The luggage weight limit for international flights differs from domestic US weight limits, which can become a problem if you need to switch between domestic and international flights to reach your destination. Carry-on Weight Limits

Carry-on baggage weight limits for international travel differ significantly from domestic carry-on rules. Most domestic flights limit  carry-on suitcases , bags, and backpacks to 35 lbs.

The allowable weight of carry-on luggage differs from airline to airline, but your carry-on luggage generally cannot weigh more than 16 to 18 lbs for international flights. British Airways is an exception and sets its carry-on weight limit at a whopping 51 lbs.

Checked Bags

As with carry-on luggage, there are exceptions to checked luggage weight limits. International flights in the US and European Union set a maximum weight of 70 lbs for checked luggage, although you may have to pay fees if you exceed the 50 lb limit guideline. Size restrictions for international airlines may be expressed in inches or centimeters by height, width, and depth. Alternately, all three measurements are added together to equal a single dimension expressed in linear inches or centimeters. Be aware that most airlines outside of the US will measure bags in centimeters.

Personal Items

Many international airlines don’t have exact size restrictions for personal items. But the most common size limit is 40 inches (102cm) (length, plus width, plus height) or 18 x 14 x 8in (46 x 36 x 20cm). If it can safely fit under the seat in front of you or in the seat back pocket without being a hazard, it’s considered the appropriate size.

This will, however, vary depending on the airline. Smaller planes won’t have as much room under the seats as larger planes. Of course, double-check your chosen airline before you go.

International Carry on

Carry ons for international flights are usually a maximum of 22 inches (55cm) tall, 15 inches (40cm) wide, and 10 inches (25cm) deep. Be aware that this can cause difficulties at the boarding gate, because carry-ons accepted by domestic airlines in the USA are too big for international routes and are likely to be checked at the departure gate. Also note that s ome limits will even vary if you fly between two cities in the same country.

Many airlines also limit how much your carry-on can weigh with the most common maximum weight limit of 22 pounds (10kg). Your luggage might be weighed at the gate, and if it exceeds the requirements, you may have to pay a fee to check it at the gate.

For instance, American Airlines allows passengers two checked bags when flying to or from Japan, South Korea, and China, but only one bag when traveling between the USA and Mexico. Remember to always carry medicine, money, valuable documents, keys, jewelry, cameras and other small fragile items in your carry-on luggage, just in case your baggage is separated from you for a time. And remember to never lock your luggage.

We do not assume liability for unchecked items unless they are given to our personnel for storage during the flight or otherwise delivered into our custody for travel.

Federal regulations require that a cane must be stowed for takeoff and landings in an approved storage compartment. Flexible travel canes, such as those used by customers that are visually impaired, can be stored in the area under passenger seats, as long as the cane doesn't protrude into the aisle or otherwise disturb the crew or other passengers.

Please check your SPAM box and verify the email address that you entered into your Lost Item Report to be sure we have your correct email address.

You will receive an email from Delta’s Lost & Found Central when you file the report for your lost item. If we find an item that matches the description of your lost item, we will send you an email notification with further instructions to allow for confirmation that the item is yours. While we are searching for your lost item we will update you via email throughout the process.

A thorough search will take place for approximately 14 days after we receive the lost item report. If we are unable to find your item, you will receive an email notification informing you that we have been unsuccessful in our efforts.

If we locate an item that matches the description of your lost item, Lost & Found Central will contact you via email and/or phone to verify that the item is yours and arrange for delivery of the item.

Lost & Found Central will provide you with a link to the shipping checkout page. You will be able to verify your shipping information and provide credit card information for shipping charges. 

If you do not have an email address you will be contacted via telephone only if it appears that your item has been located. We cannot provide status updates via telephone.

Military IDs will be sent to the Department of the Navy, NAS-JRB ID Office. This department will then facilitate the return to the various military branches.

Passports will be sent to the U.S. Department of State, CA/PPT/S/L/LE, ATTN: CLASP

All other personal documents that we are unable to return will be destroyed.

We understand that every lost item is very important to each individual, and undergo an exhaustive search to locate every single item reported. Please be assured that we take each Lost Item Report very seriously and will go to every effort to locate and return your lost item(s).

Yes. Although we are conducting an exhaustive search and hope to locate your item, you should immediately deactivate any associated data plans for your own protection. We recommend that you leave call service activated on phones for a period of one week to assist in our search and verification process.

Please provide detailed, accurate descriptions on the Lost Item Report Form. If possible, gather the descriptive information about the item(s) prior to filling out the form and be sure to include any and all identifiable details to help in our search. Please enter the information just as it appears on the item. Also, be sure to include the flight date and flight number reflecting when your item(s) were lost. You may also provide additional information in both the "brief description" field, as well as the "help us find your item" area. Failing to include information in either of these fields will limit our ability to find your item. We also ask that you file your report within 7 days of your item becoming lost. Reports filed after 7 days have a decreased chance of item recovery.

Enjoy one of the most generous baggage allowances in the world. Your free baggage allowance is based on either the total amount of weight or on how many pieces of luggage you have . This is called the weight or piece concept.

The weight concept applies to most routes. The piece concept applies only on flights to and from the Americas and Africa. Your allowance depends on where you’re travelling, your fare, and your travel class.

