Explorer: Journey to Europa

Watch Explorer: Journey to Europa

Explorer: Journey to Europa is a fascinating documentary that takes viewers on a journey to Europa, one of Jupiter's moons, which is believed to be one of the most promising places in our solar system to search for signs of life beyond Earth. National Geographic Channel has spared no expense in bringing stunning visuals, insightful scientific commentary, and expert interviews that offer a comprehensive overview of Europa and its importance to our search for extraterrestrial life.

The documentary explores the intriguing history of Europa's discovery and how it became a prime target for astrobiologists. Viewers will learn about the many missions that NASA has launched to explore Europa in the past, including the Galileo spacecraft, which provided the first tangible evidence of a subsurface ocean beneath Europa's icy crust. The documentary explains the importance of the ocean and why it makes Europa such an exciting target for astrobiologists.

With cutting-edge special effects, the show takes viewers on a virtual tour of Europa's icy landscape and its many geological features, including frozen ridges, fissures, and valleys that hint at a dynamic and active geology. Through computer simulations and animation, the documentary shows how scientists believe the ocean's tides interact with Europa's icy shell, causing strange and mysterious phenomena, such as cryovolcanoes and plumes that shoot water into space.

The documentary also explores the challenges scientists face in exploring Europa, including the harsh radiation environment around Jupiter, which poses a risk to spacecraft and human health. Viewers will learn how NASA and other space agencies are tackling these challenges, such as developing new radiation shielding materials and building autonomous spacecraft that can navigate and explore Europa's terrain without human intervention.

The show features interviews with leading scientists, including Robert Pappalardo, a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Kevin Hand, a planetary scientist at the California Institute of Technology, who share their insights on what makes Europa such a compelling target for astrobiology research. They also discuss the latest developments in the field, such as the upcoming Europa Clipper mission, which will provide the most detailed images and measurements of Europa to date.

Throughout the documentary, viewers are treated to stunning visuals captured by spacecraft and telescopes, including high-definition images of Europa's icy surface, as well as computer-generated visualizations of the moon's interior and the dynamics of its ocean. The show also features beautiful background music that adds to the sense of wonder and awe inspired by the alien world depicted on the screen.

In conclusion, Explorer: Journey to Europa is a must-watch for anyone interested in space exploration, astrobiology, and the search for extraterrestrial life. The documentary offers a comprehensive overview of Europa, its geological and astrobiological features, and the latest developments in exploration technology that will help us unlock the secrets of this icy world. With stunning visuals and insightful commentary, this documentary is both informative and entertaining, and it will leave viewers inspired by the awe-inspiring possibilities that lie beyond our world.

Part 1: Journey to Europa A spacecraft lands on Europa, Jupiter’s icy moon, in temperatures of minus 260 degrees and searing radiation. Its mission: to penetrate the surface and send a probe into a watery realm beneath the ice. Meet Bill Stone, a preeminent underwater cave explorer and inventor who is developing robots to carry out that mission one day. Now, he and his team hope to test an autonomous underwater vehicle called Endurance in Antarctica’s icy waters. As we watch Endurance plunge into the depths, CGI animation helps us envision how its descendant would fare on a real mission to Europa. We see it hurtle across the solar system, finally dropping slowly into Europa’s liquid realm, where we follow it through its routines. Getting a robot through the ice and into the oceans of Europa will be an order of magnitude more difficult than anything Stone’s team has done so far.

Explora Journeys CEO on Reshaping the Luxury Cruise Industry

Michael Ungerer is on a mission to create a sustainable future for large-scale ocean voyaging.

By Kim Ayling

explora journeys cruise ship

Having been brought up in the mountains of Austria, it seems odd that Michael Ungerer should say that the ocean is in his DNA. However, as the CEO of the newly launched luxury cruise line with a difference, Explora Journeys, the claim does seem to have some merit.

Personally appointed by the Aponte Vago family – which has some 300 years of maritime history behind it and operates the largest commercial shipping company in the world, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) – Ungerer is an undeniable industry veteran, having worked with luxury cruise companies around the globe for almost his whole career.

