Land program promotions are per person for guests 1 and 2 for one pre- or post-cruise program only, subject to terms .
Explore prominent landmarks and extraordinary cities that define Spain, many of them World Heritage sites, an experience that will leave you with a deeper historical and cultural perspective of the country.
NOTE: this program ends in Madrid therefore departing flights need to be booked out of the Madrid International Airport. This tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties or for those who use a wheelchair, walker or scooter due to the amount of walking, many steps and cobbled surfaces.
After disembarking the cruise ship in Barcelona, you will enjoy a leisurely and immensely scenic drive to the Poblet Monastery. A 12th-century church stands at the center of this sacred World Heritage site, which features a fortified royal residence. While touring, you will learn about the monks’ lifestyle in the Middle Ages and the mountainous route that connects this Cisterian monastery to two others.
Continuing on to the nearby medieval village of Montblanc, you can expect to see its Gothic churches, the royal palace and the city’s 14th-century stone walls, more than half of which still exist. Free time follows, during which you can explore further. The centrally located Plaza Mayor is a great starting point for shopping and people-watching.
Afterwards, you will settle in for a relaxing drive to Zaragoza, the capital of the province that lies on the Ebro River. Upon arriving, you will check into the NH Collection Gran Hotel de Zaragoza or similar, where the remainder of the day will be at your leisure with dinner on your own.
After breakfast at the hotel, you will spend the next two hours or so exploring Zaragoza, especially the Old Town. Its star attraction is the multi-domed Basilica of Pilar, an important pilgrimage site. According to local legend, the Virgin Mary gave Saint James a pillar made of jasper here and instructed him to build a church on the site. This last version of El Pilar, as it’s known locally, was constructed beginning in the late 17th century.
You will next visit the ancient town of Medinaceli, which in Arabic and means “City on the Hill.” The Romans founded the city and structures from that time still remain, the most famous being a stone arch built in the 2nd century. Other highlights include a 17th-century palace and a Gothic church built even earlier.
Following lunch, you will settle in for a relaxing drive to Madrid, where you will check into the Eurostar Madrid Tower or similar hotel. The remainder of the day will be at your leisure with dinner on your own.
Following breakfast at the hotel, you will depart for Toledo, a city so architecturally rich that Spain has declared it a national monument. UNESCO agreed and designated the historic center a World Heritage site, in part because three religions existed harmoniously here—Christianity, Islam and Judaism.
As you walk through this extraordinary city on the Tagus River, you will get a genuine feel for what life was like here in the Middle Ages. The historic city center is that atmospheric. The Toledo Cathedral is particularly impressive, as it is considered one of Europe’s greatest Gothic buildings. Built over nearly three centuries, starting in 1226, the cathedral contains a spectacular high altar and two painting by El Greco, the famed painter that lived in Toledo.
Another spectacular El Greco painting hangs in the Church of Santo Tomé, while the 13th-century Synagogue of Saint Mary the White is known for its Mudejar-style horseshoe arches. Be sure to notice these elaborately decorated arches as you browse the interior.
Lunch follows, after which you will proceed to Madrid. As an introduction to Spain’s vibrant capital, you will drive past key landmarks before starting an enlightening walking tour in Plaza Mayor. This grand arcaded square in the heart of the city offers wonderful options for shopping and dining nearby, as you may discover during free time.
By late afternoon, you will return to the hotel, where you will spend the evening with dinner on your own.
After breakfast at the hotel, you will drive to Segovia, a World Heritage site perhaps best known for its aqueduct that was probably constructed during the reign of Roman emperor Trajan. Until about 100 years ago, the aqueduct still carried water from the Frio River into Segovia 10 miles away.
The Alcazar is another landmark that is impossible to miss. Construction began in the 12th century and its fabulous fairy-tale style supposedly inspired the design of the Walt Disney castle in part. You will also spend time in Segovia’s walled upper town, whose cathedral is the last Gothic one built in Spain. It stands where Isabella I was proclaimed the Queen of Castile in 1474.
Following lunch in Segovia, you will drive to the 16th-century Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial on the outskirts of Madrid. It too is a World Heritage site and celebrated for its austere appearance, which influenced Spanish architecture for the next half century or so. As you wander through the interior, the guide will describe the building’s illustrious history, including how King Philip II conceived El Escorial as a funerary monument for his father.
