TSA PreCheck and Clear can both get you through airport security faster. But which is better?

You may not have to choose anymore, as Clear and PreCheck can now be purchased as a bundle at some airports .

Regardless, here’s a look at the benefits, requirements and price of TSA PreCheck versus Clear to help you decide which will work best for you — and whether you should get both. Plus, learn all the ways you can get one (or both) for free .

Under a new partnership between the TSA and Clear, you can apply for TSA PreCheck at one of almost 50 participating Clear enrollment locations without an appointment. Submit your application online first , then finish the process at a Clear kiosk at a participating airport. Clear will submit your TSA PreCheck application on your behalf; expect to hear back in three to five days.

Here are three main differences between Clear and TSA PreCheck:

Bypassing security vs. shortening the wait. TSA PreCheck allows you to go through a shorter security line and undergo less strict screening requirements (i.e. don’t need to take off shoes). Clear allows you to skip the security line completely because instead of waiting in line, you approach a Clear kiosk where your ID and boarding pass are verified through biometric technology. Once that quick process is complete, a Clear agent escorts you right to the front of security. No waiting required.

Cost. TSA PreCheck costs $77.95 (when applying through Clear ), $78 (when applying through Idemia) or $85 (when applying through Telos) for five years while Clear costs $199 per year. Apply for both TSA PreCheck and Clear as a bundle (only available at certain airports) and the whole package will cost $199, with Clear membership only lasting one year, but PreCheck lasting for the full five.

Organization type. Clear is owned by a private company while TSA PreCheck is a government program.

One program doesn’t replace the other. They are complementary to one another.

TSA PreCheck and Clear aren’t available at every airport, so many frequent travelers find it best to have memberships to both. This improves the odds of faster and smoother airport experiences.

Luckily, there are many credit cards that completely cover the cost of both programs , allowing you to pay nothing out-of-pocket for both benefits.

TSA PreCheck, managed by the Transportation Security Administration, is available to low-risk travelers who undergo an advance screening process. Open to U.S. citizens and certain foreign citizens, this includes a background check to determine eligibility for passing through airport security without having follow certain protocols.

Examples include removing your shoes and belt, taking out liquids or electronics (like laptop computers), and taking off outer garments, like a light jacket.

How does TSA PreCheck work?

Once you’re approved for TSA PreCheck, you’re issued a Known Traveler Number, which you provide to your airline by storing it in your frequent flyer account or entering it into your reservation . Your boarding passes will henceforth include a TSA PreCheck designation that authorizes you to use an expedited security screening lane in more than 200 domestic airports. More than 85 domestic and international airlines participate in the program.

TSA PreCheck members pass through a traditional metal detector rather than a full body scanner (which some people find invasive). And you’ll usually get through security much faster: According to the TSA, about 99% of PreCheck-eligible passengers waited ten minutes or less.

TSA doesn't guarantee expedited screening with PreCheck. Occasionally, you may have to go through a random secondary check of your bags by security personnel.

If the TSA PreCheck designation doesn't appear on your boarding pass, you can ask an airline agent to reenter your information. This usually fixes the problem, and an agent can reprint your boarding pass. Get more advice on adding PreCheck to your airline ticket .

How to apply for TSA PreCheck

U.S. citizens and foreign citizens who meet particular residency requirements are eligible to apply online and pay the $78 fee when paid for through provider Idemia (good for five years and easy to renew online for $70 per renewal after five years). If you apply through provider Telos, the initial application fee is $85. After applying online and receiving conditional approval, your final application step is to visit an enrollment center for a brief interview.

If you'd like to skip the enrollment center, you can apply for TSA PreCheck online through Clear (whether on its own or as a package with Clear) and complete your application at a Clear kiosk in an airport currently supporting this service.

Families with children under 12 can also apply, but if you travel with them, they can also access the TSA PreCheck line with you without paying to be a member. Children 13-17 years old can also accompany TSA PreCheck member parents/guardians but must have the TSA PreCheck indicator on their boarding pass to do so.

