Expert Advice

diana

Some of what you think of as traditional Italian foods are actually American interpretations and not widely available there. Some examples are heavy cream sauces such as alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs, and chicken parmigiana (however, you may find these items in more tourist-oriented restaurants).

See Michelangelo's frescoed ceiling in the Sistine Chapel

One of the most important structures of the Catholic faith, the Vatican City’s Sistine Chapel is a must-see on a tour of Italy. Though the chapel walls have witnessed centuries of worship, it’s the renaissance ceiling paintings of Michelangelo that will leave you in awe.

Visit the glamorous Isle of Capri

Enjoy the classic Italian summer in Italy’s picture-perfect Gulf of Naples. Famed for its crystal grottos, dramatic coastlines and endless glamour, our trips to Italy are complete with a day of freedom spent under a striped umbrella, watching sailboats pass by.

Cruise your way through Venice

The charm found in the canals of Venice is nothing short of irresistible. Admire gothic palaces and postcard bridges whilst adrift in a gondola, gaining an understanding of life in a city that floats. Exploring a city by foot will never be the same after a trip to Venice.

Journey to the well-preserved ruins of Pompeii

An unfathomable history lesson is found in the archaeological ruins of Pompeii. Buried and preserved by the ash of a volcano eruption in the year 79, in this Italian town you will discover the progressive life of early Roman times as you walk within the parameters of an open-air time capsule of life on Earth.

Go shopping in Italy's fashion capital Milan

Armani, Gucci, Prada and Versace. These are some of the prestigious fashion brands that call the Italian city of Milan home. In between yearning through boutiques and department stores, stop to sample the city’s delicacies like breaded veal cutlet and ossobuco.

Our top 5 things to do in Italy

It's the moments of quiet stillness that take your breath away on a Trafalgar tour through Italy. Sitting in the calm halls of the Vatican. Floating on the canals of Venice. Standing beside the ruins of Pompeii.

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters are found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo dress Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River will show you the building’s architectural brilliance.

Vatican Museums

A collection of Christian artwork that spans centuries and stirs the soul is found in Rome’s Vatican Museums. From the intricate ceiling by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel to the detailed Pope portraits from the 16th century to today, you will be lost for words once inside this blessed museum complex.

Doge's Palace

Home to the leader of Venice from its opening in 1340, Doge’s Palace summarizes the sparkle of this city. An opulent example of Venetian Gothic architecture and home to numerous historical works, this museum is a must when you visit Venice.

Best museums in Italy

The epicenter of the Catholic faith and the birthplace of art’s most renowned masters. Our guided tours of Italy will take you to the many museums found here, whether in the Sistine Chapel, by the canals of Venice or in the grand galleries of Tuscany.

The authentic carbonara experience will take place in Rome, covered in salty Pecorino Romano cheese. A simple dish inspiring heart-warming meal times, this pasta will connect you with Italy’s rich culinary customs - an impressive evolution from its supposed heritage as a coal-miner’s meal.

Pollo alla Cacciatora

Literally translating to ‘hunter’ in Italian, cacciatore offers an appreciation for Italy’s meals of days gone by. Typically a preparation of rabbit or chicken, it’s the simmering tomato stew that makes this dish so mouthwatering. Satisfy a genuine hunger and consume with hand-ripped bread.

Italy tours are best served with an oversized slice of tiramisu. Cementing this country's obsession with espresso, this cake of layered biscuits soaked in coffee is the perfect after hours pick-me-up before an evening stroll through the charming streets.

Best food in Italy

A date with Italian food will likely start and end with a slice of pizza. But it’s the menu items that we share with you in between that will take your appreciation to new heights; think cacciatore and Carbonara with a slice of tiramisu in between.

What to pack for Italy

People packing for a tour

A classic linen outfit

The Italians are famous for their equal parts glamorous and effortless dress sense. Look the part with a few ensembles featuring classic linens in navy and white.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Italy, you might find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to remember the traditional Italian recipes you learn.

