The full autopsy and toxicological results of the postmortems on two Dublin students who died in separate incidents on the Greek Island of Ios last weekend will not be ready for a week to 10 days, a police spokesperson in Greece has said.

Captain Konstantina Dimoglidou, of the Greek Police headquarters in Athens, said the force would issue a statement on the results when they were completed.

She confirmed that the autopsies on Andrew O’Donnell and Max Wall, both 18, were conducted in Piraeus, near Athens, Wednesday and that she expected the bodies of the two former St Michael’s College, Ballsbridge, students to be returned to their families on Thursday.

However, another police officer with knowledge of the case told The Irish Times that the autopsy found that Mr O’Donnell died from a fall from a height in which he suffered concussion to the brain.

In the case of Mr Wall, the death resulted from a heart problem, he said.

An official at the forensics department in Piraeus, Athens, where the postmortems were conducted, added that samples from the bodies would be sent to the University of Crete for toxicological analysis.

Upon completion of the examinations, death certificates for the two former St Michael’s College students can be issued and arrangements to repatriate the bodies can be made.

It is understood that repatriation can take place before the results of the toxicological tests come through – which the forensics official said would take some days.

Tim Kelleher, St Michael’s College principal, said it was expected all of the group from the school on the trip would be home from Greece by Thursday, with many originally having flights home booked for Wednesday.

Elaine Ryan, a member of the parents’ association who had flown to Ios in the aftermath of the tragedy, said local Irish people living on the island had provided “utterly amazing support”.

The boys’ Leaving Cert holiday had been “long planned and looked forward to” and was supposed to have been a “brilliant start to a new life full of opportunity”, she said.

“We are so proud of Andrew and Max, but so devastated by how just 24 hours can utterly change the course for two beautiful families,” she said in a statement.

Mr O’Donnell and Mr Wall, both aged 18 and both students of St Michael’s College in south Dublin, died within 24 hours of each other while on a holiday with classmates celebrating the end of the Leaving Certificate.

Initial indications suggest Mr O’Donnell died as a result of a fall sustained as he returned from a night out. Mr Wall participated in the search for Mr O’Donnell and collapsed suddenly at the island’s port shortly after his classmate’s body was found on rocky ground on Sunday morning.

It is understood Mr Wall previously had health issues with his heart, with one source confirming he had a successful heart operation about three years ago. It is likely the postmortem will investigate whether these prior health issues could have been a contributory factor in his death.

Greek police are investigating the deaths of two Irish teenagers who were celebrating the end of their school exams on the island of Ios.

The bodies of Andrew O'Donnell and Max Wall , both 18, were discovered on Sunday, and it is believed that the teenagers died in separate incidents.

Andrew O'Donnell went missing after a night out on Friday, and his body was found on rocky ground early on Sunday morning. It is thought he may have suffered injuries consistent with a fall.

Separately, Max Wall was found unconscious in the port area on Sunday afternoon.

Post-mortem examinations are due in the coming days.

Both young men were recent graduates of St Michael's College in Dublin .

Up to a hundred students from the school were on Ios to celebrate completing the end-of-school Leaving Certificate, along with hundreds of students from other Irish schools.

On Monday, bouquets of flowers were being left at the gates of the St Michael's campus in the Ballsbridge area.

'Absolutely devastated'

The school's principal Tim Kelleher said the school was "absolutely devastated, the entire community is reeling with the news over the last 24 hours", and said representatives of the parent association had flown to the Greek island to support the families.

Mr Kelleher described Andrew as a "fantastic young man, great sportsman, fantastic footballer" who was academically bright and was looking forward to his holiday and to attending college.

Max, he said, was "very bright", "passionate about rugby" and had "the world at his feet".

"Unfortunately both families got the news yesterday that their future had been taken from them and we're obviously devastated for them, their family and friends, and we're here to help and support in any way we can in the next days and weeks," he told RTE Radio.

Mr Kelleher said the group of classmates who had been on holiday with them are "absolutely traumatised" and are on their way home.