Using biometric data to identify travelers (rather than manually checking photo identification), Clear machines allow flyers to bypass long security queues and get to a TSA screening point faster.

Clear does not include the membership features of TSA PreCheck, however.

After passing through a Clear kiosk, if you have PreCheck, you can go directly to the PreCheck lane (ahead of other passengers waiting in line); if not, you must use the regular screening line (also ahead of other passengers waiting in line).

The real benefit of Clear is saving time.

This means that if you value not having to remove shoes, electronics, liquids and outerwear, you will also want to apply for TSA PreCheck. If you only want to bypass the line, but don't mind removing items and passing through a body scanner, then Clear may be worth it on its own.

Unlike TSA PreCheck, Clear is only available at a few dozen domestic airports. Members use a faster line to scan their fingerprint or iris before moving directly to the security lane. Clear is also available at other venues that require lining up for a security check, like stadiums.

As an added perk, Clear membership will also get you complimentary Avis Preferred Plus status with Avis's loyalty program . Avis Preferred Plus status includes perks like:

A free, single-car class upgrade upon availability.

The ability to earn additional bonus points on each rental.

Access to exclusive offers and promotional discounts.

You would typically need to spend $4,000 on qualifying Avis purchases or complete 10 rentals in a calendar year to qualify for Avis Preferred Plus.

How to apply for Clear

You can apply for Clear online or at an airport Clear kiosk by showing valid government-issued identification. Unlike TSA PreCheck, there is no background check needed to apply for Clear, although you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident 18 or older.

Clear costs $199 for an annual membership (auto-renewals are possible and do not require any additional verification), and members can add up to three family members for an additional $60 per person. Children under 18 can use a Clear lane for free if they are traveling with a Clear member.

If you apply for Clear as a bundle with PreCheck (total cost of $199.95), you can effectively get your first year of clear for only $122.

If you are a United Premier 1K or Delta Diamond Medallion member, you get an annual membership free of charge. Other Delta and United elite members get a discount.

If your credit card offers reimbursement for the application fee for programs like TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, you must pay the fee with the card. You cannot submit a claim for reimbursement if you paid with some other method. Reimbursement will usually appear as a statement credit in your account within two months.

Cards typically offer reimbursement of only one fee once every four to five years. Check the terms and conditions of your card for the specific rules that apply. Note also that these cards only reimburse the application fee for a trusted traveler program. They don't automatically enroll you in the program or guarantee that you'll be accepted by the program. If you have been approved for Global Entry, you do not need to apply separately for TSA PreCheck. It comes automatically with Global Entry, so do not double pay.

If you travel internationally often, applying for Global Entry would make more sense, but if you are a mostly domestic traveler, you should stick to TSA PreCheck as the application process is simpler.

Several cards will reimburse you if you pay for Clear membership with the card. This includes The Platinum Card® from American Express , the American Express® Green Card , the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express . Each offers a statement credit up to $199 per year for purchasing Clear access.

Since TSA PreCheck is available at more airports and provides expedited security wait times, as well as an easier screening process, TSA PreCheck is better than Clear if you want to only get one. Those with Clear membership only have access to faster security lanes. Without TSA PreCheck, Clear members must still remove their shoes, electronics, liquids and outerwear.

But the choice of TSA PreCheck versus Clear doesn't have to be an either-or proposition. Many TSA PreCheck members value having Clear, as it further expedites moving ahead of the occasionally long TSA PreCheck lane in dozens of airports.

Still, TSA PreCheck remains the best way to make your way airside without wasting time in lines.

The only real upside to having Clear alone, without TSA PreCheck, is if you plan to use it exclusively at stadiums, where it will get you to the front of the line faster.

Not all U.S. citizens will be approved for TSA PreCheck for various reasons, including problems with a background check. If that’s you, Clear alone can be worthwhile if you fly regularly from an airport that has Clear lanes.

What is TSA PreCheck?

TSA PreCheck is a Trusted Traveler Program administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Transportation Security Administration (TSA). TSA PreCheck is available at over 200 domestic airports and more than 90 airlines, all of which can be found on the official TSA website . Even though many airports and airlines participate in TSA PreCheck, there are some locations where TSA PreCheck is not available.

