15 Top-Rated Things to Do in Annecy

Written by Lisa Alexander Updated Dec 23, 2023

Annecy has all the trappings of a fairy-tale scene, with white swans gliding through peaceful waterways and a backdrop of snowcapped mountains.

Adding to the enchantment, the Old Town (Vieille Ville) is a winding maze of mostly pedestrian, cobblestone streets lined with graceful buildings. Pastel-painted houses feature ornamental wrought-iron balconies and colorful geranium-bedecked windowsills. Potted flowers also adorn the town's canal footbridges and the elegant lakeside promenade.

Visitors will enjoy strolling through the town to discover its storybook charm. Often called the "Venice of the Alps" because of its picturesque waterways, Annecy is a gem of the historic Savoy region at the heart of the northern French Alps.

Nearby are breathtaking nature sites and world-class ski resorts. The magnificent scenery inspires outdoor activities, while cozy chalets and old-fashioned restaurants welcome tourists in traditional alpine style.

Plan your sightseeing and learn about the best places to visit with our list of the top things to do in Annecy.

Annecy's most photographed monument, the 12th-century Palais de l'Île stands on an island in the Canal du Thiou. Tourists will find the best views and photo-ops of the Palais de l'Île on the Pont sur le Thiou (bridge). From this vantage point, the palace appears fortress-like with its sturdy quadrangular construction resembling the bow of a ship.

The Palais de l'Ile first served as a prison, but by the mid-14th century, the palace was instead used as a coin-minting workshop. In the 15th century, the palace became the residence of the Dukes of Savoy and in the 16th century was converted to the Palace of Justice (Law Courts).

Open to the public every day year-round, the Palais de l'Ile now houses a small museum that displays exhibits about the regional architecture. Visitors can also see some of the old prison cells. Guided tours are available.

Musée-Chateau d'Annecy

Perched on a hill above the town, the Musée-Château d'Annecy affords stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The castle was built in phases from the medieval to the Renaissance period. During the 13th and 14th century, the Counts of Geneva resided here.

Today, the château's museum covers a wide range of disciplines, including regional history, medieval sculpture, landscape painting, and contemporary art. There are also temporary exhibits throughout the year.

The Musée-Château d'Annecy is open every day year-round, except for holidays and Tuesdays. Guided tours are available.

Blooming flowers along Lac d'Annecy

The Lac d'Annecy beckons visitors with its unspoiled alpine beauty and myriad of recreational opportunities. This shimmering expanse of crystal-clear waters is considered the cleanest lake in Europe, plus the scenery is sublime. Snow-dusted mountain peaks provide an inspiring backdrop for walking, cycling , sunbathing, swimming , and boating .

The main beach of Annecy Lake is the Plage d'Albigny (Avenue du Petit Port), which has a spacious grassy area for sunbathing and a path for walking or cycling. Albigny Beach is immaculately manicured, with flowers and plants bordering the lawn. This beach has public restrooms and showers, as well as a picnic area . Lakeside staircases allow easy access for swimming. In July and August, lifeguards are on duty from 11am until 7pm.

Next to the Plage d'Albigny within the Parc Charles-Bosson, the Plage de l'Impérial (Avenue d'Albigny) attracts many visitors for relaxation and outdoor activities. The shoreline is a mixture of grass and fine sand. Well equipped with facilities, the Plage de l'Impérial includes a restaurant, picnic area, badminton courts, ping-pong tables, and beach volleyball courts .

Families with kids appreciate the Impérial Beach for its wading pool, playground, mini-golf course, and children's games. During the high season, lifeguards are on duty.

Rue Sainte-Claire in Annecy

Near the Palais de l'Île, the Rue Sainte-Claire is the place to go in Annecy for shopping and dining. One of the town's main streets, the lively Rue Sainte-Claire is brimming with old-world charm. Arcaded townhouses dating from the 16th to 18th century have retained their historic character. Some of the houses feature lovingly tended flower-bedecked windowsills.

The arcaded area of the street's townhouses is filled with upscale retail stores, trendy cafés, fancy ice-cream shops, and gourmet dining establishments. Tourists will enjoy browsing the boutiques, grabbing a gelato, taking a coffee break, or stopping for a meal at one of the quaint restaurants.

Eglise Saint-Maurice

Designated as a historical monument, the Eglise Saint-Maurice is the oldest church in Annecy. This 15th-century church was formerly a chapel for the Dominican convent. By the 19th century, the building became the town's parish church.

The church exterior reveals distinctive Flamboyant Savoyard architectural elements, while the interior expresses a more somber ambience. The impressively vast nave was designed in the typical style of Dominican churches to accommodate a large congregation.

Noteworthy works of art include the elaborately carved pulpit from the 18th century and a painting of the Virgin in Glory.

The church continues to host religious services and is open to the public for visits year-round, free of charge.

Address: Place Saint-Maurice, Annecy

Cathedrale Saint-Pierre

The Cathédrale Saint-Pierre is reached from a narrow side street and is somewhat hidden from view, but it merits taking the time to discover. Built between 1535 and 1538, this church became the cathedral of the Bishops of Geneva, who sought refuge in Annecy during the Protestant Reformation.

The harmonious proportions of Italian Renaissance architecture distinguish the building's exterior, in particular the Tuscan pilasters. Gothic style predominates in the cathedral's interior, with the exception of the Neoclassical choir, which dates to the 18th century. An exquisite rose window and three other stained-glass windows illuminate the sanctuary.

Since 1822, the church has served as the cathedral of the Diocese of Annecy.

The Cathédrale Saint-Pierre is open to the public for visits year-round, free of charge.

Address: Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Annecy

Pont des Amours (Lovers' Bridge)

In an idyllic setting beneath a canopy of leafy trees, the fittingly named "Lovers' Bridge" spans the Canal du Vassé that flows from the Lac d'Annecy. This arched ironwork bridge seems to inspire romance with its majestic lakeside scenery.

The Pont des Amours is a popular spot for photo-ops, especially for engagement and wedding portraits. A short walk away from the bridge is the Jardins de l'Europe park.

Champs de Mars

This seven-hectare Champs de Mars borders the Lac d'Annecy and the Jardins de l'Europe, so the views are superb. The Champs de Mars is also known as "le Pâquier" ("pasturage" in the local dialect) because domestic animals once came to graze here.

Nowadays, this expansive green space is a favorite spot for locals to enjoy picnics and recreational activities on sunny days. Several paved cycling paths traverse the Champs de Mars.

Families with young kids will have fun at the Champs de Mars. Children love the park's mini horses and small train. Youngsters (and anyone young at heart) will relish the chance to glide around the turquoise waters of Lake Annecy. On the lake side of the park, visitors can find pedal boats and row boats available for rent by the hour.

During summertime, the Champs de Mars hosts cultural events such as the Fête de la Musique (Festival of Music) on June 21st and the Fête du Lac (Festival of the Lake) held every year on the first Saturday of August. The Fête du Lac is Europe's largest fireworks show.

There are also fireworks shows presented for the Fête Nationale du 14 Juillet (Bastille Day), along with an orchestra performance.

Jardins de l'Europe

The Jardins de l'Europe is another beautiful leafy park beside the lake. This luxuriant flower-filled green space is found next to the Pont des Amours and offers views of the Chateau d'Annecy . The Eglise Saint-Maurice is a short walk away from the gardens.

If visiting Annecy during the Fête Nationale du 14 Juillet (Bastille Day), the Jardins de l'Europe is one of the best places to experience the festivities. This lovely park hosts some of the city's July 14th celebrations.

Basilique de la Visitation

Crowning a hilltop above the Old Town, this Neo-Romanesque basilica is worth visiting just for the views. To arrive here requires a steep and somewhat strenuous hike from the Old Town; the effort is rewarded with sweeping panoramas of the landscape surrounding Annecy.

