St Thomas Island USVI cruise port

Region Bahamas - Caribbean - Bermuda

Local Time 2024-09-11 06:48

Port St Thomas Island USVI cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from St Thomas Island USVI, Charlotte Amalie, US Virgin Islands. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Saint Thomas is one of the US Virgin Islands (USVI) in the Caribbean. Together with Saint John and Water Island, it forms a county and district of the USVI (unincorporated USA territory). St Thomas island's population is around 52,000, or about 49% of USVI's total.

On the island is Charlotte Amalie - the USVI's capital city and principal port (locode VISTT).

On September 20, 2023, USVI Port Authority's Board of Governors approved the CCRC/Capital Cost Recovery Charge of (US$5 per cruise passenger (implemented on January 1, 2024) to improve local port facilities. The fee is only for Royal Caribbean Group/RCG-owned ships from RCG's subsidiaries RCI-Royal Caribbean International , Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises . The CCRC is for all RCG passengers whose ships dock at USVI's main cruise ports - Charlotte Amalie (Austin Monsanto Marine Terminal) and Frederiksted/St Croix Island (at Ann E. Abramson Marine Terminal).

The USVI is the only place under USA jurisdiction where the road rule is to drive on the left. It was inherited from what was then-current Danish practice at the time of American acquisition in 1917. Because Saint Thomas is a United States territory, most cars are imported from the mainland USA and therefore the steering column is placed on the left side of the vehicles.

St Thomas has many regular taxis and open-air, covered trucks named "safaris" with bench seats which usually operate only between high-traffic points: cruise-ship terminals at Crown Bay and Havensight and downtown Charlotte Amalie. However, most cruise ships to St Thomas USVI dock at Port Charlotte Amalie.

All USVI beaches (including on St Thomas) are public and free of charge (no entry fees required). The most popular among tourists are Lindquist Beach and Emerald Beach.

WHATSINPORT.COM: YOUR CRUISE GUIDE TO 1200 PORTS OF CALL

Interactive world cruise map, home | cruise ships | port expenses | hints and tips, saint thomas us virgin islands cruise port guide.

During particularly busy times (i.e. January through March), your ship will dock at Havensight also called West India Company Dock, the primary dock for cruise ships, or Crown Bay , which opened a new port facility in early 2007. If more than six ships call on St. Thomas in one day, your ship could be anchored in the harbor; the tenders will drop you in the heart of Charlotte Amalie.

Havensight: Right at the dock at Havensight is, in essence, a mini-downtown. There are more than 50 shops, many of which are outposts of Charlotte Amalie's better-known boutiques. The dock is 15 to 20 minutes walk from town. Plenty of taxis available.

Also within the expansive Havensight shopping area is Dockside Books, the island's only bookstore; Gourmet Gallery, with a terrific selection of wine and Caribbean beer; a post office;

Across the main drag running outside Havensight's facility are convenience stores, coffee shops and Cafes which offer free WiFi for customers. New -- and within walking distance from the Havensight pier -- is the Yacht Haven Grande Marina; when you exit your ship, turn left and follow the dock around the harbor. It's the first genuinely upscale shopping and dining area to open in St. Thomas in years.

Beyond the immediate facility, the best bargains on duty-free liquor can be found at K-Mart.

Crown Bay: It is quite difficult to (40 min) walk from Crown Bay to downtown. However, taxis can usually be found waiting in a designated area. Taxis are shared, about $5 per person.

Sightseeing:

Many visitors explore Charlotte Amalie to shop rather than to look at history. The proximity of the historic buildings to the stores however, makes it easy to enjoy both. To really embrace the historical sights you must look beyond the shops, vendors and people. Try to picture the past; complete with forts, plantations, warehouses and pirates, among the many other images of St. Thomas ' History. Exploring Charlotte Amalie is a rewarding experience and easily done on foot (wear comfortable shoes).

Take a ride on The Skyride to Paradise Point and enjoy a breathtaking view of St. Thomas Harbor. Then travel to Mountain Top, the highest point on St. Thomas, and see spectacular views of Magens Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Check out Coral World Marine Park , where you can touch sea stars at the touch pool or explore the mystery of life in a mangrove lagoon off the Coastal Trail.

Sit back and enjoy a relaxing half-day sail to Buck Island aboard a large sailing yacht, then snorkel in Turtle Cove.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Getting around any of the Virgin Islands is fairly easy. All of the islands have bus service and/or a regulated taxi service. You can "bargain" for most things on the islands, but the taxi and bus rates are regulated. Taxi rates are charged per person one way and are expensive.