There are general rules and guidelines for baggage allowance on Emirates flights. To check the baggage rules specific to your journey, and how much extra baggage will cost, visit Manage your booking . If you’re an Emirates Skywards Platinum, Gold, or Silver member, you could also enjoy extra baggage allowance on routes that use the weight concept. When travelling on piece concept routes on Emirates flights only, Emirates Skywards Platinum and Gold members are eligible for 1 additional piece of checked baggage at 23kg per piece in Economy Class and 32kg per piece in Business Class and First Class over the ticketed limit.

Weight concept

Your allowance is based on the total weight of all your baggage.

You can check in as many bags as you like up to the weight allowance for your travel class. Each individual bag must not weigh more than 32kg.

The weight concept applies to all routes, except when you travel to and from the Americas and from Africa (for tickets issued before 9 August 2021).

*30 kg in Economy Saver for journeys originating from Australia and New Zealand for tickets issued on or/after 26 November 2019

*30 kg in Economy Saver for journeys originating from Europe to Australia or New Zealand for tickets issued on or/after 05 July 2024

Checked baggage dimensions for weight concept

The total dimensions (length + width + height) of an individual bag should not exceed 300 cm (118 inches). Bags exceeding this limit will not be accepted as checked in luggage. For travel from Dammam International Airport, an individual bag should not exceed 215 cm (84.64 inches).

Piece concept (the Americas and Africa)

You can check in a certain number of bags, and each bag has a weight allowance. Your allowance depends on your fare or travel class.

The piece concept applies to flights to and from the Americas and flights originating in Africa.

For tickets issued on or after 9 August 2021, the piece concept applies for flights into Africa as well.

Baggage allowances to and from the Americas and Africa (except flights within the Americas and between US and Europe):

* If your journey originates from Africa and your ticket was issued before 11 May 2020, you can check in two pieces of baggage weighing up to 23 kg each in Economy Special.

Baggage allowance for flights within the Americas and between US and Europe:

Travel from Australia, New Zealand, or Asia

If your trip from Australia, New Zealand, or Asia to North or South America includes a sector in Europe or a stopover in Dubai for longer than 24 hours, the weight concept will apply for the entire ticketed journey.

If you are travelling into Africa with a stopover of more than 24 hours, the weight concept may apply.

Checked baggage dimensions for piece concept.

The total dimensions (length + width + height) of each piece must not exceed 150 cm (59 inches).

You’ll be charged an additional fee for any individual items exceeding dimensions of 150 cm (59 inches), up to a maximum of 300 cm (118 inches) or 215 cm (84.64 inches for travel from Dammam International Airport. If an individual item has total dimensions greater than these specifications, it can’t be checked in as baggage and will need to be sent as cargo or freight.

Interline baggage policy

If your travel starts in the United States and the first airline on your booking is not Emirates, different rules may apply .

Interline flights are flights that are on the same ticket as your Emirates flights but are operated by another airline and do not have an Emirates flight number (Emirates flight numbers start with EK). These airlines baggage allowances may be different from Emirates. Prepay for bags and save . Guests are encouraged to prepay for their first and second checked bags online through Manage Trips at any time up to 24 hours before your flight as fees will increase by $10 through self-serve check-in, and a further $10 if paid at the airport with an agent.

When is your first bag free?

First bag fees  are included for  WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard‡  primary cardholders and up to 8 guests on the same booking.

First bag fees are included for EconoFlex, Premium and Business fares and Silver, Gold and Platinum WestJet Rewards members. First bag fees are also included for Econo and Member Exclusive fares to and from Asia. 

Second bag fees are included for Premium and Business guests, as well as Silver, Gold, and Platinum Rewards members

Third bag fees are included for Platinum Rewards members.

Third and fourth checked bags

Travelling with more than 2 checked bags? Checked baggage size and weight limits still apply and fees can only be paid for through online and airport check-in. Allowance and fees will vary based on aircraft type and destination.

Overweight and oversized bags for all fares: $100-$118

Bag fees are charged in Canadian (CAD) or U.S. (USD) dollars, depending on the booking’s country of origin. For flights departing from outside Canada and the U.S., bag fees will be converted and charged in the local currency of the departure country. GST is charged on fees for all itineraries that originate in Canada.

Travelling with or transferring baggage to our airline partners

If you are travelling with one of our airline partners, the baggage policies of the other carrier may apply. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the fees for your journey by visiting our airline partners page. Fees are collected on a one-way basis by the airline operating the first flight for each direction of your journey.

WestJet allows each Econo, Member Exclusive, EconoFlex, Premium, PremiumFlex, Business or BusinessFlex guest to bring one (1) carry-on bag and one (1) personal item.   

Items which do not fit into the sizing device will be placed in checked baggage and applicable baggage fees may be collected.

UltraBasic carry-on baggage allowance: 

WestJet allows each UltraBasic guest to bring one (1) personal item. WestJet does not allow UltraBasic guests to bring or pay for a carry-on bag except in the following cases: 

• UltraBasic guests travelling to and from Europe and Asia are allowed to bring one (1) carry-on bag and one (1) personal item. 
• UltraBasic guests are allowed to bring one (1) carry-on bag and one (1) personal item when Extended Comfort has been purchased for all flights in a single direction, including connections. 

