Norwegian Fjords Cruises

Chockful of insane scenery and quaint, colourful towns, the Fjords offer up some peak (see what we did there?) sights to see. And really, there’s no better way to witness the wild, enchanting beauty that’s all around you than by cruise ship.

Winding your way through its incredible waterways, you’ll take in unreal views of shimmering waterfalls, lush tree-lined landscapes, and a whole load more, all from the best vantage point in the place – your cruise ship.

Need a bit of heritage to go with those scenic vistas? Norway’s got plenty of that, and it’s unlike anywhere else in the world too. Nordic folklore, sparring Vikings and mythical beings can all be found here. And let’s not forget two Hollywood heavyweights you’ll have definitely heard of. Long before they jumped onto the silver screen, Thor and Loki’s age-old stories started here, and they’re ready to captivate you all over again too.

If the Fjords are calling, then let’s help get you there. We have the best deals and prices on the market, and that’s something we’ll never get tired of saying. Looking to bag a bargain? Our Norwegian Fjord cruises let you experience everything you could ask for – and you’ll still have plenty left over for spending money!

What’s the weather like in the Norwegian Fjords?

You might think that weather-wise, the Fjords’ only options are cold, cold and more cold. But actually, they’re pretty mild compared to the likes of Alaska and Greenland. At the same time though, it’s not exactly bikini weather either. It varies a lot by region, so be ready with your layers if you like to stay toastie.

The Norwegian fjords are a stunning natural wonder that offer some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world, and the weather between April and September only adds to their beauty, in our opinion this is the best time to travel, with the snow melting and the landscape blooming into life. The temperature during this period is mild, with long sunny days that give you plenty of time to soak up the scenery.

The cool breeze that blows through the fjords is refreshing, and the fresh air is invigorating, making it the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking to kayaking, the fjords offer endless opportunities to explore and connect with nature. Whether you're seeking out adventure or simply looking to unwind in a stunning natural setting, the Norwegian fjords are sure to give you everything you want from a cruise holiday.

DO IT YOURWAY

Who do you fancy cruising with? Want to do it Italian style with  Costa ? Looking for some hidden gems off the beaten track?  MSC  could be for you. Or perhaps Britain’s biggest cruise lines will be the ones to get your Norwegian adventure up and running. In that case, could  P&O  be your go-to? Decisions, decisions…

Whoever you choose, we make it easy. By partnering with some of the world’s top cruise lines, we’re all about bringing you holiday deals that make that hard-earned money go further. And we’ll make sure you get to do things your way too!

Our  cruises from Southampton  let you skip the flight entirely, keeping stress levels low and your spirits high from the second you step onboard. Or how about our  Smart Packages ? We don’t call them the best value cruise deals in the UK for nothing.

Whether you’re extending your holiday by a few extra days or flying from your airport of choice, or we’re throwing in a few extra freebies like cabin upgrades, onboard spending money or putting you up in a fancy hotel, it’s all included in the price! No worries, no hassle, just the holiday of a lifetime.

Norwegian Fjords Highlights

Situated on Norway’s southwestern coast, Bergen is surrounded by mountains and fjords, including the second-longest in the world – Sognefjord. But it’s not just records this neck of the woods lays claim to. A truly welcoming sight, you’ll be greeted by rows of colourfully painted homes and buildings, equally as charming lit up at night as they are in the bright of day.

With its main attractions within walking distance, Bergen is built for leisurely strolls and spectacle-filled wandering. While you’ve got your boots on, make for Bryggen. The spot where the first buildings of the city were developed, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most well-known medieval city settlements in Norway. Afterwards, take your trip to the next level – literally – by hopping on the funicular train all the way up to Mount Fløyen. Cameras at the ready!

A summer-time jaunt sees Bergen even more laid back than usual thanks to its almost endless hours of sunlight, which means plenty of time to see the place in all its natural sparkle.

With a name that means ‘little place with big mountains’, Flam’s moniker couldn’t be any more fitting. A picture-perfect hamlet with a river flowing through the centre, you’ll be surrounded by green meadows and steep, snow-capped mountains, while picturesque farms and houses can be found dotted around the village itself.

Flam’s big-things-in-small-packages rep is clear to see elsewhere too. Although it has a population of just 350 people, it’s actually the fourth largest cruise port in Norway by number of calls (at 175 ships!) with the fifth largest by number of passengers. It might be popular, but it’s also the perfect place to go for a leisurely stroll and appreciate some of Norway’s finest scenery, especially from the Flam Railway, which reaches over 2,845 feet above sea level!

