17 Accredited Drive Through Zoos and Safaris in the U.S.

After years of traveling around the United States, both with my family and without, I have run across many drive through zoos, safari parks, and wildlife preserves. As traditional zoos have transitioned to animal conservation and education over entertainment, there has been a shift to larger, more natural animal habitats and enclosures. The nice thing about drive through safaris and zoos is that most have acres and acres of land for animals to roam in a much more natural setting.

I constantly struggle with the benefits of zoos versus the negative impacts of keeping animals in captivity. Although I know many have different views, I see many benefits of these safari and wildlife parks from seeing the simple joy on a child’s face when they see an animal in person that inspires a lifelong interest in animal preservation, to the important research that these parks provide in understanding animal behavior and saving them from extinction.

That said, I do think we need to be careful about which establishments we support, which is why I have included only the zoos and safari parks that are accredited members of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums or the Zoological Association of America .

Drive Through Zoos & Safaris

I have intentionally left out a few safari parks, even ones that I have visited because greater research showed that they weren’t accredited by one of those two widely recognized organizations. (I found this article helpful in understanding the different types of accreditation and what it means.)

As of this writing, this list is only of drive through zoos and safaris that are accredited AZA or ZAA establishments or overseen by government wildlife entities. I have included drive through safaris and wildlife parks where you can either self-drive your own vehicle or take a safari tour or safari ride through the animal habitats.

Safari Drive-Thru

The Virginia Safari Park, located in Natural Bridge, offers visitors the opportunity to see and feed animals up-close from their vehicles in the safari drive-thru attraction.

drive through safari where you feed animals

Take a drive on the wild side!

The Virginia Safari Park is a beautiful 180-acre drive-thru safari park nestled in the rolling hills of the Shenandoah Valley and home to more than 1,200 rare and endangered animals that roam free in a natural setting. From the comfort of your car, you’ll see antelopes, bison, bull elk, the rare Pere David’s deer, emus, ostriches, wildebeest and many more. Roll down your window and extend a bucket of feed and you’ll get a visit from many of them wanting a snack.

In the Safari, you'll be able to see animals run and frolic with abandon. Take your time as you drive along the three miles of maintained gravel road. Feed the animals through your vehicle windows and be prepared to stop for them as they stroll across your path or even lie down.

Our animals are allowed to roam freely and act instinctively. This means you might see males competing with each other for the females’ attention, resulting in cute baby animals being born throughout the season. You could be among the lucky visitors who witness a live birth and the first steps of the newborn.

Feed the Animals

As you make your way along the road in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Shenandoah Valley, stop every once in a while to feed the animals our specialty grain mixture.

You’ll never forget the experience of one of our huge bull elk or bison eating from your bucket of feed. Drive through as many times as you like to give everyone in your group a chance to have a memorable encounter like this. Download our guidebook

Our 2nd time visiting Giraffe Ranch, got to say, this place is like Heaven on Earth for us animal lovers! They take exquisite care of these cherished animals. They are so beautiful and look amazing! They are also quite happy judging by how well they are reproducing! The new drive thru tour was fabulous and I got to see the place from a different perspective as the segway tour from before. Oh, and don't forget to add the lemur and otter feedings! OMG, they are sooooooo cute! I am in love!

a close up of a sign

The Safari Tour was something fun to do during the pandemic. We got to have the experience of going to the zoo without the crowds. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and it was fun for the whole family!!!!

a drawing of a person

If you want to get a more personal experience with animals, this is definitely the place to go! We signed up for the Safari Tour to feed the giraffes and lemurs and it was amazing! You literally walk into a cage with the lemurs and get to feed them right out of your hand. The giraffes come right up to the truck and take the cabbage right out of your hands as well. The truck gets so close to these animals and you feel like you are right next to them. It is such a wild experience and I can’t wait to visit again!

Informative, educational and fun. The interaction with gentle creatures like the Lemurs and Giraffes made our day. A clean, well maintained facility where it soon becomes obvious that love for the animals is primary!

