Anchorage residents urged to stay home, reconsider travel plans as COVID-19 cases hit record highs

As coronavirus cases surge in Anchorage, the city health department on Wednesday issued a public health advisory urging residents to avoid gatherings, and to wear a mask and stay at least 6 feet away from others in public.

The department is also asking residents to stay home except to get food, go to work or recreate outside, and to reconsider travel plans for the upcoming holidays, to help drive down the spread of the virus before it’s too late.

“If we continue on this path, our local hospitals could soon exceed their capacity,” said Anchorage Health Department director Heather Harris. “After eight months, we recognize that some people may have let down their guard or don’t believe that COVID-19 is still a serious threat. But we are on a dangerous path.”

The city’s pleas for residents to adhere more strictly to precautions come as coronavirus cases rise rapidly across much of the state, and hospitalizations increase. The state health department reported 353 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, about half of them tied to Anchorage. It’s the fifth straight day the state has recorded more than 300 new infections.

In Anchorage, the city health department says the coronavirus is “everywhere.” More cases have been identified in Anchorage since Saturday than in the entire first four months of the pandemic, Harris said.

“This is a time for all of us to be vigilant and not underestimate the virus, because what we do matters and together we can beat COVID-19 and save lives,” she said.

City officials did not issue any new emergency orders or mandatory restrictions on Wednesday. Acting Anchorage Mayor Austin Quinn-Davidson said the city does not want to order residents to hunker down again , because of the brunt that has on the economy. The city is asking everyone to step up and follow the health recommendations now to avoid further restrictions, she said.

“We know the public can show up and can do what’s right,” she said.

Quinn-Davidson and Harris spoke during a news briefing broadcast on Facebook Wednesday , and were joined by representatives from local businesses and hospitals. They all asked residents to take the virus seriously.

“By following the social distancing and the mask mandates, our industry may survive. Without following these mandates, we may be facing another hunker down or possibly closure,” said Heidi Heinrich, co-owner of Lucky Wishbone. “Many of us won’t come out the other end of that.”

Local hospital leaders also underscored the importance of wearing masks. Julie Taylor, chief executive of Alaska Regional Hospital, said a majority of the hospital’s patients with the virus “had been exposed to someone that did not have a mask, plain and simple.”

“I know that there’s naysayers out there. And honestly you guys are the problem,” she said, about people who don’t believe in wearing masks.

They said staffing at the hospitals is a main concern, as more employees are home because they have the virus or are in quarantine, and as national demand makes it harder to hire additional workers.

While Anchorage already requires people to wear masks in public, indoor spaces and outdoors when they can’t keep enough distance, Quinn-Davidson said she’d also support a statewide mask mandate as people from across Alaska come to the city for health care and other reasons.

“We know that masks protect us and that they save lives,” she said. “They protect the economy. And so absolutely, the more people wearing masks, the better.”

The temporary suspension of Alaska Airlines operations at the Anchorage airport has been lifted. Flights are starting to arrive and depart to and from Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage, Alaska.

Guests may experience delays as our operations fully resume throughout the day. We appreciate your patience during this time.

For guests traveling in and out of Anchorage, we will be issuing a Travel Waiver this afternoon to help you make other travel arrangements if needed.

We understand there’s considerable damage being reported at Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage, Alaska, due to a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit this morning. There are no reports of any injuries to employees or guests at the airport.

As a precaution, Alaska Airlines is suspending operations at the airport until at least 12:30 p.m. Pacific (11:30 a.m. Alaska) to allow for a thorough safety assessment of the facility and infrastructure. We are pausing arrivals and departures in and out of Anchorage during this time.

Warm daytime and overnight temperatures have continued the melting of high elevation snowpack and glacier ice to produce minor flooding along the Chilkat River. Warm temperatures will continue through the week and into the weekend, causing continued daily crests. * WHAT...Flooding caused by snowmelt continues. * WHERE...The Chilkat River near areas around Mile Post 14 and 24 of the Haines Highway, near Klukwan and the Chilkat River Bridge. * WHEN...Until 700 PM AKDT Sunday. * IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying areas. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 713 PM AKDT, River gauge reports indicate rises in water levels from snowmelt in areas around mile post 14 and 24 of the Haines Highway, near Klukwan and the Chilkat River Bridge. Minor flooding is ongoing, especially near the Chilkat River. - Please send reports of impacts and pictures of those impacts with specific location information to the National Weather Service forecast office in Juneau by email ([email protected]), or via X, or Facebook. - For Chilkat River at Klukwan: At 6:00pm the stage was 126.5 feet. Flood Stage is 126.0 feet. Forecast: Crests between 126.0 and 126.8 feet are likely over the next several days. Daily minimums in water levels at the Chilkat River Bridge will occur at around 10pm and daily crests at around 10am are expected. Impacts: At 126.0 feet: Bankfull stage. Water will begin to flood backyards along the Chilkat River in the village of Klukwan. At 126.5 feet: Expect flooding of yards and bank erosion near the Jilkaat Kwan Cultural Heritage Center Campus Traditional Knowledge camp in the village of Klukwan. Water will flood lower elevations in backyards along the Chilkat River near Klukwan and start to impact some smokehouse and a river access road. - For the Klehini River: Daily water level peaks at the 26 mile bridge gauge will occur near midnight. - If you live near or along the Chilkat river, stay alert and be prepared to take action.

