Cruise Stateroom Categories Explained

One of the biggest challenges to booking a cruise is making sure you wind up in the stateroom you want. Whether you’re taking your first cruise or your 100th, it’s easy to get confused… especially when looking at the seemingly random number/letter combinations indicating the various stateroom types.

Because there’s no industry-wide standard, the designations are different for each fleet. Sometimes, they vary from ship to ship within the same cruise line.

So, what do you need to know about categories and what they mean? Let’s break it down.

the interior of staterooms in a cruise ship

On nearly every cruise line, there are four basic stateroom categories. (This does not include exclusive areas, often referred to as ship-within-a-ship categories, such as Norwegian’s Haven or MSC’s Yacht Club.)

Those four categories are:

Just to make things more confusing, these categories are almost always subdivided.

For example, Norwegian offers studios, which are inside cabins designed for single passengers, and several Royal Caribbean ships feature inside staterooms with “virtual” balconies, which, via LED screens, give occupants a simulated real-time view of the outside world.

What You Need To Know

Anthem Balcony stateroom

Booking a cabin on a cruise ship is a lot like booking a hotel room. In both cases, the better the location, the more you’re going to pay. If a hotel is in the heart of the city and near all of its attractions, you’re going to pay more than one outside of town.

Similarly, if a cabin is centrally located on the ship, you’ll pay more. Midship balconies will usually cost more than those located forward or aft. Of course, as with everything, there are exceptions.

Over the past few years, aft-facing balconies — generally larger and with amazing views of the ship’s wake — have become wildly popular and, as a result, among the pricier cabins in the category.

For example, Carnival Cruise Line uses a number to indicate the type of cabin (inside, oceanview, or balcony) and a letter to indicate how desirable the associated location is. Category 7A would be an obstructed balcony, while category 7N would be an extended balcony.

While the various lines each use their own designations, the basic idea is the same.

How To Find Your Perfect Cabin

balcony stateroom interior

You’re spending a pretty penny on the cruise, so you want to make sure you wind up in exactly the right cruise stateroom. For some, that will mean getting a cheaper interior room — arguing that it’s just a place to sleep — in order to have more money to spend elsewhere.

Others can’t imagine setting sail without a balcony on which to sit and enjoy the view.

Once you’ve determined exactly what your priority is category-wise, go to the section of your cruise line’s website showing deck plans. Keep the deck plans open in a separate window as you’re perusing and pricing the options.

While doing so, keep the following in mind:

  • Once you’ve figured out the type of cabin you want, use the deck plans to narrow down your choice of actual room. See what’s above and below to avoid sleeping atop a nightclub or beneath a bowling alley, either of which could mean late-night disturbances.
  • Assume that the room you book is the one you’ll wind up in rather than hoping for an upgrade. They do happen, but if it doesn’t, you’ll be stuck in a room that you didn’t actually want in the first place.
  • Once you’ve put down a deposit, make sure to set an alert so that if the price drops, you can look into the possibility of rebooking the room at the new price or perhaps getting some on-board credit. For details on how to set a price-drop alert, click here .

Door decorations on cruises: How to get creative in your cabin corridor

Megan duBois

You've likely walked down the endless cabin corridors on a cruise ship only to find that every door looks exactly the same. While it can be challenging to remember your room number (I'm one of those people who's lost for the first few days of a cruise), one way to remember which room is yours is by decorating your door.

If you've ever sailed on Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean or Carnival Cruise Line, you might have even passed some cruise door decorations like magnets, signs and small banners and thought about doing the same on your next cruise. It's a great idea since decorations are an easy way to know which room is yours, plus it adds a little pizzazz to the vibe in the hallways.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If you've been inspired by cruise ship neighbors and plan to decorate on your next cruise, you should know a few key things before you plan your hallway masterpiece. Read on to learn which cruise lines allow decorations, which decorations are best and where to find the best cruise door decoration ideas.

Which lines allow cruise door decorations?

carnival cruise room numbers

Not all cruise lines allow door decorations. For the lines that do, here are their basic decorating rules.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line allows door decorations as long as they're made from fire-retardant materials. Decorations can only be placed on the cabin door and not on the adjacent hallway walls. Magnets or command strips are acceptable ways to hang decorations, but tape and glue are not. String lights are also not allowed.

I love going with a themed door when I'm sailing with Carnival. I try to think about what upcoming holidays are close to my sailing or where the cruise is sailing to. For example, if the cruise is heading to Mexico, I might try to find some taco and margarita magnets to put on my door to bring a bit of fun flair to the hallway.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean permits guests to decorate their cabin doors, but you should ensure that all decorations stay on the doors and not stray to a nearby wall. Decorations should not destroy the door in any way. If you want to decorate your door while on a Royal Caribbean cruise, simple magnets are best.

