Emerald owns and runs nine boats that accommodate 84 to 180 guests each. The ships include large common areas and bedrooms with en suite bathrooms and flat-screen TVs.

Heated indoor pools, sun terraces, massage and wellness centers, and a selection of restaurants are all included in the common areas’ amenities. There are fitness courses on board, as well as various entertainment options. Cruisers can rent bicycles on land to tour old city cores.

Since its founding in 1976, the French cruise company CroisiEurope has been operated by a family. This company has a fleet of 55 ships and barges that travels to 40 different nations, including Egypt, Cambodia, and Spain.

The company sails two specially designed ships in Lake Kariba in southern Africa, which is unusual for river cruises. Furthermore, CroisiEurope has a subsidiary that offers barge tours on six distinct French canals, including those in Burgundy and Provence, around the country.

The minimal onboard amenities keep the cruise ticket at a realistic cost. The cruise line aims to provide the finest value in the cruise business. French cuisine with a touch of local flavor is the focus of the cuisine in the main dining room, which is included in the price of the voyage.

Are River Cruises Right for Kids?

While major cruise lines are wowing families with mega-ships with cool features like bumper cars, rock-climbing walls, 10-story waterslides, surf simulators, iFly skydiving and more, river cruise lines are slower to catch up in that department. Especially popular in Europe, river cruises meander slowly down rivers like the Danube and the Rhine, stopping in intimate ports as well as larger cities to offer passengers an easy way to visit multiple countries without packing up bags, dealing with train transfers, flights, etc.

Some river cruises don't allow children at all , but a few river cruises lines — such as Uniworld and AmaWaterways (which partners with Adventures by Disney) — are teasing parents with family sailings on itineraries that take you through the fairy-tale castles of Germany or follow the "Sound of Music" in Austria. But, are river cruises actually a good vacation option for kids? Sadly -- not really.

Unlike Ocean Liners, River Cruises...

Do not have family cabins. Riverboats are much smaller than cruise ships that ply oceans. Riverboats navigate lower depths and narrow passageways so they have to be somewhat small. They also have predominantly been for the older set, so cabins offered on river cruises, even suites, usually lack pull-down berths, sofa beds and bunks in which kids can share a room with their family. On river cruises, families often have to book multiple rooms to accommodate everyone, which increases the cost of the cruise.

Do not have kids clubs. As river cruises do not cater to families year-round, the smaller ships save all of its space for adult lounges and dining rooms. Even when offering a family voyage, the boat often houses kids' programs in spaces originally intended for adults. You won't find video games, movie nights, craft making or fun character interactions — even on an Adventures by Disney river cruise. Not only are there no kids clubs, but save for the upper deck, there simply isn't a lot of space for kids to run around.

Do not have swimming pools. Only a rare few river ships have a "pool." That's in quotations because the pools are often so small they aren't bigger than a large hot tub. Kids will not have a place to splash and play during the day — intentional on river cruises, where passengers are expected to spend the day exploring quaint villages.

Do not have baby-sitting. A perk of ocean cruises and even all-inclusive resorts are the baby-sitting options so mom and dad can enjoy a quiet, romantic dinner on their vacation every once in a while. On river cruises, you do not have the option of having some couple time.

Limited kid-friendly options. River cruises are great for offering bicycles for passengers to enjoy along paved river paths. Alas, these don't come with infant or toddler seats, and kid-sized bikes are a rarity. Also a rarity? Foods kids can easily enjoy at dinner. Kids' menus may be offered, but are extremely limited. Even excursions offered to passengers don't have kids' top of mind. Some excursions require four-hour bus rides and meals with groups can last for hours.

Can be very expensive. While you can pay for a river cruise with a card like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card or Discover it Miles and then use miles from those cards to offset the charge, there aren't as many options to use miles and points for cruises as there are for flights and hotels. River cruises, often luxury in nature, will generally cost thousands of dollars per person — and do not discount the fare for children.

Still Want to Take a River Cruise? Here Are the Best

Adventures by Disney. Cruising on AmaWaterways ships, the (expensive) Adventures by Disney cruises provide bubbly, family-friendly Disney employees to serve as your own tour guides through the sites along the cruise route. Disney has set up some special excursions on each cruise (like strudel making in Vienna), and also provides that extra-special Disney touch accounting for every last detail. But -- don't let the Disney name fool you as some Adventures by Disney are adult-only and others have a minimum age for the sailing that is much higher than say on the Disney Cruise Line.

If you really want Europe + Disney + cruising, the actual Disney Cruise Line does have some European itineraries on the large Disney Magic ship that may be better suited for young families.

Uniworld. The uber-luxurious cruises provided by Uniworld open up in the summer and holiday seasons for 10-day itineraries for families. These work well for multigenerational groups, offering a little something for everyone during excursions — including cooking classes with the chef for kids. Butler service in the suites is nice, but kids probably won't appreciate the ornate, gold-leafed décor found on many ships.

Tauck. Adventure cruises by Tauck will take families to exciting destinations like the Galapagos and small boat tours of Alaska, as well as some river options. Look for Tauck Bridges sailings, which are designed specifically for families.

"Budget-Friendly" Alternatives

If you've been thinking about a family river cruise, also look into this alternate options.

Instead of a Danube river cruise: Instead of cruising the Danube, consider visiting Budapest and Prague without a cruise. They are lovely European cities where you can find great points deals on hotels. In Budapest , you can check out a castle, swim in the natural hot springs at Szechenyi Thermal Bath and explore the zoo, while in Prague , there are more castles, parks and puppet shows that will entertain the kids. A comfortable train ride through the countryside connects the two, with food and drink service, for a whole lot less than a cruise.

Instead of a Rhine river cruise: A trip down Germany's Rhine river can be done by renting a car, where you can stop at one or dozens of castles. Rhine river tours typically begin in Amsterdam , which is very kid-friendly. Visit Vondelpark for play time, rent bicycles, try a canal sightseeing cruise and explore one of the museums in the city, many with special programs for kids.

Instead of a Po river cruise: Italy has so much to offer families, there's no need to see it by boat. Trains will take you from destination to destination, with kids loving a visit to Rome's Colosseum, a ride in a gondola in Venice and even enjoying kid-friendly wineries in Tuscany, where you can picnic and sample local wines.

Instead of a European river cruise: Europe is filled with all-inclusive resorts for families, from beachfront destinations in Spain and Portugal (the Martinhal resorts are fantastic) to alpine ski resorts in Switzerland and France (think Club Med). At theses resorts, you'll get all of the perks — kids clubs, baby-sitting, larger accommodations — and all of the benefits of Europe. These resorts can arrange sightseeing excursions and are likely much less expensive than a river cruise (and of course at some hotels you could use your hotel points).

Bottom Line

River cruises are truly a wonderful way to see Europe, but until they make a ship that is kid-friendly from head to toe (with discount fares for kids), save your pennies and go for the alternative unless you really think your kids are the right age and temperament for a more adult vacation and you have a hefty budget to work with.

