ATP Champions Tour Format

atp champions tour format

Traditionally, the Champions Tour consisted of around ten tournaments worldwide, with a year-ending “Champions Tennis” event held at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

However, after the pandemic disrupted the tour for almost two years, the events have become less frequent, with only four events being played in 2022 in Delray Beach, Hurlingham, Brasil and London.

It’s also tricky for fans to follow, with little promotion, coverage or live scoring, and currently, there is no dedicated website for the Champions Tour.

Champions Tour events are typically played over four days, with eight-man fields competing against each other in a round-robin format, ensuring that all players feature in at least three matches.

Like the ATP Finals, the players are split into two groups of four. But rather than semi-finals, the top player from each group contests the final, while the two players who finish second in each group play for third and fourth places, respectively.

The Champions Tour does have prize money , but individual pay is not usually disclosed, with events displaying a headline figure, often in the 1 million dollar or 1 million euro ballpark.

2023 Champions Tour Schedule

atp champions tour schedule

The following Champions Tour events are scheduled for 2023:

The Season Ending Champions Tour in London

royal albert hall tennis

Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall was the season-ending finale to the ATP Champions Tour. The Royal Albert Hall is one of the UK’s most treasured venues and first opened in 1871; interestingly, Champions Tennis was the only annual sporting event to take place at the Royal Albert Hall.

Over the years, Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall welcomed a host of the biggest names and personalities on the ATP Champions Tour to play competitively in both singles and entertaining doubles matches, with Mansour Bahrami often taking to the court with his trick shots and comic timing.

The event has also boasted legends such as John McEnroe, Pat Rafter, Goran Ivanisevic debutantes Andy Roddick and Fernando Gonzalez, and Tim Henman. Tennis was played there for the last time in 2021.

ATP Legends Cup

atp legends cup

Alongside the Champions Tour, a separate Legends Cup was also played in 2022. This is a team competition series among tennis players that have been ranked top 20 in the world and are above the age of 33.

The Top 12 Group founded the Cup in Sweden in collaboration with the ATP and ATP Champions Tour.

In 2022, there were three events, and the plan for the future is eight competitions yearly, with the last competition each year being a grand finale.

The format is a three-day event (1 session each day); in each session, three matches are played – two singles and one doubles.

No player can play singles more than once daily, and at least three of the four players must play singles and doubles. No doubles combination is played more than once unless for the Decider on Day 3 if points are 9:9

The scoring is a pro Set to 8 games and a 10 points match tie break 8 (with a 2 points margin).

Points won for a match win differ per day:

  • Day 1: 1 point per win in each match
  • Day 2: 2 points per win in each match
  • Day 3: 3 points per win in each match

The winning team must reach 10 points. In the event of a tie, after all, nine matches are played, a final doubles Match Tie break to 10 points will be played to decide the winner.

So you could say it’s a bit like the Laver Cup!

ATP Finals preview: Djokovic, Nadal look to cap Slam-winning seasons

The veterans are set to do battle with a host of established men's tennis stars at the tour's season-ending championships in Turin, Italy (13-20 November).

A memorable – and in many ways historic – men’s tennis season is set to culminate at the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy, in the coming week (13-20 November), where the top eight singles players and doubles teams of 2022 are set to do battle.

The year included Rafael Nadal’s stunning first half of the season, in which he won both the Australian and French Opens ; Novak Djokovic’s continued dominance at Wimbledon ; a breakout major title for 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open (and subsequent ascension to world No.1); and the retirement of one of the most iconic players in the game’s history, Roger Federer .

The Swiss star retires with 20 major singles titles to his name, while Nadal's two triumphs this year have boosted him to 22 and Djokovic stands at 21. Those numbers make the "Big 3" the winningest trio in men's tennis history at the Grand Slam level - among other places in the sport's history books.

