  • Caramoan Tour Packages 2021

You might have already heard of Caramoan Islands. It has been chosen as the location for many “Survivor” TV shows worldwide. And it was chosen for a very good reason – being the ultimate secluded tropical paradise.

Getting there is complicated, so book your Caramoan tour with our experts to avoid any possible hassle and complications. Come and visit this island for one of the best island hopping experiences, and wonderful private beach resorts. You can do that as a day trip from Bicol or as part of a longer vacation package. All of our Caramoan packages include flights, accommodation and tours. With us, you are guaranteed a true all inclusive experience in paradise.

How to get to Caramoan?

Where to stay.

Getting to Caramoan is not as easy as it is to get to other destination in the Philippines. The reason is that it hasn’t been commercialized yet.

There are several routes to get from Manila to Caramoan. You can either take a night bus from Araneta-Cubao bus terminal, or Pasay City bus terminal heading to Naga City. It is an 8-9 hours trip and cost 650-1000P (13-20$).

If you choose to get to Caramoan from Naga , you will need to choose between two routes, by land or by sea. To get there by land , take a bus from Naga City Bus Terminal, also known as Bicol Central Bus Terminal heading to Caramoan. MRR, Raymond and Florencia Bus companies have buses that leave as early as 6:30 AM, and the trip is 4 hours long.

The more popular route however, which is also shorter, is by boat from Sabang Port . The eastbound van terminal at the back of SM City Naga Mall has vans departing to Sabang Port from 6:00 AM. Travel time is 1-1.5 hours. From Sabang Port take a boat to Guijalo Port in Caramoan, about 1.5 hours. From there a short tricycle ride will bring you to the town proper.

Getting to Caramoan by airplane is a lot easier and much more convenient. There are daily flights to Naga from Manila and Cebu. Be sure to be in Naga early enough so you can catch the last boat to go to Guijalo port from Sabang at 11:00 AM. If you are not coming from Manila fly into Naga and follow the instructions above.

The shortest way however is to arrive in Catanduanes, and hire a tricycle to take you to Codon Port. From there hire a boat to take you to Caramoan Islands. The trip all over should take you around 3 hours, but flights to Virac are far more expensive and less frequent than flights to Naga.

If you book with us we can coordinate an airport pickup from Naga to your resort, and for larger groups we can hire a van from Manila directly to Caramoan. Contact us and we’ll figure out the best way for you.

When visiting a unique place like Caramoan, you want your accommodation to be as special as possible. It’s of course a matter of budget, but every hotel and resort on our catalog has been carefully handpicked to ensure you’ll get the best value for what you pay.

Caramoan hasn’t been commercialized yet, and that’s a good thing, because its beauty is still raw and untouched. On the other hand, the selection is limited. Most of the resorts are basic, but there are some high-end all inclusive resorts that will give you the best accommodation experience you can hope for. It’s better to book ahead of time because these resorts get fully booked very quickly, especially during christian holidays when locals go on vacation.

Most of the budget and mid range accommodation is in the town itself. Although they are not beachfront, they offer good value for money. All of them are within walking distance from the town’s attractions, and a short ride from Paniman Beach and other gateways for island hopping tours.

Choose a resort from our list depending on your needs and budget. If you are still not sure contact us, and we will understand together what’s best for you.

Caramoan Travel Essentials:

  • Location : Camarines Sur Province, Bicol Region. 3-4 hours from Naga City
  • Flights : There are several daily flights from Manila and Cebu to Naga City
  • Ferries : There are ferries from Sabang Port (accessible from Naga) to Guijalo Port
  • Getting around : A tricycle will take your around town, and a small boat will take you around the islands
  • Best time to visit : March to May is summer and the peak season. Caramoan is very wet during winter
  • Attractions : Island hopping, beaches, caving, nature
  • Extra tips : Avoid visiting if there is a “Survivor” production going on. Most of the beautiful beaches are closed to public. Also avoid holidays as local tourists tend to flock this place

What to do in Caramoan Islands?

Caramoan’s main attraction is island hopping. The islands and beaches are literally untouched, and among the top island hopping experiences the Philippines has to offer. Besides of beautiful beaches, there are also many mainland attractions to make your stay here unforgettable.