Use the safari dollar buses. Wait for one at a bus stop. Pay the driver when you exit $1 for short distances and $2 for longer distances.

Nearby Places:

If you want a real treat for a beach then walk over to Crown Bay Marina right beside the cruise ship dock and take the ferry over to Water Island. This is a short ferry ride five to ten minutes. Honeymoon beach is a short walk from the ferry dock on Water Island. It rivals any beach on the islands and won't be crowed or over run with other cruisers.

St. John: To get there, regardless of where you dock, hop in a taxi and head to the Red Hook Ferry dock. The ferry to Cruz Bay St. John leaves every hour on the hour. If you make the 9:00 AM ferry, you'll beat the crowds and have more time on the island. It's only about a 25-30 minute ferry ride. When you get off the ferry there are bunches of taxis waiting to take you to the beach or on an island tour or both. It's about $8 per person from the dock to Trunk Bay with a couple of wonderful scenic overlooks on the way.

Heading back, it is recommended you take a ferry that leaves Cruz Bay no later than 3 hours prior to your ships departure. There are always plenty of cabs at Red Hook waiting to take passengers back to ships, too.

Magens Bay features a well-protected white sand beach stretching for nearly three quarters of a mile. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island, as well as a gathering place for locals.

Shopping and Food

St. Thomas is the bargain-shopping bazaar of the Caribbean. There are over 400 shops along the Main Street area in Charlotte Amalie and some 50 more in Havensight Mall. Great bargains are found on precious gemstones, and on fine jewelry and watches. Cameras, electronic goods, and designer clothing are also available, as are a selection of island rums and liquors, with great bargains on your favorite spirits.

Custom allows $1200 worth of goods per person duty-free. And there's no sales tax!

Communication:

English is the official language but you may also find Spanish being spoken.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

Shopping hours Mon-Sat 0900-1700. When cruise ships are in port, some larger shops open on Sunday.

Photo by IQCruising of Havensight Dock in St Thomas (USVI) cruise port

Practical guide to the Havensight Dock for cruises to St Thomas: what's in the cruise terminal, all services and amenities, tourist info, duty-free shops, taxi fares, car rental, and more.

By: Editor-in-Chief Update: June 1, 2023

The Havensight Dock is the closest docking spot to Charlotte Amalie and within walking distance to the main town of St Thomas. The Havensight Terminal is a vast open-air mall with all services and amenities cruisers may need, and a large area with duty-free shops.

Close to the long pier of the Havensight Dock, cruise passengers will find two exciting highlights of St Thomas: the Butterfly Farm (temporarily closed) and the famous Skyride to Paradise Point with stunning views of St Thomas.

Docking, Piers and Shopping Mall

There are three docking spots in the Havensight Cruise Ship Dock on its 3/4 of a mile (1 km) long pier. Next to each docking spot, there is an exit gate to a large area - the Havensight Mall - where cruise ship passengers will find almost all amenities.

Cruise Tip: cruisers must have both the ship card and one photo ID to re-enter the pier.

For those on shore excursions booked onboard, there will be ship staff guiding the cruise traveler to the tour buses. If you booked on-line with independent tour operators, the local guides will be waiting outside the exit gates.

Havensight Mall Entrance

As you walk out of any of the four exit gates there will be taxis offering transportation to all main attractions, beaches, a simple ride to Charlotte Amalie or even a sightseeing tour of the Island. Taxis are the best way to travel around in St Thomas. More about taxis below .

Tourist Information

Close to both Gate 1 and Gate 2 there is a large and excellent Tourist Information office where you can pick up maps, brochures, printed guides to St Thomas and the US Virgin Islands. This is the ideal place to go if you wish to explore the Island on your own or discover hidden gems of St Thomas.

Shopping in Havensight

St Thomas is famous for being a shopper's paradise. And in the Havensight Mall, the cruise passenger will find a number of one-story buildings with some of the major shops in St Thomas like Diamonds International, Colombian Emeralds, or Boolchand's amongst other well-known shops in the Caribbean.

Most cruise travelers interested in duty-free jewelry, watches, and electronics do travel to Charlotte Amalie where the top shops are located. But the shops in Havensight shouldn't be missed. To learn more about these shops read our shopping guide to the Havensight Mall.

Close by, the Yacht Haven Marina use to have the best and high-end shops in St Thomas, like Bulgari, Coach, Gucci or Salvatore Ferragamo. Sadly, all these shops have closed after the Hurricane Season in 2017.

Convenience Stores in Havensight

If all you are looking for is liquor, spirits, fragrances, tobacco, gifts or souvenirs the cruise ship passenger doesn't really need to go all the way to Charlotte Amalie for a shopping spree. There are many shops carrying this type of merchandise in the Havensight Mall. In reality, it is easier to find these type of convenience stores in the Havensight Mall than in Charlotte Amalie.

