As far as materials go, this travel changing pad is made from PEVA material that is Oeko-Tex certified. While I wouldn’t say this is totally non-toxic, it is a cleaner option that offers a lot of functionality. If you do buy this item, I would probably recommend laying a swaddle blanket underneath your baby, just in case.

But otherwise, it does look like a good and cleaner option for on-the-go diaper changes! I would totally get this for the convenience factor alone + the fact that it’s Oeko-Tex certified doesn’t hurt.

Most newborns get through an average of 10-12 nappies a day, so you can certainly expect nappy changes to be a major part of your daily routine with a new baby.

While you may have a changing table or comfortable ‘wedge style’ changing mat at home, changing your baby while out and about can be a little more unpredictable. Taking a travel changing mat with you on your travels can ensure simple and stress-free nappy changes, even in the absence of adequate baby changing facilities.

What is a travel changing mat?

Travel changing mats are small and lightweight changing mats that can be folded up into a compact carry-along package and can easily be stashed inside your changing bag or in the basket of your pushchair . Changing mats are a convenient option for day trips with your baby without needing the bulk or weight of a full-sized option.

Travel changing mats are also a hygienic option for changing your baby at service stations, airports or simply when visiting friends and family where you don’t have your changing mat to hand. They are generally made from wipe-down fabrics which are quick and easy to clean and some have built-in storage too, providing a small amount of space for your essentials such as nappies and wipes.

What to look for in a travel changing mat?

Here are some things to consider when choosing the right travel changing mat for you.

• Material: What is it made from? Whilst cotton can be soft and gentle against your baby’s skin, wipe-down fabrics are far easier to keep clean, with the ability to simply wipe down after use. Some changing mats are relatively thin, whilst others are padded or cushioned and may even include a small support pillow for additional comfort. Whilst comfort for your baby is important, the thinner fabrics are often more lightweight and tend to fold down more flat - handy if you’re particularly limited on space.
• Size: How big is the travel changing mat? Is there plenty of space for your baby and/or toddler to lie down? Does the changing mat fold or wrap to a smaller compact size for packing in your bag or suitcase? Does it have a carry handle or strap for portability?
• Storage: Does the travel changing mat include any storage? If you’re hoping to leave your full changing bag at home, it can be helpful if the travel mat offers the capacity to store at least a couple of nappies and wipes. Some have elasticated pockets, some have zipped areas and others even have integrated wipe dispensers - all of which can make a practical and convenient choice.

What should I look for in a changing mat?

Where can I put it? – Some mats aren’t suitable for use on a raised surface such as a dresser or nappy changing table. Check the product descriptions before you buy.

Is it the right size? – As a general rule, spacious changing mats are better because they’ll allow for growing room. However, for days out and holidays, you are more likely to want a compact, foldable changing mat that will fit into a bag or under your buggy. If you’re planning to placing your mat on a changing table or dresser, check the measurements to ensure it fits.

How do I clean it? – When a product is doing a messy, dirty job, it’s essential that it can be cleaned easily and frequently. Many mats can be wiped cleaned with a disinfectant spray or wipe. Fabric changing mats are more likely to absorb leaks and should be machine washable to ensure that they can be properly cleaned between uses. If you choose a fabric changing mat, you may need to consider purchasing two so that you always have one at your disposal while the other is in the wash.

Can it be transported easily? – If you are in the market for a travel changing mat, you’re likely to want a compact, lightweight foldable style. Is a changing mat necessary?

A changing mat isn’t necessary and the NHS advises that you can use a changing mat or a towel for nappy changes. However, whilst a towel may be comfortable for your baby, it is likely to absorb leaks and spills and will need machine washing between uses. For that reason, a wipe-clean, waterproof padded changing mat is likely to make your life easier in the early weeks and months of your baby’s life as well as reducing your washing pile and keeping other surfaces in your home - such as your carpets, if you tend to change your baby on the floor as the NHS advises is the safest way.

Are PVC changing mats safe?

Polyvinyl chloride – or PVC - contains chemical additives including phthalates, lead, cadmium, and/or organotins, which can be harmful to health in high doses, look for changing mats which are labelled as being made from non-toxic PVC or eco-friendly vinyl, free from phthalates and other toxins.

A changing pad is simply a soft, safe place to lay your baby while you change their diaper or clothes. We researched reviews from customers and competitors and examined the features of dozens of changing pads on the market, considering attributes like design, ease of cleaning, material, and safety when making our picks.

