After an hour drive, when we reach OTDC Panthanivas from the OTDC Panchalingeswar, the parking in front of the hotel was full of cars. The beach was just on the other side opposite our hotel, buzzing with the weekend crowd. We quickly checked into our room on the 2nd floor. The first thing I did was go to the balcony to view the sea from our room. But the sea seemed to vanish already. Well. That’s the beauty of Chandipur sea beach in Odisha. The sea recedes so far during the low tide that there seems no sea at all, just an endless stretch of muddy beach in front. So, we quickly got ready to explore this natural wonder and headed towards the beach. The sun was already behind a dark cloud and the buzzing crowd already dispersed in search of the vanishing sea.

Chandipur is situated in the Balasore district in Odisha. It is a less explored weekend beach destination. There is a unique phenomenon that makes this seabeach one of the natural wonders in India. The sea here recedes so much during low tide that it appears vanished. Tourists walk on the seabed for a few kilometres before they get a glimpse of the sea. Whereas during high tide, the sea again comes back to shore. One can spot marine lives stuck at the empty sea bed during low tide. The endangered horse-shoe red crab can be seen in large numbers here.

Chandipur is also a crucial location for the Government of India as the Integrated Test Range (ITR) launch pad of DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization) is located here. All the ballistic missiles like Akash, Saurya, Prithvi and Agni have been first tested from here.

The Buribalam river flows close to Chandipur. This river was a major maritime passage in the 18th century. The Danish, the Dutch, the French and the British used this river to establish trading through the town of Balasore. It was an area of shipbuilding and ship repairing back then. The town also was a manufacturing hub during that time. The muslin handkerchiefs made here was famous as “Balasore handkerchiefs”.

How to reach

Chandipur is 15 kilometres away from Balasore town. Balasore can be reached both by road and rail from the nearest cities like Kolkata and Bhubaneswar.

By road, Balasore is 240 kilometres from Kolkata and takes nearly 5 hours to drive via NH16. The distance between Balasore and Bhubaneswar, the state capital, is 200 kilometres.

Balasore is also a major station in the Howrah-Bhubaneswar train route on the main south-eastern railway network. Most of the express and mail trains to Bhubaneswar, Vizag and Chennai stop at Balasore. It takes around 4 hours to reach Balasore from Howrah station. One can hire a car or an autorickshaw to reach Chandipur from Balasore station.

When to visit

The best time to visit Chandipur sea beach is during winter when the weather is cold and less humid. During monsoon, the drama in the cloudy sky and its reflection on the seabed make a perfect landscape photography canvas. The monsoon rain also makes the ambience more romantic.

The summer is sweltering and humid here, and apart from the early morning hours, it is tough to spend time at the beach.

If you want to drive down to Chandipur from Kolkata (Calcutta) - the directions are as follows:

  • Take the Second Hooghly Bridge
  • Follow Kona Expressway (4-Lane road)
  • At the Bombay Road crossing - take a left.
  • Follow Bombay Road (4-Lane road)
  • You may break at the A1 Plaza inside the Reliance petrol station. It would be to your left - a 30-40 minute ride from the Kona Expressway - Bombay Road junction (Avoid the Azad Hind Dhaba - it is no longer up to the mark)
  • Keep straight until you cross the Rupnarayan river (the bridge is one way and the river is wide)
  • After you cross the river you will see the Kolaghat Thermal Power Station to your left
  • Immediately after the Power Station is a junction (Haldia junction)– go straight. (left goes to Haldia)
  • Kharagpur Junction. Go straight towards NH 60 (4-lane concrete road - careful of the turn you take)
  • NH 60 after Kharagpur is peaceful compared to NH 5. Very few buses and trucks and road is bordered by paddy fields stretching to the horizon. This is an amazing road - but careful they are constructing speedbreakers on the road now.
  • A toll is charged at Jaleswar border (₹40 for cars), but no entry tax (as of 2011)
  • Before reaching Jaleswar town, you'll find that the new 4-lane NH-60 stretch is under construction.
  • Basleshwar (Balasore) town. Traffic congestion. Take a left turn under overhead bridge.
  • Go straight. You'll reach the bus stand. Cross the flyover after it and take a right turn immediately after crossing the flyover.
  • Take a right turn in the next junction
  • Go straight till you reach a Police point. There is a Cinema hall just behind it. Take right turn and go straight till the road meets another road.
  • Take left turn and go straight.
  • Around 10   km off, you'll see some signboards of various hotels in Chandipur-on-sea. Take left turn and go straight. This is easy to miss - try not to go into the Integrated Test Launch Zone. You're there!

From the flyover mentioned above, we do not agree with the route   : the flyover lands into a roundabout. Take a left from there and you will be guided to Chandipur. We travelled on 19th Sep 2009 and found the road nearing Balasore is still under construction. Also, roads within Balasore are narrow and has a lot of rush. For more visit road distance related info visit   : www.roaddistance.in

Banadurga Travels runs AC buses from Balasore to Kolkata (6AM) and back (6PM), starting at Dharamtala in Kolkata. A ticket costs ₹230.

Hire cars are available. Charge: ₹900-₹1,200 for sight seeing. You can also get an OTDC tour bus from Chandipur, that goes to the nearby temples in the area.

