Glasgow International Comedy Festival unveils full programme with Frank Skinner, Maisie Adam and more heading to Glasgow this spring

Article Source: Glasgow International Comedy Festival Last Updated: 10 January 2024 12:30

Glasgow International Comedy Festival (GICF) has today revealed its full 2024 programme with over 500 events in 45 venues as the festival celebrates Glasgow as the funniest city in the world for 19 days of comedy, for one of its biggest years yet. Taking place from 13th - 31st March 2024, GICF will welcome international comedians, rising Scottish talent and the very best of live comedy with the programme’s latest announcements including Frank Skinner, Caroline Rhea, Maisie Adam, Leslie Liao, Fesshole, All Killa No Filla, Kieran Hodgson, and more. They join a line-up which includes hometown heroes Susie McCabe, Frankie Boyle, Elaine C Smith, Mark Nelson, Some Laugh Live and Old Firm Facts Live, as well as UK stars Ed Gamble, Fiona Allen, Fascinating Aïda, Stewart Lee, Luisa Omielan, Sikisia, Sam Campbell and many more. 2024 will mark GICF’s 21st birthday with the festival bringing world class comedy to Glasgow through traditional stand-up, live podcasts, musicals, character comedy, storytelling, clowning, improv, theatre and even comedy wrestling. All Killa No Filla (Kiri Pritchard-McLean and Rachel Fairburn) said: “We can’t wait to bring All Killa No Filla: Live! to all you Glaswegian Legends. It’s been ten years since we started the podcast, and we can safely say nothing beats getting decked up in sequins to chat about heinous crimes in a beautiful theatre full of our brilliant listeners.” Elaine C Smith said: “I’m delighted to be back at the King’s Theatre which feels like my second home after the last few weeks in Panto there! But this time I’m returning with my new show ‘65’. I’m delighted to be part of the Glasgow International Comedy Festival which has become a huge part of Glasgow’s major events calendar. This city and its people know how to laugh and to make each other laugh, so I’m delighted to be a part of what promises to be a great time for Glasgow.” Frank Skinner said: “I'm very excited to bring my show, 30 Years of Dirt, to Glasgow. It's a fabulous mix of smart, filthy and hilarious. And so is my show.” Kieran Hodgson said: “Glasgow has been kind enough to let me make a home here, and I can't wait to repay the hospitality by making an absolute bampot of myself in one of its most prestigious venues. 'Big In Scotland' is a love letter to this great city, and finally answers the question of what it means to be Scottish when you are in no way Scottish. Plus there's a nice jacket I get to wear.” Some Laugh Live said: “We’re buzzing to be doing our biggest live show to date at the Pavilion. Our previous shows have always been chaotically brilliant and we can’t wait to bring Some Laugh and some cracking guests to such an iconic venue.” Susie McCabe said: “I'm absolutely delighted to be back in Glasgow with another solo show in the stunning King's Theatre. The perfect room and the perfect audience for another night of nonsense and laughs!” GICF highlights include Scottish favourite and recent ‘Live at the Apollo’ star Susie McCabe’s brand new show ‘The Merchant of Menace’; Off Menu podcast host and Taskmaster champion Ed Gamble; solo shows from Two Doors Down stars Kieran Hodgson and Elaine C Smith; Chris Forbes tells the tale of his almost superstar status as a basketballer; Aunt Hilda herself Caroline Rhea will enchant audiences; Frank Skinner brings the critically acclaimed ‘30 Years of Dirt’ to Glasgow following a total sell-out at Edinburgh Fringe; Mark Nelson’s biggest Scottish show yet; solo shows for TikTok stars Zara Gladman and James Gardner; Some Laugh Live’s biggest live show yet featuring some very special guests; the internet’s naughtiest, funniest and cringiest confessions will be revealed at Glasgow’s first ever Fesshole live; and even a show dedicated to one of Scotland’s most vital exports with Scott Agnew’s Square Sausage Show celebrating the life, times and lore of the Lorne… Plus, 2024 will see the festival’s first ever comedy wrestling show with Insane Championship Wrestling; family fun at Kids Comedy Club; a special live recording of Jay Lafferty’s critically