Amenities, Services and Restaurants

As mentioned before, the Havensight Dock is very well serviced. Keep in mind that St Thomas legal tender is the US Dollar and that if you need cash there are Banks with ATMs.

Photo of Bank with ATM in the Havensight Dock, St. Thomas

Bank with ATM in Havensight

The Post Office (USPS) is very close to the piers and there are a few quite nice restaurants. Senor Frogs and the Delly Deck are within the Mall, and just outside you will find Mojos, Hooters, the Barefoot Buddha and the Shipwreck Tavern.

Renting a car may be a good way to enjoy and exploration of St Thomas on your own. Right in front of the pier the cruise traveler will see the Budget Car Rental sign and as you walk out of the Havensight Mall, is impossible to miss Avis.

How to get Charlotte Amalie: on foot or by taxi

Charlotte Amalie is only 1 mile away from the Havensight Dock and can be an easy walk. The most pleasant way to walk downtown is through the Yacht Haven Marina. The marina used to be an upscale shopping and dining area designed for the exclusive clientele of the luxurious yachts visiting St Thomas.

The Yacht Haven Marina was severely hit during the 2017 Hurricane Season. All the high-end shops have closed, but the restaurants are back (some have changed hands), and the grounds are back into their former glory. Walking through the Yacht Haven Marina is still the most pleasant to get to Charlotte Amalie.

Taxi Fares from Havensight Dock

Taxi fares are clearly displayed and are official so you don't really need to worry about getting a good deal and it isn't worth to haggle.

Photo of Taxi Dispatch in the Havensight Dock, St. Thomas

Taxi Dispatch in Havensight

Cruise Tip: as the taxi lines close to the gates can get very full, if you walk to the exit of the mall you may find better service in that Taxi Dispatching area. Taxis in St Thomas are shared and you will need to wait for other cruise companions but it usually doesn't take longer than a few minutes.

Taxi Fares from Havensight Dock *

* Fares are person sharing a Taxi. Taxi fares may have been updated since our visit in May 2022. Prices from Crown Bay and Charlotte Amalie are very similar.

Attractions close to the Havensight dock

Within walking distance of the Havensight Dock, there are two top attractions of St Thomas - the Butterfly Farm, which is under restoration works, and the Skyride to Paradise Point. Both sites can easily be enjoyed after or before a half-day tour of the Island.

Paradise Point

The Skyride to Paradise Point is outside the Havensight Mall. Turn left, once outside the exit in the direction of Charlotte Amalie. After no more than a 5-minute walk, the colorful Skyride will be on your right. The views from Paradise Point are spectacular and a photo-op not to be missed.

Photo of Paradise Point close to the Havensight Dock in St Thomas

Closed Attractions within Walking Distance

The Butterfly Farm is on the grounds of the Havensight Mall, on the right end of the pier, behind Senor Frogs . Both were devastated during the 2017 Hurricane season .

Photo of Butterfly Farm in the Havensight Dock, St. Thomas

Butterfly Farm in Havensight

The Butterfly Farm used to be a great place for those traveling with children and it is advisable to check if and when it reopens. Senor Frogs wasn't open in March 2020 when IQCruising last visited the Havensight Dock. And it doesn't look like it will be opening any time soon.

If you’re wondering about the best things to do in St. Thomas , USVI , you’re not alone. St. Thomas, nestled between the Atlantic and Caribbean Sea, is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the entire Caribbean.

In this post, we share our favorite things to do in St. Thomas in only one day.

Best Things to Do in St. Thomas in One Day

Deciding what things to do in St. Thomas with only one day in port can be a bit overwhelming. There are so many interesting and exciting activities to pick and choose.

From relaxing on the white sugar-sand beach at Magens Bay, duty-free shopping (some of the best prices in the Caribbean) in Charlotte Amalie, to a white-knuckle zip-line or a helicopter adventure, there’s a ton of options to choose for your day in St. Thomas.

Make sure to pack your sunscreen, sun hat, maybe a daypack and get ready for a visit that includes relaxation, adventure, shopping and a bit of pirate lore.

St. Thomas and the Pirates

Understanding the history of St. Thomas and the surrounding islands will give you better insight into what’s offered today.

Piracy and privateering were happening here in the 1500s, when Spain was running shiploads of gold and silver looted from the Aztecs and Mayans.

Among the most famous and feared pirates in the Virgin Islands included Anne Bonny, Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, and Bluebeard.

