Savona is the base port of the Costa Crociere. Most of the Mediterranean cruises of this cruise giant start from here. Savona is a small port city with a population of 70,000 inhabitants. The cruise terminal in Savona is very conveniently located - the city center can be reached on foot in 10 minutes, to the railway station 30 minutes on foot. The main inconvenience of this cruise terminal is that there is no international airport in Savona, so you will have to fly to neighboring cities - Genoa (50 km) or Milan (170 km) and then travel by land.

Despite the fact that Genoa is geographically closer, it will most likely be more convenient and cheaper for you to fly to Milan, since there are many more flights there.

How to get from Milan airport to Savona cruise terminal

Arriving at one of the airports in Milan, you will need to get to the central railway station of Milan.

• From Malpensa Airport, this can be done by local train (website , cost 13 euros, travel time 40 minutes) or bus (  cost 10 euros, travel time 1 hour)
• From Bergamo Airport, this can be done by bus carriers ( http://www.terravision.eu , http://autostradale.it , http://orioshuttle.com/ cost from 5 euros)
• From Linate Airport, this can be done by bus carriers ( StarFly , ATM , cost from 5 euros)

Next, you will need to take a direct train to Savona, which runs about 5 times a day. The ticket price at the box office is 19-25 euros, but if you take it in advance (2-4 months in advance) on the website http://www.trenitalia.com , you can buy non-refundable cheap tickets for 9 euros.

Once you reach the Savona railway station, you will only have to drive to the cruise terminal. It can be done:

• by taxi for 15 euros
• on a paid Costa shuttle for 5 euros
• walk for free in 25-30 minutes

As you can see, the road from Milan airport to the Savona cruise port is not the easiest. You can get by with fewer transfers only by taking a cruise company transfer (information below), or by taxi (about 300 euros). Also keep in mind that the road and transfers take a lot of time, so we recommend that you arrive in Milan the day before the cruise. On the day of the cruise, you can only fly if you have booked a direct transfer from the cruise company. In other cases, it is better not to take risks and arrive in advance.

How to get from the port of Savona to Milan airport

The sequence of your actions will be the reverse of what we described above. The only point is to buy tickets for the Savona - Milan train in advance via the Internet, this will allow you to get normal seats. At the end of the cruise in Savona, there will be a lot of people who want to get to Milan, so people who take tickets on a first-come, first-served basis sometimes go standing up. To avoid this, take care of tickets in advance. If you still have a lot of time before your flight from Milan, you can walk around Savona, leaving your luggage in the luggage room at Savona Station. How to get from Genoa Airport to Savona Cruise Terminal

The first step is to get from Genoa Airport to Genoa Central Station. This can be done with Volabus buses. They run from 6 am to midnight. Travel time will be about half an hour, and the fare will be 6 euros. You can also take a taxi.

After that, you can take the train to Savona. They run every 20 minutes, travel time is from 30 minutes to an hour (depending on the train class). Price from 4.10 euros.

Upon arrival in Savona, you can take a taxi to the cruise terminal or walk to it. Also, a paid Costa bus runs between the station and the terminal (5 euros)

Costa Cruise Company Transfers to Savona Port

As we already wrote - Savona is the base port of the Costa Crociere company, so if you go on a cruise from Savona, then most likely with the Costa company. Costa Crociere offers paid transfers from the airports and railway stations of Milan, Genoa and Nice to the terminal in Savona and back. If in your case such a transfer is available, then it is probably worth using it. It will not be the cheapest way, but definitely the most convenient, without transfers. Cruise line transfers must be booked in advance. You can book a transfer from the airport to the port when purchasing a cruise, and a return transfer can be booked directly on the ship.

Estimated cost of transfer from Malpensa airport to Savona terminal - 27 euros. The duration of the trip is 2.5-3 hours. If you are arriving at Bergamo and/or Linate airports, then you will need to first get to Milan Central Station and take a transfer from there.

Tip: if you arrive at Malpensa Airport in the evening the day before the cruise, perhaps the most convenient and cheapest way would be to spend the night in the airport area and leave in the morning with a cruise company transfer. This will allow you to save on tickets to Milan and expensive Milan hotels.

