Uncapped spinner Todd Murphy has bolted into Australia’s Test squad for the tour of India, as selectors confirmed an 18-player squad for the four-Test Border-Gavaskar series.

He joins Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson as options to partner frontline spinner Nathan Lyon on a tour that is expected to feature low, slow, turning wickets.

Swepson has been retained after struggling on Australia’s tour of Pakistan last year — kept in favour of what would be a shock call up for white-ball specialist Adam Zampa.

Victorian Sheffield Shield captain Peter Handscomb has also joined the touring party alongside Matthew Renshaw, despite retiring hurt after a hit to the hip playing for St Kilda in a grade fixture on Tuesday night.

Murphy had only played one first-class fixture prior to 2022, but has rocketed into contention after strong performances for Victoria, Australia A and the Prime Minister’s XI.

At 22, he is viewed as a potential long-term successor to the ageing Nathan Lyon, who to date has not found a sustainable second spinner to partner him.

Murphy currently has 14 wickets to his name at an average of 17.71 over just three Sheffield Shield matches, and bowled Victoria to a final-day win over New South Wales in the last match before the Big Bash.

“Todd has emerged as a strong spin option, having impressed in domestic cricket and recently with Australia A”, said chief selector George Bailey.

“Selection in this squad also provides another opportunity to spend time alongside Nathan Lyon and assistant coach Daniel Vettori in India which will be invaluable to his development.”

Opener Marcus Harris, released from the Test squad after the recall of Matthew Renshaw for the New Year’s Test, has been omitted, while uncapped WA quick Lance Morris retains his place in the squad.

The tour is shaping as a potential debut opportunity for Morris, with Mitchell Starc confirmed to not be joining the squad until after the first Test in Nagpur with an injured finger.

Allrounder Cameron Green is also racing the clock to be fit with a fractured finger sustained in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa.

As foreshadowed by captain Pat Cummins in Sydney, left arm spinner Ashton Agar has been included despite going wicketless in the final Test against South Africa .

Queensland bowler Michael Neser has also been snubbed in favour of Victorian Scott Boland, while West Australian wicketkeeper Josh Inglis misses out as well.

In the event of injury to wicketkeeper Alex Carey, Peter Handscomb will likely take the gloves.

Australia and India will play four Tests in less than two months in Nagpur, Delhi, Dharamsala and Ahmedabad.

Australia has not won in India since their famous 2004 series victory under Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting.

Rain prevented Australia from winning the T20 series against England and the big-name reinforcements are arriving to make up for that in the ODO series.

Liam Livingstone has steered England towards a three-wicket victory in the second T20I against Australia at Sophia Gardens to level the series. But there was an unexpected shining star with the ball in defeat.

Australia announce Test squad for tour of India, include four spinners

Matthew Renshaw and Peter Handscomb have also earned call-ups with Marcus Harris left out, as Australia tries to win a series in India for the first time since 2004.

IND vs AUS

As expected, Australia is going spin-heavy for its four-Test tour of India in February and March.

Uncapped Todd Murphy was one of four spin bowlers named Wednesday in the Australia squad alongside fellow spinners Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson.

Starc will miss the first test in Nagpur on Feb. 9 with a finger injury and will join the squad later, while allrounder Cameron Green will tour from the outset with his broken finger.

“We have selected a squad that provides the depth and flexibility required to adapt depending on the conditions we may encounter,” chief selector George Bailey said.

Festive offer

“Todd Murphy has progressed quickly having impressed in domestic cricket and recently with Australia A,” Bailey added. “With those performances Todd has emerged as a strong spin option.”

Australia also plays test matches in New Delhi, Dharamsala and Ahmedabad in February and March. A squad for three one-day internationals will be announced at a later date.

Australia could make further changes to the squad between the second test in New Delhi and the the third in Dharamsala, with a lengthy gap between the matches.

