3 Day Clare Valley Wine & Wilderness Walk

SUGGESTED PRE-TOUR NIGHT HOTEL: We suggest the Mantra Hindmarsh Square Adelaide; this is also our meeting point at 7.30am on the first morning of the tour.

DEPARTURE TIME:  7.30am

TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 2 hour transfer from Adelaide to Clare Valley. Alternatively, drive yourself to the start of the trail. Afternoon: 10-minute transfer from the end of the walk to accommodation.

WALK GRADE: 10kms. 3 hours. Grade: Easy to Moderate.

TERRAN: The trail will travel on a network of backroads, road reserves & private property. Where possible the hiking trail follows cross country trail routes. The track has a firm base, some steps and occasional rocks (country dirt roads).

WALK ITINERARY : Meet your guides in the foyer of the Mantra Hindmarsh Square at 7:30am and transfer to the Clare Valley for the start of the trail. The town of Clare was established in the early 1840s by the first European settlers when they arrived in the district, led by John Horrocks. Edward Burton Gleeson named the town after his ancestral home of County Clare in Ireland. The walk begins at the Clare Valley Tourism centre and for a short time follows the Riesling Trail, we pass by Tim Adams wines and quickly move to a hiking trail through native gums and make our way to one of the highest points in the Clare Valley, Mt Angus on Hill River Station, with stunning views over both the Clare & Hill River Valleys, we stop for a picnic lunch on the summit (weather permitting), or retreat to a private hill top hut. After lunch we continue along the top of the Dunns range and end the walk in the vineyards of Stanley Flat. After our walk, we’ll transfer to Penobscot Farm, owned and organically grown by The Watervale Hotel for a farm tour before enjoying their delicious produce with a degustation dinner paired with local wines to compliment the dishes! The team here are very passionate about both fresh, local produce and Clare Valley wines and aims to showcase the diversity of the region. Their menu is a paddock-to-plate experience based on seasonal produce. We’ll then head to our accommodation for the next two nights at Bungaree Station, a unique, authentic and historic country retreat established in the same year as nearby town of Clare. The farm has a huge amount of history and is still run by the same family today! We will be staying in beautiful heritage-listed buildings that have been converted into accommodation, blending historic character with modern convenience.

3 Day Clare Valley Wine & Wilderness Walk

TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 10-minute transfer from our accommodation to the start of our walk. Afternoon: 15-minute transfer from the end of the walk to accommodation.

WALK GRADE: 10kms. 3 hours. Grade: Easy

TERRAIN: The trail will travel on a network of backroads, road reserves & private property. Where possible the hiking trail follows cross country trail routes. The track has a firm base, some steps and occasional rocks (country dirt roads).

WALK ITINERARY : Enjoy a hearty breakfast and grab a coffee from the Station Store before heading out for today’s adventures. Today’s walk begins in the Armagh area and finishes in the Skilly Valley with lunch at the award winning Skillogalee Restaurant. Along the way we pass through picturesque, native landscapes in the region, rocky sandstone outcrops, natural springs and steep sided valleys as we make our way to Spring Gully Conservation Park, south of Clare. The Park conserves important habitat for wildlife and unique vegetation which was once commonly found within the largely cleared and settled Clare district. We’ll continue on to Blue Gum Lookout, Eldredge Wines and Jeanneret Wines before settling in for a gourmet lunch in Skillogalee Wines restaurant in their historic stone cottage surrounded by vineyards in the wooded hills in the heart of the Sevenhill subregion, one of Australia’s oldest wine regions. The family-owned vineyards and winery have been releasing award-winning hand-crafted wines for over 50 years. In addition to being a highly-regarded regional wine producer, the historic cellar door and restaurant will definitely tempt your tastebuds featuring local and seasonal produce. Tonight enjoy dinner at a local restaurant with local Clare Valley wines. Afterwards, we return to our accommodation.

3 Day Clare Valley Wine & Wilderness Walk

TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 40-minute transfer from accommodation to the start of walk. Afternoon: 2-hour transfer from Clare Valley to Adelaide.

WALK GRADE: 8-10kms. 4 hours. Grade: Easy to Moderate.

TERRAIN: The trail will travel on a network of backroads, road reserves & private property. Where possible the hiking trail follows cross country trail routes. The undulating track has a firm base, some steps and occasional rocks (country dirt roads).

