Warrenpoint Harbour Authority has revealed its exciting cruise schedule for 2023, bringing four magnificent ships to the charming seaside town. Kicking off the summer cruise season is the iconic Waverley, the oldest paddle steamer, offering a sunset cruise experience exclusively for 600 lucky locals on May 30th. Tickets for this unique event sold out within 24 hours, setting a new record for Waverley.

Following the Waverley’s visit, Le Champlain arrives on June 3rd, embarking on an 8-day cruise called “Celtic Secrets and Landscapes.” This will mark the maiden call for both Le Champlain and the World Traveller, which is set to dock on June 6th. The Azamara Pursuit, making its second visit, will arrive on June 15th, bringing up to 800 passengers on its ‘Intensive Ireland’ tour.

David Holmes, CEO of Warrenpoint Harbour, expressed delight at the cruise calls, especially highlighting the Waverley’s sunset cruise and the overwhelming response from the community. Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Cllr Michael Savage, expressed enthusiasm for the cruise ships’ arrival, positioning Warrenpoint as a premier destination for maritime enthusiasts. He highlighted the economic boost these visits bring and emphasized the chance for guests to immerse themselves in the region’s history, heritage, and cultural traditions.

Warm welcome for second cruise ship of the season

azamara cruise ship warrenpoint

Warrenpoint Port today (Friday 5th August) welcomed the Azamara Pursuit, the second of three cruise ships to dock at the County Down port this summer. At 180m in length, the Azamara is the largest ever cruise ship to dock in Warrenpoint.

The ship has a capacity of over 700 passengers and more than 400 crew; and the local community were out in force to welcome them.

The Azamara Pursuit, while on its first visit to Warrenpoint, has a connection with the locality. Back in 2018 it was the largest ship of its kind in many years, to have a refit in Belfast; carried out by Newry headquartered outfitting firm MJM Marine.

Resonate Testing Job Vacancy

At that time the Azamara brand was owned by Royal Caribbean and was subsequently acquired in 2021 by Sycamore Partners, a private equity firm based in New York.

Chairman of Warrenpoint Port, Dr Gerard O Hare CBE DL said, “We are delighted to have welcomed Captain Toledo, his crew, and passengers to Warrenpoint today for the second of our three cruise ship visits to the Port this summer.

“Cruise ships are not a significant part of the Port business model, but it is important from a tourism perspective for the area, that we welcome a small number of these vessels to the Port each year. Many of the passengers have chosen to explore the local area and we know they will have received a warm welcome. Many local people also come out to see the ships, which helps boost business in the town .

”These cruise ships calls are organised and managed by local company Armagh Logistics and facilitated by Hamilton Shipping in Belfast. Brothers John McParland of Armagh Logistics, Leo McParland of Hamilton Shipping and their father Noel have a long association of working with the Port. They continue to work to promote Warrenpoint and the Port to their global client base.

Councillor Micheal Savage, Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down Council said “I am delighted to welcome the Azamara Pursuit on its first visit to Warrenpoint, which is the second cruise ship out of three to come to the Visit Mourne destination. Following two challenging years for the tourism industry, it is great to see the return of cruise ships to the destination and for the guests to experience local attractions and experiences.  These cruise ships are a welcomed economic boost to the local tourism industry.

”As is customary for a first visit to a Port a plaque presentation ceremony took place dockside with plaques presented to the Captain from the Port; Newry, Mourne and Down District Council; and Hamilton Shipping. The ceremony was accompanied by dancing from Brennan Miskelly McCormick School of Irish Dance.

The ship departed at 7.30pm with people lining the shore on both sides of the Lough to wave it off. The final cruise call of the summer will be on Thursday 18th August with a visit from the World Voyager.

Uncategorised, world navigator cruises into warrenpoint.

Warrenpoint Harbour has welcomed back its first cruise ship since 2017 to the Port today (Tuesday 28 th June) with the arrival of the World Navigator, as part of its 13-night London to Dublin cruise.