The Spiritan Education Trust, patrons of St Michael's College, expressed its condolences to the families of the teenagers.

In a statement, it said: "Our thoughts are with the parents and families of these two young men who today are suffering immeasurable loss.

"We extend our deepest sympathy and support to their grieving families, to all in their wider circle of friends and fellow classmates who will be mourning their passing and to the Board of Management, the school leaders and all our colleagues on the staff of St Michael's College."

A spokesperson for Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs said it was aware of both cases and is providing consular assistance, but declined to comment further.

Tributes have been paid to a young Irish man from Co Laois who tragically lost his life over the weekend in Greece.

22-year-old Rory Deegan, from Culahill, a small village in Laois, was found unresponsive in a swimming pool on Sunday night on the Greek island of Zakynthos.

Local media report that despite the efforts of a lifeguard who administered CPR, Mr Deegan was pronounced dead upon arrival at Zakynthos Hospital.

It is understood Mr Deegan had recently travelled to Greece with friends and had been working there for the summer.

The 22-year-old is believed to have been in Greece for about a month when the tragedy occurred.

According to RTÉ, Mr Deegan comes from a well-known family who own a "prominent business" in Urlingford, Co Kilkenny.

He previously attended Coláiste Mhuire in Johnstown, Co Kilkenny and was a student at the Technological University of Shannon in Limerick.

Mr Deegan played hurling for The Harps GAA club in Durrow and scored a goal for the club in a Junior C final win last year. His father Joe and grandfather Donal also played for the club.

The Department of Foreign Affairs have been made aware of the incident, and are providing consular assistance to the man's family.

Local Fine Gael councillor John King paid tribute to Mr Deegan, saying his tragic death leaves "a huge shadow of darkness hanging over Cullohill.

"Rory’s death is a huge loss to his family and a huge loss to the wider area," the Fine Gael councillor said.

“The Deegan family are held in very high regard and are very well respected in the Cullohill/Durrow areas where they are involved in several local organisations.

"It’s an awful tragedy. No family should have to deal with such a loss of a loved one at such a young age.”

Speaking to the Irish Mirror , councillor John King added: "His dad runs a supermarket in Urlingford, Co Kilkenny which would only be over the road.

"The family would be a very highly respected family, seriously involved in GAA and local community activities and have been for years.

"They're sound people, close to the community and a warm family. So this is very sad. For a young lad to go out to Greece and for this to happen. I want to extend my sympathy to his dad and all the Deegan family.

"I know the community is in complete shock and I know in Harps GAA club as well, Rory would have played and his family would have had a proud tradition at the club as well.

"A young man who went out with three or four other friends to Greece to get some work for the summer and to have this tragedy now, it's a terrible shock."

Derry hurling club Cumann Iománaíochta Chaoimhín Uí Loingsigh also paid tribute to the talented sportsman.

"It is with great sadness that we have received news from The Harps GAA of the tragic passing of Rory Deegan," the club said in a statement.

"Our deepest sympathy goes to Rory's family, friends, and the entire Harps Gaa community. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."

'We are heartbroken': Tributes paid to Irish teenagers who died on Greek island

'We are heartbroken': Tributes paid to Irish teenagers who died on Greek island

Tributes have been paid to the two teenagers, Andrew O’Donnell and Max Wall, as “bright, sporting, academic” young men.

Tributes have been paid to two teenage boys who have died on the Greek island of Ios.

The students have been named as Andrew O’Donnell and Max Wall.

They had graduated from St Michael’s College secondary school this year.

The Dublin school said in a statement on Sunday that Max was “a constant source of positivity” and described Andrew as a “popular” student and a “committed” footballer.

St Michael’s College released an initial statement about the death of Andrew before later confirming Max had also died.

"On a day of immense sadness for the school, we have been notified of another devastating loss from the class of 2023, with the passing of Max Wall.

"Max was a constant source of positivity, encouragement and fun for all of those around him. He was extremely popular with staff and students alike, and a fantastic supporter of our teams during the various cup campaigns (as well as a great brother to past pupil, Charlie).

