Shore Excursions and Tours for Cruisers to San Juan

San Juan Shore Excursions

We took a cruise recently, and I did all the planning for our excursions in the various ports. For those of you coming into San Juan and trying to plan your day in port — I feel your pain. It is not easy to decide what there is to do in (or around) San Juan, and there are so many questions that need answering. Will I have enough time in port? How will I get there from the ship? Do I need a guide or can I do it on my own?

I will try to make your planning a little bit easier by offering suggestions and ideas that will (hopefully) answer some of your questions. Of course, you don’t have to be on a cruise to use this list of things to do in Puerto Rico. Anyone that is spending time in the Old San Juan or metro area will find this info handy.

Puerto Rico Basics

Language — Puerto Rico has two official languages; Spanish and English. Spanish is the more common language throughout the island, but English is widely spoken in the tourist areas.

Currency — As part of the US, the US dollar is our currency. We don’t negotiate prices when shopping, though there may be some negotiation in jewelery stores and with street vendors. But, for the most part, the price marked on an item is the price — plus sales tax (know locally as IVU , by its Spanish initials).

Forms of Payment — Everyone prefers cash, but credit cards (MC, Visa, AmEx) are widely accepted in stores and restaurants.

San Juan Shore Excursions

What to Buy — Looking for that special souvenir that is unique to Puerto Rico? Try some locally-grown coffee, Puerto Rican rum, items related to the Three Kings (especially around the holidays), paper maché vejigante masks, bobbin lace ( mundillo ) items, and candies made from coconut or tropical fruits.

Cellphone Coverage & WIFI — AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint all have operations and coverage here in Puerto Rico. Though Verizon is no longer represented on the island, Verizon cellphones work here. Most "nationwide" plans include Puerto Rico, but double-check with your carrier to make sure you won’t get hit with huge roaming charges if you use your phone here. Many of the plazas in Old San Juan have free WIFI, and many restaurants and bars offer WIFI for their customers.

Where Does My Ship Dock?

San Juan Shore Excursions

For a Day in Port — All the ships in port for the day or evening will dock right in Old San Juan at Pier 3 or Pier 4. On rare occasions, for example during high season (winter) when a bunch of ships are in port for the day, it is possible for 1 or 2 ships to have to use the Frontier Pier or the Pan Am Pier (across the bay from Old San Juan). If you end up at the Pan Am Pier, you will have to take a taxi to Old San Juan . There is nothing within walking distance of the Pan Am Pier. A Sheraton with a small casino and the Puerto Rico Convention Center are about a mile away.

For Embarkation & Debarkation — The Royal Caribbean and Princess cruise lines embark/debark at the Pan Am Pier, across the bay from Old San Juan. Carnival and other cruise lines use Pier 3 and Pier 4 right in Old San Juan. There are even times when ships use the Frontier Pier. So double-check your cruise itinerary for exact pier, as they sometimes switch piers depending on ship traffic.

The Cruise TT web site lists the ships scheduled to be in port on a given day. You can use this to see how much of a crowd to expect in port on the day that you’ll be here.

What To Do In Port In San Juan?

Almost any activity that you would want to do on a Caribbean island is available here in Puerto Rico. The problem is that Puerto Rico is a pretty large island (relatively speaking as compared to other Caribbean islands), so travel times make some things not feasible for a cruise ship passenger to do during a short time in port.

We do try to keep our event calendar up to date with festivals and other celebrations going on throughout the island. Unfortunately, the dates for many events aren’t announced more than a couple weeks in advance. So check back frequently!

Grabbing a Bite or a Drink

Sure, you have a full meal plan on your ship. But Old San Juan is loaded with all sorts of great restaurants. It’s hard to get a bad meal here.

Many people ask about places to get real , authentic Puerto Rican food. There are so many places … Raices, Mojitos, Cafe Puerto Rico, EL Jibarito, La Mallorca, El Punto, and Cafe Manolin.

San Juan Shore Excursions

Obviously, Puerto Rico has a Spanish heritage, so Spanish tapas are also popular, and can be found at places like El Picoteo, Rosario, and Baru.

You can also find Italian, Mexican, Japanese, and … just about any other type of restaurants throughout Old San Juan. .

Who to use for my excursion?

When planning an excursion away from the ship and the Old San Juan area, there are questions that you’ll be asking yourself. Should I take on of the trips offered by the ship? Should I go with a group? Should I do something on my own?

The first things you need to take into account is your budget, and how adventurous you want to be. There are pros and cons to both organized tours and do-it-yourself excursions. Sometimes, you don’t feel like thinking and prefer to be led by the hand, so to speak. At other times, you don’t feel like being weighed down by a group or having to stick to someone else’s schedule. You need to decide which type of trip you prefer.

San Juan Shore Excursions

Using the ship excursions has some perks — they are well organized (the meeting spot is usually just as you exit the ship) and it gives you some extra "insurance" (if you are late coming back from an ship’s excursion, the ship will not leave without you). However, these are usually large groups, they do cost a little extra for the level of convenience, and they sometimes have strict restrictions (often more strict than required by the actual operator of the excursion).