World Navigator is the first of three cruise ships due to dock in Warrenpoint this summer. The Azamara Pursuit will arrive on 5 th August, followed on 18th August by the World Voyager. Azamara Pursuit will be of particular local interest, as back in 2018 it was the largest ship of its kind to have a refit in Belfast; carried out by local firm MJM Marine.

World Navigator is a small, luxury expedition ship from Florida-based ‘Atlas Ocean Voyages.’ It was launched in August 2021 and has an onboard capacity of 196 passengers and 127 crew.

David Holmes, CEO Warrenpoint Port said, “Atlas Voyages prides itself on ‘luxe-adventure’ so we are delighted that they have chosen to include Warrenpoint on the World Navigator’s itinerary. It is important for global visitors to know how much there is to see and do here. Some of the passengers will be going on arranged tours in the locality, while we have provided the ability for any passengers who wish to do so, to stay very local and spend the day in Warrenpoint and the surrounding area.”

Dr Gerard O Hare, Chairperson of Warrenpoint Harbour Authority Board said, “We are thrilled to welcome the World Navigator to Warrenpoint. While Warrenpoint isn’t a traditional cruise port, we believe that having a small number of vessels calling during the summer months is an added boost to the locality and to the Harbour community; whilst offering a tangible hope of a return to normality after a couple of difficult years. We have no doubt that the passengers and crew will enjoy their time in Warrenpoint and beyond and that they will want to return again to these shores at some time in the future.”

Deputy Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Cllr Aoife Finnegan added, “I am delighted to welcome the World Navigator on its first visit to Warrenpoint, following two challenging years for the tourism industry. It is great to see the return of cruise ships to the Visit Mourne Destination and for the guests to experience local attractions including Castle Ward, and Warrenpoint.  The arrival of the World Navigator and the other ships scheduled for August, will be a welcome economic boost to the local tourism industry.”

Leo McParland, Managing Director of Hamilton Shipping (Port Services) Ltd, added, “Being from the locality we work hard to bring cruises to this beautiful part of the world. We are delighted that our friends in Atlas Ocean Voyages have decided to send their ultra-luxurious ship to Warrenpoint Harbour.”

Hamilton Shipping (Port Services) Ltd in conjunction with Armagh Logistics Ltd will act as Port Agents for all the Cruise calls to Warrenpoint in 2022.

This was the World Navigator’s first visit to Warrenpoint Port so in keeping with tradition welcome plaques were presented to the Captain from David Holmes CEO, Warrenpoint Port; and Deputy Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Cllr Aoife Finnegan; while the guests were entertained with Irish Dancing from local dance school- Scoil Rince De Barra .

Are port shuttles back on? Where?

Azamara's website currently shows the list of inclusive amenities for all guests to include:

"Shuttle service to and from port communities, where available "  (Italics added!)

This is shown on the pages for our cruise, which is the 11-night-ireland-intensive, departing 27 July 2022 on Pursuit. However, when we booked a month ago our confirmation documents included this statement (yes, in RED letters!):

*Please note, these amenities have been modified to comply with current health protocols due to COVID-19. Destination Celebration will now be offered onboard as an adaptation of Amazing Evenings. We have also suspended our shuttle service temporarily

We are wondering if the shuttle service suspension has now ended, so that they would be back on, as least where available?  And if so, how can we find out which ports will have them?  (This affects how we plan for the ports where we might not do a ship excursion, and since this will be our first cruise with Azamara, we have no good idea what to expect.)

Shuttles are definitely back on though not every port authority allows them which is as it was pre pandemic.  If you tell us the ports you’re visiting recent travellers will be able to tell you the specifics

Like

There were complimentary shuttles recently in both Dubrovnik and Ravenna .

Thank you!  We start in Southampton and visit these ports:  Cork (Cobh), Foynes, Galway, Donegal (Kilybegs), Londonderry, Belfast, Warrenpoint, and Dublin.

It's essentially a circumnavigation of Ireland!