Set to launch its first journey in 2023 with plenty more already announced, Explora Journeys was what Ungerer describes as a white piece of paper when he came on board, despite the towering influence of its parent company.

“This was an opportunity to start something completely new: a blank piece of paper in the luxury hospitality space, by a family-owned company. It ticked all my boxes,” he says. “The vision is a new style of transformative ocean journeys that inspire exploration and are delivered with a sense of being cosmopolitan but also refined and relaxed.”

The customer runs at the heart of the new cruise line, with the initial planning processes including inviting some 20,000 guests from the luxury cruise industry to complete a questionnaire on how they want the world of travel to shape up.

“We asked them: ‘what did you always want to do, what isn’t out there today, what do you like, what don’t you like?’” Ungerer explains. “A few themes emerged that were really common worldwide, so [we] put that all together and that is how we built the product.”

According to the responses, one of the biggest luxuries among ultra-high-net-worth travelers is time and private space. And so, in response, Explora Journeys offers space in abundance. Despite having a comparatively small length of 813 ft, the maiden EXPLORA I vessel is awash with space, with 461 Ocean Suites (including one Owner’s Suite), all of which have their own private terrace and walk-in closets.

Aside from guest accommodation, the ship will also have ten bars and lounges, nine distinct dining experiences, a casino, an art gallery, four swimming pools (three outdoor, one indoor) and 64 private cabanas. Guests asked for space, and Explora Journeys is preparing to give it to them.

“Our guests also have a craving or longing for authenticity and for learning something new,” Ungerer adds. And so, each trip has been carefully curated to provide unrivaled experiences, both in far-flung corners of the world and more familiar destinations.

The recently announced Alaska voyage, for example, starts in Vancouver before weaving its way north along the dramatic Alaskan coastline, stopping to witness staggering glaciers, epic wildlife and rugged mountain ranges. Explora Journeys has crafted its itineraries – and indeed its ships – to ensure guests get the most out of each destination.

“With smaller ships like ours, you can go longer and you can go deeper, and you can avoid going to those key ports where everyone else is,” Ungerer explains. “And that way you avoid the crowds and you are also able to give back more and go to smaller communities, in smaller groups.”

A lot of the journeys that Explora Journeys has planned so far will be open-tour, meaning they start at one destination and conclude in another, which will allow guests to book-end their trips. With half of the guests who have already booked making the most of this option, it’s clear that Explora Journeys has tapped into what its customers want. “Eventually, guests will be able to travel all the way around the world with us, non-stop,” Ungerer claims.

So incomparable are these planned journeys that Ungerer is starting to move away from the idea of being a cruise line altogether: “We’re not in the business of selling cruises, we take the discerning traveler on a journey.”

Of course, as a new cruise line (if we are to call it that) taking up yet more ocean real estate, Explora Journeys has a moral responsibility to act in a way that puts the planet first.

While many organizations might cite being part of a wider, and much bigger parent company as reasoning for not living up to sustainability standards, in Explora Journey’s case, this is playing to its favor. “[The Aponte Vago] family don’t think quarter to quarter, they don’t have to think about shareholders, they just think about generational things,” Ungerer explains.

explora cruise ship indoor pool

EXPLORA I will feature three outdoor pools and one indoor / ©Explora Journeys

“It all goes back to Mr. Aponte, who keeps saying that we have to leave the oceans and the world in a better place than what we found them for the next generation, that’s his mantra and he carries that across all his businesses. It’s in the [family’s] foundations – sustainability is core to them,” Ungerer says.

As well as a longstanding desire from the business to act responsibly, Ungerer is convinced it’s what the consumer wants to see, too. “There is a sense of personal legacy and mindful decision making,” he says. “People are bothered about who they give their money to and what they are going to do with it and whether they can trust them.”

In this vein, Explora Journeys has primed its fleet to adapt to new, green power solutions as and when they are available. Earlier this month, the brand claimed an industry first when it announced that two of its six initial vessels will be hydrogen-powered, as well as changing the design of two more ships, EXPLORA III and EXPLORA IV, to accommodate clean-burning LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) fuel.

explora journeys cruise ship lobby

Space is in abundance onboard / ©Explora Journeys

As is often the case with worthy endeavors, the process wasn’t easy, with Explora Journeys having to halt and rethink construction on EXPLORA III and EXPLORA IV to make space for the new technology.  “It’s been a long process,” Ungerer says. “It’s very uncommon to order the ships, start construction and then after, take a step back and relook at it.”