UltraBasic guests who arrive at the gate with a carry-on bag that does not meet an exception listed above will be required to check the bag and will be charged a checked bag fee and a service fee. UltraBasic guests are encouraged to prepay for checked bags online through Manage trips at any time up to 24 hours before your flight to save money.

Personal Medical Devices do not count towards carry-on baggage allowance. Learn more about what items are permitted in addition your fare’s carry-on bag and personal item allowance.

Carry-on baggage and personal item size requirements: 

Personal item

Fits under the seat in front of you.  Maximum size 41 cm x 15 cm x 33 cm (16 in x 6 in x 13 in) 

Carry-on bag

Fits in the overhead bin.  Maximum size 53 cm x 23 cm x 38 cm (21 in x 9 in x 15 in)

 All carry-on and personal items must:

• fit in the sizing device (wheels included – if applicable)
• be light enough to allow you to place the bag in the overhead compartment unaided
• be stored under the seat, and carry-on items should be stored in the overhead compartment on board the aircraft
• be acceptable as carry-on for the country to which you are travelling. Acceptable items vary by country. Visit  catsa.gc.ca  to confirm what you are able to bring before your flight as WestJet is not responsible for items not permitted through security, at your point of departure or upon arrival at your destination
• pass through security. Items such as: shampoo, perfume, toothpaste and moisturizers are only permitted in limited amounts

Consolidation rules: 

• Duty free items must be consolidated with your fare’s carry-on bag and personal item allowance. Duty free is not allowable as an additional baggage item. 
• Personal electronics MUST be placed into a personal item or carry-on bag. 
• Food items may be brought on board for consumption during the flight. Items not consumed will be considered part of your fare’s carry-on bag and personal item allowance.  

When your pet flies WestJet, they're our special guests too. They may ride in the cabin or checked in with their kennel on most domestic and international flights. Details are: 

• A pet kennel fee applies for pets  
• To add your pet to your travel plans, please contact us by phone
• If you do not request space for your pet(s) 48 hours before departure, space may not be available, and you may not be permitted to travel with your pet(s)
• To add a service dog to your travel plans, visit our service dogs page
• Pre-booking is the only way to ensure space is saved on the aircraft for you pet. If you do not prebook, it is possible your pet may not be able to travel

Special items and excess bags

Assistive devices.

One medically required wheelchair, per guest, will be carried at no extra charge. The device must be transported in the cargo compartment.

Braces, crutches, walkers and canes, along with other assistive devices, will also be permitted free of charge.

Child equipment

Lap-held infant.

Two pieces of child/infant equipment (infant restraint system, playpen or stroller) are permitted at no charge and can be checked at the gate as you board. No substitutions, e.g. a wagon or stroller wagon, are permitted.

Fare-paying child/infant

One piece of child/infant equipment (approved restraint system (car seat), playpen or stroller) will be permitted at no charge in addition to the checked baggage allowance for the fare class booked. No substitutions, e.g. a wagon or stroller wagon, are permitted.

WestJet only allows infant and child restraint systems approved by Transport Canada or the Federal Aviation Administration to be used on board the aircraft. For details on non-acceptable and acceptable infant and child restraint systems, please see approved restraint systems (car seats) .

Fishing and hunting equipment

Equipment must meet the requirements for air travel and is subject to restrictions based on your destination.

The maximum length accepted for checked baggage is 9.8 Feet.

If your itinerary includes an international flight operated by one of our partner airlines, you must contact the other airline a minimum of 72 hours in advance of your travel.

Humanitarian aid

WestJet will review requests for one piece of checked baggage containing humanitarian aid (departing Canada) or return of one rescue animal (to Canada) per guest.

Medical equipment and medication

We recommend that whenever your medical equipment fits within the carry-on baggage dimensions you take it as carry-on baggage. Medication should be packed in your personal item.  Although we do not charge a fee for medical equipment, most portable medical devices (PMEDs) must be approved for air travel as they contain batteries which are classified as dangerous goods.

Please review the Medical equipment and medication page well in advance of when you intend to travel to be sure these items arrive safely.

Military bags

WestJet waives checked baggage fee(s)* for active or veteran Canadian military personnel. * Note: To have your checked baggage fee(s) waived, WestJet must be the marketing and operating carrier on the entire journey. Any military personnel travelling for business or personal reasons can do so with a maximum of four bags on WestJet flights and a maximum of three bags on WestJet Encore flights at no additional charge.

We will not charge overweight and/or oversized checked baggage fee(s) , fee(s) for military personnel; however, checked baggage exceeding our maximum permitted size or weight will not be accepted as guest checked baggage and must be shipped via cargo (all applicable fees apply).

Please be aware of the following military identification we accept, and what you must produce before you board your flight:

• A CFOne card with "CF" or "V"
• Certificate of Service (CF 54 or CF 75) from any branch of the Canadian military
• Discharge certificate from any branch of the Canadian military
• DND ID card for National Defense (NDI 20)
• Record of Service Card (NDI 75)
• Statement of Service from any branch of the Canadian military
• Valid DND temporary ID card (NDI 10)
• National Association of Federal Retirees with “Canadian Armed Forces Veteran” stated on the card.

