Forget the Metro: Paris’s beautiful river is the best way to see the city’s sights – and beyond

The Top Paris Canal and River Cruises

Why not take a Seine river cruise in Paris?

There’s no more romantic or exhilarating way to explore Paris than by hopping on a boat, popping a bottle of something bubbly and cruising along the Seine and the capital’s canals.

From themed cruises to self-drive boats and elegant yachts, Culture Trip has picked the best journeys to enjoy on Paris’s waterways. If you have the luxury of time, consider taking an extended full-day cruise out of the city and exploring the idyllic – and criminally under-explored – landscapes of the surrounding region.

Cruise the Seine with Paris Canal

Paris Canal has been operating for over 30 years and offers themed cruises on the Seine, the Marne and the canals around Paris . The Paris Discover Cruise takes in top sites such as Notre Dame , the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower, while Paris Canal’s Guinguette tours float past city highlights to the sound of traditional French music. The company’s cruises are led by amusing, cultured guides.

Take a cruise along the Seine

Take a boat out on the Canal de l’Ourcq with Canauxrama

Canauxrama is another company that sails not just on the Seine but also on the canals and other major rivers in the Paris region. One of its most scenic routes takes you from the capital to the town of Trilbardou on the Canal de l’Ourcq, the smallest navigable canal in France. This one-day journey starts at 8.30am on the Bassin de la Villette and finishes back there (after a bus transfer) at 7pm. The route’s best features include romantic stone bridges, striking rows of poplars and the chance to experience the traditional techniques of 19th-century horse-drawn boaters.

Canauxrama sails on the canals and other major rivers in the Paris region

Take a canal cruise on the Marne

Another excellent route that Canauxrama offers goes between Paris and Bry-sur-Marne. It begins in the Paris Arsenal Marina, which is overlooked by the July Column of the Place de la Bastille, and heads east along the Seine after taking in magnificent views of the rear of Notre Dame. Other unique views along the way include the unusually designed Bibliothèque de France, the verdant and protected countryside of the region and the many guingettes , or floating nightclubs, that line the canal.

Canauxrama also offers a route along the Seine

Embark on a Paris boat tour with Marin d’Eau Douce

With Marin d’Eau Douce you can be the captain of your own cruise. The company has a fleet of 22 electric self-drive boats that can accommodate a maximum of five, seven or 11 people. No licence of any kind is required to rent one and you can take to the 40 kilometres (64 miles) of waterways provided by the Canal Saint Martin , the Canal de l’Ourcq and the Bassin de la Villette for anywhere between one hour and a whole day. The company’s terrace also serves pre- or post-trip refreshments, including French charcuterie, cheese, salads and tapas.

Be the captain of your own cruise with Marins d’Eau Douce

Go on a royal outing with Le Prince

Paris River offers a variety of ride and rental options from their base in the western suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt. Le Prince is a stunning 12-foot pontoon boat that can comfortably accommodate 12 passengers, including those with reduced mobility. There are six types of cruise and themed tour, which sail on the Seine, Canal Saint-Martin, Canal Saint-Denis and Canal de l’Ourcq. You’ll pay slightly more if you choose to cruise in the evening or at the weekend.

Enjoy a Paris boat trip with Un Bateau à Paris

Un Bateau à Paris is a recent addition to Paris’s river and canal cruise scene, having set up shop in 2017. The minimum rental time for this company is slightly higher than average at two hours, but it is one of the most affordable companies in the city and its cruises remain great value for money. Up to 12 guests can hop aboard its charming 24-foot yacht.

Un Bateau à Paris

Sail Paris’s canals on a 24-foot pontoon

This 24-foot pontoon has been on Parisian waters since 2014, taking up to 12 people at a time on a mixture of group and private cruises. To complete the voyage, you can choose between a musical playlist or an English or Spanish commentary from your skipper. You can also bring a picnic and beverages aboard or leave this to the crew to organise.

Charter a motor yacht

This classic motor yacht can carry between two and 12 people on river cruises lasting as little as an hour. The boat, which is made of exotic wood, is perfect for romantic evenings, corporate or special occasion dinners, cocktail parties or for sightseeing in style. Prices vary, depending on how extravagant a cruise you choose.

Canal Cruises in Paris: A Boat Ride on the Canal Saint Martin

Last updated: February 20, 2019 - Written by Jessica Norah 28 Comments

On our last visit to Paris we took a boat cruise on the Canal Saint Martin. While a good percentage of Paris visitors take a boat cruise on the famous Seine River, very few venture onto Paris’ canals. In fact, I think most people don’t happen to know that Paris has canals, let alone that there is over 80 miles of canals that form the Paris canal network, which also includes the interconnected Canal de L ‘Ourcq and Canal Saint-Denis.

This canal network was commissioned by Napoleon I in the early 1800’s to provide Parisians with clean drinking water and provide an alternative waterway for industrial boat traffic other than the Seine. Today there is little industrial boat traffic on the Canal Saint Martin, but the city has recently invested millions of euros in developing the areas around the canal to allow for boat cruises, biking, and scenic walkways.

If you’ve already done a boat cruise on the Seine River , you might want to think about doing a cruise on one of Paris’ canals. We’ll tell you how to plan your own cruise down the Canal Saint Martin, share our tips, and tell you about our own experience doing a boat cruise on the Canal Saint Martin with Canauxrama.

Planning Your Cruise of the Canal Saint Martin

The first decision is to choose a cruise company. There are two main companies that regularly run cruises on the Canal Saint Martin, these are Canauxrama and Paris Canal . We’ll give you some information on both companies so you can choose the one that best fits your schedule, budget, and location in Paris.

Contact Information for Canauxrama and Paris Canal?

Phone: +33 01 42 40 96 97

Fax: +33 01 42 40 77 30

Website: http://www.pariscanal.com

**Note: The office for both companies are located almost next to each other.

When are the Cruises?

Canauxrama currently offers Canal Saint-Martin cruises year-round while Paris Canal offers them from about March to November. Both provide morning and afternoon cruises, see websites for specific cruise times and dates.

Cruise Departure Points?

Note that all cruises see most of the same sights and that for both companies you’ll start at one of the two locations and end at the other. It is not a round-trip cruise.