Island hopping tours in Caramoan

Sabitang beach in Caramoan

The boats taking you island hopping in the Caramoan Islands are waiting in Bikal Boat Terminal or Paniman Beach. There are several tours you can choose from, and price is usually determined by the distance from the mainland. The rate for the tour to the closer islands is 1500P (30$) and the far islands tour rate is 2500P (50$). The boat is good for 6 people. You can pre-book the tours through us or do it while there. If you are alone or travel as a couple, and want to save money, you can also look around for other tourists who might join you and share the fare.

The islands close to shore include: Matukad, Lahos and Hunongan Cove. Matukad Island is very unique and used to be the place for the council meetings of the “Survivor” series. Tayak Lagoon is its main attraction, with its clear turquoise water which is full of giant milkfish. A very popular activity on this island is climbing the rock cliffs to get a great view of both the lagoon, and surrounding islands. Lahos Island on high tide are two separate rock formations facing each other, but on low tide a white strip of white sand will rise from the water and connect the two cliffs. This is actually one of the popular spots for the “survivor” challenges to take place.

Hunongan Cove has a beautiful white beach cradled by the towering cliffs, and is owned by a private luxury resort. As a result, stopping here will cost an additional 300P (6$) and you’ll be able to use the resort facilities. Unless you are really keen to explore some of the structures used by the “Survivor” cast, feel free to skip this one. The short trip also stops at Cagbalinad and Minalahos, two small islands that offer decent swimming, but are most notable for the scenic views of the nearby islands. You’ll get a great view of Gota Beach with its heavily forested hills and limestone cliffs.

The long island hopping tour includes: Manlawi sandbar; Cotivas Island; Sabitang Laya and Bagieng beach. Manlawi is a beach with a huge sandbar visible only on low tide. If that happens to be during lunchtime, it will make a perfect spot to take you lunch in. there are cottages you could rent: for 100-200P you can rest and eat there. Cotivas island is one of the most beautiful islands in Caramoan. It is one of the most popular spots of the “Survivor” set, and if you’ll visit there on low tide you’ll see endless sandbars stretching in front of your eyes. It also has two beaches perfect for swimming and tanning.

Sabitang Laya and Bagieng Beach are both located on Bagieng Island. Both are beautiful, and usually Sabitang Laya is the first stop on the long trip, and Bagieng Beach is the last. The first has crystal clear water, and surrounding limestone cliffs that make a scenic atmosphere. There are stinging jellyfish in the waters at times, but it’s a very nice stop nonetheless. Bagieng Beach is a long white sand beach with some coconut trees and green on it.

Outside of the regular tour there is Lahuy Island , the biggest island in Caramoan. It’s the island where Manlawi Sandbar is located, and you can also trek to its lighthouse (around 1 hour) for an amazing view of the ocean and the surrounding islands.

Literally every island on the tours will be stunning as Caramoan is one of the top spots in the Philippines for island hopping and raw nature. If you are staying for a couple of nights, taking both tours, to the nearby and far islands, is strongly advised. Moreover, it is possible to construct a personalized tour, and even to camp overnight on some of these islands.

Caves, waterfalls, and other mainland attractions

Apo island diving

If you feel like having a break from hanging at the beach, Caramoan’s mainland has some fun activities for you. Exploring the dormant town is a nice way to spend an afternoon. Visit the small shops full of friendly townsmen, the local market, and the mangrove area. The Parish Church of St. Michael the Archangel, a red brick building built in 1619 is the town’s main landmark.

There are also many caves you can explore. You’ll find Umang Cave in Barangay Paniman, and it showcases amazing stalactite formations. Bulang-Bugang Cave is accessible from near Bulang-Bugang Underground River, close to Oroc-Osoc elementary school in town. It’s a small tunnel in the bottom of a tall limestone formation, in which water pass through, and only one person can pass at a time. Culapnit cave is in Barangay Tabgon which is a bit of a drive away. it’s a bat cave with many stalactite formations in it.

Another place to visit, also in Barangay Tagbon, is Our Lady of the Most Holly Shrine. It’s a 26 ft. Marian statue reachable after a 524 steps climb, where you’ll also get a great view of the quiet fishing town at the bottom.

In the neighboring Patag Belen and Hanopol Barangays there are two waterfalls hiding, Hugsad falls and Layahan Falls. Still unknown to tourists, and the hikes are moderately difficult and take around 2 hours each. In our opinion, Hugsad falls are those who truly worth the visit compared to the difficulty of getting there.

Is Caramoan Island the right place for you?

