re not streaming music/videos or uploading a ton of photos, you probably won’t use more than 4GB-8GB of mobile data a week. For reference, the average American smartphone owner uses around 15-20GB of mobile data each month.

If you’re spending a lot of time on social media (notably Instagram and TikTok) then you’ll use more but if you’re just doing normal web browsing and using Google Maps then you might only use 1-2GB a week.

KEEP YOUR OLD SIM CARD SAFE

If your current phone uses a SIM card, be sure to keep the SIM in a safe place while using your new SIM Card because you’ll need to reinstall the old card to use your normal service.

DOES THE NETHERLANDS HAVE 5G?

Yes, you’ll find widespread 5G coverage in most cities and 4G is common in more rural parts of the Netherlands.

GENERAL TIPS FOR USING YOUR PHONE IN EUROPE

I’ve written extensively about using smartphones and data plans in Europe and tips for buying SIM Cards For Visiting Europe . Below are some more helpful tips about using your phone in throughout Europe.

BRING A PORTABLE BATTERY CHARGER

Traveling with your phone will quickly drain your batteries so I highly recommend a portable battery. I use Anker PowerCore 10000 because it’s tiny and affordable but there are multiple options.

BE AWARE OF THEFT WHILE USING YOUR PHONE

Pickpockets love stealing smartphones so pay attention while you’re using your phone, stash it away safely while on public transportation/crowds, and don’t set it down while you’re in public. Read my guide to Pickpockets in Europe for more anti-theft advice.

TAKE STEPS TO LOWER YOUR MOBILE DATA USAGE

It’s easy to burn through a lot of data because many apps use data in the background. Facebook, email, Instagram, Snapchat… those all constantly use data throughout the day without you knowing it. That’s it’s important to know how to limit your data usage.

USE AIRPLANE MODE AND BLOCK DATA TO SPECIFIC APPS: I’ll put my phone in Airplane Mode because that disables all data (but GPS still works in Airplane Mode). You can also go into the settings and disable data access to each individual app. I’ll go in and turn every off except for things like Google Maps or others that I’ll use more frequently — this way when I turn off Airplane Mode only those apps that will use data. Then I’ll turn Airplane Mode back on when I’m done.
DOWNLOAD OFFLINE MAPS: Google Maps lets you download entire city maps so they can be used offline. As a bonus, GPS doesn’t use data so offline Google Maps works fairly well (but not all functionality works). Here is a good YouTube video that explains everything.
SAVE HEAVY PHONE USAGE FOR WIFI: Wait until you’re somewhere with a WiFi connection before you do any heavy streaming or download files.

I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Netherlands

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Netherlands at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Netherlands then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Netherlands have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Vodafone, T-Mobile and KPN. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Netherlands are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Netherlands with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

You can buy a Europe prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

I'm always curious with issues like this, do people seriously think that a vendor is just going to sit around and not work on the problem? While their networks aren't as robust as they like us to think, they are going to resolve these issues if nothing else to avoid government hassling them for causing an outage.

This screwed me so bad yesterday in Mexico City. Carrier left us out to dry. I’m leaving Verizon over this. What I went through yesterday when this randomly happened in a random neighborhood of CDMX I will never forgive this company for.