Ok, that one hasn’t run at all post pandemic so we’ve no benchmark but given that Ireland is fully open, I would say, if Azamara can run shuttles and they are needed they will.

No shuttle in Livorno

Mrs Miggins

No shuttle is required in Livorno if Azamara are docked in their usual place.  Just walk off the ship over the bridge and you are in the main town.

No sure what the normal place is, but it was a 15 minute walk for us.  We were near the fortress, as that was where the Azamazing evening was held.

we have Ben on other lines that have run shuttles.

Belfast has three different cruise berths. The newest and largest is 3.5 miles from the centre of the city. The two older ones are nearer to the centre, however, there is a not to pleasant walk through the docks.

The good news is, Visit Belfast (a council funded business unit) lay on shuttles for all cruise ships visiting Belfast.

Thanks

Sounds like the usual place.

We have called there numerous times pre-covid and never had a shuttle.

10 days ago we were docked in the first available dock space with a 5 minute walk to the end of Via Grande   Another 5 minutes to the shuttle bus stop for those docked further out in the industrial port area.

On my return to the ship following a lovely walk around the covered market, several churches, coffee and cake by the canal, I passed the shuttle bus stop.  I had previously noticed 3 large (one mega)  ships in port.  There were  several hundred people milling around, many looking a tad unhappy.

I much prefer a 10 minute walk than fighting to get on the next shuttle.

Shuttle in Dubrovnik worked well although I prefer Azamara's more usual tender process to the old town.

Shuttle in Ravenna worked well (apart from a significant lack of information about Ravenna onboard).

5,000+ Club

The last time we were in Dublin, which was pre Covid there was a shuttle but the ship docked in an industrial area that was highly restricted. I'd think either the city or ship would have to provide transportation out of the restricted zone.

Contact your tour company. They will get the information you both need.

We did not have one in Hornfleur and it was not needed

Is there a shuttle TO Ravenna port FROM town for embarkation, or will I need a taxi?

Yes, please.  We plan to sightsee Ravenna on embarkation day, so we may need to drop luggage early (or find a place to store it) then get a transfer from the train station area to the ship in the afternoon.  It has been very hard to find answers.  Anyone who has been on an Azamara cruise starting or ending in Ravenna – please share your experience!

Regards  Ravenna shuttles. See post 1528 by Beatnix on tips for Azamara newbies thread.  Beatnix informed us that there are regular shuttle services.

There was a shuttle in Honfleur when we were there in June this year.

We spent 3 weeks im August on Journey on a B2B.

We had an overnight and emabrkation/disembarkation in Ravenna. On both days the complimentary shuttle was every 30 minutes and takes around 15 minutes. The busses stop at Viale Luigi Carlo Farini.

I wondered about the shuttle on emabrkation day, as there where only around 50 B2B-guests.

So you did have the shuttle on embarkation/disembarkation day?  We will be starting in Ravenna with an overnight, but want to use the shuttle on embarkation day for sightseeing after we check in.

Exactly the information we needed for our upcoming October trip on the Onward. Thanks! We finish our first cruise and start our second in Ravenna, with an overnight in Ravenna.

Azamara Pursuit Itineraries

Azamara pursuit review, review of azamara pursuit.

The 2001-built (as "R-Eight"/R8) Azamara Pursuit cruise ship (fka "P&O Adonia") is the third of all four identical R-Class ships in the Azamara fleet - together with Azamara Quest , Azamara Journey and Azamara Onward (Pacific Princess) . As "Adonia", the liner was one of the P&O UK's "adult ships" - together with Oriana and Arcadia . In the period 2016-2017, the vessel was renamed "Adonia fathom" and served Carnival Corporation 's "fathom" brand with itineraries to Cuba leaving round-trip Miami .

The vessel (IMO number 9210220) is currently Malta- flagged (MMSI 248762000) and registered in Valletta .

History - construction and ownership

Azamara Cruises was a fully-owned subsidiary company of RCG-Royal Caribbean Group until 2021. Founded in 2007 as "Azamara Club Cruises", the company was rebranded in 2009 (Azamara Cruises) and 2019 (Azamara). Azamara ships were originally built as R-Class vessels for Renaissance Cruises (1989-founded/2001- defunct ).