Dubbed the ‘Gateway to the Glaciers’, a trip through Olden is like transporting yourself to a totally different world. Mesmerising to behold, this little town is surrounded by such a vast amount of magnificent scenery, it feels like a secret part of the world that only you, your fellow cruisers and the locals are in on. You wouldn’t know that thousands of people get the bug to go here every year.

Home to the Jostedal Glacier, the largest glacier on the European mainland, this incredible slab of ice is well worth seeing for yourself. Feeling brave enough? Get your inner adventurer on and leave footprints on its deep blue expanse.

Early risers are in for a treat too. Sailing into Olden port early in the morning is a real wake-up call, complete with unbelievable views and cool, cleansing Norwegian air. The proper way to wipe the sleep from your eyes.

Known as the ‘Cradle of the Vikings’, opportunities for plundering may be low on Stavanger’s list, but there are plenty of other treasures to treat yourself to here instead. A former European Capital of Culture, Stavanger is proud of its Nordic heritage, with Norse history at every turn.

Head to Rogaland, where its collection of museums, exhibits and archaeological sites show there’s more to its ancestors than their reputation for ravaging marauders. The Swords in Rock monument is a real gem, one that marks the unification of Norway with three enormous swords, each one symbolising peace, unity and freedom.

Docking at Gamle Stavanger, the city’s old quarter, the area’s 200-year-old white wooden cottages are another highlight, boasting plenty of old-town charm. But be sure to make time for the ‘Preacher’s Pulpit’. The 600-metre climb seems scary, but the trail is well worth traipsing up, especially for the photo op at the top!

Tucked away in its own little world, a cruise along the fjord towards Geiranger is like cracking open a fairy tale of your own. Waterfalls cascade from the snowy peaks above, down their green mountainsides. Quaint coffee shops treat tourists with their wares. Serene waters slow the pace down to unreal levels of relaxation.

There’s plenty for eager explorers to explore here, too. The waterfall walk is 237 steps up (or down) of wild nature and man-made architecture, with unbelievable views of the area’s crashing waterfalls to boot. If heights aren’t an issue, then the Skywalk at the top of Mount Dalsnibba lets you take Europe’s highest view of Geiranger’s fjords. Be sure to bring your camera with you, ‘cause the views are mesmerising!

Like your cool with a dose of culture? Neither are in short supply in Oslo. With trendy neighbourhoods, incredible green spaces, world-class museums and a top-notch cuisine scene, there’s plenty to see and do here.

Old and new sit side by side in Oslo. You could be walking your way around the 13 th -century Akershus Castle one moment, then treating yourself to a delicious nibble at a chic restaurant the next. It’s easy to see why people flock to this mini city every year.

Keep an eye out for its architecture too. From the sloping roof of Oslo Opera House to the 12 individually designed buildings that make up the Barcode, art fans are in for some real gems here too. The Munch Museum makes for a real Scream , while Frogner Park, with its collection of over 200 sculptures, is a weird and whimsical walk with plenty of green and serene trees to keep you company.

Kristiansand

A trip through Kristiansand means experiencing bustling trade of fresh seafood, lively restaurants and an idyllic canal-side setting complete with top-notch shopping opportunities and plenty of culture to gorge on.

Why not get to know the city’s history at Vest Adger, one of Norway’s largest open-air museums? Or take a stroll through Poesbyen, the destination’s oldest area? If art’s your thing, then be sure to visit Gallery Bi-Z, the region’s largest private art gallery. Or for some up-close animal attractions, head to Kristiansand Dyreparken and Zoo, where the likes of wolves, lynxes and moose can all be seen. There’s even an open area where monkeys swing across ropes situated above you.

Small and sleepy, Eidfjord also has some big attractions in store. Home to Harddangerfjord, the second-longest fjord in Norway, the largest mountain plateau and Norway’s largest national park, Hardangervidda, can also be found here. Whichever you explore, both offer up peace and quiet that’s unlike anywhere else.

Want a little extra from your Eidfjord adventure? It all depends on the time of year. Around May and June, the mountains bloom with white, pink and red flowers from top to bottom, and believe us, it’s something that’s well worth seeing for yourself! From July to October, meanwhile, the region’s fruit is harvested. And with many a cider festival to be found in its small villages, it’s all put to very good use.