Bassin de la Villette 13, Quai de la Loire, Paris 19th arrondissement (Metro: Jaurès) Near Place Stalingrad.

Port de L’Arsenal, across from 50 Boulevard de la Bastille, Paris 12th arrondissement (Metro: Bastille) Near Place de la Bastille.

Quai Anatole France, in front of the Musée d’Orsay, PARIS 7th arrondissement (Metro: Solférino or RER C train station: Musée d’Orsay).

Porte de Pantin, near the southern entrance to the Parc de la Villette in front of the red Information/Ticket Center also know as the “Folies des Visites du Parc”, 19th arrondissement (Metro: Porte de Pantin).

Cost of Canal Saint Martin Cruise?

Adults are 16 euros, children age 4-11 are 8.5 euros, and children under 4 are granted free admission. Students and seniors with valid ID are 12 euros (discount not valid on weekends or public holidays). Special group pricing for groups of 20 or more people.

Adults are 19 euros, children (age 4-11) are 12 euros, young adults (age 12-25) are 16 euros, and those over 60 years of age are 16 euros. Paris Canal also offers a family deal where 2 adults with 2 children under age 18 can buy a family ticket for 49 euros. Special group pricing for groups of 20 or more people. We could not locate a price for children under the age of 4 so assume they get free admission.

Length of Canal Saint-Martin Cruise?

The standard Canal Saint-Martin cruise is 2.5 hours.

The standard Canal Saint-Martin cruise is 2.5 hours. Note that a short amount of this time is actually cruising the Seine as your cruise will either begin or end near the Musée d’Orsay. However, this is not a replacement for an hour-long Seine cruise as much of the time and focus is on the Canal Saint Martin.

How to Make Reservations?

Reservations for both companies can be made online or stopping by their office. It is recommended that you make reservations in advance for your cruise.

Narration aboard the Boat Cruises?

Narration is provided by live guides in both French and English. Typed summaries on the Saint-Martin Canal cruise are also available in the following languages: German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Portuguese, Chinese, and Dutch.

Narration is provided by live guides in both French and English.

Food and drinks on the Cruise?

On the standard cruises, there are snacks and drinks available for purchase; however, note that the offerings are not always consistent and meals are not served. It is best to plan to eat before or after the cruise. There are also toilets available on all boats by both companies.

Canauxrama boats do stop at restaurants on their one-day cruises and sometimes offer other cruises that include food.

Can I cruise the Canal de L ‘Ourcq and Canal Saint Denis as well?

Yes! Not only do both of these companies run cruises on the Canal Saint-Martin, they also have cruises on the Seine River, Canal de l”Ourcq, Canal Saint-Denis, and the Marne River (a river east of Paris that connects to the Seine and was the subject of a number of Impressionist paintings).

Why we chose Canauxrama?

For us, we chose Canauxrama because it was slightly less expensive for us than the Paris Canal cruise and the Port de L’Arsenal was the closest of available departure points. Also at the time, Canauxrama was offering discounts for tickets booked online.

Tips & Advice in Preparing for your Paris Saint-Martin Canal Cruise

• Make reservations in advance if possible. If you can get a flexible date ticket, then you can try to plan to go when the weather is nice.

• Make sure you know the time and departure point of your cruise and figure out where the departure point is beforehand and how much time it will take you to get there. If you have any questions about timing or location that are not answered by the websites, e-mail or call the company and ask for more information. Don’t take a chance at the missing the boat like we did!

• Unless the weather is really bad, the boats will take off rain or shine if there are enough cruisers, so dress appropriately as it can be quite cold on the boats (particularly in the mornings) and bring an umbrella or poncho if rain is expected. While all boats have covered and indoor seating, you’ll want to at least come out on deck to take a close-up look at some of the locks during the cruise.

• The cruises are fairly long at 2.5 hours so if you are traveling with kids (or adults with short attention spans) bring some things they can do quietly while sitting. Also note that there is not really food aboard so plan to eat before or after the cruise.

• Leave time before or after your cruise to explore the Canal St. Martin area in the 10th arrondissement and/or the Parc de Villette in the 19th as both are places that most visitors don’t explore. Many cruisers get of the boat and head to the next thing on their itinerary and regret not having time to spend more time in these areas. We spent most of a lovely morning and afternoon walking around the 10th and 12th arrondissements.

Our Experience doing a Boat Cruise down the Canal Saint Martin

Prior to leaving for our trip, I had purchased two ticket vouchers online for a Canauxrama St. Martin Canal cruise. We printed them off and they were valid for 1 year after purchase, giving us flexibility about when we actually used the tickets.

Once we got to Paris, we chose a day but unfortunately to a series of unfortunate events and not enough planning, we literally ended up missing the boat by about 10 minutes.

While initially I got quite upset, we ended up spending a lovely, but rainy, morning spent walking along the canal, exploring the neighborhood, and having a nice lunch at a little restaurant called Chez Marie-Louise. You can read more about that experience here .

After some debate, we decided to forgo other plans and come back two days later to do the cruise. We took the morning cruise out of the Port de L’Arsenal. It was rainy and there were about 20 other people who boarded the boat with us.

Paris Canal Saint Martin boat cruise boat ride on Paris canals St. Martin canal Canauxrama Paris Canal

After leaving the Port de L’Arsenal, we navigated our way into an underground stone vault. This interesting vault is 2 kilometers long and lit by 37 lanterns. Sometimes you’ll see a light show or a projected film on the vault walls, but we did not experience this on our particular trip. Our pictures turned out terribly here.

Next you’ll come to your first lock, this one a double lock. The guides will explain how the locks work and you can ask additional questions if you want more details on the process. Here is a simple pictorial view of what happens.

Paris Canal Saint Martin boat cruise boat ride on Paris canals St. Martin canal Canauxrama Paris Canal

Over the 2.5 hour cruise, you’ll experience a total of four double locks and two swinging bridges. Each lock has its own name and history and this will be shared as you pass through each one.

One of the locks that stood out was the Ecluse des Morts which is named after a 4th to 5th century Merovingian necropolis. To expand on the death theme, the Montfaucon Gallows were built on a nearby hill and had the capacity to hang up to 60 Parisians at one time. The gallows were not destroyed until the French Revolution.