We consulted with Nkeiruka Orajiaka, MBBS, a board-certified pediatrician, on how to use a changing pad safely and what to look for in this item.

Factors to Consider in a Changing Pad

• Design: A diaper-changing pad should provide comfort and safety for the little one who will spend a lot of time on it. Look for changing pads with features like a three-sided or contoured design to prevent them from rolling off, with additional cushioning to keep babies comfortable and protect their heads. Moreover, the changing pad should fit in the space you're looking at, such as a changing table dresser.
• Waterproof Material: It’s essential to make sure the changing pad has waterproof or an easily wipeable material because, with babies, anything (messy) can happen. Some changing pads come with a waterproof cover, or the pad itself wipes off. Make sure liquid can't leak into the pad, which could cause mildew or mold. Whether the changing pad or the cover is waterproof, double-check the manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning. “Changing areas are huge breeding areas for both viruses and bacteria. Urine and feces are considered dirty, and if not cleaned off a surface, [they] can serve as a focus for most of these bugs to continue to grow,” explains Dr. Orajiaka. “When you place a baby on an unclean surface continuously, they may not only put their skin at risk of rash or irritation, but babies also touch all surfaces they are placed on and put their hands in the mouth. This can put them at risk of also getting sick from these bugs.”
• Safety Straps: Safety straps help keep your baby in place (since you do only have two hands). Many changing pads come with adjustable straps and a buckle so you can adjust to the proper size. Some changing pads also feature anchoring straps to attach them to a table or dresser, ensuring additional safety while changing your baby. Dr. Orajiaka recommends this option if possible. “Always buckle the straps while changing a baby, but don’t depend on this alone to keep your baby safe," she says. "Stay with your baby at all times while changing and avoid distractions. When you are done changing, remove your baby from the table first and to a safer location before removing your dirty diapers or clothing.”

Is it worth it to buy an expensive changing pad?

Until your little one becomes potty trained, they will need their diaper changed upwards of 3,500 times. So investing in a changing pad that saves you time (a pad that is easy to clean) and money (one secure enough to lay on top of any surface, meaning you can forgo buying a dedicated changing table), could be a good idea. What’s more, investing in a changing pad that stands the test of time means that you have the option of using it for more than one child.

However, there are plenty of safe, comfortable and easy to clean changing pads that are also affordable, so don't feel any pressure to spend more than you want to.

How many changing pads do I need to buy?

Having an extra or two might make life easier, but one changing pad is all you really need. If you live in a two-story house, having one changing pad upstairs and one downstairs will be more convenient than having to navigate the stairs every time you need to change the baby. Having a separate, portable changing pad that you keep in your diaper bag is also a worthwhile investment for on-the-go diaper changes.

Do changing pads come in a standard size?

Changing pads differ in dimensions, with the average size being approximately 17.5 x 27.5 inches. If you have a particular spot that you are planning to keep and use your changing pad, measure the space before you buy it to ensure that it fits. If you are using your changing pad on a changing table, dresser or another elevated position and is too big, it poses a safety risk. However, you may want to ensure that your changing pad is large enough to see you through to toddlerhood.

What to look for in a changing mat?

Is it the right size? – If you're planning to put your mat on a changing table or dresser, check the measurements to make sure it will fit. In general, larger mats are better as they'll grow with your baby, but for travel and days out you might want a more compact design.

Good Housekeeping Institute Chief Technologist Rachel Rothman , an engineer and mom of three, loves that it's wide enough for your baby while still fitting most changing table designs.

This pad is covered in water-resistant vinyl. We do find that the stitching makes it tough to wipe clean; we recommend using a fabric changing pad cover with it (it fits standard-size covers), then throwing the cover in the wash when it gets soiled. Buying fabric covers drives up your overall cost and adds to your laundry, but on the plus side, you can pick designs that'll look cute in your nursery.

If you appreciate saving every dollar, this lightweight option is your best bargain for a pad that is standard dimensions for both changing-pad covers and changing tables. At 4 inches, its contoured sides are even a little taller than those on our best overall pick.

While the vinyl outer covering can be zipped off, we don't advise it because it can be tough to get it back on — and the cover is not very durable, so messing with it may cause an accidental tear. It's best to just wipe the exterior clean if it gets soiled (though that may be tricky due to the stitching). We recommend using a standard-size fabric changing pad cover on this one, so the washable cover can absorb most of the mess.