Norwegian Fjords Cruises FAQs

The good news is that the coastal regions of Norway tend to be on the balmy side in the winter – at least compared to its inland region. You might get some snow around Oslo, but you won’t encounter any of the strong winds, bitter frost or white stuff like you would inland, where it’s practically Arctic!

Longer days and a warmer climate signal Norway’s spring. The temperatures get milder in Southern Norway – where Kristiansand pops up on our itineraries – with average days of 6°C and highs of up to 16°C

You won’t be experiencing scorching heat in the Norwegian summer, but with an average of 13-18 °C, things are still pretty pleasant. Plus, you’ll get to experience the Midnight Sun: 24 hours of daylight. It’s a bit surreal, but more daylight means more time to explore, so bring along your walking boots. A sleep mask is always a good idea too.

If crisp days, autumnal colours and fewer crowds are more your thing, then this time of the year is for you. Oslo tends to be the warmest area (with an average high of 9.3°C) during this season, but you’ll still need to bring layers for head, hands and toes. Oh yeah, October is peak Northern Lights time, so if you’re seeking out the must-see glow of the Aurora Borealis, now’s your best chance!

Sights to see during a Norway cruise

There is a lot to discover in the towns along the Norwegian coast. After arriving at the Lysefjord, you can hike on the 600 metre high Preikestolen and enjoy the breathtaking views of the fjord and the surrounding mountains from above. If you are looking for a special thrill, you can dare a basejump here. In the Oslofjord , on the other hand, the capital city with its museums attracts visitors. The Bygdøy Peninsula is home to the Norwegian Maritime Museum - Norsk Maritime Museum  - and the Vikingskipshuset Museum with Viking ships from the 9th century. The 371-metre-high Holmenkollen mountain offers a magnificent view of the fjord and the city , The time-honoured ski jumping facility is not only known to Winter sports enthusiasts. In the associated ski museum, you can also learn about the history of Winter sports in Norway - and especially in Oslo. --> Oslo cruises

If your cruise ship takes you on a journey through the unique Norwegian fjord landscape in Flåm , you should not miss a trip on the Flåm Railway. Along the route you can enjoy beautiful views of the mountains and the train stops at the mighty Kjosfossen waterfall for a photo stop.

If you’re a nature lover, you're in the right place on a Norway cruise anyway. With a little luck, in the evening in Tromsø you will be able to watch the special plays of light in the sky as the Northern Lights illuminate the night. If you want to travel against the midnight sun, the Norway cruise is just as exciting for you. In Honningsvåg -  the northernmost point of Europe - drive to the North Cape . There you can find an informative visitor centre or you can head to the bird cliff near Gjesværstappan, where countless puffins, cormorants and gannets can be admired. --> North Cape cruises

The Lofoten islands, offshore to the Norwegian mainland offers one thing: peace and solitude. Here you can go fishing or hike on one of the more than 50 islands. At the same time you can also visit the Lofotr Viking Museum , paddle a kayak tour to the secluded coves or discover old fishing villages. --> Lofoten cruises

A unique nature experience is a visit to the Arctic islands of Spitsbergen , where you can observe not only polar bears on guided tours, but also a variety of animals that have adapted to the freezing weather. An absolute highlight are hot air balloon rides. From lofty heights, you will not only see your cruise ship at anchor, but you will also be able to admire the natural beauties from a bird's eye view much better. --> Spitsbergen cruises

Not to be forgotten is also the Nordland region - the gateway to the North of Norway. The region lies above the Arctic Circle and is the beginning of the North of Norway. Here you can expect an incredible, beautiful landscape with a cultural, mystical and historical background. Clear lakes, breathtaking panoramic views and fabulous mountains that create a magical atmosphere, can be found here as far as the eye can see.

When trolls dance through fjords and the northern lights shine

There is something mystical about spending the Summer evenings on your cruise ship in one of Norway's many fjords and looking up to the sky. There are rarely stars to see, because the further North you come, the shorter the nights. At the North Cape, the sun does not set any more between late May and mid-July. This unique natural spectacle is hard to beat and yet the colourful, often blue-green coloured northern lights - Aurora Borealis - are certainly just as spectacular. You can see them especially well in the Spring and Autumn times as no ships visit Norway in the Winter.

Most Norway cruises offer a stop in the famous Geiranger Fjord . Get off the ship in Hellesylt and go kayaking on a discovery tour of the UNESCO World Heritage. Almost vertically falling waterfalls are fed by the snow-capped mountain peaks. And with the appropriate position of the sun, the cascades of the " Seven Sisters " provide a rainbow-like illumination of the rocks. On a spectacular trip over the Trollstigen you drive on a mountain road that winds along the steep cliffs and provides unique views on the way. At the same time, you can get an idea of the amount of work involved in road construction at this point in 1936.