Think of river cruising and you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s the domain of retired couples who like to relax and watch the scenery, or young active types who like to trek across cities, visiting museums and learning about history. However, the river cruise industry is evolving fast. Many river cruise lines have recognised that river cruising can be a fun and educational holiday for children. As such, they have developed a multitude of European river cruises which are perfect for families.

With family cabins that sleep four in one room, or adjoining cabins that sleep up to five, families are well accommodated on many river cruise ships. Whilst you won’t find waterslides, climbing walls and zip lines like you may do on large cruise ships, there are on-board facilities that children will love, from swimming pools to cinemas.

You’ll find an abundance of activities for children of all ages to enjoy once ashore as well, with a range of excursions which have been designed with young travellers in mind such as making Venetian masks in Venice or making marzipan in Germany.

The Best European River Cruises for Families

Amawaterways.

AmaWaterways was the first river cruise line to design ships with families in mind. AmaStella and AmaViola debuted in 2016 with adjoining cabins that connected via an internal doorway, provining accommodation for families of up to five (or four plus a nanny). These ships also feature suites with sofa beds to accommodate families of four in comfort and style. Children under 11 are also permitted to share a bed with two adults if desired.

The real game-changer in the family river cruise industry, however, is new ship AmaMagna which launched in May 2019. This double-width ship is the world’s biggest river cruise ship and sails on the Danube, which is wider than other European rivers. On-board facilities that kids will love include the Theatre, where children can not only watch movies, but also play on the Playstation and Nintendo Switch, as well as a selection of board games and, importantly, a decent-sized swimming pool. Most of AmaWaterways’ ships have bicycles that guests can use ashore, and AmaMagna also has child-size bikes – perfect for exploring as a family!

AmaWaterways also has a partnership with Disney. The cruise line offers ‘Adventures by Disney cruises’ on the iconic Danube river, with activities including live falconry shows at ancient castles and magical carriage rides in Budapest.

Miniumum age to sail with AmaWaterways: Children must be 4 years old or over to sail, but AmaWaterways doesn’t recommend their river cruises for children under 8.

Families with children over age 8 are welcome on these sailings, but the average minimum age is 10 for river rafting excursions on this river cruise itinerary. UnCruise Adventures provides special rates for families, with a savings of $500 per child ages 8-17. 

Families wishing to return back to the days of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn may enjoy taking a family river cruise on the Mississippi River. Some multigenerational families have booked family river cruises on the Mississippi with companies such as American Cruise Lines and American Queen Steamboat Company . Both cruise lines offer authentic paddlewheel riverboat cruises on the Mississippi that bring America’s history and Mark Twain’s tales to life.

These Adventure Cruises Have Unexpected Perks for Kids — and We're Not Talking About Waterslides

Think river cruises and expedition ships are off limits for kids? Christine Chitnis reports on the growing trend of welcoming tweens and teens on these eye-opening adventures.

“Look, more ice,” said my son Vijay, his preteen sarcasm finely tuned. We were hiking in the otherworldly Ilulissat Icefjord, on the rugged western coast of Greenland , which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004. As we reached a lookout point and watched colossal icebergs drifting on the water below, I had to laugh. Most travelers would meet this moment with hushed reverence, but my then-12-year-old’s wisecrack was right on the money.

It was one of many unexpectedly amusing moments on our 16-day cruise aboard the Fridtjof Nansen , a cutting-edge, 265-cabin ship operated by HX , as Hurtigruten Expeditions is now known. The round-trip itinerary began in Reykjavík, Iceland , took us across the Denmark Strait to the western shores of Greenland, and into the icy waters north of the Arctic Circle. Along the way we encountered musk oxen, walruses, and whales. We kayaked through fjords and visited residents of small towns such as Qaqortoq, where we learned firsthand about the rich Norse and Inuit history of the region.

We also had the chance to collect ice samples, ferrying them back to the ship’s science center, which is stocked with microscopes, interactive maps, a research library, and a sensor system that gathers scientific data for the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research. In fact, that was part of the reason I chose the Nansen for this mother-son trip: I wanted to give my son equal parts adventure and education. (That being said, I’ll admit we occasionally skipped lectures and science demos to immerse ourselves in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Traveling with a tween, I’ve learned, is its own lesson in moderation.)

The polar regions aren’t the only place to cultivate youthful curiosity. European river cruises — often thought of as the preserve of older adults — are finding a new audience among middle and high schoolers, particularly those with an interest in history and the humanities.

Travel agent Jodi Simpson and her then-17-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, recently returned from a weeklong Avalon Waterways sail from Amsterdam to Luxembourg. Elizabeth was particularly enamored with offbeat attractions such as Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet , a museum in Rüdesheim, Germany, that houses some 350 self-playing musical instruments. It was the pair’s second time traveling with Avalon Waterways; the first was a two-week trip from Zurich to Vienna when Elizabeth was 13.

“You have to know your child,” Simpson says. “These cruises might not be a fit for kids who need peers around. But if they like being around adults, and learning through travel, a river cruise is an amazing option.”

Families with teens and tweens have a growing number of choices when it comes to ships that can meet their needs — though they shouldn’t expect the sorts of amenities more commonly associated with mega-ships, things such as ropes courses, towering waterslides, or high-end VR arcades. Lindblad Expeditions , for example, has National Geographic Global Explorers itineraries led by kid-friendly naturalists in places such as Alaska, Antarctica, and Baja California. Quasar Expeditions , a favorite of World’s Best Awards voters , specializes in family-oriented expeditions in the Galápagos Islands and often hosts multigenerational groups on its two intimate vessels.

One lesser-known option is the innovative European cruise line A-Rosa , which extends special pricing for families, including free travel for kids ages 15 and younger. Its new river ship, the 140-stateroom A-Rosa Sena, is a rarity on the rivers of Europe: it has a dedicated kids’ club, a swimming pool specifically for children, and a dozen family cabins — with bunk beds — that sleep up to five.

10 Things To Know About a River Cruise with AmaWaterways

I’ll admit it. I’m not a fan of mega ship cruising. I’ve sailed on the major cruise lines, but I’ve always preferred the intimacy of smaller ships. The excursions have tended to be higher quality (and included in the price of the cruise), the service has always been impeccable, and the food has been top-notch.

This past Christmas, my family and I tried a new form of small ship cruising: river cruising with AmaWaterways . While similar to our other experiences with companies like Alaskan Dream and UnCruise , river cruises do differ in some ways.

Here are 10 things to know before booking a river cruise with AmaWaterways.

1. Some river cruises have age restrictions and recommendations

It’s no secret that river cruising typically draws an older crowd. Even so, families with kids of an appropriate age are welcome. On AmaWaterways, there is a minimum age to sail, depending on the location. For Europe and Southeast Asia , children under 4 years old are not permitted on board. In addition, AmaWaterways doesn’t recommend the cruises for children, ages 4 to 7. For Africa , there’s a minimum age of 12 years old, due to safety precautions.