  • Ease of reaching : Difficult
  • Best time to visit : March to May
  • White beaches
  • Island hopping
  • Nightlife : Non existent
  • Suitable for : Romantic, Adventure
  • Ease of reaching : Moderate
  • Best time to visit : November to May
  • Private beaches
  • Nightlife : Only during high season
  • Ease of reaching : Easy
  • Best beaches
  • Nightlife : Best in the Philippines
  • Suitable for : Party, Couples, Groups

There are both budget and high end options in Caramoan, but it’s hardly the cheapest place in the Philippines. In El Nido budget accommodation is generally better, and much closer to the ocean. Also, getting to Caramoan is far more complicated than both Boracay and El Nido. The views here are outstanding, but the same is true for the other two as well. Caramoan’s most significant advantage is that even during high season it’s less crowded and you can feel a kind of “castaway” atmosphere.

El Nido and Boracay are by far the two most desired places in the Philippines, and are very different from one another. While El Nido more resembles Caramoan, Boracay is very much different. It offers a tourism oriented vacation, where everything you’d want is easily accessible. Diving, snorkeling, water sports, nightlife, shopping – it’s all there. It’s very easy to get there, and resorts are all very modern. For these reasons it’s also more crowded and expensive. If you feel like having a pampering holiday, Boracay is more suitable to your desires.

El Nido resembles Caramoan in terms of the lifestyle, island hopping, and overall atmosphere. Because El Nido became one of the most visited destinations in the Philippines, it can also feel a bit crowded at times. Nonetheless, it’s big enough to host everyone and still maintain quiet and secluded spots. Diving in El Nido is considered among the top in the Philippines. El Nido also has a much wider selection of hotels and resorts of any price range. That being said, El Nido requires a longer period of time to enjoy properly, so if you plan on a short stay Caramoan will be better.

If your’e looking for a simple atmosphere, the way El Nido used to be before the crowds came in, give Caramoan a try. You can try one of our pre-made vacation packages, or let our experts build a custom itinerary just for you, where you can add Caramoan as well as other destinations that suit your personal style.

How does Caramoan fit into your travel plan?

Caramoan is best enjoyed over a couple of days. If you are already in Bicol, you can make it as an Island hopping daytrip, but even then you will feel like you are rushing it. it will also be more expensive because the last boats back to Sabang are at 2:00 PM, which means you’ll have have to rend a private tour.

This place is packed with attractions for you to choose from, and you can easily see most of what it has to offer in 2-3 days, so take a while to properly enjoy this paradise. You can do it either as a stop in your Bicol tour package, or as an independent tour package complimentary to your full Philippines vacation.

3-Day Caramoan Itinerary With Side Trip To Albay For Less Than 6000 Pesos All In

This post was most recently updated on January 4th, 2018

Caramoan is a beautiful and unspoiled place. In just a day, you can go and enjoy, at least, 3 beautiful islands. Although the distance going to Caramoan can be quite long, the experience and the view are still worth every hour of travel time. Therefore, I created a perfect 3-day Caramoan itinerary for you, yes you! This will give you the opportunity to see the highlights of Caramoan with a sidetrip to Albay to see the majestic Mayon Volcano.

Considering the travel time going to Caramoan, we opted to leave Manila as early as 7pm via Philtranco Bus. We reached our first destination which is Naga City terminal around 3 am. Unfortunately, the first trip of the bus going to Caramoan already left during that day. We had to wait for the next trip which was around 6am. While waiting, we just had a porridge for breakfast and took another round of sleep.

7pm ETD to Naga City

Caramoan Itinerary: Day 1

Long travel time.

Our first day started when we left Naga City terminal. I thought it was going to be quick. Little did I know, the travel time would also take another 4-5 hours. The first hours were manageable as I was asleep, but when I woke up in the middle of the trip and realized that we were still far from the destination, I started to feel anxious and kind of irritated (I swear I’m getting used to long road but this time it tested my patience again haha). The roads going to Caramoan at that time were under construction plus the fact that the bus always stop to load and unload passengers in every barangay. It was around 11 am when we reached The Travelers Camp where we will be staying in. We just put down our things, took a brunch, then we off for the first day of the island hopping.

