If you’re visiting the Windy City, you’ll probably spend your days checking out museums and tourist attractions like the Bean and the lakefront. But when the sun goes down, what are the most fun things to do in Chicago at night?

Chicago was my home for eight years, and I love sharing my favorite ideas. Evening activities in Chicago vary dramatically based on time of year.

In the summer, you can find a lot of cool things to do since the warmer weather is more conducive to late night activities. But during the frigid winter temperatures, almost all of the best places to go at night are indoors.

Here’s a rundown of my most recommended suggestions for nightlife, comedy clubs, shopping, restaurants, and other awesome points of interest for those seeking to go out in Chicago at night.

Fun Things To Do in Chicago at Night: Tourist Attractions

Which Chicago tourist attractions are open at night? Start with the free Millennium Park and the famous metallic Bean sculpture in downtown Chicago.

The park technically closes at 11 pm everyday, though it’s hard to imagine anyone caring if you stroll by at midnight to grab a couple selfies with the Bean.

Millennium Park also has free outdoor evening concerts quite often during the summer.

The Willis Tower Skydeck remains open until 10 pm everyday and midnight on Saturdays. Go up there and conquer your fear of heights by walking out onto the clear Skydeck ledge!

Another of the best places to go in Chicago at night is the Hancock Tower. The observation deck takes guests up to the 94th floor until 11 pm.

The Signature Room, a classy bar on the 95th floor that offers the same awesome views, unfortunately closed late last year.

Note – these times are accurate as of this writing in 2024; check venue websites for updated information, as hours may change.

Most Chicago museums close before night time, but some have later hours on specific days of the week. For instance, the renowned Art Institute of Chicago stays open until 8 on Thursday evening.

The Chicago History Museum, Adler Planetarium, and Museum of Science & Industry all have occasional “Happy Hour” events that go until 9 or 10 pm.

And the Shedd Aquarium has a ton of “ After Hours ” events for adults until 10 pm, like salsa dances and game nights.

The Lincoln Park Zoo is open late on some Friday nights during the summer for adult events that offer alcohol. Not a bad date idea!

While the zoo is normally free, paid tickets are usually required for these events . The zoo also has craft brew tastings and wine fests for those over 21 during the summer.

Another great summer option for those under 21: Navy Pier. That’s where you’ll find a big shopping center and a giant ferris wheel.

On Wednesday and Saturday nights during the summer, this touristy part of the city has fireworks shows after dark.

And finally, while finding fun things to do in Chicago at night during the winter is a real challenge because of the cold weather, the city operates a couple of outdoor ice skating rinks, one at the Bean and one at Wrigley Field.

You can rent skates and glide around the ice as late as 10 pm, depending on the day.

Night Time Guided Tours in Chicago

Organized tours are an especially good thing to do for families and other Chicago visitors under 21, who won’t be admitted to many of the bars and venues listed in this article.

Believe it or not, there’s a wide range of options for night time tours in the Windy City.

You can soar above the city to check out the night lights on a helicopter tour ! You can go on a “ haunted Segway tour ” that visits several supposedly haunted spots in Chicago. You can take a dinner cruise on Lake Michigan .

There’s a Chicago Favorites Ultimate Food & Walking Tour in the evening that gives guests a chance to try deep dish pizza, a Chicago Italian beef sandwich, and a Chicago hot dog. All the signature Chicago foods on the same tour!

Or you can join a “Chicago Crimes” tour that covers Chicago’s mob history at spots like the Biograph Theater, where John Dillinger was famously taken down by the FBI in 1934.

Cool Things To Do in Chicago at Night: Bars and Nightlife

The Green Mill is a must-visit for Chicago tourists. It’s the old-time jazz club (opened in 1907!) that Al Capone used to frequent.

Today, they still play music straight out of the ‘30s and ‘40s. You’ll totally be transported to a different era inside here.

The city also has a number of good blues bars for fans of that genre. Consider Kingston Mines, Blue Chicago, B.L.U.E.S., or Buddy Guy’s Legends.

For cool, hipster dive bars, check out Skylark in Pilsen, Slippery Slope in Logan Square, or Rainbo in Wicker Park.

For popular breweries, try Revolution Brewing in Logan Square, Goose Island in Lincoln Park, or Half Acre in Lincoln Square. For LGBT hotspots, hit up the Boystown section of the Lakeview neighborhood.

And for karaoke, try Alice’s bar in Avondale. They’re open late and offer karaoke several nights a week, with a crowd of regulars who are really good singers. Bring your A game if you plan on belting out a tune here!

Late Night Chicago Restaurants and Shopping Options

The Windy City is home to one of the largest shopping areas in the country. Known as the Magnificent Mile, the region stretches for about a mile on Michigan Avenue just north of the Chicago River.

The Mag Mile encompasses more than 450 retailers of all kinds.

The large Water Tower Place mall is open until 9 pm everyday except Sunday. As for the shops not located in malls, each store on the Mag Mile sets its own hours. Most close by 9 pm, but you can find exceptions.

The Macy’s at Water Tower is open until 10 on weekends (and even later during the holiday season.)

While you’re in the area, walk past the Tribune Tower , which has become a quirky attraction thanks to the chunks of famous worldwide structures (Great Wall of China, the Alamo, Berlin Wall) embedded into its exterior.