Australia squad: Pat Cummins (captain), Ashton Agar, Scott Boland, Alex Carey , Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Peter Handscomb, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Lance Morris, Todd Murphy, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith , Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Swepson, David Warner .

  • September 18 2023 21:52 (IST) IND squad vs Aus Live: It's a wrap! Okay, guys, that is it from the India squad announcement for Australia ODIs. Hope you liked our coverage. Keep enjoying sports action at  NDTV . Goodbye. facebook twitter Copy Link
  • September 18 2023 21:47 (IST) IND squad Live: Why some players have been rested for first two ODIs? "Rohit (Sharma) and Virat (Kohli) have been around forever and obviously Hardik is an important player for us, we want to manage him. Kuldeep is in great form. It also gives us a chance to look at some of the other guys. That's the thing. Luckily, we got a fair amount of cricket in the Asia Cup. If not we might have looked at it some other way. At some stage or the other, more than physical, guys sometimes need a mental break which is not such a bad thing, leading up the tournament (Cricket World Cup). But comes the third game, everyone will be available to play. We will play our World Cup squad. It does give us a chance to play some other guys who have been sitting outside and it has been a strong squad," said Ajit Agarkar. facebook twitter Copy Link
  • September 18 2023 21:38 (IST) IND squad vs Aus Live: Shreyas Iyer's fitness update - "He has not picked up a stress fracture, otherwise he would not have been in the squad. In the finals day, he got through his program fine, whether it is batting or fielding. At the moment, he is fit and that is why we have picked him. And we are hopeful that he gets through all these three games. He has worked incredibly hard over the last many months to be at this stage to be fit and fortunately for him it was not a massive injury (the niggle) that he picked up. At the moment he is fine," said Rohit Sharma on Shreyas Iyer. facebook twitter Copy Link
  • September 18 2023 21:28 (IST) IND squad vs Aus Live: Will Ashwin replace Axar in WC squad? When asked if Ravichandran Ashwin will be replacing Axar Patel if the latter is not fit for World Cup, Ajit Agarkar said: "There are couple of guys anyway, both him (Ashwin) and Washington (Sundar). What we know with Axar's (Patel) injury that he should be okay. All will make it once we know that. But at least it leaves us with options. If these guys get a couple of games now, (it) gives the team management a few options if they need to go that way. If the need arises, we will probably have a look at it at that stage. But I don't think there is the need to speculate right now or make any decisions right now because we are hoping that Axar is fit." facebook twitter Copy Link
  • September 18 2023 21:19 (IST) IND squad vs Aus Live: Will there be any changes in World Cup squad too? "Few of the guys have obviously been given a breather for the first couple of games. Axar has picked an injury unfortunately and we are hopeful that he will be fit. That's why the two (spinners have been added). Washington Sundar was already part of the squad for finals and Ashwin brings experience. So it just gives us options just in case, there is a need at some stage to look at a couple of guys. Basically those are the two guys that we need to look at if the need arises at some stage. But apart from that I think it's pretty straightforward," said Agarkar. facebook twitter Copy Link
  • September 18 2023 21:11 (IST) IND squad vs Aus Live: Axar's fitness to be assessed! "Axar Patel obviously will be assessed if he is fit or not. We are hoping he is fit for the third ODI. And we have kept both Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar as part of the squad for the third one. So, it is a 17-member squad for the third one," said BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar. facebook twitter Copy Link
  • September 18 2023 20:55 (IST) IND squad vs Aus Live: No Rohit, Kohli, Hardik in first two ODIs! Star players like Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli have been rested for the first two ODIs against Australia. In the absence of Hardik, Ravindra Jadeja will be the vice-captain of the side. Rohit and Hardik will return to their respective roles in the third match. facebook twitter Copy Link

Australia Test squad winners and losers: 22yo bolter emerges but spin duo, luckless quick snubbed

Australia has confirmed its Test squad for its upcoming tour of India.

Considering 18 players were named ahead of the four Tests, there were ample winners. But an array of stars can consider themselves unlucky after missing out on selection.