TSA PreCheck benefits

As a TSA PreCheck member, you’ll be able to access the expedited TSA PreCheck security line and complete airport security without going through the hassle of removing your shoes, belt or light jacket. You’ll also be able to leave laptops and TSA-approved liquids and gels in your carry-on. As for speed, the TSA claims that about 99% of TSA PreCheck passengers enjoy wait times of less than 10 minutes.

Many people consider the designated TSA PreCheck security line and faster clearance through security to be the primary benefit of TSA PreCheck — but being able to keep your shoes on and keep laptops and approved liquids in your carry-on during the process is also a huge plus. Keep in mind that passengers are selected occasionally for additional airport security screenings, which could interrupt the expedited process.

TSA PreCheck application process and cost

If you are a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or a lawful and permanent U.S. resident, you are eligible to apply for TSA PreCheck — and the application process is simple. First, fill out a short online application on the TSA PreCheck website; it should take no more than five minutes to complete.

Then, schedule an appointment at a TSA PreCheck enrollment center to receive a background check and fingerprinting. After completing the TSA PreCheck application process and passing a background check, you’ll receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) that you can enter whenever you book a flight.

This two-step application process costs up to $85, depending on which enrollment provider you use ($78 for enrollments through IDEMIA and $85 for enrollments through Telos). Online renewals only cost $70, and your TSA PreCheck enrollment status will remain valid for five years. However, many travel-focused credit cards and loyalty programs offer statement credits for TSA PreCheck application costs, which is one way to offset the cost of applying for TSA PreCheck.

Plus, top travel credit cards often come with other cost-saving benefits, like travel insurance and airport lounge access. So if you’re a frequent traveler, you might want to consider adding a travel card to your wallet.

What is Clear?

Clear is a membership program that allows its members to quickly verify their identities at biometric security kiosks. The paid membership Clear Plus is required for use at airports, while membership is free for those who only use it to enter partner stadiums and arenas. Clear meets the TSA baseline for security and privacy controls and has been certified as a “qualified anti-terrorism technology” by the Department of Homeland Security.

You can find Clear kiosks at more than 55 airports and at stadiums and arenas across the U.S. In New York, for example, Clear is available at Barclays Center, John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Madison Square Garden, Westchester County Airport and Yankee Stadium. Smaller cities and towns, on the other hand, may not have Clear locations. Clear benefits

Clear Plus passengers can use the Clear lane to speed up the first half of the airport security process instead of waiting in line for a TSA representative to check their boarding pass and photo ID. After getting through the biometric screening, a Clear Ambassador escorts you directly to the next stage of the screening process so that you can complete physical and luggage scanning. You’re then taken to the TSA PreCheck line, if you already have TSA PreCheck. Otherwise, you use the regular screening line.

The $189 annual fee for the Clear Plus individual membership allows you to pass through expedited airport security. Clear also offers a free sports and events pass through its app that helps shorten the time it takes to enter sports and entertainment venues.

Clear application process and cost

You’re eligible to apply for Clear if you are at least 18 years old and have a U.S. driver’s license, U.S. passport or U.S. state-issued ID. The Clear application process is similar to the TSA PreCheck application process. You’ll start by filling out an online application. Then, visit one of the more than 50 Clear airport locations to finish the process. You don’t need an appointment before visiting a Clear location, but you do need to bring a photo ID that matches the name on your application and prepare to share your biometric information.

A Clear Plus membership is more expensive than TSA Precheck, with individual membership costing $189 per year and family memberships costing $189 a year plus $99 per person for up to three adults (children under 18 can use the Clear lane for free when traveling with a Clear Plus member). And while a statement credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry applications is a common perk among luxury travel cards, Clear credits are much less common. However, members of Delta SkyMiles and United MileagePlus are eligible for discounted or free Clear memberships.

In addition, several American Express cards offer Clear benefits. For example, the American Express® Green Card offers up to a $189 Clear statement credit each year to help you cover part of the membership cost. There’s also The Platinum Card® from American Express , which offers up to $189 in Clear statement credits each year.