With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about Italian history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A small blanket

When exploring the soul-stirring setting of Tuscany, a picnic may call. Come prepared with a small blanket to cover in wine and cheese.

Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes

A classic memoir that brought the romance of Tuscany to the world, there’s no better time to read this book than when venturing through the country yourself.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and reusable toiletry bottles.

There's so much to see and do in Italy that it can feel a bit overwhelming to plan a trip that makes the most of the country's fabled history, art, architecture and cuisine – not to mention its 55-plus UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Guided tours are an efficient, hassle-free way to explore the country's top destinations and attractions . These Italy tours – considered the best by travelers and experts alike – vary by region, focus and method of transportation, but they all have one thing in common: informed guides ready to help you better appreciate your time in this beautiful European country.   While there are plenty of tours across Italy's most popular cities that last a few hours or an entire day, some travelers may be interested in multiday tours that visit several destinations or points of interest. Below are some of the top multiday tours in Italy.

Gray Line I Love Rome – 3 Day Excursion to Naples, Pompeii, Sorrento & Capri

Price: From 645 euros (about $700) Duration: 3 days

If you're interested in exploring some of the best day trips from Rome , but don't want to deal with the hassle of figuring out your own transportation or accommodations, this three-day tour may be for you.

After departing from Rome, your first stop is Naples , where you'll spend an afternoon exploring the UNESCO archaeological site of Pompeii with a guide. From there, it's on to Sorrento for the night. The next morning, you'll either have free time to explore Sorrento (if you've booked the tour between November and March – the low season) or enjoy a boat ride to Capri 's famous Blue Grotto (during peak season). On the third day, you'll head back to Rome. Hotel accommodations are included in the cost of the tour, as are ferry tickets to Capri and skip-the-line tickets to Pompeii, but most food and beverages are not.

A few tourgoers describe the pace of the tour as rushed, but most enjoy the historical commentary provided by the guide throughout the journey and are particularly impressed with the hotel accommodations in Sorrento.

Best Italy Tours

Gray Line - I Love Rome – UNESCO Jewels: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice in 5 days

Price: From $977 Duration: 5 days

Visit some of the most popular destinations in Italy on this five-day coach bus tour. After departing from Rome, you'll stop in the medieval town of Assisi, the city of Siena – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – Florence , Bologna and Venice . The tour includes hotel accommodations for all four nights, skip-the-line entrance tickets to select attractions featured on the tour, a handful of guided experiences and some meals.

Travelers applaud the tour guides and drivers for their professionalism and organization and call out the visit to Montepulciano (in Tuscany's wine region ) as a highlight. For many reviewers, the optional activities, such as the tour to Pisa, are worth the additional cost.

Sicily Activities – Tour of Sicily: Highlights

Price: From 1995 euros (about $2,168) Duration: 8 days

Groups are limited to just eight travelers on this eight-day tour of Sicily 's top cities and sights. You'll travel by Mercedes minivan and spend three nights in Taormina, two nights in Syracuse and two nights in Palermo (at four-star hotels chosen by the company). Highlights include a food and wine tour in Taormina, a guided hike up Mount Etna, and walking tours in Taormina, Noto, Syracuse and Palermo, among other activities. Some meals are included in the cost of the tour.

Tourgoers praise the guides and drivers for their professionalism and friendliness. Reviewers also say the hotels chosen by the company are comfortable and convenient and that this tour is a great choice if you're hoping to explore Sicily with ease.

You'll spend the majority of your time on this tour exploring the small towns nestled within the stunning Amalfi Coast . Highlights include a guided tour of Pompeii, two cooking demonstrations, several hikes – including the famous "Path of the Gods" – and a scenic ferry ride along the Amalfi Coast.

Along with the incredible views, tourgoers will also get a chance to participate in the company's commitment to responsible travel through its "G for Good Moment." G Adventures partners with Planeterra to connect travelers with a local migrant who leads a walking tour of Naples that not only highlights some of the city's historic sights and landmarks, but also explains how migrants' culture and religions have influenced modern-day Naples.