Foxsports.com.au analyses the big winners and losers after the Aussie Test squad for the February-March tour was revealed.

Watch BBL12. Every game live and ad-break free during play on Kayo. New to Kayo? Start your free trial now >

Todd Murphy

The big winner — and the big bolter. Well a bolter in the sense he’s only been on the domestic scene for a few years, yet many experts believed he loomed as a strong chance to earn a spot in the squad.

Murphy, 22, is one of four spinners that have been included in the squad, giving Australia ample selection flexibility for the matches on dry wickets that traditionally favour the slow bowlers.

The right-arm off-spinner only has seven first-class games to his name. But he’s impressed at domestic level over the past three summers and emerged as a genuine Test contender over recent months.

Murphy took 3-27 for the PM’s XI against the West Indies before claiming seven wickets in a Sheffield Shield clash against New South Wales. Four of those seven scalps came in the Blues’ second innings as an economical Murphy bowled Victoria to victory.

The fact he’s taken one wicket in all four BBL games he’s played for the Sydney Sixers this summer — all while conceding an average of just six runs per over — has only enhanced his cause.

Todd Murphy playing for the Prime Minister’s XI. Picture: Matt King

News Corp reported on Tuesday night Murphy was now viewed by Australian selectors as the second-best spinner in Australia. But unleashing him for the first time against India’s batters in Indian conditions would be an almighty risk — hence former Aussie paceman Michael Kasprowicz’s warning to selectors about handing Murphy a debut next month.

But at least for Murphys sake, he’s clearly on the cusp of the big time.

“Todd Murphy has progressed quickly having impressed in domestic cricket and recently with Australia A,” chair of selectors George Bailey said. “With those performances Todd has emerged as a strong spin option.

“Selection in this squad also provides another opportunity to spend time alongside Nathan Lyon and assistant coach Daniel Vettori in India which will be invaluable to his development.”

Mitchell Swepson

The Queenslander surely would’ve felt some relief after being told he had a spot on the India-bound plane considering many thought he might’ve slipped out of favour among selectors.

After years of being on the fringes behind Nathan Lyon, Swepson was given a crack at Test level last year, playing two matches in Pakistan then two in Sri Lanka for a total of 10 wickets at 45.8.

But he’s struggled this Australian summer, claiming 12 wickets at 39.7 from five Shield games and four wickets at 51.3 from four Marsh Cup matches. He’s also barely fired a shot for the Heat in the BBL, taking just one wicket from eight games while conceding 9.1 runs per over.

But Swepson’s placed in the squad for the India series suggests selectors still believe that not only is he the best long-form leg-spinner in the country, he can also have an impact at international level.

Lance Morris

Not a shock winner by any stretch, but Morris’ selection would fill him with ample confidence.

The WA fast bowler has been part of the Australian set-up all summer, but primarily been seen externally as an option to replace one of the first-choice quicks should one of them be injured. And that almost came to fruition last week, with Morris mightily close to earning a debut for the third Test against South Africa at the SCG, only for selectors to choose two spinners and a specialist batter at No. 6.

But Morris is India-bound — and it’s an outright Test selection, rather than being an injury fill-in.

‘The Wild Thing’ has been the best bowler of the Sheffield Shield to date this summer, claiming 27 wickets at 18.4. The most impressive aspect about his performances has been his consistency, taking at least three wickets in six of his nine innings and at least one scalp in all nine innings.

Indian wickets tend not to carry the same juice for pace bowlers compared to Australian and England pitches. But Morris’ greatest asset at the moment is his sheer pace — and his ability to hit the 150km/hr mark could cause a few headaches for the Indian top order should he given an opportunity next month.

Peter Handscomb and Matt Renshaw

When Renshaw was re-called to the Aussie team and Handscomb to the extended squad as concussion sub for the third Test against the Proteas last week, it was a sign both players were in the frame for the India-bound squad.