I went with a group from a local bank. What an incredible day! You can get face to face with sweet giraffes, camels, etc. Feeding the animals was just awesome. The husband and wife who own the ranch are personable and very knowledgeable. In addition to playing with the animals, I learned a lot. I recommend this excursion for all ages. I just can't say enough about this place. The animals are clearly very happy. It was a delight to get to know them up close. It was well worth the drive from Clearwater.

An incredible close up experience with guides who know and are interested in passing on that information. This is so worth the money and your time. A great experience.

a screen shot of an animal

We enjoyed the tour! The owners are so knowledgeable about the animals and places around the world. We first sat down for a little education about horns and teeth and then we went in to feed the lemurs. They were so cute and fun! We then went on the llama tour. If you have never walked a llama, I highly recommend the experience. We saw tons of animals that you would typically see in the wild on a safari. We came back and hopped in the truck for a drive to feed the giraffes. They have two babies. They are beautiful animals. It was a fun adventure.

We did the safari jeep tour and had a great time. Lots of interesting animals to see and feed. The owners were knowledgeable and gave a great tour. Would recommend to anyone.

My mom surprised us with this trip for Christmas. It was incredible to be that close and personal with the giraffes - and to hand feed them cabbage and sweet potatoes. The owners are so knowledgeable and present everything with a refreshing level of humor.

Commonly asked questions.

Since the 1940s, Olympic Game Farm in Sequim, WA has been dedicated to the welfare and well-being of animals. As a drive-through wildlife exhibit, we are entirely funded by tourists and are a fun place to experience wildlife at your own pace. We strive to be a source of wildlife education for families and tourists!

Letter from Robert Beebe, President

With over 200 animals on-site , our driving tour leaves our visitors with vivid memories of these amazing creatures; experiences which, at first are hard to imagine, become pleasantly surprising. Friendly llamas and yak eat bread from your hand, clowning bears stand up and wave, and the elk and buffalo peacefully graze in the pastures.

Olympic Game Farm worked exclusively for Walt Disney Studios for 28 years, filming here at the farm and on the Olympic Peninsula, as well as on many different set locations. A few popular titles produced with our past animal actors are “Charlie the Lonesome Cougar,” “The Incredible Journey,” “White Wilderness,” and “Grizzly Adams” television and movie series. In 2012, we had used our black bear “Kitty” and wolf “Brutus” in “Serenity Farms”. In winter of 2013, we used “Kitty” once again in a National Geographic documentary on black bear in the city. Summer of 2014, “Leland” a black tail deer was used in the filming of “Captain Fantastic” as well as Olympic Game Farm used as a filming location for a scene.

After the death of Walt and Roy Disney, Disney Studios began to move away from the nature films that had been so dear to Walt’s heart. In 1972, with the approval of the Disney Studios for using the Disney name, Olympic Game Farm, Inc. was opened to the public. Our founders Lloyd and Catherine Beebe retired from the filming industry and focused solely on caring for their animal actors, concentrating on offering “in need” captive bred animals a new and loving home. Olympic Game Farm will continue to accept in-need wildlife, as space permits and with the proper authority approvals. We cannot accept local animals from the wild without proper permission from Washington State Fish and Wildlife.

Lloyd Beebe passed along his trait, his dedication, and his love for wildlife to his grandsons Robert Beebe and James Beebe, along with their uncle Kenneth Beebe, who have taken over the daily operations of the Olympic Game Farm since 2008.

Thank you for your interest,

Robert L. Beebe

President, OGF

Recognitions

We won the Wildlife Conservation of the Year award in 1996 from the Washington Association of Conservation Districts (WACD). Lloyd and Catherine Beebe and Olympic Game Farm were honored through a Senate Resolution 8612 on January 20, 2011. Lloyd Beebe won Filmdom’s Famous Five’s 1960 from Film Daily.

Are pets allowed inside our vehicle while driving?

Yes, pets are allowed as long as they are kept inside an enclosed vehicle and unable to escape your vehicle. All pets must be on a leash when outside the vehicle in permitted areas.

Why was the game farm started?