As a result of this re-assessment, both EXPLORA III and EXPLORA IV will now be 62 ft longer, with an additional cost of €120m (approx. $123m) each and postponed launch dates of 2026 and 2028.

This environmental responsibility finds its way into the guest experience, too. There will be no single-use plastic onboard any Explora Journeys ship, and each vessel will have representatives from MSC’s charitable arm – the MSC Foundation – on board who will share details on its vital emergency relief, community support and conservation projects. “In the luxury space, there is demand for not just having a sustainability agenda but also to really have proof within the holiday itself,” Ungerer explains.

Given that Explora Journeys is yet to launch its first journey, it is impossible for us to conclude that it has changed the face of cruising quite yet. But, if everything it has planned comes to fruition over the course of the next few years, it might just be on its way.

Strength through struggle: my graduate school journey.

Life often throws unexpected challenges our way, testing our resilience and determination. For me, this curveball came in the form of urgent spinal surgery.

Christy Kay

Published August 9, 2024

explorer journey to europa

Let me start by noting that I now better appreciate the true satisfaction of success after experiencing the depths of despair. But after all, without hardships, there are no stories worth sharing. Here is a little view into my story…

Life often throws unexpected challenges our way, testing our resilience and determination. For me, this curveball came in the form of urgent spinal surgery. I had completed the first term of the Master of Quantitative Management: Business Analytics (MSQM: BA) program and nearly finished with term two ( out of a five-term program ). As I was preparing for term two exams, I received a chronic diagnosis and I needed immediate surgery. The journey that followed was one of immense struggle, unwavering help from my support system, and a fierce commitment to improving myself.

The Diagnosis and Surgery

During my second term, I began experiencing severe neck pain that extended down my left arm, which I initially brushed off as stress related. My husband is a police officer, and I have two teenage girls in high school ( Need I say more? LOL) .

An x-ray showing the results of an urgent spinal procedure

However, the pain escalated to an unbearable level, and I was losing the ability to use my arm. After several medical consultations, I was diagnosed with a condition that required urgent spinal surgery. The news was devastating and could not have come at a worse time. The day I met with the neurosurgeon, he wanted to schedule surgery immediately for the next day. He described how I had a 63% spinal cord/nerve compression and needed two bone transplants to remove the pressure on my spinal cord.

As I began to explain to him that I could not have surgery the next day because I was preparing for final exams, he interrupted and said, “I don’t think you understand, if we don’t get this pressure off your spinal cord, you may lose the ability to walk.” My response was, “I don’t think you understand, I have to complete my final exams and my final team project.”

OK, OK, looking back, I was in shock and probably did not understand the severity of what he was trying to portray to me. He agreed to give me one week, under the condition that I “ not ride in a car ” and “ not go up or down stairs ”. Five days later, as I lay in a hospital bed, I was faced with the daunting possibility of putting my degree on hold, a decision that weighed heavily on my mind.

The Recovery and Support

The surgery went well, but the recovery process has been the hardest experience of my lifetime. The pain post-surgery was agonizing, and there were days when even getting out of bed felt like an insurmountable task. This situation challenged me in every aspect of my life — physically, mentally, and emotionally. However, this period also revealed the incredible love of those around me. Their confidence in me to overcome this obstacle gave me the strength to keep going when I wanted to quit.

My family was the unsung hero of my support system, not the most glamorous type of support but the most humbling to receive. They were my safety net, reliable and loyal, and unintimidated by this tough situation.

Christy Kay, an MSQM: BA student at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, with her husband on the floor of Cameron Indoor Stadium

My employer (SAS) and management team supported me in ways I could not have asked for or imagined. I was amazed at how small practical gestures relieved my stress. Their actions made sure that I could attend to my health suitably, leaving me feeling positively impacted through influence. A great leader leads, and they lead by example.