Some online reviewers worry that the foam might feel cold to their baby and so they lay a blanket on top of it. The babies can't tell us one way or another, and the foam does not feel cold to our touch, but there's no harm in using a blanket — just be aware you put yourself back in laundry-land.

In fact, other brand's changing pad covers don't fit this very well because the pad is also an inch longer than standard size , at 33 inches.

If you suspect you'll have a long baby, this pad will likely fit more comfortably for a longer period of time. Parents also feel this is an extra-cushiony choice. A downside is that it's one of the more expensive options on our list.

Our testers noted that the contoured foam surface is comfy and soft , and it wipes clean without retaining odors. When you are placing a changing pad on a piece of furniture and want to be reassured that it'll stay put, we like that Munchkin's pad has four rubber safety strips on the bottom . They aren't failsafe, so you shouldn't feel like you can walk away when your baby is lying on this, but it doesn't slide around like some other changing pads can.

We like that Munchkin sells waterproof changing pad liners that are more affordable and faster to pull on and off than regular changing pad covers. But the cotton cover it comes with is also wipeable and some online reviewers say that's their favorite feature. Others warn that the cotton can stain and it's best to use this with a pad on top. We suggest using it with the liners to be better safe than sorry.

If you change up where you do diaper duty — sometimes in the nursery and other times in the living room, for instance — the Eva Baby pad is lightweight and portable so it's easy to move around with you. It's of the molded-foam variety, so it wipes clean and you don't need to use a changing pad cover with it. It's also the least expensive foam changing pad on our list.

We do wish the contoured sides were a little higher. Since they're the lowest on our list, we feel most comfortable recommending you use this changing pad on the floor.

Our Good Housekeeping Institute parenting experts have looked at more than 20 diaper changing pads in the past 10 years. We look at products in our Lab in New York City and also send them to consumer testers in homes nationwide. For changing pads meant for use on a changing table, we only consider ones with a safety belt and contoured sides. Overall, we assess whether they're easy to use, simple to clean, durable and whether a baby comfortably fits on it.

Safety standards: Any changing pad we consider must meet the federal safety standards . The ASTM standards clarify requirements on the stability, materials, warning labels, instructions and more for your baby products. These requirements help eliminate safety hazards regarding the materials, straps and structural integrity of each product. Before purchasing, check if the product states it is ASTM-certified.

What to look for when shopping for the best diaper changing pad

Before you hit "add to cart," here are a few things to keep in mind when looking for the right diaper changing pad for your needs:

✔️ Material: The modern hard-foam diaper changing pads and those with a water-resistant cotton cover can all be wiped clean and do not need an additional fabric cover. But wipeable changing pads are more expensive to buy. Traditional-style changing pads with plastic wrapped around a foam core are cheaper and many parents use them with a fabric cover that can be laundered. There are thousands of different changing pad covers from brands such as Pottery Barn , Aden and Anais and Carter's in many different fabrics and ranging in price from about $15 to $50 each. Target now also makes a Circo wipeable changing pad cover for $17.

Some parents refer to the foam variety of changing pads as "silicone," but to our knowledge, there are no actual silicone changing pads.

✔️ Comfort: Having a supportive changing pad will make changes more comfortable for your child. We still recommend thinner portable or disposable changing mats when traveling or in a pinch, just not for everyday changes.

✔️ Stability: Opt for a changing pad that has a safety belt and contoured sides to help keep your baby from rolling around, and use the belt every time. A non-skid bottom is also great for keeping the changing pad from sliding around on whatever surface it's placed on. We find many of the molded-foam changing pads to be somewhat naturally grippy.

✔️ Size: Most changing pads are roughly 32 inches long and 16 inches wide, but there are some small variations. If you're using a changing table or a changing-table tray on top of a dresser, it can be worth it to measure the space you have to work with to be sure the changing pad you're buying will fit.

✔️ Water resistance and cleaning: We get that you want to avoid plastics and such for your baby, but changing pads get pee and poo on them, so they're made of tough stuff. Traditional changing pads are made with a waterproof outer layer so the interior core stays pristine, and additionally you can wrap it in a changing pad cover that you can launder. Hard-shell changing pads are made to be wiped clean with a damp cloth.

Diaper-changing station safety

First, some lessons learned from the experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute. Give some thought to your changing table. Restoring an old dresser or reusing an adult piece of furniture with a flat top might seem like a good idea, but we recommend using a product specifically designed for diaper-changing that meets the industry safety standards.