Azamara Pursuit cruise ship (Adonia)

In January 2021, Azamara's parent company RCG-Royal Caribbean announced an agreement to sell the brand for USD 201 million (~EUR 165,8 M / ~GBP 147,6 M / carve-out transaction) to Sycamore Partners. Sycamore Partners acquired the entire company and its 3 ships, plus all the associated intellectual property rights and goodwill. The all-cash transaction was closed in 2021-Q1. Sycamore Partners (shipowner) is a 2011-founded, NYC -headquartered private equity firm with USD 15+ billion in capital and assets under management. Among the largest of the Sycamore Partners-owned companies are Belk Inc (department store chain), Talbots (retailer of clothing-shoes-fashion accessories), Nine West Holdings (designer and wholesaler of branded clothing-shoes-accessories) and Staples Inc (office retailer).

The 694-passenger ship Azamara Pursuit was formerly operated as "R Eight" (Renaissance Cruises, between 2001-2003), Minerva II (Swan Hellenic, 2003-2007), Royal Princess (Princess Cruises, 2007-2011) and Adonia (P&O UK, 2011-2018). Of this class (with the same design) are also the following ships in the fleets of Oceania Cruises ( Insignia , Nautica , Regatta , Sirena ) and Princess Cruises ( Pacific Princess ).

On September 26, 2017, Azamara ( RCCL Royal Caribbean subsidiary company) announced an agreement with P&O UK ( Carnival Corporation subsidiary company) to purchase the Adonia ship. The vessel's fleet transfer from P&O to Azamara was scheduled for March 2018. Following the extensive drydock refit and refurbishment at "Harland & Wolff Heavy Industries" (shipyard in Belfast Ireland ), the ship was renamed from Adonia to "Azamara Pursuit" (namesake Seabourn Pursuit).

Decks and Cabins

Azamara Pursuit staterooms (352 total, in 24 grades) include 62 Suites, 170 Balcony, 80 Oceanview, 23 Inside. Handicap/wheelchair-accessible cabins (for disabled passengers) are only 5 (2x Balcony, 3x Interior). A total of 247 staterooms have private, step-out balconies. Most cabin balconies are sized 45-60 ft2 / 4-6 m2. The largest accommodations are the World Owners Suite (600 ft2 / 56 m2 plus 215 ft2 / 20 m2 terrace).

The boat has 11 decks , of which 9 are passenger-accessible and 6 with cabins.

Four elevators (2x Forward and 2x Aft passenger lifts) interconnect all decks.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

For a small ship, Azamara Pursuit features plenty of options for each meal. The passengers are also encouraged to explore local cuisine when ashore. The line plans to add a complimentary tapas bar when the ship goes into dry dock in 2016. Overall, the food on board is quite good. There are rotating themes in the buffet and the tables there are spruced up at night with soft glowing orbs. The main dining room pampers with an entree salad every night.

Follows the complete list of Azamara Pursuit restaurants and food bars.

  • Discoveries Restaurant (aft Dining Room, complimentary, with waiter service, open seating Breakfast 8-9:30 am, Lunch 12-1:30 pm, and Dinner 6-9:30 pm)
  • Pool Grill (lunch-only casual dining restaurant with the fast-food menu, made-to-order - pizza, pasta, burgers, fries, salads; complimentary)
  • Windows Cafe (complimentary buffet restaurant; has indoor seating and portside/starboard terraces; open between 6:30 a.m. - 9:30 p.m.; offers early, buffet and late breakfast, buffet lunch, afternoon tea, and casual dinner)
  • Aqualina (dinner-only specialty restaurant with Mediterranean cuisine and seafood; offers free dining for Club Suite passengers; reservations recommended)
  • Prime C (dinner-only specialty restaurant with seafood and steakhouse menu; operates at surcharge, but it's free of charge for "Club Suite" passengers; outside the Prime C there is a Wine Cellar with 8000+ bottles collection; hosts the Wine Corner evening events and offers wine-tastings and private dinner arrangements).