Finally made it! Start to explore the beautiful islands of Caramoan

First in our list was Guinahoan Island, which is the farthest island from the port. This wasn’t the prepared itinerary for us due to our late arrival but still our guides managed the time for us to see the top most beautiful islands. Talking about the weather, there’s always a high percentage of rainfall in Caramoan, I think, because of the location that is near to Pacific Ocean. Thus, weather is not that predictable. Maybe it does not hurt that much if you bring your raincoat or umbrella with you. After soaking into the amazing view of Guinahoan, we then enjoyed ourselves on the powdery-white sand of Cotivas and Manlawi sandbar. It was around 6 pm when we got back in our accommodation.

16:00 Malawi Sandbar

19:00 Buffet Dinner

Caramoan Itinerary: Day 2

It was like almost the same setup as Day 1 except that we went to new different islands and we got the whole day just for the island hopping tour. Most of the islands that we had been to in our Day 2 Itinerary were mostly used in the reality TV show Survivors. We were so lucky at that time since it didn’t have that much people visiting Caramoan the same time with us.

Witness the two beaches at the same time while you’re in Lahos island, do rock climbing in Matukad island, and enjoy swimming and snorkeling in the clear waters of Minalahos island and Cagbalinad island.

lahos island shore in caramoan islands

If you are a fan of visiting old churches in the Philippines, then this century old church of St. Michael the Archangel is surely worth adding to your itinerary. Do this before having your buffet dinner. Although the church is sometimes closed on weekdays. Be sure to check the schedule first.

Note : lunch to be served in any one of the destinations above.

Caramoan Itinerary: Day 3

Getting ready for next destination.

Day 3 has nothing to focus more in Caramoan since the Day 1 and Day 2 itinerary covered most of the top places in Caramoan. We just prepared our things, ate breakfast, and waited for our check out time in the inn. This time we chose port Guijalo route going back to Naga city. Boat costs 120 pesos each and it will take 2 hours going to Sabang port. The boat is kinda small but it could take up to 20+ passengers including the 6 boatmen. So the whole time we were just praying that the boat would not sink. haha! Once arrived in Sabang port, you will see vans and ask the dispatcher to lead you to vans going to Naga. Travel time is only 1 hour. We took the time to visit SM Naga city and had our lunch, too. I also recommend visiting the plaza, where you can buy souvenirs. For tourists, probably the most well-known delicacies in Bicol region are tarts and pili nuts!

Guijalo Port in caramoan

Going to Cagsawa Ruins

Finish off your 3-day Caramoan vacation with a visit to one of the nearest (although that not that near) side trip which is to go to Cagsawa Ruins. From Naga city we rode a bus with a signage of Legazpi which is roughly 3 hours. Entrance in Cagsawa Ruins costs 20 pesos each, and the place is open until 6pm only. Although the Mayon Volcano didn’t show its full perfect form at that time, we just enjoyed ourselves with the food. You should definitely try the chili ice cream. It comes with different flavor however I strongly suggest the mango. I will surely come back go Albay next time when it’s not that cloudy. According to some, the Mayon shows during morning. I’ll probably consider that when I come back. There are already buses outside Cagsawa Ruins that will take you back to Manila.  We reached manila around 4am the next day.

What a beautiful location, it almost looks unreal! Caramoan and all those rock formations is somewhere I’d love to visit. What time of year did you go? I love those old Spanish churches, they’re so historic and add a charm to the place. Mango chilli ice cream sounds interetsing!

The last time I’ve seen Caramoan was still during the pre-Survivor time. This post brings back memories when we had to pitch tents at Gota Beach because there were no hotels/resorts back then. Caramoan still looks beutiful and I hope it stays that way.

There are so many beautiful islands in the Philippines and precious little time to visit them all! I love to snorkel, so I think a trip to Minalahos Island would be ideal for me. Your pictures are stunning!

Caramoan is really unspoiled like you said. Didnt follow up much on Survivors but I can make my own movie here with nature giving me its best. The islands are enchantment. And what more, these goodies can be explored in just 3 days. Everyone is complaining of weather lately, but I think its better than overcrowding. Sighs.

Wow Kevin, this is such a detailed and useful itinerary! 🙂 The place looks so pristine with its gorgeous turquoise waters and amazing islands:) Your pictures took me there! So beautiful!!

Oh my, the beaches are so gorgeous! I don’t think I would want to leave such a paradise after three days. The pictures of the Cagsawa Ruins is breathtaking, lovely shot Kevin. I would love to explore these pristine blue beaches, the place looks so untouched and relaxing.