Independent bus tours are usually half-day trip to various parts of the island. You can get onto one of these just as you get off of the cruise ship dock, usually on the sidewalk or street. Once you choose one, you will typically have to wait in the bus until the bus driver has "enough" people to start the tour. These tours are usually a little cheaper than ship-sponsored trips, but they often go to the same or similar places as the ship’s tours.

Private guides are also available for customized tours, either pre-arranged or on the spot. You will have to track down these guides on your own, and many do not have web sites. We met Raul from Natural Wonders PR, he offered an interesting tour of the rain forest (not only the usual stops). We have never gone on a tour with him, but he gets good reviews (he has a website). Or you can try getting information on good tour guides on CruiseCritic or ShoreTrips . Just be sure to do your due diligence , and look for public comments, ratings, and reviews from previous customers. These types of trips are a little less expensive than the ship’s excursions, but more expensive than doing it on your own.

Finally, you can rent a car and have a self led adventure. Renting a car is the least expensive and most flexible route, but you do miss some commentary from a guide, and you have to spend precious vacation time dealing with the car rental. Many of the activity operators allow you to book on your own and save money (and some may provide or arrange transportation). Contact them and ask.

If you have a late (after 2pm) flight on debarkation day, there are some tours that will pick you (and your luggage) up at the ship, take you on an excursion for a couple hours, and then drop you (and your luggage) off at the airport. This is a nice way to spend a few hours before your flight, instead of just sitting at the airport.

Things to Do if You Have More time

If you have a full day (or almost full day) in port, there are a bunch of things that you can do that are within 1 or 1½ hour-drive of Old San Juan. You can check our island maps and our Place Finder & GPS Coordinates to help with locating activities and driving directions. These activities require a little more travel time, and a little more planning on your part, but they are totally worth the extra effort!

Save a Spot - Most Popular Walking Tour

San Juan is one of the Caribbean’s hottest and most beloved cruise stops, welcoming visitors to explore one of the best-preserved Spanish Colonial historic cities. We are celebrating five centuries of history in our beautiful Old San Juan, we invite you to celebrate with us.  Five centuries ago, our capital city was walled and protected by fortifications, keeping outsiders out.  We are proud of the fact that in modern days, San Juan is often referred to as one of the happiest and most welcoming places on earth.

Visitors can easily walk to explore blue cobblestone streets in Old San Juan leading to UNESCO historic sites, museums, restaurants, unique shops, and elegant squares, as well as participate in the many events that keep our traditions and vibrant culture alive.  A short taxi drive from Old San Juan there’s more to see and do.

If your cruise begins in San Juan, we encourage you to extend your stay by at least 2 nights, we are confident that once you get a little taste of what Puerto Rico has to offer, you’ll regret not having stayed a few more nights.  If your situation does not allow it, we hope that when you visit, you feel a warm welcome and come back to visit again.

Frequently asked questions, do i need a passport for a cruise to / from san juan, puerto rico.

Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, and individuals born on the island are U.S. citizens.  You do not need a passport if flying from the U.S. to Puerto Rico or vice versa. You only need a government-issued photo ID, like a driver’s license. If you are a U.S. citizen, and you board a cruise ship at a U.S. port (which includes San Juan), travel only within the Western Hemisphere, and return to the same U.S. port on the same ship, you will most likely NOT need a passport unless you enter a foreign country as part of the cruise itinerary. A U.S. or Puerto Rico driver’s license should suffice.  For children under 16, a birth certificate is typically required. However, check with your cruise line to be absolutely sure what documentation is needed.

Are there places to store luggage in San Juan before or after a cruise

  • If you’re staying at a hotel in Old San Juan (near Old San Juan Cruise Piers) or the Puerto Rico Convention Center District (near the Pan American Pier), they will typically hold your luggage before check-in or after check-out for a few hours.  See map of hotels near cruise port .
  • Some tour operators offering sightseeing tours will hold your luggage
  • In addition, the following restaurant will hold your luggage, please call to confirm this service is still offered. – Barrachina Restaurant – 104 Calle Fortaleza, Old San Juan.  Storage is free (try to drink or eat something there & leave a tip) | Storage hours: 9 am – 5 pm, 7 days/week.  ph. 787-725-7912.  Note: It is a 1/2 mile uphill walk from Old San Juan Pier 4, and a 1/4 mile walk from Pier 1.
  • The San Juan International Airport offers luggage storage daily from 7 am to 10 pm on the 2nd level of Terminal D.  For more information call 787-791-3371

What pier will my cruise ship dock at or embark from in San Juan?