You can look for brands that are on the Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association list of certified changing tables , meaning it's been validated by a reputable third party. This probably goes without saying but we want to say it anyway: Changing pads are not safe for your baby's sleep. If they fall asleep during a diaper change, transfer your baby to their crib or bassinet.

• Don't trust yourself alone to prevent falls; use the safety belt on the changing pad and use a pad with contoured sides if your baby is up on a dresser or changing table.

• That said: Always keep a hand on your baby . Never leave a child unattended on a dressing table, even for a moment, and even if they are strapped.

Is a changing pad necessary?

Strictly speaking, no. You can (and likely sometimes will) change your baby's diaper while they lie on a blanket or towel on the floor. Then you just have to do some extra laundry, because boy babies especially tend to pee during a diaper change.

If you have your baby up on a changing table, you need a changing pad with contoured sides and straps to hold your wriggly baby in place. Even if you don't use a changing table and opt to change diapers on the floor , a good changing pad can lessen the stress of life with a newborn, primarily because they are made of materials that can be frequently cleaned . They're also cushioned so your baby is more comfortable and less likely to bang their head on the floor.

You can also throw the liner in the wash, and replace it between kids or if it gets a little worn out. The liner is made from organic cotton and feels well made, but is quite thin. 3. Shnuggle Squishy Changing Mat: The best easy-to-clean changing mat

This foam changing mat claims to be warm to touch, so more comfortable for your baby. While it’s definitely not as cold during a night-time change, it also feels very plasticy. But that does mean it’s easy to keep clean. There are no little folds or seams that are tricky to wipe clean here, so no matter what befalls you during a nappy change, you’ll be able to wipe it up without fuss.

We liked that it’s slightly raised for babies who don’t like to lie completely flat (thanks, colic and reflux!). This might make for a less screamy nappy change.

So it scores points for hygiene and ease of use, but the shiny grey plastic feels quite institutional.

4. Mama Shack Anti-Roll Baby Changing Mat: The best anti-roll mat

We were impressed with the quality of this anti-roll mat. Other anti-roll mats we’ve tried have torn quite easily, which makes them unhygienic. However, the cover on this one feels durable. It’s also removable, so you can change it when necessary.

We went for the banana leaf design on our change mat, but Mama Shack offers a plethora of different prints for their mats. The colours on the print are vibrant and don’t seem to fade despite cleaning. We also liked the subtle texture of the cover on this mat – it didn’t feel like we had to peel our baby off it after a change, and they didn’t protest that it was cold on their backs.

High sloping sides prevent rolling, but you should never leave a baby unattended on a changing table.

5. Mamas and Papas Dream Upon a Cloud Luxury Changing Mattress: The best changing mat for comfort

Adorable with a capital A, this changing mat has a cute smiley cloud pillow. And, yep, it’s pretty plush all round.

We liked the removable towelling mat, as it offered absorbency when spills happened. You can chuck this in the wash – the only downside is there isn’t a spare mat, so you have to use a muslin or towel if the mat is in the wash. Under the mat is a fabric cover, that’s also removable. This meant our baby never got cold on the mat, even when they were fresh out of the bath.

While the pillow is cute, it’s probably most practical for older babies during a change. However, it is lovely for a bit of tummy time. We found this a charming change mat (not a sentence we thought we’d ever write) and liked the functionality of it, too.

The 5 best airlines that make flying with babies and kids a whole lot easier

S eeing new things, having new experiences, visiting relatives, jumping from freezing temperatures to sunny beaches in an afternoon … There are plenty of great reasons to fly with kids. But for anyone who says "getting there is half the fun," I'm guessing they haven't been to an airport with a toddler.  

Even as a professional travel writer and mom of "big" kids, I still stress about finding seats together, getting delayed, and having something to eat on the flight. That's why knowing what airlines are truly family-friendly, and, let's face it, just friendly in general, is important. 

At the very least, you want an airline that's going to guarantee your 4-year-old isn't sitting with strangers while you're stuck in a middle seat in the back of the plane. In the best-case scenario, though, there are a host of airlines that go out of their way to make flying comfortable and actually fun – not just for the littlest members of your traveling party, but for the grownups, too. 

"Pretty much any airline is able to accommodate families," says David Slotnick , the senior aviation business reporter at The Points Guy and dad to a 1-year-old son. "Most of them will let you preboard, if you ask, so that you can have time to stow your bags and get everyone settled into your seats, and most will let you gate-check a stroller, so that you can pick it back up as soon as you step off of the plane." But, he cautions, there are things that some do better than others, like free checked bags and guaranteed seat assignments, that really make a difference when flying with kids.