In addition to the locks and swinging bridges, you’ll also glide under a number of metal footbridges as you pass tree-lined streets, cafes, tiny parks, houseboats, and quirky boutiques. People often stand on the footbridges and look down to watch the boats pass by.

IMG_5163

The guides were friendly and the female guide said everything in both French and English. It was clear that she was a native French speaker and sometimes her English was a bit difficult to understand, but you are also given a printed sheet with much of the commentary so that even if you don’t catch everything the guide says, you can still follow along.

They were also happy to answer questions. While inside the boat, we had no problem hearing the narration, but one problem was that when we went to sit outside, we had a really difficult time hearing the guide at all. This was at least partly due to the fact they were keeping the outside door closed due to the rainy weather so it is likely much easier to hear when the door is left open.

As you move towards the Parc de la Villette, you’ll notice a bit of the remaining industrial buildings and it will look a lot less like the more touristy central Paris. Along the way, you’ll hear about the history of the Canal Saint-Martin, several famous buildings along the canal, and the old village of La Villette.

The guides will also share pop culture references along with the modern uses of the canals and the areas along the canal. For instance, the infamous man who stole the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in 1911 lived in a small house along the Canal Saint-Martin.

For movie buffs, the Canal Saint-Martin was featured in the 1938 Hôtel du Nord, directed by Marcel Carné which serves as the inspiration for the names of the Canauxrama boats. More recently, you might have seen the canal featured in the 2001 movie Amélie where the character Amélie Poulain is seen skipping stones at the locks of the canal.

Paris Canal Saint Martin boat cruise boat ride on Paris canals St. Martin canal Canauxrama Paris Canal

Overall, we enjoyed a very leisurely and interesting cruise along the Canal Saint Martin. While many Paris attractions have you walking around and on the move, this was a nice slow relaxing float down the canal.

Now, I do want to note that the cruise is very slow moving as it takes a lot of time to navigate the locks and bridges along the path. I think a few passengers on the boat grew quite bored and disinterested after the first couple of locks as the process is pretty much the same each time. This is definitely not an hour long cruise along the Seine River where you are hit over the head with notable and world-famous sites at every angle.

There is nothing comparable to the Eiffel Tower , Louvre, or Notre-Dame along the Canal Saint-Martin so this is something to think about when considering this cruise. You’ll learn and experience the navigation of locks and swinging bridges, you’ll get to see less touristy areas of Paris, and you’ll learn some history of the area. If this does not sound appealing, don’t take this tour!

You can still experience the area, footbridges, and locks by exploring the area by foot or by bicycle. No matter how you do it, I definitely think the 10th arrondissement is an area that deserves to be explored. While we got to spend quite a bit of time in the Canal Saint Martin area on foot, we unfortunately did not have time to explore much of the Parc de Villette, but hope to do so on a return trip to Paris!

How will I get back? Is it too far to walk back? Thanks, Bonnie

Hi Bonnie, It depends where you are staying if you would walk about after the canal cruise. Which cruise you are planning to take and where does it end? If it is too far for you to walk back after the cruise, you will likely be within walking distance of a metro station and/or bus stop. Taxis and rideshare are also options. Best, Jessica

Very helpful post. We look forward to cruising the St. Martin Canal. Do you also have posts on the Marne cruises? Thanks

Hi Barbara, Glad this information was helpful for planning your St. Martin Canal cruise – I don’t have any posts about the Marne unfortunately as I have not done a cruise on it yet but the same companies offer some cruises of the Marne Canal/River I think. Best, Jessica

Do either of the canal tours allow small dogs (in carriers) on the boats?

May 6, 2017 at 1:47 am

Hi Neal, Yes, Canauxarama does allow small dogs (and other pets) in carriers aboard most of their Canal Saint Martin boat cruises subject to space. I do not know about Paris Canal or other companies that do canal cruises, but if you have a certain cruise in mind, I would give them a call or send an email to check. Enjoy your time in Paris! Great info! THX! I have done the Seine tour many times and look forward to doing a canal tour, which I hadn’t even realized existed, on my next trip to Paris in September. I also checked out the day trips offered by one of the tour operators you mentioned and will do one of these as well. I always like to do something new when I stay at a place I have previously visited, and I particularly enjoy excursions via boat. I have done similar excursions on visits to Amsterdam and highly recommend these as well. Travel safely, and have grand adventures– Donna

I never knew boat rides were available on the canal! I just got back from a trip to Paris in the fall and loved every minute there!

The canal rides are nice alternatives if you’ve already one the Seine boat cruises. Much slower and peaceful and less crowded.

How have I never heard of these canals?! That is shocking, so thanks for posting this. I can’t believe how affordable these cruises are. When I travel France I will have to check them out!

February 17, 2014 at 9:05 pm

I don’t think most visitors to Paris know about the canals or that they can tour them, but it is a great way to explore this area of Paris. We found that by combining a few hours of walking with the tour, we were able to really appreciate this area.

I used to live not too far from Canal St. Martin – off of rue Oberkampf actually. I loved going to the canal on a sunny day with a good book and a picnic lunch and just passing the day away. It’s certainly a less touristy part of town than others, but has its own particular charms. There are quite a few great cafes and bars, for example. Definitely a part of town worth checking out!

February 17, 2014 at 8:40 pm

Hi Amy, it seems like a cool area to live in Paris. We definitely enjoyed the several hours we spent wondering around the canal and the general area. We also discovered the nearby Parc des Buttes-Chaumont on our walk. Would love to spend more time in this area on future visits.

Note that dinner cruise times may vary from 6pm to 9pm, so plan accordingly.

Prices can fluctuate based on various factors:

  • Sightseeing cruises typically range from €13-€39.
  • Lunch cruises are priced between €41-€265.
  • Dinner cruises can cost from €55 up to €305.

Traveling with children? Confirm the cruise line’s definition of “child” age and the potential for reduced rates.

Decide on the duration of your cruise experience. A quick sightseeing tour can last 30 minutes, while extensive dinner cruise can extend over 2 hours.

Each cruise has its unique itinerary. Opt for a route that showcases your desired monuments. Most Seine River cruises sail from the Eiffel Tower to Notre Dame at the least.

