Crossing the Equator and Navigating Icebergs: The A13.5 GO-SHIP cruise Returns After 52 Days At Sea

This is a repost of NOAA AOML’s original story published April 22, 2024.

Wind, waves, and icebergs pierced through morning fog – the A13.5 GO-SHIP cruise proved both tumultuous and rewarding with vast amounts of new data that bring the promise of groundbreaking future research.

A wave crashes over the side and onto the deck of the R/V Marcus Langseth.

After 52 days at sea, the A13.5 GO-SHIP cruise (short for “Global Ocean Ship-based Hydrographical Investigations Program”) returned to Cape Town, South Africa on March 23rd, successfully completing the voyage across the Equator and into the South Atlantic. Heading south from Cabo Verde on February 1st, the international team of researchers spent weeks collecting data essential for investigating global changes in ocean physics and chemistry – most notably, the uptake of atmospheric carbon under a changing climate.

Through orange sunsets and wild seas with waves that rocked the 235-foot  R/V Marcus Langseth , scientists at NOAA’s  Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory ,  Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory , the  Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Sciences , and the  Cooperative Institute for Climate, Ocean, and Ecosystem Studies  were among the crew leading efforts to analyze water samples collected from the surface to the seafloor, thousands of meters below.

A Google Earth image of the A13.5 transit line, extending south from the coast of Ghana, Africa.

A13.5 is a transect extending from the coast of Ghana to Bouvet Island at the Southern end of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, one of 58 transects across the globe designed by the international  GO-SHIP  program.  This was the first time the A13.5 transect has been successfully occupied since 2010, as the pandemic delayed attempts in 2020 and 2022. Approximately every ten years, GO-SHIP transects are “re-occupied” to collect key measurements, including salinity, temperature, dissolved inorganic carbon, and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO 2 ) – and now  Environmental DNA  (eDNA) – from samples throughout the water column to examine long-term changes in ocean properties. However, as the scientists and crew neared the Southern Ocean in the final weeks, they met an unexpected surprise – icebergs.

With sheer masses of ice floating through dense fog and smaller pieces hiding below the surface, the crew carefully navigated the frigid seas down to a latitude of 52 °S, collecting measurements down to the seafloor using the  CTD Rosette . A human-sized instrument, the CTD (“Conductivity, Temperature, Depth”) has a suite of sensors designed to measure physical properties and also collects seawater in 12-L “Niskin” bottles at 24 predetermined depths throughout the water column. While the sensor data profiles are processed immediately after each station, the seawater samples are analyzed once the CTD returns to the surface – up to four hours later. Scientists onboard deploy the CTD at a series of marked coordinates (i.e. “stations”) along the cruise track. The A13.5 cruise consisted of 113 stations.

“A typical 12-hour day on a research cruise consists of collecting and analyzing samples from depths ranging from near surface to 6,000 meters deep.”   -Chuck Featherstone, Scientist at AOML

A lone iceberg floats in the open ocean with a gray, overcast sky in the background.

Adding to decades of data monitoring fluctuations in the ocean’s uptake of heat, carbon, dissolved oxygen, and other elements across the globe, this cruise marks the first time measurements of environmental DNA have been collected along this transect. Environmental DNA (eDNA) is the DNA of whole or partial marine organisms or their traces sloughed off in the open ocean. As part of the emerging  Bio-GO-SHIP  initiative, measuring eDNA provides key insights to the biodiversity and ecosystem impact of plankton communities – specifically here, the south Atlantic. By measuring eDNA for the first time, scientists are establishing a baseline to better understand how climate change will impact marine organisms in the future.

In addition to this ship-based sampling, an array of autonomous oceanographic instruments, including 11  Biogeochemical-Argo floats , four Core Argo floats, one Deep Argo float, seven Electromagnetic Autonomous Profiling Explorer (EM-APEX) floats, and 18  surface drifters  were deployed along the cruise track. These instruments collect crucial chemical and physical ocean measurements as they drift with large ocean currents for months on end. This near-continuous ocean monitoring provides additional data, filling in the data gaps between the decadal GO-SHIP cruises, that will continue to advance global research in ocean chemistry and physics.

“Being a part of all three A13.5 attempts, I am happy to have been a part of the team to successfully complete the cruise. Carrying out a GO-SHIP level survey is not without its challenges, however, all participants involved overcame these difficulties and acquired data we have been chasing for the last four years.” – Ian Smith, a CIMAS Research Associate onboard the A13.5 cruise.

The GO-SHIP program has collected millions of data for more than a decade, and this research is becoming increasingly important as we observe climate extremes. GO-SHIP observations are essential to study the  Atlantic overturning of mass, heat, and freshwater transports . One recent study stemming from thirty years of data collected on GO-SHIP and other repeat hydrographic cruises revealed a potential weakening of the  ocean’s ability to store carbon  as global emissions continue to rise.

While emphasizing the need to reduce carbon emissions in order to meet the goals of the  Paris Agreement , this study only underscores the crucial role GO-SHIP cruises continue to play in monitoring the global ocean.  Congratulations to the science team and crew on a successful voyage!

The A13.5 GO-SHIP cruise was funded by the  NOAA Global Ocean Monitoring and Observing program and the  U.S. National Science Foundation .

U.S. ships continue to patrol the Red Sea as part of Operation Prosperity Guardian, the U.S.-led multinational effort to protect ships moving through the region. Houthi forces in Yemen continue to attack merchant shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, while U.S. naval forces in the region have continued strikes against Houthi weapons that U.S. Central Command says are a threat to naval and merchant ships. Houthi forces say they are targeting ships with connections to the United Kingdom, the U.S. and Israel.