After visiting, you will return to the hotel in Madrid, where you will spend the evening with dinner on your own.
Following breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will transfer to the Madrid International Airport based on the departure of your flight. Luggage can be stored at the hotel for guests with flights that depart late in the day.

Churchill Remembered on the Hillsdale College Cruise (1): Yorkshire, 1914
2 june 2019 comments 0 comments.
Shelling Yorkshire, 1914: “Naturally there was much indignation at the failure of the Navy to prevent, or at least to avenge, such an attack upon our shores. What was the Admiralty doing? Were they all asleep?… We had to bear in silence the censures of our countrymen.”
Britain’s East Coast: Churchill Connections, June 1st to 3rd
The 2019 Hillsdale College Cruise around Britain offered a unique opportunity to recall the Churchill saga by passing or visiting key places, starting with English Channel and North Sea venues from Southampton to Yorkshire to Edinburgh. These venues shaped and affected Churchill’s thought and engaged his pen.
In this series of posts we highlight the Yorkshire coast, shelled by Germany in December 1914. Then Scapa Flow and Loch Ewe, where Churchill—First Lord again, twenty-five years later—visited the Grand Fleet in 1939. Finally Portland, from which Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty, sent the entire British fleet to its war station in July 1914. The three locations illustrate and inform on Churchill’s words and actions in defense of liberty.
Southampton (June 1st)
Winston Churchill’s parents met at the Cowes Regatta, Isle of Wight, in 1873. Island venues grand and small include Queen Victoria’s beloved Osborne House ; and the Everest house in Ventnor, where young Winston witnessed the sinking of the Eurydice in 1880. Visitors to the south of England will find several days worth of Churchill exploration on the Isle, and may recall a notable event off Portland in July 1914 (see part 3 in this series).
English Channel and North Sea (June 2nd)
This year marks, with suitable ceremony, the 75th Anniversary of Operation Overlord , the invasion of France, on D-Day , 6 June 1944. On the Hillsdale cruise, one of my lecture topics is the myth that Churchill opposed D-Day. According to one film, his resistance lasted virtually until the ships sailed. This is the sort of nonsense up with which we shall not put.
Farther along we pass the Cinque Ports , Hastings, Rye (New Romney), Hythe, Dover and Sandwich. Churchill held the ancient and honorary title Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports , from 1941 to his death. (His successor was Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother .) Among other things, the Lord Warden was entitled to and responsible for all whales washed up along this section of coast. The prospect quite alarmed Churchill, who thought he might be required to remove the carcasses!
Kent and Norfolk
Folkestone, Kent marked the farthest extent of World War II cross-channel shelling (1943). At nearby Dover Castle Admiral Bertram Ramsay fixed his headquarters for Operation Dynamo, the Dunkirk Evacuation (1940). Broadstairs, Kent, was for a time Field Marshal Montgomery’s headquarters. It was also where little Marigold, the Churchills’ fourth child, died of septicemia at the age of 2 1/2 in 1921.
The Churchills holidayed at Pear Tree Cottage, Overstrand, Norfolk as war clouds gathered in July 1914 . Winston was hastily recalled to London, and soon after sent for his family. Fears rose of a German attack on the Norfolk or Yorkshire coasts. Sure enough, German cruisers shelled Scarborough, Whitby and Hartlepool, spurring Churchill to action (December 1914). To his disappointment, a decisive encounter did not materialize (see below). In January 1915 came another inconclusive naval confrontation, the Battle of the Dogger Bank.
Edinburgh (June 3rd)
Approaching Edinburgh along the coast of East Lothian, we pass Dirleton. Here was the Scottish home of Prime Minister H.H. Asquith, who offered young Winston the Admiralty in 1911. Edinburgh is home to the retired Royal Yacht HMY Britannia , the Scottish National War Museum , and numerous other Churchillian venues.
Leaving Edinburgh is the Firth of Forth fleet anchorage. Here Admiral David Beatty on his flagship watched the proud German High Seas Fleet sail in to anchor and surrender at the end of World War I. Here too, in 1919, the German crews opened their ships’ seacocks and simultaneously scuttled their fleet in a brave act of defiance.