Throughout much of this time, the U.S. kept its eye on the Virgin Islands. In 1917, the United States purchased St.Thomas, St. John and St. Croix from Denmark.

Where Do Cruise Ships Dock in St. Thomas?

It’s important for planning your day to know in advance where your ship will dock in St. Thomas.

The main docking piers for St. Thomas are on the south side of the island;  Havensight Cruise Pier and the adjacent shopping mecca, Havensight Mall or Crown Bay, located just west of Charlotte Amalie.

Cruise lines that dock at Havensight include Carnival, Celebrity, Norwegian and most Royal Caribbean ships except for their Oasis class ships .

Ships docking at Crown Bay are usually those with a deeper draft like Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class ships, Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 and several Holland America and Princess ships.

St. Thomas cruise port at Havensight.

If Havensight Pier is too busy, your ship may end up docking in Crown Point Marina, despite being a smaller ship.

On busy port days, some cruise ship will have to drop anchor just offshore and guests will ride a tender (lifeboat) into port.

This procedure usually goes fairly smooth and your ship may even distribute tender tickets to time your departure and avoid overcrowding at peak times.

Because Havensight is such a large pier, be prepared for crowds. This is especially important if you travel during peak cruise season or the winter holidays.

Transportation into Town

There are tons of taxis to hitch a ride between the main Havensight Mall area and Charlotte Amalie. It’s also walkable, though not in the heat of summer.

It’s only a 15-minute ride between the two spots, and your taxi ride will cost about $15 each way. Taxis can be found outside of the dock gates.

Trolleys also run between the industrial port (Crown Point Marina) and Charlotte Amelie. Usually there’s a small fee. On occasion, luxury cruise lines will cover the cost.

Consider renting a car for the day if you want to go sightseeing on your own. There are several car rental agencies on the island and will pick up at the port. Budget has a car rental location at Havensight Cruise Pier.

What to Do in St. Thomas

1. spend the day at beautiful magens bay.

For many visitors, a day at Magens Bay Beach is the best thing to do in St. Thomas.

Beautiful Magens Bay is probably at the top of nearly everyone’s list of the best things to do in St. Thomas. Or at least close to the top of the list.

Whether you want to dive into crystal-clear waters or take tropical Facebook photos, you’re in for a treat at Magens Bay. This beach is an escape like no other with the soft sand and gleaming turquoise water.

Magen’s Bay is located on the north side of the island. There’s a small fee to visit the beach. Children under 12 are free, but it’s reported to be $5 per adult. Your cruise ship is sure to offer half- or full-day shore excursions .

If your stomach starts to growl, head to Magens Bay Beach Bar and Café . Here you’ll find everything from grilled sandwiches to pizza plus pre-made salads and sandwiches.

You’ll quickly forget about your worries of paying to be on the beach once you set eyes on the area. Visitors have reported their visit to Magens Bay is worth every penny and more.

Many local private companies offer boat tours of the area. Check with your cruise line about their shore excursions to Magens Bay, too.

2. Stop by Blackbeard’s Castle

Unfortunately, due to Hurricane Irma, this attraction is currently closed off from the public. But even if you can’t go inside, see if you can still get a peek at the outside.

Serving as one of the most popular St. Thomas tourist attractions, this castle takes you deep into a pirate-packed past.

You’ll find this landmark in the city of Charlotte Amalie at the highest point of Government Hill. It’s hard to miss due to its high vantage point and size. Almost all motorcoach tours of Charlotte Amalie stop for a photo op at Blackbeard’s Castle.

Blackbeard, formally known as Edward Teach, was rumored to have used the castle as a lookout point for his pirate plots.

3. Explore Coral World Ocean Park

St. Thomas sightseeing is a great way to get a feel for the island, but you can cool off by diving deep into the waters of Coral World Ocean Park, located on the east side of the island by Coki Beach.

Guests can purchase general admission tickets to explore the five acres of land. There are extra excursions available to purchase. These extra excursions include dolphin kayak tours, a shark encounter, a sea trek adventure , and a snuba adventure.

Undersea observatory tower

If you aren’t interested in purchasing additional opportunities, you’ll still have plenty to do with the sea animal touch pools, stingray lagoon, and the underwater observatory tower.

Are you with your kids and/or grandkids? This park offers educational opportunities that teach visitors more about local sea creatures and underwater habitats.

4. Stroll Downtown Charlotte Amalie

View of Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas harbor.

Stroll through the island’s capital city on the south side of the island, and lose yourself wandering through the cobblestone alleyways and take note of the interesting architecture.

Luckily, the city’s historical landmarks aren’t too far of a walk from each other. Make sure to check out the St. Thomas synagogue with its sand floor, try to climb the steep 99 Steps, and the Three Queens statue.