When it comes to food, Chicago has some of the most incredible culinary destinations in the country, many of which are open into the late evening.

I couldn’t even begin to describe all of the award-winning Chicago restaurants, but this article from Eater is a good start.

I will mention a few personal favorite food spots that are open late: the acclaimed West Loop hotspot Girl & the Goat (open until 11pm), Piece Brewery & Pizza in Wicker Park, the comfort food of Little Bad Wolf in Andersonville, Lady Gregory’s Irish Pub in Andersonville, the modern taqueria Big Star in Wicker Park, and the upscale bar food at Longman & Eagle in Logan Square.

Also get that chocolate cake shake at Portillo’s and try a deep dish pizza somewhere!

And for very late dining after the bars close, there’s always the Wiener’s Circle – the wacky hot dog stand (open until 4 am) where the employees berate and insult the customers.

Other Fun Things To Do in Chicago at Night: Sports, Concerts, Comedy

Chicago gets a ton of great concerts. That’s one of the reasons I moved there, in fact. I got to see legends like Paul McCartney, Prince, Leonard Cohen, Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett, Madonna, and more.

The city has some famous old venues, from the venerable Chicago Theatre to smaller clubs like the Empty Bottle. Do a Pollstar.com search for “Chicago” to check out the concerts on the dates of your visit.

Sports are always an option. Check out a Cubs game at Wrigley Field if you can snag a ticket. White Sox tix are easier to come by, and the view of the Chicago skyline from the Sox’ park is fantastic.

If you’re here during the winter, take in a Bulls and Blackhawks game.

And finally, don’t overlook the fantastic comedy scene in Chicago. So many Saturday Night Live regulars got their start at the improv venues of Chicago.

Second City is the obvious place to take in a show, but also consider some of the smaller theaters around the city, as well as regular theater shows like Blue Man Group. Here’s a lengthier guide to Chicago’s comedy scene .

Best Places To Go in Chicago at Night By Yourself

This section is just for my fellow solo travelers! Going out at night alone in a new city can be a bit intimidating, but many of the earlier suggestions are great places to go in Chicago by yourself.

The Willis Tower or Hancock Tower can be enjoyed alone, though you’ll want to have a selfie stick or ask someone to snap a quick photo of you while you’re up there.

All of the museums are great for exploring by yourself, especially the Art Institute. You could spend hours in there checking out the famous paintings and sculptures.

Theater shows and concerts are great solo events, and so are the organized walking tours.

Going to bars alone can be trickier, since it’s not always easy to meet people, but places like the Green Mill or Alice’s might be your best bets for a solo late-night excursion.

Also be on the lookout for summer street festivals. Several neighborhoods across Chicago have weekend street fairs with food and live music going well into the night.

My favorite street fests in Chicago include Taste of Randolph, Wicker Park Fest, Roscoe Village Burger Fest, Do Division Street Fest, Wells Street Art Festival, Midsommarfest, and Market Days. Not to mention the huge Lollapalooza festival each August.

No matter when you visit, you’ll find several cool things to do in Chicago at any time of year, whether alone or with a group of friends.

Top Things To Do In Chicago At Night

As a resident of Chicago, I can tell you there's plenty to do at night if you know where to look.

Whether it's music, fine dining, theatre, comedy, tours, or more, you'll have your choice of activities.

One of my favorites is to head to Second City to see comedy improv. There's excitement about the possibly of seeing the next comedy great.

Some of the top comedians from my childhood performed there such as John Candy, Bill Murray, and Chris Farley. More recent favorites have been Steve Carrell, Amy Poehler, and Tina Fey.

As Chicago is the city where "the blues found its voice," I'm always able to find live blues music at venues such as Kingston Mines and Buddy's Guy's Legends.

There are dozens of other things to do at night, so I've written this post to give you some ideas of where to look. It includes free, family-friendly, and seasonal attractions and activities.

TOP 10 ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS AT NIGHT IN CHICAGO

Below are our top 10 recommendations for things to do at night in Chicago. Some of the items here would also fit in the other sections. 

Within each listing, we provide links for a more in-depth exploration of each selection.

1. Take a Chicago Night Tour

Ghost tours, a stroll on the Riverwalk, and architecture cruises on the Chicago River are just some of the great nighttime tours that you could take.

2. See Live Performance

The Chicago Theatre District offers a variety of live performances at renowned venues.

The Chicago Theatre presents top-billing shows and concerts.

The Goodman Theatre is the largest and oldest non-profit theatre in Chicago, and the Broadway in Chicago playhouses present New York’s most popular musicals.*

Other theatres include Cadillac Palace Theatre, Briar Street Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre, or the Auditorium Theatre.

3. View the City from Above

See the Chicago skyline from a birds-eye view and marvel at the architecture as the city lights up.

The main Observation Decks in Chicago are the SkyDeck Chicago and the John Hancock 360 Observatory .

Both are included for free on at least a few tourist attraction passes .

4. Take a Cruise

Several tour companies in the Chicago area offer cruises throughout and around the city.

Some of these cruises are held after dark or at sunset, allowing you to see the city skyline from a unique perspective as all the buildings begin to light up the night sky.