Remembering Yorkshire, December 1914: The Perils of Silence
British Intelligence had known that German ships had sailed from their home ports two days earlier. But the Royal Navy had to patrol 500 miles of coastline, whereas the enemy could strike where it wished. The Germans opted for Yorkshire. Upon hearing of the German action, Churchill despatched a British squadron, led by Admiral Beatty in HMS Lion . As the British arrived, the German ships retired at flank speed for home, avoiding a decisive engagement. In The World Crisis, Churchill regretted how little the public knew. The Admiralty could only issue a vague communiqué….
This morning a German cruiser force made a demonstration upon the Yorkshire coast, in the course of which they shelled Hartlepool, Whitby, and Scarborough. A number of their fastest ships were employed for this purpose, and they remained about an hour on the coast. They were engaged by the patrol vessels on the spot…. Sighted by British vessels, the Germans retired at full speed, and, favoured by the mist, succeeded in making good their escape. The losses on both sides are small, but full reports have not yet been received….
Public Opprobrium
Outrage in Yorkshire fell hard against Churchill, who vowed to force the Germans back out if he had to dig them out “like rats in a hole.” This proved an ill-judged remark. For the entire course of the war, the High Seas Fleet never massed for a climactic battle, near Yorkshire or anywhere else. His enemies often flung Churchill’s words back at him in derision. Later, Churchill expressed his frustration in The World Crisis:
Naturally there was much indignation at the failure of the Navy to prevent, or at least to avenge, such an attack upon our shores. What was the Admiralty doing? Were they all asleep?… We had to bear in silence the censures of our countrymen….
One comfort we had…. The sources of information upon which we relied were trustworthy. Next time we might at least have average visibility. But would there be a next time? … On the other hand, the exultation of Germany at the hated English towns being actually made to feel for the first time the real lash of war might encourage a second attempt. Even the indignation of our own newspapers had a value for this purpose. One could only hope for the best. Meanwhile British naval plans and secrets remained wrapped in impenetrable silence.

Passages trip to Israel returns for the first time since 2019
Hillsdale’s annual Passages Israel trip resumes this winter after being canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Students are invited to apply to visit Israel from Dec. 27 to Jan. 6. The trip has room for only 21 Hillsdale students, rather than the usual 40. Each student must have a passport and a COVID-19 vaccination record to join the trip.
Assistant Professor of Religion Don Westblade, one of the trip’s organizers, said he’s already had students ask him what they need to do to qualify.
“One of the main things we’re looking for is past investment of your life in interest in things in the Middle East,” Westblade said. “So we’re more prone to send somebody who’s studied Middle Eastern history or taken Hebrew or done the Old Testament class or something that shows, ‘I’m really interested in this and I’m not just doing this because I would like a cheap trip.’”
This year’s group will be the sixth the college has taken with Passages Israel. Passages’ mission focuses on bringing “Christian students on life-changing trips to the Holy Land,” according to its website, passagesisrael.org. The itinerary will include lectures from local experts, various representatives of different religious faiths, speakers from the legislature of Israel, and more.
Students will pay $880 out of pocket, and $200 will be returned to them after they complete the pre- and post-trip assignments. Students must arrange their own transportation to the airport where the group will meet and fly to Israel.
Currently, there is no application or deadline, but updated information will be posted in the Student Activities Office newsletter as it is made available.
Professor of History Paul Rahe was one of the organizers for the first Passages trip Hillsdale took.
“The provost called me up. I was one of maybe two faculty members who’d ever been to Israel, and he persuaded me and Don Westblade to sort of pull the thing together,” Rahe said. “I sent an email blast out — ‘chance of a lifetime,’ real hard sales pitch.
Associate Vice President for Curriculum and Professor of English David Whalen, the provost at the time, told Rahe he didn’t expect more than 10 students to apply. Rahe and Westblade received 250 applications.
Rahe said he suspected that after being home for three weeks after Christmas, students would jump at the chance to get away from home before returning to school. Since students are so busy in the summer working, he said, it’s more difficult for them to take 10 days off then.
“My thought was, ‘I bet they’ll jump at this,’ because for our students, this is the perfect time,” Rahe said. “The guy who ran it called me and said, ‘Are you going to be able to fill a bus?’ I said we have 250 applications. He said, ‘Oh, take another bus!’”
Eighty students traveled to Israel that first year, and two faculty or staff members have joined the group each year.
Josiah Leinbach ’20 attended the trip in December 2019 and was impressed by the wisdom faculty had to share on the trip.