In Bergen, the second largest city in Norway, stroll comfortably against the backdrop of the old harbour front Bryggen - also called Tyskebryggen - past small shops, restaurants and museums. All this once housed the old trading offices of the Hanseatic League. Visit the Hanseatic Landungsbrücken, evidence of Bergen's flourishing business with the world. --> Bergen cruises

During a trip to the stave church Fantoft you will get to know the special architectural style of these buildings, which were built entirely of wood and without a single screw. The stave church here was modelled on the original building from 1150, after it was completely burned down. Originally the church stood in the Sognefjord and was moved to Fantoft in 1883, where it fell victim to the flames in 1992.

In southeastern Norway Ålesund the unique natural landscape and the special architecture meet. Allow yourself a view of the city and the sea from the viewpoints on Aksla, the city hill of Ålesund. The Fjellstua and Kniven observation decks are within walking distance of more than 400 steps from the Stadtpark or can be easily reached by tram. Below them is the city with small offshore islands and opposite the Sunnmøre Alps .

On an excursion to the Alnes lighthouse in the fishing village of the same name, you will get to know Norway's lighthouse construction and you will be able to hear some of the history of the Vikings, who once were masters of the Northern seas.

For those who, in addition to all the breathtaking nature, still fancy a big-city feeling should pay a visit to Trondheim. The 11th-century Gothic Nidaros Cathedral is sure to captivate every visitor. For a shopping stroll and a cozy coffee, there are various shops and cafes. Enjoy the nature and the history of Scandinavia marked by the Vikings and sailors during your Norway cruise.

About Norway Cruise Deals

The beauty of the Norwegian Fjords is best seen by cruising, and it doesn't do any harm that this is also the most comfortable way to enjoy a visit to this part of the world! Focus on your cruise ship here - look for one that boasts lots of panoramic views from inside, don't be tempted to think you can enjoy it all from the top deck!

Cruises to the Norwegian Fjords depart from all over the UK, which is great if you want to get going with your holiday as soon as possible. Flam, Stavanger and Bergen are the main ports of call, with a whole host of others that can be added into the mix.

Look out for the number of days you have cruising the fjords, as these can vary a lot between itineraries, and if you book during the summer be aware that longer days and shorter nights can mean that the sun never sets!

Top Cruise Destinations

Obviously the fjords themselves are the focal point of cruises to the Norwegian Fjords, with Naeroyfjord and Geirangerfjord being the most popular - and they are also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are seven fjords in total and all offer stunning cruising!

Stavanger , Flam and Bergen are staples of the fjords cruises, and each of these offers a look at Norwegian culture whilst keeping you firmly in a world of natural beauty. Stavanger is best known for its centre crammed with 17th and 18th century wooden houses whilst Bergen is all about its brightly coloured and bustling centre.

Oslo and Amsterdam are other great ports to look out for, giving your cruise to one of the most beautiful parts of the world a cultural edge as well. You could take in the Vigeland Sculpture Park in Oslo, or keep with the watery theme in Amsterdam and take a canal boat tour.

Cheap Norway Cruises

These cruises often get booked up well in advance thanks to a whole heap of early bird offers, so use our cruise search to get your Norwegian Fjords trip arranged. The high summer ones are most popular as you'll usually get to experience the midnight sun, so look for May or September dates to save.

It's also worth looking out for free upgrades on cabins, especially if you can book an outside and get a balcony upgrade - imagine your own personal views as you cruise the fjords!

And make sure you save on your way to your departure port. With no-fly cruises it's a great idea to look for free shuttle buses to the port, free parking, or even free overnight stays nearby. Parking costs can really rack up if you're away for a week or more, so always make sure to ask about options from your cruise provider.

Norway allows cruise ships in world heritage fjords until 2032.

Large cruise ships will be able to visit the most famous Norwegian fjords until 2032.

Since 2018, the clock has been ticking for cruise ships sailing in the world-famous Norwegian fjords. Back then, a government decision was made that would prevent all except zero-emission vessels from sailing in the World Heritage fjords by 2026.

However, with major cruise lines’ Norway itineraries for 2026 already featuring alternate ports, the Norwegian government has changed course. Implementation of the ruling will be delayed by six years, essentially giving cruise lines more than seven years until the ban begins.

