“I miss being on stage and the closeness of U2’s audience,” said Bono. “In these shows I’ve got some stories to sing, and some songs to tell… Plus I want to have some fun presenting my ME-moir, SURRENDER, which is really more of a WE-moir if I think of all the people who helped me get from there to here.”

On November 1, Bono will release his memoir titled   SURRENDER: 40 Songs, One Story ,  the story of the remarkable life he’s lived, the challenges he’s faced, and the friends and family who have shaped and sustained him. The subtitle, ’40 Songs, One Story,’ refers to the book’s 40 chapters, each named after a U2 song. Bono has also created 40 original drawings which will be featured throughout the book. In his unique voice, Bono takes readers from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism dedicated to the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty. Time Is Up For Clock on 'The Masked Singer'

Trending on billboard.

“I miss being on stage and the closeness of U2’s audience,” Bono comments in a statement. “In these shows I’ve got some stories to sing, and some songs to tell… Plus I want to have some fun presenting my ME-moir, Surrender, which is really more of a WE-moir if I think of all the people who helped me get from there to here”.

Spanning 40 chapters, each named after a U2 song, Bono’s book walks readers through his early days in Ireland, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was 14, to U2’s journey to the top, and his years-long commitment to good causes.

“When I started to write this book, I was hoping to draw in detail what I’d previously only sketched in songs. The people, places, and possibilities in my life,” he explains. “Surrender” is “a word freighted with meaning for me. Growing up in Ireland in the seventies with my fists up (musically speaking), it was not a natural concept. A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book.”

Bono is no stranger to the stage. As a member of U2, the band re-wrote the history books with the 360° Tour which, in 2011, passed the $580 million mark, making it the then-highest-grossing tour in Billboard Boxscore history (Ed Sheeran has since overtake that figure).

The 62-year-old singer has also flirted with writing. In 2007, he was tapped as the first-ever guest editor of Vanity Fair , a year after filling-in for the same role at the U.K.’s Independent .

About The Book

Bono—artist, activist, and the lead singer of Irish rock band U2—has written a memoir: honest and irreverent, intimate and profound, Surrender is the story of the remarkable life he’s lived, the challenges he’s faced, and the friends and family who have shaped and sustained him.

“When I started to write this book, I was hoping to draw in detail what I’d previously only sketched in songs. The people, places, and possibilities in my life. Surrender is a word freighted with meaning for me. Growing up in Ireland in the seventies with my fists up (musically speaking), it was not a natural concept. A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book. I am still grappling with this most humbling of commands. In the band, in my marriage, in my faith, in my life as an activist. Surrender is the story of one pilgrim’s lack of progress . . . With a fair amount of fun along the way.” —Bono

As one of the music world’s most iconic artists and the cofounder of the organizations ONE and (RED), Bono’s career has been written about extensively. But in Surrender, it’s Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism dedicated to the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty. Writing with candor, self-reflection, and humor, Bono opens the aperture on his life—and the family, friends, and faith that have sustained, challenged, and shaped him.

Surrender’s subtitle, 40 Songs, One Story, is a nod to the book’s forty chapters, which are each named after a U2 song. Bono has also created forty original drawings for Surrender, which will appear throughout the book.

Out Of Control – ‘SURRENDER: 40 Songs, One Story’ by Bono

Bono reads an extract from his book – ‘SURRENDER: 40 Songs, One Story’ – in an animation which illustrates an extract from the chapter titled ‘Out of Control’, in which he tells the story of starting to write U2’s first single on 10th May 1978 – his 18th birthday, exactly 44 years ago today. In ‘SURRENDER’ – out on 1st November – Bono writes about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with—from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was 14, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his 20 years of activism dedicated to the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty. The title ‘SURRENDER: 40 Songs, One Story’ refers to the book’s 40 chapters, which are each named after a U2 song. Bono has also created 40 original drawings for ‘SURRENDER’ which will appear throughout the book, and also feature in this animated video.