The basilica's unembellished exterior contrasts with the ornate interior featuring blue Savoy marble columns in the nave, Venetian-enameled mosaics in the apse, and vibrant stained-glass windows that depict the story of Saint François de Sales.

The Basilique de la Visitation is open to the public every day year-round, free of charge. Guided tours are available.

Address: 20 Avenue de la Visitation, Annecy

Eglise Notre-Dame de Liesse

Except for the 14th- to 15th-century bell tower, the Eglise Notre-Dame de Liesse was built in the 19th century after the original monument at this site was destroyed during the French Revolution. The simple facade and domed interior with Corinthian columns are typical of Sardinian Neoclassical architecture.

This style of building design developed between 1830 and 1850 when the Savoy state was under the rule of the Kingdom of Sardinia.

The church is open to the public for visits every day year-round, free of charge. Mass is celebrated here on Sundays.

Address: Place Notre-Dame 74000 Annecy

Eglise Saint-François de Sales

This 17th-century church contains the tombs of two important religious figures of the region: Saint Joan of Chantal and Saint Francis de Sales. With its Italianate facade and richly adorned Baroque interior, the church is a wonderful example of Counter-Reformation-era architecture.

The Eglise Saint-François de Sales is an active parish church that serves the local community. The church is also open to the public for visits year-round, free of charge.

Address: Place Saint François, Annecy

Avenue d'Albigny

Beginning near the Jardins de l'Europe and extending to the Parc Charles-Bosson, the Avenue d'Albigny is a scenic stretch of shoreline alongside the Lac d'Annecy. Tall, leafy plane trees shade the lakeside pedestrian path, which is a pleasant place for a leisurely ramble while admiring the picture-perfect lakeside scenery.

Every year on the second Saturday of October (from 9am until 6pm), the streets of Annecy become the scene of a folkloric festival. Celebrated since the Middle Ages, the Retour des Alpages ( Return from the Pastures ) marks the moment when the herds of alpine cows return from their summer pastures in the mountains to spend the autumn and winter season in the valley.

A parade of cows begins the convivial event, which continues with folk music performances, artisan craft demonstrations, and samplings of regional food products.

The parade begins at the Rue Sainte-Claire and winds through the Vieille Ville. Musical entertainment takes place at squares throughout the town.

Steps away from the Château d'Annecy, the Musée du Film d'Animation (18 Avenue de Tresum) presents interesting exhibits about animation cinema.

The collection helps visitors understand the animation creation process through thematic topics such as lighting and the illusion of movement. Exhibits also show images of animated cinema spanning the past century, providing perspective on the evolution of the art form.

The museum is open year-round every day, except Tuesdays and holidays. Admission is free of charge. Guided tours are available.

Address: 18 Avenue de Trésum, Annecy

Chateau de Menthon Saint-Bernard

About a 20-minute drive from Annecy, this dreamy castle stands on a hilltop overlooking Lac d'Annecy. The Château de Menthon Saint-Bernard dates to the 12th century and has been home to the esteemed Menthon family for 23 generations (almost 1,000 years).

The Château de Menthon Saint-Bernard is open to the public for visits year-round, for an admission fee. In July and August, the château is open every day from 12pm until 7pm. From September through mid-November and April through June, the château is open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 2pm until 6pm.

Because of its idyllic setting, the Château de Menthon Saint-Bernard is often used as a venue for weddings and receptions. The gardens and outdoor terraces of the château may be visited for a small admission fee.

Address: Allée du Château, 74290 Menthon-Saint-Bernard

 Chateau de Montrottier

The Château de Montrottier is nestled in the village of Lovagny just 12 kilometers from Annecy, about a 20-minute drive. In its magical setting of wooded hillsides, this turreted medieval fortress resembles the images of storybook castles. Walking through the castle's grand halls and ancient dungeon feels like stepping back in time.

Weddings ceremonies are often held on the castle grounds, and receptions are hosted in the Guards' Room.

The Château de Montrottier is open to the public from April through October. In April, May, June, September, and October, the château welcomes visitors Wednesday through Sunday. In July and August, the château is open every day. The admission fee includes a guided tour in French. Guided tours in English must be requested in advance.

Address: 60 Allée du Château, 74330 Lovagny

Built in the 16th century, this Renaissance castle is a rare example of Italian architecture in the Savoy region. The Château de Clermont was the summer residence of Monseigneur Gallois Regard who had familial connections with the Popes in Rome.

The château impresses visitors with its monumentally proportioned facade and graceful arcaded galleries that frame a quiet interior courtyard. The grounds also include a picnic area.

Tourists may visit the Château de Clermont from late May through October. In May, June, September, and October, the château is open on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. In July and August, the château is open every day. Guided tours are available.

Address: Château de Clermont, 74270 Clermont

15 Best Things to Do in Annecy (France)

One of France’s prettiest medieval towns is right on the shore of Europe’s cleanest lake. It just doesn’t get much better than this. Annecy is laced with canals and the historic streets have fun passageways darting off to the sides.

The lake is glorious, bordered on all sides by mountains and with crystalline waters that call your name on hot summer days.

Half the time you may lose yourself staring at scenery – Lac d’Annecy has a year-round gossamer haze – but there’s a breathless amount of activities to do and places to see. This is Europe’s outdoor sports capital after all.

Lets explore the best things to do in Annecy :

1. Lac d’Annecy

Lac d'Annecy

Whatever your reason for coming to Annecy, “Europe’s Cleanest Lake” will be in your plans.

Lake Annecy has the quality of staying peaceful at all times of year despite all the activity on its shores If you come in summer you can’t be blamed for passing hours lazing by the transparent waters at one of several beaches around the shore, in awe of the Alpine landscapes.

Two beaches, Plage la Brune at Veyrier-du-Lac and Plage Municipal in Saint-Jorioz, have earned the Blue Flag for the undeniable quality of the water and the facilities like restaurants, play areas and lifeguard patrol.

2. Vieille Ville

Vieille Ville

Annecy has earned the eminent French label “Ville d’Art”, and just within its compact old town there are 21 historical monuments to be found.

The medieval core on the Thiou River is extremely pretty, with canals, arcaded pedestrian streets and exciting little passageways that have you fumbling for your camera every few steps.

You could put yourself in the capable hands of a guide for the complete inside track on the city’s history and the unexpected vestiges that constantly catch your attention.

On Tuesday there’s a food market in the old centre, which adds real colour and energy to the old streets.

3. Jardins de l’Europe

Jardins de l'Europe

It’s hard to conceive of a municipal park blessed with better panoramas anywhere in the world.

The Jardins del’Europe are in front of Annecy’s city hall, and before the embankment and Vassé canal were built had actually been a marshy island outside the city.

In the 19th century the city plotted an English garden, and more than 600 deciduous trees were planted around the statue of the pioneering chemist Claude-Louis Berthollet.

In any weather you have to walk down to the water, sit back on a bench and feast your eyes on the peaks around the lake, out to La Tournette high above the southeast shore.

4. Pont Des Amours

Pont Des Amours

There are many picturesque bridges in Annecy, but when it comes to scenery none can compete with this one on the lakeside.

Pont des Amours spans the Vassé canal and connects the Jardins de l’Europe with the Jacquet Promenade, a walkway blessed with yet more sumptuous views of the lake and mountains.

The story goes that any lovers who kiss while on the bridge will be together for life.

The mountain vistas make it a very romantic spot, but you should also look back towards the city along the canal, which is flanked by trees and has charming jetties where small boats are moored.

5. Palais de l’Île

Palais de l'Île

You won’t be the first person to have stood on Pont Perrière for a photo of this fortified palace in the middle of the Thiou, but you have to do it anyway.

Although it has been rebuilt several times in its extensive history, the complex dates to the 1100s and for hundreds of years it was a residence handed down the noble families of the County  of Geneva.

From the 17th century the palace became a prison, and then after the Revolution it had many different functions, as a home for veterans, a warehouse and barracks.