WALK ITINERARY : Enjoy breakfast before heading out for today’s walk which begins at Sevenhill Cellars, the oldest and first winery in the Clare Valley where we can see multiple historic stone buildings (which is still in use) and if you like taste some of their award winning wine. We walk through the Sevenhill Property towards the Dunns Range, passing through private farmland and making our way to the banks of the Hill River where Pikes Winery is located. From Pikes we again pass through private farmland making our way to Paulett’s award-winning Bush DeVine Restaurant for lunch with spectacular views of the countryside. Their Head Chef loves working with local ingredients, which are usually hand-picked from their Bush Devine Garden or provided by local producers. Their philosophy is ‘great wine deserves wonderful food!’ and we couldn’t agree more! A great way to finish our walking adventure. If we have time before departing to Adelaide we’ll visit the Polish Hill River Church and museum. Afterwards, we return to Adelaide where our walk concludes. If you have driven to the Clare Valley we will transfer you to your car.

FINISH TIME : Arrive back into Adelaide around 5pm.

Clare Valley Tours

Tour the clare valley region- an abundance of history, wine and food..

The beautiful and historic region of Clare Valley is almost a 2-hour drive north of Adelaide. It boasts a terrain of rolling countryside situated in the northern Mt Lofty Ranges. The region was settled in the late 1830’s with vineyards and wine production starting in the early 1840’s. With warm to hot summers and cooling afternoon breezes, this area is renowned for producing world-class Rieslings. Other well-known varieties grown in the area are Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Semillon, Grenache, Mourvedre, Tempranillo Malbec, Cabernet and Shiraz.

There is a 40km corridor between Auburn and Clare where you will find over 50 cellar doors, many of them Five-Star rated with some dating back to the first settlements. One of the very well-known is the beautiful and historic Sevenhill Cellars which is still owned and run by Jesuit Monks.

With some of South Australia’s most outstanding restaurants dotted through this region, it would be a shame not to book in and stop for lunch. Terrior Auburn, Skillogalee, Slate Restaurant, Mr Mick and Paulett’s Bush Devine are all exceptional options but don’t forget the many wonderful, genuine and welcoming country pubs, smaller cafes and bakeries.

If history is your thing, Burra has it in abundance with a ‘Heritage Tour’ that will take you back in time. Then there is Mintaro, the home of superior quality slate with the quarrying dating back as far as 1856 and still in use today. Another treasure is the National Trust-owned and managed, stunning Martindale Hall (built in 1879 – and used in the film Picnic at Hanging Rock), which is well worth a visit. For kids and the young at heart, call into the Mintaro Maze and ‘lose yourself’ for a while.

The Clare Valley is one of our favourite regions. Country hospitality blended with warmth and authenticity make this area and its people truly special. Do yourself a favour and put it on your itinerary. We can get you there and/or meet you there. We thoroughly recommend staying longer if you have the time.

Design your own day out indulging in your favourite Food and Wine options with your guide along the way, small group private touring is our speciality. We have small fridges on board to keep things cool and bottled water is supplied.

Clare Valley Tours

Clare valley, you ought to visit the.

Brian Croser AO, Andrew Mitchell, Jeffrey Grosset, Nick Ryan, and Rob Geddes MW are just a few Australian wine industry legends who have roots in the Clare Valley.

So stay for a few days, unwind, and book a tour with us to properly experience the region.

Some Recent Questions we have Answered:

Q* Is Lake Bumbunga in the Clare Valley? A* No. The 'Clare Valley' designates a wine growing region which is geographically limited by hills and valleys, creating a higher average rainfall than the surrounding areas. It is part of 'the Mid-North' of South Australia. Lake Bumbunga - "the Pink Lake", is a dry salt-lake, definitely not a winegrowing area.

The Mid North region is large and includes the Clare Valley, not the other way around.

Q* Can you take us on a day-trip to the Barossa Valley from the Clare Valley?

A* Yes. Find your Clare Valley accommodation and book 3x nights. It's like being on a cruise ship where the next day is a different place for you to explore. You won't be the first guests who have booked a Clare Tour and a Barossa Tour for the following day.

Q* Do you know the Polish Silesian and Prussian History sites?

A*  Yes, and I have managed to gain private access to museums and religious sites on short notice for Polish tourists and heritage-chasers. If you are interested in tracing your family history, visit the Clare Valley.