My team( s ) at Duke, provided motivational support and knew when to push me to work harder and when to make me take a break from team assignment marathons. They were capable of kindness and tough love. Some of these people are now my “besties” who know me deeply, both the good and the bad, and I know they are only a phone call or text message away.

I have made lifelong friendships.

Christy Kay and three of her MSQM classmates at The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University

Academic Challenges

This master’s program is demanding, especially with the heavy emphasis on quantitative analytics. This field encompasses a variety of techniques and tools designed to understand, interpret, and predict patterns and trends within data. Conversely, I could have never predicted what was about to come my way.

Mentally, the constant fatigue and cognitive strain make it difficult to focus on my studies. Emotionally, I face overwhelming stress and fear about my health and future, all of which tests my determination daily. The hours required to complete assignments are extensive, demanding a significant amount of time and effort. Balancing this workload alongside life sometimes seems intimidating. However, the support from professors and staff is exceptional . They are considerate of my situation and provide the necessary support to help me stay on track. Their empathy and flexibility have made a significant difference in my ability to continue.

Christy Kay and Amanda Laird, a program director for the MSQM programs at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business

The Decision to Continue

Deciding to continue with graduate school after the surgery was not easy. There were/are times of self-doubt and fear of not being able to keep up with the rigorous demands of the coursework . Yet, my passion for education and the unwavering support have fueled my determination.

One of my primary motivations throughout this challenging journey has been to set a positive example for my daughters. I want them to see firsthand that with fortitude, devotion, and hard work, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve our goals. Each step forward has been a testament to the power of believing in yourself. I hope that by witnessing my commitment and the refusal to give up despite the hardships, my children will understand ( as I have told them many times ), that they too can accomplish anything they set their minds to, no matter how frightening it may seem.

Moving Forward

As I move into the final two terms, the path ahead will still be arduous, but I am growing stronger every day. The pain is still very present, but it is my reality for now and I am hopeful that time does truly heal all things. The sense of accomplishment from completing each assignment keeps me going as I know I’m one step closer.

Without hardship, we are not given the chance to rise to our full potential. Continuing graduate school after major surgery was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever made and really tested my limits. The journey is far from over, but with the incredible support of my family, friends, coworkers, teammates, and the academic community , I will persevere. I am proud of how far I’ve come and excited for what the future holds. This experience has helped me grow, reinforcing the belief that with the right support and mindset, we can overcome any challenge life throws our way.

The MSQM: BA Class of 2025 at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business

I’ll close with a quote that came to me in one of my darkest days: “It’s hard to recognize it while we are in the process of overcoming our hardships, but if success is all that you have ever known, you can never truly appreciate it the way that you can when it is earned through perseverance, constitution of character, and discipline.“

Veuve Clicquot Solaire Journeys on Venice Simplon Orient Express

Veuve Clicquot has created three of the most decadent journeys you can imagine on Belmond Trains . Solaire Journeys (a name inspired by the signature sunburst yellow color of Veuve Clicquot labels) follow the sun on three continents, from East to West, accompanied by some of the world’s best champagne and gastronomy. Unique and rare champagnes are paired with food overseen by Jean Imbert (of Michelin-starred Plaza Athénée ) for the ultimate tasting journeys. Two of the journeys have already left the station (the Eastern & Oriental from Singapore and the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express from Paris) but this autumn, you can join the third, champagne-fuelled excursion on board the Andean Explorer from Machu Picchu, Peru.

The First Journey in 1883

The first Orient Express, 1883

The first journey of the world’s most famous long distance train service, Express d'Orient, was from Paris to Vienna, on 5 June 1883. Belgian company Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits ran the service until 2009 with various routes and expansions through Europe. The service quickly became emblematic of luxury and intrigue in rail travel, even more so after Agatha Christie’s fictional detective Hercule Poirot traveled from Istanbul on the Simplon Orient Express in her 1934 novel Murder on the Orient Express .