Small Ships Must Be Zero-Emission

In a press release (only available in Norwegian ), the government explains that the initial ruling still applies to tourist ships and ferries under 10,000 gross tonnes.

Given that even small cruise ships have a gross tonnage of at least double that figure, the ruling essentially only applies to passenger ferries and sightseeing vessels. Such vessels must be zero-emission from January 1, 2026, although many operating in the fjords already are.

For larger ships, including some of the world’s biggest cruise ships that regularly visit the Norwegian fjords, the requirement will come into effect on January 1, 2032.

The announcement comes after a long period of consultation with relevant industries on exactly how the 2018 decision should be implemented.

Trump vs. harris 2024 polls: harris’ lead grows—winning by 5 points in one survey, today’s nyt mini crossword clues and answers for thursday, august 29th.

A spokesperson from Stranda Port Authority praised the government’s new approach: “Strict environmental requirements are well balanced with the actual technological development. The minister has listened to the feedback from the entire industry.”

More Time For Technology Development

The Norwegian Parliament has decided that zero-emission requirements for tourist ships and ferries must be implemented by 2026, but that changes are required to ensure that ports within the World Heritage fjords don’t lose out on important tourist traffic.

The UNESCO World Heritage fjord area includes the Aurlandsfjord, Geirangerfjord, Nærøyfjord, Sunnylvsfjord, and Tafjord.

Ports within the area—including world-famous cruising destinations like Flåm and Geiranger—rely on tourism and especially on cruise traffic as a major driver of their economies. The requirements will now be implemented gradually, as parliament “accepts the technology for larger ships is not yet sufficiently advanced.”

Minister of climate and environment Andreas Bjelland Eriksen said it was important to find a solution that “follows up on parliament's decision on zero emissions in the World Heritage fjords, stimulates technological development, takes into account the tourism industry in the ports of call, and provides sufficient predictability for the industry.”

To meet the zero-emission requirement, smaller ships will be permitted to use biogas. Biogas is a renewable energy source produced from organic materials, such as agricultural waste, manure, municipal waste, plant material, sewage, green waste, or food waste.

To maintain critical local transport services, local ferries will temporarily be exempt from the zero-emission requirement.

There will also be a requirement to use shore power where available. As such, parliament also decided that the state should fund the establishment of shore power in Flåm.

Strong Criticism From Havila

While the global cruise industry and passengers alike will no doubt welcome the news, not every travel company is pleased. In particular Norway’s Havila Voyages described the move as a “scandal” for the government’s environmental efforts.

Havila Capella is one of four new ships from Havila Voyages that are capable of running with ... [+] zero-emissions for up to four hours.

The company—which operates coastal cruise ferries on Norway’s historic coastal express route—has invested huge sums of money in new vessels capable of operating with zero-emissions in the fjords.

Havila Voyages CEO Bent Martini said the government’s decision favors commercial interests over genuine environmental action, describing it as “a victory for those who didn’t dare to invest in a greener future.”

Martini emphasized that the use of biogas is not a true zero-emission solution but rather climate-neutral. He expressed concern that this delay undermines the significant investments made by companies like Havila Voyages, which had already committed substantial resources to meet the original 2026 deadline.

Additionally, Martini warned that the decision could hinder the development of future green technologies, such as hydrogen projects, by removing the immediate demand for such innovations.

A Boost For Norwegian Fjords Cruises

With very few cruise ships, if any, capable of meeting the requirements by 2026, cruise lines will surely now scramble to adapt their Norwegian fjords cruises for 2026 and beyond to include popular destinations in the Norwegian fjords.

Geiranger allows guests to experience the beautiful sail-in along the Geirangerfjord past historic farmsteads and beautiful waterfalls.

Meanwhile, Flåm offers the chance for cruise passengers to ride the world-famous Flåm Railway, often voted one of the world’s most beautiful railway journeys, and enjoy the sailing along the Aurlandsfjord.

  • Norway will Enforce 2032 Deadline for Zero Emission Cruising

Picture of Frank M

  • August 29, 2024

The Norwegian government has officially laid out a timeline for zero emissions compliance for the cruise industry and other shipping operators. It will impact all commercial passenger shipping although larger cruise vessels have been granted a more forgiving deadline.

Small Vessels have Two Years to Comply

A serene fjord scene with a calm water body, lush green mountainsides, scattered trees, and a partially cloudy sky can’t hide the somber news of the passenger overboard incident.

By 2026, vessels under 10,000 gross tons must have technology installed to meet zero emission goals, however this will initially impact only small tourist ships and passenger ferries. Larger cruise liners have until 2032 .