acclaimed show Bahookie; Taskmaster champion Sam Campbell; Smack the Pony’s very own Fiona Allen; a hometown show for Frankie Boyle’s UK tour; musical comedy with songstresses Fascinating Aïda; LA star on the rise Lesley Liao; live shows from some of the UK’s most popular podcasts including Kiri Pritchard-McLean and Rachel Fairburn’s All Killa No Filla, Old Firm Facts Live; and so much more. Festival Director Krista MacDonald said: “We’re excited to reveal Glasgow International Comedy Festival’s biggest programme yet with 500 shows taking over the city this spring, bringing the very best of Scottish, UK and international comedy to the city’s doorsteps. The festival firmly believes that Glasgow is the funniest city in the world and we’re thrilled to showcase that with a brilliant mix of headline names and rising stars performing across our venues in March. “The festival strives to make sure comedy is open to anyone and everyone which is why this year we've introduced a completely free 'Introduction to Comedy' course for women and marginalised genders. Led by the hilarious and talented Viv Gee, the 6-week course will serve as a basic introduction to stand-up, aiming to boost confidence and encourage a more diverse new generation of talent to enter the wonderful world of comedy. “Comedy is such an integral part of Glasgow’s DNA - from conversations with strangers on a night out to some of the world’s greatest comedians, comedy plays a vital role in our city’s cultural identity. Glasgow International Comedy Festival allows us to celebrate and shine a light on that whilst nurturing the next generation of talent and enjoying sets from beloved comedians. We’re looking forward to welcoming fans to iconic venues in the city’s East End, West End and everywhere in between. We’ll see you at a show!” Glasgow Life Chair, Bailie Annette Christie, said: “As a much-anticipated annual highlight of our culturally rich events calendar, Glasgow International Comedy Festival celebrates the city’s famous appreciation of humour. The event is hugely popular with a broad range of audiences, and attracts the very best in established and emerging talent in comedy – and that’s testament not only to Glasgow’s reputation as a major player on the worldwide comedy stage but also its international renown as a great destination for entertainment. “The programme for GICF’s special 21st birthday boasts a dynamic line-up spanning an eclectic variety of superb, truly inventive comedy so our city venues are looking forward to hosting audiences from all over Glasgow and much further afield for what promises to be a fantastic series of shows in March.” From hometown heroes to international comedy stars, Glasgow International Comedy Festival has something for everyone from family-friendly shows to late-night laughs. The closing Comedy Gala on Saturday 30th March will also reveal the winner of the festival’s only official award: the Sir Billy Connolly Spirit of Glasgow Award. The Big Yin himself will choose the ultimate winner, after an independent panel of judges choose a shortlist from all applications. Any individual, show, group or collective registered with the 2024 festival are eligible to submit - applications close at 5pm on 15th January. New for 2024, GICF will also host a free ‘Introduction to Comedy’ course for women and marginalised genders in the lead up to the festival, with the aim of ensuring comedy in Glasgow is open to everyone. The 6 week complimentary course will be hosted by comedian Viv Gee, helping participants navigate the ins and outs of comedy, boost their confidence and introduce the basics of stand-up and performance. Workshops will take place at August House, culminating in a grand finale spot on a mixed bill show during the festival. Applications close 12pm, 18th January - apply now via www.glasgowcomedyfestival.com . Over 45 venues will host Glasgow International Comedy Festival events with shows in Blackfriars, Drygate, King’s Theatre, The Garage, The Glad Cafe, Glasgow Film Theatre, Glasgow Science Centre, The Glee Club, McChuills, O2 Academy, Oran Mor, Saint Luke’s and the Winged Ox, Sloans, The Stand Comedy Club, Van Winkle West End, August House and more. 2024 festival tickets are on sale at www.glasgowcomedyfestival.com