You'll spend one night in a hotel in Naples; for the rest of the trip, your home base will be a renovated 16th-century former monastery that's tucked into the hills of the small village of Furore. The accommodations are a particular highlight for some recent travelers, who appreciated not having to pack up their suitcases every few days to move to a new hotel, and say it delivered on the tour's "living like a local" premise. What's more, seven breakfasts and six "farmhouse" dinners prepared by the family who run the agriturismo (guesthouse) are included in the cost of the tour. Other reviewers were most impressed with the guide, who they describe as knowledgeable and organized. Groups are restricted to 16 participants – another highlight for recent tourgoers.

Ancestry Tour of Italy Itinerary

Day 1 - sunday, june 8 e ni scialamu.

You will arrive in Lamezia Terme Airport in time for the group transfer at 10:00AM and will be met by your bilingual travel host for the week, as well as your private driver.

You’ll transfer to your hotel, located on the pretty Catanzaro Lido lungomare, via a visit to meet my friend, Lucia, for a visit to her family’s olive grove. You’ll learn about their commercial production (and awards!), and see how they integrate their family’s dairy farm into the oil business.

You’ll learn how to tell good olive oil from the fakes, then will have a lunch picnic-style lunch on-site, complete with local specialties and of course – their olive oil.

Following lunch, you’ll continue to Catanzaro Lido where you will check into your 4-star hotel located directly on the seafront promenade, offering charming views of the Ionian Sea. We’ll meet for a Welcome to Calabria aperitivo at our favorite local bar.

Overnight Catanzaro Lido.

Day 2 - Monday, June 9 From Farm to Fabric: Silk Coop Experience

This morning, we’ll take an in-depth look into Catanzaro’s ancient silk tradition. Since the 1600s, Catanzaro has been home to one of the most important silk industries in Europe, and once supplied tapestries to the Vatican. We’ll join our good friends, Miriam and Domenico, who have brought new life to this dying tradition. From their base nestled in a beautiful Mulberry Tree orchard, they breed silkworms and give visitors hands-on experiences at extracting silk. Following our visit, we will be their special guests for a delicious multi-course lunch, with wine.

After lunch, we’ll return to Catanzaro Lido and this evening, we’ll reconvene for an optional, private wine-tasting experience.

Overnight in Catanzaro Lido.

Day 3 - Tuesday, June 10 Vino & Vistas: A Day in a Calabrian Vineyard

Today, you’ll visit a local cantina where you can enjoy the stunning panorama overlooking the sea and immersed in the green valley of olive groves. The excursion to their farm promises a day of relaxation, discovering nature and the beauty of this land. You can stroll through the vineyards and olive groves, tasting three types of wine: white, red, and rosé. You’ll also sample their olive oil and ricotta cheese with mosto cotto, that’s excellent on desserts, cheeses, and meats

Day 4 - Wed, June 11 Embracing Your Roots, Part I

Travelers with heritage in central and northern Calabria will depart with your private Calabrian Heritage Specialist. You will visit your ancestral town, learn what your specialist discovered during our on-the-ground research and learn more about your family in the village. You will have lunch in or near your town, then will return to your hotel.

Other travelers will spend the day in one of our favorite seaside villages – Pizzo Calabro, where history, gelato, and breathtaking views collide to create an unforgettable experience. You’ll begin with a visit to the intriguing Chiesetta di Piedigrotta cave church, where you’ll learn about its unique mixture of local history and legend.

You’ll head into the heart of the village for a seafood lunch. You will indulge in a seafood extravaganza where the owner personally selects the freshest catch of the day each morning from the local waters, ensuring a delectable and authentic maritime dining experience. You’ll end your afternoon in time for dessert, where you will visit my friend, Franco, for a behind-the-scenes look into how he makes his famous Tartufo di Pizzo chocolate and hazelnut gelato truffles.

Happy and full, we will return to Catanzaro Lido. Evening on your own.

