Watch Bring Me The Horizon play songs with alt-pop star Aurora and kawaii metal sensations Babymetal at Japanese concert

The UK pop-metal favourites brought out some heavyweight talent when they performed in Tokyo over the weekend

Bring Me The Horizon welcomed guest appearances from alt-pop star Aurora and kawaii metal trio Babymetal at a concert during the weekend.

The UK pop-metal group were performing at the Summer Sonic festival in Tokyo yesterday (August 18) when they were joined by the two artists. Watch fan-filmed footage of the two guest spots below.

Bring Me were first joined by Aurora for the song Limousine . The track features the Norwegian singer/songwriter on its studio version, heard on the band’s 2024 album Post-Human: Nex Gen . Its Summer Sonic Tokyo performance marks the first time Bring Me and Aurora collaborated onstage.

Babymetal appeared for Kingslayer, taken from Bring Me’s 2020 album Post Human: Survival Horror . The Japanese three-piece appeared on the original studio track and have performed it live with Bring Me multiple times in the past.

In May, Bring Me vocalist Oli Sykes revealed that the band originally hoped to collaborate with pop sensation Billie Eilish on Limousine . Sykes previously teased the collaboration in the comments of one of Eilish’s Instagram posts, simply writing the word “limousine”.

“The Billie thing was just: her photographer’s a massive fan, and they kinda mentioned the idea of her doing a song,” Sykes explained on the BBC Radio 1 Rock Show.

“So I sent her Limousine . And this was quite a while before it was in its full, finished state. I mean, I can’t say for 100 percent that she listened to it, but I knew it got to her.”

He continued: “So me thinking that Limousine wouldn’t mean anything to anyone but me and maybe her if she saw the comment, [I] left it on her Instagram, not thinking that a week or two later when we did the tour, we put the file names on our visuals live, and everyone connected it.

“It was one of them things that seemed like such a proper cheap way to try and get some press, but it really wasn’t. I was actually quite embarrassed when I found out – like, ‘Oh god, no!’ Because I knew the chance of Billie doing a song with us was slim to none.”

Bring Me The Horizon are currently touring Asia and will next perform in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Wednesday (August 21). See the band’s full list of upcoming shows on their website .

Aurora released her new album, What Happened To The Heart? , in June. She revealed in an interview last month that she hopes to one day make a metal album .

Babymetal released a collaborative track with German synth-metal pair Electric Callboy, Ratatata , in May.

Bring Me the Horizon have established themselves as one of the most enduring metalcore groups to come out of Sheffield, UK with their brooding mix of deathcore rock and dabbling in other styles such as electronica and classical.

The band formed in 2004 when lead singer and principal songwriter Oliver Sykes was only 16 some of the group’s members were even younger. The average age of the band during their formation was 15. Apart from Sykes the rest of the band included guitarists Lee Malia and Curtis Ward, bassist Matt Kean, and drummer Matt Nicholls. The line up has not changed much since. “I Killed the Prom Queen” guitarist Jona Weinhofen replaced Curtis Ward in 2009, but eventually left in 2013 and keyboardist Jordan Fish completed the current line up in 2012.

Despite the groups young age the members of the band were already musically experienced. Lee Malia who had a keen interest in melodic death metal was in a Metallica tribute band prior to joining Bring Me the Horizon and Matt Kean had been in several local bands before entering the group. All the members were rooted in metal and hard rock, but it was Matt Nicholls and Oliver Sykes who really pushed the band in the hardcore punk and death metal direction. Before they formed Bring Me the Horizon Nicholls and Sykes would frequent American hardcore shows featuring such bands as southern metalcore act Norma Jean and New York’s Skycamefalling.

Oliver Skyes also wrote and recorded material before forming Bring Me the Horizon. Skyes spent a good portion of his childhood between Adelaide and Perth, but moved back to the UK when he was eight. Skyes was enrolled at the same school as Arctic Monkeys band members Alex Turner, Andy Nicholson and Matt Helders, though he was a year below them. During his attendance their in 2003 Sykes put together a CD compilation under the name Quakebeat. He also found interest in rap and formed a hip-hop group called “Womb 2 Da Tomb” with his brother and now fellow bandmate Nicholls. Sykes went on to pursue his true passion, forming the metal group “Purple Curto” with his school mate. While attending a concert of one of his favorite bands Funeral for a Friend he was granted the incredible opportunity to sing one of their songs on stage. Sykes recalls this as the best day of his life and just a little after this experience he formed Bring Me the Horizon.