Dining car on Venice Simplon Orient Express

In 1919, the classic midnight blue cars of the first Simplon-Orient-Express train, that you still see today, were introduced, as it connected Paris to Istanbul via Milan and Venice for the first time. This route, establishing a new path through the Alps, went through the Simplon Tunnel, a technological marvel which at nearly 20 kilometers was the longest railway tunnel in the world until 1982 when Japan’s Daishimizu Tunnel opened.

A grand suite on Venice Simplon Orient Express

If, like most people, an “Orient Express” journey is high on your bucket list, it is possible to take the iconic Paris to Istanbul journey today on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express (VSOE), owned by Belmond . Traveling through seven countries, the five day Istanbul route is offered twice a year from £17,500 per passenger. If this is out of your budget range, there are shorter, less expensive routes throughout Europe each year including Vienna to Paris (1-night journey) from £4,275 per passenger.

Venice Simplon Orient Express

The VSOE train, made of restored 1920s and 1930s carriages, is just as opulent and gorgeous as you’d imagine and transports you back to a more elegant age of travel. The interiors feature plush upholstered seats, polished wood paneling and ornate fixtures. The blue dining car 4141, built in 1929, was decorated by René Lalique in the ''Côte d'Azur" style. The French designer’s Art Deco glass panels with Bacchanalian maidens are still on both mahogany sides of the car. Monsieur Lalique was also responsible for the design of some of the chairs and the Tulip lamps throughout the train.

The bar car with grand piano

As the longest passenger train in Europe, the VSOE has 17 carriages, including 11 sleeping cars with 6 Grand suites, 8 suites and 40 cabins, 3 restaurant cars, 1 bar car, and 2 staff cars. The sleeper carriages have three levels of accommodation available: Grand Suites, Suites and Historic Cabins. And from 2025, even more opulent, the private carriage "L'Observatoire" is scheduled to be added.

Overnight From Vienna to Paris

The chalk cellars of Veuve Clicquot champagne, Reims

A one night trip between Vienna and Paris via Budapest or Prague is a regularly scheduled route and will give you the desired bucket list experience. Last month, Veuve Clicquot’s special Solaire journey traveled from Vienna via Reims when guests were able to visit the famous UNESCO-listed crayères (chalk cellars) where “la grande dame de la Champagne” Madame Clicquot created the world’s first known vintage champagne in 1810 as well as the first blended rosé champagne.

Lunch in the Veuve Clicquot cellars was a four-handed virtuoso performance from Chefs Jean Imbert and Mory Sacko (of Paris’s Michelin-starred Mosuke ) who each created the same dish of every course in completely different ways.

Veuve Clicquot

You can never be overdressed on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express with black tie de rigueur. Before embarking on the train in Vienna, guests had a tour of the art collection of the private Palais Liechtenstein (including an entire room of rarely seen paintings by Reubens) and dinner by award-winning Austrian chef Andreas Döllerer . The tasting menu was paired with rare Veuve Clicquot vintages served in magnum: Cave Privée 1998, Cave Privée Rosé 1998, Cave Privée 1985 and Cave Privée Rosé 1985, each chosen by Veuve Clicquot’s cellar master Didier Mariotti who will also be on the Solaire Andean journey in Peru.

Accommodation

Stewards demonstrating suite on Venice Simplon Orient Express

Even the entry level cabins on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express are luxurious, with rich woodwork and comfortable seating that converts into beds with fine linens. Next level up are suites with sofas that become double beds and ensuite bathrooms with lovely tiling, petite showers and air conditioning. The height of luxury are the Grand suites which have a surprising amount of space for a train, including a separate lounge and dining area.

Dining and Drinking

You’re spoiled for choice with three equally gorgeous dining cars. L'Oriental (built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company in 1927) features an exotic Eastern design with lacquered panels, plush seating and intricate marquetry. Etoile du Nord (built in 1926) has a more contemporary style while my favorite in blue velvet, the Côte d’Azur (1929) has the Lalique glass panels mentioned above.