How we chose the best airlines for families

As a travel writer with more than 20 years of experience, I've circled the world and reported on everything from Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World to safari lodges in Africa. I've flown with my son both alone and with my husband hundreds of times to dozens of locations (last stop, Spain, next stop, Japan). And I can tell you we've had great experiences – the whole family upgraded to lay-flat business class seats returning home from London on United – and terrible flights – Air France canceling our flight home from Paris and rescheduling us 18 hours later. And I've learned some valuable lessons along the way.

In addition to this personal experience, I utilized the BabyCenter Community to see what airlines have come through for families flying with their little ones in tow and spoke to nearly a dozen travel-savvy parents who among them have logged more miles in the sky than many travel professionals. From these conversations, I was able to learn what parents prioritize when looking for an airline. 

Based on this combined research, all of the airlines below:

Offer pre-boarding for families with young children so you're not fighting to cram your bags into an overhead bin while simultaneously installing a car seat. 

Ensure families sit together – to say this is a hot-button topic would be an understatement; the Department of Transportation (DOT) even created an  Airline Family Seating Dashboard  to track airline policies. 

Offer a range of amenities – including the ability to warm up bottles and borrow baby gear, like strollers, in the airport.  

For additional insight into flying with babies and kids , I spoke to the following family travel experts:

Alexis Bowen, co-founder of Elsewhere by Lonely Planet, a travel site connecting local experts and travelers, and a mom to a baby girl.

Best domestic airline for amenities: JetBlue

As far as general carriers in the United States go, JetBlue comes out on top for several reasons. First, there's the variety of free in-flight entertainment options to keep the kids entertained, including free WiFi, live TV, and movies at every seat, not to mention copious free snack options that include cookies, chips, and an addictive snack mix. Plus, JetBlue has the largest legroom in coach, which helps with everything from letting kids stretch to giving you room to  maneuver your car seat into place.

JetBlue also guarantees families sit together no matter how much you paid for your tickets, which is (almost) priceless. All of its planes have changing tables — a win for when you need to change a diaper mid-flight . Finally, families who know how to work their points will appreciate how easy it is to pool and redeem rewards.

Heads up: JetBlue recently raised their domestic checked bag fees: Your first checked bag will now cost $35 if you commit online more than 24 hours in advance, and $45 within less than 24 hours' notice. (International baggage is free.) JetBlue does not charge to check your car seat.

Parents say: "JetBlue let my husband board early with our seat harness, diaper bag, and carry-ons so he could get our row set up before I walked my toddler on board with our regular boarding group. This was game-changing since I could give my 2-year-old a final diaper change before the long flight without missing our chance to get our things onto the plane before everyone else."

Best domestic airline for on-time performance: delta.

Many parents I spoke to raved about Delta's service, so it wasn't a surprise that Delta was the top-rated domestic airline on Bounce's 2023 Airline Index . Delta had the highest percentage of on-time arrivals (82%), one of the lowest cancellation rates at 2%, and also the lowest level of passenger complaints at just 2.66 per 100 customers. (For comparison, Frontier had 10 times that number of complaints.). 

Delta was also named the Most Reliable Airline in the U.S. by AirAdvisor . In other words, if you want to get your family to your destination without delays, Delta is your airline. 

Another top-selling point that many parents shared with me was Delta's peanut allergen policy. With advance notice, Delta will refrain from serving peanuts on your flight .

Heads up: There are limited snack options on short domestic flights. 

Parents say: "Delta is hands down our favorite airline to fly as a family … My daughter's first flight was around a year old, and I was flying solo with her. The flight attendants brought her special kids' snacks, the pilot gave her Delta wings, and they truly went above and beyond to help me get her to the changing station in the bathroom, clean up snacks, you name it … [Delta is] just generally a very family-positive airline. They allow families to board first if desired. They easily check any luggage or strollers at the gate — and we've never had an item go missing or be delayed in any way! We've [now] gone on 10-plus flights with our 4-year-old, and the times we've experienced delays (weather-related only), we were kept informed and felt like we were in really good hands." 

Best budget airline:  Southwest

First, let's start with the transparent pricing on Southwest, which usually beats other major carriers on the same route. There's no laundry list of extras, in large part because checked bags – two per person – are completely free. That means you can check your suitcase instead of dragging a carry-on, a stroller, your child, a car seat, and luggage onto a plane. 