Day 5 - Thursday, June 12 Embracing Your Roots, Part II

Travelers with heritage in central and southern Calabria will check out of your hotel and depart with your private Calabrian Heritage Specialist. You will visit your ancestral town, learn what your specialist discovered during our on-the-ground research and learn more about your family in the village. You will have lunch in or near your town, then will drive south to your seaside hotel in Capo Vaticano.

Other travelers will check out of their hotel and then spend the day in one of our favorite seaside villages – Pizzo Calabro, where history, gelato, and breathtaking views collide to create an unforgettable experience. You’ll begin with a visit to the intriguing Chiesetta di Piedigrotta cave church, where you’ll learn about its unique mixture of local history and legend.

Happy and full, we will drive to our seaside hotel in Capo Vaticano. Evening on your own.

Overnight in Capo Vaticano.

Day 6 - Friday, June 13 Day on the Coast

This morning we will hit the sea in our private boat to get a fish-eye view of the Coast of the Gods.

This breathtaking journey along the picturesque Tyrrhenian Sea showcases the stunning cliffs and crystal-clear waters of the Calabrian coastline. With a backdrop of dramatic landscapes and hidden caves, the ‘gods’ aren’t the only ones who will themselves into the natural beauty of the region. You will enjoy an aperitivo on board before returning to the marina.

Once on dry land, you’ll have the option of spending the afternoon in Tropea or you can choose to return to the resort to rest, relax, swim, go kayaking, or visit the spa.

In the evening, we’ll reconvene for a group pizza dinner.

Overnight Capo Vaticano.

Day 7 - Saturday, June 14 Tropea's Treasures: Unveiling the Legacy of Sweet Onions

This morning, we’ll head outside of Tropea for a visit to a local farm that grows and harvests Calabria’s, and Italy’s, most famous “red onion” – the cipolla rossa of Tropea. We’ll learn why this regional onion is a kitchen staple in many Italian households and how it can be used in a variety of dishes including pasta, jams, spreads and even ice cream! We’ll visit the fields and have a robust tasting, complete with wine from the family’s vineyard, followed by a stroll to the famous lighthouse lookout.

We will return to the hotel where you will have a break and will have access to the spa! Bring your suit if you plan to partake.

In the evening, we’ll meet for a sunset farewell dinner.

Day 8 - Sunday, June 15 Nivedemo Calabria!

At 8:00AM this morning, there will be a group transfer to the Lamezia Terme Airport.

Ciao Calabria!

Please Note

Group airport transfers are included at the scheduled times. Travelers arriving outside these times should inquire about private transfers.

The day of your private ancestry tour will be based on the location of your ancestral town in relation to the group’s location and activities. Heritage specialists and dates of private heritage tours are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

Are Custom Vacations just for independent travelers or can I have a guide and/or driver with me during my trip?

We love private tours and can often include extra fun elements that aren’t available to individual travelers. If you’d like a bilingual escort or driver, just let us know. We’ll be happy to plan your custom vacation accordingly.

What is the differences in a travel consultant, a travel agent and a tour operator?

This is a great question because there is sometimes overlap amongst the three which leads to confusion. To keep it quick though, a travel consultant is a local expert, meaning she only focuses on a specific part of the world, in some cases one country, in other cases (like mine) part of one country. This person usually lives (or has lived for an extended amount of time) in the place she consults on and has an intimate knowledge of the area.

A travel agent is similar in that she helps her clients put their trips together. A travel agent can specialize in a country but oftentimes hasn’t lived there and/or may not have traveled to all of the places her clients are going. A travel agent can search for and book flights and cruises that travel consultants can’t or choose not to book.

I often work with travel agents who want to ensure they are offering the best service to their clients. The travel agent will contact me and together we’ll put the Calabria/southern Italy section of their client’s vacation together.

A tour operator packages trip elements into travel packages that they either sell directly or through travel agents. Some travel consultants (like me) are registered as a tour operator for legal business purposes.

Travel agents are paid by commission – why don’t you just accept commission?

When you book a custom vacation, there is more going into your trip than simply recommending a hotel or a cooking class. I am invested in my clients’ trips and I work with them to choose the right base locations, to map out their ideal route and to ensure the hotels, guides, excursions and activities are right for them.