Today it contains exhibitions about Annecy’s architecture and heritage, and you can take a look around the old courtroom, dungeon, cells and chapel.

6. Cathedral and Basilica

Saint-Pierre Cathedra

Saint-Pierre Cathedral is also admired for the way it interacts with the water, and is partly built over the canals.

Saint-Pierre is a lovely renaissance building, constructed in the 1500s, and if it seems a bit subtle for a cathedral that’s because it wasn’t made one until 1825. Make the steep walk up to the Basilique de la Visitation, high to the south of Annecy.

The tower of this 19th-century church can be seen for miles around and possesses one of the best local views of the city.

Inside are the tombs of two saints, Francis de Sales and Jane Frances de Chantal.

7. Château d’Annecy

Château d'Annecy

The seat of the Counts of Geneva, Château d’Annecy dates to between the 12th and 16th centuries, and there are a few good reasons to climb the steep hill up to this building.

You can spend a while pottering around the castle’s towers and halls, and there’s a museum giving you a window on the lifestyle of the itinerant rulers of Savoy.

Poke through the large displays of medieval furniture, beds, chest chairs and tables, as well as more precious illuminated manuscripts.

A lot of visitors opt not to enter the château and instead admire one of the definitive views of Annecy from the terrace.

8. Gorges du Fier

Gorges du Fier

Minutes west of the city is a marvellous river canyon cut by the Fier River.

Even in the French Alps, which are famous for their natural wonders, the gorge is a must-visit.

That’s down to how accessible it is: There’s a series of walkway suspended 25 metres above the river letting you marvel at the odd shapes create by many years of erosion.

In places the gorge is so narrow that the cliffs almost meet overhead, and you’ll be able to touch the rock face on the other side.

There’s also a free path delivering you to a natural pool where people come to sunbathe and swim in the summer.

9. Château de Montrottier

Château de Montrottier

Combine your trip to the Gorges du Fier with this castle, which looks down on the river.

Château de Montrottier dates to the 13th century and is open during the summer months.

The architecture is impressive, with a tall circular tower dominating the landscape.

But the big story here is the collection of Léon Mares, who was a 19th-century explorer and prolific collector.

Mares hoarded priceless items from around the world and when he passed on specified that he wanted the collection to be presented exactly as he left it.

So the 90-minute tour shows you round masses of historic tapestries, antique weapons, armour, period furniture, ceramics, glassware and the many items he acquired while travelling Asia and Africa.

10. Winter Sport

La Clusaz

Annecy is close enough to resorts like Manigod, La Clusaz, Le Grand Bornand and Saint Jean de Sixt to make it a ski destination.

If you want a more cultured base than a typical village, Annecy is a beautiful place to return to after a day on the slopes and isn’t more than 45 minutes from any of the local ski areas.

They’re all at low altitudes and well-suited to families and newcomers: Manigod for example has 17 kilometres  of wide and an easy slopes, while Le Semnoz offers short-term lift passes by the hour or day, which obviously makes things a lot more flexible.

Highest-rate of all is La Clusaz, with the most challenging runs of all the resorts around Annecy.

11. Watersports

Lake Annecy

A big directory of companies awaits your business at Lake Annecy in the summer, providing almost any watersport under the warm July sun.

Just to reel off the list, there’s waterskiing and wakeboarding for people who need high-speed, motorised exhilaration.

But you can also push off onto these glistening waters on a paddle-boarding adventure or, if you’re really sure of yourself, try open water swimming.

Due to the easy learning curve paddle-boarding is now a hit with families.

Best of all it gives you an opportunity to look up every now and take in those views .

12. Hiking and Cycling

Le Taillefer

Around the lakeshore are a load of viewpoints with spellbinding vistas of the lake and mountains.

Getting up to these lookouts is a joy too, as you ramble through upland pasture, orchards and woodland.

Here’s a few to seek out: Le Taillefer, the Semnoz Plateau, the Laudon Circuit, the Oratory in Entrevernes and the La Frasse Pass.

All are achievable for families and you only need a pair of good shoes.

Lake Annecy also has the ultimate greenway for cyclists, starting in the city, running down the lake’s east shore and ending up in Marlens in the Fauverges Valley 35 kilometres away.

13. Local Food

Emmental de Savoie

Annecy is cheese heaven as the city is in four designated production areas:  Gruyère, Emmental de Savoie , Emmental français est-central and Tomme de Savoie.

And if you’re really curious about cheese you could track down  rural shops Ferme de l’Angelie and Fromagerie du Cruet selling their cheese on the farm premises, along with homemade jams and sausage.

A lot of freshwater fishers make their living around the lake and anchor their boats in the Vassé: The arctic char, perch and trout that they catch could be on your plate at one of Annecy’s fine restaurants on the same day.

14. Aix-les-Bains

Aix-les-Bains

An easy road trip southwest of Annecy is this spa town on the shore of Lac du Bourget, founded by the Romans and wildly popular with Europe’s wealthy in the 19th century.

They came to take the health-giving waters, and during this time fitted Aix-les-Bains with grand Belle Époque hotels, townhouses and a casino.

Whether you feel like gambling, or just to gaze awestruck at the art nouveau interiors, you need to call in at the Casino Grand Cercle.

If you need cosseting after your outdoor excursions at Lake Annecy, Aix-les-Bains is still a top-class spa resort with pools and saunas, and all the restorative treatments you could hope for.

15. Chambéry

Chambéry

Push on a bit further to reach this exquisite Alpine town, with an old centre  that you can’t resist exploring.

The medieval buildings, tight passageways and renaissance arcades have survived the years, but what’s great is that they’re part of a working town, and not kept like museum pieces.

The major sight is the Fontaine des Éléphants, dedicated to Benoît de Boigne, a Napoleonic military man who helped train and lead the Maratha Empire against the British in India.

The Château de Chambéry was another in the roll call of palaces belonging to the Counts of Savoy, and is still a regional government building, but open for tours.

Annecy is a beautiful French Alpine city just 50 km south of Geneva , with a beautiful old town showcasing its unique architecture amongst the canals, as well as an enormous lake and lush mountains all around, waiting for you to explore over one day in Annecy. Nicknamed the Venice of the Alps due to its canals, but with the splendour of Monaco , you won’t be short of things to do on your Annecy itinerary, making for a perfect day trip from Geneva.

How Many Days in Annecy?

There are plenty of things to do in Annecy, however, it’s also a beautiful place to simply walk around and enjoy the pastel colours of the buildings in the old town and the incredible blue of the famous lake and summer sky, interrupted by the green of the surrounding mountains.

In one day, you can explore the old town on foot and enjoy a picnic by the lake, either in the city park or on one of the beautiful beaches on the shores of Lake Annecy.

However, if you have 2 days or a weekend in Annecy, you can also enjoy a hike up to one of the mountain tops in the French Alps for a spectacular view of Lake Annecy, the city and other small towns in the distance.

Ultimately, how many days to spend in Annecy depends on how much time you want to spend adventuring through the magnificent natural landscape.

Getting To & Around Annecy

If you’re taking a day trip to Annecy from Geneva, you can drive South for 50 km on the A41 to be there in less than an hour.

Do be aware that, although Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area, you may still need to show your ID to pass its borders and you have to pay a road tax to drive on Swiss motorways.

You can also find plenty of parking in Annecy, with a 24-hour car park by the central train station.

The train is an equally simple option, with Swiss Railways trains taking just over an hour and departing regularly throughout the day to arrive at Annecy train station, which is within walking distance from the old town and city centre.

Or, you can take a slightly cheaper and shorter journey with Flixbus or Blablabus, or car-share with Blablacar to save even more and take the opportunity of talking to a local to practise your French and find out some of the Haute-Savoie’s hidden gems.

If you prefer to go on an organised Annecy day trip from Geneva, you can take this half-day tour or this half-day tour that takes care of the planning for you.