Meal options

Gastronomy is an important element of the Parisian experience. Cruises offer menus ranging from traditional bistro dishes to gourmet selections.

Before making a reservation, you should check the menu online to ensure that the dishes suit your preferences. Also note the availability of vegetarian and other dietary options.

Drink options

Consider the drink arrangements. Some cruises include beverages in their package, while others might bill them separately.

Choice of seating

Your vantage point matters. For a breathtaking view of the beauty of Paris, window seats are ideal, although they can be pricey.

Some cruises also offer exclusive seating at the boat’s prow for an unmatched panorama.

Ambiance on board

Entertainment can enhance your cruise experience. Check to see if the cruise you choose offers live music, dance performances, or other forms of entertainment.

Accessibility

If you or your travel companions have mobility difficulties, it is essential to ensure that the journey is accessible.

Some boats are fully equipped for wheelchair users, while others may not be as accommodating.

Travel tips

  • Advanced Booking : The Seine River Cruises are a must-do in Paris, especially between April and October. To skip the long lines and potential heartbreak of a sold-out sign, book your tickets online in advance.
  • Strategic Departure Point : Navigate smart! When you’re in a city as expansive as Paris, every minute counts. Check the departure spot before booking – you might just find one that’s a stone’s throw from your hotel or fits snugly into your day’s plan.
  • Punctuality Pays : Here’s a little secret – the best seats on these cruises are grabbed first. So, if you want that perfect spot, don’t dawdle. Be on time, maybe even a tad early!
  • Combo Deals : If you love good deals, consider combo tickets. Why pay more when you can club the Seine River Cruise with another Paris attraction and save some euros?
  • Camera Ready : You’ll kick yourself if your camera dies mid-cruise. These views are postcard-perfect, so charge up and maybe even throw in a spare battery or power bank.
  • Weather Prep : Paris weather loves to surprise! So, even if the sun’s out, slip an umbrella or a light jacket into your bag. If the clouds roll in, you’ll thank us.
  • Dining Options : Got food allergies or on a special diet? Give the cruise a heads up if there’s a meal involved. They’re usually quite accommodating, but a surprise vegan can throw off their kitchen game.
  • Dress Code : Some dinner cruises have a fancier vibe. Check the dress code before you go. It’s always better to be a tad overdressed than the other way around.
  • ID Essentials : It might sound obvious, but in the excitement, many forget. Keep a photo ID handy – a passport, a driver’s license, anything official. It’s usually a quick check, and then you’re aboard!

We hope this guide has steered you closer to your ideal Seine River cruise. Have a favorite or still undecided? If you’ve got queries or additional insights, drop them in the comments below.

Testimonials

The evening went very well, the staff on board was great, the dj too and we have had a mild weather throughout the cruise ! The guests were delighted with their evening!

Frédéric S.

We and all our guests appreciated the kindness and the professionalism of the crew. The catering team has been available and assured diligent and pleasant service. The different bites and verrines have been greatly appreciated, and the passion fruit cake as well as the raspberry cake had a great success.

I highly recommend this boat trip, it was really nice to sail on this canal, discover the locks. The information given about the history of the city was excellent (and funny!). Thank you for this moment!

A cruise much more original and rich in history than the traditional cruise by river boats on the Seine. 2h30 of relaxation, locks, bridges crossing and other very unusual underground passages. Good atmosphere and comments of high quality.

Caroline B.

We had only positive feedback, the food was of good quality, the route (very little known by internationals, provincials and Parisians alike) aroused great interest.

Enjoying the Water: Cruising Canals and Waterways in Paris

Tour Companies, Cruise Packages and More

best canal tour paris

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

If you've already taken a sightseeing and/or dinner cruise on the Seine River and are looking for a more offbeat kind of tour, there's much more to Parisian waterways than the world-famous river. Why not do something different and go explore the city's 81 miles of canals and underground waterways , running all the way from the Ile Saint Louis near Notre Dame Cathedral to the northern tip of the city at the Canal de l'Ourq? Or get out of the city for a day and cruise the gorgeous banks of the Marne River, following in the footsteps of impressionist painters such as Manet, Renoir and Pissaro?

If you've already made the rounds of the Parisian sights and tours recommended in your average guidebook, I definitely recommend going off the beaten path and exploring the waters in and around Paris from a very different vantage.

Touring the Canal St Martin: Another Side of Paris

Historically used as an industrial waterway, the Canal St Martin runs for 4.5 miles, connecting the Seine River to the northerly Canal de l'Ourq. Unbeknownst to most, the canal runs underground for a stretch, between the Bastille and Republique metro stations on Paris's right bank ( rive droite ) .

Several tour companies offer regular cruises on the canal, which allows you to see some of the city of light's less-trodden areas, many of which are charming. The canal operates on an elaborate system of locks, making for an intriguing display as the water rushes through and rises and bridges are raised to let the boats pass.

Canauxrama: Guided Tours of the Canal

Canauxrama offers two-and-a-half hour cruises of the Canal Saint Martin, including a lively commentary on the history of northeastern Paris, one of Paris' best-kept secrets. Cruises begin at the "Marina Arsenal" docking point and end at the lively and ultramodern Parc de la Villette   and the Cite des Sciences (or you can start and end in the inverse direction), allowing you to continue exploring secret nooks of the city.

Marne River Tours: Take a Day Trip On the Impressionists' Trail

Interested in taking a day trip to the verdant banks of the Marne River , which inspired impressionist painters included Camille Pissarro, Auguste Renoir and Edouard Manet? Canauxrama also organizes daylong cruises to this beautiful and consistently underrated area of the Parisian region. Pack a picnic lunch on a sunny day and enjoy your meal on the riverside. I have tried this tour and highly recommend it.

Transport and tranquility are usually mutually exclusive, but not if you book a houseboat and cruise along France 's canals and navigable rivers. You can stop at your whim to pick up fresh produce from a local market, dine at a village restaurant or glide by a local château by bicycle.

There are thousands of kilometers of rivers and canals that link together in a vast web touching much of the country and allowing access to the surrounding seas. Changes in altitude are taken care of by a system of écluses (locks) and boats range from self-hire houseboats to luxury hotel barges.