In general , arriving transit ships that are day-docking for one afternoon/ evening in San Juan usually dock at the Old San Juan Piers (Muelle 1, 3, 4, 6), so you can walk right out into Old San Juan and avoid taking a taxi.  We believe an exception to this rule to be Celebrity Cruises which typically day-dock at the Pan American Pier.  Cruises that start in San Juan (home departure port) usually leave from the Pan American Pier Terminals I or II.  However, Carnival cruises embark from the Old San Juan Pier 4 terminal if San Juan is the home departure port.  Again, be sure to contact your cruise line or call the San Juan Cruise Port at 787-723-2260 to verify the arrival or departure pier location.

Cruise in Old San Juan Port

3 Great Port Day Cruise Excursions in Puerto Rico

Kristy Tolley Profile

Inspiration on what to do during your cruise ship’s port of call in San Juan.

A bevy of cruise lines include a stop in San Juan on their Caribbean itineraries. Several of them—Disney Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Viking Ocean Cruises and others— depart and end in San Juan, as well.

Time in port may vary, but is generally from five to eight hours, providing passengers ample time to explore Puerto Rico’s lures. Here are a few cruise excursion ideas for your Puerto Rico port of call, how long to plan for them and helpful tips.

1. Historical Tours

cruise ship excursions san juan puerto rico

The oldest city in the U.S. and its territories, Old San Juan is replete with historical gems and a convenient cruise excursion in Puerto Rico. It’s home to the first Spanish fortification, La Fortaleza (designated both a San Juan National Historic Site and UNESCO World Heritage site). Constructed between 1533 and 1540, La Fortaleza is the oldest governor’s mansion in the Western Hemisphere. The site includes San Felipe del Morro (El Morro), bastions, powder houses and old city walls. Your entrance receipt also gets you into San Juan’s other notable fortress, San Cristóbal (and vice versa).

We also recommend spending time at Casa Blanca Museum, built by Puerto Rico’s first governor, Juan Ponce de León. The governor died before he could move in, but his family occupied the home for 250 years. A tour reveals a glimpse of the life of modern Puerto Rico’s founding family.

Other San Juan landmarks to add to your tour: The Capitol, San Juan Cemetery, The Narrow House and the Church of San José.

Length of time: Up to four hours

Excursion tips: Wear comfortable clothes/shoes and sunscreen. Also, bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated. Break up your tour with lunch at Sophia’s Old San Juan or El Jibarito.

Check out our article Walk Through Puerto Rico’s History in Old San Juan, a self-guided tour of historic Old San Juan .

2. El Yunque

cruise ship excursions san juan puerto rico

A visit to this 28,000-acre natural wonderland is a bucket-list experience for many. It’s no wonder. El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, situated about 45 minutes south of San Juan on the slopes of the Luquillo Mountains. Hundreds of native plant species and almost 200 kinds of wildlife live in this thriving ecosystem, including the coqui frog and one of the planet’s most endangered birds, the Puerto Rican parrot.

If you’re doing an El Yunque cruise excursion on your own, visit when it opens at 7:30am. Most tour groups arrive between 9am and 10am, which should provide plenty of time to enjoy it in relative solitude.

Length of time: Up to four hours for a half-day tour. Longer tours can take 6–12 hours.

Excursion tips: To manage visitor capacity, reservations are now required. You can purchase tickets up to 30 days prior to your visit at Recreation.gov.   Bring a rain poncho and wear comfortable, waterproof shoes. Also, pack food and water (unless you’re with a group tour that covers meals and beverages). Don’t forget your sunscreen and bug spray!

3. Beach Excursions

cruise ship excursions san juan puerto rico

Convenient to the cruise pier and a quick taxi ride from downtown, Condado Beach and Isla Verde Beach are popular options for cruise passengers. These bustling beaches provide easy access to high-rise hotels, restaurants and shopping, as well as water sports vendors.

Very close to Isla Verde Beach is one of Puerto Rico’s best local breweries: Ocean Lab Brewing Co. Located right next to Vivo Beach Club (to park you actually go through Vivo’s entrance), this brewery has an open space with an amazing view of the beach. Besides beer on tap, they also serve cocktails and other drinks. At the onsite restaurant and shop you can buy beers to go and merchandise.

– Rogelio Vazquez

Further afield, Luquillo Beach is considered one of Puerto Rico’s best public beaches. Calm waters make for ideal swimming, kayaking and other activities. It’s also near El Yunque, so some tour operators offer a full-day beach/rainforest excursion. For a longer port of call, consider a relaxing catamaran cruise and snorkeling tour to the remote Icacos Cay or Vieques.

Length of time: Beach excursion times vary on proximity to cruise port and how long you plan to spend at the beach.

Excursion tips: If you plan to swim, wear reef-safe sunscreen. Don’t forget a towel, snorkeling gear, snacks and water (unless provided by the tour operator).

More tips when planning your Puerto Rico cruise excursion:

  • Pay attention to your excursion’s departure location. If it doesn’t leave from San Juan, you’ll need to arrange transportation on your own (and factor in the extra travel time).
  • Gratuities for your tour guides usually aren’t included. Consider a tip of 15 percent (or more). Your local guides work hard to show you a great time!
  • Does your cruise begin and end in San Juan? Extend your Puerto Rico visit with a pre- or post-cruise stay. You’ll have more time to explore the island.