There are also dinner cruises available which include either a 3-course meal or a buffet, music, dancing, and of course a cruise after dark.

5. Cheer on a Sports Team

No matter what time of year, there’s a game going on somewhere!

Be part of the Crosstown Classic, where Northsiders cheer on the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Southsiders root for the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

Is baseball not in season? The Blackhawks hit the ice at the United Center fighting for another Stanley Cup!

And who can deny a chance to see the Chicago Bears play at Soldier Field?

6. Experience Live Music

There are endless choices for live music in a city as large as Chicago, from local bands at hundreds of bars and restaurants to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , one of the most renowned symphonies in the world.

For more classical music, The Grant Park Music Festival is the nation’s only free outdoor music series of its kind, hosted at Millennium Park ’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion every year!

You can also see concerts from some of the biggest names in the music industry at some of the following venues:

The Chicago Theatre has plays, musicals, concerts, dance, live storytelling, and so much more.

The Concord Music Hall is a historic mid-sized venue that hosts concerts, comedy shows, and other live entertainment.

The Vic Theatre is another historic theatre, one that hosts live music and comedy shows.

You can also visit the House of Blues which in addition to live music has a bar and a Southern-inspired restaurant, or the United Center which has sports, concerts, musicals, comedy shows, and other entertainment.

7. Stay After Hours at a Museum

Many of the top museums in Chicago offer after-hours, adults-only events with cocktails, special tours, and smaller crowds at the exhibits.

You could look to Adler At Night , MSI After Hours , or Shedd After Hours for nighttime activities.

The Museum of Contemporary Art also offers screenings, talks, theatre, live art, and more.

In the past, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tuesdays on the Terrace offered free concerts from Chicago's music community between June and August. It is hoped that will return this year.

With access to the museum, there are many MCA In Progress Evening Exhibits that are free (or cheap) to visit.

Once in a while the Museum of Science and Industry's Science Snoozeum takes place offering kids a chance to explore the museum, take part in activities, and spend the night.

A similar program can be found st the Field Museum Dozin' with the Dinos , where families and groups with kids ages 6-12 can spend the night.

The Notebaert Nature Museum's Bunking with the Butterflies event allows friends and family to spend a night at the museum, meet live animals, and take part in nature and science activities.

8. Grab a Bite to Eat

What else should you do when visiting a new city? If nothing else, make sure you try some of the famous Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza .

9. Laugh at a Comedy Show

The Windy City is famous for generating some of the biggest legends of comedy.

You’re likely to recognize some celebrities, and may even catch them performing!

10. Walk Along the River

No, really! The Chicago Riverwalk is a hidden gem of Chicago Downtown.

Open 24 hours, you can stroll along six blocks of a continuously landscaped path along the Chicago River any time of night.

From State Street to Lake Street, each block has its own identity, separated by overhead bridges.

Nights Out In a Park

Wherever you might be in the city, you are not far from a local park that is hosting a neighborhood event.

Chicago holds over 2000 unique events at 77 different neighborhood parks throughout the year, and many are free.

You may find a movie showing, a community bonfire, a seasonally-themed party for the whole family, and even a service project.

Explore the Harold Washington Library

One of the nation’s largest and most impressive libraries is located in downtown Chicago and is open until 8 pm.

Be sure to take in the architecture on the outside and inside of the building, as well as the glass roof of the Winter Garden on the 9 th floor.

You can also create some art for free in the Maker Lab on the 3 rd floor, and there are usually free art exhibits for the adults and storytimes in the Children’s Library.

Free Music Mondays at Empty Bottle

One of Chicago’s top locations for indie music is the Empty Bottle, located in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood.

There is music every night of the week, and Monday nights are usually free, featuring local and national musical acts.

Summer Festivals

Chicago is famous for its free summer festivals.

Throughout the summer, you can find the House Music Festival, Gospel Fest, Blues Fest, the Taste of Chicago, Jazz Fest, and World Music Festival.

Music goes well into the night and features some of the top acts in each genre, taking place on the biggest outdoor stages in downtown Chicago.

On a smaller scale, most of Chicago’s neighborhoods host a local street festival throughout the warmer months, some of which are free admission.

Ice Skating in the Winter

From mid-November to mid-March, whenever the weather permits, Millennium Park hosts the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink, free and open to the public.

If you bring your own skates, you won’t have to spend a dime to skate outdoors, well into the night in the beautiful downtown under the lights.

Head to Logan Square for Free Music, Comedy, or DJs

The Logan Square neighborhood is a trendy scene for nightlife, and two bars, in particular, have no-cover events almost nightly.

Cole’s Bar is always free and hosts comedy, DJs, and live music.

Just down the street is the Whistler, which also hosts DJs and music that often caters to the jazz crowd.

Book Readings

Bookstores, libraries, and cafes in Chicago often host a number of literary events.

Book release parties, book readings, and author readings with local (and even nationally-known) writers are great ways to get to know an author or literary work in an intimate setting.

One unique bookstore to check out is City Lit Books in Logan Square, which hosts these events plus open mic nights.

Acoustic Music at Coffeehouses

If you would rather hear music at quieter volumes, many of Chicago’s cafes and coffee shops have acoustic music performed live in the evenings.