You can also travel to Annecy from Lyon , with direct trains taking about 2 hours and the drive taking about as much time. This makes visiting from Lyon another great option. You can view train schedules here .

Our route doesn’t venture far out of the old town, which covers an area of a few kilometres, so you can easily walk around it in a day, however, there is a comprehensive bus system in the city, called Sibra, to make it easier to reach the modern centre and outskirts.

You can also rent bikes all over Annecy, with one company, Vélonecy, offering reasonably priced bike rentals per hour or day so you can get around the centre more quickly or venture out on the cycle paths around the lake.

Streets of Annecy at night

1 Day in Annecy Itinerary

A day is the ideal amount of time to spend strolling along the quaint streets and canals of the old town, before visiting a museum and enjoying a picnic by the lake or a boat trip around Lake Annecy to get a different perspective.

Old Town of Annecy

Annecy Old Town is a beautiful area on one edge of the lake, with Le Thiou Canal running through its heart and smaller streams separating the streets, creating an intricate patchwork of bridges and passageways throughout.

As you spend the beginning of your day in Annecy, notice the colourful houses jutting out over some of the canals, including some ‘hôtels particuliers’ owned by notable families of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Enjoy breakfast in one of the many cafes and restaurants in the area or make a mental note of somewhere to come back to for lunch or dinner to enjoy the gastronomic scene in the city and tuck into some fondue or a tartiflette.

If you visit Annecy in February, you might be lucky enough to see the Venetian carnival; a parade of performers in traditional Venetian costumes who silently walk through the old town streets over one weekend. The costumes are remarkable and well worth stopping by for a photo.

However, if you’re visiting in July, you can enjoy arts festivals that descend on the whole city and admire the sculptures hidden around the street corners, as well as performers and poets.

Canals in Annecy

Cathédrale Saint-Pierre

One of the highlights of Annecy’s old town that you can enjoy all year round is Saint Peter’s Cathedral.

Having originally been constructed in the 16th century, due to damage and reparations you can see the contrast between the Gothic interior, shown through the bright stained glass windows and the beautiful symmetry of the Renaissance exterior.

Inside, you can take a moment to cool off from the summer sun while admiring the architecture and catch a glimpse of the enormous 19th-century organ that stands over 7 metres tall.

Pont Morens

As you continue wandering the old town streets, towards the second stop on your Annecy day trip itinerary, pass over the pretty Pont Morens. From this delightful old bridge with a weir, you can enjoy wonderful views along the canal lined with colourful houses and charming bars and restaurants.

Musée-Château d’Annecy

There are three main museums in Annecy: the Musée-Château d’Annecy, Palais de L’Île and Le Musée du Film d’Animation. However, each museum is relatively small and only a short walk from each other, so you can visit at least two of them in one afternoon.

Just a 4-minute walk from Le Thiou is Annecy’s castle which has been converted into a museum. With numerous artefacts as well as centuries-old paintings and a collection of contemporary art, the Musée-Château d’Annecy has a lot to offer everyone with any kind of historical or artistic interest.

Having formerly served as the official residence of the counts of Geneva – there were many noblemen living in the Duchy of Savoy area so the château changed hands over the centuries – the mediaeval castle was expertly restored into the striking building we see today.

Le Palais de L’Île

Heading back down to the centre of the old town and following Le Thiou, you’ll come across a curious medieval castle sitting in the middle of the canal. Built in the 1100s on top of a natural rocky island in the canal, this small palace has served many different purposes over the centuries.

A prison numerous times in the last millennia, the palace was a mint for the Count of Geneva in the 1300s and was transformed into a courthouse in the late 1500s. In the mid-1800s the palace was briefly a home for the elderly, and more recently a boarding school for carpenters and stone carvers.

You can see evidence of the Island Palace’s long history in its architecture, as additions were made over the years to optimise the palace for its new purposes, before undergoing restoration works in the 1980s and 2016.

Now, the palace is an art and history museum, where you can learn about the island’s history, visit its chapel and see how the 14th-century gold and silver mint worked.

Le-Palais-de-LIle

Le Musée du Film d’Animation

Definitely check out the Animated Film Museum, 10 minutes walking southeast of the château or the palace, as it’s free all year long.

Visually detailing the history of animated images and moving pictures, the museum takes visitors on a journey through the history of film and into the minds of the creatives who developed the art form.

Thanks to this museum, which also has a large collection of loaned objects from other countries, Annecy is now a European hub of animation, with its international animated film festival taking place at the beginning of June each year, drawing huge crowds from all over the world.

Lake Annecy

After spending most of your day in the old town and historical sites, it’s time to see the lake.

Shop in Monoprix for a budget-friendly picnic, or find nearby some small shops selling wonderful homemade takeaway meals such as octopus salads, rice dishes and sausages. You can also stop by the Pierre Gay fromagerie for some delicious local cheeses.

Plage des Marquisats

One of the most popular and easy-to-reach beaches on the lake is the Plage des Marquisats, just a 10-minute walk away from the centre towards the South. It can become busy in summer, but this small beach reaching into the crystal clear waters of one of the cleanest lakes in Europe is a great place to have a picnic on a sunny afternoon and venture out for a paddle.

You don’t have to pay to sit at the beach and there are snack bars as well as toilets and showers, so it’s a practical spot to spend a lot of time too.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Annecy on the first Saturday of August, you can watch the huge 2-hour-long fireworks show with music over the lake from here as well!

Jardins de l’Europe

If you’re only having one day in Annecy so don’t want to lug wet clothes around with you, you can have your picnic in the Jardins de l’Europe behind the town hall.

This beautiful park full of trees and small birds gives you stunning views of the lake, with two fountains and a small wild island close to the shore, in front of the statue of French chemist Claude Louis Berthollet from Talloires, on the opposite side of the lake.

The Jardins de l’Europe are a great spot for a picnic as the trees provide a lot of shade and the small friendly birds will come by to pick up your crumbs.

From here you can cross the Pont des Amours to reach Le Pâquier d’Annecy, a large green with walkways through if you want to spend the rest of your afternoon basking in the sun or joining in a football match.

On this side of the lake, there are also a few boat rental agencies so if you have time you can rent a motorboat or pedalo and enjoy your afternoon on the lake.

View of Jardins de l'Europe

Have 2 or 3 Days in Annecy?

One of the best things to do around Annecy is to hike up the surrounding hills and mountains to get a stunning view over the lake. If you walk for 40 minutes or take a bus to the opposite side of the lake, a path comes off Avenue de Chavoires leading up the mountain with options of different routes with varying difficulty.

It takes 1 hour to reach Sous Pré Vernet, 1 hour 15 to Talabar, 2 hours 40 to Mont Veyrier and 2 hours 55 to Mont Baron. Be wary, however, if there are fast and slow routes to the same point, the faster routes will be more direct and thus significantly steeper.

If you’ve got 2 days in Annecy and want to get out and about around the lake, there is a 25 km cycle route around the lake which you can enjoy, or simply follow the winding roads. You can even t ake an organised cycle if you prefer to go with a guide.

Thanks to the Tour de France regularly coming through Annecy, with the famous hairpin bends of the Alpe d’Huez not too far away, the roads are very well-kept and suited for all cyclists regardless of experience.

Another option is to spend one day or at least an afternoon out on the lake, so rent any kind of water transport, from motorboats, speedboats and catamarans to pedalos, kayaks and canoes; there are plenty of ways to enjoy the gorgeous lake, just don’t forget your sunscreen.

If you’re a watersports enthusiast and the wind is favourable, you can even rent wing foils or do stand-up paddle yoga in the lake!

If you’re spending a week in the Alps or more than 3 days, you can also drive for around 20 minutes westwards to spend time exploring the spectacular Fier Gorges, with the amazing Château de Montrottier which you can visit.

You can also time your visit to Annecy with the food market that takes place every Wednesday in the Place des Romains for the freshest of picnics, or to simply see the city streets come alive.