San Juan cruise port

Region Bahamas - Caribbean - Bermuda

Local Time 2024-08-30 05:39

Port San Juan cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from San Juan, Puerto Rico. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

San Juan is Puerto Rico's principal/main port (locode PRSJU), as well as the largest city (population around 350,000) and the country's capital. San Juan is the second-oldest capital (after Santo Domingo Dominicana ) that the Europeans/Spaniards established in the Caribbean.

Originally the island was named San Juan and the port - Ciudad de Puerto Rico. They swapped over time.

San Juan cruise port schedule has booked ships operating mainly on Eastern and Southern Caribbean itineraries leaving roundtrip from Florida USA ports. San Juan is also homeport to several major cruise companies operating roundtrips out of Puerto Rico. Among the most popular Caribbean island port destinations often combined with Puerto Rico are Windward Islands ( St Lucia , Dominica , St Vincent ,  Barbados , Tobago , Grenada ), Leeward Islands ( St Maarten , Guadeloupe , St Kitts ) and Dutch Antilles ( Curacao , Bonaire , Aruba ).

All Puerto Rico beaches are open to the public. However, public beaches (served by lifeguards and with facilities) are called here balnearios. They are free of charge (no entry fees) but charge for parking, as well as lockers and showers. The most popular are El Escambron and Isla Verde.

In early April 2017 was announced the RCG-Royal Caribbean Group's partnership with Puerto Rico Ports Authority (government-owned corporation) for improving the Port's cruise pier "Pan American Wharf 2". The decision followed RCCL's announcements about homeporting Freedom of the Seas in San Juan (starting May 2018). To needed development investments will optimize the port's cruise docking infrastructure. The works will include boarding bridge improvements, safety checkpoints improvements, restrooms improvements, mooring improvements, new passenger registration desks, building improvements, enlarging the terminal's baggage inspection area, also dredging in the pier's ship docking area.

In August 2022, GPH-Global Ports Holding (2003-founded, UK-based corporation, currently the world's largest cruise port operator) signed a 30-year concession agreement with Puerto Rico Ports Authority for the San Juan Cruise Port.

  • Under the concession terms, GPH agreed to pay an upfront fee of USD 75 million.
  • During Investment Phase I, GPH agreed to invest ~US$100M on critical cruise dock repairs (at Pier 1, Pier 4, and the Pan American Piers/1 & 2), rebuilding and upgrading all terminal facilities and the walkway.
  • During Investment Phase II, GPH agreed to invest ~US$250M in expanding the Port's capacity by building a new cruise pier and a new terminal (at Pier 11 and Pier 12) with capacity to handle the world’s largest passenger liners.
  • Through its wholly-owned subsidiary SJCP (San Juan Cruise Port Ltd) GPH started operations on February 15, 2024.

During season 2015-2016, Royal Caribbean ships alone brought to Port San Juan 574,140 passengers. During season 2017-2018, this number reached 700,000. In 2019 (before the Coronavirus crisis) the cruise port handled ~1,8 million tourists.

The cruise port was visited by 6,8 million cruise tourists in 2008-2009, 7,9M (2014-2015) and 1,5M (2015-2016). Cruise tourists contribute around 7,1% to Puerto Rico's economy. To be able to handle the world's largest cruise vessels , Port San Juan invested ~USD 8 million in building a 3rd dock. On December 28, 2016, the port was visited by Harmony of the Seas (max capacity 6314 pax / 2300 crew).

For FY2018, Puerto Rico estimated that ~1,7 million cruise ship tourists will arrive on the scheduled 540 ship calls, generating around USD 250M for the local economy. The tourism industry represents ~7% of the country's economy. 2018 ended with handled nearly 1,8 million cruisers via 517 ship calls (21% increase over 2017).

In late-September 2020, PRPA (Puerto Rico Ports Authority / managing company) issued a request for proposals for Isla Grande's Pier 15 drydock (southeast from the cruise port). The future project includes the facility's repair (overhaul), maintenance and operation. The drydock was originally built (in the early-1940s) and operated by the US Navy, acquired by PRPA in the late-1990s and not used since 2000. The project could generate ~USD 20M (in private investments), ~USD 16M (annual impact) and support ~400 local jobs. The renovated drydock could be used for general maintenance works and refurbishments of various ship types (including cargo, smaller-sized cruisers, ferries , superyachts). The drydock has length ~600 ft (183 m), width 102 ft (31 m) and depth 26 ft (10 m), which allows it to serve ships with max LOA length 400 ft (121 m).