The group released its first EP “This Is What the Edge of Your Seat Was Made For” on 2 October 2004 and was signed to UK label Thirty Days of Night Records for a four album record deal. The album was reissued in 2005 and made all the way to #41 on the UK album charts. The band went on to release their 2006 debut album Count Your Blessings. Though the album received mixed reaction from the general public and critics, the band was able to gain some praiseworthy traction, being endowed at the 2006 Kerrang! Awards ceremony as being the Best British Newcomers and opening up for The Red Chord on their UK dates. Bring Me the Horizon saw themselves touring more and more, though they received many of their early gigs through scheming against unassuming concert promoters.

The early iteration of Bring Me the Horizon was rough and unruly. The band would constantly consume alcohol and lose focus in their recording sessions. Their reputation seemed to exceed them on several accounts. When opening for Kill Switch Engaged on a European tour they were met by disgruntled fans who threw bottles at them before they even started playing and during the recording of their second album “Suicide Season” producer Fredrik Nordstrom was often absent from the sessions because of his negative premonitions of the band. However the group showed incredible potential with their sophomore release and delved into a much more focused sound.This release is attributed with introducing several varying stylistic changes opting for a more straightforward metalcore sound and incorporating elements of drum and bass, dubstep and industrial music.

The band continued to experiment with a more pop oriented sound for their preceding records and made a major breakthrough with their third LP “There Is a Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is a Heaven, Let’s Keep It A Secret”. This album appeared number 1 on the Australian Albums Chart, Number 13 on the UK Rock Chart and number 17 on the Billboard 200 in the US. The band left Epitaph records and put out their fourth album “Sempiternal” on RCA in 2013. This album also did exceptionally well on the UK, US and Australia album charts and saw the band playing alongside notable acts such as Rise Against and Bullet for My Valentine.

Oliver Sykes, Lee Malia, Matt Kean, Matt Nicholls, and Jordan Fish, collectively known as Bring Me The Horizon, constitute a rock band established in Sheffield in 2004. Oli Sykes and Matt Nicholls initially connected over a shared passion for hardcore punk and American metal. They later met Lee Malia, who was then involved in a Metallica tribute band. Completing the formation were Curtis Ward and bassist Matt Kean, the latter of whom had experience performing with local bands before joining the group in March 2004.

September 2004 saw their debut EP release, ‘This Is What the Edge of Your Seat Was Made For’ which was released through Thirty Days At Night, a local UK record label. After its release, it was noticed by another record label ‘Visible Noise’, who went on to sign them for a four album deal in 2005 and the year following saw the band win ‘Best British Newcomer’ at the Kerrang Awards.

Curtis Ward left the band in 2009, to be replaced with former band mate Jona Weinhofen; who would join them on their 2010 album ‘There’s A Hell And I’ve Seen It, There Is A Heaven, Let’s Keep It A Secret’ which reached number one on the Australian Albums Chart, UK Rock and UK Indie Chart. 

Their ‘Post Human: Survival Horror’ album in 2021 gave the band their second UK number one, with the prior being Amo released in 2019. For the second installment of the Post Human series, BMTH are set to release a new album and go on tour across the UK, headlining at major music venues like Utilita Arena Birmingham, Manchester Arena and The O2 Arena in January 2024; secure your Bring Me The Horizon VIP tickets today.

Watch Bring Me The Horizon Perform “liMOusIne” Live With AURORA For The First Time

Bring Me The Horizon gave their track “ liMOusIne ” its first full-fledged live performance during their set at the ZOZO Marine Stadium in Chiba, Japan last night, August 18th. The gold-certified alternative metal stars were joined onstage by AURORA for this initial joint live performance, with the latter musician also appearing on the studio version of the track. The aforementioned Deftones -reminiscent cut has emerged as an early fan favorite from Bring Me The Horizon ‘s latest album “ POST HUMAN: NeX GEn “.