Together we will have some fun as we travel around some of South Australia's boutique wine country.

Let's make those memories!

You want to plan for two or three nights on your Clare Valley trip . One - to recover from your journey, Two - to spend your day with me on your Valley Wine Tour, and Three - to have a spare day for bike riding or going to the Barossa for the day on another of our tours. Where can you stay? Try these links to places we often collect passengers from; Mulberry Cottage,   Battunga Cottages ,  Neagles Retreat Villas,  The Mill Apartments , St Helen's Cottages , the  Riesling Trail and Clare Valley Cottages , the  Clare Country Club,   Sevenhill Cottages ,  O'Briens of Clare , or the  Clare Valley Motel . For Caravanners there are a few options too; families love the  Discovery Park  near Clare, while a central location is the  Clare Valley Caravan Park  in Leasingham, and there is a  Community Caravan Park in Auburn . Burra is a wonderful historical location, and the  Burra Caravan Park  (incorporating the historical Paxton Square Cottages) is very popular. We collect tour passengers from all the caravan parks. There are more accommodation options, so if you have 'forever' to search, try the local Tourism Information Website.

Looking to plan your tour lunch or a venue for dinner? We get fantastic feedback about the local eateries from our guests: Try the local Tourist Information Website on places to eat .

5 Day Clare Valley Wine & Wilderness Trail Tour Itinerary

  • Please Note: We attempt to stick to the following itinerary as close as possible, however sometimes we need the flexibility to restructure this slightly due to local conditions including weather.

1. Adelaide to the Clare Valley

The Clare Valley Wine Region lies just 1.5 hours drive North of Adelaide, located in in the northern reaches of the Mt Lofty Ranges, the Clare Valley is dotted with small boutique wineries, stunning rural  landscapes, large sections of native bush and some of the best food and wine on offer anywhere in the Country.

Our goal over the next 5 days is to sample it all by combining our love for all things Clare Valley with our love for hiking and walking.

After a quick stop in Clare for a local tea / coffee, we head straight for the start the Clare Valley Wine & Wilderness Trail. This 100km hiking trail meanders through the rural and wilderness landscapes of the Clare Valley, emerging to walk past 26 cellar door, multiple restaurants, cafes and pubs.

Todays walk is about 13km in length and forms part of stage 2 of the trail, utilising backroads, private property and the Spring Gully Conservation Park, it’s a moderate grade with a few hills thrown in to test us out (and provide some great views).

After resting with a campfire & picnic lunch at a beautiful bush setting we arrive at Jeanneret Wines where, if you like you can do a wine tasting.

We’ll then make our way to our accommodation.

All our evening meals on this tour are served in the accommodation and prepared by local restaurants and caterers, and are served with a selection of Clare Valley Wine. Tonight’s meal is supplied by the award winning Watervale Hotel, who in 2023 were voted the best Hotel Restaurant in the world!

2. Clare Valley Wine & Wilderness Trail

After a hearty breakfast and briefing from your guide, we drive a short distance to to the Visitors Centre for our 14km walk to Pauletts Winery, today completing the entire stage 6 of the CVWWT.

Only a few hundred metres from the Visitors Centre, we cross a fence and start our challenging trek along the Gillentown Range, a spectacular walk along a heavily wooded ridge with views in every direction. After an hour or so we reach the charming Village of Sevenhill, where we stop for morning tea at a local bakery.

The walk continues onto the Historic Sevenhill Cellars, the Clare Valley’s first and oldest winery, established by Jesuits escaping religious persecution in Poland 1851, the property is full of history and we’ll we have plenty of time to check out the numerous buildings, including the vaulted ceiling cellar and church crypt, and of course we cannot leave without tasting a little of their produce, those into fortifieds will enjoy Sevenhill’s expertise in this area.

From Sevenhill Cellars we head up and over the Dunns range through beautiful farmland and into the Polish Hill River Valley, a last steep but rewarding climb brings us to the doorway of Pauletts Winery Restaurant where well sit (or plonk) down for well deserved lunch with wine.

After lunch we have the option of heading back to the accommodation for a rest before dinner or drop into Hill River Clare Estate, a small cellar door in the Polish Hill River Valley for a wine tasting.

Tonight we are treated with a private wine tasting from a local wine maker before dinner.