In my opinion, I think that the sweet spot for river cruising with kids is age 7 through 13. Kids of this age have a natural curiosity about different cultures and are more likely to embrace the history-focused excursions. They also still enjoy spending time with you, their parents. That being said, if you’re traveling with a multi-generational group (think Grandma and Grandpa), I think kids of all ages would enjoy the family time.

2. Your family may need more than one cabin

As is the case with most small ships, the vast majority of the rooms only accommodate two passengers, meaning a family of four likely would require two cabins. On AmaWaterways, all guests under the age of 18 are required to bunk with an adult. In our case, my oldest son is 19 years old, so my boys could stay together. Ships offer a limited number of triple-occupancy cabins where a child (age 4 to 10) can sleep on a fold-out sofa. You’ll want to talk to an AmaWaterways representative for specifics.

3. You won’t find child-specific programming

While AmaWaterways ships have plenty of programming in terms of on-shore excursions, you won’t find any activities specifically geared to kids. And you won’t find a kids’ club, arcade, climbing wall, go-kart track or swimming pool with corkscrew slides.

KidTripster Tip: Most AmaWaterways ships do have a small, heated pool on their sun decks.

KidTripster Tip: Adventures by Disney does operate river cruises that are geared to kids, and those cruises actually sail on AmaWaterways ships; however, these Disney cruises typically come with a higher price tag.

4. You’ll want to choose the most active excursions

On AmaWaterways, every day comes with an offering of on-shore excursions. For city tours, you’ll be given a choice between a relaxed, regular or active pace; always choose the active pace. Better yet, if a more physically-exerting activity is offered, pick that. I have two teenage boys, and they much preferred the days when we were hiking or biking. Frankly, I did, too. It’s the only way that I could justify the amount of food that I was eating on the ship!

5. It’s okay to ask for seconds

The food on AmaWaterways is – without a doubt – the best that I’ve tasted on any cruise line that I’ve sailed. If you have big eaters like my teenage sons, don’t hesitate to order extra food. You want two appetizers? Sure. A second entrée? No problem. Three desserts? Knock yourself out. It’s perfectly fine. Me? I was perpetually stuffed.

KidTripster Tip: In addition to breakfast, lunch, and dinner, there are small tapas and snacks in the main lounge throughout the day. My boys never went hungry!

6. Yes, there’s WiFi, but…

While there is free WiFi available on AmaWaterways ships, I’m going to suggest a radical idea: consider unplugging. Yes, your kids likely will protest loudly at this suggestion, but I urge you to give it a try. Amazing things happen when you spend downtime together without screens. You may rediscover your love of chess. You can impress your kids with your mad Scrabble skills. They may read a book with paper pages . Or… I’m going out on a limb here… you may have an actual conversation.

7. Be prepared for downtime

We found that we had more downtime on our river cruise than on previous cruises. If the weather would have been better, I’m sure that we would have spent more time on the top deck swimming in the pool or sitting in the loungers. Instead, we spent most our time in the lounge and the small gym.

KidTripster Tip: Our ship had playing cards and board games to borrow, but the one Scrabble game was always in high demand. Consider bringing a few travel-sized games of your own. You do have movies available on your cabins’s television or plan to download options for your personal electronic devices before you board.

8. Don’t expect to see a lot of other kids

Ok, this cruise isn’t the type where you drop your children at the kids’ club to play with other kids and then pick them up three hours later. Nor is it the type of cruise where your teen disappears for hours to hang out with his new best friends. First, as we’ve explained, there are no clubs for kids or teens. And secondly, with only 156 passengers on board, there likely will be very few other kids.

Our Christmas cruise had a total of 135 passengers. Of those, I’d estimate that there were about 18 people under the age of 22. You’ll find the most kids on board during traditional school holidays: spring break, summer, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

KidTripster Tip: If your kids do want to connect with other kids of a similar age, do it on the first day. You’ll need to make a concerted effort, as the cruise director doesn’t organize any mixers specifically for families.

9. Good option if you’re traveling with grandparents

I think that river cruising is a particularly good option for families traveling with grandparents. Between downtime and meals, you’ll have plenty of time to spend together. But when it comes to on-shore excursions, family members can pick the best options for their particular interests and abilities. So if Grandpa uses a cane and needs a little extra time, he can select the relaxed pace city tour while the grandkids can opt for a bike ride. Then family members can reunite over dinner and share highlights from their day.

10. Weather is a factor

When my family and I booked a Christmas Market cruise along the Danube, I pictured in my mind sailing past quaint Bavarian towns with a dusting of snow on their red tile roofs. But the locals told us that – thanks to global warming – they haven’t had a white Christmas in years. Instead, the weather was blustery, cold, and rainy. On our 7-day cruise, we only had one day with blue skies. I’m not going to lie, the weather was pretty miserable, and those cold temperatures impacted how long we wanted to be outside exploring.

Despite the allure of the holiday season, I think that my family would have preferred this itinerary during the summer when the scenery would have been more picturesque and the activities could have been enjoyed under sunny skies.

How to Have a Kid-Friendly River Cruise: Advice From a 12-Year-Old

Note from Wendy: River cruises are not known for being kid-friendly. Ships are small, with no space to run; there are no children’s facilities or eateries; and there are rarely other kids onboard. But my 10- and 12-year-old sons loved their Danube cruise on Viking River Cruises’   Viking Alsvin . We sailed over the Thanksgiving school break, which worked well because the kids didn’t miss too much school and most Christmas Markets were open. The trip was fun, educational, and logistically a breeze, so I asked my older son, Charlie, to share his advice for parents who might be wondering whether they should take their kids on a river cruise.

Hi. I’m Charlie. I’m 12 years old, and I’ve been on ten ocean cruises, but this was my first river cruise. To me and my brother Doug’s dismay, we were the only kids on the ship. But we made the most of it. In the end, we had a great trip because we found fun things to do on the ship and because we were in port walking around most of the time anyway. Here is my advice for parents:

1. Get a ship that’s almost always in port. We spent every day—and almost every night—walking around a new port. The ship served mainly as just our overnight hotel, so we never felt like we were stuck on it.

Mom made sure we returned to the ship exhausted.

2. Get an interesting observation deck. We had shuffleboard on the observation deck, so we made a series out of it. Every day was a game, and whoever won the most games would win, so we were motivated to play every day. And while we played we could see views of the ports we were in.

Those are locks between Budapest and Bratislava.

3. Check out the locks. Try to be up on the observation deck when going through locks because it’s interesting to see how they work.

4. Find playgrounds in port. European countries tend to have more exotic things in their playgrounds, and your kids likely will be wowed.

5. Don’t go around with the group from the ship. They go too slowly for kids and are not interested in the same things you are. It was easy to get around on our own on foot or by subway.

On the ships’ tours they don’t dip candles.

And they don’t ride ferris wheels. That’s Vienna’s Riesenrad.

And they don’t go swimming at the Gellert Baths. This is the outdoor pool.