There are hundreds of equally wonderful canal and river routes, dotted with small houses where the lock keepers used to live (and some still do). Below is just a sample of what lies ahead. Additional world-class routes include the Canal de la Marne au Rhin, a link between Paris and Alsace and Germany via the Rhine, and the 360km-long Canal de Nantes à Brest in Brittany .

Boat on Canal du Midi, France

Canal du Midi

Stretching for 241km between Toulouse and Sète , the Canal du Midi is one of the great waterways of southern France. Completed in 1681 at the behest of Louis XIV and classified as a World Heritage site since 1996, the canal was designed to provide a trading route between major French ports. Combined with the Canal de Garonne, it forms part of the Canal des Deux Mers (Canal of the Two Seas), which enables boats to travel all the way from the Atlantic (near Bordeaux) to the Mediterranean.

It’s a work of art as much as engineering, lined with stately plane trees, puttering houseboats and gorgeous riverside towns. You can stroll or pedal along the towpaths as you stop along the canal’s route, or visit its cities – Toulouse, Agde, Minerve, Béziers , Narbonne, Carcassonne and Sète.

It’s also worth stopping at the Musée Canal du Midi in St-Ferréol, which explores the history of the waterway and the life of its chief engineer, Paul Riquet.

Canal de Garonne

With 53 locks, this serene canal falls from the junction with the Canal du Midi at Toulouse to Castets-en-Dorthe at the Garonne river. The Garonne then lets out to the Bay of Biscay just beyond wonderful Bordeaux , a jolly stop for its gorgeous architecture and wine aplenty . Or, take a day trip from the boat to Sauternes for its sweet and white wines, or Roquefort, for its world-famous cheese . Another fascinating stop along the way is Moissac, a large riverside town, partly on an “island” formed between the Tarn and the Garonne Canal. Its crowning glory is the Unesco-listed Abbaye St-Pierre , a monumental abbey church.

Canal de Bourgogne

Canal boating between Bourgogne vineyards really can’t be beat. Burgundy's 1200km of placid waterways include the Rivers Yonne, Saône and Seille and a network of canals, including the Canal de Bourgogne, the Canal du Centre, the Canal Latéral à la Loire and the Canal du Nivernais, which are detailed below.

The spectacular 242km Canal de Bourgogne connects the river Saône in the south at Saint-Jean-de-Losne, with the river Yonne at Laroche-Migennes – which in turn connects to the Seine if you want to continue on to Paris. Highlights Include , of course, touring the regions’ magnificent vineyards and sampling the wines, as well as visiting cities like Dijon and Beaune . West of Dijon, along and around the Canal de Bourgogne, the Pays d'Auxois is a rolling land of mustard fields, wooded hills and escarpments dotted with fortified hilltop towns, including Semur-en-Auxois. Tucked into this verdant landscape are a pair of exceptional historical sites, the Cistercian abbey of Fontenay and the MuséoParc Alésia historical museum.

Boating near Rochers du Saussois on the Canal du Nivernais

Canal du Nivernais

Originally constructed for moving firewood from the Morvan’s forests to Paris, the peaceful Canal du Nivernais  crosses the Yonne river valley , sometimes merging with the river itself and connecting the Loire with the Seine. A top spot along the way, the ancient city of Auxerre dates back to Gallo-Roman times and now curves beautifully along the Yonne, with the magnificent Gothic Cathédrale Saint-Étienne d'Auxerre towering overhead.

You can also tour the vineyards – or simply stock the wines of the region – with Chablis being its reigning queen.

Loire Valley canals

A batch of bitty canals interlink between Burgundy and the châteaux-laden Loire Valley . They include the Canal du Centre, Canal latéral à la Loire, and the Canal de Briare.

Midway between Dijon and Lyon , Burgundy's southernmost département , Saône-et-Loire, is an inviting land of rolling green fields criss-crossed by hedgerows and dotted with indigenous Charolais beef cattle. The Canal du Centre and some fabulous bike paths meander through Saône-et-Loire's forests and pastureland.

During the region's medieval heyday it was home to the largest church in all of Christendom, the magnificent abbey of Cluny . These days it's a sleepier place, but pretty châteaux and little-known Romanesque chapels still sit around almost every bend, hinting at Saône-et-Loire's long history and making this a delightful area for day trips.

Other regional highlights include wines galore: from the wine-growing villages around Mâcon to Sancerre, which produce some of France's finest whites – taste tests abound.

Shorter hops and day trips on France's canals

If you’re not able to do a full canal cruise, you can also hop aboard a small day trip boat or punt the day away from French cities laced with canals, like Colmar . For example, boat cruises run along the Garonne in Toulouse from the Quai de la Daurade; in summer, some boats also travel onto the Canal du Midi. The two main companies are Les Bateaux Toulousains and Toulouses Croisières .

In the Dordogne Valley  you can go river boating from La Roque Gageac aboard a flat-bottomed gabarre with Gabarres Norbert .

Cycling the canals

Most boats have bikes on board or can arrange cycling day trips. With a vast network of cycling paths, the French canal towpaths are pure two-wheeling joy. Voies vertes (green ways) stretch for thousands of kilometres along old canal towpaths and are also open to walkers and horse riders, and many sections are paved to ensure a silky-smooth ride. Many connect to véloroutes – designated cycling paths .

You can cycle on or very near the chemin de halage (towpath) of the Canal de Bourgogne all the way from Dijon to Migennes (225km). The section from Montbard to Tonnerre (65km) passes by Château d'Ancy-le-Franc ; between Montbard and Pouilly-en-Auxois (58km), spurs go to the Abbaye de Fontenay and Semur-en-Auxois.

Similarly, peaceful towpaths along the Canal du Midi (check out Canal des 2 Mers à Vélo ) link the Atlantic with the Mediterranean via the canals.

Tips for canal travel in France

How to book a french canal trip.

Usually, companies, like Barge Lady Cruises , are brokers that then connect you to the outfit owning the boat or boats. Things to consider are:

  • the size of the boat;
  • whether there will be a skipper on board, and what other staff, like a cook or steward;
  • how many staterooms will there be (and thus people you may share with);
  • what do they offer in the way of day trips and how customizable are they?

