Jack Whitehall

Jack Whitehall is an award-winning actor, comedian, presenter and writer. Widely celebrated for his hit show Travels With My Father (Netflix, 2017-19), his starring role in the BBC’s adaptation of Decline & Fall (2017) and Bad Education (BBC 2012-14), Jack has most recently been seen in Disney’s The Nutcracker And The Four Realms (2018), and in Bounty Hunters (Sky 2017-19). He is currently in Good Omens (Amazon, 2019) and set to star in Jungle Cruise (Disney, 2020), opposite Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, while Travels With My Father is entering its third season in 2019. An acclaimed comedian who loves the stage, Jack has also sold out arenas across the UK on two tours: Jack Whitehall Gets Around (2014) and Jack Whitehall: At Large (2017), which was filmed for Netflix. In the autumn/winter 2019, he will go back on the road for his biggest-ever tour, Jack Whitehall: Stood Up. In fact, the stage is where it all started. Jack began his career at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2007, where he won both The Charlie Hartill Special Reserve Competition and The Amused Moose Laugh Off. A string of further awards followed, including The British Comedy Awards’ King Of Comedy, as voted for by the public, three years in a row. From there, Jack has increasingly appeared in films, on television, the stage and as an unlikely comedy duo with his father, Michael Whitehall. Finally, as a presenter, Jack has hosted the BRIT Awards (2018 and 2019) and several other prestigious award ceremonies, like the BAFTA Britannia Awards (2015, 2017 and 2018). He became the youngest-ever host of the Royal Variety Performance in 2015. For YouTube, he presented Training Days, where he travelled the world to interview international football stars in the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup 2018. In 2019, Jack became the first person to stand in as host of the Graham Norton Show in 20 years.

The final series of Jack Whitehall's Travels With My Father has finally been released on Netflix, and it appears the father and son duo have saved their best destination until last.

For those who are unfamiliar with the series, Travels With My Father is a show in which comedian Jack Whitehall along with his 'posh' father Michael - who Jack refers to as daddy - travel across the globe taking on new experiences and adopting new cultures.

And, after visiting a number of countries around the world, it appears that the pair could not resist travelling down to the west Country in order to get a taste of Devon.

Whilst embracing true British culture in episode one of series five, Jack and Michael venture down the winding South West roads to arrive in the county, where Michael was born.

And, the first stop on their Devon tour was a trip to Burgh Island.

The pair park their plush Range Rover in a car park prior to catching the famous sea tractor over to the island, but not before Jack stops at the Venus Cafe for a portion of fish and chips.

Arriving at the island, the pair got stuck in to a theatrical Agatha Christie style murder mystery show at the island's iconic Burgh Island hotel which involved them dressing up and taking on the role of two mysterious characters.

Back in April, Jack and Michael Whitehall were spotted with a camera crew whilst filming in the Burnthouse Lane area of Exeter.

Eye-witness and local resident Sarah who spotted the TV stars said: ''I'm not sure why they were filming there I think it was for [Travels With My Father] but I was so shocked to have seen him and his father, especially because I've met Jack a fair few times before, so was shocked to have seen him where I live.''

Despite being spotted in the city, Exeter does not make an appearance in the show itself.

Michael and Hilary Whitehall's 21-year age gap explored as they discuss youth

Jack Whitehall's new Netflix show, Fatherhood with My Father, sees the comedian open up about his fears of becoming a dad for the first time, turning to his own parents for advice

Jack Whitehall with his parents Michael and Hilary

  • 08:00, 10 Sep 2024

Comedian Jack Whitehall has enlisted the help of his parents, Michael and Hilary Whitehall, in his latest Netflix series, Fatherhood with My Father. The show documents Jack's journey into fatherhood, featuring moments before and after the birth of his daughter Elsie in September 2023.

The four-part documentary includes snapshots and footage from Jack's own childhood as he voices his apprehensions about becoming a first-time dad. He seeks guidance from his parents, confessing his feelings of "inadequacy".

Michael and Hilary delve into their own upbringings, with Michael having grown up to be a successful talent agent, while Hilary pursued a career as a television actress.

Hilary shared details about her first job, stating: "As you know I worked as a postnatal doula for 10 years. I don't think you have any idea what is coming down the tracks at you."

A doula is an individual who provides support to women during labour, birth and postpartum. Hilary didn't hesitate to tell her son that seeking advice from his father might not be the best idea.

Meanwhile, 84-year-old Michael reminisced about his time at Ampleforth College, a Catholic boarding school in Yorkshire run by Benedictine monks.

He attributed his inability to swim to the monks, after Jack used a "sink or swim" analogy to describe Michael's experience of becoming a father.

Michael revealed: "The monks who taught swimming at my school were all wearing habits, but they weren't allowed to take their clothes off and jump in the swimming pool."

"Every day when I go to swimming pools, I think 'If only I could swim'."

Michael was born in 1940 in Exeter, Devon, before starting his education in Yorkshire.

Hilary, who is 21 years younger than Michael and currently 63 years old, opened up about their age gap and how they met.

In a chat with The Guardian, she shared: "Michael and I are on top of the Acropolis in front of the Parthenon, which had been closed for filming."