The ship’s concierge arranged kid-friendly experiences for us too. For instance, in Austria at Melk Abbey we got to see the Minerals Room.

There were lots of precious rocks.

Doug and I took a photo of almost every rock.

The only time we went with a group from the ship was when we took a bus to Salzburg because Salzburg isn’t on the Danube.

6. While you’re walking around all day, try new foods. There are many foods that you can find in Europe that you can’t find in the United States. There are also many European foods that you can find in the United States but they taste much better in Europe.

7. Back on the ship, eat upstairs on the Aquavit Terrace. The food came quickly. It made for a yummy family dinner without having to sit in the dining room for two hours. The menu had six entrees, and I promise your kid would like at least one of them. We also loved Milan, our waiter who was so nice to us.

8. Look for kid-friendly movies and TV shows in your cabin. In our cabin they played The Sound of Music, which was great because we went to Salzburg where they filmed the movie and we recognized the gardens where the Von Trapp children played.

9. Find board games in the ship’s library. Our ship’s library had Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble, chess, checkers, and backgammon. There were also two computers there, so I could catch up on schoolwork when my laptop wasn’t working.

I had to do homework during the cruise.

10. Talk to the older passengers. They liked talking to me and Doug, and they were easy to talk to. One even asked to play shuffleboard with us.

So my advice to parents is: If you plan on spending a lot of time in port, and if your kids are at least nine to ten years old, and you think they are mature enough, then you can consider bringing them on your next river cruise.

We are in the process of planning a family trip to Europe, and are very interested in the idea of traveling with a river cruise. We just want to make sure that this is something our kids will enjoy too. I like the suggestion of not touring the port we are at with the group from the ship; that way if my kids get bored, they won’t annoy the other people around us. I think it would be a good idea to also look and see if at the different ports we go to have any festivals or things of that nature going on so that my kids will get to experience a little bit of the culture! This article really helped with getting ideas of what I can do with my kids in Europe.

4 Best River Cruises for Families

More and more families are heading to Europe for river cruises and features that include dedicated tours and programming to attract parents, and often the extended family.

Inclusive excursions can feature Venetian mask making in Italy , private dinners in a centuries-old castle along the Rhine River, and hot air balloon rides over Paris . Families can even take off to explore destinations on their own using the ships’ complimentary bicycles. The immersive experience while onboard these intimate ships can get families cooking regional cuisine, taking language classes, and listening to local entertainment. Most of the departures take place during the summer and winter school holidays and are usually seven-night cruises, with some offering land-based add-ons.

Family River Cruises vs. Ocean Cruises

Unlike traditional ocean cruise ships that can hold thousands of passengers, river cruise ships hold a maximum of approximately 200 guests. With that small size comes much less onboard amenities. You won’t find water parks or climbing walls, and there will be one, maybe two restaurants. There may be a small fitness center and spa for adults, and some ships may have a small pool.

The intimate river cruises, however, also lack long lines to get on and off the ship and crowds. More of a tour where the mode of transportation is a ship, river cruise itineraries also provide a more personal and immersive experience with the ships’ ability to visit small cities and towns. Local experts and guides lead shore excursions that provide an authentic feel. Rates on river cruises are generally all-inclusive, with dining, drinks, gratuities, and even shore excursions included. Airfare is additional.

1. Adventures by Disney/AmaWaterways

Adventures by Disney partners with AmaWaterways river cruise line for cruises on the Danube River and Rhine River. Countries visited include Austria, Germany, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, Slovakia, and Switzerland.

Adventures by Disney excursion highlights include an Oktoberfest celebration with costumed local entertainers, bike ride through Austria’s Wachau Valley vineyards, marionette performance and strudel making demonstration in Vienna , clog painting and a cheese making demonstration in Holland, and ziplining through the Black Forest in Strasbourg, France. The holiday sailing features visits to Christmas markets and a Vienna Boys Choir performance.

Disney Adventure Guides are on each sailing, serving as hosts in each destination and onboard the ship. The guides are in addition to AmaWaterways’ crew and Cruise Manager. Onboard the ship, guest spaces are repurposed during the family sailings to provide for specially designed activities geared towards children, teens, and adults. Adjoining staterooms and suites are available and can sleep three to four guests. The ships also have swimming pools.

Recommended Age: Children ages 8 and up are welcome to cruise on AmaWaterways.

A-ROSA offers sailings just for families, cruising along the Rhine, Maine, Moselle, Danube, Rhine and Saine Rivers and visiting Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Serbia and Switzerland. Especially appealing is that each child ages 2 to 15 sails free with an adult! A-ROSA’s ships have triples, family suites, and adjoining staterooms to cater to the family market. Almost all of A-ROSA’s ships also have swimming pools, and during holiday periods, the A-ROSA kids’ club is available for ages 4 to 15.

Recommended Age: Age 2 is the minimum age on A-ROSA, but children age 6 and older will most enjoy the experience.

3. Tauck Bridges/Tauck River Cruising

Tauck offers four family-specific cruises: Fun Along the Seine: Paris to Normandy; France Family River Cruise (on the Rhone River); Blue Danube (Hungary to Germany and through Slovakia and Austria); and a Castles on the Rhine cruise, which sails through Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands. Kid-friendly fun includes a scavenger hunt in the Louvre, Bratislava Devin Castle Jousting in Slovakia, French cooking class in Valence, and a private dinner and tour of Reichenstein Castle on the Rhine.

Tauck has several director-level staff members on each departure, in addition to the local guides. Though there are no connecting rooms onboard, Tauck does offer family-friendly configurations with some suites that can accommodate three or four with a pullout couch. It also waives its single supplement, ideal for single parents or a single grandparent traveling with the family.

Recommended Age: The recommended age is 8 and up for enjoyment, but the minimum age is 4 on the Tauck Bridges river cruise departures.

4. Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection

Rivers include the Rhine, Danube, Main, Seine, Po and Venice Lagoon. Countries that are visited are Austria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. A December Christmas markets cruise in Germany is also available. Family shore excursion highlights include Frankfurt’s paleontological museum, a tour of Vienna’s Spanish Riding School, glass-blowing and mask-making workshop in Italy, hot air balloon rides over Paris, and visiting Marksburg Castle and its armor collection in Braubach, Germany.

The Generations departures also include kid-friendly menus and nightly Young Travelers Table (though kids can also eat with their parents if they chose), onboard Family Hosts, special ship tours with the Captain or hotel manager, use of bicycles, onboard language and dessert making lessons, and a Young Travelers’ Lounge & Game Room. Each night with turndown, children receive a special gift reflective of the destination.

No longer the domain of retirees, river cruising has come into its own as the “it” way for families to explore, thanks to modern and comfortable ships, roomy suites, unpack-once ease and plenty of well-organized and energy-zapping activities. Many cruise lines even offer special sailings designed just for families, in destinations as enriching as they are scenic. From Europe’s castle-flanked waterways to the natural wonders of Alaska’s Inside Passage to the beaches of Normandy, the hardest decision aboard kid-friendly river cruises in 2019 will be answering the question, “What shall we do today?”