"Our thoughts are with Max’s family at this awful time and with his friends who have experienced such shocking loss over the last 24 hours.

"Our school staff are available to speak with and assist any students who would like to connect over the coming days and weeks."

Earlier on Sunday, the school said it had learned of the “tragic passing” of Andrew O'Donnell, 18, and paid tribute to him as a “popular” friend and a “committed” footballer.

“Andrew was not only a popular classmate and friend, but a proud and committed member of our football team,” it said in a statement.

“He was kind to those around him, honest in all of his endeavours, and a great brother to Rory (Transition Year).

“Andrew will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

“Our thoughts are with Andrew’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.”

The school encouraged students who have questions about available supports in school to contact staff members.

'We are heartbroken'

St Michael’s College principal Tim Kelleher said a number of representatives of the school’s parents’ association have flown to the Greek island to provide support and assistance for the remaining students.

Counselling services and psychological support will also be provided at the school this week, he told RTÉ radio’s Morning Ireland . Mr Kelleher said that the school would open this week to offer support and that a book of condolences had opened.

“We are heartbroken. There's a very tight knit community and these are two fantastic young men with their lives ahead of them. Bright, sporting, academic who, as I say, had their whole lives ahead of them," Mr Kelleher said.

They had been looking forward to this for months on end. And the planning had been ongoing not just in our school, but outside of school. So I think there are hundreds and hundreds of families who have been plunged into deep, deep sadness because of what has occurred.

“It is exactly the nightmare that every parent dreads, group holidays, where you just don't want to get that call to say your child is missing. We are devastated for them and our hearts are broken and our sympathy goes to them all.”

Mr Kelleher said that he expected the other boys who were on the group holiday to return within the next 48 hours and that the school would be their community and provide support for the coming days and weeks.

“They just want to come home to their families, to their school, to their community. And that's what we're here for. We're here to work in the moment to help and support those boys in every way we can."

He added that the class of 2023 had been a very tight knit group of young men.

Tom McCormack, of the school’s past pupils union, said that the events of the weekend had been a double tragedy for the school.

“Our thoughts are with the families and the boys of the class of 2023 who were celebrating what should be their next step in their careers. It was a devastating day. We've been heartened by the huge volume of messages of support from Government ministers, councillors, senators and other schools.

"Our sister school, St Mary's eight years ago suffered the Berkeley tragedy. And we are now experiencing our darkest day and our sincere thanks to everybody who has come through primarily on social media over the last 24 hours when news of Andrew's body first broke and then a few hours later we heard that Max had passed away in hospital.”

Further and Higher Education Minister Simon Harris said the news emerging from Greece was “devastating”.

“Thinking of the families and friends of Andrew and Max and all Leaving Cert students abroad in Greece who were enjoying holidays after exams and are now encountering such shock and pain and grief,” he said on Twitter.

Leinster Rugby extended its condolences to both families, tweeting that it was in shock as it dealt with the information.

“Thoughts with the families and friends of the young men gone far too soon. Look after each other and hold your loved ones that little bit tighter.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it is aware of the incident and is providing consular assistance.

"As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases," a statement from the department read.

It is believed his family are now travelling to Greece.

It is the second tragedy in the last seven days involving an Irish student in Greece.

Rory Deegan from Laois died last Sunday in Zakynthos after his body was found in a swimming pool .

An Irish tourist who was found lifeless in a swimming pool at a club in Greece died after a burst vessel flooded his lungs with blood, an autopsy has revealed.

The 20-year-old was at the well-known Karma Beach Club in Laganas on the Greek island of Zante (Zakynthos) when he lost consciousness in the pool at 10pm on July 2.

The young man was on holiday with his friends at the time.

After spotting him motionless in the pool, the owner of the club, who is also a lifeguard, immediately jumped in and gave him CPR. However, he failed to regain consciousness.

After being taken to hospital, medics confirmed his death. His body was then sent to Patras for a post-mortem examination.

The autopsy has now given his cause of death as haemorrhagic pulmonary oedema - when a ruptured blood vessel causes the lungs to fill with blood -  according to reports in local media.