In the 1950’s to 1972, Olympic Game Farm (then called Disney’s Wild Animal Ranch) was originally designed as a holding facility for the animal actors of Disney Studios. During breaks from filming, the animals were trained, housed, and cared for while waiting for future filming. Disney Studios had asked us to keep the public and cameras out of the Farm.

White tiger at Olympic Game Farm

However, in the summer of 1972 after Roy Disney’s passing, we allowed people in to see what the Farm was all about. This informal opening was also a test to see if we could achieve our long-term goals in caring for the animals without a steady income from Disney Studios—to see if we could make it on our own. After that summer, we let Disney Studios know how well we did. Disney Studios ultimately held a vote from their Board of Directors and decided it was ok to continue to be open to the public and retain any earnings received. That same year, we officially opened to the public as a private wildlife organization and became incorporated in 1973.

Where do the animals come from?

Several of the animals are either rehomed, come as overflow from other licensed facilities, or have been received from other properly licensed individuals.

How do you afford to feed them?

Currently, all proceeds from tourism are put into animal care and feeding. This includes all operating costs (employees, licensing, feed, utilities, repairs, etc.) associated with caring for our animals. In the past, filmmaking and tourism was the mainstay; however, as the years and societal attitudes have evolved the film industry genre, live animal actors are no longer in high demand. We do receive donations from the local dairy farms and equestrians, or from a farm hobbyist. Income made from the summer season carries the Farm through the lean winter months. This presents tough budgeting constraints and is a tremendous struggle each year.

Do you accept random donations?

Yes, the Olympic Game Farm does accept any reasonable donations. Naturally, the best donation is monetarily, but we will consider all other types.

Are you open year round?

Olympic Game Farm is open year round but will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day in order to spend time with our families.

Do the animals come out during the rain or snow?

Yes, most if not all the animals are accustomed to our Northwest weather. All the animals have their own shelters and privacy areas if they need.

When is the best time to view the animals?

We always suggest mornings to early afternoons to be the best times, as most of our animals tend to lounge in the later afternoon times and take naps.

What is the difference between a wildlife park and a game farm?

A wildlife park/zoo is usually publicly funded by city, county, and/or state funds or a group of investors. Game farms are usually in connection with commerce, such as breeding, selling, or trading and are privately funded by the owners. Some game farms are associated with “canned” hunting but Olympic Game Farm does not practice this. In our case, “Game Farm” denotes that there are game animals located and housed here but not for hunting.

Are the animals at the Game Farm still used by the movie industry?

We have used a few of our current animals in several films, “Serenity Farms,” “Captain Fantastic,” and a National Geographic documentary on black bears and city encroachment. However, we are not actively seeking animal work in the film industry.

How long does the tour take?

Typical drive tour takes anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour but it is completely self-paced. The admission ticket is good for all day until closing. On major holiday weekends, wait times and lines can and do occur, thus extending drive tour time.

Are we allowed to bring our own bread to feed?

No outside bread at this time. Throughout the year (depending on the season) other food items will be available for purchase.  This is at our discretion .  Specific days, food items and other information will be available upon arrival.

Why can’t we bring in fruit or other food items to feed the animals?

You can donate fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, or fresh-caught fish to Olympic Game Farm but U.S.D.A. (APHIS) has a strict rule about customers feeding our animals. Wheat bread is the ONLY type of feed allowed to be given by the customers. Olympic Game Farm will accept fresh fruit and fresh vegetables but it will need to be inspected by us and fed out by us or under strict observation if permitted by senior management. Bread has been proven to be an excellent source of fat and fiber for our animals. Large animals differ from humans and domesticated animals tremendously, with their fat & nutritional needs. Rotten, moldy, or freezer dried items will not be accepted. We cannot accept anything from your personal freezer. Please call and check first about any other food items.

What other type of feed is given to the animals besides bread?

Each animal has a well-balanced nutritional diet based on their nutritional needs by our veterinarian care plan. Meat, poultry, fish, nuts, berries, vegetables, fruit, roots, vitamins, minerals, hay, & grain are fed daily, during business hours and after closing.