I try to find decorations that fit the lively party vibe of Royal Caribbean ships. Party banners that can be hung with magnets are always a hit. I also love finding fringe curtains and cutting them to the size of my door to add a little sparkle and shine to my cabin entry.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line passengers can decorate their doors but cannot use adhesive to affix the decorations. Otherwise, Disney is fairly open to all types of door decorations. Decorative magnets or hanging signs with magnetic hooks are a popular choice.

Unfortunately, Concierge rooms on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have wooden doors, so magnets will not stick. If you've booked one of these rooms, you'll be limited as to how you can decorate.

Many Disney Cruise Line decorations take their inspiration from the huge collection of Disney characters and movies. In the past, I've seen everything from The Muppets and "Star Wars" characters to Mickey Mouse and Pixar decorations on doors.

A particularly Disney trend is to attach a magnetic pin board to your door. Fellow cruisers will pick up one of your pins and leave behind one of their own. I've gotten some really fun pins from international parks this way. On holiday cruises, generous travelers will even attach small gift bags to their doors and passersby can help themselves to a holiday treat.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises allows door decorations, and doors are often decorated for celebrations like birthdays, anniversaries and graduations. Like all the other lines, Princess Cruises prohibits decorations that might damage the door, so the use of adhesives to stick decorations to the door is a no-go here.

Princess leans into its connection with "The Love Boat," so you might want to find decoration inspiration from the 1970s sitcom. Print out pictures of characters, the ship and the logo, then laminate and stick a magnet to each piece and you're set to sail.

Holland America

Holland America also allows guests to decorate their doors but offers no rules about the size or placement of the decorations. The brand does ask its guests not to display any inappropriate decorations.

The best decorations for a cruise with Holland America are themed around the cruising lifestyle, with magnets that show off your favorite cocktail, trivia champion status or any big milestone celebrations you'll be having while on board.

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises does allow door decorations as long as they are family-friendly. If I had an upcoming sailing on MSC, I would find some decorations that showcased any celebrations like birthdays or anniversaries I might be celebrating or some cute cruise magnets or banners.

Celebrity Cruises

Decorating cabin doors is less common on Celebrity Cruises than its sister company, Royal Caribbean, but the cruise line does still allow decorations. One thing to keep in mind if you're decorating your cabin door on Celebrity is that nothing should damage the door in any way.

If you want to decorate with something that's on theme for a Celebrity cruise, consider decorating with martini magnets, which are right in line with the brand's iconic Martini Bar.

Which cruise lines do not allow door decorations?

carnival cruise room numbers

Norwegian Cruise Line

Leave your cruise door decorations at home if you're sailing on Norwegian Cruise Line , as it has banned door decorations on all ships. The line cites the safety of guests and crew because many cruise door decorations can be a fire hazard.

Virgin Voyages

According to the Virgin Voyages cabin FAQ, "We think our lady ships look fabulous as they are, and door decorations inevitably lead to unsightly damage." So, no, you cannot use cruise door decorations on any of the ships in the Virgin Voyages fleet.

Which types of cruise door decorations are best?

To ensure you comply with the majority of the cruise line's door decoration policies, try to find decorations that are either magnetic or can be hung with magnetic hooks. None of the decorations should leave a residue on the door. The best decorations are easy to pack, lightweight and won't get in the way of your room steward as they enter your cabin.

Which types of cruise door decorations should you leave at home?

Leave string lights, crepe paper, garlands and cumbersome decorations at home. Cruise door decorations that might get in the way of your room steward or other guests should also be left behind. Do not pack any decorations that are so large they extend beyond the door or need to be attached to the hallway panels. Most cruise lines only allow decorations on the actual door of your cabin.

What should you keep in mind when packing decorations?

carnival cruise room numbers

Think about space when picking and packing your cruise door decorations. I love bringing magnets that can lie flat in my suitcase but look great on my cabin door. If you're flying to your cruise embarkation port, you'll need to think about size and weight. You don't want heavy decorations that would weigh down your bag. For example, big wooden signs or pinboards that could be held up by magnets might look cute on your door, but they can also weigh down your suitcase.

If you want to decorate your cabin door as soon as you board, you should pack your decorations in your carry-on bag.

Where do you find cruise door decoration ideas?

If you're looking for decoration inspiration, Pinterest is a great place to start. You'll find thousands of ideas for door decorations on the site. You can filter your selection further by putting the cruise line name into the search bar. For example, if you're going on a Carnival cruise, search "cruise door decorations carnival cruise line" to get ship-specific ideas.

I also love finding ideas on Etsy because I can see and buy decorations right away. Hundreds of Etsy shops sell cruise door decorations, but buy them early so they arrive in time for your vacation. Also, read reviews before you place an order because some shops offer higher-quality products than others.

You can also find acceptable door decorations at party stores, dollar stores or the Target Dollar Spot. If you're looking for decorations where you live, you can find great cruise decorations with a tropical vibe during the spring and summer months.

Do cruise lines sell decorations on board or online?