The requirements are for the use of alternative fuels and the ability to connect to shore power. Smaller ships will be permitted to use biogas. The government is upgrading Flam – a major cruise gateway for the Norwegian fjords – to support shore power capacity for multiple ships simultaneously.

Cruise Industry Given Six More Years to Comply

Back in 2018, Norway initially announced a 2026 deadline for zero-emission cruising for ships of all sizes. The extended timeline for large cruise vessels recognizes two factors.

Firstly, the required technology is not ready to scale up across the cruise industry. Also, a staggered compliancy period will allow communities heavily reliant on cruise tourism to continue benefitting.

The revised deadline comes after extensive discussions between Norway’s climate and environment minister, Andreas Bjelland, and cruise industry representatives.

Norway has a number of UNESCO World Heritage-listed fjords. The most popular in terms of cruise ship traffic include Aurlandsfjord and Sunnylvsfjord.

In 2023, Norway welcomed more than 6.1 million cruise guests during nearly 4,000 port calls throughout the year. To put that into context, it is more than Norway’s current population of 5.6 million.

10 Best Cruise Lines for Teens (2024)

I f you’re planning a family vacation, you’re probably considering a cruise. After all, their all-inclusive options and kid-friendly environments make it an easy way to enjoy a getaway. But what about the teens in your group? Today we’re talking all about the best cruise lines for teens so that you can plan a vacation the whole family is sure to enjoy.

Best Cruise Lines for Teens They Are Sure to Love!

Teens can have an absolutely fantastic time on cruises, but you’ll need to make sure you’re booking ones with plenty of fun activities for them. It’s a tricky balance for many teens, since they’ll be repelled by overly cheesy programs but possibly bored with the adults-centered offerings.

However, the right ones can be a teen’s paradise, granting them a safe way to explore independently while getting in just enough quality time with the rest of the family.

That’s why we’ve gathered the best cruise lines for teens. Read on to discover our top picks that are perfect for your entire family.

1. Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean is one of the most famous cruise lines, and it’s known for having some of the biggest and most intricate ships out there. But what will your teen think of their time at sea with Royal Caribbean Cruises?

Let’s start with its most notable feature: the water slides. Royal Caribbean ships have thrilling water slides and pools that most teens will love. Plus, there is a special teen club that is separated by small age groups. Older teens and preteens will have daily activities catered just for them.

In the Teen Club, they can participate in dance parties, scavenger hunts, and video games. Who knows? They may even make new friends.

But Royal Caribbean’s newest ship is what will really wow your teen. Icon of the Seas just launched last month with the largest waterpark at sea and the first suspended infinity pool at sea.

Daring teens can try the freefalling water slide at Thrill Island, or the entire family can enjoy a show in their massive AquaTheater. This is the largest cruise ship in the world, so kids of all ages will be impressed by its size and activities.

Royal Caribbean offers destination itineraries around the world. It’s the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure.

2. Disney

Disney often gets the reputation for being for younger children (and infamous “Disney Adults”), but Disney Cruise Line is one of our top picks for teens.

“Vibe” is our number-one reason for loving Disney cruises so much. This lounge is exclusively for ages 14-17 and is staffed with great counselors who run a range of relaxed and engaging activities. Here you’ll find huge video screens, a private pool, foosball tables, and a smoothie bar.

The Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Magic ships all have teen spas on board, which is one of the most unique things we’ve seen on family vacations.

Your teen will enjoy their independence on board the Disney Cruise, but you can all come back together in the evening to enjoy dinner and all-ages entertainment. Disney knows how to create engaging productions, so the nightly live shows are be a real treat.

Off-ship, you can enjoy tropical activities like snorkeling as a family or send them off to the teen camp where counselors will show them the best of your destination.

3. Norwegian

Norwegian is another great cruise line with teen-centric activities. These group programs will entertain your teens all day while you enjoy blissful relaxation (you earned it!).

Select ships feature laser tag courses, escape rooms, go-kart tracks, and teen lounges. Many of these activities come at an extra cost, so you can do a little number-crunching to see how they compare with more all-inclusive ships. Even at a higher price, your family may find that the Norwegian experience is a perfect vacation.

The teen lounge is super relaxed and allows older children to come and go as they please. For fun-in-the-sun, the Norwegian Bliss ship has multiple waterslides, a water obstacle course, and rows of lounge chairs.