About the Author

The lead singer of U2, Bono was born Paul David Hewson in Dublin. He met The Edge, Larry Mullen Jr., and Adam Clayton at school, and in 1978, U2 was formed. The band released their first album, Boy, on Island Records in 1980 and to date have released a total of fourteen studio albums that have sold 157 million copies worldwide. Heralded by Rolling Stone as “a live act simply without peer,” the band’s record-breaking 360° Tour (2009–2011) remains the highest-grossing concert band tour of all time. U2 have won numerous awards, including twenty-two Grammys, more than any other duo or group, as well as an Academy Award nomination and the Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Award. In 2005, U2 was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Alongside his role in U2, Bono is a ground-breaking activist. A leader in Jubilee 2000’s Drop the Debt campaign, he next took on the fight against HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty, co-founding sister organizations ONE and (RED). ONE is a movement of millions of people dedicated to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease. With ONE, Bono has lobbied heads of state and legislatures all around the world, helping to ensure the passage of programs, such as the U.S. PEPFAR AIDS program, that have helped to save tens of millions of lives over the past twenty years. (RED)—which partners with companies to raise public awareness about, and corporate contributions for, the AIDS crisis—has to date generated more than $700 million for the Global Fund to treat and prevent AIDS in Africa. Since 2020, ONE and (RED) have also been fighting COVID-19 and its impact on the developing world.

In 2016, Bono co-founded the Rise Fund, a global impact fund investing in entrepreneurial companies driving positive social and environmental change in alignment with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Bono has received a number of awards for his music and activism, including the Freedom of the City of Dublin (with U2), Chile’s Pablo Neruda Medal of Honor, the Légion d’honneur from the French government, an honorary British knighthood, the Fulbright Prize for International Understanding, and TIME magazine’s Person of the Year (along with Bill and Melinda Gates). He lives in Dublin with his wife Ali Hewson.

U2 frontman Bono thrills in Toronto at only solo Canadian date Back to video

The 62-year-old released his memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, on Nov. 1, and has devised a one-man show worthy of a Broadway run that sees him reading — really, acting out — passages from the book while singing shortened versions of U2 songs.

There was everything from the Dublin’s band’s very first single Out Of Control, their first hit I Will Follow, and Live Aid breakout song Sunday Bloody Sunday, to mention only three of the 14 tunes he performed at Meridian Hall.

Who knew these arena rock anthems could sound so good accompanied by just cello (Katie Ellis), harp-keyboards-vocals (Gemma Doherty) and keyboards/percussion (Jacknife Lee)?

“I can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday night,” the singer said about halfway through his very personal and moving concert that also detailed his 2016 heart surgery (it also opens the book).

“I can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday night,” said @U2 ’s #Bono whose #storiesofsurrender show came to #Toronto ’s Meridian Hall for its only Can date. Despite long lines due to Yondr packets for phones, which weren’t allowed during the concert, plus having to go through metal detectors, everyone seemed totally stoked once inside for the hour-and-45-minute performance in such an intimate space. Each attendee also was also given a copy of Surrender.

The stage was bare save for a few tables and chairs and the background was a revolving series of sketches in white and yellow depending on what Bono was speaking or singing about.

He also name checked Canadians Leonard Cohen, Daniel Lanois, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell and thanked Canada for giving his band their career, and the prime minister (and Canadians) for supporting AIDS activism.

But Bono was at his funniest when impersonating U2 bassist Adam Clayton (“Where might I find the smoking room?” the British-educated Clayton elegantly said when first applying for the bass player job); his dad, tenor Bob Hewson (“Anything startling or surprising?” was his opening line every time father and son met up for their otherwise silent weekly pub visits); opera star Luciano Pavarotti (who showed up unannounced at Dublin airport with a camera crew in tow), and Princess Diana (her slow motion walk towards Hewson and very proper “How do you do?” melted the old man’s gruff exterior).

“Eight hundred years of oppression was melted in eight seconds,” Bono joked.

Then there was the seminal week in 1978 that he recalled starting to date his future wife Alison Stewart (they met when she was 12) and joining U2 (initially called The Hype) after drummer Larry Mullen Jr. placed an ad looking for musicians.

Turns out Mullen and guitarist The Edge were the only ones who really knew how to play.

But it was the deaths of Bono’s mother, Iris, from an aneurysm while at her own father’s funeral when he was 14 and later Hewson in 2001 that really struck a chord.

Bono said he was always a baritone thinking he was a tenor and when his dad died he really became one, as he ended Sunday’s show singing Pavarotti’s favourite Torna a Surriento in Italian and a capella.

Definitely a night to remember.

Bono opens book tour before adoring fans at Beacon Theatre

By Hillel Italie, The Associated Press

Posted November 3, 2022 12:45 am.