Some cruise lines sell door and cabin decorations online before a cruise begins and on board once you've embarked. These include Disney Cruise Line , Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line . If you plan on buying your decorations online or on the ship, be sure you have plenty of room in your suitcase to bring them back home with you, too. The decoration package might include souvenir pillowcases, towels and picture frames, as well as easier-to-pack magnets.

Do you have to decorate your door on a cruise?

carnival cruise room numbers

No cruise line requires you to decorate your door, but joining in the fun of decorating can enhance your overall cruise experience, especially on certain cruise lines. If you're sailing with Disney Cruise Line or Carnival Cruise Line, you'll find that many doors in the cabin hallways are decorated. Disney cruise door decorations can range in style from large magnets featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse to smaller decorations that showcase a family's personality and interests or even themed decorations to match a holiday-based cruise, birthday or anniversary celebration.

For Carnival cruise door decorations, the majority of the options tend to lean more into the fun party vibe on board Carnival's ships. You'll find that many of the doors are covered in cocktail glass magnets and have cute signs that say something about a celebration or being on vacation mode.

Carnival Cruise Line shares important advice for all cruisers

O nce you book a cruise, you have really just started the journey. For a land-based vacation, aside from checking in for your flights, there's not much prep work you need to do before you leave.

You might want to make dinner reservations or reserve other aspects of your trip that could sell out, but you generally don't have to. When you book a cruise, it's important to take care of a number of things ahead of time.

Related: Carnival quietly got rid of a passenger favorite (and won't bring it back)

Most purchases, for example, are cheaper if you book them in advance. Everything from drink packages to shore excursions, specialty dining, and internet access almost always costs less if you book it before your cruise.

In addition, you should be vigilant for sales, which are often offered around major holidays. In general, on major cruise lines, you can cancel a booked item and rebook it if the price drops.

Some popular excursions can also sell out, as can certain limited-capacity experiences like the Royal Caribbean Empire Supper Club on Icon of the Seas and the new Royal Railway on Utopia of the Seas.

Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald recently found a subtle way to offer passengers from every cruise line a tip that can enhance your vacation which many cruisers may not have known about.

Do this and you get more cruise

Both Carnival  ( CCL )  and Royal Caribbean  ( RCL )  offer slightly different schedules for check-in for your cruise, but both use midnight eastern as the time when check-in begins.

"You can check in on the app beginning 45 days in advance and up to the morning of your sailing," Royal Caribbean shared on its website. "In the app, you will scan your passport, upload your security photo, and answer the required health questions to receive your mobile boarding pass."

The health questions are not available until 24 hours before your sailing.

Carnival has a tighter timeline.

"Online Check-in can be accessed within 14 days prior to sailing and no later than midnight (eastern time) prior to the sailing date," Carnival posted on its website.

Heald offered a subtle hint about check-in on his Facebook page which was met with over 5,600 comments — essentially an awful lot of people sharing their own advice.

"Have you ever stayed awake until midnight to check in for your cruise?" Heald wrote.

Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter to save money on your next (or your first) cruise.

Why checking into your cruise early matters

While it can vary by port and sailing, both Royal Caribbean and Carnival allow passengers to pick a boarding time. The earlier your time, the sooner you get on the ship, and that can mean a couple extra hours of vacation.

Boarding on many sailings begins around 10:30 a.m. with the last appointments coming a 3 p.m. That's a 3 1/2 hour difference, and many respondents to Heald's post think it's a good idea to make sure you get an early boarding appointment.

Most of the comments were simple with many simply saying "every time," or "yes." Others showed how important they think checking in as soon as possible is.

"Yes. Even set an alarm just in case I fell asleep," wrote Karen Hollinger.

Ellen Monaghan Rios has become a recent convert to checking in at midnight.

"Yes, just did for the first time for our cruise last week and I’ll be doing it every time! We got 10:30 check-in, hardly had to wait in each line (and this was NY), got on in time to eat in a not-crowded Lido, get the extra keys we needed, muster, and check out the entire ship before we could get into our cabins at 1:30," she shared.

ALSO READ: Top travel agents share how to get the best price on your cruise

There were, however, a few people who suggested a different strategy rather than getting on the ship as early as possible.

"Not anymore, I like late check-in, then you walk right on the ship and cabins are ready at 1:30," posted Lu Anne Paquin.

Life jackets are used in cases of emergency only (not at the ship pools). Lifejackets are located within passenger/crew cabins (in the closet). They are available in 3 sizes – adult, child, and infant. Each of the cabins has a safe (located in the closet) with approx dimensions (inches/centimeters) – width (10/25), height (9/23) and depth (8/20). Cabin safes can be accessed by any magnetic strip card. It is advisable not to use a valid credit card (or driver’s license), but an old expired card (or some rewards card) instead. Some safes are with a keypad (personal code). Safes can be opened also by the ship’s security.