One of our favorite things about Norwegian Cruise Line is their Broadway-caliber productions that are pitch-perfect entertainment for teens.

4. UnCruise

Have you ever heard of UnCruise? This line of small cruise ships feels like a hidden gem amid a sea of mega vessels. Depending on the season, you can sail various routes in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Pacific, including a great Alaska Cruise that teens will love.

UnCruise ships hold anywhere from 20 to 85 passengers, so this is a huge difference from the other options on our best cruise lines for teens list. And the ships’ smaller sizes mean they can access places others can’t.

It also means you’ll actually spend a lot of time with your teen during your cruise. Guided adventures are perfect for families with older kids. Kayaking excursions, hikes, and snorkeling are just some of the things you can look forward to.

Meals are inventive and thoughtful, time on board is relaxed, and the sightseeing is unbeatable. You can learn more about  UnCruise adventure cruises here . Although they don’t have the non-stop teen clubs and wild water parks of other cruises, the one-of-a-kind experience will become a core memory for you and your teen.

UnCruise is also one of the best cruises for college-age kids, as their bespoke experiences are perfect for young adults.

5. Carnival

Carnival Cruise Line draws a lot of budget travelers who want a fun family vacation. But they’re not just known for their (relatively) lower costs. Carnival ships offers a party atmosphere that’s perfect for teens.

Probably their best ship for teens is the Carnival Mardis Gras, which has a rollercoaster. If that alone isn’t enough to get your teens “on board,” how about a huge arcade, loads of food, and (on select ships) a trampoline park?

Nightly entertainment is more of your standard cruise-ship fare, but it’s well done and should be engaging for the entire family. Routes can take you through the Caribbean, Hawaii, Alaska, or international destinations.

And with regular sales and various booking options, you’ll be able to find a cruise that fits your wallet and your family’s vacation style.

6. Celebrity

Celebrity Cruise Line most often caters to an older crowd, but it’s still a lot of fun for teens – especially if you’re looking for a nice balance between family time and at-sea thrills.

On Celebrity ships, teens get an all-star treatment with pool parties, an exclusive lounge, and game tournaments. When it’s time to come together as a family, you’ll be treated to great food and top-notch service.

Celibrity’s spa menu has special services for 13-17 year olds, plus side-by-side treatments for a parent-kid spa day.

We also like how Celebrity offers immersive sightseeing programs at their destinations. Your entire family can join small group walking tours through Europe, treetop expeditions in Costa Rica, and wildlife viewing in remote locales.

7. Princess Cruises

With fewer high-octane thrills, Princess Cruises are ideal for simple pleasures. We’re thinking pool-side lounging, great dining options, classic group games, and sports activities.

But this is the perfect place for teens who may not be into giant water slides and over-the-top amenities. Many ships have a “Rock the Boat” party, video game tournaments, movies, and even dance classes.

If your family is seeking bigger thrills, their newest ship, Sun Princess , has a  hang-gliding experience, an obstacle course, and a glistening new teens lounge with a dance floor and video games.

We also recommend Princess Cruises if you are planning group travel with older family members . There are plenty of places to find peace and quiet, lounge with a good book, or sit back and watch the kids play.

8. MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises are a great budget-friendly option for family travel, as they offer great sales where kids cruise for free.

But it’s not a “cheap” experience. Sure, it’s not as flashy as the huge vessels with waterparks and roller coasters, but family members of all ages will have a great time on MSC Cruise Ships. There are pools, fantastic food, family entertainment, and themed decor.

MSC departs from Miami and New York, and they offer fun destinations like the Mediterranean and Bahamas. Their short cruises are an excellent option for families who want fun at sea but are short on time.

9. Lindblad Expeditions

True adventurers will love Lindblad Expeditions , which partners with National Geographic to offer immersive, nature-centered excursions the entire family will love. With fewer than 200 passengers on board, these cruises are super personal and hands-on.

Teens can become National Geographic Global Explorers at some of the most awe-inspiring destinations, like Alaska and the Galapagos. Field educators will guide you through the expeditions and even offer photography courses for future Nat Geo photographers.

You won’t find your typical cruise ship on-board entertainment, and your teen may miss constant wi-fi access. However, there is complimentary Starlink-enabled wi-fi available for all guests as well as internet packages available for purchase (with the exception of the Delfin II ship).

We think the complimentary wi-fi will cover their basic needs, but once they’re immersed in these incredible locations, they’ll soon forget their phones even exist. Plus, you and your teen can thoroughly enjoy all of the outdoor activities, so it’s great for family bonding.