Both players were regular members of the Australian Test team in 2016 and 2017, with the duo scoring hundreds against Pakistan to announce themselves on the international stage. Patchy form for both Handscomb and Renshaw followed, leading to their axings from the team.

But the pair have been among the most impressive in the Sheffield Shield so far this summer. Handscomb is the clear leading run-scorer, amassing 571 runs — including an unbeaten 281 against Western Australia in mid-October — at 81.57. The only other batter to register a Shield double ton so far this season has been Renshaw, who’s averaging 51.7 from his five matches.

Not only are Handscomb and Renshaw in form, they’re seen as solid players of spin, which will be crucial for the Aussies on the Indian wickets.

Whether Handscomb or Renshaw of them can immediately force their way into the starting XI following Australia’s impressive performances with the bat against the West Indies and South Africa remains questionable. But if either of them do, they’ll re-enter the Test arena in decent form.

Handscomb, too, will be the back-up wicketkeeper in case anything happens to Alex Carey. Although there is some doubt over his own fitness after he hurt his hip in a seemingly innocuous knock while batting in club cricket on Tuesday night.

“Peter Handscomb deserves his place back in the squad,” Bailey said. “His domestic form has been strong recently and Pete has proven he can perform at Test level.

“His experience against spin on the subcontinent is valuable and he is also an exceptionally good close-to-the-wicket catcher.”

Marcus Harris

From playing in last year’s home Ashes summer and being in the extended squad for all five home Tests this summer, to being left out of the touring party altogether.

Harris has been snubbed.

The left-handed opener travelled around with the Aussies throughout their two recent Test series before being released back to the BBL midway through the SCG Test.

Considering Usman Khawaja’s epic 2022 calendar year — and his brilliant start to 2023 — as well as David Warner’s recent return to form, Harris’ chances of opening the batting for Australia have diminished.

But perhaps Matt Renshaw’s new-found versatility has cost Harris somewhat. Renshaw has opened for Australia in the past, but selectors were prepared to play him at No. 6 for the recent Sydney Test — something they’d be less likely to do with Harris.

And the fact Handscomb can take the gloves for Australia if needed might’ve helped his case in earning selection over Harris.

Harris hit 73 against the West Indies for the PM’s XI in late November, but has barely played since after his stint with the Aussie Test squad. The 30-year-old already has 14 Tests to his name, but hasn’t scored a century and averages just 25.3.

Michael Neser

The Queenslander is proof of just how competitive it is to get a spot in the Aussie test team as a quick at the moment.

Neser couldn’t have been more impressive so far this summer, performing well at every level he’s played in every format. He’s taken 24 wickets at 14.5 in the Sheffield Shield, 11 wickets at 15.1 in the Marsh Cup and 10 wickets — including a hat-trick — at 18.1 in the BBL.

And when he was given a crack at Test level against the West Indies last month, he snared five wickets for the match in Adelaide.

Yet there’s no spot on the plane for the right-armer, with Scott Boland and Lance Morris the fringe fast bowlers picked ahead of him.

Adam Zampa and Matt Kuhnemann

Four spinners were picked to tour India — but not these two.

While Zampa has become Australia’s first-choice spinner in the white-ball formats, momentum around his red-ball potential had been building over recent months after he revealed to Fox Cricket his dream was still to play Test cricket. He was then picked for his first Shield game since 2019, taking three 3-57 against Victoria as he hoped to stake a claim for a Test call-up for the tour of India.

But selectors overlooked the leggie, even though he feels his game has evolved enough in the last few years. Mitch Swepson was the leg-spinner picked ahead of him.

Kuhnemann has been around the Australian set-up in recent times, which led to him playing four ODIs against Sri Lanka in June last year. And his first-class bowling average, economy rate and strike-rate are all better than Ashton Agar’s.

Yet Agar, who played against the Proteas at the SCG last week, got the nod ahead of the Queenslander.