Last Updated November 3, 2022 12:46 am.

NEW YORK (AP) — Bono opened his book tour Wednesday night in what he called a “transgressive” mood, a little bit guilty for appearing on stage with three musicians who were not his fellow members of U2 and otherwise singing, joking and shouting out his life story to thousands of adoring fans at Manhattan’s Beacon Theatre.

He even performed one song in Italian, a flawlessly operatic take of “Torna a Surriento.”

“This is all a little surreal,” he noted at one point. “But it seems to be going well.”

The 62-year-old singer, songwriter and humanitarian described himself as an eternal boy (born Paul David Hewson) with his fists “in the air,” a “grandstanding” rock star and a baritone trying to be a tenor. He is now a published and best-selling author, his “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story” out this week and already in the top 10 on Amazon.com.

Through “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” “Where the Streets Have No Name” and other U2 classics, he traces his biography from his stifling childhood home in Dublin and the grief over the early death of his mother Iris Hewson to the formation of the band that made him a global celebrity and his enduring marriage to Alison Stewart.

Former President Bill Clinton, Tom Hanks and U2 guitarist The Edge were among his famous admirers in the audience, which often stood and cheered and sang along. For the 90-minute plus “Stories of Surrender” show, billed as “an evening of words, music, and some mischief,” Bono wore a plain black blazer, matching pants and added color with his orange-tinted glasses. He opened with an account from his book of his heart surgery in 2016, but otherwise pranced and leapt like a man who had never seen the inside of a hospital and belted out songs written decades ago without any sense he had forgotten what inspired them.

Ticket prices were rock star levels: thousands of dollars for the best seats and well into the hundreds even for obstructed views. Compared to a U2 show, the setting was relatively intimate — handwritten illustrations on screens hanging toward the back of the stage and a few tables and chairs that Bono used as props to climb on or to simulate conversations. With warm and comic mimicry, he recalled phone calls with Luciano Pavarotti and his pleas of “Bono, Bono, Bono” as the opera star recruited him to perform at a benefit show in Modena, Italy, and once turned up at U2’s studio on short notice — with a film crew.

Bono also re-enacted his many tense bar room meetings with his father, who seemed to regard his son’s career as some kind of failed business venture. Brendan Robert Hewson’s rough facade did once collapse unexpectedly — when he met Princess Diana, an encounter Bono described as like watching centuries of Irish loathing of the royals “gone in eight seconds.”

“One princess, and we’re even,” Bono added.

He spoke often of loss, of his mother when he was a teenager and of his father in 2001. But he also described his life as a story of presence, whether of his religious faith, his wife and children, or of his bandmates. After what he called the characteristic Irish response to a child’s outsized ambitions — to pretend they don’t exist — he called himself “blessed,” and added that “what was silence has been filled, mostly, with music.”

Bono Announces 14-Date Solo Concert Tour to Promote 'Surrender' Memoir: 'I Miss Being Onstage'

The tour, which kicks off at New York's Beacon Theatre on Nov. 2, coincides with the release of the U2 rocker's new memoir

bono book tour toronto

Bono is going on tour!

Earlier this week, the U2 frontman, 62, announced a series of solo shows in support of his forthcoming memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story , which is due out Nov. 1.

"I miss being onstage and the closeness of U2's audience," Bono said in a press release. "In these shows, I've got some stories to sing, and some songs to tell... Plus I want to have some fun presenting my ME-moir, Surrender , which is really more of a WE-moir if I think of all the people who helped me get from there to here."

The tour kicks off at New York City's Beacon Theatre on Nov. 2, and Bono will make stops in cities including Chicago and Los Angeles before heading overseas for shows in Europe and wrapping the run in Madrid on Nov. 28.

Published by Alfred A. Knopf, the book — named after a track on U2's 1983 album War — comprises 40 different chapters, each named after a U2 song and featuring original drawings by the Irish rocker.

Surrender chronicles Bono's Dublin childhood, including the loss of his mother at 14, U2's rise to fame, and his activism in the fight against HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty with "candor, self-reflection and humor," according to a press release.

"When I started to write this book, I was hoping to draw in detail what I'd previously only sketched in songs," Bono said in a statement. "The people, places and possibilities in my life. Surrender is a word freighted with meaning for me."