Comedian Janey Godley cancels tour from hospital after cancer spreads

Janey Godley looking at camera in glasses

Scottish comedian Janey Godley has cancelled her autumn tour explaining that her terminal ovarian cancer has spread.

Godley, 63, from Glasgow, was due to begin her Why Is She Still Here? tour, which included dates across UK cities including London , Belfast and Edinburgh, before her doctors advised her that she should stop working ‘for the foreseeable future’.

Taking to social media with a heartbreaking statement, she announced: ‘I have to cancel my upcoming tour, I’m sorry but the cancer has spread and the Beatson cancer team have advised me to stop work.

‘I am currently in hospital with sepsis ( it’s under control) pls contact your theatre for a refund – I’m sorry everyone.’

A statement said: ‘It is with huge sadness that we must announce the cancellation of Janey Godley’s autumn 2024 tour.

‘Janey has been living with stage four ovarian cancer for the past few years and the treatment from the wonderful Scottish NHS has kept the disease at bay, but sadly in the last few weeks the cancer has returned and there have been a few added complications.

‘Her doctors have now advised her that she must stop work for the foreseeable future.

‘Janey is devastated to let down her thousands of loyal fans, and the wonderful venues, she has played many times over the years. She would like to thank everyone for their love and support at this difficult time.”

Godley, who found viral fame with her dubbed pastiches of Nicola Sturgeon’s coronavirus news briefings during the pandemic, revealed she had ovarian cancer in November 2021.

In 2022 the comedian was given the all-clear and said in a post to X that a scan showed ‘no evidence of disease’.

However, she later announced that another scan had shown signs of the disease in her abdomen but added that she would continue with her tour in February and March 2023.

Godley told ITV’s Lorraine that fellow comedian Jimmy Carr played a key role in convincing her to continue her tour despite her diagnosis.

She said: ‘I decided to cancel the tour, and my mate Jimmy Carr said, “Is your mouth not working?”. I went, “Yeah, my mouth works” and he said, “Well get back on tour.”’

In a video she posted to social media last year, Godley said she had received scan results that showed the treatment she was on was keeping her terminal and incurable ovarian cancer ‘at bay’.

Earlier in the year, Godley performed dates across the country in towns and cities including Bristol, Epsom, Norwich and Milton Keynes.

Born in poverty in Glasgow in 1961, Godley went on to become a regular co-presenter on BBC Radio 4’s Loose Ends, as well as fronting BBC Radio 4 series The C Bomb.

In 2023 the comedian became the winner of the inaugural Sir Billy Connolly Spirit of Glasgow Award at the Glasgow International Comedy Festival.

Glasgow FAQs

Contact our box office on: 0871 472 0400  or email   [email protected] . Calls cost 13p per minute plus your phone company's access charge.

For Box Office opening hours , please see our contact page for details.

Below are a collection of the  most common FAQs , so please take a look here first!

Making a booking

Do i have to book in advance.

We always recommend booking in advance, as many of our shows sell out nearer to the day. You can do this online, or by calling our Box Office (opening hours can be found  here ).

How do I pay / reserve? Can I pay on the door?

We always recommend booking in advance. You can book online or over the phone by making full payment using a credit/debit card.

For some shows, as long as they are not sold out in advance, we may still have a limited number of spaces available on the door. These are first come, first served. Please note, tickets will be more expensive on the door.

Paying on the door to join another party that has pre-booked: We will do our best to accommodate you, but we can not guarantee you’ll get a seat with your pals if you’ve left it to the last minute.

Where are my tickets?

We are a ticketless venue, it's less hassle for you, and saves a few trees. Once you have booked you will receive an email confirmation of your booking. This is for your own records, there's no need to print it, but do read it through and make a note of the booking reference number (beginning with GL). Upon arriving at the club, we just need the name you booked under, this will gain you entry. If you are the organiser of the party, please ensure all members of the group have the booking reference number and party name to give at the door.

You can login to the  MyGlee  section of the website at any time, to take view or amend any current bookings you have with us.

You can also visit  MyGlee  to resend your booking confirmation if you can't find it.

How many tickets can I book?

Glee is a great night out, whether you are a solo comedy fan, a couple on the tiles or a group of 200. The capacity is the limit! If we’ve got the seats available, they’re yours for the taking. Some tour shows have restrictions on booking group size. Please contact the Box Office with any queries.

Can I add extra tickets to my booking?

As long as we still have ticket availability for the show you require, and there are no restrictions on group size, then yes. Get in touch and we’ll take you through it, or go ahead and book those online, by logging in and adding to your original booking. As with all bookings, we recommend doing this as soon as possible to avoid any disappointment.

I need to book a group, do I have to pay for everyone?

Not unless you're feeling generous! We take lots of group bookings, and we want you all to be able to sit together where possible, and have things sorted before you visit.

You can book your own ticket, and then link to another booking after you've checked out, or contact the Box Office to link your bookings. This needs to be done at least two hours before the show doors open.