Chef Jean Imbert's cheese course on the Venice Simplon Orient Express

“To be written into the story of the legendary Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is a childhood dream come true. I genuinely feel as though the stars have aligned for me to have this once in a lifetime opportunity, and I am looking forward to sharing my deep passion for the train, through food, with our guests in this season and for years to come,” says Jean Imbert, Chef, Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Chef Imbert chooses ingredients sourced from local farmers and producers: from breakfast served in the comfort of guests’ own cabin, to lunch, afternoon tea, canapés during aperitivo hour in 3674 Bar Car, the social heart of the train, and dinner. Superb ingredients aside, the Chef and his team also deserve major kudos for producing Michelin-level food in the train’s tiny kitchen.

The Journey and Experience

When you’re not relaxing in your own cabin and taking in the lovely scenery, before or after meals, passengers can enjoy the congenial atmosphere of the opulent Bar Car. The Veuve Clicquot Solaire journeys offer free flowing champagne plus singers, musicians and cabaret performers gathered around, believe it or not, a grand piano. How the Burlesque dancers manage to look graceful with their high kicks between the narrow aisles is the real unsolveable mystery.

All Aboard The Andean Explorer

Llama in front of ancient inca town of Machu Picchu

The final Veuve Clicquot Solaire trip in October this year will be in Peru, starting with the first night in Cusco at Palacio Nazarenas. A city tour and champagne paired dinner in the gilded chapel of sister hotel Monasterio will complete the first part of the trip.

Veuve Clicquot x Belmond - Solaire Journey in Peru

Day two will be a journey to the famed Inca citadel of Machu Picchu on board the Hiram Bingham, a Belmond train. Peruvian lunch and later dinner with rare Veuve Clicquot vintages will be served with on-board entertainment. After a second night in Cusco, you’ll board the Andean Explorer and settle into your cabin to admire the views including the stunning La Raya mountain range. Another highlight of the trip will be a sunrise experience at Lake Titicaca, before you take a traditional boat ride to the islands of the Uros, extraordinary artificial islands created from carefully woven reeds. The next day, the 8000-year-old Sumbay caves, and the breathtaking scenery of Lake Lagunillas, are sure to leave a lasting impression before the train alights in Arequipa.

Practicalities

A suite on the Venice Simplon Orient Express

The next departure of the Venice Simplon Orient-Express from Paris to Istanbul is 23 August 2024, with prices starting at £17,500 per passenger.

The next Veuve Clicquot Solaire journey is 21-26 October 2024. Cusco to Arequipa and Machu Picchu on the Hiram Bingham, A Belmond Train and Andean Explorer, A Belmond Train is from US$15,000 per person.

The impact of European Union Deforestation Regulation: Four lessons from Peru's Journey

Bledi celiku, guillermo arenas, miguel ángel garcía paz, roberto echandi.

Cocoa beans holded in a pair of hands.

Time is running short. Starting on December 30, the European Union (EU) will impose new environmental requirements on imports of coffee, cocoa, palm oil, soy, beef, wood, and some derived products—many of them originating in low- and middle-income countries.   The Deforestation Regulation is part of a broader EU effort to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss, and other countries are considering similar measures.

The regulation requires EU-based importers to provide detailed documentation, such as geolocation data, to show that a product did not originate from land deforested after 2020 and that it was produced in accordance with local laws. In practice, much of the burden will be passed on to farmers, manufacturers, and exporters in countries where the affected commodities are produced.

World Bank research shows that the EU Deforestation Regulation’s impact on exports of low- and middle-income countries is likely to be significant. Up to 22 percent of Latin America’s exports to the EU—or 2.3 percent of its total exports —could be affected.

Developing country governments and firms – particularly small and medium-sized ones – need technical and financial assistance to comply with the regulation. In Peru, where exports of affected commodities including coffee, cocoa, wood, and palm oil comprise about 12 percent of total shipments to the EU, a World Bank team worked with the government to craft a roadmap to ensure adherence to the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), identifying key compliance gaps in Peru’s supply chains.