WestJet also waives the baggage fees* for active military personnel from other countries who show valid military identification. This exemption does not extend to:

• Current Department of National Defence (DND) public servants and their families
• Serving and former Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and their families
• Other members of first-response agencies, peace officers, etc.
• Current staff of Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) and their families
• Current staff of Defence Construction Canada (DCC) and their families
• Current staff of Communications Securities Establishment (CSE) and their families
• Honourary Colonels/Captains(N), Lieutenant Colonels/Commanders and their families
• Former Staff of the Non-Public Funds, Canadian Forces with a pension and their families
• Former Staff of Department of National Defence (DND) with a pension and their families
• Family members of the Staff of the Non-Public Funds (NPF), Canadian Forces (CF)
• Family members of the Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC)

Musical instruments

Small musical instruments.

Instruments that fit in an overhead bin or under the seat in front can be taken in the cabin for your flight as a carry-on item. In addition to your instrument, you will be able to bring one personal item. Guests who booked an UltraBasic fare are permitted to bring an instrument as their one (1) personal item provided it meets the personal item size requirements outlined below. 

Maximum size for carry-on bag: 53 cm x 23 cm x 38 cm (21 in. x 9 in. x 15 in.)  Maximum size for personal item: 41 cm x 15 cm x 33 cm (16 in. x 6 in. x 13 in.) 

During the flight, your instrument must remain stowed in the overhead bin, under the seat or in other approved locations. Seats cannot be purchased for instruments.

The cabin crew may accept an irregular-sized musical instrument in the cabin and carry-on baggage is subject to space limitations, so come prepared to check your instrument if necessary.

Checking your musical instrument

You may need to check instruments that do not fit in the cabin, WestJet strongly recommends that musical instruments be in a hard-sided case and checked baggage fees will apply.

Baggage fees are charged based on fare bundle and WestJet Rewards benefits. Your cello or xylophone may be subject to excess, overweight or oversize baggage fees .

In the event of an aircraft downgrade

Sometimes with delays due to weather or unexpected maintenance, we need to do a little juggling. So, it’s possible that the plane that you booked is not the plane you will board. When this happens and you’re on a smaller plane, we’ll provide you with options if there is not sufficient space to stow your instrument in the cabin.

Taking a guitar with you?

You will need to loosen the strings on your guitar or cello—or any stringed instrument—before you travel to reduce the risk of the headstock cracking or snapping off with the changes in temperature and pressure of air travel.

Flying with a WestJet partner?

Musical instrument policies can be different between airlines. So, if you’re travelling on a flight operated by any carrier other than WestJet, we recommend that you visit the airline’s website to learn about their policies, fees and terms and conditions of carriage.

Sporting equipment

Sporting equipment is subject to all applicable baggage fees . Fees are combinable where applicable - if an item is overweight, oversized and a second item, all three fees apply. A handling fee of $50-59 CAD will be charged on firearms and select sporting equipment per direction of travel.

Here you can find out everything you need to know about carry-on baggage, your free baggage allowance and special baggage on your Lufthansa flights.

International travel

The fare to be paid covers the cost of transporting you from the airport at the actual place of departure to the airport at the actual final destination. It is calculated in accordance with the tariff which is applicable on the day you book your ticket for the flight dates and itinerary shown on your ticket. If you alter your route, this may have an impact on the fare you pay. The fare is recalculated on the basis of the actual route taken and, if applicable, the difference subsequently charged. Your fare does not include ground transport between airports or between airports and city centers.

Taxes, fees and carrier charges

Applicable taxes, fees and carrier charges imposed by the airline, government or other authority, or by the operator of an airport, shall be payable by you. At the time you purchase your ticket, you will be advised of taxes, fees and carrier charges not included in the fare, most of which will normally be shown separately on the ticket.

Reservation Service Fees

Customers who make a reservation through lufthansa.com may cancel their reservation without penalty up to 24 hours after the reservation is made, if the reservation was made seven days or more prior to the flight’s departure. Lufthansa will allow customers to hold a reservation made directly with Lufthansa’s telephone reservation center without payment for up to 24 hours, if the reservation was made seven days or more prior to the flight’s departure. - Online (lufthansa.com) - No fee - Online (lufthansa.com) for flights originating outside the U.S. - 15 EUR fee - Via phone (Lufthansa Call Center) - $20 ticket service fee - At the airport - $20 ticket service fee

Free baggage rules on Lufthansa (per bag/ each way)

The permitted free baggage allowance is determined by the service class booked and the status of the passenger and is shown on the ticket/Passenger Receipt. On all Lufthansa-operated flights  the following basic rules apply to free baggage :

1 bag up to 23 kg

2 bags each up to 23 kg

2 bags each up to 32 kg

3 bags each up to 32 kg

Free baggage dimensions:

The maximum size per piece of baggage (width + height + depth), regardless of class, is  62 inches (158 cm) . Items of baggage that are larger or heavier than the permitted dimensions and weight or that are additional to the free baggage allowance will be carried as excess baggage for a flat fee, see more information below.