Some events have limits on the group booking size. If your group is over the size limit, please contact the Box Office to check availability.

Some people in my party aren't coming now. Can we get their ticket money converted to drinks or food?

Sorry no. If you have any drop-outs, please get in touch with the box office on 0871 472 0400 / [email protected]  and we’ll see what we can do for you.

Can I have a discount?

Currently, the only discounts we offer are on some group, birthday, student and stag/hen bookings. Please contact the Box Office for further information. Alternatively, head to our  Groups  page and fill out the enquiry form.

Can we pick our seats?

For all allocated seating shows, we write a unique seating-plan each night, so we allocate your seats on the day of the show. All tickets in the same booking will be seated together. We don't know in advance exactly where you will be sat, but if you are a large group (10+), you are likely to be seated in the middle / towards the back of the auditorium.

If you have a seating request for an allocated seating show (for instance 'Not on the front row!'), please give us a call on 0871 472 0400 or email  [email protected]  so we can note it down for you. We can't 100% guarantee your request will be granted, but we will do our very best for you!

Some tour shows including Music, Cabaret & Burlesque, Spoken Word / Talks and some Comedy Tour Shows may be unreserved seating with no tables, or standing gigs. Please check the ‘More Info’ section next to all show listings to find out.

What's your age policy - do I need ID?

Our venue is obliged by local licensing to enforce a 'Challenge 25' policy, which means  anyone who looks under 25 may be asked for ID to gain entry . If when asked you fail to produce legally acceptable ID you may be refused entry without refund.

Please check the individual event for the age restrictions.

Under 18s must carry photo ID and be accompanied by an adult with a ticket to the show at all times .

Accepted forms of ID:

- Passport - Photo driving licence (provisional licences are accepted) - Card with official PASS hologram

If you cannot provide valid when requested you may be refused entry.  Refunds will not be issued for incorrectly booked tickets .

Do I need to bring my student ID?

If you have booked a student ticket type - we absolutely need to see your student ID! Accepted forms of student ID are a validated ID on the UNIDAYS, Student Beans or Totum app or an official student card that has a photo and expiry date.

If you can't provide one of the above forms of ID, you will be charged the difference between the student price and the full price ticket on the door. This is not refundable should you find your card or ID at some point later.

Food & Drink

Is food served at the shows.

Please check the individual event listing to see if food is available. For some shows, you can pre-order your food & drinks ahead of your visit by placing orders through  MyGlee  at least 2 hours before show doors open. Alternatively, you may be able to order food from the bar, or our table service system, on the night.

For certain music gigs & some tour shows, no food will be available.

We also offer bar snacks including crisps, fresh popcorn and ice cream.

Can we pre-order drinks?

Certainly! You can do this yourself online through MyGlee once your booking is in. Please note we can’t take pre-orders for drinks for unallocated/standing shows.

I have allergies, help?

Please  click here  for a full list of the allergens contained within our food menu. If you would like to discuss anything further, please contact the Box Office.

Can we get a bar tab?

Sure. We know big groups can be difficult to buy drinks for, so we are happy to set up a pre-paid bar tab for you via invoice ahead of your visit. You can also set up a bar tab on the night of the show with a credit/debit card, with optional limits. To do this, simply ask for the bar manager who will create and manage the tab for you.

Getting in/ accessibility

I have a medical condition/disability that affects my visit. what should i do.

We will do our best to help and accommodate your needs in a respectful and if required, confidential manner.

Please see our  accessibility page  for full details.

What happens if I'm running late?

Arriving during the entry time window printed on your confirmation is a condition of booking. If you arrive after this time, entry is at the discretion of the management who will do all they can to accommodate you.

If you don't make it before the show begins you will be asked to wait until the first possible opportunity of getting you in without disturbing the show.

We cannot guarantee pre-orders will be honoured if you arrive late, and refunds will not be given.

If a member of your party knows they will be late in advance, it's always useful for our box office to know this, so please give us a call.

What's the layout?

Our auditorium is usually set out with tables in front of each row of seats. These rows extend backwards from the stage in a theatre style. If you're attending an allocated seating show, your group will be allocated seats and tables together which are yours for the evening. Our staff will give you your table numbers upon arrival.