...or book a luxury barge cruise instead

Levels can become quite luxe, with your own private chef and bespoke food, drink and day trips. Smaller luxury boats can have as few as two staterooms, with a maximum of four guests, which are perfect for friends or family who want a private boat. A top purveyor in the field is Belmond , with its smaller boat, Allouette on the Canal du Midi, or larger ones like Fleur de Lys in Burgundy.

How to rent a canal boat

If you’re up for piloting yourself, you can hire a boat. They generally accommodate from two to 12 passengers and are fully outfitted with bedding and cooking facilities. Anyone over 18 can pilot a riverboat, but first-time skippers are given a short instruction session so they qualify for a carte de plaisance (temporary cruising permit). The speed limit is 6km/h on canals and 8km/h on rivers. It’s important to read up on the route you will be taking to learn how to handle the locks and other tricks of the waterway. Except in July and August, you can often rent over a weekend.

You can also traverse the waterways by sailboat, but you must unstep (take down) the mast to do so.

Rental agencies abound. They include the following:

France Afloat – Anglophone canal-boat specialist in France, based in Vermenton, 25km southeast of Auxerre. This British-owned, family-run enterprise rents boats and provides advice for trips on France's inland waterways, including the Yonne River, the Canal de Bourgogne and the Canal du Nivernais.

Locaboat Holidays – based in Joigny, 27km northwest of Auxerre – has been renting boats throughout France since 1977. Burgundian destinations for their self-guided explorations include the Canal de Bourgogne, Canal du Centre, Canal du Nivernais and the Yonne and Seine Rivers.

Where to find a map of France's canals

Waterway books with detailed maps are a must. Excellent guides include Breil and Imray , or check out the website French Waterways for loads of info and maps on the country’s canals and waterways.

Rental companies offer boats from late March to mid-November (canals close for repairs in winter). Advance reservations are essential for holiday periods, over long weekends and in July and August, especially for larger boats. The best bet is to go during the shoulder seasons (May and June or September), when the weather is fine but wait times are shorter at the locks, and crowds fewer.

10 Of The Best French Barge Cruises You Should Know About

Best French Barge Cruises

By Heidi Sarna

I’ve enjoyed small-ship cruises of all kinds all over the world, but I’m particularly partial to barge cruises along the canals of France.

Everything I truly desire when traveling is offered on a barge cruise:

  • Delicious healthy local food prepared by a talented chef
  • Good regional wines served at lunch and dinner
  • Intimate atmosphere with just 6 to 12 passengers
  • Lovely open top deck
  • Cozy ensuite cabins
  • Close-up views of France’s pastoral landscape and canal lock system along the way
  • Opportunities to cycle and walk along the canals’ tow path
  • Daily excursions to historical French towns and villages
  • Wine tasting at French vineyards
  • Delicious French cheese served daily
  • Great balance between relaxing and active
  • Absolutely everything is included (except for crew gratuities at the end)

My first barge cruise was aboard the 12-passenger Luciole with a dozen friends, old and new, to celebrate a 50th birthday.

Luciole is definitely one of the best French Canal barge cruises

It was a perfect way to celebrate my dear friend’s milestone in an intimate setting where everything was taken care of for us. We were catered to in a casual, low-key way, as if visiting a distant relative’s beautiful rustic country home.

The vibe was easy-going, yet the standard of service, food and wine was top-of-the-line.

For me, it was the perfect combination.

My Luciole barge cruise, just like most other barge cruises, was six nights long and one-way, cruising about 60 kilometers (about 35 miles) over the course of the week, including passing through numerous locks. Some canal barge cruises might cruise a bit further in a week, up to about 100 kilometers or 60 miles, it depends on the itinerary.

Thanks to the lovely leisurely pace, you’ll feel as if you’ve traveled much further than you have.

VIDEO: Below is what it’s like to pass through a fascinating 19th-century lock on a French canal cruise.

French barge cruise fares include pick-up from Paris (or another major French hub) to the barge, and at the end of the cruise, return transport as well.

I love that barge cruises are all-inclusive and everything is covered in the fares. Not having to pay for drinks or choose between excursions or figure out how to get to the point of embarkation makes a barge cruise convenient and wonderfully carefree.

That said, keep in mind, barge cruise fares are pricey.

Expect to pay somewhere between $4,000 and $8,000 per person for a six-night all-inclusive canal barge cruise in France. If you’d like to charter a barge for a private cruise for your friend or family group (which is a great idea by the way!), there is usually some savings off the per-person rate.

  • Nivernais Canal, Burgundy

I fell in love with the 12-passenger Luciole . On my 6-night barge cruise last summer, I found the service and crew to be fantastic. I loved the old-world look of the Luciole, with wood everywhere for a cozy and welcoming country house feel.

I would definitely count it as one of the best French barge cruises available.

Of its many plusses, another one is that it carries 12 passengers, making it an ideal private charter to celebrate a milestone birthday or anniversary, for just for a group of friends or relatives to get together.

Here’s an excerpt from my full review of Luciole :

“With six overnights on board, from Sunday to Friday, that left five full days to enjoy the cruise.

Each day, there was a three- to four-hour tour that our guide Vincent would take us on, either after breakfast or after lunch. The other half of each day was spent relaxing on deck. Two in our group enjoyed painting the passing scenery from a set of mini watercolors they brought along!

We also pursued walking, jogging or cycling (my passion!) along the towpath, hopping off the barge (and then on again) at the various lock points.

On our canal barge cruise, we passed through four to eight locks a day — a total of 32 locks on the 35-mile stretch we covered on our six-night cruise.  Locks control the flow of water, creating a series of steps to allow a canal, and the boats on it, to cross land that is not level…”

  • Canal du Midi, Southern France

Writer Karl Zimmermann shares his insights and impressions of his week aboard the 6-passenger Roi Soleil.

Karl tells us:

“‘Luxe, calme et volupté’ is the refrain in a work by nineteenth-century French poet Charles Baudelaire  titled “L’Invitation aux Voyage.” Into English that translates as “luxury, peace and exquisite pleasure.” This phrase rang a bell for my wife Laurel and me.

