What’s the Best Time to Visit Johannesburg?

Johannesburg is known for its mild climate temperature-wise, and therefore you can visit it year-round. However, to avoid the rainier times of the year, April through October are ideal. This is their fall, winter, and spring months where temperatures are a little cooler with less rain. However, most travelers visiting Johannesburg are pairing their trip with a safari and/or Cape Town , in which visiting in the late spring/early summer months of September-November are ideal.

A Few Facts About Johannesburg

Johannesburg, also known as the city of gold , was established during the gold rush in South Africa in 1886. It has been remade four times over the years from a tented camp, to a shantytown made of tin, to only a handful of Edwardian brick buildings, and now to the megacity of skyscrapers that it is today. Johannesburg also houses the Cradle of Humankind, where 40% of the world’s human fossils can be found. Johannesburg is home to several townships, most notably Soweto, or “South Western Townships,” where Nelson Mandela lived. South Africa also hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

One Day in Johannesburg Itinerary

Follow this guide and make the most of your trip even if you’re short on time. These are the top sights and things to do during your one day in Johannesburg.

Take a Guided Tour of Soweto

The best thing you can do while visiting Johannesburg is to check out Soweto . Soweto is home to two million people and the largest black urban settlement in Africa. It is also home to so much culture and life that a true picture of Johannesburg isn’t complete without a visit. This is where Nelson Mandela lived, where the 1976 Soweto student uprising took place, and overall, it was a political center during the Apartheid. As with many townships in South Africa, though, it is wise to go with a local guide. Ilios Travel is a great company to go with for local guides.

Soweto

Upon passing the colorfully painted Orlando Towers and the FNB Stadium shaped like an African pot, you’ll start to feel the pride and excitement that buzzes around this area. You’ll want to start with the footbridge of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, where you will see a panoramic view of Soweto.

Soweto 2

Then, you will dive into the history of Soweto starting with the Hector Pieterson Memorial in Orlando West, built in memoriam to those who passed away during the tragic student uprising during the Apartheid on June 16, 1976. There is a museum next to it where you can learn more about the events leading up to the uprising, most notably the government forcing students to be instructed in Afrikaans, a language many students did not know or understand.

Hector Pieterson Memorial

Next, you will continue to drive through the neighborhood of Orlando West, past homes ranging from tin to upscale. You will notice these houses show the vast discrepancy of rich and poor. It is very eye opening, yet you still see smiles and happiness exuding from both sides. Perhaps a lesson can be learned in finding happiness no matter the circumstances?

Orlando Towers

Don’t miss the Nelson Mandela Museum

After the short drive, you will continue to Nelson Mandela’s home, which is now called the Nelson Mandela Museum . Small and humble, the home is full of slices of history of his imprisonment, release, and presidency. There are photos of him with family, dignitaries, and more. To get a good glimpse into his life and family, this house is a great site to see. Also in the neighborhood, you will drive past Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s house and the Sisulu residences.

Visit the Apartheid Museum

The Apartheid Museum is a must-visit during your time in Johannesburg. You could either add this onto your tour of Soweto or go on your own afterwards. This museum shows the eye-opening effects of segregation, with each person receiving a card indicating whether they are white or non-white upon entry. This determines which entrance you may enter. You’ll only be separated for a short while, but the museum shows many aspects of the Apartheid era and the suffering that occurred. It also shows how they are moving forward into the future in South Africa.

Apartheid Museum

The most moving part was the outside display of glass with life-size photos of various people looking ahead. “South Africa is for everyone” as they look to the future.

Downtown Sandton and Nelson Mandela Square

If you’re still with the guide, ask them if they have time to drive to downtown Johannesburg. You will see the bustling cityscape, stopping at Nelson Mandela Square. This square features a statue in memoriam to their late president, and it also is a huge dining and retail center.

Nelson Mandela Square

Dinner at Melrose Arch

After a long day of learning about the history of South Africa and the Apartheid, it is time to see the current-day Johannesburg. Melrose Arch is a large shopping and residential center that is very popular with the locals. Explore the cafés, go shopping, and grab dinner at one of the many delicious restaurants. It is a great excuse to sample some South African wine as well at many of these establishments. Try the Chenin Blanc or Pinotage and enjoy the ending to your day in Johannesburg.

Day trips from Johannesburg

You’re in Africa, so it’s only natural that you want to see as much as possible. Fortunately, day trips from Johannesburg offer plenty of excellent destinations, and you won’t be disappointed, no matter which one you choose. Here are a few suggestions.

Pilanesberg National Park

A trip to Pilanesberg National Park is everything you’ve ever dreamed of when it comes to visiting Africa. The incredible photo safari tour you take there will bring you eye to eye with this continent’s big five: lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards and Cape buffalo. You can even get some serious photo equipment at the park! Come here to experience the true meaning of African safari.

The Cradle of Humankind

The Cradle of Humankind is a huge area relatively close to Johannesburg and therefore a great choice for a day trip. See where the incredible journey of the human race, of all of us, started and explore the cave in which fossils of early humanoids were found. This UNESCO World Heritage Site also has a superb exhibition, so you can truly learn a whole lot in just one day. Visit this place to see the links that bind us all.

Just over 50 kilometers away, Pretoria is definitely a city worth seeing. Visit the nearby Cullinan mines where some of the world’s most exquisite diamonds are mined. Hazel Food Market is something every foodie must visit with treats from all over the world, but the impressive Voortrekker Monument is a sight to behold, too. With many other sights and a beautiful  botanical garden to explore, Pretoria is the perfect choice if you want to see another South African city.

Ann van Dyk Cheetah Center

Yep, cheetahs. The fastest land animals in the world. Meet these incredible creatures up close in the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Center on the outskirts of Pretoria. This is a full-fledged safari we’re talking about, so you will be taken on a spectacular ride through the reserve and see many other animals, as well. Cheetahs are the stars of the show, though.

