Short ireland self-driving tours that are closer to dublin, 1. drive county kildare.

County Kildare is Dublin's closest neighbor. Plan a one day Kildare itinerary for a fun day out. Go shopping at Ireland's top outlet mall or visit the Irish National Stud farm.

They don't call Kildare Ireland's horse country for nothing! Extend this short Irish road trip from one day to a weekend and venture into South Kildare . Here you'll find tales of Antarctic adventure in Athy which Ernest Shackleton once called home.

Stay in the historic and posh Kilkea Castle , one of the coolest castles in Ireland . Explore the various manor homes and gardens in South Kildare and you may even come face to face with a smiling donkey!

2. Waterford and Wexford

Whatever the season, a Waterford and Wexford road trip in Ireland's Ancient East has something special to offer. Wexford is known for having the best strawberries in Ireland so time your Waterford and Wexford road trip for the summer season.

Dungarvan is a great home base for exploring County Waterford. If you happen to do this Ireland self-drive tour in winter instead, make sure to plan a stop at the Wexford Wildfowl Reserve to see Greenland White-Fronted Geese as they overwinter in Ireland.

You'll find traces of beloved American President JFK all around Waterford and Wexford. The JFK Arboretum is a great place to stop and stretch your legs with a short hike.

This Ireland road trip is easily doable in a weekend, but there is plenty to do if you'd like to take a longer or more leisurely Irish road trip in this area.

3. Dublin to Tipperary

Dublin to Tipperary is another fantastic short self-driving tour that can easily be accomplished in a weekend. Make a beeline for the bad-ass Rock of Cashel with detours to discover all the things to do in Kilkenny City and Carlow along the way.

4. Carlingford Lough

Head North from Dublin for an ideal long weekend drive that covers both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Carlingford Lough is the dividing line between the North and South.

Book in at Ghan House Hotel . From here it takes less than 10 minutes to walk into Carlingford Town with its spectacular colorful pubs and picturesque King John's Castle jutting out into Carlingford Lough.

Take Carlingford Lough Ferry into Northern Ireland and enjoy views of the Cooley Mountains and Cooley Peninsula from the Mourne Coastal Drive. Discover quaint little towns in Northern Ireland like Rostrevor where echos of C.S. Lewis' Narnia can be felt everywhere.

This Ireland road trip is ideal if you prefer a more relaxed pace and don't want to be in the car every day. Once you arrive in Carlingford Town, you could cycle to Omeath or take a long hike into the Cooley Mountains.

The Ultimate Self-Drive 10-Day Tour of Ireland

Itinerary — Your Ultimate 10-Day Self-drive Tour of Ireland

The-Ultimate-Tour-of-Ireland-Unique-Experiences-Off-the-Beaten-Path

Day 1: Dublin - Belfast

Total driving distance & time: 180 km – 2 hours 10 minutes, excluding stops

Turn on your Paddy the Pocket Pilot App and get on the road! Your ultimate self-drive tour of Ireland starts with an adventure to Newgrange, a magical Stone Age passage tomb decorated in megalithic art.

After exploring this incredible Neolithic structure, you will travel north to Belfast. Here, you can immerse yourself in the Titanic Experience at the interactive visitor centre of Titanic Belfast.

The wonderful and tragic stories told about the most famous ship in the world, and its doomed fate, is a moving experience.

Finish the day with a fantastic black cab tour of Belfast. Your cab will even pick you up from your hotel! (Optional)

The evening is yours to explore Belfast’s thriving pubs, restaurants, and shops. Get a great night’s sleep at your carefully handpicked accommodation.

Day 2: Giant’s Causeway - Derry

Total driving distance & time: 165 km – 2 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

The second day features one of this tour’s most-anticipated stops — Giant’s Causeway.

But the entire Causeway Coastal Route is just as breathtaking and a joy to drive.

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge is another highlight. Feel everything from fear to exhilaration as you cross the open ocean with air beneath your feet!

The Paddy App will also guide you to some secret locations off the beaten track.

Your next stop on day two is Derry. Northern Ireland’s second-largest city is steeped in rich and fascinating history.

Enjoy exploring the city at night because you will take a tour of the walled city on day three.

We recommend treating yourself to a gourmet and craft beer experience at the Walled City Brewery.

Day 3: Derry - The Hills of Donegal

Total driving distance & time: 110 km – 1 hour 50 minutes, excluding stops

Start the day with a walking tour of Derry led by a local guide. This experience will help you understand our past struggles and the long road to peaceful times in the North.

It’s time to leave Derry and head into the wild northwest. The Hills of Donegal are waiting!

Embark on a memorable drive that takes in the Glengesh Pass and the Assaranca Waterfall.

Paddy the Pocket Pilot will direct you to Grianan of Aileach, a 5th-century stone fort, where you can take in some truly stunning views.

Head to your accommodation in the picturesque village of Ardara, County Donegal, and treat yourself to a night of seafood and “craic” (fun) with the locals.