All cabin and suite mini-bars are stocked with premium liquors ($6-9,25), beer ($6,25), energy drinks ($5), soft soda/beverages ($2), bottled water ($3,75). In-cabin babysitting is not available (read more at Camp Ocean below). All laundry machines are coinless (can be operated using S&S cards only). While the ship is in port, washing machines are closed (only dryers and irons can be used). You Can Get Married on a Cruise Ship — Here's How to Plan Your Nautical Wedding

Here's what you need to know about tying the knot at sea.

Wedding Packages and Services

Planning the ceremony and reception, guest accommodations and activities, tips for planning a cruise wedding.

Danevski/Getty Images

If you and your future spouse love to set sail and explore new locales, getting married at sea may be the perfect option for your wedding — and it comes with plenty of built-in benefits and amenities. What’s more, explains T+L A-List travel advisor and Q Cruise + Travel president Rob Clabbers, “The advantage of a wedding on a ship is that a lot of amenities and facilities are available — albeit it an extra charge in some cases: beautiful spaces, photographers, musicians, DJs, flowers, wedding assistants, bars and restaurants, the option to arrange a separate meal/buffet for your guests, a salon and spa to get ready for a ceremony, and, of course, a ‘built-in’ honeymoon.” Whether you’re dreaming of an intimate elopement or a larger celebration, we tapped several experts to provide insight on everything you need to know about cruise weddings, including the costs, the logistics, accommodations and amenities, and more.

What to Know

kieferpix/Getty Images

Once you’ve officially decided to say “I do” at sea, there are several factors to keep in mind. “At a minimum,” says Farah Barhorst, a director at Holland America Line , “couples should know where, when, and how they want to get married, in addition to the number of guests they would like in attendance.” She notes that many cruise lines put limits on how many visitors can board the ship who aren't sailing its full itinerary, so knowing how many guests plan to join you for your wedding only is crucial. Of course, couples should also consider their desired wedding location as, per the pro, “guest capacity is also limited based on the destination or port.”

As Clabbers explains, you also need to consider the laws of both the country where you'll be located when you get married and the country that runs your ship. “Many cruise ships are registered in the Bahamas, Bermuda, or Malta,” Clabbers notes, meaning “the laws of [that] specific country would apply to any ceremonies performed on board once the ship is in international waters.” There may then be limits on where same-sex ceremonies can take place. “Since the Bahamas and Bermuda, for example, don’t recognize same-sex marriage, same-sex couples can’t get legally married at sea on ships registered in those countries. They could potentially get married while in port in the U.S.A. or certain places in Europe,” he says.

For these and other reasons, Keith Willard , a wedding planner specializing in destination weddings, stresses the importance of planning ahead. "The first thing that many overlook is the marriage certificate itself," he says. "The easiest thing to do is to get a marriage license within 60 days of your wedding and bring it with you.” Stacey Johnston , a travel advisor at Marvelous Mouse Travels, echoes these sentiments, explaining that “you will need to arrange for the marriage license ahead of your cruise from the port or the departure location depending on where you are getting married.”

To avoid mishaps with locations and licenses, some couples choose to have a wedding celebration on a cruise but get legally married elsewhere. On a Holland America Line ship, for instance, “The captain can perform a ‘symbolic’ ceremony that is not legally binding,” says Barhorst. If you want the wedding-at-sea experience with fewer logistical headaches, a compromise like this may be for you.

Nadtochiy/Getty Images

According to Clabbers, “Many cruise lines that offer weddings will provide a range of packages to choose from, with ceremonies from two to over 100 attendees that may include the services from the officiant, a celebration venue, recorded or live music, a cake, Champagne or other beverages for guests, a dinner for the wedding couple, and other extras.” To provide to-be-weds with a better idea of what to expect, we’ve compiled a few packages from several cruise lines.

Holland America Line

Holland America Line currently offers a handful of wedding packages , including the Symbolic at Sea Package, which, per Barhorst, includes a non-legal ceremony performed by the captain or an officer; coordination by both onboard and pre-cruise wedding coordinators; recorded ceremony music; a keepsake wedding certificate; basic photography service, including one 8” x 10” photo of choice and a commemorative wedding album; sparkling wine; a nine-inch wedding cake; and a bridal bouquet with a dozen roses and a matching groom’s boutonniere. The Anchors Away Package includes all of the above but with a legal ceremony (led by a non-denominational officiant), as well as priority check-in for the couple during embarkation. Lastly, couples craving a true destination wedding can book the Ashore Package, which “lets couples officially tie the knot on a beach, garden, or glacier location,” says Barhorst. “A seasonal bridal bouquet and boutonniere will be provided in addition to a pre-cruise and ashore wedding coordinator to ensure all runs smoothly.”

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises offers three distinct packages to choose from via its Princess Perfect Weddings department. The Perfect Pair Package includes the couple and up to two guests, while the ceremony-only package, aptly named Timeless Ceremony at Sea, includes the couple and up to eight guests. Lastly, the Timeless Wedding at Sea package is the line's most elaborate. It comes with a ceremony and a reception for the couple and up to 18 guests, plus extras like salon services and specialty dining reservations for the bride and groom. All three Princess packages include fresh florals, photography, and an indoor or outdoor ceremony officiated by the ship’s captain.