He continued at the time, "Growing up in Ireland in the seventies with my fists up (musically speaking), it was not a natural concept. A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book. I am still grappling with this most humbling of commands. In the band, in my marriage, in my faith, in my life as an activist. Surrender is the story of one pilgrim's lack of progress . . . With a fair amount of fun along the way."

Bono will also narrate an audiobook through Penguin Random House.

In May, an animated video with an excerpt from the chapter titled "Out of Control" was released. The video featured some of the star's drawings which documented the story of Bono writing U2's first single on his 18th birthday in 1978.

Tickets, which will include a copy of the book, are on sale now. More information is available at the Surrender website .

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - NOVEMBER 02: (Exclusive Coverage) Bono performs on stage for the opening night of ‘Stories of Surrender’ at Beacon Theatre on November 02, 2022 in New York City. New York City’s historic Beacon Theater, with its stunning interiors and magnificent chandelier, is a long way from the punk clubs where Irish rockers U2 cut their teeth in the late ’70s. But the group’s lead singer, Bono , was able to conjure the band’s early days in vibrant detail with just tables, chairs, monitors displaying his lo-fi artwork and a tasteful instrumental trio during the opening stop of his “ Stories of Surrender ” book tour on Nov. 2.

Popular on Variety

Bono’s voice was strong and clear while performing the hits, soaring over the tasteful arrangements on anthems such as “Beautiful Day,” “Where the Streets Have No Name” and “Desire.” But his Irish lilt was humble in storytelling, whether recalling a life-saving heart surgery or recounting his weekly conversations with his father, Bob, in their local Irish pub, which continued well into the band’s success. The banter between the duo was revisited several times throughout the performance, which includes charming run-ins with icons like Princess Diana and Luciano Pavarotti. The latter teed up the emotional climax of the show, with Bono delivering a show-stopping rendition of “Torna a Surriento,” the Neapolitan song famously recorded by the legendary tenor.

‘If Bono goes on a bit, there is a vast amount to get through.’

Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story by Bono review – from Boy to Mandela

In his long but fascinating memoir, the self-confessed ‘speechifying’ U2 frontman isn’t shy of exploring the roots of his pomposity, faith and ‘white saviour’ activism

S urrender begins with the U2 singer and activist nearly dying and ends with him being born. Both episodes are floridly written, a kind of poetic grandiloquence that tempers a default long-windedness throughout these 40 chapters (the “songs” of the title).

But you don’t come to the 500+-page memoir by a big-mouth vocalist of a squillion-selling stadium act for pithiness. If Paul Hewson was born with “an eccentric heart” (a medical condition, rather than a metaphysical state), he also has 130% of a civilian’s lung capacity and a self-acknowledged tendency to “speechify”. The infamous “Bono talk”, after all, welcomes newbie rock stars to fame with an avuncular survey of the pitfalls ahead.

So: not a book for anyone allergic to words. Lyrics – Bono’s own and others’ – quotes from Irish poets and bits of the Bible add to the prose that recounts, analyses, self-flagellates and pays tribute here.

If he goes on a bit, well, there is a vast amount to get through. Like many stars, from Lennon/McCartney through Madonna via John Lydon, Bono lost his mother at a young age. His rages, stubborn streak and stadium-size need for validation all come under close scrutiny, as does his complicated relationship with his late father, who, Bono finds out later in life, also fathered Bono’s cousin.

‘More than a tale of epic Celtic rock’n’roll’: U2 (l-r: Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr, the Edge and Bono) in 1979

Even before U2’s debut album, 1980’s Boy , there is a great deal to contend with, not least the loss of a close friend to the Troubles, finding their astute (now ex-) manager, Paul McGuinness, and some serious quandaries about whether rock’n’roll could be God’s work. If McGuinness was U2’s fifth member, then the “immortal invisible” is the sixth. (Bassist Adam Clayton is more agnostic.)

As annoyed as many were back when U2 unexpectedly gave every iTunes owner a copy of their Songs of Innocence album in 2014 (he’s really sorry about that), Hewson clearly remains a pop star like no other, even if Chris Martin of Coldplay shares a tendril of his modus operandi.

Many give to charity, many campaign. But armed with dossiers of stats, Hewson had a frontline role in the Jubilee 2000 anti-poverty movement. Headed by British economist Ann Pettifor , this coalition of groups and celebrities of conscience – the Dalai Lama, Muhammad Ali – persuaded the US et al to cancel billions of dollars of debt from developing countries.