Cameron Bancroft

The WA opener missed out on selection, despite continuing to push his case across all three formats this summer.

Bancroft has conjured 483 runs, including a competition-high three centuries, in the Sheffield Shield, as well as averaged 51.7 in the Marsh Cup and 62.0 in the Big Bash.

He was given a decent run in the Test side as an opener during 2017 and 2018 before the ball tampering saga before earning a re-call for two tests in the 2019 Ashes, which yielded four scores of 16 or less.

But Bancroft is building momentum this summer. Don’t be surprised to see him in the mix come the Ashes later this year.

Glenn Maxwell and Mitch Marsh

It’s almost as simple as saying if both all-rounders were fit and healthy now, they’d be on a plane to India in a couple of weeks.

Instead they’ll be watching from afar.

Maxwell revealed on Fox Cricket on Tuesday night he’d been targeting the tour of India — where he scored his maiden Test century in 2017 — as his best opportunity to return to Australia’s red-ball line-up. Instead, he still has no firm return date from the horror broken leg injury he suffered in November last year.

Marsh, who’s played 32 Tests, remains sidelined after undergoing surgery late last year on a long-standing ankle injury.

Sharing his thoughts on Star Sports , the official broadcaster of Asia Cup said: “There are different venues and traveling in India… it takes a day (between every match). You need to preserve energy before the World Cup. I don't know why they are playing three ODIs. It is probably done a long time ago, but it was a bit unnecessary. You don't want to be tired before a mega-tournament where you are favourites at home. If you want some more players in the squad, you can play those in the three ODIs against Australia.”

Athletics, Diamond League: Neeraj Chopra finishes second despite competing with a fractured hand

Despite dominating the visitors on the field during the 1947-’48 series, the Australian captain had deep respect for Indian cricketers.

What Don Bradman thought of the first Indian team that toured Australia

Just two months after India attained independence, its cricket team travelled to Australia to play one of the greatest Test sides ever. This was to be Don Bradman’s last series at home and the only opportunity for India to face him.

Bradman was 39 by then and beset with a series of health problems, but when he was asked to lead the Australian side, he said yes. “Believing that the season against India in 1947-8 would be less exacting and that now I was better able to stand up to it, I again felt it my duty to play this one season, especially as it was to be the first tour of Australia by an Indian team,” Bradman wrote in his 1950 autobiography Farewell to Cricket . “At that time I was still very dubious about attempting a final tour of England.”

For the tourists, the challenge was onerous. India had played Tests since its first match at Lord’s in June 1932 but not won a single one. Besides, their star players including Vijay Merchant had pulled out at the start of the tour because of injuries.

Bradman was disappointed. He seemed to have a great deal of respect for Merchant, who was originally named captain for the tour. “Vijay Merchant had earned a place amongst the leading batsmen of the day with others not so far behind,” he wrote. “...There were other withdrawals too, of prominent players which must have affected the overall strength of the team. But it was the loss of Merchant that I think was mainly responsible for India’s relatively poor performances in the Test matches.”

While injuries deprived India of Merchant and Rusi Modi, the Partition took away some of its other quality players. The bowling great Fazal Mahmood was among the early ones to go over to the newly-formed nation of Pakistan. Others who joined later included a few from that touring Indian team, such as Amir Elahi and Gul Mohammed, both of whom would end playing for Pakistan. Wicketkeeper Jamshed ‘Jenni’ Irani, who played for Sindh, would live out his life in Karachi.

“By sterling performances in their own country against visiting teams, the Indian cricketers obviously possessed considerable skill,” Bradman said. “In tours of England they had shown likewise, but the variable weather and the lack of sunshine probably caused them to be unreliable.”

Pitch imperfect

Hoping for a competitive series, the Australian cricket authorities felt it would be more advantageous for India if the wickets remained covered. But India wanted to follow Melbourne Cricket Club’s practice of uncovered wickets. “I thought India was making a grave mistake,” Bradman wrote. “We do not see many wet wickets in this country, but we see more than the Indians do in theirs.”