Kruger National Park

Be warned, Kruger National Park is not that close. It’s about a four hours’ drive, so if you’re planning this for your day trip from Johannesburg, plan carefully. That being said, the trip will be well worth it. An incredible array of all kinds of animals await you here, and you will witness Africa at its most beautiful. You can also stop for a meal, which will certainly be one of the most unique lunches you ever have in your life. If you have the time and the energy, go for it!

Extra Tips for Visiting Johannesburg

  • Be careful if wandering around, as Johannesburg does have a higher crime rate than most cities. Be aware of your surroundings, don’t walk around at night, and don’t wear flashy clothes and jewelry. Most crime happens in townships, which is why going with a local guide is a smart idea versus on your own.
  • Ubers are readily available throughout the city, just be sure to check that the license plate matches the app.
  • “Hayibo!” means “Wow!”
  • “Howzit?” means “How is it going?” or “How are you?”
  • “Ag Man!” means “Oh man!”

PIN FOR LATER!

Enjoy your time in this less often visited city in South Africa! It truly is one of a kind and a great introduction into the heartbeat of the country.

Make sure you have everything you need

What to pack for your next trip.

Make your next trip as simple and as enjoyable as possible by packing smart. It’s amazing how much stress top travel items can save you, so choose carefully. Things like lightweight travel backpacks, for example, are ideal for short trips and allow you to move around with ease, and a passport holder will make sure you keep your documents safe at all times. Check our travel checklist guide for 2021 to make sure you haven’t missed anything, and travel to your next destination in style and with maximum comfort.

The 5 best Johannesburg day trips

Jun 20, 2019 • 5 min read

One colourful baloon moves skyward as four others are in various stages of inflation on the ground; the light is soft and golden due to sunrise

Gauteng , the landlocked South African province surrounding Johannesburg , has a rich archeological and geological history. This history has created a multitude of unusual tourist activities within an hour or two of Jo’burg – from fossil-filled caves to old diamond-mining towns to balloon safaris over the some of the oldest mountains in the world: here are five of the best Johannesburg day trips.

A couple of visitors walk beneath a flowing South African flag and towards a large grass-covered dome; above it all is a brilliant blue sky

The Cradle of Humankind

The only Unesco World Heritage Site in Gauteng province, the Cradle of Humankind is home to some of the oldest hominid fossils ever discovered. It’s just over an hour from downtown Johannesburg but the Cradle feels like a primordial landscape, with infinite grassy savannah interrupted only occasionally by modern buildings.

The Cradle occupies 470 sq km and is dotted with limestone caves, including the Sterkfontein Caves where Dr Robert Broom discovered 'Mrs Ples' – the 2.3 million year-old Australopithecus africanus fossil – in 1947. Sterkfontein is open for guided tours and has a great museum devoted to human evolution.

Glass spheres hang from the ceiling, each containing skulls or bones from ancient humanid species; people walk behind looking at other artefacts

Maropeng , the official visitors centre for the Cradle of Humankind, is a few kilometres from Sterkfontein. The massive, dome-shaped structure, shaped like an ancient burial mound and covered in grass, is a child-friendly museum that tells the story of humans on earth. Visitors can tour Maropeng and Sterkfontein together for a combined price of R190 (US$13).

After a long day of exploring human history, pop in to the luxurious Cradle Boutique Hotel for a glass of wine or cappuccino overlooking the ancient hills.

Hot-air balloon safaris

Floating silently over the earth in a hot-air balloon is awe inspiring, no matter where you are. But there’s something about floating over the rolling hills of the Magaliesberg – one of the world’s oldest mountain ranges – at sunrise, with mist rising up from the Magalies River and maybe even a glimpse of a zebra or giraffe in the distance. The whole scene makes Bill Harrop’s Original Balloon Safaris in Skeerpoort a truly unforgettable experience.

The tour requires participants to wake at an ungodly hour (especially in summer when the sun comes up early), as the balloons take off just before sunrise. But this magical activity is totally worth a bit of sleep deprivation. Lucky visitors will find themselves in a balloon with the dapper Bill Harrop himself, who wears a jaunty wool cap and cracks witty jokes in between blasting bursts of hot air up into the balloon.

The balloon trip includes a hearty champagne breakfast after the tour, and participants receive a certificate of achievement for braving the sky in a balloon.

Two steel cables descend from the top left of the image to the bottom right; below them is a rocky and forested canyon along with a single person zooming downward on the cables as part of the zipline canopy tour

Tour Magaliesberg's canopies by zipline

Ziplining has become a popular adventure activity throughout South Africa and the Magaliesberg mountain range is a great place to do it. The Magaliesberg Canopy Tour , hosted at the Sparkling Waters Hotel & Spa about 90 minutes from Johannesburg, takes participants on a series of ten crisscrossing 'zips'over a scenic gorge called Ysterhout Kloof. The longest line is 140m and the tour lasts an exhilarating 2½ hours.

Sailing over the gorge, with sandstone cliffs above and thick vegetation below, is as beautiful as it is exciting. Ziplining provides a great thrill without the abject terror of bungee jumping or skydiving. The canopy tour includes a light lunch.

Under a blue sky is a A-framed rock church of yellow-brown hues; atop the church is a rounded tower with the middle cut out to hold a bell

Explore the history of Cullinan

In 1898, Sir Thomas Cullinan discovered diamonds about 100km north of Jo’burg and went on to found the Premier Diamond Mine. The town that quickly sprung up around the mine was named after him, as was the 3100-karat that was discovered at the site a few years later by Frederick George Stanley Wells. The Cullinan Diamond – the largest diamond in the world – was gifted to the Queen of England and went on to become part of the British Crown Jewels.

Today, the diamond mine is still in operation and Cullinan is a charming little tourist town. The town boasts several historic homes and churches, a couple of museums, and visitors can even tour the diamond mine.