The results of toxicological tests to determine the cause of the oedema were are still pending as of Tuesday evening.

Earlier reports identified the victim as a 'British' tourist. However, local media now say he was an Irish national.

His name was still being withheld by the Greek authorities at the time of writing.

A barwoman at the club has told local media that ahead of being found in the pool, the young man was 'pale and trembling'.

The devastated club owner told a local TV station previously: 'The man entered the pool and moved from one side of the pool to the other. The bar woman saw him and she was concerned because he looked very white in the face.'

He said that they called a male nurse and that CPR was performed on the man as they thought he was dead. As the man showed no response, they also used a defibrillator.

The club owner added: 'We tried three times but it made no difference, then he was taken to the hospital. We're all devastated and in shock. I've been doing this job for 40 years and this is the first time something like this has happened.'

The investigation continues.

A Year After Greece Migrant Boat Tragedy, Answers and Justice Still Out of Reach

ATHENS/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Egyptian electrician Mahmoud Shalabi was the only person from his hometown to survive when a fishing trawler crammed with migrants capsized off Greece a year ago, killing hundreds in one of the deadliest recorded boat disasters in the Mediterranean.

Sixteen friends from Shalabi's neighborhood outside Cairo were never found. Today, their relatives call him daily to see if the missing have turned up alive, or if there is any news about what caused the boat to sink that day last June.

"No one is accepting that they might be dead," said Shalabi in an interview in Athens, where the 23-year-old is doing odd jobs while his asylum application is processed.

"Families are being tortured every day, not knowing anything about their son or their brother or their father."

The disaster on June 14 off southwestern Greece sent shockwaves across Europe and beyond and raised questions about the European Union's tactics to stem the flow of migrants from Africa and the Middle East. The boat had set off from Libya.

But a year on, no independent investigation has been completed into the coast guard's role, no one has been held accountable, and relatives await news of the fate of loved ones, according to interviews with a dozen survivors, relatives and lawyers.

The coast guard declined to comment. Shipping minister Christos Stylianides said the courts will find out what happened, in time. "We have to be patient," he told Reuters.

The cause of the shipwreck is disputed. Survivors say the authorities caused the boat to capsize when they tried to tow it. Authorities say the boat refused assistance.

In a report compiled one week after the incident, two experts appointed by the coast guard concluded that the movement of migrants onboard likely made it tip over.

Definitive answers will help ensure such disasters don't happen again, witnesses say.

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS

Greece's coastguard was aware of the migrant ship on the morning of June 13, and monitored it from the air. The ship sent out distress calls, but a coast guard boat did not arrive until 11 pm. The vessel sank three hours later.

The situation on board was desperate. Supplies had run out. Shalabi was asleep below deck and woken by screams as the boat began to take on water. He swam to the surface, which was crowded with floating corpses.

Up to 700 people were estimated to be on board. Some 104 survived and 82 corpses were recovered. The rest are missing. The search for survivors proved fruitless.

Greek authorities for months blamed nine Egyptians on board, but they were released last month when a Greek court dismissed the case. The focus of investigations is now likely to fall on the coast guard, legal experts said.

A local naval court opened an investigation last year, but it is still at a preliminary stage, lawyers and government sources told Reuters.

In November, Greece's ombudsman Andreas Pottakis launched a probe after the coast guard twice rejected his calls for an internal investigation, he said. The probe continues.

Eleni Spathana, a lawyer representing dozens of survivors who sued Greek authorities in September alleging the coast guard caused the disaster, said basic questions remain unanswered about "the criminal omissions and actions" of Greek authorities.

Fatima Al-Rahil lives in the Azraq refugee camp in Jordan with her five children. Her husband Ihsaan set off for Europe last year to try to get asylum and his family, who fled war in Syria, could join him later.

Fatima last heard from him on June 9 as the boat left Libya.

Ihsaan couldn't swim, so took a car tire for buoyancy. But armed smugglers discarded his belongings as he boarded, said his brother-in-law Khaled Al-Rahil, who was with him.