Some tour shows including Music, Cabaret & Burlesque, Spoken Word / Talks and some Comedy Tour Shows may be unreserved seating with no tables, or standing gigs. Please check the ‘More Info’ section next to all show listings to find out. On unreserved seating shows, we suggest you arrive early if you want to be sat in a specific place or with a group of friends. Although there will be enough seats for the amount of attendees, they are taken on a first-come basis.

A 3D Tour of the venue is available on our  Location & Accessibility page .

Safety & security - what do we do?

The ongoing safety of our customers, staff and performers is of absolute paramount importance. So if you’re visiting one of our venues, please take a moment to read the below information.

Security & CCTV Our management and security teams regularly review procedure and protocol with all staff. As with every live event, there are lots of things that go on behind the scenes, so please be patient if things take a little longer than you’re used to. All of our venues are monitored by CCTV at all times.

Travel light

Please arrive for the event in good time as we carry out security searches on entry.  We have no cloakroom facilities and request you do not bring large bags.

Contraband Parties found bringing in food and drink without prior arrangement, or any dangerous or illegal weapons / substances onto our premises will be denied entry without refund, and the party's details passed on to the authorities where relevant.

Speak to us If at any time you see or hear anything untoward, please speak to a member of our team – we’re here to help.

Contraband   Parties found bringing in food and drink without prior arrangement, or any dangerous or illegal weapons / substances onto our premises will be denied entry without refund, and the parties details passed on to the authorities.

Barry's had 'One too many', why can't he come in?

Join us, be merry, have a great time, but we are a licensed venue - which means we cannot legally permit entry, or serve alcohol, to anyone who has clearly stayed in the pub too long after work.

Customers who arrive already intoxicated will not be permitted entry and no refund offered. Any member of your party found in possession of or found using any prohibited drugs will be asked to leave. We reserve the right to conduct bag and body searches and also to pass any relevant information to police.

During your visit

How long do the shows last.

Our shows are live and generally unscripted, so we can't always predict with certainty when they will end. However, as a general guide our Friday Night Comedy shows finish at approximately 10.00-10.30pm. Our Saturday Night Comedy shows finish at approximately 9.45-10.15pm. Our comedy tour shows tend to finish between 9.30-10.30pm. Our music shows have a curfew of 11pm, and generally finish around 10 - 10.30pm. For more specific details on specific touring shows, please contact the Box Office.

Is there a disco after the show?

Subject to availability, on busy Friday and Saturday nights we have a late bar and music, but sadly no dance-floor.

Is there a dress code?

No, wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Some clothes are advised. Some people like to dress up, others go for casual attire. All styles are welcome at The Glee.

If you want to wear  fancy dress , go for it, we don't have a problem with you looking a bit silly. However, you will be asked to remove anything that gets in the way of other customers' enjoyment of the show (eg, massive hats, flashing lights, noisy items).

Do you have a cloakroom?

We do! Please enquire upon check-in.

Can I use my phone? Can I take photos or recordings?

No. We want you and everyone in the room to be able to enjoy the show, undisturbed. We've all scowled at someone in the cinema who's phone goes off at a crucial moment, it's the same for a live show.

We require all attendees to set their phones to silent.

We can't tell if customers are recording the show unless phones are turned off and put away, it's illegal to film a show, it is piracy.

Every time you check your phone or go to text, the phone screen lights up like a christmas tree and so does your face! This is distracting to the acts and those around and behind you.

This only applies during the show, you have plenty of time before, during intervals, and after the show to check & use your phone.  If you need to use your phone whilst the show is on, please simply leave the auditorium to do so.

Behaviour in The Glee Clubs

All customers regardless of age, gender or perceived status are expected to treat the venue, staff, acts and fellow customers with due respect and good manners.  This extends to talking during the show, which we consider to be rude and disrespectful to nearby customers, as well as the acts performing.  Any customers found to be persistently talking, heckling, or demonstrating aggressive or intimidating behaviour will be ejected without refund.

I have a complaint. What next?

If you have a complaint about food, drink or anything that is disrupting your experience, please query this with the staff on the night. If we know what's happening at the time, we will do all we can to quickly rectify this for you, and allow you to continue enjoying the evening.