The historic buildings include McHardy House , which is the oldest house in town –  it was built for mine manager William McHardy and his family in 1903. Also worth a look is St George’s Anglican Church, which was designed by acclaimed architect Sir Herbert Baker in 1908. Cullinan also has several quirky antique shops and a couple of atmospheric pubs along the old railroad tracks. As Greek As It Gets , one of Gauteng’s best Greek restaurants, is just outside the diamond mine's gates.

Two black-and-white birds sitting in water, with their reflection clear; the heads and long, slender upturned beaks are black, as well as the outer portions of their wings, while the rest of their plumage is white

Go twitching at Marievale Bird Sanctuary

Virtually unknown to anyone outside the birding community, Marievale Bird Sanctuary is one of Gauteng’s best-kept secrets. An hour’s drive from Johannesburg near the town of Nigel, Marievale is part of a wetland created by the local mining industry in the 1930s. Since then Marievale has become home to more than 230 species of birds. The sanctuary is run by the Gauteng provincial government and admission to is free.

It’s best to arrive at Marievale as close to sunrise as possible, when the air is clear and the morning light is soft. Sitting inside one of the sanctuary’s many bird hides, the only sounds are swishing grass, birdsong and rippling water as birds leave the glassy wetland surface and take off into the air.

Marievale has a lovely picnic area so bring along some eggs and sausages and enjoy a breakfast barbecue after bird watching.

15 Best Day Trips from Johannesburg (Updated 2023)

Johannesburg is found in the northeast of South Africa and is home to the country’s main international airport. With a sprawling urban area that stretches for miles, it’s the most populated city in South Africa. Even so, it’s not one of the country’s three capital cities. Unusually for such a large city, once the extensive suburbs and townships end, there is nothing except open plains and beautiful countryside. Despite this, Johannesburg is often avoided by tourists visiting South Africa because of its reputation for crime.

But this is largely overstated, and rarely impacts visitors to the city. The reality is that Johannesburg is the cultural heart of modern South Africa. All in all, Jo’burg is the perfect base from which to explore the many national parks and game reserves found in the area. It’s also the ideal place to see the best of South Africa’s contemporary culture. Down the road is the historic city of Pretoria, where you can learn more about the divided history of this country. Not too much further away, Sun City offers amusement and water parks for those looking for a different kind of escape from Johannesburg. In other words, there are many great day trips to be done from Johannesburg, and these are the very best.

Below you’ll find my top picks for attractions easily reached from Johannesburg. Having traveled extensively across South Africa more than once, I know first-hand what’s worth your hard earned time, and what isn’t.

1. Kruger National Park

<yoastmark class=

Kruger National Park is perhaps South Africa’s most famous national park.

It’s also one of South Africa’s largest, covering an enormous area of almost 8000 square miles. Johannesburg acts as an ideal gateway for international travelers to South Africa looking to visit the park.

From Johannesburg, a multitude of companies offer day tours to the fringes of Kruger. Here you can get a taste for the wild nature of South Africa’s savannas and see the icons of African wildlife, including the Big Five game animals.

It can be tricky to see all five species (lions, elephants, rhinos, Cape buffaloes, and leopards) in a single day.

However, it’s not impossible with an experienced guide, and there are plenty of other animals to keep you open-mouthed, from giraffes to hyenas.

With such an expanse of wilderness to explore, you’re sure to find yourself wanting to return again and again. After all, no two days at Kruger National Park are ever the same.

Recommended tour : Kruger National Park 3-Day Safari

<yoastmark class=

Soweto is found on the outskirts of Johannesburg’s city centre. Although now considered part of the city itself, for a long time this area was very, very separate.

It makes for an incredibly interesting day trip, as Soweto was the largest township in South Africa during the dark days of Apartheid.

The name of the area means simply South Western Townships, and a tour here will give you a glimpse of the Johannesburg beyond its glittering central office blocks.

You can learn about the turbulent history of the township but also experience the vibrant lifestyles that are lived here. The modern symbol of Soweto, the muraled cooling towers of Orlando Power Station, are a sign of this.

A must for any visit to Soweto is the Apartheid Museum. It’s galleries are dedicated to detailing the horrors of South Africa’s policies of racial division. But there’s a lot more to see besides.

The Orlando area was home to Nelson Mandela before his imprisonment on Robben Island. Now a museum and national monument, the tiny red brick building where he lived still holds the bullet holes and burn marks caused by petrol bombs, alongside much of its original contents.

Tours also include time learning about the Soweto Uprising, an event that led to the deaths of several school children protesting against the use of Afrikaans in Soweto schools.

Together attractions make Soweto an intriguing place to visit, and one of the best day trips to make from Johannesburg.

Available tour : Johannesburg and Soweto Apartheid Full Day Tour

3. Sun City

Sun City, South Africa

After a heavy dose of history and politics in Soweto, you may be looking for something a little more light-hearted and relaxing when it comes to taking your next day trip from Johannesburg.

Sun City is essentially one big holiday resort. South Africa’s most famous getaway, it’s an excellent place to visit if you are looking for relaxation, fun, and amusement parks.

Think Las Vegas, and you’ve got Sun City pretty much sussed. You can find everything from spas and water parks, to bars and even a casino. In short, fun for all the family.

Kitsch it definitely is. Yet at the same time, Sun City has an allure like nowhere else in South Africa, and certainly nowhere within proximity to Johannesburg.

Sun City is a two-hour drive away from Johannesburg, meaning that while there are plenty of hotels tempting you to stay the night, it makes for a great day trip too.

What’s more, trips to Sun City are often combined with a tour of Pilanesberg National Park, my next pick.

Available tour : Pilanesberg Full-Day Shared Safari with Sun City Visit

4. Pilanesberg National Park

<yoastmark class=

Pilanesberg National Park is located right next to Sun City, but it’s an entirely different world to explore.

Being so close to Johannesburg, Pilanesberg makes for an excellent place to visit to experience the wild nature of South Africa without needing to spend days in the bushveld.