Asking Eric: Should I travel with people I just met?

Dear Eric: Should I go to Tanzania for two weeks with people I don’t know and one person I only kind of know?

I mentioned I wanted to go to Tanzania some day and this lady in the movie theater said, “Oh, I’m going to Tanzania and we need one more person in our group.” Between airfare and safari costs, it will be $8,000. I have the money, but I was planning to invest in a mutual fund. Should I go?

– Impromptu Invitation

Dear Invitation: No! Do not go to a second location with random people from movie theaters! Report to your financial adviser’s office, STAT. It sounds like you just want something to spend money on.

Dear Eric : I’m a 42-year-old woman who is child-free by choice. I always remember birthdays, and love giving thoughtfully chosen gifts to the people in my life (my nearest and dearest, especially). But let’s be honest, we aren’t always close with everyone we’re related to, and at a certain point it gets to be a bit much.

Everyone, it seems, is having kids, except for me. My husband and I are desperately trying to save for a house and I’m struggling with the feeling of inequity and imbalance around this never-ending custom of baby gifts. And truthfully, I feel a little bitter about i t. (Most of these people don’t even remember my birthday.)

I realize I’m likely putting too much pressure on myself, but should I be expected to give presents to everyone in my life, even those on the periphery?

– Present Not Accounted For

Dear Present: Something that brought you joy is now creating undue stress, and so it’s time to let it go. While your generosity was selfless, it also made you feel good to give presents and bring people joy – that’s as it should be. You’re allowed to get a lift from doing nice things. When that lift becomes an albatross, however, something has to change.

So, without further ado, please welcome to the stage … a nice card! Have you seen the advances scientists have made in the field of card stock? It’s really something. Those with the pop-up bouquets are my favorite.

Giving a thoughtfully selected card instead of a thoughtfully selected gift may not give you the same lift, but by establishing an internal rule that you’re going to give everyone and their baby a sweet gesture that lets them know you’re thinking about them, you can begin to relieve some of the burden you’ve put on yourself.

Some family members may have something to say when/if they notice the change, but an expectation on their part does not mean an obligation on yours. Tell them, “We’re trying out new ways of showing our love and excitement, but if t here’s anything you need, know we’re always here for you.”

Dear Eric: Ugh, I’m getting divorced. Should I buy my new house close to work, eliminate my commute and have a bigger, nicer house, or should I buy another house in my neighborhood where I’m comfortable and have friends, community, babysitters, and city life and culture around? Current commute is about 30 minutes each way.

– Uprooted and Commuted

Dear Uprooted: Being closer to friends is better than being closer to work. As you’re figuring out what comes next, the benefit of more space and no commute won’t be as great as of deepening your existing relationships in your community and making use of the support system you’ve already established.

You’re going through a period of such huge upheaval; finding a new babysitter for a night when you really need to unwind sounds like a bridge too far. You’ve got roots where you are and while your divorce is going to change the nature of some of those roots, and even cut some off, there’s a beautiful possibility that many of those roots will only get more secure. I encourage you to give yourself that possibility. This bigger, nicer house could be lovely, but I’ll take a more modest abode filled with people, laughter, and life any day.

By the by, my girl Goldilocks just swung by with a third suggestion. Is it possible to split the difference and find a bigger place that’s midway between work and where you live now?

There was a study published in the journal Transportation in 2001 that found that for most people, the ideal commute is 16 minutes (chosen even over having no commute at all). Your mileage may vary, quite literally, but maybe giving yourself some drive time back while not burdening friendships with distance is your best option.

Congratulations on starting this new journey in your life, even if it comes with some tough logistical and emotional twists and turns.