By annual passenger traffic (statistical data 2019), the Caribbean's top-10 largest airports are:

  • Luis Munoz Marin Airport/aka Isla Verde (San Juan Puerto Rico) with ~9,5 million pax
  • Punta Cana Airport ( Punta Cana Dominicana ) with ~7,2M pax
  • Jose Marti Airport ( Havana Cuba ) with 5,7+M pax
  • Sangster Airport ( Montego Bay Jamaica ) with ~4,8M pax
  • Lynden Pindling Airport ( Nassau Bahamas ) with ~4,1M pax
  • Las Americas Airport ( Santo Domingo Dominicana ) with ~4M pax
  • Piarco Airport ( Port-of-Spain Trinidad ) with 2,8+M pax
  • Queen Beatrix Airport ( Oranjestad Aruba ) with 2,5+M pax
  • Pointe-a-Pitre Airport ( Pointe-a-Pitre Guadeloupe ) with ~2,5M pax
  • Grantley Adams Airport ( Bridgetown Barbados ) with ~2,3M pax

This explains why these port cities are used as seasonal turnaround ports for homeporting (roundtrip itineraries) by many major cruise companies with ship deployments in the Caribbean.

San Juan cruise terminal

San Juan cruise port terminal has three piers – Old San Juan piers (Pier 1, 3, 4, 6), "Navy Frontier Pier" and "Pan American Pier" (wharf 2).

All tour operators in San Juan provide guides trained through "Aquila's Center for Cruise Excellence". This is a staff training program that helps cruise port destinations and local tour operators to achieve highest standards of service.

Old San Juan Piers

They are located at Marina Street, the center of Old San Juan. All the major sightseeing places are within easy walking distance.

  • Pier 4 is located at the north shore. Carnival Cruise Lines manages the terminal.
  • Pier 6 is a marginal dock with length 1196 ft (365 m).

In 2014, Pier 3 was expanded to allow berthing of the world's largest cruise vessels (RCI's Oasis-class). In 2016, on Pier 3 (port's 3rd cruise dock) started construction works for a new, 2-story terminal building housing restaurants, galleries, entertainment venues, a large duty-free shopping complex. The USD 8 million project was an investment by Duty Free Americas (US travel retail stores chain with over 180 shops). The port additionally invested US$1M for security equipment. RCI / Royal Caribbean also participated in the project, which completion was scheduled for 2018.

In 2019, Bacardi Global Travel Retail created a new Bacardi-dedicated rum bar within Pier 4's SMT Duty-Free (retail store). The new Bacardi Bar also offers cocktails sampling and branded merchandise (hats, T-shirts, memorabilia).

Frontier Pier

Frontier Pier has only one berth. It serves cruise liners and also commercial (cargo) ships.

Pan America Pier

Pan America Pier is located to the south of Old San Juan. The modern San Juan cruise ship terminal building at Pan America Pier is in Isla Grande. It serves larger cruise vessels.

Port San Juan also has drydock facilities (used for ship repairs and refurbishments ) located between Pier 15 and Pier 16.

Oceania Cruises will sail from Port Tampa Bay beginning in 2026

  • Shauna Muckle Times staff

A new luxury cruise line is coming to Tampa Bay. Oceania Cruises will set sail for the Caribbean and Panama Canal starting in February 2026.

The 670-guest Insignia ship will offer guests five options of seven- to 20-night cruises from February to April, according to a media release from Port Tampa Bay. Passengers will dock in Costa Maya, Mexico; Puerto Limon, Costa Rica; Cartagena, Colombia; and other similar destinations.

Oceania, a Miami-based subsidiary of Norwegian Cruise Lines, operates eight luxury vessels that traverse all seven continents. The line’s “Around the World” cruise takes guests to over 100 destinations in 180 days — prices for 2026 start at $42,000. On board, guests can access fine-dining options like Polo Grill, an American steakhouse, and Toscana, an Italian venue.

Starting prices for sailings from Tampa currently range from $2,200 for a seven-night Caribbean cruise to $5,800 for a 20-night Panama Canal cruise.

Here’s a look at the five itineraries that will sail from Tampa in 2026:

  • Tropical Harmony : February 22-March 3, nine days. Starting in Bridgetown, Barbados; Oranjestad, Aruba; Montego Bay, Jamaica; Costa Maya, Mexico; Cozumel, Mexico; ending in Tampa.
  • Leeward Isles Serenade : March 3-18, 15 days. Starting in Tampa; San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; St. John’s, Antigua; Roseau, Dominica; Basseterre, St. Kitts; Frederiksted, St. Croix; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; ending in Tampa.
  • Western Caribbean Escape : March 18-25, seven days. Starting in Tampa; Cozumel; Belize City, Belize; Roatan, Honduras; Costa Maya; ending in Tampa.
  • Palms and Panama Canal : March 25-April 4, ten days. Tampa; Cozumel; Costa Maya; Belize City; Roatan; Puerto Limon; Colon, Panama; ending with one overnight stay in Panama City, Panama. The ship crosses the Panama Canal during daylight hours.
  • Panama Canal Connoisseur : March 25-April 14, 20 days. Starting in Tampa; Cozumel; Costa Maya; Belize City; Roatan; Puerto Limon; Colon; one overnight stay in Panama City; Cartagena; Willemstad, Curacao; Oranjestad, Aruba; Montego Bay; George Town, Cayman Islands; ending in Miami.