“The whole experience was absolutely unmatched,” he said. “You had Dr. Kalthoff and Dr. Bart both giving great devotional insight at the various sites where we went, as well as historical background. Our tour guide was absolutely phenomenal and able to give a whole lot of great light and context across the whole time period.”
Leinbach’s advice for students preparing for the trip is simple: Read the Bible a lot, particularly the Old Testament.
“Really familiarize yourself with the text of the Old Testament narrative, understand the prophets, try and really grapple with those things,” Leinbach said. “Not only will it make so much of the New Testament make sense, but it will also give you a greater appreciation for where you are.”
Associate Professor of English Patricia Bart said she finds the visit to the Garden of Gethsemane the most memorable.
“You spend 45 minutes not saying anything,” Bart said. “You don’t know if it’s the exact place, but it is an olive garden, and it’s right on that hill, so Jesus was there within roughly that vicinity. And you’re actually seeing something like what it would have looked like.”
Bart advised students to make their application essays thoughtful and substantive. GPAs, leadership roles, and involvement on campus will also be taken into consideration.
She also encourages studying some Hebrew before leaving on the trip.
“I strongly urge people to at least dabble in modern Hebrew,” Bart said. “Students can contact me, and I’ll give them all these materials I have and use.”
Bart said she enjoys experiencing the trip with both students she’s had in class and those she’s never met before.
“That’s my first thing that I’ve shared with them. We come back and then they take my classes, so that’s a really nice synergy,” Bart said. “It really speaks to the way in which Hillsdale is a Christian College. We’re very open to each other. Nobody’s forcing anything on anybody, and yet we’re free to be who we are.”

Disparate Impact Thinking Is Destroying Our Civilization

It is urgent that we fight back against disparate impact thinking. As long as racism remains the only allowable explanation for racial disparities, the Left wins, and our civilization will continue to crumble.
An Immigration Crisis Beyond Imagining
Todd Bensman | January 2024
Of the over 7.6 million illegals encountered by Border Patrol since January 2021, the number allowed to stay inside the U.S. is somewhere north of five million. But with the percentage of those allowed to stay now approaching 100 percent, if current trends hold, the total allowed to remain in the U.S. under the Biden administration will reach ten million by next January.
Lessons From the Great Covid Cover-Up
Rand Paul | December 2023
To think that we can prevent future pandemics, even as we continue to seek, catalog, and manipulate dangerous viruses, is the height of hubris. Over the last few years, public health “experts” were wrong about almost everything. If we are to avoid these kinds of catastrophes in the future, we must reform government and rein in out-of-control scientists and their enablers.
Hillsdale’s Mission and the Politics of Freedom
Larry P. Arnn | November 2023
Hillsdale has always been broadly partisan on behalf of freedom. Indeed we are required by the College’s charter document, written in 1844, to offer “sound learning” of the kind needed to preserve the blessings of “civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety in the land.” In the early decades of Hillsdale’s history, that meant opposing slavery. In recent decades, it has meant opposing the centralization of comprehensive power that corrodes our Constitution and undermines our American way of life.

CIA Recruiters no longer focus on the key psychological traits critical to success in the world of spying. They look at academic degrees, existing levels of language proficiency, and increasingly at things like skin color and sexual orientation. We act as if anyone can be taught to conduct espionage—as if this is no longer an arcane craft to be practiced by a select group of unique people.

The Most Important Decision in Life
Bishop Robert Barron | June 2023
2023 COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS The story of Elijah and the priests of Baal is much more than a jingoistic story of “my God is bigger than your god.” It is a rich presentation of the dynamics of true and false worship. The altar erected to Baal stands for all the ways in which we order the infinite longing of our hearts to something less than God. When we do this, the fire never falls, because merely worldly things cannot satisfy our hungry souls.
Thinking Smartly About Climate Change
Bjorn Lomborg | April/May 2023
The annual number of hurricanes that make landfall in the U.S. since 1900 is slightly declining, not increasing. The same is true for major hurricanes (category three and above) hitting the U.S. We see the same thing if we look at world data for total hurricane energy in the satellite era, 1980-2022. In fact, 2022 was the second lowest recorded year. Did you hear that reported anywhere? No, because it doesn’t fit the dominant narrative.