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Because the ship focuses very much on destinations, Azamara Pursuit doesn't have as many daily activities as passengers might find on mainstream cruise ships. There are a couple of trivia sessions each day and some other pastimes, such as origami and Bridge. The Cabaret Lounge is ship's cabaret space, with risers behind, as opposed to a true theater. As the ceilings are low-slung, this space feels more cramped and the type of shows offered there is limited.

Azamara Pursuit cruise ship (Adonia)

Follows the complete list of Azamara Pursuit lounges, clubs and other entertainment venues for kids, teens, and adults.

  • Le Boutique (duty-free luxury shop for bags, gifts, brand jewelry)

Azamara Pursuit Wiki

In June 2018, Azamara officially announced Pursuit's godmothers - Ellen Asmodeo-Giglio (EVP and Chief Revenue Officer of AFAR Travel Magazine USA) and Lucy Huxley (Editor-in-Chief of Travel Weekly UK). Boat's christening ceremony was on August 28, 2018, held in Southampton England . The ceremony was attended by Larry Pimentel (Azamara's CEO). Following the naming ceremony, the boat made a complimentary Maiden Voyage to Cherbourg France for an afternoon VIP event.

In April 2018, the ship joined Azamara's fleet (the sisterships Journey and Quest ). The official delivery from Carnival Corporation was on March 14, 2018, when the vessel was renamed "Azamara Pursuit" (namesake Seabourn Pursuit) and received its new Captain - Carl Smith. The liner then entered drydock for classification and inspection by the new owner (RCCL), then crossed the Atlantic Ocean to Belfast Ireland for a 4-month drydock refurbishment at Harland+Wolf" shipyard.

Azamara Pursuit's "Inaugural Cruise" was scheduled for August 1, 2018, leaving roundtrip from Southampton to Norway Fjords. Prices started from USD 4500 pp. Azamara ship's namesake is Seabourn Pursuit (2023-built).

The vessel (Chantiers de l’Atlantique yard/hull number Z31) is powered by four WARTSILA marine diesel engines (model 12V32) with combined output 18,6 MW. The propulsion consists of 2x propeller shafts and 2x FPPs/fixed-pitch propellers. The registered shipowner is SP CRUISES VESSEL AP LTD, while the current ship manager is V SHIPS LEISURE SAM.

Adonia was one of P&O UK's adults-only ships - together with the fleetmates Arcadia and Oriana .

By design (as a Renaissance-class vessel), the ship's sisters are Insignia , Nautica , Regatta , Sirena , as well as the fleetmates Azamara Journey , Azamara Quest , Azamara Onward . The vessel was built in 2001 for Renaissance Cruises under the name “R Eight”. The same year, Renaissance ceased operations and the company filed for bankruptcy. The ship was seized by creditors and until 2003 was laid up in Port of Marseille (France). In 2003 it re-entered service (as “Minerva II”) for Swan Hellenic. In April 2007, the ship completed its Swan Hellenic service and was transferred to Princess Cruises. Renamed to “Royal Princess“, the ship entered into service in April 2007.

MV Adonia was christened in a dual christening ceremony (together with Oceana ) on May 21, 2003. Ship's godmother was HRH Anne (Princess Royal) and her daughter Zara Phillips. The list of other P and O cruise ships named by British Royals includes Oriana (April 6, 1995, by HM The Queen), Aurora (April 27, 2000, by HRH Princess Royal) and Britannia (March 10, 2015, by HM The Queen).

On December 9, 2009, Princess Cruises officially announced that the Royal Princess ship will be transferred to P&O UK and renamed “MV Adonia”. The vessel was transferred to P&O UK in 2009 after an engine room fire accident. It debuted for P&O UK on May 21, 2011, when was renamed and christened by the Welsh singer Shirley Bassey.