How to get to Annecy

Getting to Annecy will likely involve a few methods of public transport. There are two nearby airports: Chambéry Savoie Airport (CMF), and Geneva International Airport (GVA) in neighbouring Switzerland.

Both airports are about 40 kilometres from Annecy, and there are numerous train and bus options from either.

Catching a FlixBus is one of the most hassle-free and affordable ways to travel from Geneva or Chambéry.

There are also regularly departing trains and buses from Lyon, west of Annecy, which take between two and three hours. Flixbus also has an app which is super easy to use!

EINDHOVEN NETHERLANDS - People travel on Flixbus coach in Eindhoven. Flixbus is a major European bus company serving 1000 destinations in 20 countries.

What to expect in Annecy

Since Annecy is such a beloved tourist destination, most people you come in contact with will be able to communicate with you in English.

Since Francophones are notoriously proud of their language, you might like to learn some greetings in French, if you don’t yet know any. As a visitor, a simple bonjour and merci will show respect to the locals.

France makes it easy for travellers by using the euro. Debit and credit cards are accepted everywhere too, and there are plenty of ATMs in town.

Tipping your taxi driver or bartender isn’t expected, and service charges are added to final bills at restaurants, so you don’t need to leave a tip unless you’ve received exemplary service.

How to get around Annecy

The centre of Annecy is small enough that you can easily get around on foot. Walking around the old town is the ideal way to soak up as much of the charming atmosphere as possible.

If you wish to travel a little further, there are a ton of bike shops in town offering hourly and daily rentals. The Voie Verte is a luscious green cycling path you can follow during your bike ride to visit surrounding lakeside villages.

While the village doesn’t rely too much on public transportation, there are shuttle buses available to get you to the mountains and back.

If you’re staying outside of the old city, renting a car will give you the freedom to explore anywhere and everywhere you’d like.

The best time to visit Annecy

Annecy is absolutely gorgeous no matter the season. That said, the large lake makes it an ideal spot for summer vacationers. June and August are two of the busiest months to visit Annecy, and not just because they’re during summer.

The annual Annecy International Animated Film Festival takes place in June, while the Annecy Lake Festival is on in August. The latter is known for its hour-long fireworks display that draws over 200,000 spectators, so you might like to visit while this festival is on to make your trip extra memorable.

During autumn and spring, Annecy remains lively and vibrant, only with cooler temperatures. In winter, you’ll be able to look out at the snow-topped mountains of the Alps, and take some day trips out for skiing and snowboarding.

Things to do in Annecy

No matter the season, there’s always plenty of things to do in Annecy . Here’s a rundown of some of the top attractions to see during your Annecy sightseeing adventures, as well as some of the most enjoyable activities to take part in.

Visit Annecy Castle

Easily one of the most iconic places to visit in Annecy is Annecy Castle. Château d’Annecy, as it’s known in French, is a restored castle turned museum.

Permanent collections showcase Alps-related artwork, medieval sculptures and regional furnishings.

While the Queen’s Tower dates back to the 12th century, there were several additions to the historic monument up until the 16th century.

Once home to the Counts of Geneva, the castle was abandoned during the 17th century and not restored until 1947. The walls of the castle are 4 metres thick and 38 metres tall, allowing it to also serve as a barracks.

Walk across Lover’s Bridge

The Pont des Amours is a wonderful spot to visit with your special someone. While you won’t find any locks on the bridge like the Parisian Pont des Arts, an old legend states that those who kiss in the middle of the bridge will stay together forever.

The short and scenic footbridge crosses the Thiou River north of the Jardin l’Europe. While the original wooden bridge was built in 1845, the current iron bridge has stood since 1907.

Regardless of your relationship status or who you’re travelling with, you should definitely pay the bridge a visit to admire the view and snap some stunning photos.

Try out a new water sport

The most notable landmark in the region is Lake Annecy (or Lac d’Annecy in French). As the third largest lake in France, there are a ton of activities to try out.

As you would expect, summer is the best time for water sports. Sailing, water skiing, wakeboarding, snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding only scratch the surface of the amount of memorable outdoor activities available.

For scuba diving beginners, there are numerous instructors offering introductions and refresher courses throughout the summer. If you’re an experienced diver, you can explore the 1971 La France shipwreck off the shore of Annecy-le-Vieux.

Rent a pedal boat known as a pedalo and explore the lake at your own pace. Pedalos come in two or four seats with deckchairs, so you can pedal out and relax on the water for a while. For something speedier, motorboats for up to six people can be borrowed without a license.

Head to the beach

I’ll bet you weren’t expecting a beach in the French Alps, but Plage des Marquisats will leave you pleasantly surprised! The lakeside Marquisats Beach is the place to be during summer in Annecy.

The sand and grass areas by Annecy Lake are free to access, and the shallow, crystal-clear waters are perfect for cooling down on a hot and sunny day.

Plage des Marquisats is just one of 11 beautiful beaches around Lake Annecy, all of which are supervised with lifeguards throughout July and August. If it happens to be overcrowded while you’re there, try Plage de Menthon-Saint-Bernard or Plage de Talloires, both of which are on the east side of the lake.

Wander the old town

One of the main areas of Annecy, and not to mention the most charming, is Vieille Ville (aka the old town). It’s a joy to take your time and stroll aimlessly through the narrow streets.

You’ll uncover some of the most gorgeous views along the way, particularly once you reach Perrière Bridge. Sip a café au lait at any of the whimsical cafes alongside the Thiou River and soak up the beauty and charm.

Every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, you can peruse the Old Town Market free of charge. While Tuesdays are reserved for local produce, Fridays and Sundays have many more stalls offering a wider variety of goods. Pop by Rue Sainte-Claire on any of these days between seven in the morning and one in the afternoon.

You might also like to stop by Palais de I’lle, a triangular-shaped palace that sits on a tiny island in the middle of the river. Since the 12th century, the building has historically been used as a jail, a care home for the elderly, an administrative centre and a private residence.

Saved from demolishment, the palace became a museum in 1952. It currently showcases temporary art shows and permanent exhibitions detailing the history of the area.

What to eat in Annecy

Similar to the rest of France, cheese is everywhere in Annecy. Some of the famous cheeses in the Haute-Savoie area include abondance, reblochon, beaufort and chevrotin.

If you’re interested in trying some, visit the renowned Pierre Gay cheese shop (aka “fromagerie”) on Rue Carnot or Crèmerie du Lac on Rue du Lac. For some classic fondue, you can’t go past Le Freti or L’Alpin , both on Rue Sainte-Claire.

When dining out, you’ll have a number of great local dishes to try as well. Here are some of our recommendations for what to look for on the menu:

Tartiflette: Originating from Savoy in the Alps, this baked dish is made with potatoes, reblochon cheese, onions and cream. While warming and comforting on its own, bacon is often added too.

French Tartiflette Recipe Bacon, Potato and Reblochon Cheese Gratin

Soupe aux cailloux: Based on a French folk tale, stone soup is prepared using a large round stone to blend the ingredients together. Green cabbage, potatoes, leek, carrots and turnips are the most commonly used vegetables, with added bacon or chicken.

Brioche de Saint-Genix: This local take on brioche includes red pralines and a little extra sweetness. Pick one of up from a local boulangerie (bakery) or enjoy at a cafe with your afternoon tea or coffee.

Gâteau de Savoie: Another favourite dessert from the region, this simple cake made from flour, corn, sugar and eggs is served with apple jam.

Mussels: For a break away from the cheese, order some all-you-can-eat mussels from Captain Pub on Rue du Pont Morens or Brasserie de l’Abbaye on Rue du Paquier.