The park takes its name from an enormous mountain, formed from a now extinct volcano. But most people visit for the chance to see the huge variety of wildlife that lives within its boundaries.

You can spot all of the Big Five animals, as well as almost every species which calls South Africa home.

The volcanic landscape is simply breathtaking, especially around the Mankwe Dam area of the park.

To get a real overview of all the park’s magnificent landscapes, ascending to the skies in a hot air balloon is a fabulous idea.

5. Pretoria

<yoastmark class=

Pretoria is found just an hour to the north of Johannesburg’s city center and is one of South Africa’s three capital cities (alongside Cape Town and Bloemfontein).

As a result, it’s home to a host of administrative offices, many beautiful pieces of architecture in their own right.

There’s also a great deal of history, connected not only with the Afrikaaners who founded the city, but also the nomadic tribes who roamed the plains of the area before them.

To get a feel of what the city’s all about, a good place to start is the impressive Voortrekker Monument.

It’s a grand legacy built to commerorate the hardships faced by Afrikaaners forced to move north to escape British colonisation.

For a full lowdown of the history of this time, head to Pretoria Forts, built to protect against British advances.

Then visit the Union Buildings on Meintjieskop hill. The seat of the South African government, the buildings were designed by British architect Sir Herbert Baker, who was also partially responsible for New Delhi.

6. Magaliesberg

<yoastmark class=

Magaliesberg is a formidable mountain range found to the north of Johannesburg and an area that makes for a wild escape from the confines of the city. The scenery is absolutely beautiful.

It’s rugged, mountainous and full of wildlife, and there are plenty of opportunities to explore the nature, to hike to waterfalls, and to climb its peaks.

Alternatively, grab a ticket for the Hartbeesport Aerial Cableway, which will take you to the top of the Magaliesberg Mountains without any effort.

Elsewhere in the area you can find many farms and wildlife reserves, giving visitors the opportunity to explore local life in this secluded part of South Africa just a short hop from the country’s biggest city.

7. Rustenburg

Rustenburg, South Africa

Rustenburg is a city located two hours away from Johannesburg, and it’s found in beautiful surroundings in the foothills of the Magaliesberg Mountains.

Meaning ‘place of rest’ in Afrikaans, it’s a phrase which still perfectly describes the town.

It’s really the gateway to exploring the entire region, but the town itself offers visitors a look at Afrikaaner history in the area.

There is a great museum explaining the town’s importance, and there are many battlefields nearby which were the scene of fighting during the Anglo-Boer War.

8. Hartbeespoort

Hartbeespoort, South Africa

Also found in the foothills of the Magaliesburg Mountains is the town of Hartbeespoort.

This lakeside community is a charming place to visit and is the site of the Hartbeespoort Dam.

It’s an excellent place to wind down and to enjoy boating trips or cruises across the scenic lake.

That said, Hartbeespoort has also become a center for adrenaline sports.

White water rafting on the Crocodile River (no crocs present) is becoming increasingly popular, while divers have the unusual opportunity of delving into what was once a chrome mine.

Meanwhile, big cat lovers should head to the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Center, a sanctuary committed to protecting these superb creatures.

9. Maropeng Visitor Centre

Maropeng Visitor Centre

The Maropeng Visitor Centre, found within the Cradle of Humankind UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an incredible learning center and exhibition space located close to Magaliesburg.

The center showcases the rich discoveries that have been made in the area by archaeologists uncovering human fossils and remains and piecing together the early years of humanity.

It’s a great insight into the importance of southern Africa to the evolution of humankind as a whole. Its exhibits include stone tools thought to be a million years old, predating our own species by around 700,000 years.

10. Sterkfontein Caves

Sterkfontein Caves

The Sterkfontein Caves are located close to the Maropeng Visitor Centre and can be visited on the same day trip from Johannesburg.

Ten to 15 minutes apart, it’s well worth ensuring any tour you go on includes a shuttle between the two attractions.

The caves are part of the broader Cradle of Humankind UNESCO World Heritage Site because it was within these caves that many of the most important discoveries have been made.

These include the unearthing of many, very early human species, such as Australopithicus bones dated to around 3 million years ago.

The most famous example is probably Little Foot, a near complete skeleton 3.5 million years old. Little Foot was only discovered in 1994, and had enough of the ankle remaining to show he or she walked upright.

11. Krugersdorp

<yoastmark class=

Krugersdorp is predominantly a mining town, built to take advantage of the huge deposits of gold and minerals that were discovered in the Witwatersrand area close to Johannesburg.

The town itself may not have much to offer tourists, but the surrounding area is rich in beautiful scenery and many underground cave systems that can be explored.

A favourite place to visit is the aptly named Wonder Cave. One of South Africa’s largest caves, it drops 22 meters below ground.

Visitors are able to reach the bottom thanks to 87 steps, from where the range of stalagtites, stalagmites and cave pearls are best viewed.

A second top Krugersdorp attraction is the Bothongo Lion and Rhino Reserve, which has game drives in open-sided vehicles departing multiple times a day.

12. Cullinan

Cullinan, South Africa

Cullinan is another mining town found close to Johannesburg, and this town is very much of interest to those wanting to learn more about the history of the region, and the mining opportunities that brought many settlers here.

Many of the buildings date back to the early 20th century, when the town was first established. Walking through the streets is almost like taking a step back in time.

The town contains several small museums worth popping into, while horse rides and zip-lining are available in the surrounding countryside.

13. Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve

Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve

The Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve is an unusual nature reserve, in that it’s located less than ten miles from Johannesburg city center.

Being so close to the city, it’s surprising to find so much wildlife and beautiful scenery right on the doorstep, and makes for an easy escape, as well as a great look at the nature of the region.

So although Klipriviersberg might not meet the stature of either Kruger or Pilanesberg national parks, it still makes for a superb day out from Johannesburg.