We were among six passengers, three cabin’s-worth, a full house, aboard the  Roi Soleil  barge cruise ,  the Sun King, for six lovely nights in mid-April on the Canal du Midi in Southern France. The  Roi Soleil  is a “river barge” — what it’s actually called, though that does seem a misnomer for a vessel so elegant and luxurious — among a large handful that sail for  Barge Ladies Cruises , mostly in France with a few itineraries in the U.K. and Ireland and Central Europe.

We dined like queens and kings, courtesy of chef Toby, a Brit now based in the French Alps. “That’s the best food I ever ate,” says Laurel, a dedicated foodie and quite a cook herself. We soaked up local history on daily outings led by our tour guide, the knowledgeable and irrepressible Becky, who was invariably attentive to the wishes and needs of all of us…”

  • Canal du Central, Burgundy

Writer Rick Sylvain shares his insights and impressions of his week aboard the 12-passenger Adrienne.

Rick writes:

“Maps say we are in the heart of France, the confluence where the winding Saone River meets the Canal du Centre. But to passengers aboard the luxury hotel barge  Adrienne , we are at the intersection of blissful and soul-stirring.

If you seek an unforgettable week cruising the French countryside, getting immersed in medieval towns, chateaux and estates, wining and dining in ways you never dreamed possible, and tiptoeing through vineyards that produce some of the world’s most prized wines, your barge has come in.

Sailing between Chatillon-sur-Loire and Nemours in the Upper Loire, Adrienne offers France as it was meant to be seen: slow-going and intimate, not the lightning round of the tour buses…”

Grand Victoria

Writer Christina Colon and her husband Peter have traveled extensively all over the world, including quite a bit in France. Both are fluent French, and greatly appreciate the food, wine and culture.

So when they had the opportunity to cruise aboard the elegant 6-passenger Grand Victoria , they took it. The stylish boutique hotel barge was just their speed.

Owner-operators Edward Anderson and Cindy Unvericht and their crew offer a beautiful experience.

Christina describes her first impressions:

“The Grand Victoria feels more like a river yacht than a barge, though it has the typical dimensions and interior of other 5-star canal barges. Built in the 1980s, to the specifications of the heiress to the DeKuyper liquor fortune , it was designed for her private travel around Europe. The current owners redecorated after a gut renovation in 2015.

With amenities in abundance, it boasts a well-stocked bar, deck furniture, chic lounge, and elegant dining area. The eight original staterooms situated near the front of the vessel down a short but narrow half staircase were reduced in number to three. All of them were enhanced in size, allowing for a king-size bed (or two XL twins), double sinks, a full shower and ample storage room. Voila! Three couples can definitely travel in style.

As our cruise began, we settled in and  lapped up our posh surroundings, reclining on the plush outdoor furniture while owner-operator Edward stood at the helm in the wheelhouse…”

Savannah Barge

Cynthia Heininger and Jim Feeney write about the 6-passenger Savannah Barg e , a luxurious hotel barge built in 1936 as a cargo barge specifically for the Canal du Midi to transport liquids (fuel, alcohol and wines, at different stages of its career).

They write:

“In the 1990s, the owner of L’Occitane en Provence renovated the vessel as a showroom for the company’s famed cosmetic line. It was converted to a hotel barge in the early 2000s.

The boat was in poor condition when today’s owner-captain, Adrien Bramoullé, purchased it, but he refurbished it completely in 2014, transforming it into a sophisticated floating hotel with a maximum capacity of seven passengers in three double cabins and one single.

Savannah  normally cruises the Canal du Midi between Bram and La Redorte, or the reverse, on a six-night itinerary. We joined old friends, forming a roster of three couples.

On the first day of our Canal du Midi cruise, in June 2022, Captain Adrien picked us up at our hotel in Narbonne in a comfortable Mercedes SUV…”

Judi Cohen’s first European canal barge cruise won’t be her last. She and her husband spent a week aboard the Anjodi , a canal barge in the European Waterways fleet.

She tell us in her review:

“Considered an off-the-beaten-path destination in the Languedoc region of southern France, the 240km-Canal du Midi was built in the 17th century to connect Toulouse with Sete on the Mediterranean Sea.

Although my husband and I have travelled on small ships around the world, we had never been to this region of France nor on any barges.

Nervous about sharing an 8-passenger barge with other guests we didn’t know (there were seven passengers in total on our cruise), plus a crew of four, we took a deep breath, packed our small suitcases, and set off to France.

This was our first international trip since the start of the pandemic, so it was a relief to find virtually all our travel stress evaporated throughout this slow and intimate 6-night small-ship barge journey.

It was exactly what we needed. We felt comfortable whether we were on the top deck of Anjodi gracefully moving along the Canal du Midi or on shore exploring the surrounding towns and villages.

Slow travel on a quirky barge is the perfect way to experience the lesser-travelled regions of France, far away from the crowds…”

Johanna was writer and world traveler Ben Lyons’ first barge cruise. He sampled the slow and easy 6-night holiday with his mother Jane, and they both enjoyed it. Johanna is run by the husband-wife team of Kris and Patsie and crew.

Ben writes:

“Casting off from the quaint French town of Chateau Thierry, it was immediately apparent our barge trip would be at a different pace — literally and figuratively — from other cruises.

Once up to ‘full speed,’ I scanned the shore to gauge our progress; we were matching the pace of brisk walkers. Onboard with me was only my mother, one other couple, and the Captain and chef.

The hustle of New York City, where I live, had rarely seemed so far away…”

Elysa and her college-age daughter Sam had a fabulous time on Esperance . Their first canal barge cruise suited them perfectly, and they especially appreciated the excellent cuisine, as Elysa’s daughter studied at the Culinary Institute of America and knows food.

Further, they just loved the landscape of southern France, the perfect setting for their foodie and wine barge cruise.

Elysa tell us :

“The Canal du Midi is set in the lovely region of Languedoc in southern France. It’s a step back in time to motor through this idyllic pastoral countryside. You quickly realize why artists are drawn to this area after seeing firsthand the inspiration surrounding you.

From small quaint villages with stone churches and narrow cobblestone streets to vineyards and small farms, this cruise was all about the journey. A slow-moving barge is a perfect vessel — and speed — to make sure you don’t miss a thing…”

L’Impressionniste

  • Burgundy Canal

Scotland-based writer Robin McKelvie spent six nights aboard the barge L’Impressionniste.