We do ask for customers to not take it upon themselves to decide what is best to feed our animals. Any food items other than the bread brought to feed will be held at the gate until the tour is over and it will be returned. Violators will be asked to leave.

We ask this, not only because of the U.S.D.A. rule, but also because each animal is carefully monitored and fed daily. Some of the animals are not allowed certain foods due to medical reasons, dental problems, allergies, being strict carnivores, etc.

For the best interest of our animals, it is important only wheat or whole grain bread from the Game Farm is fed to them. Produce or meat could make the animals sick.

Are convertibles/open vehicles permitted?

All vehicles must be fully enclosed at all times for your safety. Jeeps, Broncos, etc. must have sides and tops on, making it fully enclosed. NO MOTORCYCLES, SCOOTERS, MOPEDS, OR BICYCLES ARE PERMITTED on drive tour.

Can R.V’S or buses drive through the farm?

Yes. We have a delegated road for larger vehicle. The only animals you will not see are the prairie dogs and sika deer.

What was the difference between the original walk tour and the new “Mini Tour”?

The difference between the original walk and the new mini-tour is: • In the original tour, a tour guide would walk visitors through the predator area in addition to the barn and aquarium and was only offered to groups of 10 people or more when scheduled in advance at an additional charge. • In the “mini-tour,” all visitors can enjoy the experience at their own leisure but the predator compound is not included as this area is included in our driving tour.

When are the busiest times? Or what times/days to avoid long lines and traffic congestion inside OGF?

PLEASE plan your trip to Olympic Game Farm prior to your arrival here.

The busiest weekends are Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are the busiest days of those two holiday weekends. Saturday and Sunday can see over 500 cars each day with peak times from ranging from 11 a.m. to 4-5 p.m. Traffic congestion throughout the Farm is always a concern during this time and we ask that all visitors be conscious and courteous to other visitors who are also trying to enjoy themselves as they drive around the Farm. Remember, your receipt is good all day until closing so that you can go around multiple times as needed. Also, our animals do get tired towards the afternoon/evening and can/will start to ignore people as the day wears on.

On a typical summer week, Saturday would be the busiest day and slowly tapers to the lowest day of Wednesday, then building back up each day. Beginning from 11 a.m., the peak traffic begins and eventually lessens after 3 p.m. as the animals grow tired and head to their sleeping areas for the evening.

Our employees do work as fast as possible to keep the entry traffic lines moving smoothly and quickly; however, the lines move as fast as our patrons allow us to work. We encourage that our visitors already have family plans/arrangements (such as who is paying and with what form of payment, also to know the ages of children, any discounts, etc.) made prior to entering the Farm.

Have questions about the history of our farm or admission ? Contact us today at (360) 683-4295 and we will be happy to help

This Unforgettable Drive-Thru Safari In Ohio Will Transport You Straight To Africa

By: Author Jackson Taylor

Posted on August 29, 2024

Driving through the heart of Ohio , you might not expect to encounter a slice of Africa, but that’s precisely what awaits at The Wilds in Cumberland.

This sprawling conservation center, hidden in the rolling hills, promises an adventure unlike any other.

As you embark on a journey through this unexpected savannah, you’ll be greeted by exotic animals, breathtaking landscapes, and a sense of wonder that’s hard to match.

Wondering what it feels like to embark on a safari without leaving the Midwest?

the wilds 1

Located on reclaimed mining land, The Wilds is a testament to nature’s resilience and human ingenuity.

This remarkable place spans over 10,000 acres, providing a sanctuary for both animals and visitors.

The moment you enter, the vast expanse of greenery and the distant silhouettes of giraffes and rhinos will make you forget you’re in Ohio.

the wilds 2

The Wilds offers a variety of experiences, but the drive-thru safari is the crown jewel.

You’ll find yourself face-to-face with creatures you’d typically see on a National Geographic special.

The safari tour, conducted in an open-air vehicle, takes you through various habitats, each meticulously designed to mimic the natural environments of the animals.

As you bounce along the dirt paths, each turn reveals a new scene straight out of the wilderness.

Zebras, with their black and white stripes, look like they’ve wandered off the pages of a children’s book, casually munching on grass as if posing for your camera.