The various islands are the key highlight here and I particularly loved Cagbalinad Island. Mysterious is how it looks. Plenty to do here for three days, I fear they might be less. Thanks for the detailed itinerary,

I just like the overall rustic, old world charm and feel of Caramoan. Great street photography I must say! Love the color of the sky and rays coming out of cloud beyond the Cagsawa Ruins.

Every island is so beautiful. I am going crazy seeing these stunning pictures of island hopping in Philippines. I haven’t been to this country till date, but I m going to put Caramoan on my list. Thank you for providing the detailed itinerary. It’s helpful.

[…] decided to visit to Caramoan? Here’s your guide and a perfect 3-day Caramoan itinerary for […]

I love the locations! 🙂 How are they so empty? Where are all the tourists? ))

we were just so lucky that there’s not much tourists on that day. 🙂

How about your accommodation? How much?

Hi! It’s already included in the island hopping tour of 2,600 pesos with free meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Hi what’s the name of the place of you accomodation? May I ask for contact details?

Also, Ilan kayo nagtour? Same rate ba if 2 lang kami?

Thanks sir!

It’s called Traveler’s Inn. My review for the said accommodation is also linked to this post. I think it will also vary depending on the number of people, but I guess it’s not that much.

I’ve heard so much about Caramoan that it has been on my bucketlist for ages. Will really need to convince my husband to go as I know long hours of travel doesn’t really suit him. LOL. But I think Caramoan is very much worth the long hours! 🙂

I’m planning to visit caramoan one on my bucket list .Thanks for the information 3 days wow gotta go now.

You should go now. haha! Enjoy your trip!

Sir kevin may i ask what month kayo nagtour sa Caramoan? Thanks a lot!!! Hoping for you rply

CARAMOAN ISLANDS: 2D1N Budget Travel Guide + Itinerary To The Enchanting Islands Of Survivors

Caramoan at a glance.

Survivor has been around since I was a teen. It’s the first reality TV series to open my eyes to the wonders of the world and got me aching to see them. Not only did the series show me how it is to live amidst challenges but it made me dream my own adventures, 6-pack abs, perfect hair, tan and all (LMAO). There is no denying that the series showcased some of the most jaw dropping and enchanting destinations in the world. Their beauty is totally raw and riveting which made the show all the more interesting. Surprisingly, among these destinations, two are found in the Philippines. First is Palaui Island , then the other is Caramoan Islands.

Caramoan Islands just gave us another reason to visit the gorgeous Bicolandia. It reminds us that other than the majestic Mayon Volcano and their delicious spicy dishes, the province is also home to some of the most stunning and pristine islands. Among them is Calaguas Islands which is as dreamy as Boracay , and then there’s Caramoan Islands which just took the game to the next level having the Survivor Series on its belt. My curiosity for this place was insatiable and having to wait for over a decade to finally visit didn’t help at all. Gladly, Caramoan didn’t disappoint and my heart couldn’t have been more grateful.

GETTING TO KNOW THE ISLANDS OF CARAMOAN

The waters of Caramoan is dotted by more than 10 gorgeous islands but only about 7 of them are available for touring most of the time. The tour is also divided into two parts, the short and the long tours. Let me share with you the islands we visited.

  • Guinahoan Island – Who says you need to spend a fortune to experience the feels that rolling hills and thundering coastal rapids emanate? Here in Caramoan, Guinahoan is just the perfect island if you are looking to experience that much coveted Batanes-feels.
  • Manlawi Island – If you just can’t get enough of that patch of sand to frolic in under the sun, then you might find comfort in Manlawi Island and its vast sandbar. This island is just a little difficult though as the sandbar only appears during low tide. However, don’t fret if you happen to miss it as the alternative is even more alluring. With several cottages floating over a pool of clear turquoise water, you are surely in for a treat as if you are in The Maldives.
  • Cotivas Island & Sandbar – You’ll eventually get your share of sugary white sands in Cotivas Island as its sandbar is not going away no matter what time of the day. Here, you’ll get to enjoy a sumptuous meal and a bottle or two of beer while being entertained by the shimmering blue waters around.
  • Sabitang Laya – Jagged limestone rock formations surrounding clear blue waters will surely remind you of Coron and El Nido but Caramoan has Sabitang Laya Island for that matter. This island is dubbed as the “Survivor Island” since this is the very island being used by the show.
  • Lahus Island – Things are definitely better when they come in two. Yeah? In Lahus Island, you’ll get to enjoy two beaches at the same time. The island is technically a sandbar connecting two limestone hills which created two different shores for you to enjoy.
  • Matukad Island – We all have a thing of looking for powdery white sands in any beach that we go to. It’s like the very standard we have much to our fondness of Boracay which have no doubt set the bar high. In Caramoan, Matukad is your kind of island if you long to feel that velvety and silky smooth sands against your feet. It also features a lagoon which is home to an enchanted bangus.
  • Cagbanilad & Minalahos Islands – These two islands feature beautiful white sand beaches bound by limestone rocks. However, what I found more interesting are the waters in between these two which is home to some colorful corals and various fishes and is perfect if you love to snorkel.