Parking at the port of Savona

Parking at the Savona Cruise Terminal is guarded but open. The cost of parking for 2015 is 12 euros per day. A parking space must be reserved in advance. Reservations can be made by calling the number listed on the website www.parkingsavona.com . You give the car to the staff who take it to the parking lot and return the keys to you after the end of your cruise.

The in November 2019 fully renovated cruise terminal Palacrociere Savona consists of three levels with a 1,200 m² terrace, a total covered area of 8,300 m², of which 4,800 dedicated to passengers (a 3500 m² departure hall, and two mezzanines of a total area of 1,300 m² ) and a 3,500 m² baggage claim section. A covered parking area for buses, taxis and cars is also provided.

Carry-on's are checked by the port authority and not by the cruise ship scanners, therefore soft drinks etc. can be easily carried on board.

The center of Savona is about 300m walking distance over a small bridge, wheelchair friendly.

From Milano Malpensa : direct shuttles to the train station Milano Centrale and from there direct trains to Savona or with a change at Genova Principe train station

By train : From Milan, Turin, Venice, Rome and Genoa: all the trains directed to Ventimiglia, Imperia and Savona, From Nice (Nizza) and Ventimiglia: all the trains directed to Milan, Turin, Venice, Rome, Genoa and Savona. Make sure you validate your train ticket at the validating machines before boarding your train.

By car: The cruisers who leave from Savona have at their disposal a wide parking area (special rate for guests of Costa Cruises), information, services and a maritime station which is comfortable and functional. For guests of the Costa Cruises: From the Genova Porta Principe train station you can use a private bus transfer service from 1:30 pm, which should be booked in advance through your travel agent. Note: If no reservations have been made, this service will not be available.

Tip: if you are planning an overnight in Savona, you may like to stay at the pretty village of Spotorno, west of Savona, and easy to be reached by bus or taxi.

Savona 's Medieval historic center is clearly Ligurian in its layout, complete with carruggi and houses within towers. Its buildings are of great historical importance not least for their architecture: the State Archives house the first document written in the Ligurian vernacular (the Dichiarazione di Paxia, 1178-1182).

Above the old town is the huge Priamàr fortress, built in 1528 by the Genoese as a sign of their superiority over the defeated Savonese. These days it houses four major museums. La Torretta is a tower built in the 14th century, it is strategically placed at the entrance of the harbor and is nowadays considered the real symbol of the town. Rintocchi e Memorie is a monument to those who died in War World I. It is the main feature of Piazza Mameli. A tradition, unique in Italy, is renewed every day at 6 pm hen the bell chimes 21 times and everybody is expected to stop and remember all those died in the war. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption was built under the direction of B. Sormano between 1589 and 1605 to replace the old church of St. Francis of 1259. The Piazza del Brandale is the heart of the old town. The palace from which the Aldermen ruled the town is located in the square. Inside there are sculptures, paintings and frescoes.

Its not all seafood at Savona. The hills are so close and the countryside so rich that mountain cooking has infiltrated the local cuisine. 'Tripe in broth' might not be what you are looking for but it was traditionally the lunch preferred by hungry fishermen and the port workers. The meat may have come from the Piemontese breed of cows who do well in the rugged slopes. Fruits of the forest such as mushrooms, chestnuts and truffles also feature in local cooking, as does asparagus and artichokes cultivated along the coast at Albenga.

Traditionally, everything except bars and restaurants closes on Sunday, though most towns have a pasticceria open in the mornings, while in large cities and tourist areas, Sunday opening is becoming more common. Most bookstores are open on Sunday in Savona.

Anyone else traveling from Savona to Genoa Airport on the 17th April 2016 to catch flight BA 2689 to Gatwick new departure time of 11.45.Looking to share a taxi or mini bus from cruise port departing at 08.30?

Taxi / shuttle service will be in the region of €100 - €110.

Costa airport transfer leaves about 10:00 arrives about 11:00, pity.

A bit more complicated, but MUCH cheaper: take a taxi from the cruise port to the railway station in Savona and a train to Genoa (Sestri Ponente, aka airport station). The train fare is only 8 Euros for 2 people.

But much longer! The OPer is flying at 11.45 so needs to be at the airport at 10.15 - if the ship docks at 0800 things would be tight! The ship would not want to be late clearing!