A covered wicket or pitch is one that has been protected against the elements, like the sun and the rain, to make the ball’s behaviour on it more predictable. In contrast, an uncovered pitch can be wetter, drier or more uneven, giving bowlers an upper hand.

Bradman tried to persuade substitute Indian captain Lala Amarnath to agree to covered wickets, but to no avail. “Knowing the merits of the players who would be at our disposal, I felt that on wet wickets India would be overwhelmed,” he wrote. Amarnath probably saw the wisdom of Bradman’s suggestion, but was willing to “trust the favouritism of the weather gods”.

In the end, India lost the five-match series 4-0. One of the Tests was a draw, on account of rain.

Bradman felt the Indians were hurt the most by their obstinacy. The tourists “suffered grievously through being caught on wet wickets,” he wrote. Of course, one reason Bradman wanted more advantageous conditions for India was the host nation’s financial considerations. It was a foregone conclusion that Australia was going to win, but one-sided matches that ended in less than nine sessions would mean there would be no ticket revenues for two days.

Stern punishment

Despite Amarnath’s stubbornness, Bradman seemed to have a degree of affection for him.

“This picturesque player had been a member of the Indian team which toured England in 1936 under the captaincy of Maharaj Kumar of Vizianagram,” Bradman wrote, recalling an incident that overshadowed that series. “The tour was in progress and Amarnath had scored 613 runs (more than anyone else at the time) and taken 32 wickets, when dissension developed among the party and he was sent back to India as a disciplinary measure.”

In a 2007 article for ESPN Cricinfo , Martin Williamson described the whole scandal, laying the blame for Amarnath’s return to India on “the egotistical and untalented captain, the Maharaja of Vizianagaram”, whose appointment was owed to “social manoeuvring and deep pockets”.

Bradman too seemed to find the episode queer. He wrote that Amarnath had been handed “a very stern punishment” although “no convincing explanation was given at that time by the authorities”.

In his dealings with them in 1947, Bradman found both Amarnath and the Indian manager, Peter Gupta, “absolutely charming” in every respect. “They cooperated in all conceivable ways to try and make the games enjoyable, and the most wonderful spirit of camaraderie existed between the Australian and Indian players.” The very thought of such camaraderie between the rival cricketing powers would be inconceivable in the 21st century, at least on the field.

australia india tour squad

“Amarnath was such a splendid ambassador that it makes it all the more difficult to understand his recent suspension by the Indian Board of Control,” Bradman wrote. “Lala, as he was called, certainly believed in speaking his mind at all times and was not averse to expressing his opinion to a controlling authority or an individual, but in Australia he always did it with the utmost courtesy and tact.”

Mankading incident

Although India was wiped out in the series, there were some strong individual performances.

Vinoo Mankad, the future India captain, scored two centuries on the tour and was his team’s second highest wicket-taker. But more than the statistics, what is remembered today is an episode from the second Test in Sydney that cemented his name in cricketing lingo.

“An early sensation came in Australia’s innings when (Bill) Brown was once more run out by Mankad, who, in the act of delivering the ball, held on to it and whipped the bails off with Brown well out of his crease,” Bradman wrote. “This had happened in the Indian match against Queensland, and immediately in some quarters Mankad’s sportsmanship was questioned.”

The word Mankading has become shorthand for anyone running out the non-striking batsman when they are backing up. Bradman, however, saw nothing wrong in the dismissal.

“For the life of me I cannot understand why,” he wrote in response to attacks on Mankad’s sportsmanship. “The laws of cricket make it quite clear that the non-striker must keep within his ground until the ball has been delivered. If not, why is the provision there which enables the bowler to run him out?”

australia india tour squad

He said the non-striker gains an “unfair advantage” by backing up too far. “On numerous occasions he may avoid being run out at the opposite end by gaining this false start,” he explained.