Whether it is a small jazz trio or a singer-songwriter with an acoustic guitar, you can discover new local talent almost every night in Chicago.

Check out the coffee and wine bar Drunken Bean for a relaxing atmosphere of jazz, or Café Mustache for an eclectic mix of beats, karaoke, and live music.

Explore Chicago’s Famous Downtown

There is so much architecture and unique landscape to see downtown.

The Bean and nearby Crown Fountain in Millennium Park may be the most well-known attraction, and you can also stroll through Lurie Garden and Maggie Daley Park.

Head south a few blocks and visit one of the world’s largest fountains, Buckingham Fountain, in Grant Park.

If you are at or near Navy Pier , you can also enjoy a fireworks display every Wednesday and Saturday night all throughout the summer, and right on the lake!

Get Free Access to Popular Attractions

OK. Admittedly purchasing a tourist attraction pass isn't free, in fact, these passes can seem expensive.

The object of these all-inclusive passes is to experience as many things in a day as you have time for but save money doing it.

These passes are sold in increments of days, and the longer the pass the less the daily cost is.

So, if you plan efficiently, you will end up getting free access to several tours and attractions. 

FAMILY-FRIENDLY NIGHT ACTIVITIES

Many suggestions made in the previous sections are appropriate for families, but there are lots more fun things for kids in Chicago at night.

Many of these attractions are conveniently located in the Loop and are perfect for families and, at the same time, great for night owls.

Meet the Blue Man Group

The Blue Man Group mixes music, humor, and technology to create an electric experience that has captured audiences of all ages worldwide for almost 40 years!

Spend the Night at Museum

Many of the museums offer special events where the kids can spend the night amongst the exhibits - whether it is dinosaurs or butterflies depends on the museum.

They offer kid-friendly activities and tours of the museums and an unforgettable way to experience some of the iconic sites of Chicago.

Try an Escape Room

Escape rooms are one of the most popular forms of group entertainment.

Guests enter into pulse-pounding environments and work together to find clues to escape the room within a certain period of time. 

You and your friends or family must work together to find clues and solve puzzles in a set amount of time. If you succeed, you get the ‘keys’ to get out of the room.

If you fail, well, they still let you out and you will have had a great experience!

Family-Friendly Improv Comedy

Chicago is a popular destination for comedy lovers, and it is double the fun when the comedy is made up on the spot!

One of Chicago’s top improv comedy options is ComedySportz, in which two comedy teams “compete” for laughs, encouraging the audience’s participation and suggestions.

The comedy is safe for the whole family; in fact, the comedy teams are penalized in their competition if they accidentally say anything naughty!

Shows take place on Friday at 8 pm and on Saturday at 6 pm.

Cosmic Bowling

Bowling is always a great option for a family outing, and it is even more fun when the alley goes dark!

When a bowling alley goes “cosmic”, the lights go down, black lights glow, and the music gets everyone dancing in between their turns.

Waveland Bowl is open 9 am to midnight every night of the week.

With snacks and dinner options at Alley Dogs, the family can spend the whole evening eating and bowling under black lights!

Family Fun at Navy Pier

No list of evening activities for the whole family would be complete without highlighting Navy Pier.

One of the most visible images along Chicago’s lakeshore is the Centennial Wheel, a giant Ferris wheel in Pier Park that gives an incredible view of the city- especially with the glittering lights at night.

There's also a Carousel, tea cup rides, and a wave swinger, amongst other amusement park rides.

Navy Pier hosts the Chicago Children’s Museum and the Chicago Shakespeare Theater .

During the summertime- stick around for the fireworks that are on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Tip : Admission into Navy Pier is free; each ride will require paid tickets. Parking can be pricey, so be on the lookout for the seasonally-operated Free Navy Pier Trolley Service, which stops at the Grand/State Red Line stop.

No. Luggage is not allowed aboard the Mercury vessels. Please leave your luggage at your hotel or check your bags in at a hotel near the dock (be sure to confirm in advance the ability for the hotel to accommodate you). Yes, strollers may be brought aboard and will be folded and stored in the indoor salon for the duration of the cruise. They are not allowed on the deck. Please note, children must be removed from strollers before boarding.

In accordance with ADA guidelines, we welcome service dogs onboard. The service animal must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered while in public places unless these devices interfere with the service animal's work or the person's disability prevents use of these devices. At this time the Riverwalk does not offer any elevators. For those who need ADA ramps, you may access the Riverwalk via the ADA ramp at State Street and Wacker Drive within the Vietnam Memorial Park. Then just follow the Riverwalk to the East under the Michigan Avenue Bridge. Our Ticket Office is marked with a blue awning. Our stairway offers handrails, and shade from the sun. For guests needing special vehicle drop-off assistance, click here for Mobility Assistance directions.

For safety reasons, motorized scooters and electric wheelchairs cannot be accommodated aboard the ship. Guests who can transfer may use the company's manual wheelchair, based upon availability. Please note guests using manual wheelchairs must be accompanied by individuals who are capable of assisting/lifting the wheelchair over the boat’s threshold. Under Federal law and due to special marine safety construction guidelines, USCG-regulated small vessels are not subject to land-based architectural configuration requirements. You will want to bring your own  refillable water bottle  with you.