OUR 2D1N CARAMOAN ITINERARY

We left Manila 5PM Friday. You might think it was kind of early but it’s actually the ideal departure time in order to reach Caramoan before 6AM. We only had two days to enjoy the islands so we might as well make the most out of it and see them all. For this trip, we had the tour, accommodation and food arranged with a local coordinator, Whing Fernandez. Here’s how it all went down.

Day 1 - A Day Filled With So Many Beautiful Islands

We arrived in Caramoan at 5:30AM. At 6AM, we met with Kuya Whing and went to settle our stuff in our humble accommodation. A few minutes later, we had breakfast at a nearby eatery and finally at 8AM, the island hopping tour began. We visited Guinahoan Island first where we trekked for a good 10 minutes to see the lighthouse and the promising Batanes-like views. A little over an hour, we went down and had a quick snack. We then proceed to Manlawi Sandbar. The water had already risen and the sandbar had transformed into a vast pool of shimmering blue dotted by floating cottages. It was still a delightful sight though, that we spent a good time snapping photos in our camera. We then proceed to our third island, Cotivas, where we had lunch.

We had a filling and sumptuous lunch, consists of crabs, prawns, fish and lots of steamed rice, while basking at the crystal blue waters surrounding Cotivas Island. We then went for a dip under the midday sun for one good hour before we headed out to see the next island. Lahus Island was beautiful however it was a little crowded for our taste that we didn’t stay long. We instead went to Matukad Island and here spent most of our time relishing the finest of its sands and the scenic views around. Some of my friends went trekking to see the lagoon while I stayed and enjoyed eating halo-halo as I tried to get enough of the goodness of Matukad Island. It was about 4PM when we left Matukad and went to see our last two islands which were also amazing however we chose to spend the rest of the tour snorkeling.

I can’t believe how abundant were waters in Caramoan. I was in total awe while swimming among the colorful fishes of various kinds. There were lots of sea stars and urchins too. The corals weren’t as colorful as I hoped they would be but they sure gave me the chills that I only feel while immersed in raw and untouched environment. If only the current weren’t as rough as they were, I would have loved to swim longer but it was getting late and we badly needed to head back to the town before the seas become wild. It was almost sundown when we finished the tour. I somehow felt discontent and craving for more. The tour seemed a bit rush but it was worth it. Guess, we just need to stay longer next time.

Day 2 - Encounter With A 400-Year Old Church & Farewell Caramoan

The next day we woke up to a delicious breakfast consist of sunny eggs, sausages, dried fish, garlic rice and coffee. When we finished, our friends went to shower and some went to pack up their stuff. I thought waiting for my turn to shower would take a while so I instead went for a stroll. I walked to the far end of the beach where the sea meets the river. The morning breeze was calming. The views were spectacular! I couldn’t help but wonder what else could we do should we decide to stay longer. Last night’s drinking and videoke sesh left me smiling from ear to ear. “I’m with an amazing company,” I thought. If only we were not limited to weekend trips, I would really love to spend more time with them.

We checked out of the inn and went to see an old church at 9AM. It was a 400-yr old church they say. I was blown away when I finally got to see it. The mere sight of it instantly took me back in time, to an era when life was simple and traditions were a thing. I imagined those times when women used to wear elegant ternos and hide their giggles behind their colorful fans. I couldn’t help but entertain myself with a thought of an epic romance, like Romeo and Juliet sans the tragedy, taking place in this old church like it was their safe haven or their sweet little piece of paradise. Haha! I gotta hand it over to St. Michael Church as it was really beautiful to be toying with my imagination about silly romance.

Leaving was such a bum. It’s probably one of the most awful feelings and turns out, I wasn’t the only one. We all never wanna leave but we didn’t have a choice. Caramoan is one of life’s simple joys but our reality is in Manila. Work is in Manila. Oh well! So much for adulting , bills and the responsibilities that we could only sigh as we bid Caramoan goodbye, with hopes of seeing it again. Soon.