It’s been estimated the average person spends 100 hours researching, planning and booking a vacation. My clients either don’t have this kind of time to devote to planning their trip or they want to ensure they are making the right decisions for their vacation.

Besides the fact that I’m being paid by my clients to plan their trips, I choose not to accept commissions from hotels, car companies, chefs or other vendors because I don’t like the potential conflict of interest. If I don’t accept commission from anyone, then my clients know I always have their best interest in mind.

Do you book flights?

I don’t – but I can either coordinate with your travel agent, recommend an agent to you for group travel or tell you about the airlines I personally choose when I’m traveling.

Your group leader will receive a link to the full itinerary and information packet to distribute to travelers. If requested, each of your group members is also invited to attend a live webinar with our team prior to the trip to discuss any questions or concerns and to gain a better understanding of the group’s itinerary.

Your group will be met at the airport by Cherrye Moore, owner of My Bella Vita Travel, LLC or by one of our personally selected, highly trained bilingual heritage specialists.

She will escort your group throughout the trip, offering you 24-hour access to a bilingual coordinator.

For larger groups, an assistant accompanies the tour, providing members 24-hour access to an additional bilingual escort and Italy expert.

Our team members live in both the US and southern Italy. We understand the importance of your heritage journey and love sharing your wins with you.

We have visited the main attractions many times and have contacts throughout the country offering even more localized recommendations for your group tour.

We know what this trip means to you. Many of our clients travel to Calabria searching for their family heritage and we understand the emotional impact this trip will have on you.

We promise you a truly customized, fully private tour. We won’t add other travelers to your excursions or encourage you to go where you don’t want to go.

Your tour will feature exclusive experiences. We created many of the experiences in our tours, so you won’t find them available anywhere else – and we love adding in fun surprises once you are in Italy.

SAMPLE 10-DAY GROUP HERITAGE TOUR

Day1

You will arrive at Lamezia Terme Airport where you will be met by Cherrye Moore, your Calabria travel host. You will drive north to your farmhouse hotel near Morano Calabro. After settling in, you will enjoy a leisurely walk through the village before feasting on a traditional Calabrese dinner, complete with live, local folk music.

Day2

After breakfast, we will set out for your heritage tour. You’ll visit the city hall, the local churches, and cemeteries, and will meet the people your heritage specialist met during his advanced research. We’ll detour to to one of our favorite trattorias in the region, where our friend, Cesare, and his mamma, will create the best meal you’ve ever had!  Return to Morano and have the rest of the evening on your own.

Day3

We will have a light breakfast, then will push up our sleeves for a hands-on cooking class with Adriana, one of my oldest friends in Italy. We’ll feast on our creations before heading into the historical center for an afternoon passeggiata. Gelato optional.

Day4

This morning we will skip breakfast at the hotel and head out with our guide for a typical Calabrese breakfast in the piazza. You’ll choose to either stand barside – like the locals do – or you can grab a seat and people-watch from this historical bar.

Following breakfast, we will drive to one of our favorite vineyards in all of Italy. This boutique vineyard is owned by a pair of brothers who together with their mom and dad, bought a piece of land and a plow and set out to make some of the best Calabrian wine you’ll ever taste.

After the tour, one of the brothers will prepare lunch for us, a menu chosen particularly to go with their wines. In the early evening, we will return to the hotel for a rest. We’ll meet up in the evenings for a group passeggiata and aperitivo.

Day5

After breakfast we will check out of our hotel and will drive south to Pizzo Calabro. Along the way, we'll stop in Fiumefreddo Bruzio, an ancient hamlet in the province of Cosenza that sits perched on the cliffs overlooking the Tyrrhenian sea. Today, Fiumefreddo Bruzio has two parts: the ancient borgo and the more modern marina. The origins of Fiumefreddo Bruzio trace back to the Middle Ages and was probably chosen for the strategic and defensive possibilities it offers.