If you become hungry, there’s no shortage of good food in the city. Check out the Stone House Cafe, Amalie Cafe, Rum Island Pub, and Virgilio’s.

Downtown Charlotte Amalie is the place to shop. Your cruise ship will of course offer their “guaranteed” shopping guide. And some of the offers are good. Whether you want to buy liquor or jewelry or simple souvenirs, you’ll find everything you need in the shops along these narrow alleyways.

5. Relax at Sapphire Beach

Located on the east side of the island, Sapphire beach is a beautiful escape from the busier hubs of the island.

Head over the beach for a clear view of St. John, and dive deep into the waters for a snorkeling adventure you’ll never forget. You’ll also notice quite a few windsurfers during your visit.

Want to go kayaking? Pop by the watersports booth to rent a kayak or snorkeling gear. Sapphire beach is also the best spot on the island to do a parasailing experience.

If you don’t feel like getting wet, sit on the rocky ledge and just dip your toes in the water.

6. See the Sea with Caribbean Buzz Helicopters

Do you want to see St. Thomas from above? Schedule a ride with Caribbean Buzz Helicopters, located on the west side of Charlotte Amalie.

One of Caribbean Buzz Helicopters at the landing spot.

This company specializes in helicopter tours of the islands and even provides private airport transfers. Talk about showing up in style.

How daring are you? Choose a doors-off option to feel the cool ocean air blow past as you explore the islands from the sky. Just imagine your family’s reaction to the pictures you’ll be able to take.

If your cruise is making a stop during a full moon, check out their Full Moon tour. Visitors have the chance to view the islands in the romantic moonlight.

7. Try the Tree Limin’ Extreme Zipline

If you’re an adrenaline junkie, one of the best things to do in St. Thomas for you could a ride on the famous St. Thomas zipline . Anyone between the ages of 5-95 years can experience the thrill of a zipline ride!

Tree Limin’ Extreme Zipline starts high up in St. Peter Mountain. You’ll catch amazing views of Magens Bay on your way down. Soak it all up as you soar through what looks like a National Geographic ad.

Tree Limin extreme zipline in St. Thomas with people on the top platform.

Do you need a break after your zipline experience? Relax at the da Lime in da Coconut bar that features flavors of Caribbean rum you’ve probably never tried.

8. Visit Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden

If you’re someone who enjoys slower moments at each cruise stop, then one of the best things to do in St. Thomas is to make your way to a beautiful botanical garden just south of Magens Bay.

At the Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden , you’ll discover dozens upon dozens of tropical plants and colorful blooming flowers.

A spray of orchids at Phantsea Tropical Botanical Garden.

The gardens are educational for those interested in plants and flowers such as orchids, succulents, and palms. Garden staff also enjoy teaching others about the importance of conservation.

View of St. Thomas harbor from the skyride at the top of paradise point.

Once you reach the top, check out the observation deck overlooking the city and shore. The view is incredible. Feeling hungry or thirsty?

Paradise Point offers a delicious restaurant and a highly rated bar famous for their Bailey’s Bushwacker or bananas daiquiris.

10. Take a St . Thomas Food Tour

One of the best things to do in St. Thomas is to take a food tour especially if there are conch fritters.

Incorporate a walking tour with a taste of the local culinary and cultural scene. There are several food tour operators in St. Thomas.

Your cruise ship will most likely offer an excursion. The advantage of booking that type of tour with your ship is that the tour will begin and end at the port, but it will likely be quite a bit more expensive and not as relaxed.

Some food tours have a designated meeting point in Charlotte Amalie. This means you’ll have to find your own way to the meeting point and back to the ship.

If you decide to take a food tour on your own, be sure to leave plenty of time to get back to your ship after the food tour. The short 15 minute drive can take over 30 minutes where there are many ships docked at Havensight.

11. Grab a Bite to Eat at Glady’s Cafe

Not only will you walk away with memories, but you’ll walk away with a new friend on the island!

14. Pirate Treasure Museum

To check out one of the best scenic overlooks, visit Drake’s Seat on Mullbay Road, south of Magens Bay. This lookout area is one of the must-see St. Thomas tourist attractions offering views you can’t find anywhere else.

As you sit on the bench, travel back in time in your mind. It’s said that Sir Francis Drake used to sit on the bench to use as a vantage point.

No one knows if he used the bench to watch over his own ships or if he plotted to invade the others as he sat. The mystery is part of the fun.

17. Visit the St. Thomas Synagogue

The oldest synagogue in continuous use in the U.S., and it is also the second oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere.