Margaritaville at Sea

Margaritaville at Sea launched in April 2022 and offers warm-weather sailings from Palm Beach and Tampa. It has three aptly named wedding packages : Paradise, Elation, and Bliss. Paradise is the most extravagant, offering live music, full photography services, and an upgraded venue complete with panoramic views. Elation is the mid-range option, with a reception dinner, DJ services, and ceremony photography, and Bliss serves as the line’s basic package for intimate soirees. At all three levels, couples enjoy perks like a personal wedding coordinator, an officiant, a keepsake wedding certificate, a bridal bouquet and matching boutonniere, priority check-in, dinner at the onboard steakhouse, and a wedding cake.

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship ocean line has four wedding packages , including the Vows at Sea Package, which allows couples to choose from an array of onboard venues and includes dinner for two at a specialty restaurant, a bottle of bubbly, special stateroom decor, and more. With the Embark on Romance Package, you can invite sailing and non-sailing guests to watch you tie the knot with a ceremony on embarkation day, which includes many of the aforementioned amenities plus priority check-in for the couple. The smallest at-sea package, Intimately Yours, includes a ceremony for the couple and up to 10 guests, while the Destinations I Do package is ideal for those who want a great on-land backdrop for their wedding. With Destinations I Do, couples get married either on board or on land while the ship is in port; transportation to and from the venue is included if you choose the on-land option.

Carnival Cruise Line

Another mega-ship ocean line, Carnival offers three wedding packages . The Signature Ceremony is the line's smallest but still offers plenty of perks: a ceremony for up to 10 guests (including the couple), pre-recorded ceremony music, a pre-cruise wedding planner, priority embarkation assistance, a local officiant, a keepsake wedding certificate, a cake, a sparkling wine toast, photography (plus a canvas print), shipboard decor, and a honeymoon dinner for the newlyweds. Service charges, which include gratuities, are also covered. Those looking to host an onboard reception following the ceremony can book the It’s a Celebration! package for a minimum of 20 guests, including the couple. Alternatively, say “I do” off the ship by booking the Love Ashore package, where couples can tie the knot in a dreamy beach or garden ceremony. For extra amenities, add on the Diamond Enhancement Package, which comes with perks like a mimosa-fueled breakfast, chocolate-covered strawberries delivered to the couple’s stateroom, a bottle of bubbly, a 30-minute couples massage, and more.

Disney Cruise Line

For a fairy-tale-worthy wedding at sea, Disney Cruise Line has you covered. Their standard cruise ceremony package includes up to 16 guests (excluding the couple), while food and drink services, florals, and entertainment can all be added on for an extra cost. Couples can also choose to get married off the ship at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. For more information, including specific venue options, visit the Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings and Honeymoons website .

As noted above, many cruise lines offer wedding coordinators to ensure everything runs smoothly so that you and your soon-to-be spouse can sit back, relax, and soak up the blissful, celebratory vibes. In terms of what to expect from the ceremony and what kind of venues are available, “There can be quite a variety,” says Clabbers. For example, “Some ships have a chapel or space dedicated to weddings and ceremonies; others use a lounge, restaurant, or private room.” Again, since this will all vary by the cruise line and/or the specific package you pick, your best bet is to do your research by combing through the wedding package offerings online or calling the company directly.

The same thing goes for receptions, explains Allison DePesa , a travel advisor with Marvelous Mouse Travels. For example, “You could opt for a dinner in a specialty restaurant or something more opulent in a main dining room, which would offer more space for guests and a DJ.” Willard also urges to-be-weds to remember that the time of their onboard reception will likely be “based on what the cruise line has available, which means the times may be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., or even 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.” He explains, “A traditional five-hour event with an hour ceremony on the cruise between the hours of 5 p.m. and midnight is almost never done for groups larger than 20 people.”

ParfonovaIuliia/Getty Images

Good news: Couples getting married on a cruise are privy to discounts and other perks. According to DePesa, “With as few as eight cabins, you qualify as a group with most cruise lines. You'll receive discounted rates, onboard credits, cocktail parties, etc., depending on the number of staterooms booked.” Barhorst notes that similar perks apply on Holland America, explaining that, if a couple books a group of eight staterooms for their wedding crew, they're “eligible to receive a stateroom category upgrade up to Suite level, completely complimentary.”

According to Johnston, when setting up your room block, it’s a good idea to offer several category options — she recommends reserving balcony, oceanview, and interior staterooms — “since your wedding guests may have a variety of budgetary ranges.” Also, says Willard, “Unlike a hotel room block, your cruise rate can fluctuate for your guests, so it is important to book early” since “the earlier you book, typically the better the price point.” Be sure to keep an eye on cut-off dates, though. Some cruise lines will deactivate contracted room-block rates and links a set time before the sailing (90 days, for instance), meaning guests booking after that point would be on their own to find a stateroom.