What’s New in Kid-Friendly River Cruises

Avalon waterways.

The buzzword on Avalon Waterways this season is “choice.” They even call their menu of excursions the Choice Program, which offers “active,” “discovery” and “classic” elements on every cruise across Europe, assuring that everyone on the family vacation ends up a happy camper. Discovery programs dive deep into local culture with activities such as cooking classes or painting workshops. Active choices appeal to calorie- and energy-burner types who might want to partake in a guided cycling, paddling or hiking tour at each scenic port of call. And classic excursions bring in local experts who to share their knowledge through guided explorations of each destination. There really is something for every person and mood of the day.

The newest masterpiece in Avalon’s fleet of Suite Ships is the Envision , arriving on the Danube River in May, and cruising between Budapest, Hungary and Nuremburg, Germany. Carrying 166 passengers and served by a crew of 47, the ship features two full decks of Panorama Suites — 200-square-foot cabins with wall-to-wall French balconies and beds facing the views. The ship’s Sky Deck has a jogging track, a deck game area with oversize chess and alfresco dining. Library books, cards and board games make for fun meetups in the Club Lounge.

Avalon also announces six new itineraries, among them its first along India’s Ganges River. The 13-day sail includes visits to the Taj Mahal and Amber Fort, as well as to Saint Mother Teresa’s former home.

A new eight-day Active Discovery on the Rhône itinerary sails the Rhône delta in southern France, between Port Saint Louis and Lyon. Adults will like the wine-tasting experience with local experts, while the whole family can partake in a cycling journey around Camargue Regional National Park, a unique and wind-whipped area filled with pink flamingoes, white horses and black bulls.

AmaWaterways

Family-friendly AmaWaterways cruises some of the world’s most scenic rivers, and their brand-new AmaMagna ship is a game changer. Taking her maiden voyage on the Danube in May, with seven-night sails between Budapest, Hungary and Vilshofen, Germany, this modern beauty is twice the width of traditional river ships. And you know what that means? The luxury of more space for leg stretching and lounging, private reading time and larger accommodations, the majority of which measure 205 to 355 square feet. There are six Grand Suites at 474 square feet, and an Owner’s Suite coming in at 710 square feet. There are also eight pairs of staterooms that connect, making it perfect for multigenerational family travel .

Teens will appreciate the independence as they check out the swimming pool on the top deck and join their new friends in the movie room. There are four dining venues aboard the new AmaMagna too, including family-style Jimmy’s. Nightly performances from local musicians and dancers bring the culture and flavor of Europe aboard this one-of-a-kind vessel.

Other European ships to check out are the AmaKristina, AmaViola, AmaStella and AmaLea , all boasting connecting staterooms and triple occupancy accommodations that simplify group and family travel.

AmaWaterway’s selection excursions don’t disappoint, either. A guided bike tour to Melk Abbey; sampling traditional Slovakian specialties and preparing stuffed potato ravioli; visits to medieval castles and other historical sites … there’s always something to learn and to spark curiosity, leaving lots to talk about over dinner.

If hotspot Portugal is on your radar, the company’s new 102-passenger AmaDouro debuts on the Duoro River in April. The spectacular ship features spacious staterooms with views of the hills and terraced vineyards along the river. There’s also unlimited WIFI and movies. The AmaDouro’s Panoramic Lounge will host nightly entertainment, and the Sun Deck swimming pool is an ideal hangout perch.

AmaWaterways continues to partner with Adventures by Disney, and offers themed sailings down the Seine, Rhône, Danube and Rhine Rivers. Backroads is also a partner, which means more than 120 sailings in 2019 and 2020 satisfy adrenaline-fueled families with organized biking, hiking and walking tours, along with plenty of other intriguing outings.

Crystal Cruises

Continuing its fast foray into the river cruising space, Crystal raises the bar for luxury in the heart of Europe this March with five luxury river ships: Crystal Mozart, Crystal Mahler, Crystal Ravel, Crystal Bach and Crystal Debussy, offering 148 itineraries spanning seven to 16 days on the Rhine, Danube, Mosel and Main rivers.

Highlights include the Legendary Rhine cruise on the Crystal Bach that sails from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam, Holland, following the Rhine through storybook villages speckled with Gothic cathedrals, grand palaces and imposing fortresses. Just imagine the Instagram posts! Families will love the cooking classes, bike rides and walking tours, such as the one in Mannheim that ends at a few sweet shops to learn about spaghetti ice cream (it only looks like it sounds) and Mannemer Dreck, a delicious almond confection with a quirky inspiration for its name. There are also a few excursion splurges, such as a thrilling helicopter flight over stunning Swiss landscapes (extra charge).

The more offbeat Tulips and Windmills cruise takes travelers round-trip to and from Amsterdam, stopping in Rotterdam and Middleburg, Netherlands; and Ghent and Antwerp, Belgium. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage town of Kinderdijk, home to 19 beautifully preserved windmills, and stroll through the cobbled streets of Gouda (yes, of Gouda cheese fame) where a 17th-century cheese-weighing house offers samples of the city’s famous delicacy. Waffle and chocolate tastings are also on the agenda in Belgium, sure to please the palates of young cruisers.

While life onshore invites travelers to immerse themselves in culture and history, onboard it’s all about luxurious surroundings and six-star service. Crystal boasts the highest staff-to-guest ratio (1 to 1.6) among all European river lines, with capacity for 106 passengers.

The all-suite cabins range from deluxe and penthouse suites between 220 and 500 square feet, to the ultimate Crystal Suite, a posh 750-square-foot, two-bedroom oasis that accommodates five or six guests. Butler service is included on all ships, and there’s 24-hour room service for slumber party noshing, as well as complimentary WIFI and on-demand movies.

Tauck ’s “Bridges” trips are wildly popular with families because they are designed specifically for them. With 19 European odysseys, African safaris, expeditions in Latin America and the Galapagos Islands, and adventures in North America’s National Parks to choose from, families are spoilt for choice. This year the company brings snow-globe scenes to life on the Danube with their Holiday Magic journey. Along the way, guests enjoy visits to Europe’s popular Christmas markets, and to Oberndorf, Austria, where the beloved classic Silent Night was written and first performed in 1818. A workshop in Passau, Germany, highlights traditional treats, including their famous gingerbread, and a festive dinner aboard the ship invites guests to dress in their holiday best and celebrate the season. Families will also enjoy an exclusive Imperial Evening inside a private Viennese palace and learn to waltz, and they can take part in a scavenger hunt in Bratislava’s Old Town.