Which is better: TSA PreCheck or Clear?

When it comes down to choosing between Clear or TSA PreCheck, many travelers assume TSA PreCheck is better. TSA PreCheck is less expensive, is available at more airports nationwide and has the advantage of being backed by the federal government. Plus, many travel credit cards offer a statement credit that covers the cost of a TSA PreCheck application.

That said, Clear also has a few advantages over TSA PreCheck. As TSA PreCheck becomes more popular, having a Clear Plus membership can help expedite the ID check screening at airports to make it go even faster. If you don’t already have TSA PreCheck, this can be a huge benefit. And if you frequent partner sports arenas and concert venues, the ability to quickly pass through security may make Clear worth it for you — especially if you carry a credit card that offers a statement credit toward your Clear Plus membership.

Should you get both TSA PreCheck and Clear?

While it might sound odd to consider enrolling in both TSA PreCheck and Clear, there are advantages to being a member of both programs. The biggest advantage is the way the programs work together to ease your trip through airport security. You can streamline your travel document screening process through Clear, then enter the TSA PreCheck screening line and walk through security with your shoes on.

Here are a few more advantages to having both TSA PreCheck and Clear:

• TSA PreCheck only allows you to expedite your airport security experience, but Clear can speed up your entry into airports, stadiums and other entertainment venues.
• When available, Clear passengers always have access to the dedicated Clear lane at security.
• Not all airlines allow you to use your TSA PreCheck membership to get through security, but Clear works no matter what airline you’re flying.
• Clear’s Health Pass allows you to share medical or vaccination information, which may be required for travel or entry into venues.

Also, it’s worth noting that TSA PreCheck isn’t the only recommended TTP. If you’re a Delta SkyMiles member, you can save on your annual CLEAR membership:

If you’re an Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan MVP, MVP Gold, MVP Gold 75k, and MVP Gold 100k member, you’ll qualify for a discounted price of $189 . Elite members also receive 1,500 miles when enrolling in CLEAR for the first time and 1,250 miles each year upon renewal. General Mileage Plan members receive a $10 annual discount on membership, costing them $189.

Hawaiian Airlines HawaiianMiles

Pualani Platinum, Pualani Gold, and Premier Club members can purchase a membership at $159, and HawaiianMiles members can get a discounted price of $189.

Pualani Platinum members who have 75,000 flight miles or more can enroll in a complimentary annual CLEAR Plus membership.

If you’re a student, you’re eligible for  special student pricing of $60 a year for 4 years.

CLEAR partners with a third-party service to confirm eligibility, but if you’re a student, this is one of the cheapest ways to get CLEAR.

If you’re joining as a family, you can add adult family members at $119 a person per year. 

According to CLEAR, “family” doesn’t necessarily need to be your biological family: “whether it is your biological family, chosen family, or friends that feel like family. It’s totally up to you!” Children under 18 do not need to enroll and can join any CLEAR member in line for free.

Following a 1-time enrollment, CLEAR will connect your biometrics (e.g., face, iris) to your personal identity, making it possible for you to speed through airport and sports venue security using only the blink of your eye.

The CLEAR platform aims to create a smoother experience for its members, from biometric airport boarding passes to biometric airport lounge access and easy access to sports venues and concessions. When you become a CLEAR member, your standard ID, ticket, and boarding pass are simply replaced by your eyes.

This means you’ll no longer need to remove your wallet from your purse or pocket. Members enroll or verify at any CLEAR pod at the participating location, and then a CLEAR Ambassador escorts you through the dedicated CLEAR lanes.

Any U.S. citizen and legal permanent resident who has reached the age of 18 is eligible for enrollment in CLEAR.

The program is not open to international residents, though they likely wouldn’t receive many benefits unless they travel extensively within the U.S.

The only restriction is that the full name on your application must match the name on your photo ID.

Unlike Global Entry and other expedited programs, CLEAR members have no background check . This is because you are not receiving any expedited or reduced screening by being a CLEAR member.