When it comes to onboard activities and programming, Willard says that “there are opportunities at every turn for shared group experiences.” For example, “Dining in the main dining hall can be for groups [of] up to 20 people per table," while groups of 30 or more may even be able to book whole private sections of the dining room. On the flip side, cruising is also great because everyone in the group — or, in this case, the wedding party — can do their own thing without being tied to a specific schedule. So, while some guests might prefer to lounge by the pool or relax in the spa, others may take advantage of other onboard amenities, like an escape room, laser tag, waterslides, and more, depending on the specific line and ship.

While standard wedding packages will vary depending on the cruise line and number of guests, Clabbers says they can “range from anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 and up,” and most of the advisors we spoke to concurred.

That said, budget-conscious couples can find a few under-$2,000 options, including the aforementioned Signature Ceremony package on Carnival and the Symbolic at Sea package on Holland America Line, both of which clock in at $1,800. Also — at least on Holland America Line — “seasonal price surcharges of $100 to $200 should also be taken into account during peak nuptial times and holidays, including Christmas Day, Valentine's Day, and the beginning of summer,” says Barhorst. Similarly, while some purposely intimate packages include only a small number of guests, extra guests can sometimes be added at a per-person price. Be sure to inquire about fees, too, particularly for on-shore events.

When budgeting for your cruise wedding, remember that “the cost of legal documentations and permits is extra and needs to be planned far in advance — at least 90 days but ideally more,” explains Clabbers. Sue Allen, a travel consultant at Destination Weddings Travel Group & Celebration Travel , expressed similar sentiments and noted that “legal weddings have an additional fee” compared to symbolic (or non-legal) ones.

Per the pro, “Marriage license fees for in-destination weddings can range from $200 to $700,” while a shipboard maritime license fee is around $900. Allen also cautions couples to be wary of non-refundable deposits. While the initial cruise price may be lower, “if something comes up and you are not able to travel, you lose your deposit or pay a fee to change your travel dates.” With that being said, it’s always a good idea to purchase cruise insurance .

Lastly, DePesa urges couples to keep in mind that “the wedding does not include the fare for the actual cruise.” In fact, the cruise fare(s) can vary drastically depending on the time of year, length of itinerary, and line. If you’re not sailing on a truly all-inclusive line, you and your guests can expect to pay extra for features such as Wi-Fi, specialty dining, and alcoholic beverages. You’ll also, of course, need to factor in airfare if you’re flying to the embarkation/disembarkation port(s).

Book early and plan ahead.

To secure the best prices for your stateroom block, Johnston recommends planning as early as possible. Willard agrees, telling T+L that cost-conscious couples should create their block at least a year out at minimum. Plus, he says, "Most of the cruise lines will provide incentives, as well.”

Also, as part of the planning process, DePesa advises couples to “get an idea of your guest list, get a sense of who can travel with you, what budgets are like, and what time of year that works best” to ensure you’re selecting a sailing that suits both your and your loved ones’ needs, preferences, and desires.

Keep an open mind and trust your coordinator.

“When planning a wedding at sea, a good practice would be to keep an open mind,” explains Barhorst. This, of course, goes hand-in-hand with putting your trust in the cruise wedding planner. That way, she says, “the less stressful (and easier) it will be for [the couple] to enjoy their time together during the sailing.”

Familiarize yourself with the legalities.

As previously mentioned, the legalities and specifics of a cruise wedding vary greatly depending on where the ship is registered, the port(s) of call, and more. With that in mind, DePesa recommends couples take the time to do some digging and understand the legal requirements to determine “if a symbolic ceremony might just make things easier.”

Decide if a cruise wedding is really for you.

Before going full speed ahead and booking a cruise wedding, it’s crucial to weigh the pros and cons to determine if these types of nuptials are truly what you want. What’s more, says Willard, “A cruise wedding isn't about you specifically outside of the ceremony itself.” Rather, “It's about the shared experience, and your guests may decide that there is something more interesting [to do] on one of the other days.” He also cautions that cruise weddings can mean fewer guests RSVPing yes due to factors like time commitment, budget restraints, and so on.

If you do decide to move forward with a cruise wedding, Barhorst says that “managing the wedding parties’ expectations is also advised, as the structure of cruise weddings differs from the traditional ceremony,”

From what I've read on these boards, your cabin number won't show up until the entire group has paid in full.

Someone will come along and correct me, if I'm wrong.

Bruce, not sure why your room number is not showing. Ours has been

showing on reservation for months. When do you sail? We could book

things as soon as we made final payment.

Something doesn't sound right here..........I'd make a call today.

However there used to be a cheat for this, not sure if it still works but you can try going into the Bon Voyage area and order something to your stateroom, it used to pop up in the box that asks for name and stateroom.

You don't have to complete the order, just go as far as to where the pop up is. They did revamp the site so I'm not sure if this works but it's worth a try!!!