It looks like the only ship in Savona on 17th. April, due to arrive at 09:00. The Op should do self disembarkation (carrying own luggage off) don't know if Costa allows it, and have a prebooked limo waiting (don't wait to try and get a taxi in Savona). I would not share a van / taxi, not knowing if the other sharers are dependable.

I personally would not chance it, be worrying all the time on the cruise. Check Nice - Gatwick, several good connections and cheap.

Sestri Ponente is a local suburban railway station, trains from Savona take about 1 hour (stopping at all stations), this is the nearest station tothe Airport but there is no physical connection, being about 3 km away.

We are facing much the same problem for our cruise in March, as our flights from Munich arrive too late in Genoa, the last time we flew in a day earlier and stayed at a hotel near the airport and took the Costa transfer, never again it was chaos and we got on the ship about 45 minutes before sailing. For our March cruise I asked Costa if we could book their transfer for the day before and stay in a hotel in Savona - Costa will not allow it. So we are arranging a Limo service from the airport to Savona, enjoy an afternoon and evening by the sea and get to the terminal early next morning.

Mairi, have you heard anything new about which ship you will be on fro your cruise to Dubai?

It's not right at the airport, but not far. It's considered the airport railway station, though. The name is Sestri Ponente Aeroporto. The Regionale Veloce train takes only 27 minutes from Savona, and only costs €4 per person. Check out lefrecce.it for timetables.

Heard today that I've been switched to neoClassica leaving one day earlier from Savona instead of Venice.

I can't decide on whether to just get a taxi into Genoa and stay overnight at a hotel near the station, or spend the night in Savona. The Gatwick flights used to land just after 2pm so I have time to do either.

I recommend staying in the Best Western Porto Antico in Genoa City Centre - 7 mins direct walk to / from the train station.

You could even squeeze a visit to the Aquarium or one of the Palaces before you head to Savona to embark! :D

Flights booked a while back, when departure was timed at 13.30 but BA have now changed departure to 11.45. We are on the Favolosa arrival time 08.00 at Savona

Thanks for that. I'll bear it in mind as an option for a future cruise, but as this one will be a 23 day one, I'll be too laden with luggage to manage that.

With that long of a cruise, that's probably the better choice. You could also consider a taxi from the airport to the train station or vice versa. BTW I see that you've cruised a lot with MSC. I don't think PMs are possible on here as they are on Tripadvisor?

MSC have a lot of similarities to Costa, maybe a bit more Italian except on sailings out of the US where's they tone it down a bit and adjust for the US market.

Their ships are really beautiful and elegant. Lots of natural wood, marble, polished metals etc colours more understated than say on the Favolosa but that wouldn't be hard! I think the layouts are more open and allow more light. The fleet is certainly much newer than Costa's.

Their onshore service is more chaotic. When it all goes well, it goes well but trying to get detailed information can be a challenge. Their website is quirky at best. They're not good at communicating promptly unless by Facebook.

Most people who enjoy Cosat will enjoy MSC and vice versa.

How long would it take to take a taxi from Savona after our cruise to the Geneoa Airport!

Depending on the day, 35 to 45 minutes, last one took 55 minute during rush hour.

It has never been more than our last cruise which was last Wednesday at 9 15am taking the 55 minutes.

Savona is a major port city on the Italian Riviera (Riviera di Ponente) located close to Genoa . The city covers a total area of approx 66 km2 (25 mi2) and has population over 60,000. Savona is located approx 35 km (22 mi) from Genoa Airport, approx 220 km (135 mi) from Malpensa Airport ( Milano ) and approx 160 km (100 mi) from Nice ( Cote d’Azur, French Riviera ).

As cruise port, Savona is also the primary Mediterranean homeport of Costa Cruises . Regularly scheduled cruiseferries connect Savona to Corsica ( Bastia , Ile Rousse ), mainland Spain ( Barcelona ) and Morocco ( Tangier-Med ).

The city is not flashy, but attracts numerous international tourists with its reach history, unique architecture and long beaches. Most shops don't work between 1-4 pm. City's main attractions include Assunta Cathedral, Cappella Sistina (15th century Chapel with the Mausoleum of Pope Sixtus IV), Nostra Signora di Castello (church), Sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Misericordia, Leon Pancaldo Tower, Brandale Tower, Priamar fortress (16th century), Palazzo Della Rovere, Palazzo Gavotti, Palazzo Delle Piane. Fun fact is that the Italian colonist Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) settled here to record his American voyages' history.