Day 4: Donegal - Connemara

Total driving distance & time: 260 km – 4 hours, excluding stops

Today’s road trip has the double joy of passing through Sligo – William Butler Yeats’ County – and making a short trip to Westport – Ireland’s favourite town!

Your time in Westport starts with a charming walking tour of the town followed by a fabulous lunch.

This will fuel you for a delightful journey through Connemara National Park and along part of the famous Famine Trail.

You will then visit Kylemore Abbey, a stunning 1,000-acre estate overlooking Kylemore Lake. Enjoy strolling around the abbey and soaking up the beauty of the Victorian Walled Garden.

Your journey continues to Clifden where you will find great bars, restaurants, and nightly music. Don’t be afraid of striking up a conversation with the locals over a tasty pint of the Black Stuff!

If you’ve ever had dreams of becoming a Prince(ss), now’s your chance! We have added the option of staying in Abbeyglen Castle!

Day 5: The Aran Islands

Total driving distance & time: 100 km – 1 hour 40 minutes, excluding stops

The morning starts with the short drive to Rossaveal Pier overlooking Galway Bay. Feel the excitement build as you board the ferry to the Aran Islands.

When you land on rugged Inishmore, the largest of the three Aran Islands, it’s time to explore! If you’d like, you can either cycle or make a special request for a jaunting cart (horse and carriage) against an additional charge.

Your route will take you toward Dún Aonghasa, an ancient, clifftop stone fort standing 100m over the ocean.

It’s then time to circle back toward the ferry and the mainland. On your way, you may pick up a word or two in “Gaelic” from the locals. And why not treat yourself to an authentic Aran Sweater?

When you arrive back at Rossaveal, your Galway adventure begins. Hug the coastline all the way into this bustling, bohemian city.

This much-celebrated place is home to entertaining street performers, an infectious atmosphere, and plenty of craic.

You won’t need your Paddy App to find entertainment this evening! It’s Friday night every night in Galway!

Day 6: Galway - Cliffs of Moher

Total driving distance & time: 90 km – 1 hour 45 minutes, excluding stops

Medieval history is at the very heart of Galway. Discover more about this side of the city on a tour led by our local guide.

Head down the narrow streets where you can duck in and out of brightly coloured shops. This is the perfect time to try on Galway Shawls and Claddagh Rings!

Pass under the famous Spanish Arch and enjoy the ambience of Claddagh, a delightful fishing village.

Sadly, you’ll have to leave Galway, but the day has more treats in store!

Travelling southwest, it’s time to visit the otherworldly Burren National Park and the jaw-dropping Cliffs of Moher.

On this adventure, you will visit Corcomroe Abbey, a 13th-century Cistercian Monastery as well as the 16th-century Dunguaire Castle in Kinvara.

At the Cliffs of Moher, you will walk over this awe-inspiring natural feature as the powerful waves of the Atlantic Ocean crash into it below.

The cliffs are one of the most iconic sights, and most spectacular natural features, in Ireland. We’re almost certain you’ll be lost for words.

Our itinerary will also send you off the beaten path, so you can enjoy some of the area’s hidden gems.

You’ll spend the evening in Doolin – the hometown of traditional Irish music.

Day 7: Doolin - Dingle

Total driving distance & time: 240 km – 3 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

A trip to Ireland is not complete without seeing its incredible ancient structures. Today, you drive to the most famous Dolmen (AKA portal tombs) at Poulnabrone.

Dolmen are Neolithic monuments scattered throughout the country marking burial sites and passageways dating back to 3000BC.

After being awed by the Dolmen, it’s time to make the short trip to the farmers at Caherconnell who will treat you to a spectacular sheep-dog trial.

Prepare to be mesmerised by the farmer and his furry friend as they work in tandem to gather up their flock of sheep.

It’s then time to leave the west behind as you cross the border into County Kerry by ferry. Your next destination is the celebrated harbour town of Dingle.

The evening is yours to soak up the atmosphere in Dingle’s fantastic restaurants and famous quirky pubs.

Why not sit in Foxy John’s hardware store, order yourself a drink, and strike up a conversation with a friendly local?

Day 8: The Dingle Peninsula

Total driving distance & time: 50 km – 2 hours 30 minutes, at a leisurely pace!

Your morning starts on the water exploring caves and inlets on Dingle Bay by kayak. You may even meet County Kerry’s biggest celebrity – Fungie the Dolphin.

If kayaking isn’t your thing, don’t worry. You can take a moderate-paced hike up Mount Brandon instead. This walk offers the reward of 360-degree panoramic views of Dingle Bay and Castlegregory.

Or perhaps you just want to stroll around this colourful town teeming with charming cafes and original local craft shops? Take it at your own pace. It’s your holiday – Do it your way.

In the afternoon, jump in your car and take a delightful trip along one of Ireland’s most scenic roads – The Slea Head Drive.

You spend a second night in the buzzing town of Dingle – relax and enjoy.

Day 9: The Ring of Kerry - Kinsale

Total driving distance & time: 200 km – 3 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

After saying a fond farewell to Dingle, you will journey towards the Ring of Kerry – one of Ireland’s most famous driving routes.