Another Indian player who performed well on the tour was Vijay Hazare: he made 429 runs at an average of 47.66, becoming India’s leading scorer.

“When we foregathered for the First Test match, I had a lengthy argument with one of my compatriots as to the relative merits of Hazare and Amarnath as batsmen,” Bradman wrote. “The skipper had performed brilliantly in one or two State matches, but I had been very impressed by the soundness of Hazare and the correctness of his stroke production.”

Amarnath’s 228 not out against Victoria was “amongst the best [knocks] ever seen at the Melbourne Cricket Ground,” Bradman wrote. But Hazare still overshadowed Amarnath, maybe because, Bradman conjectured, “the responsibility of being captain weighed heavily on Amarnath’s shoulders”.

Bradman personally had a great series, scoring 715 runs, with a top score of 201, at an average of 178.75. On the eve of the fifth and final Test, he called a press conference and read out a statement: “I have today advised my co-selectors that I am available for the Australian tour of England. At the same time I wish to say that the game against India will be my last first-class match in Australia, as I shall retire from cricket at the conclusion of the English tour.”

australia india tour squad

Gracious victor

It was clear that the Indian team that went to Australia was not on the same level as the hosts, but Bradman was gracious as ever in victory. “Had their full strength been available, it might have been a different story,” he said. “If Australia or England should lose four or five of their best players it would seriously prejudice their efficiency. How much more so with India whose resources were much thinner.”

Bradman was hopeful that India would become a better cricketing nation. “Throughout the season I had tried in various ways to assist the Indian players because I felt that it was part of our responsibility to encourage and improve their standard.”

In 1948, when the Australian team was on their way to England for the Ashes, their ship, the RMS Strathaird, called on Bombay. Bradman had fallen ill on the journey from Colombo, so he did not get off the ship and walk around Colaba, like some of his teammates. An Indian delegation led by the president of the Indian cricket board, Anthony de Mello, boarded the steamer instead for a small function and presentation.

Before the team’s arrival in Bombay, the Indian cricket authorities had invited the Australian players to practise at the nets at Brabourne Stadium. The offer was turned down. Bradman never played in India and his fans in the country could not see him even at the nets.

Keeping his word, the greatest batsman of all time retired from first-class cricket after the 1948 Ashes.

Cheatle bolts back into Aussie squad for India tour

Lauren-Cheatle-WBBL2

NSW left-armer returns to the Australia set-up for the first time since 2019 but selectors delay naming new full-time captain to replace Meg Lanning

Best of Lauren Cheatle in WBBL|09

New South Wales quick Lauren Cheatle has earned her first international call up in more than four years as Australia today named a strong squad for their historic multi-format tour of India.

Heather Graham has also earned a recall in the 16-player touring party after missing the series against the West Indies last month, but selectors have held off naming a new full-time captain to replace Meg Lanning.

Alyssa Healy has stood in for Lanning at various times over the past 18 months, but Australia's keeper is no certainty to return from injury in time for the Test match at Mumbai's iconic Wankhede Stadium that will open the multi-format series on December 21.

Australia squad: Darcie Brown, Lauren Cheatle (Test only), Heather Graham, Ashleigh Gardner, Kim Garth, Grace Harris (T20s only), Alyssa Healy, Jess Jonassen, Alana King, Phoebe Litchfield, Tahlia McGrath, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Wareham

The 33-year-old was ruled out of the ongoing Weber WBBL season following the first match of the Sydney Sixers' campaign and needed surgery on her right index finger after an incident involving her two Staffordshire bull terriers.

National Selector Shawn Flegler said they had commenced the process of finding Australia's next full-time skipper, which is expected to be confirmed closer to the tour.

"Alyssa Healy's finger is healing but remains in a splint and our medical team are continuing to monitor her recovery closely.

"We're obviously very hopeful she will be available for the Test, but those decisions are still a while away."