The U.N. Security Council on Jan. 10  approved a resolution  calling on Yemen’s Houthi rebel group to “cease its brazen” attacks in the Red Sea.

On Sunday , U.S. Central Command engaged five airborne unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over the Red Sea.

On Friday , Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists launched three anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs) from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen into the Red Sea in the vicinity of MV MAISHA, an Antiqua/Barbados flagged, Liberia operated vessel and MV Andromeda Star, a UK owned and Panamanian flagged, Seychelles operated vessel. MV Andromeda Star reported minor damage but continued its voyage.

On Thursday , USCENTCOM engaged and destroyed one unmanned surface vessel (USV) and one UAV in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.

On Wednesday , USCENTCOM engaged and destroyed four UAVs over Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.

In the Gulf of Aden

On Thursday , one ASBM was launched from Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist-controlled areas of Yemen into the Gulf of Aden.

On Wednesday , a coalition vessel successfully engaged one ASBM launched from Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist-controlled areas in Yemen over the Gulf of Aden. The ASBM was likely targeting the MV Yorktown , a U.S.-flagged, owned, and operated vessel with 18 U.S. and four Greek crew members, according to U.S. Central Command.

In the Persian Gulf

U.S. Coast Guard Sentinel-class Fast Response Cutters are forward-deployed to the region under Patrol Forces Southwest Asia (PATFORSWA). PATFORSWA deploys Coast Guard personnel and ships with U.S. and regional naval forces throughout the Middle East. Initially deployed in 2003 to support Operation Iraqi Freedom, PATFORSWA is now a permanent presence based out of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

In the Eastern Pacific

Amphibious assault ship   USS  Boxer  (LHD-4)  returned to San Diego, Calif., delaying its deployment after suffering a casualty,  USNI News reported . The two San Diego dry docks large enough to accommodate a big deck amphibious warship are currently occupied, complicating the repairs of  Boxer .

Naval Sea Systems Command told USNI News last week that it has not yet made a decision on the way forward.

“ Boxer  is currently pier side at Naval Station San Diego. As inspections and assessments are continuing, a decision on the most efficient way to execute repairs is still being determined,” reads the statement.

In the Mediterranean and Eastern Atlantic

The ships carrying pieces to build a humanitarian aid pier in Gaza are now mostly in the Mediterranean Sea.

Three U.S. Army watercraft, a Military Sealift Command transport and a Maritime Administration ready reserve transport ship are off the coast of Gaza.

As of Monday, USAV  General Frank S. Benson  (LSV-1), USAV  Montorrey  (LCU-2030), USAV  Matamoros  (LCU-2026) were operating in the Eastern Mediterranean, along with Military Sealift Command ships USNS  1st Lt. Baldomero Lopez  (T-AK-3010) and MARAD ship MV  Roy P. Benavidez  (TAKR-306). USAV SP4 James A. Loux (LSV-4) was in Souda Bay, according to ship spotters. USAV  Wilson Wharf  (LCU-2011) was in the Eastern Atlantic off the coast of North Africa, not yet in the Mediterranean Sea.

Lopez  and USNS  2nd Lt. John P. Bobo (TAK-3008)  were transporting parts of Naval Beach Group One’s similar floating pier system to operate in tandem with the Army’s system.

2nd Lt. John P. Bobo  returned to Jacksonville, Fla.,  after experiencing a fire in its engine room, the Navy said Wednesday. The crew extinguished the fire and no injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation, according to the statement. As of Monday USNS GySgt. Fred. W. Stockham  (T-AK-3008) was in Jacksonville.

The general concept will have the Army build a pier that it will anchor to the shore in Gaza, with no U.S. personnel setting foot on land. The Navy will build a transfer point two to three miles offshore where cargo – likely originating in Cyprus – will be transferred to the Army watercraft to be taken to the pier.

Based on the initial timelines, the pier could be completed by mid-May.

State investigating amid reports cruise ship sailed too close to Kauai’s Na Pali Coast

KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The state Land Department is investigating after Kauai advocates say a cruise ship got too close to shore at the Na Pali Coast.

Kauai community advocates said the ship appeared to be in very shallow water and about 1,000 feet offshore.

According to Celebrity Cruise’s website, the Celebrity Edge is advertising Hawaii cruises from Vancouver.

But a passenger told HNN they came from Sydney, Australia.

The state Land Department is investigating after Kauai advocates say a cruise ship got to...

“It’s just plain wrong to be in that close to the shore. Period,” said resident Presley Wann.

“I find it very offensive, very upsetting because of the lack of protocol.”

One Na Pali tour manager and captain says it’s the first time he’s seen an incident like this.

“I’ve never seen this in 20 years of Na Pali Coast tours in my life. It’s mind blown,” said Sam Martin.

The DLNR said it’s “aware of the situation and is investigating. We are also consulting our partners with the U.S. Coast Guard and state Department of Transportation on this matter. We have nothing more to add at this time.”

Added state DOCARE Enforcement Chief Jason Redulla: “We’ve received numerous reports. Our officers on the island of Kauai and in Honolulu are working this case.”

Wann worries about cultural and environmental impacts.

“Some of the shots that were taken from the air actually showed the sand being disturbed at the bottom so all of these environmental impacts that it created was very upsetting to me,” said Wann.

The ship was docked at Honolulu Harbor on Wednesday and Wann met with the state Boating Division.

“I understand that that DLNR has taken at least one of their agencies and may have been on board taking statements from the cruise ship,” said Wann.

Hawaii administrative rules mention a 3,000 foot seaward from shore rule and commercial vessels with more than 50 passengers are not permitted to operate with Na Pali Coast Ocean waters.