If you would like to make a formal complaint after the event, or wish to send us some feedback, we welcome you to do so. Please contact our Box Office Manager at  [email protected] with as much detail as possible. All complaints must be submitted in writing and cannot be processed via telephone.

They will make sure this complaint is passed on to the managers involved. We respond in every instance in due course, once the matter has been investigated.

Everything else

Can you recommend hotels / taxis / parking.

All of our venues are central and have good access to accommodation and transport.

Please take a look at our  Location  page for further details.

This line-up has changed, what's happened?

Whilst we make every effort to keep line-ups as listed, line-ups may be subject to change on our mixed bill weekend comedy shows. Some acts are unable to play the venue after all, for reasons outside of our control. When this happens, we always replace them as soon as is possible, with another top-notch act.

If you are planning to see a specific act on a mixed bill show, please bear in mind that line-ups are subject to change, and refunds cannot be issued.

Is it funny?

Yes. Very! We book the best acts working on the UK & International circuit. These are fully-paid professionals, who know their comedy.

If you want to see who's booked in for the night of your show, head to the listings page and click on the performer's face or name to get a full bio with videos & links. Please note: line-ups are subject to change.

Why do you charge a booking fee?

The booking fee applies to every ticket. The transparency of our pricing is as important to us as it is to our customers, so we have a small and upfront booking fee that covers the cost to our business. This in turn allows us to staff our box office for all of your enquiries and ticket bookings, allows customers to book online, and to transfer tickets between shows.

Can I get a refund if I can't make it?

All bookings are non-refundable. Please read our full terms & conditions  here .

Bookings for Friday Night Comedy & Saturday Night Comedy shows are transferrable, using MyGlee . Transfers are subject to a £2 per ticket fee and are transferrable up to 1pm on the day of the show.

Please note that bookings to any other shows are not transferable or refundable once made.

I'm organising a charity event, can you donate?

We are more than happy to donate pairs of tickets for use in charitable events. However, we will need proof that this is going to the named charity.

Comedian Janey Godley has been forced to call off her tour while sharing disheartening news about her battle with incurable cancer. Hailing from Glasgow and aged 63, Janey was gearing up for her "Why Is She Still Here? " tour, set to traverse cities including London, Belfast, and Edinburgh.

However, medical advice from her doctors has led to the decision to halt her work "for the foreseeable future" as she battles sepsis. Regrettably, a statement about her career disclosed: "It is with huge sadness that we must announce the cancellation of Janey Godley's autumn 2024 tour."

Battling stage four ovarian cancer for the last few years, Janey had managed to keep it in check thanks to exceptional care from the Scottish NHS . But recent weeks have seen a distressing return of the illness as she said it was spreading, accompanied by additional complications.

Now, her doctors have strongly recommended she takes time off work, reports the Mirror .

"Janey is devastated to let down her thousands of loyal fans, and the wonderful venues, she has played many times over the years. She would like to thank everyone for their love and support at this difficult time," detailed a dispatch from the PA news agency.

In a recent update today, Janey shared that she's currently admitted in hospital being treated for sepsis, which thankfully has been brought "under control". Apologising for the necessity to cancel her autumn tour, the comedian expressed regret as she continues to contend with her health issues.

In a poignant social media video, the entertainer announced: "Hi everybody, as you'll see in the news today we've had to cancel the tour. I'm really sorry. We sold thousands and thousands of tickets and there's so many people employed and my poor bloody agent Chris has been magnificent."

Laid up in hospital, she continued: "I'm in the hospital. I've been here for eight days, I had sepsis as well, and my cancer team has advised me not to work again, just to try and get better. The sepsis is under control but the cancer is spreading, so they've told me not to work."

Janey had openly shared with her fans that she was battling ovarian cancer back in 2021, and the following year joyously announced on X, known previously as Twitter, that she had no signs of the illness following a scan. Yet, despite the all-clear given in 2022, she later informed her followers of a subsequent scan revealing the presence of the disease in her abdomen, resolved nonetheless to pursue her tour in February and March 2023.

During an appearance on ITV's Lorraine, the adored comedian shared how fellow comedian Jimmy Carr had a significant influence on her choice to push forward with her tour amid her health challenges. She recounted: "I decided to cancel the tour, and my mate Jimmy Carr said, 'Is your mouth not working? '.I went, 'Yeah, my mouth works' and he said, 'Well get back on tour.'"
