Australia's T20 tour of India: All you need to know
With Australia's ODI World Cup win over India still fresh, the two sides meet again in the T20 format with the next global event only 195 days away
When does it start?
The ODI World Cup win is still fresh but the cricket machine rolls on, and India host Australia for the first of five T20s beginning Thursday night. The tour will last 11 days with the fifth match played on December 3.
November 23: First T20, Vishakhapatnam
November 26: Second T20, Thiruvananthapuram
November 28: Third T20, Guwahati
December 1: Fourth T20, Raipur
December 3: Fifth T20, Bengaluru
All matches start 12.30am AEDT on the following date
Why is this series relevant?
It's a fair question, coming so hot on the heels of a fantastic 50-over World Cup. And the cheap answer would be to point to Indian cricket's insatiable appetite and the associated TV dollars it brings in. But dig a little deeper and with an ICC event now every 12 months, it is only 195 days until the T20 World Cup starts in June.
That tournament will be held in the Caribbean and the USA and, while there's no denying this series is opportunistic scheduling, it does offer an opportunity for fringe players to stake their claim in the cauldron of international cricket. After all, Australia is only scheduled to play 11 T20s before that World Cup – five here, three against the West Indies at home in February and another three in New Zealand in March.
For the Aussies, this is another chance for a look at the likes of Matt Short, Aaron Hardie and Tanveer Sangha who are all newcomers to international cricket, as well as a notable chance for Steve Smith to press his case as a T20 opener following his Big Bash fireworks last summer.
So it's not a full-strength Aussie side?
No, but you could take a view that actually adds to the appeal for this series. England hung around in Australia for a white-ball series they were thoroughly uninterested in after their T20 World Cup win last year, but this Australia squad has a fresh injection of personnel.
Squad changes from the ODI World Cup Coming in: Matthew Wade (c), Aaron Hardie, Jason Behrendorff, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Tanveer Sangha, Matt Short, Kane Richardson Staying on: Sean Abbott, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa
A host of players including fast bowling trio Pat Cummins, Mitch Starc and Josh Hazlewood have been rested from the series, as have allrounders Mitch Marsh and Cameron Green.
David Warner was initially named in the squad but has been withdrawn, meaning another opportunity for allrounder Aaron Hardie.
From the playing XI that won the ODI World Cup, Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith and Adam Zampa are all included in this squad.
Just how many of those feature in the opening match remains to be seen, with Head in particular having heartily enjoyed the post-match celebrations following his player-of-the-final award for a century in the run chase.
World Cup squad members Sean Abbott and Marcus Stoinis are also staying on for the T20s, as is Tanveer Sangha, who travelled with the World Cup squad as a reserve player.
In addition, coming in fresh are Matthew Wade, who skippers the team, Jason Behrendorff, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Matt Short and Kane Richardson.
Head coach Andrew McDonald also flew home on Wednesday with assistant Andre Borovec to take over for the T20s.
Australia T20 squad: Matthew Wade (c), Aaron Hardie, Jason Behrendorff, Sean Abbott, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa
Hang on, didn't Matthew Wade retire?
Talk of the veteran wicketkeeper's international retirement has been proven premature! Matthew Wade, who himself considered his international career over 12 months ago after the T20 World Cup on home soil, is back to captain Australia.
Wade is in the job on an interim basis only, taking over from Mitch Marsh who captained for three matches in South Africa in August. The Tasmanian has not played international cricket since that T20 World Cup last year.
Australia have been without a permanent T20 captain since Aaron Finch retired in February, and do not appear in any rush to appoint one.
How about the Indians?
Plenty of time to lick their wounds for the beaten Indians with only three of their World Cup squad members included in their 16-player group for this series.
Suryakumar Yadav is the only member of the playing XI from the ODI World Cup final to stay on, and will captain the side. Squad members Ishan Kishan and Prasidh Krishna are also in the group while top-order bat Shreyas Iyer will join them for the final two matches.
Hardik Pandya remains out injured after hurting his ankle trying to stop a drive off his own bowling in India's World Cup game against Bangladesh.
India T20 squad: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar, Shreyas Iyer (last two matches only).
How can I watch?
Fox Cricket and Kayo Sports have exclusive broadcast rights to the tour for Aussie viewers. Kayo's excellent 'Mini' packages and full replays are worth every cent of the subscription fee at times like this. If you're not already onboard with Kayo, get around it here .
How's the time difference?