The first stop takes you to Killarney, considered by many as the Ring of Kerry’s starting point.

The Ring of Kerry is the very definition of the word “scenic”. You will discover famous sights and hidden gems along the way, including Moll’s Gap, Torc Waterfall, and Ross Castle.

We will arrange a guided tour of Ross Castle for you. Here, you will learn what life was really like behind those imposing stone walls.

The beautiful heritage town of Kenmare is the perfect place to stop for lunch and some shopping.

This is your last night on tour, so we’re sending you to the coastal town of Kinsale. This picturesque place is famed for its culinary culture, delivered by many award-winning restaurants.

Kinsale also has a great tradition of poetry, silver, gold, and glassware manufacturing. You can see this in the local shops and galleries which proudly have work by talented local artists.

Day 10: Cork - Kiss the Blarney Stone

Total driving distance & time: 320 km – 3 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

Wake up refreshed and ready for a guided walking tour through Kinsale’s narrow streets. Your tour is led by one of our favourite guides – Barry!

Paddy the Pocket Pilot will then direct you towards Blarney because you MUST NOT leave Cork without visiting Blarney Castle and Gardens.

This is the home of the Blarney Stone. If you want the gift of the gab, you need to give it a big fat kiss!

Your final stop before driving back to Dublin is the Rock of Cashel. This historically significant site is over 1000 years old!

Marvel at its medieval round tower, cathedral, chapel, and castle. This is a truly fantastic way to end your trip.

It is now time to turn off your engine and dry your tears. Sit back and soak up everything you have experienced over the last 10 days.

If you have any time left before leaving the Emerald Isle, we will give you plenty of amazing tips and recommendations for things to do, eat, and entertain you in Dublin’s fair city.

Tour itinerary

Day 1 - dublin to galway.

best self guided tours of ireland

Just north of Dublin, you will find Ireland's most visited attraction, the megalithic tombs in Newgrange . One of the great wonders of the ancient world, Newgrange is older than Stonehenge, Mycenae or even the Pyramids of Egypt. The magnificent entrance slab - 'one of the most famous stones in the entire repertory of megalithic art' - is especially satisfying, the confidently executed spiral and lozenge motifs still crisply defined after 5,000 years. Also close by is the Hill of Tara, said to be the seat of the ancient high Kings of Ireland and of course Trim Castle, the setting for the Mel Gibson movie ‘Braveheart’. A slight detour at Moate just before the town of Athlone will bring you to the Ancient Monastic Settlement of Clonmacnoise.

An early Christian site founded by Saint Ciaran in the 6 th century on the banks of the River Shannon, the site includes the ruins of a cathedral, eight churches (10 th -13 th century), two round towers, three high crosses and large collection of early Christian grave slabs.  On to Galway, the ‘City of the Tribes’, also known as Ireland’s Cultural and festival capital. With its street entertainers and traditional pubs with great music, Galway and in particular, the Quays area of the city centre will enthrall you particularly in the evening time. Other sites in Galway include Ireland’s largest medieval parish church, the Collegiate Church of St Nicholas of Myra dating back to 1320 . Christopher Columbus reputedly worshipped in this church in 1477. Also nearby are Galway Cathedral , the Spanish Arch and Eyre Square .

Day 2 - Galway and the Connemara Region

best self guided tours of ireland

The hauntingly beautiful Connemara Region awaits you. Just west of Galway, situated on the most western seaboard of Europe, this unspoilt region boasts breathtaking scenery. The characteristic features of Connemara include its rugged, unpolluted coastline, dramatic mountains, numerous lakes and rivers and woodlands and the renowned Connemara National Park. Visit Kylemore Abbey and the Lough Inagh Valley as well as the spectacular Sky Road near the town of Clifden. You can also visit the fishing village of Roundstone and see how a ‘Bodhran’ (traditional Irish Drum) is made. Alternatively, you may prefer to take the ferry to the Aran Islands. Aran will take you back to an Ireland of Celts and Early Christians. Take a pony and trap, or a guided tour from the pier up the island to the stone fort of Dun Aengus. Dún Aengus is located on top of a 300ft high sea cliff and is one of the finest prehistoric monuments in Western Europe. This evening, back to the Quays area of the city for some of the best traditional entertainment in the country.

Day 3 - Galway to Killarney

best self guided tours of ireland

A long but dramatic days touring will bring you from Galway along the west coast of Ireland to Killarney. Travel through the karst moon like landscape of the Burren through the village of Doolin which is world-famous for its traditional Irish music to one of Ireland’s best-known tourist attractions, the Cliffs of Moher, one of Ireland's top Visitor attractions and are a designated UNESCO Geo Park. From the Cliffs the Aran Islands can be seen as well as the Twelve Pins and Maum Turk Mountains.  After soaking up the views travel onward to Bunratty Castle, built in 1425, this grandiose castle was renovated in 1954 to its prior medieval splendour. Within the grounds of the Castle Bunratty Folk Park you will find 19th century Irish life recreated. As you journey to Killarney we recommend that you stop in the quaint town of Adare. Adare is regarded by many a seasoned traveller as Ireland’s prettiest village with its charming thatched cottages, manicured public park and ancient church. From Adare, the town of Killarney is approximately one more hour by car. You will arrive in plenty of time to enjoy the great pubs and enjoy the traditional Irish music on offer.