Robin describes his canal cruise for us, explaining:

“The lock eases open and we glide through the morning mists under an embrace of giant oak trees. A heron startles off ahead; above a red kite scans for prey. As the emerald forests and hills rise, we retreat inside to a breakfast of freshly baked croissants the cruise manager has just cycled off to a boulangerie for.

And proper coffee. It’s not wine time yet, of course, but that’s a delight to come.

Welcome to the 12-passenger  L’Impressionniste , not just the finest way to discover the joyous  Burgundy Canal , but a real alternative to cruising the more famous Canal du Midi.

The Burgundy Canal sweeps for 150 miles, connecting the River Yonne at Migennes with the River Saone at St-Jean-de-Losne, through a system of 189 locks.

Taxes to build it were first raised as far back as 1607, but construction didn’t begin until over a century later…”

Writer, photographer and video-creator Peter Knego shares his review of another one of the best French barge cruises out there, the 10-pax Athos.

Here’s an excerpt.

“To many, the idea of transport on a barge might seem appropriate for iron ore, grain or some other form of cargo, and of course, that is most often the case.

That noted, savvy QuirkyCruisers also know that some barges have been modified to carry a human contingent on deluxe cruises through scenic and intimate settings.

One of these rarified entities is European Waterways hotel barge Athos , which operates on six-night transits of the eastern part of the Canal du Midi in the South of France.

South Of France Barge Cruising on Athos

The privately owned Athos was converted to carry ten guests in 1982 and is operated by European Waterways. * Photo: Peter Knego

Measuring 98.3 by 16.6 feet, the maximum dimensions to transit the locks of the 150-mile engineering marvel, Athos has five staterooms to accommodate ten guests who are tended to by a crew of five.

She was built in 1964 to transport sand, grain and wine but was transformed into her current configuration in 1982, although she still does convey a good selection of wine for the sole purpose of sating her guests.

Athos is actually owned by a private entity and chartered to European Waterways, who operate a fleet of passenger barges on various canals and waterways of Europe…”

Barge Meanderer — 3/26/24 UPDATE: Barge Meanderer tells me they’re operating in 2024, though the owners have also told me the barge is up for sale and they’re close to closing a deal. We’ll update further when we learn more details.

  • Upper Loire Valley, Burgundy

For writer Dana Freeman’s second barge cruise (the first took her through Southern Burgundy on the Prosperite ), she choose to cruise aboard Barge Meanderer in April, early in the season, which means fewer crowds than the summer months, plus cool pleasant weather and the awakening of spring flora.

Dana’s review for us begins:

“ Owned by Susan and George Kovalik, the Barge Meanderer was built in 1948 as a commercial barge and later converted to a luxury hotel barge in 1992.

At 117 feet long and 17 feet wide, she is currently one of the larger vessels cruising on the French canals.

The Meanderer has room for just six guests. So, unless you charter the boat (which is a great idea for friend and family groups), you should be comfortable spending the weeklong voyage in the close company of a small group of strangers.

We quickly got to know our traveling companions — a group of four women friends in their early to mid-70s from Florida. For them, this barge cruise was part of a girls’ trip that included a few days in Paris.

One of the women was a repeat guest. She had sailed on the Meanderer previously with her husband several years ago…”

Great article; we are looking at doing a barge tour in France and can’t decide between Canal du Midi and Bordeaux or Burgundy….I’m sure they are all nice….

QuirkyCruise

It is hard to choose! I’d say the vibe of canal cruises in France is very similar from one canal to another, it’s intimate and your just inches or feet from the sides of the canal; all three areas you mention are stunning and the day trips would be wonderful, as all of France is dotted with historic villages and vineyards. Let me know which you decide!

David

You also have Provence to cruise on a barge, the company Rhône Croisière with Le Phénicien barge operate for 20 years and Provence is the most visited are in France. There are so many spots to visit, the wheather is always beautiful, historical village, vineyard…..

Thank you, there are many great, options and your suggestion seems appealing too! Here’s a link: https://www.rhone-croisiere.com/en/

How much are tickets to see the alan parsons project on tour in 2024.

Alan Parsons smiles while sitting onstage.

If you paid particularly close attention to The Beatles’ “Get Back” documentary, it’s possible you may have noticed Alan Parsons in the background working as a “tea boy” aka a tape operator.

This fall, the 75-year-old tape operator turned rock star will be front and center.

From October through December, The Alan Parsons Project have gigs lined up at theaters, arts centers, casinos and music fairs all over North America as part of their ongoing ‘Reset and Power Back On Tour.’

That includes shows at Englewood, NJ’s Bergen Performing Arts Center on Thursday, Nov. 14, Westbury, NY’s Westbury Music Fair on Sunday, Nov. 17 and New Brunswick, NJ’s State Theatre on Wednesday, Nov. 20.

At all concerts, fans can expect “a distinctive mix of almost Floydian prog-rock and sensitive ballads” according to a glowing review from The Independent .

If this sounds like the sonically adventurous show for you, tickets are available for all eight upcoming shows.

Based on our findings, seats start anywhere from $47 to $109 before fees on Vivid Seats depending on the show.

For more information, our team has everything you need to know and more about Alan Parsons’ 2024 ‘Reset and Power Back On Tour’ below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation and found at the time of publication.

The Alan Parsons Project tour schedule 2024

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to the cheapest tickets available can be found here:

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and, if it isn’t noted, will include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

Still curious about Vivid Seats? You can find an article from their team about why the company is legit here .

The Alan Parsons Project set list

Huge groups on tour in 2024

A number of prog and prog-adjacent acts that helped define the sound of the ’70s and ’80s are still strutting their stuff live nearly a half century later.

Why you should trust ‘Post Wanted’ by the New York Post

This article was written by Matt Levy , New York Post live events reporter. Levy stays up-to-date on all the latest tour announcements from your favorite musical artists and comedians, as well as Broadway openings, sporting events and more live shows – and finds great ticket prices online. Since he started his tenure at the Post in 2022, Levy has reviewed a Bruce Springsteen concert and interviewed Melissa Villaseñor of SNL fame, to name a few.