Annecy paysages

35 works of art, 15 expos and events over 3 months

Annecy paysages , an extraordinarily ambitious and alluring project created by Bonlieu National Theater and led by artistic director Salvador Garcia, provides visitors and locals alike the chance to embark on an artistic journey through Annecy. For the 2022 edition, from July 2 through September 25 , enjoy viewing thirty-five works of art throughout the city, including sixteen never-before-seen pieces, all adding another dimension to public spaces and offering the chance to view the natural surroundings and iconic historic sites around Lake Annecy from a unique perspective.

Created on location specifically for Annecy paysages , each work comes from an open dialog between the artistic director, the artists who draw their inspiration from the city and landscapes, and the chosen spot for each masterpiece.

Whether massive or more understated, some pieces take over the public space while others weave their way more subtly into the landscape. Among the many works on display, a handful remain permanent pieces, forever integrated into the cityscape, while others from past editions reappear specifically for the occasion.

On this unconventionally original tour , explore downtown Annecy along with other neighborhoods like Novel-Les Teppes, Saint-Jean in Seynod, and Les Clarines in Annecy-le-Vieux.

This project results from the coordinated teamwork between the cultural programs in Annecy. The positive impact has a real unifying effect on the community.

Don’t miss these works of art

We selected a handful of new creations to provide you with a preview of the wonderfully imaginative Annecy paysage s works to marvel at as you wander through the city streets…

Let’s start with the Albigny promenade and its legendary sycamore trees. From their branches, artist Jean-Denant hung several metal mirror-like plaques. In the middle of each plaque, he cut out the shapes of the surrounding buildings to create a unique conversation between nature and architecture.

As we move on to François de Menthon Square, across the street from the main entrance to Centre Courier Mall and known for its stone-grey disposition, stare in awe at the giant manta ray. The hanging sculpture, made with an intricate latticework of bamboo by Atelier Déambulons , “Tranquillité” will glide peacefully and provide shade with its fully-deployed wing-like fins.

In Evêché Square, wander around the botanical garden created by Collective R , “Natures en nuances” (Nuance in nature). This project, made in collaboration with the City of Annecy’s landscaping and biodiversity department, will change over time as the plants bloom, offering a color shading and palette similar to a flower painting.

In the center of Jardins de l’Europe Park, a new work by Bob Verschueren has just been added to those made for past editions. “Comme un nuage” (Like a cloud), a gigantic tree with strange leaves that form a cloud of wires and wood branches, will stand tall among its natural cousins.

And finally, as usual, one of Bonlieu’s walls will receive a makeover. This year, in collaboration with the gallery Art by Friends, street artist Felipe Pantone will express his talent.

New for 2022: Annecy paysages goes virtual

An innovation in 2022, virtual works of art will become a part of Annecy paysages as it continues to push the limits of artistic expression and explore new horizons . Annecy is well-known as a hub for digital excellence, and the amazing work results from a collaboration between 18 students at the Ecole by CCI-Les Goeblins Annecy and the startup Async. The four original creations imagined by the students in Annecy will be visible using augmented reality through the Annecy paysages application .

“ Le Cœur d’Annecy ” (Annecy’s beating heart), located at the St-Jean Well, offers you the chance to see what the city would be like if it was a giant living organism with the canals as its veins and arteries.

In Charles Bosson Park, you can chase down the long sunken boat, Le France, through “ Une plongée au cœur de l’histoire ” (Diving deep into history), which uncovers long-lost mysteries and ghosts from the depths of the lake.

Along the Côte St-Maurice hillside, “ Poésie Urbaine ” (Urban poetry) tells the story of how the lake was formed by angels’ tears as they cried when forced to leave Earth. What would have happened if they had never stopped shedding their tears?

And finally, “ Souche de vie ” (Strain of life) in the center of Evêché Square, embark on a unique encounter with the soul of a tree by learning the story of its fallen branches and leaves that find, over the course of the fantasy, all of their former magnificence.

Through these virtual works, Annecy paysage s offers a nod to the area’s many gifted people and launches the next phase in developing projects that bring digital experts together with talented artists. This should foster a new era of creative, technically demanding art, another way to open the realm of possibility and push beyond the limits of our collective imagination .

Download the Annecy paysages application

This incredibly useful tool will play tour guide as you wind your way through town along the many paths Annecy paysages has in store you. The same-named application offers different ways to approach the many works of art. You can start a walk based on your location, or look for specific works and spots, or choose a preset itinerary based on an area that particularly interests you, like the old part of the city or along the shores of the lake.

The app, available for free on Google Play or the App Store, also allows you to use augmented reality to take full advantage of each work.

Zooming in on blasts from the past

Certain works of art from past editions will make an appearance to the delight of returning visitors.

For example, the giant lotus flower created by popular Korean artist Choi Jeong Hwa opens and closes its petals as it breaths in and out and will take center stage on the esplanade in front of City Hall.

The lighting effects created by Sophie Laly , which illuminate when night falls, reveal a mysterious house on Île des Cygnes / Swan Island; another artistic encounter that everyone continues to enjoy.

The giant “ Bal-ysage ” swings, created by Les Nouveaux Voisins and architects Nicolas Grun and Pierre Laurent and located in Martyrs Square behind Bonlieu, make fun and games the center of everyone’s attention and will bask, once again, in their much deserved success.

The constantly evolving “ Kokedamas ” miracle garden with its tiny, hanging, self-sufficient ecosystems in the courtyard in front of the Palais de l’Île entrance, straight out of the vivid imagination of Judith Dumez and Elisha Joho Monnerat , provides a refreshingly poetic yet explosive gust of creativity.

La Grande Traversée ("The Great Traverse"): a gravity-defying acrobatic event

You may have heard of Nathan Paulin, the twenty-first century’s version of a tightrope walker , since he recently set the world highline record at Mt. St-Michel, walking across a 2200m long slackline strung 100m above the ground. Originally from Le Reposoir in the Aravis Mountains, he first started slacklining in Jardins de l’Europe Park, and will be present for the fantastic evening event and great traverse on a highline between the Imperial Palace Hotel and the Pâquier.

Schedule for the evening’s festivities, on Tuesday July 19 :

  • 19:00 (7:00pm): picnic and music on the Pâquier
  • 20:30 (8:30pm): Great Traverse, which should last 45 to 55 minutes
  • 21:00 (9:30pm): “Birds on a Wire” concert – Rosemary Standley and Dom La Nena
  • 21:00-23:00 (9:00pm-11:00pm): between Jardins de l’Europe Park and Vassé Canal, acrobatic dancing on a crane and in trees, highlining and slacklining, musicians hanging in mid-air, movement art, levitations, and other surprises.

Fill up on expos and events

Annecy paysages offers the chance to take full advantage of the feature events and exceptional expos day-in and day-out for three months.

Among the highlights:

  • from July 4 through July 30, enjoy “Les Estivales” (Summer Fun) experience, a variety of performances, encounters, concerts, and screenings organized by Théâtre de l’Échange in partnership with Images Passages .
  • With Turbines Sciences , sound takes center stage on the connected walk “Hors les murmures” (If the Streets Could Talk). Take the opportunity to listen to the noises of the city as you are fully immersed in sound-filled experience like never before (Wednesdays – July 13 and August 17). Another option, “Le Thiou, un voyage sonore au fil du temps” (The Thiou River, a Journey Through Sound Across Time), runs every Thursday from July 21 through the end of August.
  • The Polyèdre in Seynod will take you on a “Voyage Galatique” (Galactic Voyage) through a sculptural mapping show by Claude Forot and his students around a sculpture made up of 7 cubes on which photos are projected onto each side.
  • From July 1 to 31, expos and discussions are organized at the Art By Friends gallery , including atypical artistic and culinary encounters organized by “Petits Fours Galerie”.
  • The Abbaye presents, in collaboration with the Claudine and Jean-Marc Salomon Foundation for Contemporary Art , a monograph expo by Giuseppe Penone through August 28, to learn about the work of this Arte Povera master.
  • With La Fabric , the Salomon Foundation will also showcase the work of Elodie Lesourd, who uses music as a way to explore how to capture something so temporary and fleeting. Enjoy the expo through September 17.