Excess baggage regulations and flat fees (per bag/ each way)

For all tickets a  maximum travel weight of 32 kg per item of baggage applies , irrespective of service class. Items of baggage which exceed these weights will not be accepted as travel baggage. They can be sent by air cargo at air cargo rates.  For Lufthansa guests fees* apply if their checked baggage meets the allowed pieces but possibly exceeds in weight and/or dimension:

The free baggage allowance for children under two years of age is one piece of baggage weighing up to 23 kg and one folding pushchair. * Please note that in a number of countries a service charge may be incurred, in addition to the flat fee, for checking in excess baggage.

Exceptions to free baggage allowance regulations

For Lufthansa Economy Class passengers, on certain routes or with particular products, there are separate free baggage allowances with regard to the number of baggage items, and in some cases the weight. Special free baggage regulations for Economy Class

Special baggage rules for travel to/from or across the USA

Under a consumer protection law issued by the US Department of Transportation, the following baggage rules apply to flights to/from or across the USA:

• Consistent baggage rules apply to all parts of a journey to/from or across the USA. These include the free baggage allowance, the dimensions and weight of each of your bags, the level of any charges that may be incurred and hand luggage regulations.
• The baggage rules set by the airline which is listed first on the ticket are those that usually apply here. If Lufthansa is listed on the first flight segment of your ticket, then Lufthansa’s baggage regulations will apply to your entire journey* — both your outbound and your return flight.
• However, any airline which is listed as the first carrier on the ticket is at liberty to transfer the baggage rule stipulation to another airline in the itinerary (the so-called ‘Most Significant Carrier’). In such a case that other airline’s rules would then apply to the entire journey.
• Lufthansa therefore cannot guarantee that, for a Lufthansa-issued ticket, the Lufthansa baggage rules will always apply in every case. Other airlines often have baggage rules which differ from those of Lufthansa.

Fare overview Economy Class

Customers who make a reservation through lufthansa.com may cancel their reservation without penalty up to 24 hours after the reservation is made, if the reservation was made seven days or more prior to the flight's departure.

Economy Fare LIGHT: these fares are only available originating from Denmark, Norway and Sweden to the US.

The following conditions apply for reserving seats in Economy Class:

• The flight is operated by Lufthansa, Lufthansa Regional (Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa CityLine) or by Lufthansa Express Rail (DB). 
• The flight reservation is confirmed (no waiting list bookings).
• The seat is reserved no later than 48 hours before departure.

The following conditions apply for seat reservations in Economy Class on flights booked* after 21 March 2017:

* For tickets issued before 28 April 2014 seat reservations on intercontinental flights remain free of charge. **The price for a seat with more legroom varies per routing distance. On intercontinental Lufthansa flights to/from North and Central Africa as well as the Middle East, the price is EUR 50,00/USD 65,00. On flights to/from Argentina, Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Singapore, South Africa as well as Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco and Vancouver, the price is EUR 90,00/USD 115,00. On all other flights, the price is EUR 70,00/USD 100,00. *** Includes Azerbaijan, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Turkmenistan.  Please note that a confirmed seat reservation does not give you any legal right to a specific seat, only to a seat in your chosen category, e.g. window or aisle.

Lufthansa FlyNet®

Deutsche Telekom offers you three individual tariffs for using the Internet service. Payment is possible by all major credit cards. It is also possible to pay using PayPal. Miles & More members can also redeem award miles to settle their bill.

• 1 hour: 9.00 euros or 3,500 miles
• 4 hours: 14.00 euros or 4,500 miles
• Full flight (up to 24 hours): 17.00 euros or 5,500 miles

The full flight tariff (up to 24 hours) can be used in any Lufthansa aircraft fitted with FlyNet® while it remains valid. Please be aware that all tariffs are based on the so-called ‘parking meter principle’. This means that your HotSpot pass Sky has a fixed duration which starts when you first log on and which cannot be extended by intermittently logging off the Internet. Alternatively, if you are a customer of Deutsche Telekom or one of its affiliated roaming partners, you can also log on easily and conveniently with your access data, which you will need to request before the start of your journey. Your FlyNet® Internet use will then be charged in line with your service provider’s tariff. Please bear in mind that use on board the aircraft is billed as ‘international roaming’ and is therefore not necessarily included in the flat rate.

With the sole exception of flights over China: the system switches off automatically when the aircraft enters Chinese airspace and switches on again after leaving it.

Sky Phone - telephone on board

With our Sky Phone you can make phone calls during a long-haul flight. The fee for use is USD 9.95/minute. The Sky Phone is located between Business and Economy Class. Its technology was developed especially for phoning from Airbus A340 and Boeing B747 aircraft types. The charges for your calls will be billed comfortably via your credit card.

Miles & More: Award reservation change/cancel fee

You can redeposit miles from fully unused award tickets within 1 year from the date of issue once the reservation is cancelled. A charge of 50 EUR or 70 CHF/ USD 60 is payable for rebooking or cancelling a flight award. This amount may vary or be waived for certain flight awards. Only the date and time of a booking can be changed. It is not possible to change routes. A flight award once issued is non-transferable. The sale, exchange or offer for auction of award documents is not permitted. Miles from different mileage accounts cannot be transferred or combined. Flight awards can also be given without payment to friends and relatives without your having to accompany them on the flight. Flight awards passed on to third parties must be booked by you in person. The relevant number of miles will be debited from your mileage account.