The reserve has healthy populations of many ungulates and antelopes, including zebra, wildebeest, and red haartbeest. But Klipriversberg is best known as a birding destination, with 230 bird species identified in the reserve.

14. Skeerport

Skeerport is a quaint little town that’s found close to the Hartebeesport Dam, not far from Johannesburg.

This small town is set in glorious surroundings and is known as one of the area’s best hot air ballooning spots.

Take to the skies as the sun rises and enjoy the incredible scenery from the air. If you can manage the early morning departure from Johannesburg that is!

15. Bloemfontein

<yoastmark class=

Bloemfontein makes for a long day trip from Johannesburg, but it’s worth the drive to see South Africa’s judicial capital in all its glory.

The city center is awash with lawyers rushing from attractive building to attractive building.

Among them are several interesting museums, including a detailed Boer War Museum.

The city’s Loch Logan Waterfront complex is a nice place to do some shopping, before relaxing on the lake edge with a drink as the sun descends on another day in paradise.

1. Pilanesberg National Park

If you’re interested in an incredible safari experience, I highly recommend a visit to Pilanesberg National Park. Located about 200 km (125 miles) from Johannesburg, it’s a bit of a drive for a day trip, but it’s very worthwhile.

And – it’s considered to be malaria-free.

This park is home to a huge variety of wildlife, including the famous Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffaloes.

You’ll also have the opportunity to spot giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, and many other epic African animals .

Safaris in open-top or open-sided vehicles provide an excellent vantage point for viewing animals and appreciating the stunning scenery. Or take a self-drive safari in your own car!

Bush walks provide an even more immersive experience. Led by knowledgeable guides, these walks allow you to see signs of wildlife up close and learn about the local plants and trees.

Guides assist in identifying animal tracks and flora while making sure you stay safe throughout the excursion.

Valley of Waves in Sun City

2. Sun City

This popular complex sits right on the border of Pilanesberg National Park. Sun City is a luxury resort and casino, with a world-class golf course and a pretty spectacular water park.

It’s that water park, the Valley of Waves, that’s the biggest draw. It has waves, water and tube slides, and simple swimming and beach areas, as well as body surfing, a beach bar, and island cocktails. Who needs the ocean?

Sun City is also considered malaria-free!

In between dips, you can take a hike on one of the many beautiful paths around the Valley of Waves’ forests. Then have a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants before trying your luck at the casino.

There are also Go Karts, shops, bowling alleys, not to mention an escape room and a movie theatre. Something for everyone!

Check their website , too, before you go to find out if any epic concerts or special events are taking place while you’re in the area.

One caveat is that you’ll need to do a bit of pre-planning in order to visit. Tickets are required and must be booked online . It’s best to book as close to your time of entry as you can.

This way you can be sure the ticket won’t be wasted because of rain or other inclement weather. No refunds!

However, if you decide to spend a night at the resort , there is no need to book your activities in advance. The hotel will take care of all of that for you!

Hint : If you’re travelling with kids, stay at The Cabana . Your children will love their Kids’ Club.

You should be aware that the Valley of Waves closes for one month each winter (June-August) for maintenance. Check online before your trip to find out when.

*Keep in mind that only Valley of Waves ticket holders, hotels guest, or people with golf bookings can gain access to Sun City. This is to prevent exceeding its capacity. No walk-ins just to look around.

🕒 Sun City Hours of Operation : …. • 24 hours a day, 7 days a week …. • Valley of Waves: 10am to 5pm daily … • Casino, restaurants, shops, etc each ….. have their own hours. Check the Sun City website for details .

Entry Fees : Valley of Waves (</= 2yrs free) …. • Mon-Fri: Adult R450 (US $25) ……………. Kids (3-12 yrs) R350 (US $19) . … • Sat/Sun: Adult R395 (US $22) ……………. Kids (3-12yrs) R290 (US $16) … • Complimentary with resort hotel stay

Options for reaching Sun City from Johannesburg are similar to those for going to Pilanesberg, as they sit adjacent to each other.

  • If you’re driving, take the N4 highway > R512 > R556. The signage is good, and the 183km trip should take about 2.5 hours, depending on traffic and time of day.
  • If you’d rather not drive, you can take a shuttle to Rustenburg with Lime Time Shuttle Service . From there you can catch a taxi for the rest of the way. This is about a 3 or 4 -hour trip one-way, though.
  • Get a quote for shuttle service from Jozie’s OR Tambo Airport to Sun City.
  • Another option is to take a taxi for the entire trip, but this is pricey. You could spend up to R3500 (US $190).
  • Again, a great option is to book an organized trip

Maropeng at the Cradle of Humankind

3. Cradle of Humankind

The Cradle of Humankind is a UNESCO World Heritage site, located about 50 km (30 miles) from Jo’burg.

Some of the oldest hominid fossils that have ever been found, some dating as far back as 3.5 million years, were discovered right here.

There’s a lot to see in the Cradle area – you might find it hard to believe that this incredible spot is so close and accessible from Joburg!

➤ Maropeng Visitor Centre : The Maropeng is the visitors’ centre for the Cradle of Humankind. Inside is an amazing collection of interactive displays.

There are more than 12 sites around the Cradle where fossils have been discovered. Because not all of these are accessible to visitors, Maropeng was built to provide a view of the area’s ‘big picture’ when it comes to the finds here.

The start of your self-guided tour through the Maropeng Centre actually starts with a boat ride! This float on the man-made lake takes you to the displays.

If you find you’re not all that interested, you can zip through them in about an hour. I would plan for more, though, because they really are fascinating.

There is food available in the centre, which is fortunate because many people find it easy to spend an entire day with the exhibits.

And actually, if you decide to do just that, Maropeng has its own boutique hotel . Have a look at it and check availability right here .

When you reach the end of the displays, you’ll exit out the rear of the building. You’ll be met with a stunning view of the nearby Magaliesberg Mountains.