Port Tampa Bay now has six cruise lines that dock at the port. Oceania will join Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line and Margaritaville at Sea.

Cruises represent a quarter of the port’s revenue, and that share is rising. In fiscal year 2025, the port expects 373 sailings with around 1.6 million passengers. This year, around 1.2 million people are projected to sail from Tampa’s port as the industry makes a rapid comeback post-pandemic.

The 15-day “Leeward Isles Serenade” includes a visit to San Juan, with Condé Nast Traveler tips on what to explore.

Oceania Cruises has announced a series of new Caribbean and Panama Canal sailings in the 670-guest Insignia, departing from Tampa, Florida, early next year.

Among them is the “Leeward Isles Serenade,” a 15-day voyage starting on March 3 that will feature a call in San Juan, Puerto Rico, along with other Caribbean destinations such as St. Maarten, Antigua, Dominica, St. Kitts, St. Croix and Tortola, British Virgin Islands.

San Juan is one of the standout ports on the new itinerary. Guests will be provided with insider tips from Condé Nast Traveler editors on what to explore in the city.

The recommendations include visiting Olé in Old San Juan for custom-made hats and exploring its “enticing dining scene including Chef Martin Louzao’s duo of high-concept restaurants, Cocina Abierta and Oriundo . Be sure to check out his latest venture, Café Caleta , a small tavern with countryside vibes and an enticing international menu,” Oceania’s news release reads. “The café spills into a charming cobblestoned street in Old San Juan, a stone’s throw away from the city’s main cathedral, the Basílica Menor de San Juan Bautista.”

Oceania calls itself “the world’s only true foodie cruise line,” not only offering “The Finest Cuisine at Sea,” but also “thanks to its vibrant culinary scene including street food experiences, high-end gourmet dining at venues from a variety of Michelin Guide restaurants, and immersive culinary tours led by local experts,.”

Insignia’s seven- to 20-night itineraries will also explore other Caribbean islands, including St. Thomas; calls in Cozumel, Costa Maya, and Belize City; and a daylight transit of the Panama Canal and overnight stay in Panama City, according to the release.

Frank A. Del Río, president of Oceania Cruises, emphasized the significance of the new sailings, stating, “Port Tampa Bay represents an exciting new chapter as Oceania Cruises becomes the first ultra-premium cruise line to have dedicated voyages from Tampa.”

  • Carnival Vista Cancels September Cruise for Propulsion Repairs

Picture of Doug Parker

Doug Parker

  • August 27, 2024

Carnival Cruise Line’s flagship Vista-class vessel, Carnival Vista, continues to face technical difficulties that impact its sailing schedule.

A large cruise ship, Carnival Vista, sailing on the open sea under a clear blue sky.

The vessel has experienced ongoing propulsion issues that have affected its cruising speed, leading to multiple itinerary changes and now, a full cancellation of an upcoming cruise.

Current Sailing of Carnival Vista

Carnival Vista, which is currently on an 8-night Eastern Caribbean sailing that began on August 24, 2024, from Port Canaveral, Florida, has already seen its itinerary adjusted to accommodate the ship’s reduced cruising speed.

Carnival offered a $50 onboard credit per stateroom as compensation for the changes.

Carnival Vista Changes for September 1, 2024

carnival vista caribbean aerial exterior

Carnival has announced a partial itinerary change for the cruise scheduled to embark on September 1, 2024, due to the same propulsion issues.

The revised itinerary will replace planned visits to Grand Turk and Amber Cove with stops in Nassau and Freeport, The Bahamas.

Affected guests are being offered a $200 onboard credit per stateroom and full refunds for any pre-purchased shore excursions.

Guests also have the option to cancel their cruise for a full refund if they decide that the new itinerary does not meet their vacation expectations.

Cancellation of the September 7, 2024

port canaveral florida

Carnival Cruise Line has now made the decision to cancel the September 7, 2024 cruise entirely to allow more time for the necessary repairs.

In a letter to guests booked on this cruise, Carnival apologized for the inconvenience caused by the cancellation.

All guests will receive a full refund for their cruise fare, shore excursions, and any pre-purchased items from the FUNShop.

Impact on Future Sailings

Ships in Port

Carnival Vista, operating out of Port Canaveral , was scheduled to continue alternating between 6- and 8-night Caribbean itineraries through 2026.

Carnival has not yet announced how long the ship will be out of service or whether additional cruises might be impacted.

Ongoing Carnival Vista Propulsion Issues

carnival vista dry dock

Propulsion issues are no stranger to Carnival’s Vista-class ships . In June 2023, Carnival Vista was taken out of service for repairs.

In 2019, the company had to take Carnival Vista out of service for two weeks to repair propulsion units. This was done by bringing the  world’s largest floating dry dock  down from Northern Europe and lifting the ship out of the water off the Bahamas coast.

The most recent issues manifested during the ship’s August 4 sailing and have persisted through the following voyages, causing multiple delays and changes.