10. AmaWaterways & Adventures by Disney

If you love Disney’s unique experiences but want a more authentic on-the-ground vacation, then their partnership with AmaWaterways will be perfect.

Adventures by Disney offers various river cruises through Europe – a great option for families wanting to see Europe in comfort while knowing the little details are all taken care of.

Adventure guides will take you on off-ship excursions, like farm tours, ziplining, castle tours, and bike excursions. Or, opt for one of their winter cruises that include stops at Europe’s famous Christmas Markets .

The ship will sail by night, giving you and your family a sufficient amount of time to explore various destinations. It’s great family bonding, but your teen can still have some independence on board as they enjoy karaoke, movie nights, and exclusive dinners for young guests. All of this is done with a touch of Disney magic that is perfect for families.

Norwegian Cruise Line's newest home port might surprise you

Gene Sloan

Would you sign up for a cruise that starts in Helsinki?

Norwegian Cruise Line is betting on it.

The world's third-largest cruise brand on Thursday unveiled plans for summer voyages from the Finnish capital — something that almost no other line offers.

The sailings, which will kick off in 2026, will be the first Norwegian has offered from Helsinki in the 58-year history of the brand. They will also put it among a small number of lines that have ever offered cruises from Helsinki.

For the coming year, only one small cruise brand, France-based Ponant Cruises, will be operating cruises from Helsinki, and only a handful. One other small cruise brand, Windstar Cruises , plans a short series of three sailings from Helsinki in 2026.

In its announcement, which was posted online , Norwegian said the 1,936-passenger Norwegian Sun would sail Baltic voyages out of Helsinki starting in June 2026 through October 2026.

Related: The 5 best places you can visit on a Norwegian ship

Ranging from seven to 10 nights, the sailings will mostly be one-way trips to Copenhagen that will include port stops in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Germany.

One of the sailings, at the end of the season, will be a one-way trip from Helsinki to Southampton, England.

Related: Baltic vs. Mediterranean: Which European cruise should you choose?

Helsinki is often a port stop on Baltic cruises, but it's traditionally not been a home port. Baltic cruises typically start or end in European cruise hubs such as Copenhagen, Southampton and Amsterdam.

Norwegian's launch of Baltic cruises from Helsinki will, notably, allow cruisers to create extended Baltic trips that combine several days of exploring Helsinki and its surroundings by land with a sailing around the region.

The trips will likely appeal to cruisers who want to spend more time in Helsinki and its surroundings than the few hours in the city that are typically included in a Baltic cruise.

The new sailings for the summer of 2026 include:

  • Seven-night voyages from Helsinki to Copenhagen with calls at Tallinn, Estonia; Stockholm; Klaipeda, Lithuania; Gdynia, Poland; Warnemunde, Germany (from which cruisers can reach Berlin); and Kiel, Germany (for tours to Hamburg, Germany)
  • Nine-night voyages from Helsinki to Copenhagen with calls at the same six ports
  • A single 10-night sailing from Helsinki to Southampton with calls at Tallinn, Stockholm, Klaipeda, Gdynia, Warnemunde, Kiel and Copenhagen

In tandem with the new sailings from Helsinki to Copenhagen, Norwegian Sun also will operate one-way sailings back from Copenhagen to Helsinki from June 2026 to October 2026. The sailings will visit the same ports.

The one-way voyages from Copenhagen will allow cruisers to add extra days in Finland to the end of their voyages.

Related: Why your next dream trip should be a Norwegian cruise in Europe

Norwegian Sun will be among eight Norwegian ships operating in Europe for the summer of 2026. The trips will begin and end at 11 different embarkation ports that — in addition to Helsinki, Copenhagen and Southampton — include Le Havre, France; Barcelona; Ravenna and Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) in Italy; and Istanbul.

Other home ports in Europe for 2026 will include Piraeus, Greece (the port for Athens).

Among other unusual new sailings planned for 2026 are 10- and 11-day voyages between Reykjavik and Southampton that will allow passengers to extend their cruise vacations with a land stay in Iceland. The voyages will take place on the 2,348-passenger Norwegian Star.

During some of the voyages between Reykjavik and Southampton, Norwegian Star will stop at Leirvik, Norway — another first in Norwegian's 58-year history.

Norwegian Star's 11-day Iceland sailings also will include an overnight stay in Reykjavik.

Fares for the new Baltic sailings out of Helsinki start at $1,387 per person, including taxes and fees for a seven-night trip.