The Sterkfontein Caves are about a 10-minute drive away.

➤ Sterkfontein Caves : This paleontological treasure trove boasts many limestone caves, including the renowned Sterkfontein Caves.

This is where the famous Australopithecus fossil Mrs. Ples and Little Foot fossils were discovered. This time period was up to 2 million years ago.

More than 9,000 stone tools have been found in these caves as well. They’re a really fascinating look at where we all came from.

You can take a self-guided, interactive tour, and marvel at our evolutionary history.

*Not e: The caves have been known to close during periods of heavy rain.

➤ Nirox Sculpture Garden : Just a few minutes from the Maropeng Visitors’ Centre you’ll find this remarkable art installation.

In a lush green formal garden stands a collection of over 100 sculptures by both South African and international artists. You’ll find a different one around every corner.

A bit of a hidden gem for visitors, I strongly suggest making a stop here while you’re at the Cradle of Humankind.

Hours of Operation : Open daily from 9am to 4pm

Entry Fees : Book tickets online at the Maropeng Website . Maropeng – Adults: R100 (US $5.40) Sterkfontein Caves: R100 (US $5.40) Children under 6 – free for both

  • Driving from Joburg to Maropeng is about 57km, and will take about an hour, depending on the traffic and time of day. I advise you to use a GPS or Google Maps to get you there.
  • Another option is to hire a taxi.
  • There are several excellent, well-priced tours that will take care of transportation for you.

Lesedi Cultural Village - Sotho woman at tribal house

4. Lesedi Cultural Village Tour

Also located within the Cradle of Humankind, and less than an hour from Johannesburg, is the Lesedi Cultural Village. Lesedi is a tourist village, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything else.

If you’re looking for a quiet, authentic little African town, this probably isn’t for you.

What it is, is a really interesting display of African tribal cultures . Five different local tribes are represented, and you’ll get to see replicas of traditional dwellings and a glimpse of tribal living.

What’s unique about this tourist village is that families actually live in these dwellings. They care for livestock and give tours of their homes.

There are morning tours as well as late afternoon tours. The afternoon ones tend to be a bit more festive, and they carry on to the evening around a fire.

You’ll get to see traditional dancing and singing after an African buffet at the onsite restaurant.

If you decide to stay the night, one of the families will welcome you into their traditional home and act as your guide.

  • The drive is about 60 km (38 miles) on Pelindaba and R512. As always, I recommend that you enlist the help of Google Maps or a GPS to get where you’re going.
  • A taxi is an alternative, albeit a pricey one.
  • There are several tour options if you’d like to see the village.

Bridge over Crocodile River in the Magaliesburg Mountains

5. Magaliesburg

Located just an hour’s drive northwest of Johannesburg, this mountain range offers hiking trails, bird-watching opportunities, and adventure galore.

In fact, day trip though it may be, there’s so much to do in Magaliesburg, you just might end up staying.

Though it is a bit confusing, Magaliesburg is not actually in the Magaliesberg Mountains. Instead, it sits about 8km south, in the Witwatersrand range.

The activities seem endless. Many of these are easiest to enjoy if you book a tour ahead of time. I’ve included links to some great trips if you decide that’s how you want to go.

➤ Take a hot air balloon ride over the Magaliesberg and Witwatersrand Mountains.

Even if you’ve been lucky enough to have taken a balloon ride elsewhere, in Africa it’s an utterly unique experience. And a balloon ride in South Africa is much cheaper than in places like East Africa.

On this tour , you can sip champagne and enjoy the cool air and the unbeatable views. Post-flight, indulge in a delicious breakfast.

You can join your pilot at the launch site in Skeerport, west of Hartbeespoort Dam. Or you can have a driver pick you up at your Joburg hotel.

➤ Fly over Magaliesberg’s canopies on a zipline.

Ziplining in the Magaliesberg Mountains is an exhilarating experience that offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. It’s a whole new perspective.

You’ll zing through the air at speeds of up to 60 kilometres an hour, soaring over ysterhhout kloof. Also known as a gorge full of ages-old ironwood trees.

This Private Magaliesberg Canopy Zip Lining Adventure is a great choice for a trip to the top of the trees.

You’ll be anywhere from 20-140 meters high in the sky, with an experienced guide to make sure it’s done right.

There’s even a helmet thrown in for your use.

They offer pick-up from your Johannesburg hotel, or you can meet up at the Sparkling Waters Hotel and Spa in the mountains. This is where your adventure will begin.

If you’d prefer to zipline with other adventurers instead of on a private tour, this Canopy Experience might be more your style.

  • If you’re driving, the route to the town of Magaliesburg is about 66 km (41 miles) on the R24. There are tolls on this road.
  • Taking a taxi is an option for a very rough estimate of R1000 (US $55)
  • There is a shuttle from Jozie’s OR Tambo Airport to Magaliesburg (JHB 6).

Hartbeespoort Dam

6. The Hartbeespoort Dam

About an hour from Magaliesburg, this area is full of activities like abseiling, horse riding, and rafting. And if you run into wet weather, the Hartbeespoort Dam Aquarium is a great alternative.

There are some really amazing day tours available . Here are a couple of my own favourites:

➤ Ride the Harties Aerial Cableway (‘Harties’ is short for Hartbeespoort)

Travel to the mountaintop for the insane panoramic views. This is actually the longest mono-cableway in all of Africa, and the only cable car in South Africa .

As you travel up, be on the lookout for wildlife below. The cable car is a great vantage point for it!

At the top, there’s a pretty loop around the top to walk, and you can stop for a drink at the Lookout Bar before heading back down (cash only). Try and get one of the great bean bag chairs to lounge in while you sip.

There’s also a small playground for the kids.

Meet up with your tour group in Hartbeespoort.

• Combine a horse ride with the cableway with the horse-ride safari cable car tour . This one includes a 2-hour horse ride viewing wildlife – nothing that can eat you, though.