Great ideas: consider riding a bike around Annecy paysages

The best ways to truly enjoy the artistic journey Annecy paysages offers is either on foot or on a bike. In addition, the event’s DNA serves to showcase and preserve the area’s beautiful environment and landscapes .

Think about renting a bike or taking advantage of the bicycle services Vélonecy has to offer.

Castles and canals: Things to do in Annecy, France

Posted on Last updated: March 31, 2020

The best things do in Annecy, France

Less than a year after deciding Strasbourg was my new favourite French spot, I’ve already lost my heart to Annecy. It must be something about the canals as both places are set around a network of waterways. But as well as a perfectly preserved old town with gorgeous historic buildings and cafés, Annecy also throws in a turquoise lake and stunning mountain scenery.

It’s not somewhere with a lot of famous sights, but rather somewhere perfect for a bit of aimless wandering, eating and drinking. The town’s compact size means you can easily spend a few hours exploring and then relax for the afternoon on the lakeside beach or in one of the waterside restaurants. So here are some of my favourite things to do in Annecy.

The best things to do in Annecy

Boats on Lake Annecy, France

Boats lined up on the lake shore at dusk

Meander around Annecy’s canals

Annecy’s old town – the Vieille Ville – has more waterways than roads, surrounded by pretty, pastel-coloured buildings. The water comes from the River Thiou, which at only 3.5km long is one of Europe’s shortest rivers, connecting the River Fier to Lake Annecy. But what it lacks in length it makes up for in scenic surroundings. The river splits and rejoins around the old town, creating islands linked by arched bridges, draped in flowers during spring and summer.

A network of narrow streets and passages take you past turreted castles, quirky shops and a seemingly endless number of gelateria where you can get your ice cream fix. There are also plenty of cafés and restaurants, most of which have tables lined up along the riverbank to soak up the sunshine. It’s somewhere to go wandering, get lost and see what you discover.

Pathways along the water’s edge in the old town

Climb up to the castle

Built on a hilltop, the Château d’Annecy towers over the town, so you’ll burn off that gelato on the climb up to the top. The castle was built as a residence for the Counts of Geneva and the Dukes of Genevois-Nemours from the 13th to 16th centuries, but it was later damaged by fire and abandoned in the 17th century. Later it was turned into a barracks before being bought by the town after the Second World War and restored back to its former glory.

Now it’s used as a museum with a couple of different sections – one with local furniture, sculptures and art, and the other with exhibits about the people and wildlife living around the lake (entry €5.50 for adults, €3 for under 25s and free for under 12s). Don’t miss the castle’s terrace for a fantastic panoramic view down into the old town and across the lake.

Set sail on Lake Annecy

France’s third largest lake, Lake Annecy is known as the blue lake, and you can definitely see why when the sun hits its clear water. It’s Europe’s cleanest lake (though I probably wouldn’t advise drinking it) with the water coming from snow melting in the Alps. There are walking and cycling paths along the edge of the lake, as well as sandy beaches in the summer.

One of the best ways to see the lake is to get out on the water. Between February and December, a one-hour boat trip takes you on a circuit around the lake, past pretty lakeside villages and an island castle, backed with snowy mountain peaks (€14.20 for adults and €9.60 for children aged 5–12). From spring to autumn there are also longer two-hour cruises and a shuttle between the lakeside villages, as well as lunch and dinner cruises onboard the MS Libellule.

Fill up at the market

There’s something special about French markets, with their huge piles of colourful vegetables and pungent smelling cheeses. And Annecy’s market has one of the best locations, stretching along the bridges and narrow streets of the old town. Markets are held on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 7am–1pm, selling fresh local produce from fish to flowers.

You can check out the local specialities, and if you want to buy the stallholders will often let you have a taste first. Well worth trying are the tasty salami-style sausages which are made with flavours like mushroom, goats’ cheese and hazelnut. And the creamy reblochon cheese, which is used in mountain dishes like tartiflette . If you’re in town on the last Saturday of the month, there’s also a big arts, crafts and flea market which runs from around 8am–5pm.

Get sent to prison

Right at the heart of Annecy’s old city is the Palais de l’Île – the town’s most famous and photographed building. It was built back in the 12th century on a triangular island that lies between two forks of the river. It looks like a miniature fairytale castle but it has actually been used as a mint, a courthouse and a prison over the years.

Today the Palais is home to a small museum with exhibits about local history and architecture, but it’s best appreciated from the outside. Take a walk through the old town at night too when you can see it all lit up. Lights in the canals shine upwards and the turrets at the front of the Palais are lit from inside so the whole place glows in the dark.

Head into the Aravis mountains

There are enough things to do in Annecy to keep you busy for a weekend. But if you’ve got more time then the town is surrounded by some spectacular mountain scenery that’s easy to access. The Aravis mountain range is around 40 minutes’ drive away and is home to four ski resorts – La Clusaz, Le Grand Bornand, Manigod and Saint Jean de Sixt. Buses connect Annecy with the main ski resorts or you can hire a car for the day and go exploring.

Visit the pretty Savoyard village of La Clusaz or head on up the zig-zagging road to the Col des Aravis mountain pass for stunning views across to Mont Blanc. In winter you can go snowshoeing or take a husky ride, or in summer it’s popular with cyclists, but you need to be fit – the pass has route of the Tour de France several times. There are also a couple of restaurants serving mountain specialities and a tiny chapel dedicated to St Anne, protector of travellers.

One Day in Annecy – The Ultimate Classic Itinerary

By now, you must have heard about Annecy – a city in the haute-savoie department that looks like a dream getaway.

Annecy has become one of the top spots to visit in France, where people usually opt for a 1-day trip to Annecy, especially for family travel, as there are so many places to see and activities to do.

Annecy is a small city and very walkable as most places of interest are in the city center.

In this Annecy Itinerary, I will show you how to spend one day in Annecy at your own pace with a self-guided walking tour and travel tips when visiting Annecy.

Some of the links on this site are affiliate links and I may earn a little something if you decide to click on them at no additional cost to you. Thanks!

One Day in Annecy: Self-Guided Walking Tour Itinerary

Pont des Amours

Annecy - Pont Des Amours

Start your day trip from Gare D’annecy (Annecy Train Station) to Pont Des Amours (Lovers Bridge) for a scenic Alpine view, where the lake of Annecy and the inland Canal du Vasse are interconnected.

There is a famous legend about the bridge – couples who kiss on the deck will likely be united for life – which explains why the bridge is popular among couples. Try to arrive at the bridge before noon to avoid the crowd, especially on a nice summer day.

And take that infamous photo with the signage of Pont Des Amours over the beautiful lake for memory keeping.

Jardin de L’Europe & Lac D’Annecy

1 Day in Annecy

From the bridge, continue the promenade along Lake Annecy. It has been nominated to be the third largest lake in France.

The pristine lake is a great place to visit, especially during the summer, as there are many things to do around the lake.

For instance, you can walk along or rent a bike or segway around Lake Annecy.

Other way to enjoy the lake is to get out on the water. Compagnie des Bateaux du Lac d’Annecy provides 1-hour cruise tours which point out several beautiful towns surrounding the lake with breathtaking views of the mountains and castles.

The cruise departs several times a day from the pier of the Old Town and is available throughout the year.

The beaches and the shores of the lake are also perfect for picnicking, swimming, doing water sports, or even renting a pedal boat.

You will find jardin de l’Europe on your right. Stop by for a while for a picnic on the bench or the grass and enjoy the breathtaking views over the turquoise lake and the French Alps.

If you travel by car, head to Rue des Marquisats for more parking space.

Palais de l’ile

1 Day in Annecy, France - Quick Guide Itinerary

The visit to Annecy is not complete without a stop-off at Palais de l’Île, an island situated in the middle of the Canal du Thiou in the old city of Annecy.