I never leave home on a trip without my  Bobble filtration bottle .  The 18.5-ounce size is perfect for hiking and it fits nicely in the pocket of a backpack.

When filled with water, it is not too heavy to carry. And the charcoal filter ensures fresh clean water whenever you fill the Bobble.

Perhaps you are traveling a long distance and packing space is a premium in your suitcase, or in your car.

• Yes. All boats have a full bar available onboard with cocktails, wine, craft beer, water, cold brew and more, as well as locally sourced snacks available for purchase.
• What sets your tours apart from the others?

We are the only tour that partners with the Chicago Architecture Center to offer the official Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise aboard Chicago's First Lady. All of our tours are given by experienced, volunteer docents who receive hundreds of hours of training from the Chicago Architecture Center before guiding the river cruise tour.

• How long is the tour?
• Each tour is 90 minutes.
• Do I need to buy tickets in advance?

Advance reservations are recommended as many tours sell out.

• Is there assigned seating?

All seating is general admission, though proper distancing measures are put in place to ensure the safety of each party outside of their own groups, per city ordinances. There is enough seating for all guests to have a seat outside. While seat numbers are printed on the tickets, you can ignore these as they are not valid.

• Are tours offered in any languages other than English?

We are happy to offer free foreign language audio guides in Spanish, French, Japanese and Korean. Scan the QR code onboard for instructions. Mobile data for app download required.

• Do I have to print my tickets?
• You do not have to print your tickets. You can show your mobile ticket to our dock attendant with your smartphone, or you can have your tickets printed at the dockside will call window (be sure to bring a photo ID and your confirmation number).
• Does the boat go on the lake?

No, the tour is only on the Chicago River. If you’d like to take a lake tour, please check out our sister cruise line Mercury, Chicago’s Skyline Cruiseline .

• Are there restrooms onboard?

Yes, all the boats have restrooms onboard. There are also wheelchair accessible bathrooms on the Classic Lady, Leading Lady, and Emerald Lady. Please note: the restrooms close 15 minutes before the end of the tour for safety reasons.

• Can I bring luggage onboard?
• Due to security reasons, luggage cannot be brought onboard. There is not an area to store your luggage dockside either. We recommend having your hotel hold your luggage.
• Can I bring a stroller onboard?
• Yes, you can bring a stroller onboard. Children must be removed from strollers before boarding. Strollers will be folded and stored in the salon during the cruise.
• Are there changing tables onboard?

The Classic Lady, Leading Lady, and Emerald Lady have changing tables onboard in the family restroom. The Little Lady, Fair Lady, and First Lady do not have changing tables onboard.

• Are dogs allowed onboard?

Only service dogs are allowed onboard. Our sister company, Mercury , offers the popular Canine Cruise on summer weekends.

• How can I get to your dock without using stairs?

There are two ways to reach our dock along Chicago’s Riverwalk without using stairs: 1. On foot via the ramp located on Wacker Drive at State Street. 2. Vehicle drop-off area on Lower Wacker Drive. Visit our location page for more information.

• Can I trade my tickets for a different date/time?
• No, all tickets are nonrefundable and nonexchangeable.
• Do you cruise rain or shine?
• Yes, we cruise rain or shine. All the boats have two levels – the top deck is open-air, and the lower deck is an enclosed, climate-controlled salon. Each salon is surrounded by large windows so you can stay comfortable while still taking in the magnificent views. Tour commentary is broadcast over speakers on both levels.
• Are the boats wheelchair accessible?

Chicago's Leading Lady, Chicago’s Classic Lady, and Chicago's Emerald Lady are wheelchair-accessible. These vessels cruise at the 9am, 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 5pm departure times. When boarding, guests cross two ramps and enter through a 36-inch-wide opening (doorway). Crew members will assist in guiding the wheelchair across the gangway. Please present yourself to our staff if you prefer to board before general boarding starts. Guests unable to climb stairs to the upper deck may choose to sit in the open-air bow or the enclosed, climate-controlled salon with large windows. For safety reasons, motorized scooters and electric wheelchairs cannot be accommodated. Guests who are able to transfer may use the company's manual wheelchair based on availability. Chicago Archaeopteryx : If you’ve ever struggled to explain to your child how that pigeon on your windowsill is related to ancient dinosaurs, now you can show them: The Field Museum is now home to a rare Archaeopteryx fossil , the earliest known avian dinosaur. Featuring feathers, hollow bones, a long tail and 50 teeth, the fossil is the museum’s most significant acquisition since Sue the T. rex. Its display features a hologram-like, 3D rendering of what the Archaeopteryx might have looked like when it was alive. National Mural Day: Tuesday marked the official day, but there’s no expiration on appreciating free public art. Chicago Dogs Opening Weekend: The Chicago Dogs will face the Gary SouthShore Rail Cats during its opening weekend, kicking off a new season for the 6-year-old independent minor league team. The 12 Best Things to Do in Chicago

Famously known as “the Second City” (meaning second in population to New York), I feel like Chicago is often overlooked by travelers. It sees a fraction of the visitors LA and NYC receive, which is a shame, as it’s one of my favorite cities in the world .

Chicago is chock-full of world-class institutions, Michelin-starred restaurants, awe-inducing architecture, and verdant parks. There is a lot to do here and the city has a really rich history. I think more people should visit.