Ihsaan and Khaled were separated in the disaster. "I don't know what happened," Khaled told Fatima in a call the next day.

Fatima pushed for answers. In November, she sent a sample of her son's DNA to Greece via the Red Cross. Three months later, authorities said there was no match with any of the dead.

Without a body to bury, Fatima is left hoping. Maybe a fisherman found Ihsaan and is taking care of him, she wonders. His children miss him: he appears in their dreams, proffering gifts - ear warmers, or candy.

"We're still living on hope, even if it's just a 1% one," she said. "Maybe he went to heaven. But we're still here. We are the victims."

An Irish holidaymaker has died during a visit to a famous Algarve tourist attraction.

The 57-year-old is said to have gone into cardiac arrest after taking a dip at the Benagil Sea Cave, near the popular Portuguese resort of Lagoa.

Police and paramedics were called just before 3pm on Monday afternoon after he was taken to dry land on a boat.

Emergency responders attempted to save his life but were unable to do so and he was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. Family members understood to have been with him at the time are now receiving psychological support.

A spokesman for Portugal’s National Maritime Authority confirmed late tonight: “A 57-year-old Irish national died this afternoon having gone into cardiac arrest after swimming at the Benagil Sea Cave.

“An alert was received just before 3pm, informing us that a person was unwell after being taken to the nearest strip of sand. Officers from Portimao’s Maritime Police local command, as well as paramedics and other emergency responders, were mobilised along with firefighters from Lagoa.

"Upon arrival at the scene, they found the holidaymaker had been removed from the cave by a tourist boat and taken to the beach area where he was assisted by medical experts who carried out CPR. It was unfortunately not possible to save the man’s life.

“He was declared dead at the scene and his body subsequently taken to the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences in Portimão by Lagoa voluntary firefighters. The Maritime Police Psychology Office was activated and is providing support to the victim's family.” The dead man has not yet been named.

The Benagil Sea Cave is regularly described as Portugal’s most famous sea cave and is regarded as a must for holidaymakers visiting the Algarve. Many boat tours leave from the bustling resort of Albufeira 15 miles west. The cave has a giant opening at the top allowing sunlight to flood in.

This afternoon’s drama comes just five weeks after an Irish tourist drowned on the Algarve in front of his partner. The 52-year-old got into difficulties at Inatel beach in Albufeira, next to the hotel complex that gives it its name.

The alarm was raised just before 1pm local time on April 20. Two Portuguese locals jumped into the sea to try to help but also got into difficulties.

They were rescued alive by lifeguards but the Irish tourist couldn’t be saved. Police said at the time his partner, who was on the beach, was being supported by psychologists after the traumatic experience.

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — The remains of recently identified Greek soldiers who fought in Cyprus against invading Turkish troops nearly a half-century ago were returned to their families on Thursday.

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides attended a funeral service in the capital, Nicosia, for the 15 Greek soldiers before their remains were contained in Greek flag-draped coffins.

Christodoulides said it was the least the state can do to honor and pay respect to the memory of those who died.

Eight of the 15 soldiers will be reinterred back in Greece. The families of another six opted to have their remains reinterred at a mass grave in the Cypriot capital that stands as the country’s prime monument for the war. No family members have been located for one of the soldiers, according to the state broadcaster.

Turkey invaded in July 1974, a week after supporters of union with Greece mounted a coup backed by the Greek junta then ruling the country.

The invasion resulted in Cyprus’ ethnic cleave, with Turkish Cypriots later declaring independence that’s only recognized by Turkey, which still maintains more than 35,000 troops in the breakaway north.

Of the 2,002 people who disappeared in 1974 and the preceding decade amid ethnic violence, the remains of 1,033 have been identified and returned to their families since U.N.-led search efforts began in earnest in 2006.

U.N. officials said this marks the second-best success rate in the world, after the former Yugoslavia.

A total of 769 Greek Cypriots and 200 Turkish Cypriots are still listed as missing and officials say the passage of time poses a huge challenge.