Federer, of course, will not compete at the Pala Alpitour having played his last competitive match in September at Laver Cup, but nor will Alcaraz, who withdrew last week with an abdominal injury, putting to an end one of the most impressive one-season rises in recent memory.

Nadal and Djokovic are the veterans among the elite eight set to take the court in Turin, joined by Stefanos Tsitsipas , Daniil Medvedev , Casper Ruud , Felix Auger-Aliassime , Andrey Rublev and Taylor Fritz .

The men have been divided into two round-robin groups, where they’ll each play three singles matches. The top two players from each group advance.

Here, a preview of the action to come, storylines to watch, and how you can tune in to the action.

Green group: Nadal vs. the young guns

Can a fully fit Nadal win the year-end championships for the first time in his career? Nadal, 36, had his first practice in Turin on Wednesday (9 November) having missed the event a year ago in its inaugural staging in the Italian city.

The two-time Olympic champion (singles, Beijing 2008 ; doubles, Rio 2016 ) been drawn into the Green Group for his round-robin play, which includes two-time major finalist Ruud; an in-form Auger-Aliassime; and Fritz, who beat Nadal for the Indian Wells Masters title in March.

Ruud, who is based at Nadal’s academy in Spain, has made history for Norway this season, finishing as runner-up to Rafa at Roland-Garros before making a run to the US Open final, as well (where he lost to Alcaraz) and rising to world No.2.

Auger-Aliassime, the Canadian, has won 16 of his last 17 matches, including tour titles in Florence, Antwerp and Basel. The 25-year-old American Fritz snuck into the draw when Alcaraz withdrew, but has had a career year himself that has launched him into the top 10.

Red group: Djokovic has his hands full

While Djokovic is a four-time champion at the ATP Finals, he hasn’t won it since 2015. In fact, in his last three appearances at the event he’s 6-5 overall. But the 35-year-old comes in fresh, having only played 58 matches this season (41-17), a lighter lift than usual.

Djokovic, the Olympic bronze medallist in singles in 2008, is joined by three very established stars in the Red Group, including 2021 US Open champ Medvedev, who has occupied the No. 1 ranking at times this season, as well as Tsitsipas and Rublev.

It’s the Greek player Tsitsipas who finished as runner-up to Djokovic at the French Open in 2021, and who won this title in 2019 for the biggest win of his career. Medvedev was the 2020 champion in the pandemic staging of the tournament, while defending champion Alexander Zverev remains sidelined due to an injury from earlier this season.

Rublev captured Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020 , winning the mixed doubles with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova .

Alcaraz, Rune and the ‘changing of the guard?’

Is men’s tennis seeing a true “changing of the guard?” Not completely, no.

Nadal and Djokovic claimed three of the four Grand Slams in 2022, and though Federer retired and Alcaraz rocketed to No. 1, stalwarts like Rafa and Nole continue to fend off the next generations of burgeoning stars.

Nineteen-year-old Holger Rune added his name to that must-watch list, however, winning five matches against top 10 opponents to claim the Paris Masters last week, beating Djokovic in a dramatic final.

Eleven of the top 20 men in the world are 25 or under, while just four are over the age of 30. Alcaraz, who is six days younger than Rune, is not only the youngest player among the game’s elite but also the world’s top 125.

Doubles: World No.1 Koolhof/ Skupski lead the way

The Dutch-British duo of Welsey Koolhof and Neal Skupski has sealed the year-end world No.1 ranking, but would like to end the 2022 campaign with an ATP Finals trophy, too.

They are joined by US Open champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury ; French Open winners Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Roger ; Australian Open champs Thanasai Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgio s; as well as reigning Olympic champions Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic ; Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos ; Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara ; and Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek .

Koolhof/Skupski are joined by Mektic/Pavic, Kokkinkais/Kyrgios and Dodig/Krajicek in the Green Group, while Ram/Salisbury, Arevalo/Roger, Granollers/Zeballos and Glasspool/Heliovaara make up the Red Group.