And then there are the rhinos, looking like ancient armored tanks, sprawling lazily under the sun.

They’ve got this nonchalant attitude, like they’re saying, “Yeah, we know we’re impressive.”

the wilds 3

The guides are the unsung heroes of this adventure.

They’re like walking encyclopedias, sharing tidbits that make you go, “Really? I had no idea!”

You learn about the animals’ habits, their likes and dislikes, and heartwarming stories of conservation efforts that make you feel all fuzzy inside.

Suddenly, you’re not just a tourist—you’re part of something bigger, something important.

While the animals are undoubtedly the main attraction, the scenery itself deserves admiration.

Rolling hills, serene lakes, and lush meadows create a picturesque backdrop.

The landscape changes with the seasons, offering something unique every time you visit.

Spring brings blooming wildflowers, while autumn paints the hills in hues of red and gold.

the wilds 4

Beyond just the drive-thru safari, The Wilds offers a delightful smorgasbord of activities to jazz up your visit.

The group sunset safari is like having a front-row seat to nature’s very own light show.

You can watch the sunset while being surrounded by majestic animals.

The animals seem to know they’re part of something special, and they strut their stuff accordingly.

For those who enjoy taking it slow and steady, the horseback safari is the way to go.

Trotting along on a trusty steed, you get to soak in the landscape at a pace that allows you to appreciate every nook and cranny of this vast conservation area.

the wilds 5

If you’re feeling a little adventurous, the zipline safari got you covered.

Think of it as nature’s roller coaster, but without the long lines and overpriced cotton candy.

Zipping through the air, you get a bird’s-eye view of the sprawling terrain beneath you.

It’s exhilarating and serene all at once.

the wilds 6

Accommodation options at The Wilds ensure that your adventure doesn’t end when the sun goes down.

The Nomad Ridge offers luxury yurts with stunning views of the landscape.

Falling asleep to the distant sounds of wildlife and waking up to a serene sunrise is an experience in itself.

For a more rustic stay, the cabins at Straker Lake provide a cozy retreat.

The Wilds offers a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, making it an ideal getaway for families, couples, and solo travelers alike.

the wilds 7

Dining at The Wilds is another delight.

The Overlook Café, aptly named for its panoramic views, serves a variety of delicious meals.

Enjoy a hearty lunch while watching the animals roam in the distance.

The café sources local ingredients, ensuring a fresh and flavorful dining experience.

For those who prefer picnicking, several spots within the park offer scenic views and a tranquil setting to enjoy your meal.

the wilds 8

The Wilds also plays a significant role in conservation and research.

The center collaborates with various organizations to protect endangered species and their habitats.

By visiting, you’re contributing to these vital efforts.

The knowledgeable staff is always eager to share their work and the impact it has on global conservation.

The sense of purpose and dedication is palpable, adding another layer of meaning to your visit.

Kids and adults alike will find plenty to engage with at The Wilds.

Learn about the breeding programs and the efforts to reintroduce species into the wild.

The hands-on activities and informative displays make it a fun and enlightening experience for all ages.

the wilds 9

Accessibility is a key feature at The Wilds.

The drive-thru safari and other tours are designed to accommodate visitors of all ages and abilities.

The open-air vehicles are equipped for comfort, ensuring everyone can enjoy the adventure.

The staff is always ready to assist, making sure your visit is as enjoyable and stress-free as possible.

It’s this attention to detail that makes The Wilds a standout destination.

Throughout your visit, the sense of being in a different world never fades.

The juxtaposition of Ohio’s rolling hills with the exotic animal life creates a surreal experience.

Each encounter, whether it’s with a towering giraffe or a playful zebra, leaves a lasting impression.

The Wilds manages to strike a perfect balance between adventure and serenity, making it an unforgettable destination.

Joe Rogan Calls Himself Out on Podcast—'I'm a Hypocrite'

J oe Rogan has called himself a "hypocrite" over his stance against zoos, having taken his children to see animals at such spaces in the past.