Then you get to ride the cable car up the mountain with the view and a cocktail as your reward. Your guide will pick you up at your hotel in Jozie, and drop you off at the end of your day.

• Or take advantage of this boat cruise, snake and animal park, and cableway tour . This full-day trip really lets you see the beauty of the Hartebeespoort area.

  • If you’re driving, Hartbeespoort is about 86 km (53 miles) on the R512. There are tolls on this road.
  • Taking a taxi is an option for a very rough estimate of R1622 (US $85)
  • There is a shuttle from Jozie’s OR Tambo Airport to Magaliesburg (PTA 9).

The Cullinan Mine's "Big Hole" in the earth

7. The Cullinan Diamond Mine

Just over an hour’s drive east of Johannesburg lies the town of Cullinan, home to the renowned Cullinan Diamond Mine. This is the world’s only diamond mine that offers tours.

The mine is famous for uncovering the largest gem-quality diamond ever found, known as the Cullinan Diamond. Found in 1905, the stone was a full 3106 carats .

The giant rock was cut into 9 gems and given as a gift to the British Royal Family by the South African government. But you will get to hold a replica on your visit.

The mine is also the world’s main source of the very rare blue diamond.

You can join guided tours of the mine to learn about the diamond mining process and view the shaft as they operate.

A tour includes an experienced guide who will fill you in on how diamonds were formed . They’ll show off the display room that holds replicas of the world’s most famous diamonds.

A life-size model of an underground tunnel has even been constructed so we can see how they’re built.

These surface tours are about 2 hours long. If you’d like to take an underground tour, you will need to allow for 4 and a half hours.

I haven’t had the chance to take the underground tour, but I’ve heard that it really is fascinating.

However, at the time of writing, the underground has been halted . Check the website before you go to find out if it’s available.

When you’re done, stop at the gift shop and treat yourself!

Notes : there are age limits for the tours. For a surface tour, you must be at least 10 years old. For an underground tour, you need to be 16. And no open-toe/heel shoes!

Also , be sure to book in advance, and to arrive at least 15 minutes early for the surface tour, and a half hour early for the underground tour. This is necessary so you can be outfitted with safety gear.

Hours of Operation :

  • Mon-Fri 10:30am to 2pm
  • Sat/Sun & Public Holidays 10:30am to 12:15pm
  • Groups are welcome 7 days a week at any time

Tour Cost :

  • Surface Tour = R120 (US $6.50)
  • Underground Tour = R550 (US $30)
  • If you’re driving yourself to the mine, click here to book your tour in advance on their website .

How To Get There

  • If you’re driving, the 97 km from Jozie is the fastest on the N1 and R513. Once you get close, if you don’t have a GPS with you, you can follow the detailed directions given at the bottom of the Cullinan Mine booking page . They’ll take you right there.
  • An organized tour takes the stress out of the day, and you won’t have to worry about getting there.

Cullinan Diamond Mine Tour

This tour shows you the fascinating workings of a real diamond mine – the only mine in the world that offers tours. From pick-up to drop-off your day is about 5 hours.

The Cullinan Diamond Mine

This 2-hour surface tour gets high ratings and includes:

  • An expert guide to provide escort and commentary
  • Entrance to the mine

Former powerplant i Soweto

Soweto, an acronym for “ So uth We stern To wnships,” is a township located southwest of Johannesburg. Once its own entity, Soweto is now a suburb of the city.

It was to this area that black people were removed when whites-only residential areas were established in Johannesburg.

Soweto played a significant role during the apartheid era. It’s home to the famous Vilakazi Street, where both Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu once lived .

You can explore the Hector Pieterson Museum, and Regina Mundi Church, and experience the energetic atmosphere of this historic community.

There’s a lot to see, and a lot of history to absorb.

  • As a suburb of Joburg, Soweto is only about 25 km from the city centre, and there are several ways to get there. If you’d like to drive, I’d advise the use of Google Maps or GPS.
  • A taxi is an easy way to go in the city.
  • Take the Rea Vaya bus. Find a route schedule on their website .
  • Take the Metrorail from the Johannesburg Park Station on Rissik Street, to Merafe in Soweto.

Soweto Walking Tour

A walk through Soweto is a terrific way to get to know the town. You guide is a Soweto local – who better to show you around and fill you in on the history here.

A Welcome to Soweto sign at the edge of town

This 5 Star half-day tour includes:

  • a South African-style lunch
  • multiple stops at historical landmarks
  • choice of morning or afternoon tours

* Note that some admission fees are not included

A view of the Vaal River in South Africa, lesser known of the day trips from Johannesburg.

9. Vaal River

Approximately 3 hours drive south of Johannesburg, the Vaal River offers a terrific escape. You can choose between a relaxing day by the water, rafting over the rapids, or a lot of activities in between.

The Vaal is the second-longest river in South Africa , and it has a scenic spot for whatever suits your fancy. Joburgurs flock here on weekends, so if you can visit during the week, even better.

The river is a popular destination for fishing, boating, and water sports such as kayaking, canoeing, and kite surfing. The Vaal Dam is your spot if these are what you’re looking for.

White water rafting is best between the towns of Parys and Christiana. Though Vaal River is a year-round destination, rafting is best and November through January .

EARTH Adventures is a great local tour company to book a rafting trip with. They can also set up abseiling, quad biking, and all sorts of other activities for you.

Or you can enjoy a day on the water, picnicking along the riverbanks, or even taking a scenic river cruise. Try the Upper Vaal for a leisurely day, around the high-end resort towns of Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging.

The so-called Vaal Triangle comprises the area bordered by Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging, and Sasolburg. Here you can find the best shopping, dining, and accommodations in the Vaal River area.

The Vaal Mall is a large shopping mall, with all of the most popular South African stores. Be sure to venture out of the mall, though, to the many other small shops in the Vaal Triangle.

It’s easy because they’re all right there.