The doubles format plays out the same as singles: Three round-robin matches, with the top two qualifying teams from both groups advancing to the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Rune and Hubert Hurkacz are serving as the singles alternates for the singles event.

How to watch: Schedule and TV tune-in times

The ATP Finals kick off on Sunday (13 November) and play through six days of round-robin group play. The days are divided into afternoon and evening sessions, and all times are local Turin time (CEST).

Round-robin Sunday, 13 Nov.-Friday, 18 Nov. 1130am doubles, 1400 singles 1830 doubles, 2100 singles

Semi-finals Saturday, 19 Nov. 1130 am doubles semi No. 1, 1400 singles semi No. 1 1830 doubles semi No. 2, 2100 singles semi No. 2

Djokovic, Ruud Chase Milestone Title In Turin

champions tour tennis 2022

The Nitto ATP Finals championship match starts at 7pm CET/1pm ET on Sunday, 20 November.

The star-studded field of eight champions has been trimmed to two at the Nitto ATP Finals, with Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud still standing to contest Sunday's title match. In addition to the Turin trophy, both men are playing for a major milestone in their respective careers.

Djokovic is seeking his sixth Nitto ATP Finals crown, a mark which would match Roger Federer for the tournament record. The 35-year-old can also become the oldest champion at the season finale, after the then-30-year-old Federer's London triumph in 2011. By claiming the title as an undefeated champion, Djokovic would walk away with a record payday of more than $4.7 million, as well as 1,500 Pepperstone ATP Rankings points.

Ruud — a nine-time ATP Tour champion — is hunting his first 'Big Title' after falling just short in the finals at Miami, Roland Garros and the US Open this year. Already up one place to World No. 3 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings this week, the 23-year-old could return to No. 2 and move within 500 points of Carlos Alcaraz at the pinnacle of the men's game with another victory.

A victory would set either man up with a strong chance at passing the Spaniard early in the 2023 season, with neither Djokovic nor Ruud defending points at the Australian Open.

Who wins Sunday's final?

Djokovic in two sets, djokovic in three sets, ruud in two sets, ruud in three sets.

Despite his lofty ranking, Ruud still feels like the underdog against Djokovic, who has moved up three places himself to No. 5 this week in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings. The Norwegian has yet to win a set in three previous meetings with the former World No. 1, including a 7-6(4), 6-2 defeat last year in the Turin group stage. But Ruud has high hopes of breaking that trend on Sunday against the reigning Wimbledon champion.

"He's a player that doesn't have many weaknesses at all," he said of his final opponent. "But he is human. He lost two weeks ago to Rune in the [Rolex Paris Masters] final. It's not like he plays these finals every day of his career, in his life. I'm sure he will also feel a little bit of pressure. There's a lot on the line."

Having watched Djokovic win his five previous year-end titles on TV, Ruud is now in position to stop him from gaining No. 6. He will be hoping that fitness becomes a factor, with Djokovic entering his third match in as many days after gruelling contests against Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz.

"He's played a little bit more tennis than I have," Ruud said after a dominant 6-2, 6-4 semi-final win against Andrey Rublev. "I don't know if he will feel tired — probably not. But this is the perfect way for me to go into the final. I hope I can save some of this great tennis for tomorrow and see what happens."

As he did against Rublev, Ruud will seek to use his high-RPM forehand to dictate the rallies against Djokovic. The Norwegian's tactics for his semi-final win centred on attacking the Rublev backhand. On Sunday, Djokovic may employ the same game plan against Ruud.

According to the finalists' INSIGHTS Shot Quality scores — which factor in a variety of metrics to grade strokes on a 10-point scale — the backhand is where Djokovic holds the biggest edge in this matchup. With both men characterised as 'Solid Baseliners' by the analysis, the title match will be won by the player who executes that style better on the day.