Good luck, Carole

We have been paid in full for a good 2 months now. We sail 8/15/09.

The group PVP is new and told us the room numbers may never show. I know ours always showed on previous cruise's. I was sent a statement by our PVP yesterday and she said it won't show till paid in full. The statement showed a 209.00 credit. I called her back and she said after looking at it for 10 minutes oh yeah its paid in full and you have a $209.00 credit. Then she changes her story to the room numbers may never show up on the Carnival site. I am so confused now. She is nice but a airhead!

Nope got wine, cheese, and fruit and it still doesn't show my room number on the Carnival site. Do you work for Carnival and just wanted me to spend some money? LOL Just kidding!

lol they meant to pretend to purchase something for your cabin, not click thru and actually purchase it. hahhahahahahahah

It's just a way to verify your cabin #, not to really order.

Sorry about your wine and fruit purchase; maybe you could have tried with something cheaper...I thought that TBA only showed for Gty. cabins.

I think I would call and check just in case.

Hey Bruce are these the same cabins you have been having problems with all along. At least I think it was you - you had cabins and they changed ships and you were fighting to get them back together b/c the PVP forgot (OMG it's got to be the same girl) to put you on the new ship?

It has something to do with the fact that its a 'group'.:)

Maybe Host Randy will see this thread and give you an answer..!!:p

Not sure why your room number isn't showing. We booked our Cruise for July and it's not paid in full and our room number was showing the same night we booked it. I would call your PVP.

Yes its me! Got rooms close but not next to each other and got the 4 interiors we needed. Now I know why the situation is like it is....this PVP is a total newbie and she does not know much at all....should never put her in charge of group bookings. When ship was switched she probably never even looked at our booking. Even when I call her its awhile before she even gets back to me. My regular Carnival PVP is awesome, knows what he is doing and gets back to me right away. No more group bookings for me.

Our rooms also always showed within minutes of booking, even before paid in full.

JerseyShoreBruce -

I'm assuming that all members of your group are fully paid and that these are not Guarantee bookings (in which case they'll show as TBA when finally assigned) and that you booked specific cabins.

If so, you should be seeing specific cabins under MY RESERVATIONS. The Cabins should also be identified in your booking confirmations that you received when you booked and when you made Final Payments.

I'm thinking I'd either e-mail PVP and ask for resolution within a couple days and/or call 800 number and ask for Supv to straighten out. What you may uncover is that there's a "problem" with some member of the group that needs to be resolved!

Oh no, I'm so sorry!!! You could call BV department and cancel it, that would work too. Didn't it show your room number on it?

We are paid in full and personally picked our rooms with our PVP. I did get a email from Carnival with all our names, ages, and room numbers but we can't get them to show on our My Reservation Page when we log-in , it still states TBA. Some of our group wants to book excursions already and to pay there gratuities ahead of time. We have always done this before.

UpstateCruizer

Mine was showing up like that until just recently and it's now showing the actual cabin number. I was told this is how it's done for groups. This is for the April cruise. You can still book excursions etc when they are available for booking with the TBA listed. If you aren't able to yet it may be because you are too far out still.

JerseyShoreBruce you are having the worst luck with this cruise.

I am glad I won't be on the same ship as you;). If I was I would stay real close to the life boats.:D

We just assigned our rooms for a cruise in April. It was right after the last people in our group paid (me)...lol! Now I did have to register my booking number to get it to show up??

Thats the thing I paid for all 9 cabins myself about 2 months ago. So everything is paid off....even per the dizzy PVP.......just don't know why room doesn't show up on Carnival site......I sent my room a bon-voyage gift this morning:D

When I log on and go to My Cruise menu, then select My Reservation, everything comes up there, room number, booking number, ship, date.

I only have a deposit down, not paid in full.

Did you try that ?

Yes everything comes up but the room number.

Wow, that's odd. Sorry, I have no more ideas. Figured what worked on mine would work for you. You would think it would all work the same for everybody. :(

Sexual assault on the high seas: How to keep you and your family safe on vacation cruises

Portrait of C. A. Bridges

Two women on a Margaritaville At Sea Paradise  cruise to the Bahamas last May reported being sexually assaulted by a bartender they say pocketed one of their room keys and entered their room after they fell asleep.

It was, sadly, not an unusual event, according to a recent Business Insider report . While many millions of people every year enjoy the time of their lives on a magical sea journey, sexual assault aboard major cruise ships is the most commonly reported crime.

According to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation , there were more than 500 allegations of sex crimes on cruise ships between 2015 and 2022 and experts say the actual number could be much higher as victims may not feel comfortable coming forward.

Also not unusual: few real consequences. Lawsuits get dismissed, cruise lines settle (often with confidentiality agreements), employees involved usually get fired (but may try to hire on with other cruise lines), and plea deals get made. The bartender on the Margaritaville cruise, Hoobesh Dookhy, who allegedly assaulted one woman and then attacked the other, pleaded guilty to one count of abusive sexual content to avoid the more serious charge of sexual assault.