The experience offers four lessons for other countries:

1. Coordinate among stakeholders

Effective coordination among public and private stakeholders in both exporting and importing countries is vital. The EUDR's extensive scope necessitates collaboration across governmental ministries overseeing the environment, agriculture, and foreign trade. Partnering with local governments, who play an important role providing information and assistance to small producers, is also key. The private sector, especially in fragmented production chains with many small producers, requires swift and practical support from both international buyers and governments to geolocate areas of production, implement traceability systems, and verify that local laws were observed. Private-sector involvement is crucial in devising solutions and sharing responsibility for compliance, because exporters will have to furnish much of the required data on geolocation, traceability, and compliance with domestic laws.

International cooperation is also essential. Various international organizations like the World Bank, FAO, and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) are developing tools that aid EUDR compliance. They can also facilitate the dialogue between national and international stakeholders related to the regulation, as well as share best practices and lessons learned from other regions. Coordinating with these institutions can create synergies, amplify their impact, and enhance capacity building among all stakeholders.

2. Act with urgency and pragmatism

With the December 2024 deadline looming, it is paramount to act urgently and pragmatically, differentiating between short- and medium-term priorities. Immediate action is needed to prevent export disruptions and ensure that as many commodities as possible meet EUDR standards. That means identifying key firms with significant EU export shipments, mapping their chains, and supporting their compliance efforts .  It will be necessary to leverage existing initiatives on traceability, geolocation, and deforestation-free chains, including digital platforms from international organizations or private actors. Producers unable to meet EUDR requirements in the short term may need help finding alternative markets.

Medium-term actions should aim to integrate more producers and exporters into the supply chain, help them adapt to new market conditions, and address structural issues affecting their competitiveness and sustainability, thereby converting the EUDR into a new opportunity to boost export competitiveness by upgrading the environmental standards of exported products.

3. Cultivate trust with EU importers

EU companies importing goods covered by the EUDR bear responsibility for demonstrating compliance with the regulation. Data and documentation provided by governments and exporters in producing countries will need to comply with EU importers requirements, standards, and risk tolerance levels. Such data must be robust, verifiable, and consistent to be trusted by EU importers and submitted to EU authorities to prove compliance. Engaging EU importers early to understand their data and verification needs is critica l.  Moreover, EU importers can also be important allies to producing countries by, for instance, conveying the concerns and difficulties the producing countries are facing in complying with the EUDR to EU authorities.

4. Establish effective communication channels

Countries must establish efficient communication channels and procedures with EU trade authorities to address EUDR-related issues. Whether a particular shipment complies with the EUDR will be determined based on data and documentation from different sources, which may differ in quality and reliability, leaving significant room for discretion in approval by EU authorities. So, it is important for ministries of trade of exporting countries to agree with their EU counterparts on procedures for resolving such problems swiftly. Periodic consultations undertaken under free trade agreements with the EU may provide opportunities to resolve these issues, but it is advisable to discuss and expedite the adoption of specific protocols to resolve issues related to EUDR compliance.

The EU Deforestation Regulation marks a critical step towards reducing global environmental impacts. As countries like Peru navigate the complexities of compliance, learning from this pilot project can better prepare other nations to ensure their exports remain competitive in the EU market. This project was supported by the Umbrella Facility for Trade. The trust fund’s development partners are the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia; the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office of the United Kingdom; the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD); the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands; the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs of Switzerland (SECO), and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

Out of Eden Walk: Northeastern India, by foot

National Geographic Explorer Paul Salopek tells Host Marco Werman about his walk through India’s northeastern region, where he traced the steps of Siddhartha Gautama, better known as the Buddha. He also regales us with tales of a brickyard, where laborers make the building blocks for 21st-century India and of a village where people make everything out of bamboo.

  • By Stephen Snyder

The trail descends into the sun-filled bowl of the Jiri River valley, the remote border between Assam and Manipur. Join the journey at outofedenwalk.org.

The most populous nation on Earth is seeing a building boom. India’s government says the country will be the world’s third-largest construction market by next year, right behind China and the US.

In busy brickyards across northeastern India, workers use naturally occurring clay to make the literal building blocks of 21st-century India.

National Geographic Explorer Paul Salopek learned more about this trade five years ago. He was there as part of his multiyear walking journey along the path of early human migration, the Out of Eden Walk .

Salopek spoke to The World’s host, Marco Werman, about exploring India’s northeast — on foot.