There is a great selection of restaurants as well, for whatever you might be in the mood for. I highly recommend the Gas Monkey Pub and Grill !

  • Driving is the best way to get to the river. If you take the N1 out of Johannesburg and merge onto the R59, the signs will take you right there. If you’re aiming for Parys for some rafting, the 111km drive should only take about an hour and a half.
  • You have the option of taking a taxi from Johannesburg, but again this can be costly.
  • A public bus is a good, inexpensive option, but a bus ride usually takes a bit longer.

The Best Time to Visit Johannesburg

Johannesburg is a great city to visit year-round, but t here are definitely some times that are better than others . Here’s a quick rundown of the best times to visit Johannesburg, based on weather and crowds:

March to May : This is the shoulder season in Johannesburg. The weather is still warm and sunny, but the crowds have started to thin out. This is a great time to visit if you’re looking for a more affordable and less crowded experience.

September to November : This is spring in Johannesburg. The weather is mild and perfect for exploring the city, especially its parks and gardens.

December to February : This is the summer in Johannesburg. The weather tends to be hot and humid. This is not the best time to visit if you’re not a fan of heat.

> Here are some other things to keep in mind when planning your trip to Johannesburg:

The rainy season : Johannesburg’s rainy season is from November to April, but it’s not usually a heavy rain. Check the forecast if you’re planning on doing any outdoor activities.

The bushfire season : The bushfire season in South Africa is from November to March. If you’re planning on visiting any national parks or game reserves, it’s important to check the fire conditions before you go.

Staying Safe in Johannesburg

Johannesburg has a higher crime rate than some other cities in South Africa . However, as long as you take the usual precautions, you should be fine.

✔️ Simple, common sense things are your best defences. Measures like not carrying valuables with you and being aware of your surroundings will go a long way toward keeping you safe .

✔️ Being aware means staying conscious of where you are and who is around you. If you’re feeling uncomfortable, trust your gut and move on.

✔️ Also, don’t walk around alone at night, and be careful when taking taxis.

✔️ Some neighbourhoods are more safe than others, so it’s important to do your research before you go. The Johannesburg section of this Safest Cities article will let you in on the parts of the city that require the most caution.

What to Expect

This is a full, moderately strenuous program that is at times physically demanding and busy and requires you to be in good health and able to keep up with the group without assistance from tour staff. In order to make the most of what each locale has to offer, days will generally be long, with the daily program often beginning early in the morning and continuing into the early evening. We will cover rugged terrain and walks on daily excursions can range from one to two miles, often on uneven terrain in the warm sun, where handrails are not available. During the time in Johannesburg and Cape Town, travel will be by modern, air-conditioned motor coaches on paved roads. Land-based game drives will be by open-air safari vehicles, which can be dusty and bumpy, and that travelers will need to climb in and out of. The time spent at the game park includes early morning and late afternoon game drives, but there will be time midday to relax and enjoy a slower pace. Water-based game drives will be from small watercraft with chair-style seating; you will need to be able to get into and out of small watercraft with the assistance of tour staff and crew. Aboard the Zambezi Queen , there is no elevator, and you should feel comfortable walking on a rocking surface at times.

We will use commercial aircraft for the four on-tour flights: Johannesburg/Kasane, Victoria Falls/Cape Town, Cape Town/Skukuza, and Skukusa/Johannesburg.

Anyone with a serious medical condition or who has difficulty walking should not consider this trip. Please let us know if you have mobility issues that need special accommodation.

This promises to be a memorable journey, but as with all travel, a flexible attitude, a spirit of adventure, and a willingness to explore new areas will enhance your enjoyment of this program. You do not have to participate in all scheduled activities, except when traveling to the next destination. We are sure you will be pleased with the exciting educational program provided, but we want you to be aware of the pace and activity level.

Day trip to Suzdal from Moscow: transport, sights, maps and tips

day trip johannesburg

 DAY TRIP TO SUZDAL

Suzdal is one of the most popular destinations on the Golden Ring and the whole city is often described as an open-air museum.  The city has no railway station and practically no heavy industry, meaning that is has preserved its provincial charm and a great deal of architectural monuments.

day trip johannesburg

From Moscow, Suzdal is not as easy to get to as Sergiev Posad (the closest Golden Ring city to the capital) but it is worth going the extra distance as Suzdal provides more of a contrast from Moscow.  If you make use of high-speed trains it is possible and not too demanding to visit for even just a day, but of course spending the night there is recommended to soak in the atmosphere or to combine it with a visit to neighbouring Vladimir.  As the city is a very popular tourist destination you will have no problem finding a cafe or guesthouse there.  There is practically no public transport in the city, but the city is small and most sights are located relatively close to each other.

Getting There and Back

day trip johannesburg

Via Vladimir

day trip johannesburg

Direct to Suzdal

Buses directly to Suzdal leave from Moscow’s Schyolkovsky Bus Station.  There are about 9 buses a day and it takes around 4½ hours depending on traffic.  The buses stop at Vladimir too.  Using this option will mean a rather exhausting day trip.

Orientation and Main Sights

day trip johannesburg

Suzdal is a relatively small city and it is not difficult to walk around the city to see most of the sights.

Suzdal

The main road in the city is Ulitsa Lenina which runs north across the whole city.

Suzdal

The main sights of Suzdal are located either on or just off this road, including the two main sights: the Suzdal Kremlin in the south and the Spaso-Yevfimiev Monastery in the north.

Suzdal

More information about Suzdal can be found on our Suzdal  pages.

day trip johannesburg

Suzdal is famous for its medovukha (mead) which is an alcoholic drink made out of honey.  It can be drunk either hot or cold, meaning it perfect in both summer and winter, and you will find it on practically every menu in the city.  There are various flavours of the drink available and even a non-alcoholic version.  In addition to medovukha, you can find all traditional Russian souvenirs in the city and there is a big souvenir market on Torgovaya Ploschad.