Yesterday’s set also saw Bring Me The Horizon reunite onstage with BABYMETAL for another live performance of their 2020 collab, “ Kingslayer “.

Over the weekend, System Of A Down and Deftones joined forces for a massive one-off show at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.

The two heavy music legends brought together some 50,000 fans – along with other bands The Mars Volta , Viagra Boys and VOWWS on the line-up – for an incredible-looking day of heavy music on Saturday, August 17.

And both performances marked a fairly rare occasion to see these bands in 2024: Deftones have been at some festivals over the past few months, with their Dia De Los Deftones event still to come in November , but this was only SOAD’s second live date of the year following Sick New World in April .

Deftones came up first, with a 75-minute, 15-song set of absolute bangers, opening with Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away) before going into My Own Summer (Shove It). Elsewhere, they played the likes of Swerve City, Diamond Eyes, Rosemary and Change (In The House Of Flies), before finishing up with 7 Words.

System had the longer show, playing for 85 minutes and squeezing in a 25-song setlist. They had their 2020 single Genocidal Humanoidz as an opener for the first time, and dropped the likes of Suite-Pee, Prison Song, B.Y.O.B. and Deer Dance early on (oooooft!). Their show included Mr. Jack for the first time since 2019, and P.L.U.C.K. and Know for the first time since 2018, and also included mega-hits like Chop Suey!, Lonely Day, Aerials, Toxicity and set-closer Sugar.

Pendulum talk wild new single ‘Napalm’, a “circle of inspiration” with Bring Me The Horizon, and returning to Reading & Leeds

Pendulum have returned with their huge new single ‘Napalm’, featuring Joey Valance and Brae . Check out below, along with our interview with frontman Rob Swire.

The rave-rock pioneers are back with the follow-up to their comeback EPs [2021’s ‘Elemental’ and 2023’s ‘Anima’] with another genre-smashing track that layers hard rock and punk on top of their founding dance sound.

“The label pretty much came to us saying, ‘Make some more drum’n’bass,” Swire told NME . “As you know, I’ve got a weird relationship with that! We decided to go in and make it as heavy as possible, rather than make something that would fit into DnB sets. We wanted to make it our own way.”

NME : Hello Rob. What led you to team with Joey Valance and Brae on ‘Napalm’?

Rob Swire : “I was in Cape Town at my dad’s place for Christmas and my phone woke me up playing their song ‘Punk Tactics’. I was half-asleep when I heard it and just suddenly woke up thinking, ‘What the fuck is this? Some vintage Beastie Boys thing I’ve never heard before?’ It fucking blew my mind.

“When I found out it was a recent thing I was like, ‘This is fucking sick. We have to use these guys before someone else steals them’. We’ve got a thing going on where as soon as we find an artist we like we’re like, ‘We’ve got to collaborate with these guys before at least one other artist we watch closely steals the idea beforehand and ruins it’.”

You’ve worked with the likes of Bullet For My Valentine ‘s Matt Tuck and Scarlxrd in recent years. What do you look for in a collaborator? “Just someone fun to have in the studio. We’ve done so many sessions by now that it’s nice to have people that are friends rather than straight-up collaborators. Scar is probably one of my favourite people we’ve working with – I wish he was in Pendulum permanently almost. The energy was so natural.”

Do you have any dream collabs left? 

“Yes, loads – but I don’t know if any of them would be good ideas or say yes. We’ve approached a few who have shut us down, and there are a few left who will probably shut us down!”

Is ‘Napalm’ a sign of things to come?

“I want to take it much heavier. I know drum ‘n’ bass is having a moment again and we keep getting every Tom, Dick and Harry across our entire work team being like, ‘You guys have to get in on this and start making some DnB that fits in Headache’s set’, but it’s just the last thing I want to fucking do. I feel most comfortable when we’re in between worlds. As soon as it goes too metal or too DnB, then I start to feel weird about it. The middle of that ground is the perfect zone for us. I want to take it much heavier if we can.”

Will it be some more singles next or are you guys working on the follow-up to  2010 album ‘Immersion’?

“We’ll see; at the moment we’re just doing singles. We’d like to come out with something more substantial in the next year or so.”

When you guys came back with ‘Elemental’ and ‘Anima’, how did it feel that there was still such a hunger for Pendulum in that form? Why do you think that is?