The program matches your eye and identity with your boarding pass, so you don’t have to present your ID to a TSA officer. From there, you’re still assigned access to the regular security lanes or TSA PreCheck (if you have that program).

CLEAR offers accelerated touchless screening for members going through airport identification security lines before any physical screening. Currently, CLEAR is working on an airport expansion to create a smooth experience from curb to gate for all members.

Eventually, this would include baggage check and claim, boarding, airport lounge access, and security checkpoints . Once you become an enrolled CLEAR member, you can utilize this service anywhere that CLEAR is found. The other CLEAR program benefits include:

• Fast and easy enrollment that only requires a few minutes
• Accelerated screening in security ID lines at participating airports
• Availability at an ever-expanding list of airports and sports venues all over the country

CLEAR also offers its members several exclusive discounts or opportunities within its partner network, such as hotel discounts, airline tickets, or other travel-related services.

CLEAR does not bypass you from participating in security processes, including passing your bags through X-rays or walking through a metal detector. As a CLEAR member, your eyes will speed you through the participating airport and stadium identification lines faster.

With CLEAR, you can breeze through the identification inspection process at more than 70 airports and sports venues nationwide. CLEAR members can speed through the entire security process from start to finish in less than 5 minutes on average since CLEAR lanes allow members to proceed to the very front of the security queues.

Take, for example, an airport like Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), where many travelers have TSA PreCheck due to being government workers. TSA PreCheck and regular security lines can be long, especially during peak travel periods like Monday morning or Friday afternoon.

With CLEAR, once your ID matches your boarding pass, you will proceed to the front of the security lines. So, no matter how long the TSA PreCheck or standard security lines are, once you’re done with the CLEAR process, you head straight to the front, right where you put your bags into the scanner.

This process of having your eye scanned and matched to your boarding pass rarely (if ever) takes longer than about 2 minutes, at which point you’ll proceed through the metal detector like normal to complete the rest of your screening process.

CLEAR has also partnered with Uber for a Home to Gate program via the CLEAR app, where users can track security wait times and call an Uber in time to take them to the airport and get through security in perfect timing for their flight.

CLEAR is a great way to speed to the front of any long security queues. Processing only takes a few moments.

Another way to save even more time is by using Reserve by CLEAR . This program, available at select airports, allows you to enter your flight information to reserve a time to go through security. When you arrive at the airport, you can scan your QR code (in an email after you reserve your spot) in the specially marked Reserve Lane to proceed through the standard security line without waiting.

They’ll try to solicit your business by encouraging you to enroll, so be vigilant about the offer they may present and always ensure you’re getting the cheapest CLEAR membership possible.

Here are the easy steps to use CLEAR:

• Get in the CLEAR lane. Usually, these are right next to the regular security lines.
• You’ll check in  at a pod using an iris scan as verification. An ambassador will open the pod and escort you to the checkpoint.
• Once you’re finished verifying your identity, you can put your ID away . You won’t need to show this to the TSA officer.
• You’ll proceed through the TSA checkpoint as normal . If you have TSA PreCheck, you can use those lanes; otherwise, you’ll use the regular lanes.

How CLEAR Works With TSA PreCheck

If you have TSA PreCheck, CLEAR staff will see the TSA PreCheck eligibility on your boarding pass and escort you to TSA PreCheck expedited lanes for screening.

By visiting the CLEAR website before your upcoming flight, you can find out which CLEAR lanes are next to a TSA PreCheck.

For the best possible travel experience, use a premium credit card to get Global Entry membership for free , which also comes with TSA PreCheck. Then, enroll in CLEAR separately.

Once you are a CLEAR member, just log into your account to access your Family Plan. Here, you can add up to 3 adult family members at $119 each per year.

Children under 18 who are accompanied by a CLEAR member have access to the CLEAR lane free of charge, so you don’t need to add them to your account. Kids this age don’t need identification when traveling through the TSA checkpoint, which is why CLEAR allows them to proceed.

At stadiums, you can take 1 person with you in CLEAR security lanes, so you don’t need a second membership for a companion in those scenarios.

Currently, CLEAR is only available to citizens and legal permanent residents of the U.S.