Sure, the winters are brutal. But, come spring, Chicago blossoms into a dynamic urban landscape of street life, outdoor cafés, and sunny parks when locals take over the outdoors to enjoy the few months of nice weather. (I don’t think you can really beat Chicago in the summer.)

To help you plan your visit, here’s my list of the best things to do in Chicago:

One of the first things I do when I arrive in a city is take a walking tour. They’re a great way to see the main sights, get the lay of the land, and connect with an expert local guide who can answer all my questions. Free Chicago Walking Tours hosts regular free tours that can introduce you to the city. You’ll get to see many of the coolest buildings in the city while also learning about the history of Chicago. The tour lasts a few hours. Be sure to tip the guide at the end!

For a more unique tour, try the Gangsters and Ghosts Tour . You’ll learn all about Chicago’s dark side and creepy past as you explore the Chicago Loop. The tour lasts two hours and really talks about one of the pivotal times in Chicago’s history. Even if you’re not a history buff like me, you’ll get a lot out of it.  

Located downtown, these gigantic parks provide a great place to hang out, have a picnic, or go for a run. People play chess here when the weather is nice and, during the summer, there are a lot of free concerts and events here. The larger Grant Park stretches along Chicago’s waterfront, while Millennium Park is the subsection where the famous “Chicago Bean” sculpture is located. This iconic work of public art is a must-see. And, starting at noon on the first and third Saturdays from April through November, the Chicago Cultural Center hosts walking tours focusing on the art of Millennium Park. It’s really interesting. I love strolling through the park or just chilling here with a good book on a nice day.  

To beat the crowds, skip a weekend visit as the place gets packed. Instead, go on a Monday or Thursday evening (they’re open late on Thursdays). You’ll have the place virtually to yourself.

Chicago is an architecture lover’s dream. The very best way to take in its famed buildings is via a river cruise . This way, you can sit back and cruise down the canals while an expert guide provides context for what you’re looking at. The guides will give you a detailed history of the architecture. Some of the buildings you’ll see on the boat ride include the Tribune Tower, 333 West Wacker, Navy Pier, the Willis Tower, the Wrigley Building, and Marina City, among others. All in all, there are about 50 structures to see on this fascinating tour, and I promise, it’s much more interesting than it sounds!  

Often nicknamed “Mag Mile,” this stretch along Michigan Avenue from the Chicago River to Oak Street is known for its upscale designer boutiques. In fact, rent here is the third highest in the US (after Fifth Avenue in New York City and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills). Even if you don’t want to blow your budget shopping, it’s still an experience to stroll along the avenue and take in the sights and the people, and enjoy the view of the Chicago River. There are several landmarks and attractions along the way too, including the 360 Chicago Observation Deck for expansive views over the city (more on this below).  

If you’re visiting the city with kids (or you’re a kid at heart), head to the massive Shedd Aquarium. It’s the third-largest aquarium in the Western hemisphere and home to over 32,000 animals. They have turtles, penguins, sea otters, snakes, sharks, and more. They really emphasize education here so you’ll learn a ton while you roam the different exhibitions. You can even pay extra to do things like feed penguins and sharks, and they also host all kinds of fun evening events (such as live music after hours). I absolutely love coming here. Just make sure to book your ticket in advance as they do get busy and sell out!

To beat the crowds, skip the weekend and visit during the week instead. Also, try and visit right when it opens (especially Wednesday-Friday). It’s usually quieter then.

One of the biggest museums in the world, the Field houses extensive collections spanning anthropology, geology, botany, and zoology. Some important collections include the displays of taxidermied animals, a wing dedicated to astronomy, and fascinating artifacts from ancient Egypt. I recommend planning to spend at least 3-4 hours to really take it all in.

1400 S. Dusable Lake Shore Drive, (312) 922-9410, fieldmuseum.org. Open daily 9am-5pm (last admission is at 4pm). Basic admission is $30 USD . Special exhibitions are an additional charge (which varies), though you can get an all-access pass for $43 USD.  

Chicago is a skyscraper city, including a few rather iconic towers. Located atop what was formerly known as the John Hancock Building and now (uninspiringly) called 875 N. Michigan, the 360-degree viewing deck a thousand feet up and allows visitors to get the best view of the Windy City and Lake Michigan. You can even grab a pint at the Cloud Bar, which serves beer from Moody Tongue, a local brewery.

If you’re a thrill seeker and want more than just the view, sign up for Tilt. This part of the observation deck is where you can stand in front of a glass window, which then tilts forward, until it appears you’re looking directly down at the street, 94 floors below.

Just make sure to check the weather before you go so you will actually have a view to enjoy. Additionally, if you want to beat the crowds, come early (before 10am).

If you really want to indulge, hop on a Chicago Pizza Tour , on which you’ll get to sample all the varieties on offer in town. Tours start at $49 USD.  

Stretching from Lake Michigan to Lake Street, the 1.25-mile Riverwalk along the Chicago River makes for a fun stroll. Along the way, you’ll not only get fantastic views of the river and city, but you’ll encounter a legion of waterfront restaurants, cafés, and bars. There’s a ton of public art and green space too (great for picnicking and people-watching). It’s the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the moment in this Midwestern metropolis, but if you prefer a more active experience, there are also lots of aquatic activities here too (such as kayaking or taking a river cruise).  

