About The High Kings

The High Kings is an Irish folk group formed in Dublin in 2008. The band consists of Finbarr Clancy, Brian Dunphy, Darren Holden, and Paul O'Brien. As of 2020, the group had released five studio albums, four live albums, two live DVDs, and one greatest hits album. Their first three studio albums appeared at number three or higher on the Billboard world music chart, the first two went platinum in Ireland, and all of their albums charted in Ireland. After the release of their first album, the new group moved from a highly staged format to a more natural performance style. Their third album Friends for Life contains both traditional Irish songs, as well as some original songs. Since the inception of the group, it has toured Ireland, the United States, and Europe on several occasions. Although they sing mostly traditional Irish songs, they are also known to sing arrangements of songs from other genres.

The High Kings - Step It Out World Tour

Irish cult folksters The High Kings have been wowing audiences around the world, filling sold-out concert halls and attracting an ever-growing fan base. Following the resounding success of "The Road Not Taken" tour, the High Kings are delighted to announce the "Step It Out World Tour", which begins in November with six concerts in Germany. Once again The High Kings were spectacular!! The High Kings bring us to a modern, high energy, high talent version of Irish music of era reminiscent of groups like The Clancy Brothers, Dubliners and Wolfe Tones.

The concert has of course, several traditional Irish songs. However, they manage to dig deep to find songs we love, that many groups do not play. And manage to mix them with newer songs that are quickly becoming beloved standards.

This is a group of highly talented musicians who clearly love their craft. The show is upbeat, well done and just plain fun.

The High Kings are a group of four very talented and fun guys who are proud of their Irish heritage. Their songs tell the folk tales of Ireland's history, and their voices share the passion and emotion of the times. They have brilliant harmonies, and each in his own right is a star. They each play a variety of instruments, and give their all in every song. Their concerts have something for everyone...ballads, upbeat roudy songs, accapella tunes, and serious songs of Ireland's pain. The High Kings are not to be missed. You will not be disappointed!

This show, by far, has been the best in a decade.

These guys are awesome on stage and off stage. Their singing is superb, professional and absolutely harmonised.

Each one has their one talent, playing instruments as if it were an extension of their body.

You can't miss listening and watching them on stage. No excuse if they're not close enough to your town. I flew all the way from Argentina to Hamburg, and would do it again.

Honestly, hands down one of if not the best concerts I have ever been too. From the singing to the instrumentals these guys had the Kent Stage clapping and singing along the whole concert. I have been waiting for this concert for a few years now and was definitely worth the wait. Darren, Finbar, George and Brian are the such a great group and would see them again 10/10.

They where very good I had a great night there was few new songs and they where very good and new member Paul O'Brien he was very good I would love meet than again

I don't have insider to the high kings i would like someone to conact with the high kings when they on tour and updates

Third time of seeing them, didn’t feel they were quite as good as before but wouldn’t stop me going to see them again. Perhaps they are getting a little bit tired.

Big show great vocals lots of energy and Irland traditions. It was a good choice to again attend a night of Irish music , artfully shared by talented lads .

High Kings' mix of contemporary and classic Irish folk music is back in Bloomington

It's been a year since the popular Irish folk band the High Kings visited Bloomington-Normal.

This Friday, they're back for a concert at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts, playing classic ballads and up tunes, plus a healthy dose of original songs from the band's 2023 album, The Road Not Taken.

The LP was two years in the making, begun during COVID-19 lockdowns. It is the High King's first all-original album — and turned out to be their highest grossing ever.

On the heels of their 15th anniversary, the quartet [Darren Holden, Finbarr Clancy, Brian Dunphy and Paul O'Brien] accepted pitches from cross-genre collaborators, landing contributions from Irish heavy-hitters like Sharon Corr, Kodaline and The Script, the latter co-writing the album’s catchiest tune, Chasing Rainbows .

“In order to grow the genre, as well as the band, I think you need to stretch out and expand your wings — and just go for it a little bit,” said songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Darren Holden in a phone call. “I don’t think any fans of the band came back and said that’s not really the High Kings. Everybody said this is where we want you to go now.”

A notable American jumped on board, too.

“One of the songs we recorded, it was called Streets of Kinsale ,” Holden said. “It was heard by Steve Perry from Journey in California. He reached out to us from his home in San Diego and asked if he could sing backing vocals on that song.”

The result is a blend that’s mainly High Kings with a splash of Perry’s singular vocal.

Holden said Irish music is “ever evolving,” but the band remains “deeply rooted in where we came from and why we started the band in the first place.”

The “why” is aimed at giving standard Irish folk tunes a contemporary twist , something they hold onto despite spending more time away from Ireland than in it.

“If you're born and brought up there, I don’t think it ever leaves you for one second,” said Holden, who is from Mooncoin, County Kilkenny — and thus by birthright is obligated to cheer for Kilkenny’s hurling team . Holden now keeps a home base in Dublin.

It’s likely no accident the band brings high theatrics to the form — Holden’s career first skyrocketed on Broadway as a lead vocalist Riverdance and later as the Piano Man in Movin’ Out . Add to that the mass appeal of Irish music worldwide, and you get something like the High Kings.

“It’s something in the message of folk music,” he said. “There’s something real in there. People connect to it very easily. It’s every emotion — from happiness to heartbreak — and everything in between. And then, obviously, you have the element of drinking.”