Shot Quality: Djokovic vs. Ruud

Specific to this week in Turin, the statistics are even more encouraging for Djokovic, with his forehand rated a field-leading 8.91 at the Pala Alpitour. The Serbian also leads the eight Turin qualifiers in Steal Score and Return Quality this week, with Ruud graded second on the forehand and third in Steal rate.

In addition to stealing 37.1 per cent of points from defence this week, Djokovic has played nearly 25 per cent of his shots In Attack at the 2022 Nitto ATP Finals, and he has converted 73.6 per cent of points in which he has gained an offensive advantage.

All of that has translated to a seventh tour-level final of the season for Djokovic.

"I was looking forward to being in this position," the seventh seed said after his 7-6(5), 7-6(6) win against Fritz on Saturday. "I'm very happy to be able to compete for another big trophy, one of the biggest ones that we have in our sport."

While he admitted to feeling "heavy legs" and a "lack of reactivity" against the American, Djokovic took care of business without his very best tennis. He knows nothing short of excellence will be enough against Ruud in the final.

"I would love to, of course, win the trophy, but I'm not going to be the only player who is going to want that on the court," Djokovic said in his post-match press conference. "Hopefully I'll be able to play at the level that I've played most of the matches this week and get a trophy."

It would come as no surprise to see Djokovic ending his season with the title after his strong lead-in to Turin. The Serbian posted a 13-1 record in his past three ATP Tour events, winning trophies in Tel Aviv and Astana before reaching the Rolex Paris Masters Final. His four titles this season also include triumphs at Wimbledon and in Rome.

Ruud's progress in Turin was less predictable — similar to his breakout season, which the Norwegian has admitted surprised even him. After his run to the US Open final, Ruud slumped to a 2-4 record in four ATP Tour tournaments before rediscovering his form in Turin.

"I think when the draw was made here, I guess I was the least favourite to reach the final; I think I can say for sure, compared to all the other great players who I consider are maybe better hard-court indoor players than myself," Ruud said after reaching the title match. "There are small margins in this sport. I've been able to come through, fight through, be in the final, so I'm very happy about it."

I plan to use your services for future ticket needs and refer you to friends looking for a quality ticket service. Thanks again, Bob

“Once in a lifetime experience!”

Hi. We're back from Wimbledon (certainly a magical place) and just want to thank you for your help getting there. It was a once in a lifetime experience -- great seats, great weather, and all the arrangements worked well. No drama in the tennis when we were at Center Court but we got to see Roger, Rafa and Serena all in one day -- couldn't ask for more. And although I would have liked to have seen the Federer/Anderson match, I probably would have been bummed to see Roger lose. (Mike: are you at the matches this week?) Am watching the Anderson/Isner match now (a nail-biter) and it's such fun to see the grounds and recognize them. Thanks again for your help. Gerry

“A thank you from New Zealand ”

Hi I just wanted to email to say what fabulous service we have had from you guys throughout our involvement for tickets to the Australian Open. We have just returned and had the most amazing time. Your people were so easy to deal with, with our barrage of questions given our nervousness of booking with a US company from NZ. Even when we called they were so accommodating, polite and knowledgable and every different rep went out of their way to help. Thank you Tennis Tours - we will definitely use you again!

“ Federer at the World Tour Finals!”

Chris, Just wanted to send you a quick note while we are in London to thank CTT for setting up our trip. Today we saw Federer vs. Cilic. The seats, which were in the SECOND ROW, were simply amazing! The hotel you booked is located a few tube stops away from the O2 arena. The hotel has a very modern appeal, and it’s in a cool area on London. Last night we went to a musical and we go back to the finals on Saturday. Once again, thank you!

“Well done! Thank you for taking care of my parents!”

Chris, Thank you and your team for making my parents weekend in NYC special. They were very positive with you all and had a great time at the hotel/location (me a wife really like it too), Wiked, and at the Open. Thank you for all the special request I had throughout the last few weeks to make this be special. My mom now wants to go Wimbledon, so you may here from me again! Best, Roberto