Once a medieval castle dating back to the 12th Century, it then served as a prison and a courthouse before being transformed into a museum.

Consider visiting the museum if you are fond of history. The visit should take around 30-45 minutes.

La Vieille Ville

One Day in Annecy

Walking around La Vieille Ville, or the Annecy Old Town, which is just a few steps from the Palais de l’Île, is an absolute delight.

The Old Town of Annecy offers a variety of shops, cafés, restaurants with diverse cuisines, and churches can be found here.

You do not want to miss Rue Sainte-Claire, the main shopping street just a stone’s throw from the Old Town Annecy, where you can find some artisanal ice cream and chocolate shops.

Enjoy the old town at your pace, and stroll along the streets to admire the quaint buildings with charming architecture.

Also, remember to try out their famous fondue and raclette, including the region’s comfort food, tartiflette!

Musée-Château d’Annecy

Annecy Itinerary

Our last destination is the Musée Château D’Annecy. Gear up for a 15-minute walk up to the castle from the Old Town and be ready to indulge yourself with a panoramic view of the town and the Alps.

Dated back to the 12th Century, this lovely castle was built by the counts of Geneva and now serves as a museum. You’ll find inside paintings, artwork and various exhibitions to be noticed!

Where to stay in Annecy?

If you think spending one day in Annecy is not enough and want to stay there for the night, check out these listings!

Budget: If you are looking for a homely and strategic place to crash in, then Hôtel des Alpes & Atipik Hôtel Alexandra best suit your needs. Both of the hotels provide spotless private en-suite rooms within walkable distance of all the places of attractions.

Mid-range – Le Boutik Hotel and Hôtel du Palais de l’Isle provide affordable stays in uniquely decorated bedrooms. What’s more the locations for both of them are terrific and with views of the lake and the canal, the castle or town.

Luxury – I recommend staying at Le Splendid Hotel Lac D’Annecy – Handwritten Collection if you want a lovely stay in Annecy. If you want to stay somewhere luxe on the edge of Lake of Annecy, staying at Impérial Palace would be a smart idea.

1) Why visit Annecy?

Known as ‘Venice of the Alps’, Annecy is located in southeastern France and is the largest city in the haute-savoie.

This lake town received a total of 2.7 million visitors in 2019 (pre-covid). Annecy is glorious for its winding canals, picturesque Lake Annecy, and steeped culture and history.

2) Where is Annecy and how to get there?

Annecy is neighbored by other big cities such as Lyon and Geneva. Annecy is easily reachable by train and bus, depending on your location.

You should pick some of the earliest trains/ buses to Annecy to optimize your time to explore the city. The fares are estimated for an outbound journey from the selected departure city and may vary depending on the seasons.

Annecy from Lyon

By Bus

Travel to Annecy cheaply from Lyon Central Bus Station to Annecy Central Bus Station by opting for the Flixbus (click to purchase the tickets online). The journey generally takes around 2 hours and the bus ticket costs around €27.

The trains depart from Lyon Perrache and are operated by France’s Rail Company, SNCF. The journey will take approximately 2 hours to arrive at Annecy and the train ticket fare ranges between €55 – €65. If you are on a tight budget, survey the chosen date and time to purchase the train tickets online in advance.

Annecy from Geneva

Annecy is located in the south of Geneva and is only 42 km apart, so traveling to Annecy from Geneva is nearly effortless. From Geneva Central Bus Station, take the Flixbus to Annecy for only €8. You will arrive at the destination within the next 55 minutes. This option is more popular as the fare is low-priced than the latter.

You can travel to Annecy from Geneva Airport. However, it is not recommendable for a day trip as the earliest bus is at 1:35 pm. If you have a day to spare, opt to stay the night at Annecy and take the bus early in the morning for your flight the next day. The bus fare ranges from €15 to €20.

Annecy, the best-known of the four lakes

arte summer tour annecy

Lake Annecy is one of the purest in Europe. From its shores to its turquoise water so prized by Cézanne, as well as the surrounding viewpoints from Tournette, Roc de Chère and Semnoz, mesmerising landscape is there for the taking.

Culture aplenty

Let us take a short walk around the lake, starting at the northern end and in the old town of Annecy with its many canals, which are resplendent all year round. On the left bank, Sevrier, Saint-Jorioz as well as Duingt and its château reach down to the water's edge, while on the right bank, Veyrier and its viewpoint, and Menthon Saint Bernard and its château overlook the lake. Bout du Lac nature reserve and the viewpoint at Roc de Chère can be found at the southern end of the lake. A few kilometres away, the source of Lake Annecy in Faverges rounds off this tour of the lake.

Canals carve their way through Annecy’s old town, giving it the nickname ‘Venice of the Alps’.

Stock up on the outdoors

Bicycles form part of the landscape around Lake Annecy. A walking and cycling path links Annecy to Ugine along the lake’s west bank. To do a full tour of the lake by bicycle, you can continue along the main road that runs along the east bank. The lake's two 18-hole golf clubs, in Talloires and Giez, have beautiful courses next to the lake with stunning views.   To get a bird’s-eye view of the lake, head to col de la Forclaz, one of the most beautiful paragliding spots in France. Beginners can take tandem flights, and there are also learner and advanced courses.    An array of hiking routes also offers breath-taking views over the lake.

Pristine water

The water of Lake Annecy, which can reach 26°C in the summer, is very much enjoyed by bathers. The lake caters for all water sports: sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, diving, etc.   Why not enjoy a cruise around the lake? Or take advantage of the Omnibus shuttle boat service? You will find boat rental facilities in each port.

Cultural outings

Annecy is a must-see tourist destination. Running through the whole town is Thiou canal, the lake's natural outlet, from whose banks and bridges visitors are surrounded by the town's churches and narrow streets.  Annecy's château overlooks the town. This former residence of the Court of Savoie, subsequently used as military barracks, was turned into a regional art and nature museum in 1842.    The library of Menthon Saint Bernard château, on the right bank, holds more than 12,000 volumes that predate the French Revolution, while on the other side of the lake, in Sevrier, the Bell museum (Musée de la Cloche) is dedicated to the well-known local foundry, Fonderie Paccard, the world's leading maker of church bells and chimes. A stone’s thrown from the foundry, Lake Annecy eco-museum presents the history and daily lives of Savoyards in the 19th century.   A designated Ville d'Art et d'Histoire (town of art and history), Annecy is also well-known for its collections of paintings which date back to the 15th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the influence of the romanticism and realism art movements, which so revered mountain scenery, led a great many artists to visit Annecy. Most of the paintings of Lake Annecy were produced by landscape painters, of which the best known is ‘The blue lake’ by Paul Cézanne.

Haute cuisine

Lake Annecy is home to many species of fish, including char and whitefish, which are served in local restaurants. There are several Michelin-starred restaurants in Annecy and around the lake: Le Clos des Sens 3* in Annecy-le-Vieux, L'Esquisse 1*, la Rotonde de Trésoms 1*, Vincent Favre-Félix 1*  in Annecy, Yoann Conte 2* in Veyrier-du-Lac as well as Jean Sulpice 2* and Auberge de Montmin 1* in Talloires.

The most beautiful panoramas

Col de la Forclaz viewpoint, above Talloires and at a height of 1150 m, provides a commanding view of the lake. From here, a path leads to another viewpoint which looks out on to the surrounding summits.

Just after Veyrier du Lac, a path leads to Mont Veyrier, a five-hour walk (round trip).  From the summit, walkers are rewarded with a bird's-eye view over Annecy and its lake, framed by the surrounding summits.

There are also several viewpoints in the Semnoz mountain range.  Crêt de Chatillon, its highest point at 1699 m, offers a panoramic view of the western Alps, including Haut Faucigny, Mont-Blanc, the Vanoise and Ecrins mountain ranges, and the Aiguilles d'Arves.