Honestly, it's not the best for Aussie fans on the east coast. While the World Cup saw the vast majority of games start at 7.30pm, these are shorter T20 matches played entirely in the evening, which means 12.30am start times in Sydney and Melbourne.
Lucky we know a place where you can catch up…
The best way to follow the series?
The cricket.com.au website and CA Live app, of course.
Our team will continue to provide access to the same great live scores and news from the series while still covering everything from the Weber WBBL, Marsh Sheffield Shield and Marsh One-Day Cup as we build into another huge home summer.
Head-to-head
It seems low, but there have only been 27 T20 internationals between Australia and India since the first in 2007. India holds the advantage 15-10 (with one washout, and one abandoned before a ball was bowled).
Of the 10 times they've met in India in this format, the home side has won six of them.
Australia has only won a multi-game T20 series in India once, in February 2019 when Glenn Maxwell starred with 56 and 113no as they won 2-0.
Last time they met
India won a three-game series 2-1 in September last year in a series best remembered for Cameron Green's breakout as a white-ball player. The tall Western Australian scored 61 from 30 and 52 from 21 as an opener in the first and third games of this series, which no doubt helped him land a sweet A$3.15m price at the IPL auction just a few weeks later.
Recent form
Australia underperformed in the T20 World Cup on home soil 12 months ago, and have only played one T20 series since with all the focus leading up to the just-concluded ODI World Cup. The T20s they did play went well – a 3-0 whitewash of the Proteas in South Africa in September.
Mitchell Marsh, who captained the side, was a beast with 186 runs across the three games, while Travis Head put on 115. Tim David and Matt Short both finished with strike rates north of 200.
Sean Abbott claimed eight wickets and had an economy rate of just 7.
But Australia are on a six-game winning streak in the T20 format, beating Sri Lanka, Ireland and Afghanistan in the group stage at last year's T20 World Cup before the South Africa series. You have to go back to 2019 to find a longer win-streak in the format for Australia.

India vs Australia, 3rd T20I - Live Cricket Score, Commentary
What a lovely closely fought series. Some boxes ticked for both teams in their prep for the World Cup. Australia head home to host West Indies and England before the big event. India now travel further down south to Thiruvananthapuram to start their 3-match series against South Africa. The Proteas put on a good show in June to share a 5-match series 2-2. This promises to thrill us too. We will be back with you on Wednesday evening to tell you that story. Goodnight!
Rohit walks up and collects the trophy. He is being joined by his teammates as they pose for the cameras as champions.
Rohit Sharma | India captain : It's a special place. We have had great memories playing for India and when I played for Deccan Chargers as well. Biggest positive was different individuals stepping up and delivering. You feel good about it as a management. Margin of error in T20s is small. We took our chances, we were brave as well. Sometime it doesn't come off. There are areas to improve as well. Not easy coming back after a break against a tough team. They (Bumrah and Harshal) will take some time. Hopefully they can get back into their groove in the next series.
Axar Patel | PoTS : When you do well and the team wins the series, it feels great. I try to back myself with the line and lengths I bowl and even if the batter takes me on I back myself.
Suryakumar Yadav | PoTM: In that situation I thought let me take my chance. I had two three shots in mind but I tried to hit over mid-off only. My mindset is pretty clear. Loving it at No. 4. There will be tough challenge but you got to express yourself and been a little smart as well.
Aaron Finch | Australia captain: Really good series. The way we fought back was fantastic. Really with a young player like Green have such an impact. We had to get wickets, can't beat India by containing. At times we were sloppy with bat and ball, but playing a tight series like this against a World Class side is going to keep the guys in good stead. I loved the way he took the game on with his ultra-aggressive approach.
Kohli (2/2): I kind of made up my mind to go after him (Adam Zampa) today. He's a quality bowler and he tries to control my scoring rate whenever we play and I knew that he was going to attack the stumps, so I was standing outside leg already. Last game I was a bit disappointed that after hitting him for a four, I went for a double rather than hitting him for a six. I'm making a conscious effort to strike those big ones through the middle overs so that it can help the team situation. The game shouldn't have gone on that long, we should have probably had 4 or 5 to chase in the final over. It was important to maintain my composure and get one boundary (on that first-ball six in the 20th over). I'm happy with my contribution to the team, I took a break, went back to the nets, worked hard on my fitness and think it's coming off well. I want to keep contributing and doing my best for the team.