“We chose a path and we stuck to it. We departed from DnB pretty heavily in 2006 and forged our own weird path that I don’t think anyone has done in the same way. I think that’s what attracts people. It’s a source of paranoia after that long to think, ‘We’re putting all this work into this, is anyone going to give a shit?’ To find out that they do and so many people are still into it is amazing.”

Do you hear your influence on other artists? For instance, bands like Bring Me The Horizon and that cyberpunk wave of bands that throw everything at it?

“I didn’t initially, but then I started talking to some of these bands who were like, ‘Oh man, we were so inspired by you guys when we started out’. I was like, ‘Really? I can’t fucking hear it, but that’s amazing if so’. After listening for a while, I can now hear those influences. It’s come full circle now. Some of those bands are influencing us. I saw Bring Me’s live show and was like, ‘Holy shit, that’s entertaining on a level I didn’t even know was possible! We have to step it up!’ It’s good that there’s a circle of inspiration going on. I like that.”

This weekend will be your sixth time performing at Reading & Leeds. How would you describe your relationship with that festival?

“It’s probably historically my favourite one to play, out of any festival in the world. I think we did the BBC Introducing stage the first time and it was televised on the main channel back then. We saw security running across the festival to stop the amount of people that were flooding across the barriers and causing mayhem. It was a fucking scene, that I wasn’t expecting. It was the first festival where I thought, ‘Fuck me, there’s something happening here that is beyond the levels that I had in mind for this.”

Is there anyone else on the line-up you really want to see this year?

“I really like Crawlers ; they’re cool. I’d also love to see Ashnikko and Japanese House . I’d probably go see Fred Again.. just to see what all the noise is about. My theory is that no one else gets it yet either and they’re just checking it out. That’s what’s attractive!”

Beyond this, what’s the plan for Pendulum?

“I feel like we’ve been trying to go for a certain sound since 2006 that we’ve never quite perfected. Even the guy who signed us said as much, initially. He said, ‘You’re going for a sound you’ve never quite attained’. At first I was like, ‘Fuck you’, but the more I think about it the more I agree. That’s cool, as you need something to aim for.”

Bring Me The Horizon Profile

ring Me the Horizon, often known by the acronym BMTH, are an English rock band from Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Formed in 2004, the group now consists of vocalist Oliver Sykes, guitarist Lee Malia, bassist Matt Kean, drummer Matt Nicholls and keyboardist Jordan Fish. They are signed to RCA Records globally and Columbia Records exclusively in the United States. The style of their early work, including their debut album Count Your Blessings, has been described primarily as deathcore, but they started to adopt a more eclectic style of metalcore on later albums. Furthermore, their latest album That’s the Spirit marked a shift in their sound to less aggressive rock music styles.

The band released their debut album Count Your Blessings in 2006. Upon release, the album’s sound polarized listeners, and was met with critical disdain. The band began to break away from their controversial sound with Suicide Season (2008), which was a creative, critical and commercial turning point for the band.

Bring Me the Horizon released their third album, There Is a Hell, Believe Me, I’ve Seen It. There Is a Heaven, Let’s Keep It a Secret, in 2010, propelling them to greater international fame, whilst incorporating influences from classical, electronica and pop.

Their major label debut, Sempiternal (2013) achieved Gold certification in Australia (35,000) and Silver in the United Kingdom (60,000). That’s the Spirit (2015) debuted at number two in the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200.

As well as these five studio albums, they have also released two extended plays and two live albums. They have received four Kerrang! Awards, including two for Best British Band and one for Best Live Band.

About Bring Me the Horizon

You rarely hear of a metalcore band progress to a point where they sound so different, yet they still voice the same passion for metal. Go back to 2006, when Bring Me the Horizon released their album debut "Count Your Blessing" which is an ode to grind-core and death metal. Fast forward to 2019, and "Amo" their latest album sounds nothing like you've ever imagined. However, it did bring the band two Grammy Awards nominations. With each new album released, the Sheffield group worked towards a mainstream sound, bringing in sound elements from electronica, classical music, and pop. The group doesn't sound cheesy or dull, they dug deep into their artistic pocket, and brought out original interpretations of metalcore, with that twisted pop sound.