Currently, members can utilize CLEAR at 70+ stadiums and airports that cover much of the country’s domestic departure traffic. Opening times and specific location information for each checkpoint are available on the CLEAR website .

Enroll in TSA PreCheck With CLEAR

Applicants can sign up for TSA PreCheck through CLEAR by pre-enrolling online or enrolling in person at one of the locations with an asterisk in the table above.

CLEAR typically costs $199 per year, and TSA PreCheck starts at $78 for a 5-year membership . However, if you enroll in TSA PreCheck through CLEAR, you can take advantage of both programs for a discounted bundle rate of $199 . Travelers who pre-enroll must complete the process within 14 days to secure the discounted price.

All full membership CLEAR users are eligible to access CLEAR at sports venues. If you don’t have a normal CLEAR membership, you can enroll in a special CLEAR Sports version , which is free but only valid at sports stadiums and not at airports.

Starting your free online Sports enrollment is easy and can be finished in just a few minutes at any CLEAR location. You can also upgrade your membership to enjoy CLEAR airport access by selecting “Sports + Airports” when enrolling (this requires a fee).

Using the CLEAR mobile app , you can track security wait times, order an Uber via Home to Gate, apply for a new membership, enter stadiums and concert venues, or store health information as part of a health pass system.

Using CLEAR Health Pass , you can upload vaccination information, medical history, and other pertinent data to share with others. CLEAR can verify this information, which can be used for businesses or other entities to trust that the medical information being shared is truthful.

How You Apply

Applying for CLEAR only takes a few minutes; no appointment is necessary. You can begin the application online to save more time. Once enrolled, you can begin using CLEAR that same day.

You do not need an appointment to enroll in CLEAR. Unlike Global Entry or other expedited traveler programs, CLEAR enrollment can be done at the airport.

What You Need

CLEAR is open to individuals 18 and older. For enrolling, you’ll need one of the following photo identification forms. All identification must be valid, unexpired, unamended, and contain a photo:

• U.S. driver’s license
• U.S. passport
• U.S. passport card
• U.S.-issued permanent resident card
• State-issued ID
• U.S. military ID

Re-registering for CLEAR

If you were a former member of the old CLEAR program, CLEAR will honor whatever time remains on that account. This will be credited to you when you reactivate your account by logging in to your account .

Don’t remember your original password? Just follow the instructions for establishing a new one. The CLEAR program no longer uses CLEAR cards (if you were issued one). Once you reactivate your account, you can use the CLEAR lanes immediately.

Renewing Your CLEAR Membership

To renew an existing CLEAR membership, log in to your account . After selecting Reactivate, you’ll be set — you don’t have to update your biometrics because CLEAR will still have them on file. You will just need to pay the annual membership fee.

The bottom line is that everything is faster with biometrics, and CLEAR can make your travel life faster and easier.

CLEAR is perfect for solo business travelers and families since members can take their children under 18 with them. A Clear Plus membership gets you through security faster by using your biometric information to verify your identity. Clear is available at more than 58 airports nationwide and several major sports stadiums. An individual membership costs $189 per year, but there are several ways to get it for free or at a reduced cost. Here’s everything you need to know about the program, including how to get Clear Plus for free. 

Clear uses biometrics, like your eyes or fingerprints, to identify you before you go through airport security, and this means you can skip the document verification process while going through TSA. Many people use Clear in conjunction with TSA PreCheck , which expedites and simplifies security scanning. If you have both, you can go to the front of the line for identity verification using biometric data, then breeze through security without removing your shoes, laptop, or liquids.

A Clear Plus individual membership costs $189 annually, substantially more than the $78 TSA PreCheck five-year membership fee. A family membership runs $189 per year for the primary account holder, plus $99 per person for up to three adults on your account. You can travel together or separately, and the family membership isn’t limited to family. Friends can be included in this membership, making it more cost-effective for everyone.

To qualify, you must be 18 or older and have a valid form of government I.D., which can include any of the following:

• U.S. driver's license
• U.S. passport
• State-issued ID

You can enroll in Clear online or in person at the airport. If you enroll online, you will complete your enrollment at the airport, where a Clear ambassador will take your biometric data.

