Itinerary Announced for England’s Tour of Bangladesh 2023

Itinerary Announced for England’s Tour of Bangladesh 2023

Visitors’ first series in Bangladesh since 2016 comprises three ODIs and three T20 internationals

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the itinerary for England’s tour in 2023 which includes three ODIs and three T20 internationals. The white ball tour marks England’s first visit to Bangladesh after 2016. The tour kicks off with the ODI series with the first two matches taking place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. Chattogram’s Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium (ZACS) will hold the third and final ODI and the first game of the T20 series. The teams will return to Dhaka for the second and third matches at the SBNCS.

England, defending world champions in both formats will arrive on 20 February and play two warm-up fixtures ahead of the ODI series. The ODIs are part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. Both teams have already secured direct qualification for the 2023 World Cup in India.

Bangladesh has only lost one ODI series, 1-2  against England in 2016, out of 14 played at home since November 2014. During this time, Bangladesh has recorded ODI series victories against Zimbabwe, Pakistan, India, South Africa, Afghanistan,  West Indies and Sri Lanka winning 35 out of their 44 matches in the process.

BCB CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury said: “In a World Cup year this series provides a wonderful opportunity for the teams to assess their respective strengths.

“For the fans in Bangladesh and all over the world, the ODIs and T20 internationals offer a mouthwatering prospect. Bangladesh has an outstanding white ball record at home and we all know what a brilliant side England are.”

Clare Connor, ECB Interim Chief Executive Officer, said: “It is exciting that the England Men’s white-ball squad will return to Bangladesh for the first time since 2016. The atmosphere generated in Dhaka and Chattogram for this eagerly-anticipated tour will be fantastic.

“There is a great passion for cricket across Bangladesh, and we expect a tough challenge against a side who have an excellent record in home conditions.”

England's tour of Bangladesh moved from September and October 2021 to March 2023

England were scheduled to play three ODIs and three T20s in Bangladesh in September and October this year; matches have now been moved to March 2023 after mutual decision between ECB and Bangladesh Cricket Board

Tuesday 3 August 2021 10:57, UK

AP Newsroom - Eoin Morgan

England's tour of Bangladesh, originally scheduled for September and October this year, has been moved to March 2023.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board came to the decision "mutually", according to the ECB.

The tour will still include three ODIs and three T20Is, as planned.

Both England and Bangladesh were facing packed calendars and the necessity for teams to stay in restrictive bubbles or contained environments due to Covid has only increased the pressure on international tours.

There is, though, a secondary impact in relation to the Indian Premier League. The lucrative T20 tournament was halted earlier this year and will resume in the United Arab Emirates in September.

England's players were due to miss out on the competition due to the Bangladesh trip but are now more likely to feature for their franchises with a gap opening up.

The ECB will begin discussions around availability with its Indian counterparts, but - as it stands - the IPL play-off and final would still be out of bounds due to a clash with England's planned T20 series in Pakistan.

Root on Stokes: I just want my friend to be OK

England captain Joe Root admits the Test side is simply not the same without Ben Stokes but is more interested in his welfare as a friend rather than a match-winner.

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

PA: Ben Stokes

Stokes has taken an indefinite break from the game to prioritise his mental health and fully recover from a finger injury.

The absence of his star all-rounder and vice-captain severely weakens Root's hand as he looks to get things back on track following defeats in each of England's last two Test series. But, for now, that is not the priority.

"From my point of view, I just want my friend to be OK," said Root.

"I had a conversation with Ben and that's when I found out. The call will stay between the two of us but for me it was hard to see a friend like that.

"Cricket has to be a secondary thought, a long way down the line and he should take as much time as he needs.

"He's got my full support on that, he's been assured he's got the full support of the ECB on that and, certainly, he's got the whole team's support.

"Anyone who knows Ben, he always puts other people in front of himself and now is an opportunity for him to put himself first, to take time to look after himself and get to a good place again.

"Hopefully that can be sooner rather than later."

Brendon McCullum calls for clarity as England remain in the dark over Pakistan series

England remain in the dark over the fate of next month’s Test tour to Pakistan , amid reports construction delays could see the series moved to the United Arab Emirates.

Head coach Brendon McCullum called for clarity as England struggle to plan for a three-match series that is scheduled to start in Multan on October 7, little more than four weeks from now.

Rawalpindi and Karachi are also due to host Tests, but both venues are undergoing renovations ahead of next year’s Champions Trophy.

The Express Tribune, a Pakistani publication, has reported that the series could be moved to either the UAE or Sri Lanka, though it is thought the latter of those locations is unlikely.

One solution could see part of the series played in the UAE and the rest in Multan, which is not down to host Champions Trophy matches.

“We don’t really know,” said McCullum, when asked about the situation at Kia Oval on Thursday ahead of the Third Test against Sri Lanka. “But we can’t pick a team until we know where we’re going to play.

“It would be nice if over the next couple of days, we found out. And then we’ll sit down and make sure we’ve got the right team for the right conditions and the right opposition.”

Karachi was scheduled to host the Second Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh earlier this week, but the match was moved to Rawalpindi because of the delays.

However, building work is now said to have started in Rawalpindi as well as Pakistan prepares to host what would be its first major ICC event since 1996.

England vs Sri Lanka: Ollie Pope needs strong finish after good start takes worrying dip

The situation is made more farcical by the uncertainty over whether the Champions Trophy will even go ahead in its planned form, given India’s unwillingness to travel to Pakistan because of political tensions between the rivals.

England played two Test series against Pakistan in the UAE during the decade when international cricket was kept away from the country because of security concerns following the 2009 gun attack on Sri Lanka’s players in Lahore.

The Test tour to Pakistan two years ago was England’s first since 2006 and finished in a 3-0 series win.