HOW TO GO TO CARAMOAN

Useful travel tips.

  • It’s important to arrange your tour, accommodation and food with a local coordinator ahead, especially if you’re going there on a limited time. Kuya Whing Fernandez will be able to take care of that for you.
  • If you’re going there with your group of maybe 10 people, renting a van would be more convenient. Total travel time would be cut short to 10 hours or less.
  • Drive carefully as the roads leading to Paniman, Caramoan are a bit treacherous especially during the night. There are bumps as some parts have holes or are totally destroyed.
  • If you only have a weekend to spare for Caramoan, you should leave Manila and start your travel at 4PM Friday, so you would arrive in Paniman before 6AM, giving you time to settle your stuff and eat breakfast before going on your island hopping.
  • The island hopping tour is divided in two with different touring rates. First is the short tour which includes the nearest islands, Matukad, Lahus, Cagbanilad and Minalahos. The other is the long tour for the islands Guinahoan, Manlawi, Sabitang Laya and Cotivas. You can also club these islands in a one day tour.
  • During days with rough and unfriendly seas, island hopping tour may be suspended. Only when the gale warning is lifted will you be allowed to go on tour.
  • Gota Village is one spot you don’t wanna miss while in Caramoan. It’s a little pricey but it is worth the experience. Note that it will sometimes be off-limits during months when it is being used by the survivor franchise.
  • Caramoan is not just about beautiful islands. You can also have an adventure exploring the pristine Manapot River and Umang Cave.
  • Take the time to explore the town of Caramoan. Don’t miss a visit to the St. Michael The Archangel Church. This awesome piece of architecture built in the 1600s screams so much history and nostalgia.

Caramoan Travel Guide: Tourism Gem of Camarines Sur

Caramoan

About Caramoan

Caramoan is a paradise in the farthest coast of Camarines Sur, hidden in underdeveloped and rural soil where white sand beaches, limestone cliffs, beautiful and islets are common scenery.

A peninsular town, Caramoan is a group of islands and islets scattered in the Pacific Ocean, endowed with nature’s beauty and preserved by its seclusion.

Caramoan

The place is made famous by the hit global reality show franchise “Survivor” and became a favorite shooting location due to numerous islands with fine white sand, lagoons, caves, limestone cliffs and rocks, and rich marine life that give a new definition to an island experience. But even before the “Survivor” series, there was already Caramoan – beautifully unspoiled and unexploited.

With its natural beauty and rich history, Caramoan stands proud as a real tourism gem of Bicolandia that holds a promise of a perfect tropical island adventure!

Come south! Cam Sur! Caramoan!

3 Days Caramoan Itinerary – Solo DIY Tips & Guide

The commute to Caramoan takes at least four hours from Naga City, Camarines Sur. Two hours land trip from Naga City to Sabang Beach and another two-hour ferry (pumpboat) ride going to Guijalo Port in Caramoan. After quick morning tour of Naga City, I took a tricycle to the FILCAB terminal located across SM City Naga. The (L300) van left Naga City at 8:15am and arrived in Barrio Sabang, San Jose, Camarines Sur by 10am. Sabang Beach was just a couple of steps from where the van dropped us off. Looking around the long gray sand beach, it was easy to find the makeshift ferry waiting area since many of the passengers were already huddled together in that section of the beach.

Naga City to Barrio Sabang, San Jose, Camarines Sur

Ferry from sabang beach to guijalo port, caramoan.

I waited for another 45 minutes until the ferry boat arrived in Sabang. The beach went into chaos as the arriving passengers were about to disembark. Several porters went into a frenzy as they rushed to the side of the boat and boisterously tried to catch the attention of the alighting passengers. As soon as the first passenger got off, I realized what was happening. Since the boat was still a couple of meters from the beach (in waist deep waters), the passengers had to be carried over the shoulder of the porters in order to avoid getting wet. Oh Shit! It meant we also had to do it to get on the boat.