While your cabin steward and other crewmembers are friendly and helpful — and the majority of the many cruises that happen each year are incident-free — it's important to remember that you'll need to watch your own safety and advocate for your own personal well-being.

"Remember that all security personnel and crew are employed by the cruise line," the International Cruise Victims International (ICVI) warns. "Their employer's best interests will go ahead of yours."

Here are some tips to keep yourself and your family safe to have fun. Please note: being sexually assaulted is never the victim's fault. But there are steps you can take to reduce the possibility.

How to keep your room safe on a cruise

Your stateroom is the safe, peaceful, quiet haven during your trip where you can relax and rest up. Here's how to keep it secured.

  • Keep your door locked when you're in the room. If there's a deadbolt, use it, and consider other ways to secure it as long as you can open it quickly in case of emergency. You also can bring a doorstop, or ask your cabin steward for one.
  • Use the peephole to check anyone knocking before you open the door.
  • Pull your door shut when you leave and make sure you hear it click shut. Some cabin doors can stick.
  • If your stateroom has a balcony , keep that door locked when you leave the room, when the ship is in port, and while you sleep.
  • When entering your room , leave the door open so you have a way out while you check the bathroom and closets for intruders.

Drink responsibly while on a cruise

Cruises are a time to let go, and alcohol is often a big and eagerly anticipated part of that. However, overindulgence can cause you to make bad decisions or miss warning signs and you should use the same precautions you'd use in a bar on land.

  • Know your limits , and stick to them.
  • Avoid unlimited drinks packages , they encourage binging.
  • Stay with friends or family . Ideally, have one of you remain sober each night.
  • Don't let drinks out of your sight and don't accept drinks from strangers. Date rape drugs are easy to miss and DOT data shows that most sexual assaults on cruises happen from other passengers.
  • Be leery of offers to walk you back to your room. Stay with company you know well.
  • Ask for unopened bottles .

Man overboard! How easy is it to fall overboard on a cruise ship, and how can you survive?

Stay aware during a cruise as you would on land

You don't need to be paranoid. You're there to relax and have a good time and cruises are designed to make you forget about your worries, it's kind of the point of a cruise. But it's easy to assume everyone around you is friendly and safe when you're on vacation in what is essentially a small floating city. Be aware of your surroundings and take some basic precautions.

  • Keep your cruise card on you . Don't leave it lying around, and don't write your cabin number on it in case anyone finds it.
  • Don't mention your cabin number to other people or to crewmembers, unless they have a legitimate need for it.
  • Make friends with your cabin steward on the first day. They're more likely to notice if someone suspicious is trying to gain entry to your room.
  • Don't accept invitations to go to other passenger cabins alone, or to crew quarters or crew-only areas.
  • Keep an eye on children at all times . According to a Congressional report from 2013 , a third of all sexual assault victims on cruise ships are children and teens.
  • Stay with your party or loved ones. Avoid walking around alone, especially at night.
  • Get a cruise buddy. If you're cruising solo, make friends with another passenger so you can enjoy your vacation with pleasant company (and watch each others' backs).
  • Request the ship's security guide , a written description of where to go and who to talk to if a crime was committed, along with criminal law procedures for the countries you'll be visiting and a list of U.S. embassy and consulate locations.

If you are assaulted on a cruise

First and foremost, do what you need to do to keep yourself safe. After that, you have choices. The  Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010  (CVSSA) establishes certain requirements for passenger and crew safety on cruise ships.

  • Get medical assistance. At sea, the ship's medical facilities can treat any injuries. On shore, visit the nearest emergency room or hospital.
  • Report the crime on board . You have the right to insist that the scene of the crime be secured for law enforcement investigations. You also may want to make note of the names and contact information of anyone, crew or passengers, who witnessed or were involved in the incident, according to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN). After the ship docks, witnesses can be difficult to track down. Ask for copies of all documentation, although you may not get them.
  • Report the crime to the FBI . The FBI has jurisdiction over crimes on cruise ships if the ships leave or return to U.S. soil and the attacker or victim is a U.S. citizen. If you report to the ship the cruise line is required to contact the FBI but you can call them directly at (202) 324-3000.
  • Get a rape kit done. The CVSSA requires cruise lines to make sexual assault forensic exam kits available. If you do this, avoid showering or changing your clothes beforehand.
  • Talk to someone. Any sexual assault can be terrifying. You can talk to trained sexual assault counselors at the National Sexual Assault Hotline at (800) 656-HOPE (4673) or chat online at  online.rainn.org .

Disney Cruise Lines do not specifically address crime onboard on their website, although they do post a link to the DOT statistics on cruise line incident reporting as required by the CVSSA. Royal Caribbean International 's site says they are "committed to preventing illegal activity and treats all allegations seriously. We report all allegations of crimes to law enforcement, regardless of the validity of the claim."