The neighborhood of Pilsen was founded in 1878 by Czech immigrants, who named the area after the fourth-largest city in the Czech Republic, where pilsner beer was born. The Czechs may be gone now, but today Pilsen is Chicago’s main Latino neighborhood, particularly Mexicans from the Michoacán region. Today you can wander the area, eating some of the best tacos while taking in the vibrant street art.  

The Second City is one of the most popular and well-known improv troupes in the country. It’s where greats like Bill Murray, John Candy, Catherine O’Hara, Steve Carell, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler all cut their teeth. They put on regular performances and also host all kinds of special events. They even host workshops and classes if you want to give improv a try yourself. Just be sure to get your tickets in advance as the most popular shows sell out fast.

Home of the Cubs, Wrigley Field, on Chicago’s North Side, is smack in the middle of town. It also happens to be one of the oldest baseball stadiums in the United States (it opened in 1914). If you’re in Chicago during the baseball seasons (April to October) and the Cubs are in town, do yourself a favor and go to a game. It’s one of the most intimate and atmospheric baseball stadiums in the country. If the Cubs are not in town, you can also take a 90-minute behind-the-scenes tour of the stadium.

Tickets to see a game vary greatly but start at just $10 USD (for better seats at a popular game, expect to spend closer to $80-125 USD).  

Bring your appetite to Chinatown, where you can feast on cheap dim dum, do karaoke, or relax at one of the many tea houses. One of the oldest Chinatown’s in the country, over a third of Chicago’s Chinese population lives in Chinatown, making it one of the largest concentrations of Chinese-Americans in the USA. Don’t miss Ping Tom Memorial Park, and keep an eye out for colorful murals around the neighborhood. Some of my favorite places here are Hing Kee, MCCB Chicago, and Phoenix. &nbsp

The tradition began in 1843, when Chicago’s first Irish parade was held, but it wasn’t until 1962 that the dyeing of the river started, at the suggestion of a plumber’s union, which is still responsible for the green river each year, though it won’t divulge its secrets about what’s used (it’s environmentally friendly, though). Take a river cruise on the emerald waters or snap a pic from the sidelines and enjoy. This is one of the biggest days of the year here!  

This whimsical little park, located in the Lincoln Park area, was created to honor L. Frank Baum, the author of The Wizard of Oz . He lived in the area at the end of the 19th century, and when the city wanted to renovate the park they decided to do so in a way that honored Baum’s popular book.

There’s a playground named after Dorothy, a green space called the “Emerald Gardens,” and numerous life-size statues of popular characters from the musical adaptation, including the Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow.

Open daily 6am-11pm. Admission to the park is free.

Chicago doesn’t get the attention it deserves. I think it’s fun and perfect for a weekend getaway. And you really can’t beat the summers here either. With lots of interesting museums, plenty of green space, and some great eats, Chicago should be on every traveler’s list!

Devo in concert in Chicago: At 50, no signs of de-evolution

C HICAGO — Toward the end of its show on Saturday night, Devo, which brought its 50th anniversary De-Evolution tour to the Riviera Theatre, finally asked the question I was expecting: Does everyone in this room believe in the theory of de-evolution? The signs are all around us, they warned. It’s the kind of light dinner-party quip you might expect from guys now in their 70s.

On the other hand, pop music-wise, the members of Devo were present at the dawn of de-evolution. You might even argue they popularized de-evolution. Science-fiction novelists and conceptual artists had been delivering visions of mankind regressing long before Devo crawled out of Akron, Ohio, but Devo committed to the concept, with costumes, videos and a stone-faced satire that reflected their roots. They were a cultural manifesto and also, incidentally, a rock group.

They were founded at Kent State University in 1970, as the campus was still resonating in horror at the deaths of four classmates, shot by National Guardsmen. Neil Young’s “Ohio,” his classic lacerating protest, would be released less than a month later, but Devo (who eventually collaborated with Young) adopted a far longer-term approach to disillusionment.

So long in fact that, just a couple of years ago, Webster’s dictionary finally got around to making the word “devolve” one of its words of the year. (The term “devolution,” however, dates back to the 1920s, probably to religious-based protests against teaching evolution.)

All of this runs through your head while watching a Devo concert in 2024.

And if it doesn’t, it should: Fifty years after forming, Devo has never broken into laughter at its own satire. At least not on stage. They sing “It’s a beautiful world we live in” before montages of extreme poverty. They still play their gloriously disrespectful, herky-jerky cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction.” They remain a dystopic mirror of pop pretense. They opened with a video of an oily record executive complaining that Devo was the worst decision he’s ever made, and yet, here they are, decades later, still “preaching to the converted.“ They walked out in matching windbreakers with “Reverse Evolution” on the backs; later, for the first of several costume changes, they wore their famous yellow industrial jumpsuits, and, of course, those red “energy domes”/flowerpots (and so did many in the audience). Mark Mothersbaugh, the leader and primary music writer, grabbed his microphone and stomped robotically to the edge of the stage, as angular as the music.

The joke — in 1974, and even more so in 2024 — is that they come off paradoxically more human than far more famous acts that sell themselves as authentic.