  • Transport the walk
  • Pauletts Lunch with wine
  • Walk Stage 6 of the CVWWT
  • Wine Tasting at Hill River Clare Estate
  • Wine Tasting / Education in the lodge with a local winemaker
  • Evening meal in the lodge with local wine
  • Walk Distance: 14km

3. Clare Valley Wine & Wilderness Trail

We start the day with another healthy breakfast at the lodge and a briefing from your guide.

Today we are walking on stage 3 of the CVWWT from the village of Leasingham to the award winning Skillogalee Restaurant, located in a beautiful and historic stone cottage at the head of the Skilly Valley, a distance of 12km.

From the get go, we get the blood pumping and climb up to the ridge separating the Clare Valley from the Skilly Vally, known locally as the Skilly Hills, taking special note of the Shiraz vineyard on the left with the lone Pepper Tree growing at it’s centre.

From our ridge vantage point we are rewarded with stunning views, the walk roughly follows the ridge but also diverts into some beautiful valleys full of gnarly old River Gums and the classic Clare Valley Native bush that you will now be getting familiar with.

Eventually we hit a back road which takes us along the valley floor past numerous vineyards, sheep paddocks and very English looking historic stone homes.

We’ll stop for morning tea and tasting at Mitchell Wines, it would be wrong not to at least try their signature wine, the Pepper Tree Shiraz, sourced from the vineyard at the start of our walk.

It’s now only a short 15 minute walk to Skillogalee, where again our walk concludes as we go through their front door and settle in for a long lunch under their famous olive tree, or inside by the open fire if it a cold wintery day.

  • Skillogalee Restaurant Lunch
  • Walk Stage 3 of the CVWWT
  • Wine tasting with lunch
  • Transfers to Adelaide
  • Walk Distance: 12km

4. Clare Valley Wine & Wilderness Trail

Today we tackle stage 1 of the CVWWT, we have a 10km trek starting on the exposed lofty heights of the Dunns Range and finishing on the floor of the Valley amoung giant gums on the banks of the Hutt River.

Our first stop after about 3km is the CVWWT hikers hut perched on top of the range, this privately owned hut provides shelter from winter winds and summer sun and can be used by trail walkers as a rest stop. We’ll stop her for our morning tea break.

We then push southward and remain on the exposed ridge for another few km, this is one of the highest elevations we’ll reach over the 5 days at around 560 metres above sea level, the views are also some of the best we’ll get, with the Dunns range separating the Clare Valley from the Polish Hill River Valley we gain a great perspective of the whole region and can see most of the areas where we have spent the past 3 day walking.

Once off the ridge we get into the bush and eventually emerge at Tim Adams Wines where we can stop fora tasting, a short distance further on we reach the end of the walk, from here we jump in the bus for a short 5 minute drive to Pikes Winery.

Set on the banks of the Hill River, the Modern Pikes Slate Winery / Restaurant is one of Clare’s best and will not disappoint.

Wine is served with lunch, and we can move into Cellar Door after lunch for more tasting delights or head back to the Lodge.

  • Pikes Lunch with wine
  • Walk Stage 1 of the CVWWT
  • Wine Tasting at Pikes

5. Clare Valley Wine & Wilderness Trail

For our final day in the Clare Valley we have a great 9.5km walk from Taylors Wins in Auburn to the Watervale Hotel in Watervale.

As is the theme for most of out lunches, our walk ends when we enter the pub.

The Watervale Hotel is a real treat, voted the best Hotel Restaurant in the world in 2023, owners Warrick and Nicola have a level 11 passion (on a scale of 1 – 10) for locally sourced produce, what they don’t grow on their own biodynamic farm they buy in for only the best and most responsible suppliers.

With a variable menu based around the growing seasons, their dedication to all things food has paid off and you will not be disappointed with what they have to offer.

Our walk roughly runs from South to North, and criss crosses the Watervale grape growing region, which is a highly regaurded region, with most local wineries either owning vineyards in this area or sourcing fruit for their quality and premium wines, look for the distinctive red loamy soil under foot, which has been laid over chunky limestone into which the old vines have carefully placed their roots to pull all sorts of flavours.

Along the way we’ll stop off at Koerner Wines for morning tea and tasting.

From Watervale we return the Adelaide, dropping you off at your accommodation at around 5pm

  • Morning tea / Tasting at Koerner Wines
  • Walk Stages 5 of the CVWWT
  • Lunch at the Watervale Hotel with wine