I was anxiously standing at the shoreline not sure how to go about the porter selection process. Apparently, one of the porters had already chosen me and signaled that he had to load my backpack on the boat first. On the off chance that he’d get out balanced, I’d have all of my stuff wet including a few electronic devices. Seeing him carrying my bag above his head and wading through the wait-deep waters was excruciating enough, now, I’d have to undergo the ordeal myself. I wasn’t really afraid to get wet … it was my camera, which I carry on my sling bag, I was worried about. It’s like … the most expensive thing I own, and I’d saved up months for it. Anyways, when the porter got in front of me, he turned the other way and bent on one knee (kinda like the typical position during an engagement proposal … only backwards). I positioned both of my legs over his shoulders with his head, you know, between my thighs. The porter then stood up and struggled a bit to keep balance. It was so awkward to be carried by some random dude like that. The experience was quite emasculating :(

Finding a place to stay in Caramoan

Most tourists stay at the town center or “centro” of Caramoan. It’s in an inconvenient location for most since it’s landlocked and requires a tricycle/single motorcycle ride to get to Bikal Beach and Paniman Beach, the main jump-off points to the Caramoan Islands. I stayed at Rex Tourist Inn after reading a lot of positive online reviews. They have single rooms rented out for P300 per night (fan-cooled; shared TB). I loved my stay at Rex Tourist Inn since they had free WiFi. I wanted to visit Lake Bulusan on my last day in Bicol … it was a last minute decision and I didn’t know how to get there. Having internet access helped a lot :D

I also had my laundry done there for P80 (my clothes were well under 1 kilo, so I guess it’s their minimum rate). I give Rex Tourist Inn my “highly recommended for budget travelers” stamp!

Around Caramoan Centro

I had (late) lunch at a carinderia (local eatery) named Lutong Bahay located near Rex Tourist Inn. It ate there the whole time I was in Caramoan since it was cheap. A meal costs only around P50. Their Bicol Express was my daily staple :) It was nice to be able to eat the more authentic version of Bicol Express …. oh wait! Of course, it has to be authentic, I was still in Bicol. Their Bicol Express was kinda different from the ones I tasted in Legazpi and Naga, though.

Since I arrived in Caramoan late in the afternoon and didn’t notice any tourist groups during the ferry ride, it seemed unlikely that I would find a group, who’d be willing to let me join their island hopping tour of the islands. I walked around town hoping to find other tourists but didn’t find any  … probably because I went to Caramoan during low season (on a weekday) and the tourists that arrived that day were probably already off in the islands.

Booking an Island Hopping Tour of Caramoan Islands

I eventually inquired at one of the souvenir shops in town about the island hopping tours. They told me they could arrange the tour for me since the shop owner’s father owns a boat at Paniman Beach. There are two main island groups in Caramoan. I’m not sure what their formal names are but they’re known as the “Matukad Island Group” and the “Manlawi/Sabitang Laya Island Group.” Both are located at a considerable distance from each other (probably 30 minutes by boat). Bikal Beach, situated at the mainland is the main jump-off point to Manlawi/Sabitang Laya Island Group. While Paniman Beach is the main jump-off point to Matukad Island Group.

I was quoted a rate of P1,500 to visit the “Matukad group of islands,” P2,000 for “Sabitang Laya/Manlawi island group,” and P3,000 to visit 9 islands covering both island groups. My gosh, so expensive considering I’d have to pay for everything myself. Of course, I couldn’t leave Caramoan without going to any of its famed islands. I hope I still have enough cash to get back to the city … there aren’t any ATMs in Caramoan if I spent too much.

It was already mid-afternoon, too late to go island hopping. Spent two nights in Caramoan so I’d have a full day for the island hopping the next day.

DIY trip to Camarines Sur Tips

  • Naga City to Sabang Beach, San Jose, Camarines Sur Van (2 hours) – P90 per person
  • Tip for the porter “shoulder back ride” – P25 per person(no set rate, tip as you please)
  • Guijalo Port to Caramoan Centro Tricycle – P50 per person(not sure how much the actual fare was but I think I saw the locals paying P20/P30 only)
  • Single fan room with shared TB – P300 per night (x2 nights = P600)
  • Laundry – P80 (minimum)
  • Bicol Express + 2 rice – P40
  • Pork Steak + 1 rice + coke  – P40
  • Fried Chicken + 1 rice (packed lunch for island hopping tour) – P60 (x2 incase I get too hungry, haha = P120)
  • Caramoan souvenir t-shirt – P170
  • Whole day Caramoan island hopping tour – P1,500 (Matukad group of islands)
  • Roundtrip single motorcycle (habal-habal) ride to Paniman Beach from Caramoan Centro – P200
  • Read more about Caramoan Islands in Camarines Sur, Philippines

Don’t leave yet. There’s more!