Day 4 - The Ring of Kerry and Muckross House

best self guided tours of ireland

There are numerous day trips to be had while based in Killarney. The two most scenic drives in the area include the Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula Driving routes, two of Ireland’s most picturesque drives. The Ring of Kerry includes visits to colourful villages, ancient heritage sites dotted around the peninsula including Skellig Michael just off the Kerry coast and Staigue Fort. The Dingle Peninsula has more interesting antiquities, historic sites and varied mountain scenery than any other part of Ireland. The main town Dingle is the most westerly in Europe and attracts large numbers of visitors each year, many of whom come to learn the Irish language in the surrounding Irish speaking district. Also in the area are An Dún Beag Promontory Fort from 800 BC as well as the Blasket Islands and Gallarus Oratory. Gallarus Oratory was built between the seventh and eighth century and is the best preserved early Christian church in Ireland. On to Brandon Creek from where legend has it that St. Brendan discovered the North American continent in the 6th century. Alternative routes include day trips to Blarney Castle and the Titanic Train in Cork or the northern route to the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren region of County Clare including Bunratty Castle. If you wish to stay closer to Killarney, take a wonderful walk or pony and trap through the Gap of Dunloe, returning to Killarney by boat across the Lakes of Killarney.

Day 5 - Killarney to Kilkenny

best self guided tours of ireland

Though the journey from Killarney to Kilkenny is a relatively long one, there are plenty of attractions to visit en-route to make the journey seem shorter.  First of these would be Cahir Castle, one of Ireland’s largest and best-preserved castles it was once an important stronghold of the powerful Butler family. Very close to Cahir Castle you will find the Rock of Cashel which was once the seat of the Kings of Munster and capital of this southern province.  For those who wish to explore a somewhat longer route to Kilkenny, Blarney Castle awaits. Here you will find the famous Blarney Stone which when kissed is said to grant the skill of eloquence. Often referred to as Ireland’s Medieval Capital; Kilkenny’s origins date back more than 1,500 years. This small city is full of captivating, historical buildings and Kilkenny Castle is a 12th century castle remodelled in Victorian times and set in extensive parklands. Built on the site of an earlier church, most of the work that produced this beautiful Gothic building was carried out in the 13th Century. Also in Kilkenny is Saint Canice's Cathedral, the second longest of Ireland's medieval cathedrals.

Day 6 - Kilkenny to Dublin

best self guided tours of ireland

This journey will take just under 2 hours. If you wish to make a side trip on route to the capital, a visit to the National Stud & Japanese Gardens just outside Kildare Town would be an option.  The Japanese Gardens are situated in the grounds of the Stud Farm and were created between 1906 and 1910. The National Stud comprises three separate attractions. The 1,000 acre Farm at Tully has been in use as a Stud Farm since 1900 when it was owned by Col. William Hall-Walker. It is home to some of Ireland's finest thoroughbreds. There's a Horse Museum tracing the history of the horse in Ireland using artifacts, illustrations and text and the skeleton of the legendary steeplechaser 'Arkle'. In fact the winner of the 2003 Californian ‘Breeders Cup Mile’ race is a National Stud horse, the 3rd in the last 9 years. . The quandary that you will be faced with when you reach Dublin is, not what you should see but that you should leave out. Knee-deep in history and with its own unique sense of humour and wit, Dublin is an invigorating city. Take the opportunity to visit some of Ireland’s most history laden locations, including Trinity College and the Book of Kells, Dublin Castle, Kilmainham Gaol, The National History Museum and not forgetting The Guinness Brewery, St. Patrick’s Cathedral & why not finish up the day in Dublin’s Temple Bar section and enjoy the wonderful pubs and music it is famous for.

Best Self-Guided Walking Tour of Dublin (With Map)

Best Self-Guided Walking Tour of Dublin (With Map)

If you’re after a self-guided walking tour of Dublin that packs a punch, you’ve landed in the right spot.

I’ve lived in Ireland’s capital for 34 years and I’m very confident you’ll love the mini-itinerary that I’ve outlined below.

It includes a one and two day option and it takes in the main things to do in Dublin , unique sights that tourists tend to miss and some historical pubs, too.

Our free Dublin walking tour follows a clear, logical route to ensure that you make the most of your time here. Dive on in!

Table of Contents

Day 1 of our self-guided walking tour of Dublin

The Dublin walking tour map above will give you an overview of where our route will take you over each day.

As you can see, each day has a clear route and packs in a mix of key attractions and places you hopefully won’t have heard of.

If you want a guided tour, you’ll find organised Dublin walking tours with excellent reviews right here (affiliate link).