Unaccompanied minors

The air fare for children up to 12 years of age is determined by the rules of the tariffs which apply. For exact information on prices please contact the Lufthansa Service Center, your local  Lufthansa Airport Ticket Team or your travel agent.

Flight from Delhi via Frankfurt to New York  EUR 100 / USD/CAD 165  (for 1. intercontinental flight) +  EUR 100 / USD/CAD 165  (for 2. intercontinental flight) =  EUR 200 / USD/CAD 330 .

Lap children

Infants who turn two during the journey will require their own seat; a child fare will be charged for the whole journey. On Lufthansa long-haul flights special baby cots are available. Please be aware that the number of seats with cots are limited. We have special bassinets available for you on our entire long-haul fleet: they are perfectly suited to babies under 11 kg in weight and under 67 cm in length. Night flights are especially suitable for journeys with small children because children can then maintain their usual sleep pattern and get some rest.

Please check aa.com for the most current baggage pricing. American Airlines (AA) will charge the following fees for any bags between 62-125 inches or 158-320 centimeters:

• $200.00 USD - U S domestic, the Caribbean, Central America (except Panama), Mexico, and Transpacific
• $150.00 USD – Panama, South America, and Transatlantic.

Please note that there are year-round limitations on baggage when traveling to Bolivia, Paraguay and cities in Brazil. Bags with overall dimensions that exceed 125 inches or 320 centimeters will not be accepted.

Are there fees for sports equipment on American Airlines (AA)?

Sports equipment such as skis, golf bags, fishing equipment, hockey, and lacrosse equipment will be accepted up to American Airlines' (AA) size and weight limits and will count as one checked bag/hold bag. Associated fees might be applied.

Before you board, check in at the gate so an agent can: Test that you can operate the POC and respond to its alarm; Explain the phases of the flight when the POC will be operable; Check your supply of fully charged batteries to power the POC no less than 150% for the duration of the flight and ground connection time (including unanticipated delays). Additionally, your POC must fit underneath the seat in front of you; You can't sit in an emergency exit, bulkhead or any seat that blocks another passenger's aisle access if you have a POC inflight; You may use your POC while moving about the cabin as long as the "fasten seatbelt" sign is not illuminated.

Delta Airlines Baggage Fees Guide: (International & Oversized) [2024]

Delta baggage fees are pretty similar to what other major carriers like United and American but there are some differences. In this article, I’ll tell you everything you need to know about the different types of baggage policies and fees for personal items, carry-ons, and checked baggage . I’ll also show you several ways that you can avoid paying Delta baggage fees, including those on international flights.

What are the Delta baggage fees?

Delta allows you to bring on one personal item and one carry-on item free of charge and will usually charge $35 each way for your first checked bag at or under 50 pounds. The price for additional bags will depend on the route you’re taking and on additional factors as well.  Keep reading below for more specifics on the baggage fees.

How to get free checked baggage with Delta

There are numerous ways to avoid checked baggage fees on delta airlines. One of the easiest and quickest methods is to just get the right credit card but I will cover all the different routes you can go below.

Delta credit cards baggage benefits

If you have an eligible SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express, you receive your first bag free on Delta flights booked with your SkyMiles Credit Card. The benefit extends to up to eight travel companions listed on the cardmember’s reservation (for a total of nine passengers).

Here is a list of eligible cards:

• Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card
• Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card
• Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card
• Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card
• Delta Reserve Credit Card
• Delta Reserve Business Credit Card

The Delta credit cards offer welcome bonuses tend to come and go throughout the year so for cards like the Gold and Platinum card, you want to make sure that you’re jumping on those cards when the welcome offers are the highest.

Typically, I would try to find these cards offering 60,000 miles or more for a welcome bonus. However, if you are primarily concerned with free baggage, then you might want to just jump on these cards right away!

Delta elite status baggage policy

If you have elite status with Delta they will reward you with free baggage (up to three bags). Here’s what you can expect to get from Medallion status.

Flights within the US

• Silver: One free 70 pound bag
• Gold : Two free 70 pound bags
• Platinum: Three free 70 pound bags
• Diamond: Three free 70 pound bags

You’ll also get an additional 50 pound bag for free when flying between other international destinations.

Also, if you are flying first class (Delta One) you can get three free 70 pound bags regardless of status level. And if you are flying Delta premium select you can get three free 50 pound bags regardless of status level.

Delta military baggage policy

If you are an active military member flying with Delta you can get many bags for free . When on military orders your bags can be 80 inches and for personal travel your bags can be 62 inches. If you are traveling on military orders you can get five free 100 pound bags regardless of what type of class you are flying. So for example if you are flying basic economy or you are flying first class you will get five free 100 pound bags each time.

Things are a little bit different if you are flying for personal travel. If you’re flying for personal travel then you will only get two free 50 pound bags if you are flying basic economy, main cabin, or Delta comfort plus. If you’re flying Delta premium select you get three free 50 pound bags. However, if you are flying first class, or Delta one you will get three free 70 pound bags. Delta carry-on & personal item rules

Delta allows you to bring on one personal item and one carry-on. This is very similar to other major US airlines but different from those budget carriers like Spirit and Frontier that love to charge you for carry-on items. One thing that makes Delta unique is that with their basic economy product , you still get a free carry-on.