The powerhouse podcaster , who has three daughters with Jessica Ditzel, his wife of 15 years , shared his stance on zoos when standup comic Raanan Hershberg made an appearance on a recent installment of The Joe Rogan Experience .

Hershberg spoke about how much he has enjoyed Rogan's past stand-up albums, before bringing up one of his jokes about "the tiger in the zoo, the monster in the box."

"I kind of remember it," Rogan responded, before going on to talk about incidents where animals in enclosures at zoos have attacked people.

"I don't agree with zoos at all," Rogan later told Hershberg. "I'm a hypocrite, because I took my kids to them because I want my kids to be able to see these animals because it's kind of cool to see a 2-year-old staring at a hippo. But the reality is they're prisons. They're prisons for animals that didn't do anything wrong."

Hershberg countered that "it's a little different in the sense that their life outside of prison is pretty messed up, getting killed."

"It's natural," Rogan argued. "It's not... they're not all getting killed, you know. They're doing some killing, too, which is also unnatural that you just feed these things that live to kill."

"I guess the zoo is better for the prey," Hershberg noted.

"It's definitely better," Rogan responded. "I used to have a joke about that too, about the only animal that I don't feel bad about in the zoo is giraffes. They don't seem to have any problem with it at all, like another day with no lions."

"They have a big enough enclosure and they can walk around they don't seem to have any problem with it," he added.

The former Fear Factor host then returned his focus to criticizing zoos, as he recommended that people wanting to see animals should do so at African-style safaris.

"The whole thing's crazy," Rogan said. "And I get it does protect some endangered species, but boy I think if we really care about animals we should put a lot more money into it and there should be a lot larger spaces. It shouldn't be anything remotely resembling a zoo."

"It sick," he added of zoos. "The way they do it in Africa is the way to do it if you really want to go see an animal. You should go on a f****** safari and drive through these areas where they're they're killing gazelles and they're doing normal lion s***. This is a normal lion in a lion environment and you drive through it and it's probably dangerous as s*** and [you need to] keep your f****** windows rolled [up]."

A Complete Guide to an African Safari

Many adventurers and environmental lovers desire to go on an African safari. It's an amazing journey as it offers the opportunity to see magnificent animals in their natural habitat, beautiful scenery, and diverse cultural experiences.

An African safari is an intensive experience that can forge a deep connection between you and nature. Africa has some of the most magnificent wildlife mammals that are really rare to see. Planning the right Africa Safari requires proper research to find the right guides. The continent is rich with many species and a wide variety of scenery and natural habitats, from the wide savannas of the Serengeti to the verdant deltas of the Okavango.

Selecting a Safari Location

There are multiple safari locations in Africa; they're all different and have their own unique traits. You can choose African safari according to your preferences and the creatures, views, and landscapes you want to spot. Among the most popular, favored ones are these:

  • Tanzania's Serengeti National Park:

One of the most amazing animal spectacles in the world, the Great Migration, takes place in the Serengeti every year. Exotic wildlife can be easily seen. Over two million zebras, gazelles, and wildebeests travel across the plains yearly for new grazing areas.

The Serengeti is home to the Big Five (elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion, and leopard), making it an excellent place to see these magnificent creatures. Open savannas, riverine forests, and woodlands are among the park's diverse landscapes, home to many animals and complement the vibe itself.

  • Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve:

As a part of the Serengeti ecosystem, the Maasai Mara also is a part of the Great Migration. It is well-known for its spectacular Mara River crossings.

Big cats (lions, leopards, and cheetahs) can be seen quite often in the reserve, offering fantastic chances for up-close encounters and photographs. If you want to witness the migratory range, then visiting this from July to October is the best time. For predator activity, December to February is most suitable. You can see a lot of different beautiful places just by walking safaris or hot air balloon drives and excursions to Maasai settlements.

  • South Africa's Kruger National Park

With well-developed infrastructure, including asphalt roads, Kruger is one of Africa's most accessible parks, making it a good choice if you want to drive by yourself through it. Numerous bird species, wild canines, and the Big Five are among the many wildlife species that can be seen in the park. Through this experience , you can see rare species and learn more about them from experts, like their habits, food choice, food chain explanation, etc.