Money saving tip: If you’re planning on visit some of the main fee-paying attractions in the city, the Dublin Pass can save you €50+

1. Molly Malone Statue

Molly Malone

Photos via Shutterstock

Day 1 of our self-guided walking tour of Dublin kicks-off at the now-iconic Molly Malone Statue on Suffolk Street in the heart of the city.

The bronze statue shows Molly, a famous character from the Irish song ‘Molly Malone’, who sold ‘Cockles and Mussels’ on the streets of the capital.

The statue was erected in 1988 and it has moved a handful of times. You won’t spend long here, but it’s a nice starting point for your stroll!

2. Trinity College

Trinity College

Our second stop of the day is a handy 2-minute walk from the first! Trinity College is one of the most famous landmarks in Ireland .

It is a renowned educational institution and it was established in 1592. It’s also inside the grounds of Trinity that you’ll find the ancient Book of Kells .

Trinity is the oldest university in Ireland and you can take a ramble through its impressive grounds, admire its magnificent architecture and tour the wonderful Long Room Library .

It’s in the Long Room that you’ll find 200,000+ of the college’s oldest books. It’s worth booking the skip-the-line ticket here as it gets busy ( this ticket gets you access to Trinity and Dublin Castle).

3. The Palace Bar

The Palace Bar

Photos via The Palace on FB

The next stop on our self-guided walking tour of Dublin is going to be a brief one (I’m not suggesting you go drinking at this stage of the day!).

While there are many old pubs in Dublin , few are as visually impressive as the Palace Bar, which you’ll find a 3-minute walk from Trinity.

This pub was built in 1823 and it stands today, many years later, as a Victorian shrine, of sorts. Admire its impressive interior, first, and then saunter inside for a nosey (you can return here later).

It’s located just inside the cobbled streets of Temple Bar , so you can have a nosey around this area, if you like.

4. O’Connell Bridge

O'Connell St.

When you’re ready, take the 3-minute walk to O’Connell Bridge, which spans the murky waters of Dublin’s River Liffey.

O’Connell Bridge replaced Gandon’s Carlisle Bridge, which opened in 1794. The bridge that stands to this day opened back in 1880 and cost £70,000 to build.

It measures at 148 ft in length and 160 ft in width. Named after political leader Daniel ‘The Liberator’ O’Connell it boasts impressive features, like its impressive lanterns.

5. The General Post Office

GPO

Walk up the historic O’Connell Street (be careful – there are plenty of dodgy characters that hang around here) and head straight from the The General Post Office (GPO) – it’s around a 4-minute walk from the last stop.

The GPO was built during the early 19th century and it’s here that you’ll see some of the more impressive architecture in Dublin , courtesy of the buildings neoclassical design.

This building played a key part in Irish history during the Easter Rising of 1916 when it served as the rebel headquarters. You can take a tour here that’ll immerse you in the city’s past.

6. The Spire

The Spire

One of the more unique places you’ll visit on this walking tour of Dublin is the Spire – it’s less than 1-minute walk from the GPO… you can’t miss it.

Also known as ‘the Monument of Light’ (along with many other colourful nicknames…), the Spire stands 394 feet tall and it was erected in 2003.

I’ll be honest – the Spire is impressive when viewed from afar, but there’s no real point of seeing it up close.

7. The Ha’penny Bridge

Ha’penny Bridge

The next stop on our self-guided walking tour of Dublin is a 7-minute walk from the Spire and it’s arguably one of the most beautiful bridges in Europe!

The Ha’penny Bridge , officially known as the Liffey Bridge, is an iconic pedestrian bridge that spans the River Liffey that was built in 1816.

It’s name comes from the fact that you once had to pay a toll to cross the bridge. The cost was a Ha’penny and there were turnstiles at either end of the bridge.

The bridge is a little slice of ‘old-Dublin’ that still used heavily to this day. It’s believed that around 27,000 people cross it each day.

8. St. Michan’s Church

Michan’s Dublin

Photos with thanks to Jennifer Boyer

You won’t find our next stop, St. Michan’s Church , on many Dublin walking tours, however, it’s  well-worth  a visit.

It’s a 12-minute walk from the Ha’penny Bridge and it’s here that you’ll find a historic building that dates back to the 11th century.

Oh, you’ll also find crypts with mummies… yes, mummies. In fact, some of the mummies at St. Michan’s are thought to be over 400 years old.

If you’re looking for unique things to see in the capital, make sure to add this one to your self-guided walking tour of Dublin.

9. The Brazen Head

Brazen Head

We’re off Dublin’s oldest pub, next – The Brazen Head (a 4-minute walk from St. Michan’s).

The present building that you see today dates back to 1754, local legend claims that the site has housed a tavern since 1198.

And though no documents exist to prove that, we know that there’s been a licensed alehouse here since the mid 17th-century at least (which is old enough!).

If you’re feeling peckish, this is a handy lunch-spot. It’s well worth visiting either way as this place is steeped in history .