For something a little different but no less magical, Tauck’s brand-new “Earth Journeys” cruise, created by Tauck and BBC Earth, is tough to beat for nature lovers. The seven-night sail aboard the luxurious Le Soléal takes passengers through Alaska’s fabled Inside Passage, surrounded by some of the most stunning and wildlife-rich scenery on earth. The excursions are all about appreciating the flora and fauna, as well as immersing guests in local and natural history. What teen wouldn’t love a canoe safari, sled dog experience, crab fishing and getting up close to the majestic birds at the Alaska Raptor Center? The journey also includes visit to an ancient Indian village, and Sitka National Historic Park. There’s a naturalist onboard too, who shares stories about Alaskan grizzly bears and conservation efforts, among other highlights.

Like to plan ahead? Look for Tauck’s new seven-night family riverboat “Douro Discovery” in Portugal in 2020, offering two nights in Lisbon and the UNESCO World Heritage city of Porto, and five nights on the Douro River aboard a brand-new purpose-built riverboat for just 84 guests.

Look out for the S.S. Bon Voyage , launching in April 14. Formerly the R iver Royale , the S.S. Bon Voyage has had a complete bow-to-stern facelift and boy, does she look marvelous. Guests will enjoy a redesigned top deck with added swimming pool and lounge area, as well as an adjacent casual dining venue with chef-led cooking classes. Inside, four new suites will be introduced, as well as marble bathrooms throughout the ship, and all finished in the elevated design aesthetic synonymous with Uniworld cruising.

Uniworld’s Generation Collection is ideal for families and offers activities and amenities on selected dates and itineraries designed specifically for families with children ages four years old and up. All departures are scheduled during winter and summer breaks, there’s 25 percent off for travelers ages 4 to 17 when traveling with an adult. Score! For these trips there are 15 departures spread across six cruises: Gems of Northern Italy, Paris & Normandy, Delightful Danube & Prague, Castles Along the Rhine (new for 2019), Classic Christmas Markets and Parisian Royal Holiday. Beatrice , launched last year, has connecting cabins perfect for families, and will host a Generations cruise on an Enchanting Danube & Prague itinerary, with departures on July 15, July 24 and July 29.

Onboard activities for kids are as varied as they are fun. Events like dining with the captain or learning to make desserts and other tasty treats with the ship’s chef and pastry chef will spark imagination. Ashore, they’ll take an Alice in Wonderland -themed tour inside Rouen’s 500-year-old Great Clock; visit the forests of Speyer to climb through the trees and play on rope bridges, nets and ziplines; go on a treasure hunt at the Louvre; take a spooky ghost walk in Venice; and participate in glass blowing and mask making on Venice’s island of Giudecca. And really, what better way is there to bring history alive than with a trip to the beaches of Normandy, or inspire a budding young artist than with a visit to Monet’s home and gardens in Giverny?

Also debuting in 2019 are three itineraries on the Yangtze River aboard the Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer , a new standard for cruising in China with plush interiors and the largest cabins and suites on the river, all with private balconies. The ship carries just 124 passengers with a 1:1 staff to guest ratio, the highest on the river. Also onboard are an observation deck, a two-floor theater, library, spa and fitness center. Choose from the 11-day Highlights of China & The Yangtze, 14-day China, Tibet and The Yangtze, and 18-day Grand China and The Yangtze.

In 2014, the cruise line pioneered its included Kids Club for children ages 4-15. A-ROSA offers over 70 family cruises this year, featuring trained supervisors leading Kids Club programs up to three times daily, special family excursions, favorite kids’ meals, and fun-filled activities such as pizza-making classes, shipboard treasure hunts, crafts, movies, and games. Children 15 years old and under cruise free in select cabins or receive 30% off their fare across other stateroom categories.

In 2022, A-ROSA launched the 280-passenger A-ROSA SENA , which is equipped with many unique features for families and multigenerational groups. There is no minimum age to sail on the line’s European river voyages, and more than 1,560 children cruised with CroisiEurope last year. FAMILY FRIENDLY, MULTI-GENERATIONAL EUROPE RIVER CRUISES Connecting families and Europe together for lasting memories for those of all ages.

Today, we're going to talk about why river cruising, specifically, provides a wonderful opportunity for families to celebrate a special occasion together. Traveling as a family allows those of all ages to discover different cultures, lifestyles and cuisines from around the world, and it is hassle-free when enjoyed on a European river cruise. No longer are European river cruises a "no, no" for families. Family river cruises on the Danube, Rhine, Rhone and Saone are now available throughout the summer months on several excellent river cruise lines including: Tauck, Uniworld, and in a few cases, Avalon Waterways. We mention these three specific cruise lines because they're currently the only ones offering specific family river cruise departures during the summer. In some cases, depending on the age(s) of your children, you may not need to go on a specific family-focused cruise. Our river cruise experts will work with you to determine what your needs are so that you're comfortable in your selection process, and know the one selected is the right cruise for your family. The "family" friendly river cruise itineraries are the same as the non-family departures, but there are many added features for the younger set. These events or kid-friendly tours are not on normal cruises including medieval games, dinners at unique castles, chocolate tastings, bicycle rides, cooking classes, and more. In addition to many fun things for the kids, the normal tours are itinerary tours and are also available for older children and their parents to enjoy; parents can work with the ship's onboard cruise director to determine what is best for their children.

The two major lines that offer family-friendly departures, Tauck and Uniworld are also all-inclusive, which makes family river cruises even more affordable. Once on board, you AND your kids pay for absolutly nothing, not even tipping. And, on shore, everything is included as well, so you know up front what your costs are before you ever leave home. AmaWaterways has family-friendly balcony staterooms. In 2016 and 2017, AmaWaterways introduced a limited number of family-friendly balcony staterooms containing 3 guests on the AmaStella, AmaViola and AmaKristina. This was a first in the river cruise industry as most staterooms are generally designed for two people. There are only about 12 such staterooms on each of the new ships, so you do need to reserve very early as they are certainly in high demand. In addition to the triple berth staterooms, these ships also feature connecting staterooms, enabling a family of five to be as close as they need to be. The AmaSerena and AmaViola sail the Danube throughout the river cruise season. We think a family river cruise along one of these fabulous European rivers is a history lesson for all. The memories created when you visit to places like Heidelberg Castle, Strasbourg, Koln Cathedral, Amsterdam, Lyon, Budapest or Prague will last a lifetime. Imagine the dinner conversations after your family enjoys a concert in Vienna's Schonbrunn Castle, or walk the streets of the Champs Elysée in Paris? And best of all? You pack and unpack only once!. When we look back on life I would venture a guess that there are personal, family and travel memories that stand out to each of us. I remember family dinners, both with my folks and my kids that evoke many funny memories — you know like, “eat it or you can’t get up,” “drink your milk or no dessert,” and others. I especially remember one dinner in Honolulu at a prominent restaurant where my youngest son was suffering from a bit of jet lag. The family (9 or 10 of us) were talking when we heard a loud “thud.” As our eyes turned toward the end of the table, we saw him with head smack in the middle of his plate of food, sound asleep — what a picture that paints to this very day. For those fortunate enough to travel as a family, you know what I mean when I say, "traveling as a family creates some of the most enduring memories; memories that transcend the decades and last forever." So true.