There are a lot of endangered species that are on the verge of extinction, and you must embrace their existence and beauty by visiting places rich in wildlife.

Kruger offers a range of lodging choices, including affordable campsites, self-catering rest camps, and opulent lodges. This way it will become easier for you to rest and look around Africa’s wildlife. The dry season runs from May to September, and it is considered the best chance to see wildlife. There are several ways to experience it, like night drives, birding, strolling safaris, and game drives. They will help you to catch up to everything that is possible to see during that particular season.

  • Botswana's Okavango Delta

The enormous inland delta known as the Okavango Delta provides a rich and varied habitat for various forms of life. Seasonal flooding changes the terrain and provides experiences on a water-based safari unlike any other. There are different African safaris , and water-based safaris are one of them. With the help of safari experts and safety measures, you can see the beautiful sites in Okavango.

Viewing wildlife from a new angle is possible when exploring the delta's rivers by mokoro (traditional dugout canoe), speedboat, or on foot. With more than 400 bird species, including kingfishers, herons, and African fish eagles, the delta is a birdwatcher's dream. It is a distinctive inland delta that provides excellent birdwatching opportunities and water-based safari experiences.

  • Botswana's Chobe National Park

Chobe is well-known for having a sizable population of elephants, especially around the Chobe River, where herds gather in great quantities during the dry season.

Boat safaris on the Chobe River give exceptional chances to see elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species up close. You can closely see the beauty of the bird species and other endangered species as well. Bird watching is definitely one of the activities that you must try while on Africa safaris. Also, you must know that Chobe is a convenient addition to a trip to Victoria Falls because of its proximity to the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. This way you can have a satisfactory and adventurous trip experience by visiting many places at once.

Safari Types

There are many types of African safaris, and each one of them offers a unique experience. You should know about the safaris better to experience Africa’s beauty in the best way possible.

Game Drives:

In these drives, skilled tour leaders with an in-depth understanding of the region's flora, fauna, and environment will guide you through. It takes place in open-top 4x4 vehicles that provide excellent visibility and access to diverse terrains.

The guides give another insight and improve the educational component of the safari by tracking animals and deciphering their actions.

Walking Safaris:

It is also done by well-trained professionals and armed guides for your protection. The extensive guides include information on tracking methods, wildlife habits, and ecological relationships. This way you learn about biodiversity and how it coexists with nature. During these safaris, importance is given to the more minute details seen in nature, like spoor (animal traces) and flora. Through walking safaris, you can learn in a better way by being up close to nature. Walking safaris are good for learning more about plants and birds (flora and fauna) as you can be close to them and see them first hand.

Boat Safaris:

The water life of Africa is also very mesmerizing, and you should experience it during your visit. The boat safari is the perfect choice for a water wildlife experience and places that have big waters around. It is carried out on lakes, rivers, deltas, including the Okavango Delta and the Chobe River in Botswana. Some of the rarest species of aquatic life can be seen in the rivers and lakes. Perfect for spotting crocodiles and hippos and taking some photos.

Other than the water wildlife, it's common to see elephants and other animals on the shore visiting the lake to drink and take baths. The boat safaris usually range from compact motorboats to huge pontoon boats depending on the amount of people on them.

Safari Accommodations:

While planning your trip and safaris, don’t forget to check the accommodation. It is as important as the experts during your safari drives. Tented campgrounds offer a special fusion of luxury and adventure, giving visitors the excitement of camping in the outdoors without compromising on necessities.

Mobile Camps:

They are usually located in isolated areas, providing a more natural and immersive experience. This allows you to have excellent animal viewing possibilities and lets visitors explore different areas of the safari region. As they are in a mobile area, they are more remote and undiscovered, offering a fully immersive experience.

Low-cost campsites:

Usually found inside or close to national parks, these sites offer basic amenities for guests on a tight budget. Budget campgrounds are more accessible to a wider variety of visitors since they don’t ask you to spend a lot on your accommodation. This way it will be easier to go on African safari with ease.