The Clear Plus annual fee is much higher than TSA PreCheck or Global Entry , so fewer credit cards offer statement credits to cover the full cost of a membership. However, there are still a few options to consider. Each of these cards provides a statement credit of up to $189 per calendar year when you use your card to pay the annual fee of a Clear Plus membership.

Premium Credit Cards:

• Amex Green Card: $150 annual fee
• Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card: $550 annual fee
• The Platinum Card by American Express: $695 annual fee

Business Credit Cards: 

• The Business Platinum Card by American Express: $695 annual fee

Luckily, there are several ways outside of credit cards to get Clear at a discounted rate.

Family members under 18 can join you in the Clear lane without an account. Select groups, like military service members and government employees, are eligible for a membership at a discounted rate. Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have partnered with Clear to offer free or discounted rates for select frequent fliers. Diamond Medallion and Delta 360 members receive a free annual Clear Plus membership, as do Premier 1K members at United.

If you have silver, gold, or platinum medallion status at Delta, you receive $40 off an annual membership, paying just $149 per year. This is the same for United — anyone with Premier silver, gold, or platinum can enroll for $149 per year. Eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express and United credit card holders receive the same rate of $149 annually.

Finally, SkyMiles and MileagePlus members receive a $10 annual discount and a 14-day trial. So, you can access a special rate of $179 per year simply by enrolling in the frequent flier program for free.

Before packing.

• Start with an EMPTY bag (make sure all pockets and compartments don’t have any items in them)
• 3.4 ounces or less per container
• 1 quart size, clear, plastic, zip top bag (all liquids must fit in bag)
• 1 bag per passenger
•   Review the prohibited items list for both carry-on and checked baggage.
• If purchasing a baggage lock, be sure to look for those that are TSA recognized.
• Tape a card with your name and contact information on your electronics.

When Packing

• Pack items in layers (shoes one layer, clothes one layer, electronics one layer, etc.)
• Firearms are only allowed in checked baggage and must be unloaded, placed in a locked, hard-sided container and declared to your airline.
• All fireworks contain explosive materials and are not permitted in checked or carry-on baggage.
• Do not pack items such as box cutters, utility knives, and razors in carry-on luggage. Razor blades intended for shaving that are enclosed in a safety cartridge in which the blade cannot be removed are permitted.
• Pack large electronics on top layer of carry-on for screening accessibility.
• Place your 3-1-1 bag with liquids, gels and aerosols in the front pocket of your carry-on for accessibility.
• If traveling with a pet, be sure to bring a leash so carriers can be properly screened.

Before Leaving for the Airport

• Give yourself enough time to arrive at the airport early.
• Wear easily removable shoes.
• Passengers with a disability or medical condition may call ahead to the TSA Cares toll free helpline at (855) 787-2227 .

Before Entering the Checkpoint

• Eligible passengers look for the TSA PreCheck® lane for expedited screening at participating airports.
• Have your  ID and boarding pass out for inspection.

In Standard Screening Lane

• Remove the 3-1-1 liquids bag and place it in the bin.
• Ensure pockets are empty (keys, tissues, currency, wallets, cell phones, etc.) and remove bulky jewelry (valuable items can be placed in carry-on).
• Remove your shoes and place them directly on the X-ray belt.
• Remove personal electronic devices larger than a cell phone from your carry-on bag and place them into a bin with nothing placed on or under them for X-ray screening. (E.g. laptops, tablets, e-readers and handheld game consoles.)
• Remember to check the bins and collect all belongings after going through screening.

Why your family may want to get Clear before your next flight

As you may have noticed at the airport, TSA PreCheck isn't always the only way to skip the traditional security line. Another service that will expedite your airport security experience in 54 airports and counting is Clear .

After deeming it unnecessary or duplicative to PreCheck for a period of time, my family first used Clear to get through security quickly in 2018; on this particular day, all the other lines were so long we may have missed our flight if we waited.