Savona is ranked Italy's 4th largest cruise port by annually handled passengers (1,3 million in 2013). The seaport is adjacent to city's historic downtown and since the Middle Ages its shipping trade is of ultimate importance for Liguria Region's economy.

Daily ferry connections from Savona are provided by the large companies Corsica-Sardinia Ferries (to Corsica) and Grimaldi Lines (to Barcelona and Tangier). Ferries connect to Bastia with 14 weekly crossings, and with 1 crossing per week to Ile Rousse, Barcelona and Tangier.

On December 14, 2018, at Palacrociere Terminal, Costa Cruises and Savona's port authority company (Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority) signed a cruise terminal concession extension through 2044. The event was attended by Paolo Emilio Signorini (port authority's President), Neil Palomba (Costa's President), Giovanni Toti (Liguria Region's President) and Ilaria Caprioglio (Savona's Mayor).

On November 3, 2019, in Port Savona was held the christening ceremony of Costa Smeralda (length 337 m, max capacity 6500 passengers). For the period 2019-2021, the new liner is homeported here for Saturday departures on 7-day itinerary visiting Marseille , Barcelona , Palma , Civitavecchia-Rome and La Spezia .

To accommodate one of the world's largest passenger ships , the Port invested EUR 24 million for the consolidation of Calata delle Vele quay, berth extension and dredging/deepening the seabed in front Palacrociere Terminal (from 9 to 11 m / 36 ft) and the navigation channels (their draft was increased to 10 m/33 ft). These works cost the port authority EUR 19,35M. Costa invested EUR 4,5M into 2 new mooring fingers (to extend the berth). For season 2019, the cruise port was visited 155 times by Costa ships alone. All excavated material (sediment/debris) was used for Terminal Alti Fondali Savona (bulk-cargo facility with total area 40000 m2 / 430,556 ft2, 7 covered docks and quayside depth 30 m / 98 ft). This development project was completed in April 2023.

On November 14, 2019, was officially opened the renovated Calata delle Vele quay and was inaugurated Palacrociere Terminal 1. The ceremony was attended by Ilaria Caprioglio (city's Mayor), Giovanni Toti (Liguria's President), Paolo Emilio Signorini (Port Authority's President) and Neil Palomba (Costa's President).

Savona cruise terminal

Savona cruise port was opened in 2003 and is operated by Costa Crociere . The passenger terminal Palacrociere serves mainly as homeport for cruises and as facilities offer large check-in area and separate baggage handling hall. The 3-storey building (sized 8300 m2 / 89,350 ft2) also provides W-Fi Internet access, bars, cafes, restaurants. The cruise terminal has a huge balcony (sized 1200 m2 / 13,000 ft2) and large covered parking for passenger cars, tour buses and taxis. Parking daily rate is EUR 12 per vehicle.

Palacrociere terminal is within walking distance from downtown (around 300 m / 1000 ft) across a bridge. Close to the terminal is located a train station. In 2008, Costa inaugurated a new quay. Cruise port's current docking capacity is 3 ships simultaneously.

• Priamar Fortress: dates from 1542. It was built by the Genoese and served as a prison for a long time. The Primar fortress is close to Rocca di San Georgio.
• Cappella Sistina: dates from the 1480s. The style of the building is in Rococo and it houses a mausoleum. It was constructed by Pope Sixtus IV. The Cappella Sistina is close to the cathedral.
• Palazzo Della Rovere: an old unfinished palace. It had to serve as a palace, then it had to be university but it still stands unfinished located near the cathedral.
• The Old Towers: the old towers of Savona are five and are in different areas of the city. Those are the ones that survived the attack in the 16th century.
• Church of Nostra Signiora de Castello: the most interesting about this place is its interior. The most popular attraction is the piece of the alter. Its designer is Vincenzo Foppa.
• Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy: located 7 km from Savona cruise port. The place appeared to be the shelter of Our Lady. There is a church that dates from the 1536. The architecture is impressive Baroque. Inside the church is painted by hand over centuries by various artists.
• Christopher Columbus’s House: the house of the famous explorer is some kilometers from Savo cruise port. He spent here many of his young years.