Bono knows he can be annoying. Fortunately, he can also be the right kind of annoying when, say, persistence and a silver tongue are needed to get big guns on side.

For the many encounters with musical greats here – he passes out on Frank Sinatra’s white sofa, worried he’s lost bladder control – the most gripping passages come where the stubborn, religious punk from Dublin unsheathes what must, admittedly, be a very silver tongue when it counts. If the “behind the music” content is strong in Surrender , the real-world behemoths are next-level: US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, Steve Jobs, Nelson Mandela, arch-conservative congressman Jesse Helms, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, various Kennedys, George Soros, presidents Bill Clinton and George W Bush, Warren Buffett, Diana, Princess of Wales, Rupert Murdoch, Oprah Winfrey, Dr Anthony Fauci, Gerry Adams, Bill and Melinda Gates and the previous pope. As interesting as U2 fans may well find tales of recording Achtung Baby , the big-picture stuff means Surrender is so much more than a tale of epic Celtic rock’n’roll, quite light on the sex’n’drugs.

It’s all about the antiretrovirals. At the height of HIV/Aids, the infamous US evangelical Helms fulminated against the victims. There are few better defences of Bono’s particular combination of gab and grit than his turning Helms round on international aid for people with HIV by quoting chapter and verse of scripture at him. Cue $500m to spend on preventing mother-child HIV transmission in Africa – if not exactly an open-hearted embrace of same-sex relations closer to home.

‘An episode that reads like a thriller’: Bono with President George W Bush in 2002

Another episode reads like a thriller. The ongoing campaign to combat HIV in the developing world agonises about endorsing a watered-down aid announcement by the Bush Jr administration, morally compromised by the war in Iraq. Bono receives Rice’s promise that, in exchange for endorsing this interim package, the HIV money will come later. He reluctantly agrees. Aghast, Soros chides him for selling the campaign out “for a plate of lentils”. In the end, though, Rice and Bush honour the handshake and put $100bn into a plan for Aids relief known as Pepfar . As Bono reasonably exhales, it’s “a lot of lentils”.

So much of this comes under the aegis of “white saviour” work. He is alive to the accusation: in hindsight, Band Aid was tin-eared; the dearth of African representatives in the room at Jubilee and other organisations Hewson has been involved with, such as (RED) , which also fights HIV in Africa, was hubristic (African partners are now on board).

He acknowledges that he leaves Ali, the wife he credits with keeping him upright and sane, at home with the kids while gallivanting off to save other people’s kids. If Bono has a tendency to wax eloquent, Surrender is also a comprehensive survey of his character flaws, his pomposity and his mistakes. One thing he really doesn’t clear up satisfactorily, though, is U2’s tax position , repeating the line that U2 is a business that has to be run on business principles, including tax efficiency (the company is based in the Netherlands).

The real eye-opener throughout is the depth, breadth and idiosyncrasy of his faith, a non-sectarian Catholicism that’s not strictly church-y. At a tender age, three of U2 attended a back-to-basics religious group known as Shalom that sought to live as first-century Christians.

He writes persuasively about learning from the US civil rights campaigners to find “doors to walk through” to move a cause forward. In the US, that means a dialogue with rightwingers expedited by faith.

He locates himself in “the compromised middle”, a pragmatist who gets things done by breaking bread with the enemy. He acknowledges that even some in his own band find that hard to live with. Most pop star memoirs are confessionals of one sort or another. This one finds Bono examining his conscience more knowledgeably than most.

U2 lead singer Bono sings his heart out onstage.

In 2014, Apple gave iTunes users U2’s newest album, “Songs of Innocence,” free of charge.

Eight years later, their lead singer and frontman Bono is embarking on a short tour promoting his new memoir “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story,” and let’s just say… these tickets have been popular, with or without you.

Now, it will cost a pretty penny to hear the “Sunday Bloody Sunday” singer live at one of his 14 gigs spanning the globe.

Case in point, the lowest price we saw for tickets to Bono’s Nov. 2 appearance at New York City’s Beacon Theatre was $278 before fees on Vivid Seats after the event sold out on Ticketmaster in less than 20 minutes.

That’s not to say the shows won’t be a good time, though.

At each stop, Bono promises “some stories to sing, and some songs to tell” in a night full of “words, music and some mischief.”

Enough beating around the bush.