Should Healy not recover in time, Australia could be left with just two primary batters in their top eight in openers Beth Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield, with the rest of the batting positions filled by allrounders, as was the case (bar Healy) for this year's Ashes Test.

Cheatle – currently the equal leading wicket-taker in WBBL|09 with 19 in 10 matches for the Sixers – has overcome a series of shoulder and back injuries, as well as having a melanoma removed from her lower leg , since debuting for her country aged 17 in 2016.

The now 25-year-old left-armer played her last one-day international for Australia in March 2019 but after stringing together her most complete season last summer, she was selected for the Australia A tour of England over the winter, finishing as the tourists' second highest wicket-taker with 11 from five matches, including a five-wicket haul in the third one-dayer.

Flegler said Cheatle would be available for the Test match before returning home to play WNCL once the ODI leg gets underway after Christmas.

"Lauren Cheatle has overcome significant injury setbacks and thoroughly deserves her place in the squad through her performances over the past six months," he said.

A closer look at Lauren Cheatle, the girl from Bowral

"Lauren has playing experience in India (she played three of her seven T20Is for Australia during the T20 World Cup in India in 2016) and provides another fast-bowling option, particularly in regard to the Test match, which is the format she has been selected for."

Queensland big-hitter Grace Harris retains her place in the T20 squad despite not being selected in the three matches against the West Indies last month.

But Harris, like all 16 of her teammates in the Australian squad, has recent experience playing in India following their 4-1 T20 series victory last December and the inaugural season of the Women's Premier League in March.

Australia won the last multi-format series between the two nations held in Queensland in 2021, winning the T20I and ODI series 2-0 and 2-1 respectively with the rain-affected Test ending in a draw for an 11-5 scoreline.

'She's done it all': Teammates hail unflappable Lanning

The Test to open next month's series will revert to a four-day contest, similar to Australia's Test this home summer against South Africa in February, after the Ashes Test in June was played over five days, which finished as the first non-drawn women's Test in eight years with Australia winning by 89 runs on the final day.

"A multi-format series against India in India is exciting and presents a huge challenge for our group," said Flegler.

"Most of our players, through last December's bilateral series or the WPL, have played cricket in Mumbai over the past 12 months and have experienced the conditions.

"We'll have an opportunity to acclimatise to the conditions and our preparation in Mumbai will include a warm-up match against a local opposition."

Following the Test from December 21-24, the two sides will play three ODIs at Wankhede Stadium from December 28-January 2 and three T20Is from January 5-9 at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.

All matches will be broadcast in Australia on Foxtel and Kayo.

Musheer Khan set for India A tour of Australia after impressing in domestic cricket

Musheer Khan is expected to be rewarded for his strong batting in the domestic cricket by being named in the India A squad that will tour Australia later in the year. The 19-year-old is all set to travel to Australia for the India A shadow tour, which will have three ‘four-day’ Tests.

Musheer scored a double hundred in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final and a century in the final. Most recently, Musheer impressed with his 181 runs for India B against India A in the Duleep Trophy first round of fixtures.

The India A team for Australia tour will be picked based on the Duleep Trophy performances and the Irani Cup match between Rest of India and Ranji champions Mumbai, which will be held before tour of Australia.

While a couple of Test specialists and seamers might be sent early to get used to the conditions, two names that are almost certain to make it are Musheer and Rajasthan left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, who has eclipsed Saurabh Kumar as the next best left-arm spinner after Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel.

As things stand, if there are no fitness concerns, Musheer is a certainty for India A’s tour of Australia.

As per PTI, quoting BCCI management, Musheer’s talent and penchant for big scores on big occasions and against quality attacks will work to his advantage.

Also the temperament of playing 373 balls (62.1 overs out of 116 overs) has made him stand out. He also stitched a crucial partnership with tailender Navdeep Saini.

In case of Suthar, Ajit Agarkar and his colleagues are looking at slowly making him Axar’s understudy and put him on regular A tours so that by the time Jadeja is done, he becomes the second left-arm orthodox bowler.