10. Christ Church Cathedral

tipping in dublin

One of the most popular stops on this self-guided walking tour of Dublin is the stunning Christ Church Cathedral , a 6-minute walk from The Brazen Head.

Christ Church Cathedral was founded in the early 11th century under the Viking king Sitruic Silkenbeard (amazingly, that is his real name!).

Originally built as a wooden structure in 1030 with the help of an Irish priest, it was rebuilt in stone in 1172.

The current Gothic-style cathedral, with its striking architecture and impressive interior, has been standing since the 12th century.

11. Dublin Castle

Dublin Castle

Few castles in Ireland receive visitor numbers like our next stop. Dublin Castle is a 4-minute walk away and it’s here you’ll find an impressive structure that dates back over 800 years.

Originally developed as a medieval fortress under the orders of King John of England, work on Dublin Castle was started by Meiler Fitzhenry in 1204 when the city was under Norman rule following the invasion of 1169.

Constructed on elevated ground once occupied by an earlier Viking settlement, it was completed in 1230 and took on the look of a classic Norman courtyard design.

One of the most prominent parts of the castle today, the imposing Record Tower is the only surviving tower of the original Medieval fortifications.

While its rectangular battlements on the roof are actually a 19th-century addition, they look pretty convincing!

12. St. Patrick’s Cathedral

St Patrick’s Cathedral

Another firm favourite on this self-guided walking tour of Dublin is located a 12-minute walk from the castle.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral is a historic religious landmark that was founded in 1191. It’s the largest church in Ireland and it boasts Gothic architecture.

When you arrive here, take some time to saunter around the part and admire the cathedral’s exterior, before heading inside to get an eyeful of its outstanding interior.

13. The Guinness Storehouse

Guinness Storehouse

Photos © Diageo via Ireland’s Content Pool

Few Dublin walking tours can resist rounding off a day of strolling at The Guinness Storehouse , which is a 17-minute walk from St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Book your tickets in advance (self-guided or guided) and immerse yourself in the story of the most famous of the many Irish beers .

The building itself is part of the Guinness Brewery and it acts as a seven-story visitor centre that takes visitors through the history of Guinness along with how it’s made and more.

The tour finishes on the rooftop in the impressive Gravity Bar that overlooks Dublin City and beyond.

Day 2 of our self-guided walking tour of Dublin

walking tours of dublin

1. St. Stephen’s Green

Stephen's Green

We’re going to kick-start day two of our self-guided walking tour of Dublin at St. Stephen’s Green , which is often referred to as the ‘Lungs of Dublin’.

You’ll find the nine hectare/22-acre park at the top of busy Grafton Street when it’s home to commemorative sculptures, extensive trees and a large pond.

It has a pretty  wild  history that few are familiar with (read more here ) and it’s a nice, calm spot to kick-start the day!

2. Leinster House

The second stop of the day takes us 4 minutes down the road to Leinster House – the epicenter of Irish politics.

This is an impressive Georgian building that dates back to the 18th century. Now, while you can take a guided tour, if you like, you’re arguably best off admiring Leinster House from afar.

Unless you’re interested in politics, that is – in that case head on in for a journey back through Ireland’s political past.

3. National Gallery of Ireland

National Gallery Dublin

Photo left: Cathy Wheatley. Others: James Fennell (Tourism Ireland)

The National Gallery of Ireland is a 5-minute walk from Leinster House and it’s here you’ll find one of the most popular museums in Dublin .

It’s also one of the best free things to do in Dublin when it’s raining! For visiting art enthusiasts, the National Gallery of Ireland is an absolute must.

This cultural treasure trove houses a vast collection of paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts spanning various periods, from the Renaissance to the present.

Ireland’s artistic heritage can go overlooked by tourists and locals alike – this is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in it.

4. Merrion Square

Merrion Square

Located in Dublin’s charming Georgian quarter, Merrion Square is a delightful mix of greenery and history (and it’s only 5 minutes from our last stop).

The square boasts finely manicured gardens that feel a far-cry from the busy city streets that lay just minutes away.

If you head for a stroll through its grounds, you’ll stumble upon impressive sculptures (including one of Oscar Wilde).

5. Irish Whiskey Museum

Irish Whiskey Museum

Photos by Brian Morrison via Failte Ireland

If you’re taking this self-guided walking tour of Dublin and it’s raining, our next stop will provide some welcome respite from the elements!

You’ll find the Irish Whiskey Museum a handy 15-minute stroll from Merrion Square and it’s here that you’ll discover the story behind the coveted Irish Whiskey .

I’ve done this tour in recent years and it offers a good mix (terrible pub intended…) of sippin’ and storytellin’.

You’ll get an insight into the history of whiskey and how it’s made and there’s also a tasting at the end.

6. Mulligan’s

Mulligan’s

© Tourism Ireland

Many Dublin walking tours take you to the busy pubs in Temple Bar . However, if you want to dodge the tourist traps, take the 6-minute walk from the Whiskey Museum to Mulligan’s.

You’ll find it on Poolbeg Street where it’s loved by locals and tourists alike for its old-worlde charm.