As you walk through the grand entrance that leads you into the old town, you are instantly greeted by the beauty and history of this hamlet. Fiumefreddo Bruzio doesn’t hesitate to embrace you with its beautiful noble residences, impressive churches, and piazzas with stunning views of the coastline,The town is one of " Italy's Most Beautiful Hamlets “ – and it’s easy to see why!

After a slow food lunch in town, we'll drive to the coast to Belmonte Calabro, where you'll visit a family-owned fig factory that dates to the early 1900s.

We'll arrive in Pizzo Calabro and check into our hotel in the center of town. You'll have the evening on your own.

Day6

This morning you will explore Pizzo Calabro! Your first stop is the intriguing  Chiesetta di Piedigrotta  cave church, a limestone cave with statues dedicated to Maria. Then, we'll hit the town for a seafood lunch at my friend Bruno’s, where his delicious food has him one of the “Top 30 chefs under 30 to watch." We’ll skip dessert, then head into the piazza for a behind-the-scenes look at how tartufo di Pizzo gelato truffles are made.

After an afternoon break for free time, we'll venture into the nearby hills for an evening wine tour and tasting at one of our favorite vineyards. This winery is known for high quality, organic wines that respect the territory's natural qualities and was listed in the NY Times as having one of the "Top 10 White Wines in the World." Try it for yourself, and let us know!

Day7

This morning we will check out of our hotel and head north towards Catanzaro, via an excursion to the fairy tale-like mountain village of Serra San Bruno. We will visit the enchanting pine tree forest, Saint Bruno’s charterhouse, and have you choice of a mountain picnic or mushroom feast. We will continue to Catanzaro where you will check into your hotel. Overnight in Catanzaro.

Day8

You will have a light breakfast, then set out for the “Green Heart of Calabria” – La Sila Mountains. There, you will visit a small, Alpine-like town that is home to 22 year-round residents and a guided visit to artist Mattia Pretti's hometown, the City of Art – Taverna.

You will feast with the Bianco family at their generations-old restaurant in the mountains, before walking through the park’s botanical gardens. We will return to Catanzaro. Overnight in Catanzaro.

Day9

You’ll skip the hotel breakfast today and visit our favorite bar in Catanzaro Lido, where you’ll meet the owner and have a private gelato-making lesson. After a breakfast of sweet brioche and gelato, you will visit the nearby ruins of Scolacium, Greek and Roman ruins that may have been discovered by Ulysses. You’ll tour the small, interesting olive mill museum and have a light lunch nearby. You’ll return to the hotel to rest and pack, then will meet up again for a private farewell antipasto and wine pairing send-off at a local wine bar.  Overnight in Catanzaro.

Each territory has its own history and identity. Let's take the time to discover them little by little, along the tracks of 7 of the most beautiful heritage railways in Italy

A slow travel is like cuddles for the soul, a gift we can make to ourselves to rediscover the joy of savouring a moment without haste. In Italy there are many ways to do exactly this, but one of the most fascinating is to board an heritage train to travel like our grandparents did.

Pulled by steam locomotives on tracks that have sometimes been abandoned for decades, we will experience the thrill of an authentic dive into the past , through small villages full of history and cities of art, immersed in some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the country.

7. Valsesia Railway - Piedmont

20211112144628vigneti.jpg

The line originally created to connect Novara with Varallo Sesia crosses a marvelous and varied landscape, which plows through the river Po Valley and then climbs along the side of the mountains.

The circular route , which begins and ends in Novara, covers a first stretch of a few kilometers, crossing the great agricultural plains of Piedmont. Between rice and cereal fields, we will then enter the poplar woods or run along the vineyards. Subsequently, the steam locomotive travels through the Sesia valley offering beautiful views, with the snow-capped mountains often on the background.

In Varallo you can get off the train to get to know the ancient village up close. It is home to, among other things, a railway museum and a famous monumental complex. The Sacro Monte , a monastery perched on a steep hill, can be reached by cable car.

Your Italy trip to Rome, Venice, and Florence will uncover where Jewish traditions converged and conflicted through time.