  • Movement of the sea – it recedes 5   km with low tide and comes back all the way with high tide.

If you are tired of the sea, move around. Go to Balasore and nearby places.

There is always something to buy. Nothing special here. But you can buy delicious sweets here. Items of clothing are cheap compared to other cities nearby.

Prawns are very cheap. You can have a delicious prawn item at Anandamayee Hotel or Panthanibas or elsewhere. However, as sea prawns sometimes cause allergic reactions, be careful.

Green coconuts recommended. However, if one is fussy about hard drinks, it is safer to carry it.

While going from Chandipur towards Balasore, just where the road to ITR splits off, there is a small shack with some of the best sweets in that area. The Road distance between Chandipur to Balasore is 12 kilometres and it will take 23 minutes to reach there.

Chandipur Beach Odisha

Chandipur, or Chandipur-on-sea, is a serene beach in the state of Odisha, near Balasore Village. As if the beach is already not enough to wonderstruck people, it is on the Bay of Bengal and is about 16 kilometers from the Baleswar Railway Station. It is quite well known and talked about but not because it’s a travel destination but because the beach doesn’t look same at every time. Surprised right? Well yes, it is indeed true. The sea here recedes by as much as five kilometers—3 miles-- every day during ebb tide and then comes back with its magic bringing horseshoe crabs and red crab during the high tide. And because of its one of a kind phenomenon, it is able to support its biodiversity and keeps it rich. Isn’t it what nature is all about? Because of its unique event, the beach is also known as Odisha's Hide and Seek Beach.

It is ideal for the people who find solace in quiet places and want to spend some time away from all the hustle bustle of the city. It sure sounds like a dream getaway for the couples too who just want to lie down and look up in the sky. It is no doubt that a beach so tranquil and polished has also other attractions where you could just merely immerse your soul unconditionally and enjoy the true warmth of nature. From eating succulent crabs to witnessing receding of the sea to watching the sunset passionately, there are still so many wonders to observe and memorize. Chandipur is not very crowded or a commercialized one, which gives everyone an opportunity to explore the beach and relish the experience. This also keeps it super clean and offers a wonderful view to all the photographers out there.

Top Things to Do on the Beach

The beach offers an excellent opportunity for all the sea food lovers as one can tickle their taste buds with delectable food services available. There is Chandipur Festival organized every year, so while you’re appreciating the talent from around the world, you can also get high on the mouthwatering sea food.

Chandipur is a beach in Odisha’s Balasore district. The beach is around 16 kilometers from the Balasore Railway Station and is located on the Bay of Bengal’s shore. The beach is remarkable in that during the ebb tide, the sea recedes up to 5 kilometers. The beach encourages biodiversity because of its unique setting. Horseshoe crab can also be seen on the beach near Mirzapur, a nearby fishing market and village at the Budhabalanga River’s confluence (Balaramgadi). It’s a great area for a picnic. Here is one of Odisha Tourism’s Panthanivas (guest houses).

Defence Ministry (Mo D) :

At Abdul Kalam Island, formerly known as Wheeler Island, the Indian Strategic Forces Command’s Integrated Test Range (ITR) is also located in Chandipur. The ITR has tested and fired a number of Indian missiles, including the nuclear-capable Prithvi, Agni, and Shaurya ballistic missiles, as well as the Akash and Barak 8 surface-to-air missiles.

Transport : Traveling up to Baleswar by rail or road and then boarding a bus, auto, or taxi to Chandipur is possible. National Highway 16 provides access to Baleswar (NH-16). Balasore railway station is 16 kilometers from Chandipur sea beach. To view the important locations of Panchalinegeswar, Khirachora Gopinath temple, Chandipur Beach, Emami Jagannath temple, and Nilgiri Jagannath temple, hire a local guide and trekker.

Food : In hotels and restaurants, a wide variety of seafood is offered. Here, fish is extremely cheap.

Chandipur Beach: Where the Sea Disappears Every Day

Chandipur Beach

India Writer

In the state of Odisha , near Balasore Village in the small town of Chandipur, Chandipur Beach is a secluded place shrouded in mystery. It’s unique because the sea water periodically disappears right in front of your eyes, then reappears after some time. Intrigued? Read on.

Also called the ‘hide-and-seek’ beach, Chandipur Beach is a sprawling stretch of golden sand surrounded by Casuarina trees, pristine waters, and lush coastal vegetation. But a strange natural phenomenon occurs here every day. Believe it or not, the sea water recedes up to 5 kilometres (3 miles), twice a day during low-tide, leaving behind only the shells. The water returns during the high tide.

This extreme natural phenomenon has really enriched the biodiversity of sea creatures in the area. When the sea water re-appears, it brings along with it horseshoe crabs and red crabs, which otherwise live further from the beach.

http://instagram.com/p/BK3XHK-j7vM/

This phenomenon is thought to be unique to this beach. There’s no fixed time that the tide retreats, as it depends on the moon cycle, but it happens every day. Locals are familiar with the timings of the low and high tides. The sunrises and sunsets are particularly spectacular at this beach, whether the tide is in or out.

Another interesting fact about Chandipur is that it is home to DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization) Integrated Research Range, where ballistic missiles are test-fired.

Chandipur Beach is also a great place to try some lip-smacking fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants lining the beach.