The pub received its license in 1782 but it operated as a Shebeen (a place where drink was sold illegally) for many years before.

The biggest compliment that I can give Mulligan’s is that walking through its doors makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

Expect a lovely, traditional interior, a fine pint of Guinness and a furnishings that have stood the test of time.

7. The Custom House

Custom House

The next stop on our self-guided walking tour of Dublin is the magnificent Custom House, a 4-minute walk from Mulligan’s.

This is an architectural marvel on Dublin’s waterfront and it was designed by James Gandon in the late 18th century.

The Custom House is famous for its neoclassical facade which is best admired from afar, first, before up close.

The building is now home to the Department of Housing.

8. The Famine Memorial

Famine Memorial

Dublin’s Famine Memorial is a poignant tribute to one of Ireland’s darkest chapters in history.

Located on Custom House Quay, a 4-minute walk from the Custom House, these haunting sculptures depict the devastating impact of the Great Famine in the 19th century.

The memorial serves as a solemn reminder of the suffering endured by the Irish people during that time and stands as a testament to the resilience and spirit of those who lived through the tragedy.

EPIC Museum

Photo left: Eileen Coffey. Others: Ros Kavanagh (via Fáilte Ireland)

The next stop on our self-guided walking tour of Dublin is a handy 2-minute walk from The Famine Memorial.

EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum explores the profound impact that Irish emigrants have had across the world.

The museum is housed inside a vaulted space and stories are told via interactive exhibitions and striking displays.

You’ll need to pay into this one but it’s well-worth it (especially if it’s raining!).

10. The Jeanie Johnston

The Jeanie Johnston

Photo left: Gareth McCormack. Others: Dylan Vaughan (via Failte Ireland)

Many Dublin walking tours omit the brilliant Jeanie Johnston Famine Ship which sits a 2-minute walk from the EPIC Museum.

The Jeanie Johnston is an impressive replica of the original ship that transported Irish emigrants to North America during the Great Famine.

The ship is a floating museum that offers an insight into the challenges faced by those Irish men and women that sought a better life across the pond.

You can take a guided tour here where you’ll be immersed in a story that shaped the very DNA of Ireland.

Irish Highlights (Summer, 7 Days)

Thoroughly enjoyed the trip but would have been better if other countries were included in the history instead of catering only to the USA. Australia and New Zealand have a huge history of immigrants from Ireland and our population, roots and culture are very Irish. Would have been nice to hear about that instead of all about the USA

The Celtic Voyage - Multi-Day - Small Group Tour of Ireland Tour

The Celtic Voyage - Multi-Day - Small Group Tour of Ireland

The tour was exactly as expected and I was never disappointed. The accommodations were excellent with great Irish breakfasts. As much as the sites we visited were interesting and dramatic, the guide made them all the more so with his deep knowledge of Irish history and lore. It is impossible to overstate the difference Mike, the guide, made with his humor, personality and knowledge of what he was showing us. I would never hesitate to follow this company and Mike wherever they decide to travel. Giver yourself a treat and go with Wild and Happy.

10 Day Wild Irish Experience - Small Group Tour Tour

10 Day Wild Irish Experience - Small Group Tour

Our 10 day Irish Experience Tour was fantastic. We really appreciated the service and extra care our guide/driver Lee gave us throughout the tour. We had a group of 16 people and 2 were on the 7 day itinerary the rest were 10 days. We loved the group dinners that Lee organized for us to get to know the other guests. Lee always made the agenda clear and got us to the places we needed to be on time. His driving was very safe and he was able to tell us about the Irish people and scenery while getting us to the beautiful views and attractions. The accommodations were clean and the breakfast were delicious. Lee always gave us recommendations on restaurants and pubs in each town we stayed. Each town was unique and I was glad we were able to stay in several of them for 2 nights. Lee adjusted the times to maximize the good weather and for the group to get the best experience. I highly recommend the 10 day Irish Experience tour with Lee!

8 Day Castles & Coast Experience - Small Group Tour Tour

8 Day Castles & Coast Experience - Small Group Tour

The smart tour itinerary hits many of the Wild Atlantic Way highlights, but driver guides make the experience. A special shout out to Anthony Dawson for his informed commentary, savvy ability to get us to key locations before the hordes of other tours, scrupulous attention to safety, great music playlists, and naturalist knowledge of birds, flora, and fauna. Patience and a great sense of humour round out the experience perfectly. (Our only damper on the overall week was a very uncomfortable bed in Dingle at one of the hotels.)

What a fantastic vacation! The tour itself was perfectly paced and the combination of little details such as the flourishes and time with local experts and the grand finale stay at Ashford Castle made this an unforgettable experience. Ann was an amazing tour director - organized, professional and always willing to go above and beyond - and our coach driver Michael was a pleasant, jovial fellow that exemplified perfectly the friendly spirit of the Irish people. Booking self-guided travel with Macs Adventure offers you flexibility, ease, and adventure.