Because river cruising is relatively new, the opportunities for family travel are a bit limited, but expanding each year. As we noted above, the two best companies — Uniworld and Tauck — provide family-friendly river cruises in Europe during the summer and winter break periods. Both lines offer 7-night Danube and Rhine River cruises geared to families of all ages, visiting places like Salzburg, Vienna , Durnstein, Budapest and Bratislava. Uniworld and Tauck also offer fun-filled 7-night river cruises in France , both with or without Paris land options. The first is an historical journey through Normandy, the second a delightful cruise on the Rhône through Provence. There are trips especially for solo travellers

Finding alone time is increasingly easy on river cruise ships, many of which are going all out to cater to solo travellers. Take Riviera Travel River Cruises – every year the line operates a number of sailings designed specifically for solos. On these cruises, all cabins are single-occupancy only and there are no single supplement charges. In 2023, Riviera’s solo-friendly cruises include sailings along the Danube, Douro, Rhine, Rhône and Seine.

Ganga Vilas offers the world’s longest river cruise

Does disembarkation day always come too soon? Consider opting for one of the growing number of longer cruises. Ganga Vilas currently offers the world’s longest river cruise – a 51-day sailing along 27 rivers in India and Bangladesh onboard the luxurious 18-suite Ganga Vilas riverboat. The downside? These cruises don’t come cheap – prices start at around £26,000 ($32,000) per person.

CroisiEurope offers paddlewheel cruises on two European rivers

Paddlewheel ships aren’t just found on US rivers. CroisiEurope is the only cruise line to run paddlewheel cruises on two European rivers – the Elbe and the Loire. Other boats are few and far between – these rivers are notoriously shallow but the latest paddlewheel technology means CroisiEurope’s boats can sail these stretches of water year-round.

A-ROSA SENA is one of Europe’s most family-friendly ships

River cruises are often seen as the preserve of couples, but change is afoot. In 2022, A-ROSA River Cruises launched A-ROSA SENA , the only river cruise ship in Europe to have a dedicated kids’ club room. AmaWaterways’ AmaMagna has a theatre area where children (and big kids) can watch movies and play games consoles, and Uniworld’s Generation Collection cruises offer kid-friendly activities and excursions.

Viking Cruises’ fleet has both ocean and river boats

If you’re a fan of cruising, what could be better than pairing a river cruise with an ocean one? For example, combine a sail along the Douro, which cuts across Spain and Portugal and finishes at the Atlantic coast, with an ocean-going cruise sailing out of Porto. Doing so is easy, especially if you sail with a line like Viking Cruises , which has a fleet including both ocean and river boats.

AmaWaterways’ Colour of Provence cruise focuses on Black heritage in Paris

Europe’s rivers are lined with ancient cities and landmarks, but several cruise lines are delving deeper in Europe’s history by tackling a more diverse range of subjects. AmaWaterways is a great example – in 2023 its Colour of Provence cruise includes a three-night visit to Paris which focuses on the city’s Black heritage, while another AmaWaterways cruise along the Rhône river includes a Black heritage tour of Marseille.

Excursions are varied, with smaller groups

Because river cruising ships are smaller, the chances of having to join tour groups the size of a Glastonbury crowd are slim, and excursions are more intimate. A case in point is European Waterways , known for their passion for slow travel. Excursions include a tour of the Château de la Motte led by the resident Baroness and visits to the Dalwhinnie whisky distillery, which you’ll travel to in an air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz minibus.

You can explore the Amazon Basin with Seabourn

More river cruise lines are heading to remote rivers. One example is Seabourn . In 2023 the line launches a 14-day Wild Guianas To The Amazon Basin cruise, which sails along Brazil’s Guajará River, a tributary of the Amazon. Excursions include a trip to meet local Indigenous groups – a reminder that Amazon river cruises are great options for getting off the beaten path.

Avalon Waterways has some of the largest windows on a river cruise

River cruise ships make excellent use of space, and we’re increasingly seeing this applied to windows. If you don’t manage to bag a balcony suite, don’t panic – it’s highly likely that you’ll have floor to ceiling windows. If you’re a stickler for a fantastic view, consider sailing with Avalon Waterways – their windows are some of the largest on a river cruise ship, and their Panorama Suites have the widest opening, wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows in river cruising.

American Queen Voyages has launched exciting new itineraries

American river cruises have become incredibly popular in recent years, and in 2023 the American Queen Voyages launches the longest itineraries offered by this historic cruise line. The 23-day itineraries (the first one departs in July) will sail along the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers and take in lesser-known destinations such as Maysville in Kentucky, Madison in Indiana, Point Pleasant in West Virginia and Marietta in Ohio.

You might meet your hero onboard an AmaWaterways ship

River cruising companies are going all out to provide deeper insights into the places their ships sail through. One example is National Geographic Expeditions, which recently announced that it will join forces with AmaWaterways and launch several National Geographic Expeditions-chartered departures in 2024. Onboard experts – all of whom will be familiar with itinerary destinations – will include photographers, authors and explorers. 

You can sail along the Hudson River with American Cruise Lines

Fancy sailing past the Empire State Building? Now you can – kind of. American Cruise Lines is the only cruise line that offers sailings along the mighty Hudson, along with several other lesser-known rivers, including the Napa and San Joaquin Rivers in California.

You can combine rail and water with Uniworld

In 2022 Uniworld launched cruises combining Danube River sailings with trips on Golden Eagle Luxury Trains. These rail and river cruise packages offer guests the chance to take a five-day train journey through central Europe before boarding the ship. Expect more cruise lines to combine these modes of transport in the coming years.

Experts will join passengers onboard Ponant ships

Uniworld’s decision to combine sailing with luxury railway trips onboard Golden Eagle’s trains is a sign of the times – we’ll see more collaborations designed to enhance guests’ experience. In 2023 Ponant is collaborating with Smithsonian Journeys to offer sailings with onboard experts, such as world-renowned climate specialist Steve Paton, who will provide further insight into areas such as the San Blas archipelago.

Riverside Luxury Cruises is the new kid on the block

River cruising might sound like a crowded market, but the launch of Riverside Luxury Cruises in April 2023 proves that there’s always room for more. This new line launched with one ship – Riverside Mozart – and offers cruises starting in Vienna, Budapest and Passau. The ship’s rooftop bar looks pretty special, although we’re equally excited about the cuisine, inspired by regions the ship sails through.

CroisiEurope is the only river cruise line operating on Lake Kariba in Southern Africa. There are two cruise ships to choose from – African Dream and Zimbabwean Dream. Both ships accommodate 16 passengers in eight cabins, and there’s a rooftop bar and restaurant from which guests can soak up the views.

Most river cruises are truly all-inclusive

We’ve all come across cruise lines which claim to be all-inclusive but are actually anything but. These days, more cruise lines are going all out to offer passengers better value for money by including everything from premium drinks to excursions. Scenic River Cruises is a great example – cruise prices include flights from the UK, transfers, premium drinks, all meals (including fine dining ones) and excursions.