Despite efforts to repair the ship’s engines while docked at Port Canaveral on August 24, 2024, the technical difficulties have not been fully resolved.

Princess Cruises has announced it will be sailing to every region of the Caribbean in 2026 for its “biggest summer Caribbean cruise season ever,” with its ships stopping in summer hot spots such as the Bahamas , Turks and Caicos and Mexico.

The cruise company will have two ships departing from Florida , the Regal Princess and the Caribbean Princess , to take vacationers around the Caribbean, sailing to all regions for the first time.

The cruises are now available to book, with over 90 voyages sailing to every region of the Caribbean from two Florida ports, Port Canaveral in Orlando and Fort Lauderdale/Port Everglades.

“Princess continues to expand access to our world-class premium experience now operating from eight North America homeports,” John Padgett, the president of Princess Cruises, said.

“With ships now departing from both Central Florida and South Florida, it’s easier and more convenient than ever to set sail aboard the iconic Love Boat,” he added.

Caribbean Princess , which has accommodation for over 3,000 guests, is offering trips to both the eastern and western Caribbean on seven-day itineraries, with an option to combine the two regions on a 14-day ‘Caribbean Adventurer’ sailing.

The variety of cruises includes a six-day or seven-day trip around the eastern Carribean and the Turks and Caicos islands, a seven-day voyage around the eastern Carribean with Puerto Rico , and a seven-day sailing trip to the western Caribbean and Mexico .

Regal Princess , which has room for over 3,500 holidaymakers, is offering journeys to all regions of the Caribbean in the summer of 2026, including eastern, southern and western islands.

The cruise will embark on a seven-day eastern or western Caribbean itinerary or an eight-day cruise around the southern Carribean with the ABC Islands.

On the southern cruise, stopping at Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao in April 2026, guests can also take advantage of extended port stays in Aruba and Curaçao, giving vacationers a chance to explore the islands for a little longer.

As for the seven-day cruises, two will journey around the eastern Caribbean, one with the Bahamas and one with St Thomas, and one other will sail around the western Caribbean, stopping at Mexico.

Guests who also want to make their holiday a little longer and visit multiple regions can sail on a combination cruise for 14 days.

Princess is offering a further two other cruises that will sail around the southern Carribean for a longer duration at the start and end of the season.

These include a Caribbean Princess voyage from Fort Lauderdale to Port Carnival, stopping at Princess Cays, Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire, San Juan, Amber Cove, Grand Turk, and Nassau in April 2026 for 13 days.

The Regal Princess will be going on a 14-day trip from Fort Lauderdale to New York , stopping at Curaçao, Aruba, Grenada, Barbados, Dominica, St. Maarten, and San Juan in September 2026.

Caribbean vs. Bahamas cruises: Which itinerary will I like better?

Erica Silverstein

You're looking for warm weather, gorgeous beaches, water sports and guaranteed R&R on your next cruise. Should you book a cruise to the Caribbean or the Bahamas ? With so many islands on a vast number of itineraries, the vacation choices can get overwhelming – the exact opposite of the therapeutic cruise you're hoping to take.

Bottom line: You can't go wrong with any island cruise, but you can pick the itinerary that will suit your travel style and preferences best. Here, we'll compare Bahamas and Caribbean cruises to give you a cheat sheet for picking the perfect cruise for you.

Caribbean vs. Bahamas cruise itineraries

Both Bahamas and Caribbean cruise itineraries come in short and long varieties. The main difference when it comes to Caribbean versus Bahamas sailings is that Bahamas cruises visit multiple islands within one country, whereas Caribbean cruises include a mix of island and Central American mainland ports across several countries.

Caribbean itineraries are broken down into Western, Eastern and Southern Caribbean routes. Western Caribbean cruises depart from southern U.S. ports from Galveston, Texas, to Florida and either go to Mexico and Central America or to the islands west of Cuba and Haiti. Short cruises tend to hit one or two ports in Mexico; weeklong cruises visit a mix of island and mainland destinations.

Eastern Caribbean cruises depart mainly from Florida or Caribbean destinations like San Juan or St. Thomas. These sailings include the islands east of Cuba and Haiti, such as the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, St. Martin/Maarten, and Puerto Rico. Sailings labeled Eastern Caribbean that depart from northeast ports are either longer than a week or mainly Bahamas cruises that include a visit to one Caribbean port, such as the Dominican Republic or Grand Turk.

You won't find short cruises to the Southern Caribbean, so if you want to cruise to places like Aruba or St. Lucia, you'll need at least a week. These sailings mostly depart from Florida or Caribbean islands. If you're looking for luxury, the small-ship and high-end lines focus their attention in this area, as well as on the smaller Eastern Caribbean islands. Southern Caribbean sailings tend to be more port-intensive, with fewer sea days of all the Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries.

Bahamas cruises depart from the broadest range of home ports, from Galveston on the Gulf Coast to Florida and Northeast ports like Baltimore and Bayonne, New Jersey (one of several ports in the New York City area). You'll find many short sailings to these islands since they're located close to Florida. (Freeport, Bahamas, is closer to Miami than Key West is.) Weeklong sailings can be Bahamas-only or include ports in Florida or close-in Caribbean destinations like Grand Turk.