What are Delta personal items?

Delta personal items may consist of the following:

• Laptop computer (computers cannot be checked)
• 1 item of a similar or smaller size to those listed above

Typically, a small backpack may be considered a personal item as well and they won’t give you any trouble unless you’re trying to bring along a giant backpack. There’s also a list of items that don’t count as personal items and they are as follows:

• A jacket and/or umbrella
• Food or drink purchased after clearing the security checkpoint
• Duty-free merchandise
• Special items like strollers, child restraint seats or assistive devices such as wheelchairs or crutches

What are the Delta carry-on dimensions?

• Baggage may not exceed 45 linear inches (or 114 cm) in combined length, width and height , including any handles and wheels, with the exception of small musical instruments that fit in the overhead compartment space or under-seat space available at the time of boarding .
• Baggage must meet carry on size limits (approximately 22″ x 14″ x 9″ or 56 x 35 x  23 cm) .

Passengers traveling on Delta Connection flights, and only those flights with 50 seats or less, are only permitted to carry personal items on board the aircraft due to limited overhead space.

Delta checked baggage policy

Your checked baggage must not exceed 62 inches when you total the length + width + height. Your bag must also be no more than 50 pounds unless one of the exceptions applies that allow you to have bags up to 70 or 100 pounds.

You should note that there are separate fees for each limitation you exceed: size, weight and quantity . So let’s say that you were checking an extra bag that also exceeded your weight allowance of 50 pounds and that the bag was also oversized. In that case you’d be subject to three fees: one for the extra bag, one for exceeding the weight limit and one for going over the size restriction.

Delta domestic checked baggage fees

The standard amount that you will pay for your first checked bag will be $35. However, the prices for checked luggage change depending on the route that you’re flying. Below are some of the fees you can expect to pay for domestic travel when traveling in basic economy, main cabin, or Delta Comfort+.

• 1st bag: $35
• 2nd bag: $45
• 3rd bag: $150
• 4th+ bag: $200 each

If you are traveling in first class, Delta Premium Select, or Delta One, you’ll be able to bring along two free checked bags up to 70 pounds on just about every route. 

Delta international checked baggage fees

When it comes to international flights, the baggage fees can change a lot depending on your destination. Here are some prices you might run into for travel around North America.

Travel between US and Canada

• 1st bag: $35 USD/CAD
• 2nd bag: $45 USD/CAD

Travel between US and Mexico

• 1st bag: $30 USD/CAD
• 2nd bag: $55 USD/CAD

It’s worth noting that for some international routes you don’t have to pay for your checked luggage at all!

For example, your first two bags can be checked for free when traveling from North America to the following countries: Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, & Yemen.

There are also a lot of other places that give you your first two bags for free when flying to or from the US like Australia, India, and many countries in Africa, South America, and Asia.

First class, Delta Premium Select, and Delta One baggage fees

As stated, you can check two bags free if you are flying First class, Delta Premium Select, or Delta One. Moreover, these bags can weigh up to 70 pounds each. This is the standard allowance of premium passengers that other airlines offer as well.

Special baggage limitations

Geographical restrictions with delta baggage.

Many airlines have special limitations on baggage when traveling to certain destination during certain times and Delta is no different.

For example, you may be limited to a maximum of one or two checked pieces of luggage when flying to places like Key West, Florida (EYW), Quito, Ecuador (UIO), the list goes on and on.

So they key is that if you have plans to fly out of the country on Delta and you are planning on bringing a lot of luggage with you, you need to first verify that you’re allowed to bring so much luggage with you during that time. 

What is the total number of bags you can check with Delta?

You can check up to 10 bags per passenger on flights operated by Delta, Delta Shuttle or Delta Connection. Delta does reserve the right to limit the amount of baggage you bring on the plane when the excess prevents them from transporting up to two bags per passenger.

Can you bring excess bags on Delta Connection flights?

Delta Connection carriers will accept excess baggage but only on a space-available basis . If the baggage cannot be carried on the same flight with you, it will be transported on the next available flight.

Delta special baggage items

Delta has some special rules for certain items such as fragile items, sports equipment, medical supplies, etc. Here’s a rundown of some of those policies.

Fragile or bulky items

If you are traveling with something bulky or very fragile, you may want to purchase a ticket for your fragile item so that you can store your item in any passenger seat with a physical bulkhead or divider in front of the compartment.

The EU's new hand luggage rule starts next week – here's what you need to know

Despite the promise of smoother security procedures at major airports in 2024, the plan to roll out advanced scanners that would eradicate the need to separate liquids and electronics and adhere to the strict 100ml rule has hit more than a few road bumps.

Since the technology update was first announced by the UK government in 2018, many airports stated they would miss the June 2024 deadline – and those that did manage to meet it have now been forced to revert back to previous carry-on rules.

But it isn’t just the UK that is impacted by these delays and changes . Come Sunday 1 September , airports in EU countries will likewise have to make a U-turn, as the European Commission will be enforcing temporary regulations until a “tech issue” with the equipment is rectified.

While there have been other reports that the EU will also be simultaneously standardising the size of hand luggage to make things fairer for passengers, a spokesperson for the European Commission has confirmed to Condé Nast Traveller that this is not true. “Unfortunately, there has been some misinformation spreading as no upcoming EU regulation foresees changes to hand luggage rules.