And while Southwest isn't included in the DOT list of airlines that guarantee family seating, they do have some safety nets in place to work with their unique no-pre-assigned-seating policy. You can, of course, pay to be in the early bird group to board the plane first. However, if you have kids under 6, take advantage of the family boarding , which happens after the A group and before the B group, meaning you'll be among the first people on the plane and can usually choose seats together. 

Heads up: If your child is older than 6, but under 14, Southwest promises it will "reasonably endeavor to seat a child next to one accompanying passenger." If you want your entire family to sit together and you have a larger party, you might want to pay for early boarding.

Parents say: "I like the boarding process, and I like that they have family boarding up until age 6. It's so nice to have the extra time to get to the seats. And we usually install the extra airplane seat belts, so we like having the extra time for that too."

Best european airline: lufthansa.

Europe's biggest carrier ranks high for its comfortable seats and extensive in-flight entertainment system. The airline keeps the comfort going for families with special check-in areas in Frankfurt and Munich and the extensive Kinderland play area in Munich. 

With the thought that well-fed kids are happy kids, Lufthansa offers in-air children's menus taste-tested by a panel of junior chefs. Expect dishes like "pretzel face," "tortoise muffins," "Lu's favorite lasagna," and "sausage mummies." Meals for babies – such as baby food, mini sausages, and soups – are also available on board Lufthansa flights.  

Heads up: Lufthansa mostly flies to European destinations, so you can't really use them to travel around North America.

Parents say: "Lufthansa made it very easy to travel with kids. We boarded early and settled quickly. They offer children's meals ([which you] must request in advance) that are served prior to main cabin meals. This gave me time to both attend to them and also allow me to eat my meal in peace. An overall wonderful experience." 

Best international airline: Emirates

For kids, flying Emirates is a little bit like attending a  birthday party in the sky: There are goodie bags, stuffed animals, toys, and even special snacks. If you're flying with a baby , you'll receive a kit with a reusable changing mat, diaper cream, cleansing wipes, a bib, a plush toy that attaches to the seatback, and a special collectible blanket. Bigger kids get fanny packs and backpacks filled with games and activities. 

Kids' meals include favorites like pasta and chicken tenders served on special colorful trays, and there are snack boxes filled with cookies and fruit snacks for mid-flight munchies. Emirates even has special kid-sized headphones to watch the collection of Disney movies and other in-flight entertainment. 

Parents will be happy to know that families always board first, and at the Dubai hub, there's a special family check-in desk as well as complimentary strollers to navigate the airport. 

Heads up: Emirates doesn't operate domestic flights, so you can only use this option for international travel , and the airline is often one of the priciest options when comparing fares, although you do get what you pay for.

Parents say: " I chose to fly Emirates through Dubai as I knew their economy class section was roomier and more comfortable than most airlines and that their entertainment system would keep my son engaged throughout much of the long flight. The service on board and at the Dubai lounge were excellent – truly helpful to this single mom!"

Factors to consider when choosing an airline for your family

If you're deciding between a few different carriers for a trip, keep the following in mind to help you make your choice.

Price. Let's face it, paying for a family to fly is pricey. So finding an airline with well-priced seats, as well as perks, is definitely important. 

On-time performance. You do not want any delays, if you can help it, when traveling with kids. (I say this as a mom who was stuck for 11 hours in Newark Airport with a 6-year-old waiting for a replacement plane on an airline that only had one scheduled flight per day out of New Jersey). While weather can't be helped, choosing an airline with a noted performance record can get you off the ground sooner. 

Kid-friendliness. Does the airline have kids' meals? How about entertainment? Do they offer any additional toys or perks for little ones to make the trip more memorable?

Seating policies for babies. Are there lap infant policies that let you hold your baby under 2 for free? And do they offer bassinets for infants? "When flying long-haul, booking a bassinet is a lifesaver," Bowen says. "Prioritize airlines where bassinets can be booked in advance, as this will drastically change your experience."

Checked bags. "One thing I always keep in mind is the cost of checking bags," says Slotnick. "I used to travel with carry-on only, but with car seats, clothes, diaper bags, strollers, and more, that's much harder these days. So I try to stick with airlines that, for me, have the best checked bag options."

Traveling with Babies: How to Fly With A Pack and Play

Whether this is your first time flying with a baby or your tenth, preparing for air travel with your kids is a lot of work and can be stressful. The packing, prep, and travel time can be overwhelming for first-time and experienced parents! From the first time a baby comes home, you need somewhere for them to sleep safely, and as they get older, a spot for them to play without getting into trouble. If you plan on traveling, you will still need these things, which can be particularly difficult when the place you visit isn't exactly baby-proof. A pack n play is a play space, a bassinet, and a diaper changing station, making it the perfect solution. Whether driving or flying, you can fold them up and tuck them away in an easy-to- carry case for travel.