RELATED: Bahamas vs. Bermuda cruise itineraries

To make matters more confusing, cruise lines will often mix destinations from the different tropical regions on one itinerary. A Southern Caribbean cruise may include ports in the Eastern Caribbean, and a Western Caribbean sailing might stop at a cruise line's private island in the Bahamas.

Ignore the sailing's name and look at the ports of call to figure out where you're actually going.

Caribbean vs. Bahamas ports of call

The main Bahamian ports are Nassau on New Providence Island (the country's capital) and Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. Some ships have recently started calling on Bimini as well. Beaches and water sports are the main activities. Most cruise line private islands – Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay , Carnival Corp.'s Half Moon Cay, Disney Cruise Line's Castaway Cay, Princess Cruises ' Princess Cays and Norwegian Cruise Line's Great Stirrup Cay – are in the Bahamas and make for a great beach day.

cruise ship excursions san juan puerto rico

Western Caribbean cruise ports include several ports in Jamaica and Mexico, as well as Grand Cayman, Roatan (Honduras) and Belize City. If you want to explore the ruins of ancient Mayan cities, you'll want to choose an itinerary that visits Mexico and/or Belize.

Big-ship cruise lines call at the bigger Eastern Caribbean ports, such as San Juan (Puerto Rico), Grand Turk, the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas and St. Maarten/Martin. Smaller and more upscale ships will head for the more intimate Virgin Islands, such as St. John, Tortola, Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda. Most of these islands are beach and water sport destinations, though St. Thomas and St. Martin have a reputation for shopping. San Juan mixes old-city charm with modern restaurants and boutiques.

The Southern Caribbean encompasses a wide range of ports, from ritzy St. Barth's to volcanic St. Lucia, rugged Dominica, French Martinique and British Barbados. Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire are so far south that they're out of the main hurricane belt and your fun in the sun will be less likely to be disrupted by seasonal storms.

Caribbean vs. Bahamas beaches and water sports

Divers, snorkelers, kayakers, paddleboarders and straight-up beach bums will find plenty of water-based fun in both the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

cruise ship excursions san juan puerto rico

In every destination, you'll find a swimming beach within driving, if not walking, distance from the cruise port. Many have coral reefs offshore to thrill snorkelers and divers; the waters of the Caribbean are littered with shipwrecks that will make your underwater adventure extra scenic.

If you're a novice snorkeler or dedicated sunbather, you'll be pleased with any Bahamas or Caribbean itinerary you choose. Experienced divers or water sports enthusiasts should research the ports that offer particular water sports experiences, such as windsurfing or advanced-level wreck diving.

Caribbean vs. Bahamas shore excursions and activities

With more ports and itinerary options, it's not surprising that you have more choices of activities in the Caribbean versus the Bahamas.

If you're into shopping, Nassau's Bay Street offers the gamut of retail outlets selling everything from diamonds and high-end brands to rum cake, T-shirts and items woven from straw. The other Bahamian ports aren't shopping destinations for much beyond souvenirs. In the Caribbean, St. Barth's is the place for swanky boutiques; French Martinique and St. Martin sell goods from France. St. Thomas is known for its duty-free shopping within easy reach of the port, and San Juan is full of art galleries and boutiques.

Stopping in Belize City or the Mexican ports of Cozumel and Costa Maya is a must for history buffs who want to visit the ruins of ancient Mayan cities. If you prefer forts and military history, look for Caribbean cruises that stop in San Juan, Dominica or Grenada. Bahamas visitors can tour Fort Charlotte in Nassau.

St. Lucia, Dominica, St. John and Puerto Rico are tops for hikers. Bonaire has many trails for cyclists; in the Bahamas, private islands Half Moon Cay and Castaway Cay offer bike paths, as well. If you're looking for river-based activities, you can go cave tubing in Belize and river tubing in Jamaica.

cruise ship excursions san juan puerto rico

Wildlife lovers will have more options in the Caribbean than the Bahamas. Book a tour to Gumbalimba Park in Roatan or Lamanai in Belize to see monkeys and macaws, or Puerto Rico's El Yunque Rainforest to search for coqui (tree frogs). In the Bahamas, your best bet is the zoo at the Ardastra Gardens in Nassau.

You'll find zip line adventures, 4x4 tours and culinary experiences throughout the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Bottom Line

When comparing the Caribbean and the Bahamas for your next cruise, you will be happy with either choice for a relaxing beach vacation. If you have specific travel goals, such as wildlife viewing or visiting historic sites, the Caribbean will offer the widest variety of activities, but you'll still need to pick the right ports.

Some travelers will find that departure port and cruise length are the most important considerations; if you need a drive-to home port or a four-night sailing, you won't have the same variety of itinerary choices as cruisers who can take a weeklong vacation and fly to their ship.