We might be biased, but self-guided travel is one of the best ways to experience the world. It’s active travel, led by you. It’s all the best bits of adventuring on your own plus support from a professional team that handles all of your logistics and knows all the local secrets.

If you’ve never tried a self-guided hiking or self-guided biking trip, here’s what you need to know about how it works, and who it’s best for.

How Does Self-guided Travel Work?

On a guided trip, you’d join a group for a set itinerary, led by someone else who sets your departure times, detours, lunch breaks, and pace. On a self-guided walking or cycling tour, however, we’ll plan your adventure and then you’ll take the lead for a self-paced, individualized journey.

We handle all the logistics, from booking unique, hand-picked accommodations with inns, bed & breakfasts, or hotels to transferring your luggage between them, so you only need a daypack for hiking or biking. Our app has maps with detailed information about points of interest between your start and end points each day, so you won’t miss any of the scenic or historic detours that elevate your experience.

All you have to do is select which trip you’d like to go on, and we’ll handle the rest.

Why Choose Self-guided?

The biggest benefits of booking self-directed adventure are:

A unique, tried-and-tested journey that’s completely your own

Choice and flexibility to travel at your own pace

Expert recommendations

We’ve been planning self-guided hiking and biking tours for decades, and we’ve developed hand-crafted adventures in places we know well. Our app offers local insights and accurate, easy navigation for each route, and our network of partners is tried and true. We know many of the best places to stay along every trail we serve, and most of these places are small, family-owned businesses that don’t work with online booking platforms. That means we can save you hours—if not days—of research by booking all your accommodations for you, which gives you more time to train for your trip and enjoy when you get there.

We’re also doing our best to help you travel more responsibly. We prioritize working with local businesses that operate with the environment in mind. You can check out our inaugural impact report  as we pursue B Corp certification.

Many of our partners have been hosting Macs adventurers for years, which helps us ensure you have a quality stay with hosts who understand the small details of what an active traveler needs. You’ll generally find it easy to arrange a packed lunch, for example, and we make sure your stay comes with a hearty breakfast to fuel your day on the trail.

If something doesn’t quite go to plan, you’ve got someone looking out for you on the ground. Our partners know to call us if you haven’t checked in by a certain time, so we’ll be proactively looking out for you — great peace of mind. And if you ever need us, we’re just a phone call away.

Who Should Do Self-guided Travel?

Self-guided travel is great for almost everyone. At Macs, we serve walkers, hikers, and bikers who are active and independent travelers. Here are a few types of people especially well-suited to our trips:

  • Couples who love hiking or biking: Traveling in a pair with a partner or friend is the most economical way to book. You can book a room with one bed, a room with two beds, or separate rooms entirely. Whether you’re looking to hike , bike , or take a self-led road trip, we’ll handle all the logistics for both of you so you can focus on prepping for the adventure.
  • Small groups: If you’re traveling with a few friends or family members, having help with booking and planning can go a long way. With a self-guided tour booked by Macs, you can outsource all the decision-making to us, and each individual or couple can book and pay separately so that one person doesn’t have to carry all the deposits for hotels.
  • Solo travelers : Whether you’re a seasoned pro or traveling alone for the first time, booking through Macs gives you peace of mind that you’ll be staying in comfortable, safe places, and that someone is looking out for you. If you don’t arrive at your accommodation by the expected time, our partners will contact us so we can make sure you’re alright.

What Type of Self-Guided Trips Can I Do?

At Macs, we focus on walking, hiking, and biking from town to town, self-drive road trips to hike in gorgeous places, and rail and hike trips so you can cover more ground on public transportation.

Our trip types include:

Classic Routes : From Ireland’s Dingle Way to the Mountains & Lakes of Slovenia’s Julian Alps , our classic routes highlight some of the world’s most beloved journeys.

Slower Adventures : Our Slower Adventures maximize your time to explore. You’ll enjoy shorter distances each day, so you have more free time to visit museums, vineyards, cafes, or even learn how to make cheese in a Swiss Alpine village.

Pilgrimages : Across the world, pilgrimages are often rooted in ancient tradition, and offer incredible opportunities for growth, relaxation, and meeting other travelers. These trips are some of our longest, ranging from a few days to nearly two months. Our routes include the ever-popular Camino de Santiago  in Spain and the lesser-known (and underrated) Via Francigena , which winds through Europe from France to the Swiss Alps to Rome.

In-Style : If you’re looking for something truly special, In-Style trips are built to impress. We’ve scouted the most stylish boutique hotels , Italian agriturismos , French chateaux , grand English estates , eco beach retreats, and other unique accommodations across the world. These trips may include extras such as dinner at a Michelin-star restaurant.

Discovery : Our Discovery trips give you freedom to cover more ground with easy to moderate walking, such as taking two weeks to drive the entire coast of Iceland . You can choose between Drive & Hike , Rail & Hike tours , or Self Drive road trips , all of which come with suggestions for gorgeous trails, scenic detours, and personal recommendations for how to spend your days. And of course, we’ll handle all your accommodations.