“What is correct is that in July 2024, the Commission services organised a workshop with all interested stakeholders to discuss possible common industry standards on the weight and dimensions of hand luggage. This initiative responds to a call from former Transport Commissioner Vălean in December 2023 to the industry to develop such standards in collaboration with other stakeholders. The Commission expects to hear further details from industry on the progress towards common standards soon and plans to organise a follow-up workshop in autumn.”

Here, we take a look at what is set to change around hand luggage rules – and what the restrictions will mean for tourists.

What are the EU’s hand luggage rules?

The rules for liquids are not new , but they are being reinstated in some airports on Sunday 1 September.

As has been the case since 2006, passengers travelling to an EU airport will be restricted in the amount of liquids, gels, and creams they can take in their carry-on luggage. Such substances should be in containers of 100ml or less and passed through airport security in a clear plastic bag of around 20cm x 20cm.

Your liquids must then be placed into a tray, separate from your luggage and other items.

Liquids include (but are not limited to):

• Semi-liquid foods, such as soup, preserves and honey
• Cosmetics and toiletries, such as foundation, sun lotion and lip gloss
• Sprays, including hairspray, deodorant and shaving foam
• Shower gel, hair gel
• Solutions, such as saline or contact lens solution

Exceptions are sometimes made for those with small babies, dietary and/or health requirements, though this should be checked with the airport in advance. Those carrying medication may need a note from a doctor, as well.

Which airports will be affected by the rules?

The changes will mostly impact airports that have already installed the new scanners. This is because other airports without scanners would still adhere to the 100ml liquid rule.

Although this is true and these specific rule changes only apply to airports in EU countries , there will be a knock-on effect for those travelling from other destinations to countries within the EU. Passengers should factor in their return journey, even if their airport of origin has the scanners in place.

Those travelling to and from airports in the UK that previously scrapped the liquid rule should also be mindful, as these locations have also reverted back to the 100ml rule.

What is causing the airport scanner delay?

Once rolled out, the new airport CT scanners will enable security to detect explosives in toiletries and electronics with higher accuracy, displaying high-resolution, three-dimensional images of the contents of passengers’ carry-on luggage .

This advanced EDSCB technology will allow airports to scrap the 100ml rule, which, in theory, will reduce wait times and queues while still ensuring safety. Passengers will also be able to keep their liquids, toiletries and electronics inside their luggage instead of separating them and placing them into the tray beside their other belongings. However, several setbacks have prevented the rollout.

Firstly, the installation process has proven expensive. Not only is the equipment pricey, but most airports have to reinforce their terminal floors to withstand the weight of the machines. Speaking to The Times, Birmingham airport’s chief executive Nick Barton explained: “The existing scanner is like a large domestic washing machine. The new machines are the size of a Ford Transit.” Moreover, there are also supply chain issues, and many airports are struggling to get hold of the equipment in the first place.

Major airports such as Gatwick, Stansted and Manchester all missed the government-imposed deadline of June 2024 but have stated the rollout should be complete within the first three months of 2025.

Several other UK airports, including Aberdeen, Leeds/Bradford, London City, Newcastle, London Southend, Teesside and Birmingham, all have the new scanners in place but have since reverted back to the 100ml rule – a report by the European Commission, which was sent to the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) last May, outlined there was a “technical issue” with the scanners that prevented the software from reliably detecting harmful substances with content over more than 330ml.

How long will these rules apply for?

A spokesperson for the European Commission told Condé Nast Traveller that while the reinforcement of the restrictions was a temporary measure, they did not have a specific end date. They stated: “The machines themselves, which are of high quality, are not in question. Also, the Commission is not acting on any new threat but responding to a temporary technical issue, in alignment with our international partners.”

How will the new carry-on liquid rules impact tourists?

In theory, seeing as most travellers are well-accustomed to these rules already, there should be little impact from the U-turn. However, some travellers would have booked their flights in advance, believing that the new scanners would be in place by the time of their trip – and, therefore, might not have bought hold luggage.

Tim Hentschel, the CEO and co-founder of HotelPlanner.com , tells Condé Nast Traveller: “Many passengers could now face the dilemma of paying extra to upgrade their luggage to accommodate their toiletries and other liquids.” The price of holding luggage or excess baggage at the airport varies depending on the airline, but it can sometimes cost you more than £95.

Even beyond the last-minute costs and general confusion around the rule changes, airports have experienced severe queues since introducing the new scanners. According to a 2024 report by Which? , Birmingham airport had the worst security wait times of any other UK airport, with an average of 29 minutes. It attributed some of the delays to the work going on to install the machines.

How can travellers best prepare for these new rules?

Tim recommends staying informed and allowing plenty of time. “With yet another U-turn, there is a risk of severe delays due to abnormally lengthy queues to get through security, and this is creating a sense of chaos for those who may risk missing their flights. So it’s now more important than ever to stay informed,” he says.

“It’s advised that travellers stay aware of the additional time spent queuing at security and allow extra time at the airport before departure. The ‘three-hour rule’ has previously been considered enough time. Still, with queues expected to take an hour plus, travellers are heavily advised to reconsider how early they arrive at the airport.”