CAN YOU GATE CHECK A PACK-N-PLAY?

When traveling with my three young kids, I purchased small suitcases adorned with their favorite Disney characters, with wheels and a handle for my toddlers. You can also buy a solid color and use fabric markers to decorate and make it unique, so they’ll want to pull it. I bought mine from Amazon for $20, but you can sometimes find them used or even borrow from a friend. The toddler suitcases contained small toys, coloring books, storybooks, and a tablet to help keep the kids entertained during the flight. To make things even easier on everyone, all three kids’ clothes were in one checked bag equals less luggage to wait for after the flight. 

I held my infant in a wrap-style baby carrier to allow for hands-free, ensure that the baby was always near, and help keep the baby calm through the noisy space. The long piece of stretchy fabric was easily adjustable to different body types, which made it great for traveling, especially when visiting family. 

When traveling by airplane, some parents rent baby equipment at their destination. Whether a stroller, crib, car seat, high chair, or pack-n-play, these rentals get pricey - upwards of $25 a day per item. If you plan a little, you can bring your own gear and minimize what you carry through the airport! I always brought a stroller as it provided transportation for kids that get tired, a place to put the small suitcases, a bag of snacks we purchased before the ride, and the diaper bag. At your gate, check in at the desk to receive a tag for gate-checking a stroller. Your stroller will be waiting for you when you land at your destination.

WellSense : As a WellSense NH MassHealth ACO or MCO member, you may qualify for additional benefits. Car seats play an important part in keeping children safe while riding in a vehicle. Each child member between 5-65 lbs. can receive an infant seat once per lifetime, and children between the ages of 4-8 years old are eligible for a booster seat to replace the infant seat, once requested. Pregnant mothers can request a car seat 45 days prior to their due date. 9 am – Visit the Red Square

The first thing that every tourist should do by default is visit the very heart of Moscow – it’s main and most beautiful (which ‘krasnaya’ actually meant in Old Russian) square! 

There are several ways to explore it:

• Take a selfie with Spasskaya Tower
• Have a warm drink at the Christmas market (which lasts until mid-January)
• Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum
• Shop in the gorgeous adjacent GUM department store
• Visit St. Basil’s Cathedral (and learn that it’s actually several churches under one roof).           

11 am – It’s Kremlin time! 

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Entering the Kremlin is, actually, a bit of a quest, as it’s a presidential facility with no general access. You need to buy a ticket or, better still, book a guided tour. Inside the Kremlin’s walls, you will find ancient cathedrals, in which Russian tsars used to be crowned and buried, as well as explore the magnificent architecture of the Kremlin that reflects the rich history of the country. And, finally, you could also make a quick visit to the Moscow Kremlin Museums and admire artifacts from various Russian tsarist eras: carriages, thrones, crowns and the most incredible armory and jewelry.

2 pm – Watch the changing of the Guard

A very spectacular (and free) thing to do is watch how the honor guard does their ceremonial change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame, situated in Alexander Garden, right next to the Kremlin wall. Every hour, from 8 am to 8 pm, the 1st Company of the Kremlin (Presidential) Regiment performs this rather old and beautiful tradition. But, be warned, it's often overcrowded. 

3 pm – Enjoy a green oasis just in the center

Florarium in Zaryadye

Just a few steps from the Red Square, you will find the fabulous Zaryadye park. Opened in 2017, it is designed by renowned American architect bureau ‘Diller Scofidio + Renfro’. You can walk among the very cozy botanical decorations and explore Russia’s climate zones, as each of them is represented in dedicated areas, complete with flora from those zones.

The park also has an underground museum, an “ice cave” and a 3D cinema, where you can take part in a virtual adventure – a flight over Moscow! However, the piece de resistance is a floating boomerang bridge over the Moskva River, one of the best places to take a selfie.

You can also grab a quick lunch or relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the park.

7 pm – Arrange a ballet night

The Bolshoi Theater

Of course, the most fancy way to finish your day in Moscow would be to go to the ballet at the Bolshoi Theater (in a perfect world, to see ‘The Nutcracker’!). However, getting tickets to the Bolshoi is not an easy task and should be done well in advance of your visit. 