Now, it feels more important than ever to have Clear so we can all get through security as quickly and painlessly as possible. This is especially true as PreCheck is becoming crowded or may not always be available.

Since I've used Clear for a few years at this point, I know it doesn't replace PreCheck — it can actually be used in conjunction with PreCheck. Clear is a paid service, so it may not make sense for people who fly only once a year or so. However, there are ways to make it more affordable, and since children under 18 can tag along with a parent with a membership, it can be a relatively family-friendly service.

How Clear works

Instead of using traditional documents checked by the U.S. Transporation and Security Administration screeners, Clear uses biometrics — such as your eyes and face — verified by machines. You don't need to touch anything or have anyone handle your ID when using Clear. However, Clear users, like all registered travelers, remain subject to random ID checks by TSA .

Even before the pandemic, avoiding the prospect of digging your ID out of your bag is pretty fantastic.

When you bring your kids with you while using Clear, they don't have their biometrics scanned or checked. They'll instead get their boarding passes checked.

While kids can only piggyback with you in PreCheck until they turn 13, they can accompany you for free through Clear until age 18.

I have seen a bit of a line for Clear before in places like Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). However, I'm usually through Clear and escorted past the TSA lane by a cheery Clear staff member in under two minutes.

Not only do you get to keep your ID in place when using Clear, but you can also still take advantage of all the normal PreCheck offerings; you can keep your shoes on and your tablet or laptop packed away. If you don't have PreCheck — or you just don't get it on that particular flight — you can still use your Clear membership.

For example, when my family was leaving Orlando International Airport (MCO), we randomly didn't get PreCheck. We would have had to wait 30 minutes in the security line, but we were able to zip right through the process thanks to Clear.

How much does Clear cost?

Clear isn't free, which is its biggest downside for some, but it is also why the lines to use it are generally shorter. The longest lines I've seen for Clear are in places where the largest number of travelers who get it for free reside. For example, at ATL there are many Delta Diamonds who can get Clear without charge.

The retail price for Clear is $199 per year per person, but you don't need to pay that much.

To start, Clear has partnered with Delta Air Lines , United Airlines and Alaska Airlines to offer special membership rates for their frequent flyers:

Delta SkyMiles discounts

• Delta Diamond Medallion members: complimentary membership
• Delta Platinum, Gold and Silver Medallion members: $149 per year
• Those with a Delta cobranded credit card, including the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card , Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card , Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card , Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card , Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card : $149 annually
• General SkyMiles members: $179 annually

United MileagePlus discounts

• United Global Services and Premier 1K members: complimentary membership
• United Platinum, Gold and Silver members: $149 annually
• Those with a United cobranded credit card, such as the United Explorer Card , United Business Card and the United Club Infinite Card : $149 annually
• General United MileagePlus members: $179 annually

To take advantage of these rates, enter your SkyMiles or MileagePlus number during enrollment or link your SkyMiles or MileagePlus account after enrolling. Since it's free to join Delta SkyMiles and United MileagePlus, any U.S.-based passenger can access the discounted membership rates by linking their SkyMiles or MileagePlus account to their Clear account.

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan discounts

• MVP, MVP Gold, MVP Gold 75K and MVP Gold 100K members will receive 1,500 bonus miles when they sign up for Clear, plus an additional 1,250 miles each year they renew
• General Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members: $179 annually

Credit cards that cover Clear fees

The following credit cards will reimburse you for up to $199 per year in Clear Plus membership costs:

• American Express Green Card
• The Platinum Card® from American Express
• The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
• The Centurion Card from American Express
• Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card

Once you are a Clear member, you can log in to your account on Clear's website and add up to three family members for $99 each per year. Remember that children under 18 can use the lane for free when accompanied by a Clear member and aren't eligible to enroll in Clear themselves.

Bottom line

I joined Clear years ago on a day when the regular security lines were beyond insane.

Luckily, I could pop over to the Clear machine, register with a Clear employee and start using it on the spot. At the time, I had no idea how much I would appreciate having Clear.

As we head into the holiday season, it's a service I'm frequently immensely grateful for — especially with my kids along for the ride at no extra charge.