Which is also to say, they sound wonderful, tighter than tight, and since much of what they sang about 50 years ago — consumerism as a drug, corporate overlords, conformity, advertising — became the meat and potatoes of daily social media feuds and streaming TV series, it’s a bit easier these days to just enjoy how good some of their songs really are. And also how thrilling a guitar band Devo has become. Songs like “Gates of Steel” and even their signature “Jocko Homo” — with its campy sci-fi chant, “Are we not men? (We are Devo)” — showed off power chords that chuga-chuga-chugging guitar gods like Metallica would envy.

They feel streamlined now, for the better, less performance art than a solid act, and the beauty is that this hasn’t softened or simplified anything. It’s not just that they emerged from Kent State with an absurdist, Dadaesque take on American decline, but that they became a living, subversive protest, in their image and on their records. That refusal to even pretend to be authentic was radical in 1979, and it’s radical now. But what shouts louder are their bangers. “Uncontrollable Urge,” the first song of their first album, which has Mothersbaugh mostly shouting “yeah, yeah, yeahyeahyeahyeah, yeah,” still nails the rush of punk. “Peek-A-Boo” is still a surveillance warning minus the self-importance that would doom serious acts.

The “young alien types” they once celebrated in their songs are now parental units.

But nothing else about Devo feels old.

What I loved about them in 1979 was also what unnerved me. As odd as they were compared with, say, Foreigner, or even Talking Heads, they seemed to regard the audience as even stranger. We were the real aliens. They were responding in a sane, clinical way to an insane culture. That feeling’s still there. Mothersbaugh and Co. peered at the audience. Except everyone’s in on the joke now. With 50 years behind them, they’re now planning the next 50. They flashed a huge graphic promising: 100 years of Devo, coming in 2073.

Devolution be damned.

Sky throttle Liberty 101-53 in their final preseason game

Any concerns over whether angel reese could return from the met gala ready to play were put to rest by her 13-point, five-rebound, two-steal performance..

Angel Reese finished with 13 points, five rebounds and two steals in the Sky’s win over the Liberty on Tuesday.

Tuesday marked a number of firsts for the Sky.

It was the first time Teresa Weatherspoon took the court as their coach, the first time rookie Angel Reese played in front of her new home crowd and the first time fans saw their new-look team after the WNBA failed to stream their preseason opener Friday against the Lynx.

With this first opportunity, the Sky delivered by crushing the Liberty 101-53 in a preseason game at Wintrust Arena.

Marina Mabrey made a three-pointer in transition to put the Sky ahead by 29 with 3:44 left in the third quarter, and Weatherspoon celebrated as though it was a playoff game. The moment was a glimpse of what Weatherspoon brings to the franchise.

‘‘She just tries to put everybody in positions where she knows they’ll be successful,’’ Mabrey said.

Mabrey finished with a game-high 20 points, four assists and three rebounds.

Any concerns about whether Reese would return from the Met Gala on Monday in New York ready to play were quelled by her 13-point, five-rebound, two-steal performance.

‘‘She understands how to prioritize,’’ Weatherspoon said. ‘‘She takes very good care of her body and knows what’s important.’’

Dana Evans added 19 points, seven assists and five rebounds.

The Liberty’s starters didn’t play a minute in the fourth quarter.

Vandersloot bike tour

Liberty — and former Sky — guard Courtney Vandersloot kicked her season off with a five-borough bike tour of New York.

The reason? To raise money for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. Vandersloot’s mom, Jan , was diagnosed with advanced multiple myeloma in 2022.

Vandersloot couldn’t take part in the tour last year because she was dealing with a concussion she suffered in training camp. Former Sky guard Allie Quigley , Vandersloot’s wife, rode in her place.

This year, the two completed the 40-mile bike tour together alongside MMRF members.

‘‘It was for a good cause,’’ Vandersloot said. ‘‘That kept me going. And it was one of those once-in-a-lifetime things. When are you ever going to be on the freeway with no cars in New York?’’

Vandersloot raised more than $10,000 for MMRF this year.

Injury news

Weatherspoon updated the media on rookie center Kamilla Cardoso’s injured right shoulder before the game, saying, ‘‘We’ve been told four to six weeks, but she’s a tough young lady, so it could very well be before that.’’

Weatherspoon didn’t share the specifics of Cardoso’s injury.

A priority for Weatherspoon will be ensuring that Cardoso feels fully integrated into the team despite being unable to participate in practices or games.

Along with Cardoso, rookie guard Brynna Maxwell (knee) and forward Taya Reimer (concussion protocol) are out. The team said Maxwell will be reevaluated in three to four weeks.

The Sky will have to cut their roster to 12 by Monday. In response to a question about how injuries affect the evaluation process and finalizing the roster, Weatherspoon said, ‘‘It’s a tough situation because training camp is so short.’’

The Florida Gators won the 2024 SEC softball conference tournament on May 11 at Jane B. Moore Field in Auburn, Alabama. The Gators defeated No. 5 Missouri to claim their sixth SEC tournament championship and tie Alabama for most conference tournament wins in program history.

The Gators earn an automatic bid into the 2024 NCAA tournament bracket, which will be revealed Sunday, May 12 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2. We're tracking all the automatic DI softball qualifiers and conference tournaments here.
