We then come to Trafalgar Cost Saver European Delight again Rome to London; 2 nights each city, Rome, Florence, Venice, Lake Lucerne and Paris then back to London. This is the Cost Saver of the Trafalgar so it is not the First Class. I am really confused between the two and am wondering if anyone has done either of these tours or travelled with these coach companies. It is my husband and our two teenagers 17 & 15 at the time of travel and we want to see as much as possible that is why we will be paying for the optional tours as well. Really need your feedback. Thanks
Use the search engine top of page "Comos coach tours" " Trafalgar coach tours" for some information
For goodness sake NO do not take those tours.. I mean it, how horrible for your kids.. I can't even imagine making my kids go on those big bus tours filled with senior citizens, early mornings,, and I mean early, chain hotels in the ourskirts of places.. and lots of stops for "shopping" ( souvenirs not clothes )
You CAN take similar trip much cheaper , and have way more fun on your own.. I have done it by myself and with my kids.
And don't be fooled by those cheap up front prices,, you will pay and pay and pay for extras, and tips will amount to hundreds for tour bus driver and guide for your family.. and yes, you are very much expected to tip them.
If you feel you absolutely must take a tour , look at Rick Steves Family tours, not cheap , but include alot more, stay in central hotels, include cater to kids and teens, or better yet, look at their "My Way" tours, which are cheaper but are not guided, they just include bussing your from town to town and your hotels and breakfasts, you can do your own sightseeing, seeing what your family likes not what they select for you.
There are a lot of advantages to escorted tours...all the planning is done for you - you don't have to decide where to stay, how to get from place to place, research what's open when or restaurants or places to shop or where to eat.
But, those are also huge disadvantages. Hotels could be less than appealing and not convenient to public transport for free time excursions, you are confined to a strict schedule, you spend a lot of time getting from place to place, the included meals may be less than satisfactory (often one hotel buffet after another, not necessarily including local specialties, rather "what the tourists like"), and so on.
The least favorable aspect of most escorted tours is value for the dollar. If you add up all the components (especially for a family of four), including transit, you'll likely be paying a huge mark-up for the "package" and the tour guide.
I probably won't be the first to tell you that one or two nights in one major destination after another will render all a huge blur.
And, those "optionals" will be far more costly than doing them on your own.
If you've never taken the family on an escorted tour that covers so many cities, consider how you'll feel (after a few days) of unpacking/packing, early morning departures, being herded around in a large group. A lot of time is spent just boarding and deboarding buses. And, some "tour mates" can be so unpleasant as to render everyone miserable but stuck with them.
With only two nights in Paris , there may be no time for going up the Eiffel Tower .
It's true that escorted tours are overwhelmingly popular with senior citizens versus younger people or families.
Keep in mind that any group can move no faster than the slowest members, which could be extremely frustrating for younger, more energetic, people.
I agree that it might be worth exploring the possibility of doing it independently yourself. That way you get to do what you want at the pace you want. I will add that I have nothing against tours as have family members who have done a couple and enjoyed them. But I agree that with teenagers perhaps not.
Another thing you have to remember is that two nights in a place only gives one full day. And those places deserve more than the time the tours are giving them. This is only my opinion, but I always feel you are better spending more time in fewer places so you actually get to see something.
aussie 2 aussie,
please heed the extremely good/sound advice offered by the very experienced and worldly posters above.
your kids would never let you forget being herded around with a lot of senior citizens - staying in hotels in some of the most inconvenient places - paying top $ for all the extras that are included in the fine print - don't do it !
For what it is going to cost for a family of four to do a tour, I think you could do a lot better yourselves. And your kids will thank you in the end. They are old enough to go for a walk on their own while you have a glass of wine in a café. Think about it.
hi, tcgc65. I agree with all of the advice above, but I'm thinking that you may have not responded because you are "back to square one" now and kind of confused. You might re-start by stating how much each of the package tours cost in total, and how many nights' lodging they included. Do you know what the sleeping configurations would be (two doubles? One quad?)? If you actually have any specifics from the companies (names of hotels, for example), you could check online to see how much the hotel would be if you booked it yourself, for example.
If you do decide to put together an independent trip (no tour group), there are plenty of people here who could help with an itinerary and keep you in a comfortable budget.
Hope you re-post soon. Everyone here is trying to help save you money and improve the quality of your experience.
That's everything I know about a tour.
Most of the folks here are independent travelers. So TA may not be the very best place to get a lot of feedback.
Cathy, I see you're new to TA. Welcome.
Rather than tag on to someone else's post, where the requests aren't really the same, why not start your own thread. The responses tend to get muddled when threads start diverting.

COMMENTS
The main difference between CostSaver and Trafalgar is the accommodations - cheaper accommodations would be further from downtown, not necessarily as nice, but still very good. As a company, their tours are very well organized and the itineraries are well thought out. Their tour guides are professional (but a lot of fun at the same time).
Contiki seemed like the best option as far as my desired destinations go, but from what I understand it probably won't be a good fit for me, as I am not an extrovert/partier. I've looked into G Adventures, Intrepid, EF Ultimate Break, and Costsaver Tours. I can't seem to find much info on Costsavers though. Would love to hear from anyone ...
Re: Costsaver tours. 1 year ago. Before you book, check distances between overnight Hotels. You can spend a lot of your vacation time on the bus, depending on itinerary. I only travel (3 times) with Trafalgar. Decent company, at least they were before pandemic. Only difference will be Hotels (location, category)
Read 872 tour reviews and get the best prices on all tours by Costsaver. Real reviews from past travellers.
Costsaver is Globus's budget option, very reputable. Budget option means cheaper hotels, sometimes a bit out of city centre and not as many included optional tours as Globus would have. Chances are you will not get a lot of families on that length of tour. If it is older people that will be active and in good shape for that length of tour.

Check the itinerary in detail to see how much time you spend on the coach and how much actually in the centres doing things.

I'm curious if anyone has experience with costsaver travel packages through Costco Travel. I'm looking at an 8-day trip to France, and both costsaver and Insights offer essentially identical trips, the same number of days, very similar itineraries, etc. Looking at the same (or nearly the same) travel dates, the cost from Insights is $2,500, and from the costsaver is $1,100.

One of the reasons the Costsaver tours can be cheaper than the regular Trafalgar tours is that they use cheaper hotels. The main problem with this is that they can be in out of the way locations, and if you want to go anywhere in your free time, you either have to join one of the Trafalgar's optional tours, or take a taxi, or find public transport if it is available.

HARD disagree. If you find the right tours you can get so much more out of your time. I did a tour through "haggis tours" and they would often stop at some random beautiful location and tell us stories of the land, the clans, the conflicts, the lore.