Customizable Itinerary

Rome - arrival in rome.

Rome is a spectacular city of inspiring ruins, exceptional art, and immersive layers of history. Your flight will arrive at Fiumicino Airport, where your private transfer will greet you at customs. You can settle in to the comforts of your hotel before starting your introductory tour of Rome. The city will glow with a soft light as you witness the city's marvels, from the renowned walls of the Colosseum to the graceful figures of Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona. The posing giants personify the four main rivers that were known to the world at the time.

What's Included:

Rome - Rome's Jewish Ghetto and the Vatican

Your day will begin with a tour of Rome's Jewish Ghetto. In season, the scent of cherry tarts drifts out of the kosher bakery. Your guide will unravel the tangled history of the Jewish community and Rome that dates back two millennia. The brass cobblestones near the gates of the ghetto represent those who were taken and lost during World War II. At the Vatican, you will explore the exceptional collection of art and artifacts that encompass more than 70,000 exhibits. Inside the Rafael Room, you will find the impeccable images of philosophers, such as Plato and Pythagoras.

Venice - Venice's Jewish Ghetto

Venice is a city of winding canals and elegant Renaissance palaces. Your private transfer will meet you at the hotel and escort you to the train station to catch a high-speed train. After the scenic ride, you can enjoy the views and quiet ambiance of your accommodation in the city on the lagoon. Your tour of the Jewish Ghetto will lead you past where the original gates stood in the 16th century. Five synagogues overlook the narrow cobblestone streets of the Old Ghetto, and the square of the New Ghetto remains the center of life among the typical Venetian homes.

Venice - Bask in Venice's Beauty

The morning air will fill with the scent of espresso as it emanates from the local cafes. The day will be yours to bask in the endless charm of the city. St. Mark's Basilica towers over the edge of the eponymous piazza with bulbous domes that reach 141 feet. The porticos glint with golden mosaics and date back to the 16th century. The scenes depict episodes from the Bible, from Creation to Moses. The interior brims with color, and its more than 45,638 square feet of gilded Byzantine mosaics cover the interior domes.

Florence - Florence's Unique Highlights

Florence is known as the "Cradle of the Renaissance" and has preserved its illustrious reputation in the art and architecture that decorate the banks of the Arno River. Your high-speed train will arrive at the station, where your private transfer will greet you. Your discovery of Florence will begin with your Jewish Heritage tour through what life in the Jewish community was like when Botticelli painted La Primavera or when Galileo shaped theories on the universe. Your guide will uncover the signs of the ghetto near Piazza della Repubblica, which is an example of what little remains after its destruction in the late 19th century.

Florence - Chianti and Oltrarno

Your guide will take you through the marvels of Chianti, which is full of rolling hills, towering cypress trees, and sweeping vineyards. You will visit a kosher winery that exports up to 45,000 bottles a year. The distinctive red wines of the region will have a sharper focus due to the specific restrictions of kashruth. As you sample the variety of wines produced in the vineyards, you can find hints of cherry and violet, which drive upwards from the glass. In Florence’s Oltrarno neighborhood, your guide will introduce you to the preserved heritage of local artisans.

Rome - Explore Medieval Siena

The charming city of Siena possesses remarkable Renaissance art and the prestige of preserved medieval walls. Your guide will highlight the picturesque Tuscan hills and artistic inspiration that once rivaled the core of Florence. The remarkable Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta casts a dramatic posture of Gothic features that are accentuated by the multi-colored facade. The interior contains faint traces of frankincense, and you will discover the intricate sculptures that were crafted by the likes of Donatello, Michelangelo, and Bernini. Fifty-six mosaic floor panels add to the cathedral's luster and depict a mixture of historical and biblical scenes.

Rome - Departure

Your final morning in Itlay will fill with the familiar aromas of espresso and buttery cornetti pastries. If you have time, you can enjoy a walk along the cobblestone streets of Rome at your own pace. Your private transfer will meet you in the hotel lobby after breakfast and escort you to Fiumicino Airport with plenty of time to connect with your flight home.