But, don’t be upset if you don’t manage to get tickets to the Bolshoi. Moscow has dozens of other options to see a ballet (or opera). No less brilliant performances can be seen in the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater or in The State Kremlin Palace (by the way, this is another way to get a quick glimpse inside the Kremlin!).

10:30 pm – Have a late dinner in a fancy restaurant

There are not so many other cities with such a big choice of restaurants in a range of tastes and styles. In 2021, the authoritative Michelin guide announced their pick of the best of Moscow’s restaurants. And here’s our guide to all the places with Russian cuisine for any budget. But, if you happen to be in the area of the Bolshoi or Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater, then ‘Dr. Zhivago’ would definitely be a nice option (and it’s open around the clock).

DAY 2 

9 am – grab a moscow coffee.

Moscow is definitely a coffee city! You can find coffee shops on every corner and they all offer a huge range of drinks. Try a ‘raf’ coffee, a sweet, creamy drink that was created in Russia, or dare to pick one of the very unusual offers, like cheese coffee or a Soviet candy style one (check out our coffee guide here ).

10 am – Take a river cruise

Another exciting way to explore Moscow is to observe it from the water. Boats cruise along the Moskva River all year round. Most begin their route from the Hotel Ukraine, one of Stalin's ‘Seven Sister’ skyscrapers, and will bring you back to the same spot after passing the medieval Novodevichy Convent, Moscow State University and Luzhniki Stadium, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and giant monument to Peter the Great and many other sightseeings. 

It’s always at optimum temperature inside the boat, which also has huge panoramic windows. Select boats also offer a full dining experience, so it is also a nice place to have breakfast or lunch.

1 pm – Visit ‘Russia’ Expo and taste a bunch of Russian regional cuisines

Until April 2024, the Soviet-era VDNKh exhibition park is hosting the huge ‘Russia’ expo, with tons of activities and expositions devoted to Russia, its culture, science and nature. Check out our special guide on what to do there!  

An entire ‘House of Russian Cuisine’ has been opened at the expo. You will find 15 food stands with flagship dishes from Kamchatka, Siberia, Karelia and other regions of Russia. Imagine trying a range of cuisines and dishes in one place without even having to travel anywhere, be it Altai pelmeni, Tula kalach or Caucasian pies! A perfect place to grab some lunch.

The VDNKh exhibition park is a great place to visit, in general! Its pavilions are the perfect example of Stalinit Empire style architecture and you can almost feel as if you’ve traveled back in time! You will also find several interesting museums in the park – devoted to space exploration, Russian history and even a ‘Special Purpose Garage’, which showcases the various vehicles used by the country’s leaders.

And, finally, you can ride Europe's tallest panoramic wheel – ‘Sun of Moscow’ – that will give you panoramic views of the city – from a height of 140 meters!

5 pm – Ice skate with view & mulled wine

Ice skating is one of the most popular and affordable activities in Moscow. There are several great ice skating rinks in picturesque locations that are open all winter long. One of the biggest rinks in Europe is also at the aforementioned VDNKh or you can visit the one in Gorky Park, another very popular Moscow spot, or the small, but fancy rink – right on Red Square! 

All the parks offer ice skate rental, so the only things you need are warm clothes, a charged phone to record your memories and a good mood!  Moscow also gets dark at 4:30 pm in winter and hundreds of lights are switched on, turning the city into a giant fairy tale!

And, if you are not a sports person, we’ve picked several other unusual activities that you could do in Moscow instead. For example, did you know that there is an entire district of dacha (countryside) houses, just 10 minutes from the center, surrounded by giant new highrises? How about taking a stroll there and feeling the early Soviet atmosphere?

8 pm – Warm up & laugh out loud

After all these outdoor activities, what could be better than a warm cozy bar with a hot drink and nice company? Moscow is a city full of entertainment for all tastes. So, if you know the Russian language or want to practice it, go to a theater or catch a stand-up comedy show. Moscow even has comedy shows in English, where you can hear both Russians speaking fluent English or foreigners (including Brits and Americans) who live in Russia speaking in broken or heavily-accented Russian (Check their show dates on the ‘ Moscow English Comedy ’ Telegram channel)!

11 pm – Finish by partying the night away!

Moscow never sleeps, as you might have heard. Which means there are plenty of bars and nightclubs where you can have a drink (or two or three; be sure to check out how Russians make Black Russian and White Russian cocktails) and chat with incredibly different people. Have fun and don’t miss your flight (or miss it and stay longer in the best city in the world!)!