The R 8 ship was never operated by Renaissance Cruises since this company filed for bankruptcy in 2001. The ship was seized by the line's creditors and laid up for 2 years in Marseille. In 2003 started the ship's actual service history under the name Minerva 2 - as part of the Swan Hellenic cruise line's fleet (a Carnival brand).

  • In 2007, the ship joined Princess Cruises fleet as " Royal Princess " (link to the new ship 2013).
  • In 2011, Royal Princess was transferred to P&O UK's fleet and started operations as "mv Adonia".

Adonia was transferred in 2016 to the new (Carnival-owned) “fathom Cruise Line” offering 7-day Caribbean cruises from Miami to Cuba and Dominican Republic (on year-round roundtrip schedule from Florida). Adonia rejoined P&O UK in June 2017, after a year of "impact tourism" Fathom operations. The cruise liner completed its last voyage from Miami to Cuba on May 14, 2017, then entered drydock in Freeport Bahamas . The refurbishment added a wine bar (curated by TV’s Olly Smith) and a Glass House (specialty restaurant). Then the ship crossed the Atlantic Ocean (without passengers) reaching Portland on June 14 for a wash and brush-up before being welcomed back to Southampton the following day by a fire tug shooting jets of water.

Adonia's summer season in Europe ended in November 2017. Followed Transatlantic repositioning to the Caribbean for a 6-month season of 14-night fly-cruises out of Barbados .

Azamara Pursuit refurbishment 2018 review

The 2-month long drydock (June-July, following the transfer from P&O UK) was done at Harland+Wolff shipyard ( Belfast Ireland ) and resulted in the following changes:

  • Large touch screen displays were installed in several areas around the ship. They allow passengers (for free) to send digital postcards, explore world atlas maps and also provide Azamara Cruises itineraries and ports of call information.
  • On Deck 4, Inspiration Center has a 98-inch touchscreen (interactive system provides information on future cruises - itineraries, ports, excursions).
  • On Deck 10, The Drawing Room (Library) and the Living Room both have interactive tabletops (used for sending digital postcards, Scribble app, Internet / social media websites).
  • All public areas (restaurants, bars, lounges) were re-furniture.

All cabins and suites were redesigned and received new furniture, carpeting, wall covers, fabrics, shelving, curtains, bedding sets (pillows, duvets), new lighting and smart HDTVs (interactive system). All bathrooms were redesigned. All high-grade Suites received modern furniture, dining tables, drapes, media consoles, and sound systems.

The shipboard Wi-Fi coverage was upgraded to shipwide (via “Pervasive Wi-Fi” system). The new Interactive TV system (in all cabins) offers movies on demand, live TV programming, onboard event schedules, weather updates, itinerary/port information. The system also allows shore excursion booking through the TV, as well as room service orders.

The boat's staterooms number was decreased from 356 (Adonia) to 340 (Pursuit). The number of crew/staff was increased from 300 (Adonia) to 400 (Pursuit).

2018 refurbishment cost Azamara Cruises GBP 50 million (EUR 56 million / USD 65,5 million).

In 2021 (September) the ship was drydocked at Navantia Shipyard ( Cadiz Spain ), mainly for general maintenance (technical and routine) works and repainting (hull and superstructure).

  • While operating as a "fathom cruise ship", Adonia continued to be serviced by P and O Cruises. P&O UK provided the ship's management, crew, and staff, all hotel services, food, and drinks.
  • On March 21, 2016, the owned by Carnival Corporation Fathom cruise line officially received the Cuban government's permission to operate the itineraries to Cuba from the USA. Adonia's cruise itinerary program started on May 1, 2016, with 7-day round-trips from Miami.

Adonia's "first" P&O cruise in 2017 was a 7-night Western European itinerary (June 16-23) roundtrip from Southampton and visiting Bordeaux France, Guernsey Channel Islands , and Honfleur France . Adonia's last Cuban cruise from Miami ended on May 14, 2017. The ship then entered into drydock in Freeport Bahamas for refurbishment.