Virat Kohli (1/2): That's why I'm batting at 3, I have to utilise my experience and give the team what the team wants. I got off to a good start then I had to take down Zampa because he's an important bowler through the middle. When Surya started hitting it like that, I kinda looked at the dug-out as well. Rohit and Rahul bhai both told me, 'you can just keep batting on' because Surya was striking it that well. It was just about building a partnership. I just used my experience a little bit. (On SKY) Absolute clarity in what he wants to do. He has the game to bat under any sort of situation and any condition. He has shown that already. He got a hundred in England, he batted beautifully in the Asia Cup. Here, he's striking the ball as well as I have seen him strike. For the past 6 months, he's been outstanding. It's the array of shots and to play those shots at the right time is such a tremendous skill. He's a guy who knows his game inside out. He's got the gift of timing and I was in awe watching him play his shots.

22:35 Local Time, 17:05 GMT, 22:35 IST: Massive smiles in the blue camp as they win the series 2-1. SKY! Gee, what a revelation he has been. And that intent in the partnership with Virat was what sealed the deal for India. Wickets fell, but both batters didn't budge. Their post-powerplay game was top notch as they ensured a boundary almost every over to keep the run rate in check. And with some of his outrageous shots, SKY brought the run rate down in a hurry. Cam Green was Australia's best bowler. Troubled the batters with pace, bounce, forced some mishits, but Australia didn't give him the fourth. Hazlewood broke SKY's stand with Virat and Australia came back a bit but with wickets in hand and hitters left, it was India's game, although they would have wanted to finish this better.
Daniel Sams to Hardik Pandya, FOUR , they were bowling wide yorkers to Hardik almost all series, but Hardik cleverly opened the bat face and sliced this fine with one hand to get it fine and send it to the left of short third man. India get a tight win, the kind of wins Rohit wants his team to get before the World Cup
Daniel Sams to Hardik Pandya, no run, way outside off stump, no called a wide. Brave call from umpire Nitin Menon. He reckons Hardik moved off-side. Precious dot

Jamie Overton back injury hands England T20 World Cup selection dilemma
- Matt Roller Close Matt Roller is an assistant editor at ESPNcricinfo. He tweets at @mroller98 Follow on X
England's selectors face a difficult call over the potential inclusion of Jamie Overton in their T20 World Cup squad after an inconclusive scan left the Surrey allrounder unclear as to the extent of a recent back injury.
ESPNcricinfo revealed this month that Overton was in line for a maiden T20I call-up after making significant strides as a short-format allrounder. Rob Key, England's managing director, has been monitoring his progress since his return from injury last summer and Overton said he felt "close" to selection even before Ben Stokes' withdrawal.
But he was ruled out of Surrey's County Championship fixture against Kent last week with a back issue, and will not feature against Hampshire this week after initial scans returned unclear results. He is due for another scan in two weeks' time after a short period of rest, by which time England will have named their provisional squad to meet the ICC's May 1 deadline.
England's selection panel - which Key chairs - will meet in the next few days to finalise their 15-man squad, which is likely to double-up as the group that faces Pakistan in four T20Is from May 22-30. There are a few details to iron out, with Ben Duckett in contention to be the spare batter and Tom Hartley likely to get the nod as second spinner ahead of Rehan Ahmed .
Jofra Archer is set to be named in the provisional squad and given the chance to prove his fitness against Pakistan, over a year after his most recent international appearance. The uncertainty over Overton's injury may also open the door for Chris Jordan to be recalled. Jordan was left out of the squad that lost 3-2 to West Indies in December but has been a consistent six-hitter in the last 12 months.
The identity of England's wicketkeeper will also be up for discussion, with the ICC's new stop-clock and fielding penalties for slow over-rates making it more challenging for Buttler to captain the side while also keeping wicket. Phil Salt took the gloves in the final two T20Is of England's Caribbean tour in December, while Jonny Bairstow is the other alternative.
The ECB has not yet indicated publicly whether it will allow England players to stay at the IPL for the knockout stages if their franchises qualify, which would rule them out of the first two Pakistan T20Is. Buttler, who has recently scored two unbeaten hundreds for table-topping Rajasthan Royals, is likely to miss the start of the Pakistan series regardless while on paternity leave.
England are expected to name their squad on Tuesday morning. They will have until May 25 - the day of the second T20I against Pakistan - to make changes but will be keen to avoid a repeat of the debacle last year that ensued when Harry Brook was drafted into their 50-over World Cup squad at late notice after his initial omission.