You’re unlikely to feel seasick on a river cruise

River cruises will take you to the end of the world (almost)

River cruises can take you to some of the world’s most remote places, as well as waterways which simply aren’t explored very often. CroisiEurope, for example, is the only operator to offer cruises on Spain’s Guadalquivir River (pictured at Seville), while the Heritage Line’s new Upper Mekong cruise, which sets sail in August 2023, will focus on remote areas of Laos.

There are no interior cabins on river cruise ships – all cabins face outwards and most have floor-to-ceiling windows. Cruise lines make the most of the space in innovative ways, too. On several Uniworld vessels, for example, mirrors are actually concealed televisions. The cabins at the rear of riverboats are often the cheapest – but if you’re a light sleeper, remember that this is because the engines are located here. 

Cruise lines are investing in air-filtering technology

One example is Amadeus River Cruises . In May 2023 the line launched Amadeus Riva, which has a hi-tech air filtration system with a two-stage purification system capable of removing aerosols – including any containing microscopic virus particles – from interior spaces.

It's easier to avoid the crowds

There are no (or at least fewer) boring transfers

On ocean cruises, the excitement about seeing the local landmark/record-breaking attraction/ancient site quickly dissipates when there’s a one-hour bus journey between you and the site in question. Not so with river cruising, simply because of the increased accessibility. A great example is the iconic arch in St Louis, Missouri (pictured) –  this feat of engineering is just a 10-minute walk from the dock used by river boats.

DOWNTOWN — You won’t have to leave your dog at home next time you explore Chicago’s waterways thanks to a local boat tour company.

Mercury, Chicago’s Skyline Cruiseline, will launch its popular Canine Cruise series Saturday. It will offer dog-friendly boat tours every weekend through Oct. 13.

The cruises leave at 11:15 a.m. Saturday-Sunday from Mercury’s perch along the Riverwalk, 112 E. Wacker Drive.

This tour showcases Chicago’s skyline from the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. Guides highlight Downtown skyscrapers and share details about each building or landmark, along with fun facts about dogs and dog-friendly spots.

Dogs can sit on your lap, in a seat or on the deck. The cruise offers safe outdoor seating and water bowls for pets, according to the company.

Ticket prices start at $42 for adults, $19 for children ages 5-15 and $10 per dog, with children younger than 5 able to ride for free. Priority boarding is $47 for adults and $24 for kids.

In October, the Howl-O-Ween Canine Cruise will feature pumpkin dog treats and prizes for the best costumes.

I've taken 4 Disney cruises without kids. Here's why they're actually the perfect adults-only getaway.

• Out of the 15 cruises I've been on, Disney Cruise Line is my favorite company to travel with.
• Disney cruises offer the perfect getaway for adults without children.
• From animation classes and private islands to Broadway-style shows, I never run out of things to do.

After taking over 15 cruises on most of the major lines , one stands out as my favorite company to travel with — Disney Cruise Line. Disney cruises combine what I love about the theme parks with relaxation and stellar dining, making them the perfect getaway.

I also love that Disney continues to invest in its cruise line. For example, the company's newest ship, Disney Treasure , plans to embark on its maiden voyage in December.

And next year, Disney Destiny and Disney Adventure will set sail for the first time. The company also invested between $250 million and $400 million in a new island in the Bahamas, which I was lucky enough to visit.

Although some may think of Disney Cruise Line as a company that caters to kids, I've had an incredible time on adults-only vacations with my sister, mother, friends, and husband. Here's why I think Disney cruises are the perfect choice for travelers without children.

I’m never bored on a Disney ship.

On most of the cruises I've been on, the main activities include eating and drinking. However, that's not the case on Disney cruises.

In addition to having great pools, Disney ships are known for having a wide variety of activities throughout the day. My favorites include trivia, mixology classes, panel discussions with Disney animators, and animation classes.

The food is by far the best I’ve had at sea, and I’ll always splurge on the specialty restaurants.

Food plays a big role in determining where I vacation, and I've had some of the most incredible meals on board Disney ships. In addition to the food, the restaurants are well-themed and detailed. While there are plenty of elevated eats, there are also casual bites, like pizza, and Disney favorites, including Mickey waffles.

While the main dining rooms are delicious — and included with the cruise fare — I'll always splurge on one of the specialty restaurants that charge an additional fee.

These upcharge restaurants offer a more intimate experience with super personalized service and a greater variety of dining options. My favorite is Palo, which is open for both brunch and dinner. Here, I've enjoyed fresh pasta, standout wine, and high-quality wagyu.

I love the themed bars, and the drinks are surprisingly affordable.

While Disney doesn't offer a drink package that includes cocktails, the well-themed bars are worth the splurge.

From a Star Wars-themed watering hole to a Peter Pan-themed speakeasy, I really enjoy the inventive cocktail programs and immersive settings. Each bar also has its own unique themed drinks, which keeps things exciting.

As a regular at Disney World, I was also surprised to find that drinks are much more affordable on a Disney Cruise, with prices consistent across the ships I've been on.

For example, my favorite Dole Whip spiked with rum was $9 on board, compared to the exact same version priced at $14 at Disney World .

There are plenty of adults-only spaces.

While I tend to spend much of my day at the lively main pool, which features Disney movies and live entertainment, there are also plenty of adults-only spaces, including pool areas exclusive to guests 18 and older.

Some ships even have bar districts with multiple venues exclusive to adults.

The rooms are spacious and practical.

I've found the rooms on Disney cruises to be the most spacious — and practical in design — I've encountered.

Most rooms on Disney ships also have a split bathroom, which means the toilet area is separate from the shower. This is a vacation lifesaver when multiple adults are trying to get ready at once.

There are also plenty of opportunities to enjoy Disney Magic.

I love Disney ships because, from dressing up for pirate night to meeting my favorite characters, there are plenty of opportunities to feel like a kid again.

The shows on board are Broadway-quality.

I'm a sucker for live entertainment, and each Disney ship offers at least one Broadway-style production. From "Frozen" to "Beauty and the Beast," I always make sure to check out these high-quality musicals, which are included in the price of the cruise.

Disney’s private islands are very relaxing.

I've been to several cruise-line private islands, but Disney's are by far my favorite. Castaway Cay , located in the Bahamas, exudes relaxation. The island is home to one of my favorite activities, the Castaway 5k, which is included in the cruise fare and allows participants to earn an exclusive race medal.

Disney's newest island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, is located near the southern tip of Eleuthera in The Bahamas. The beaches here blew me away and were some of the best I've experienced after dozens of trips to the Caribbean and Mexico.

Disney Cruise Line is the perfect adults-only vacation, and I can't wait to plan another trip.

As a big fan of the parks, Disney Cruise Line takes those magical elements and upgrades them at sea with incredible food, live entertainment, and relaxation — making for the perfect adults-only vacation.

Its ships are home to some of the most exciting, highly themed lounge options I've encountered, and I love the Broadway-quality productions. While on board, I'm able to do as much or as little as I want.