"That was a rare event, so I went mad up there that day taking photos, as it was completely empty apart from the crew."

"Michael's hat and gloves were borrowed from the costume department, and I was in my normal holiday garb."

"At this point in time, about 10 months in, my parents were still struggling with the concept that I was going out with a divorced man 21 years older than me."

Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood with my Father is available on Netflix now.

Meet Jack Whitehall's Father (and Netflix Special Costar!) Michael Whitehall

Jack Whitehall's dad stars alongside him on Netflix’s 'Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood with My Father'

Jack Whitehall's father, Michael Whitehall, may not be the biggest name in Hollywood, but he is the man behind some of them.

From Colin Firth to Dame Judi Dench , Michael has been supporting actors for years as a talent agent. These days though, he’s supporting a talent even closer to his heart: son and famous comedian, Jack Whitehall .

In 2017, the pair made their first Netflix comedy documentary together, Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father . The show followed the father-son duo as they traveled through southeast Asia, striving to “strengthen their bond,” per Netflix . Seven years later, in September 2024, the Whitehalls released another series, Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood with My Father , this time focusing on Jack becoming a dad.

Related: Who Is Jack Whitehall's Girlfriend? All About Roxy Horner

Jack and Michael said on The One Show that they enjoyed working together on their new series, even if their dynamic on-screen can occasionally be combative. "We loved working together ... We did have a really good time doing that," Jack said.

Michael agreed in an interview with School Notices , saying, "Working with Jack has been the absolutely special thing. I’m very lucky to have had my later years filled doing things with him which is a real treat."

From charting a storied path in the entertainment industry to maintaining a long marriage, here’s everything to know about Jack Whitehall’s father Michael Whitehall.

Michael is English

Michael was born in Exeter, England on Apr. 12, 1940.

During his upbringing, he attended a Catholic boarding school, Ampleforth College, in Yorkshire.

He began his career as a film reporter

Long before becoming a father, Michael kicked off his career in the world of entertainment as a reporter.

At the time, he wrote for a weekly newspaper called The Universe . Before becoming an agent, he had many other roles, including a schoolmaster, a legal clerk, a copywriter and a fundraiser, per the BBC .

Michael told School Notices that his family would have preferred he stay in law, but he didn't have the attention span for it. “My mother wanted me to be a doctor or barrister, and she had very grand plans for my career," he said.

Michael has been married to his wife, Hilary Gish Whitehall, for more than 35 years

On Apr. 12, 1986, Michael married his second wife, Hilary Gish. Previously, he had a four year marriage with Jane McIntosh, from 1969 to 1973.

Michael and Hilary had careers in common, as she was a television actor, and met when Michael started representing her. Now, the couple reside in London and co-host their podcast, The Wittering Whitehalls . In their free time, they love to attend soccer games.

He has three children

Along with Jack, Michael and Hillary share two more children, Molly and Barnaby “Barney” Whitehall.

Molly, born in 1989, was the director and founder of WDW Entertainment, an independent communications consultancy and now works as an awards consultant. While she leads a private life, she often shares photos of her family on Instagram. In April 2023, she shared a photo of Michael with his grandchild and wrote in the caption, “Happy Birthday to the greatest father and grandfather. We love you so much."

Barney, born in 1992, has followed in the family’s artistic footsteps, working as the creative director of Nearby Productions, a “team that specialise[s] in delivering unique content for brands and talent,” per his LinkedIn .

Michael has represented famous talent

In his career as a talent agent, Michael has represented famous actors. Among them are British Academy Film Award winner Edward Fox, Academy Award winner Colin Firth and Academy Award winner and Dame, Judi Dench.

School Notices even credited Michael for discovering Daniel Day-Lewis and Michael Fassbender when they were in drama school.

He has produced a variety of TV projects

Along with his Netflix series with Jack, Michael has produced a variety of British television series including: A Perfect Hero (1991), The Good Guys (1992) and Noah’s Ark (1998). Likewise, he’s produced television films including the psychological thriller Element of Doubt (1996), which his son Barney acted in.

Beyond the screen, Michael is also an author. In 2007, he released his first book, Shark Infested Waters: Tales of an Actors' Agent , which Jack illustrated. In 2013, he debuted his second book Him & Me , which he co-wrote with Jack. Four years later, Michael published his memoir, Backing Into the Spotlight .

Michael stars in Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood with My Father

As Jack was preparing to become a father, he enlisted Michael's help. The resulting Netflix series, which premiered Sept. 10, 2024, follows the father-son duo as they take birth classes, contend with the future of tech in children's lives, and discuss mortality.

Jack welcomed his daughter Elsie with his girlfriend, Roxy Horner, in May 2023, which is also documented in the Netflix series.

'Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood With My Father' Review: Babies Not on Board

Don't expect much parenting insight from the comedian's new show (and consider that a blessing)

I’ve often wondered what the whole having-a-baby thing is like for dads. “What’s it like for dads?” I asked myself, as I howled like an injured Wookiee in the labour ward, while my other half polished off the NHS-issue fish and chips. “What’s it like for dads?” I pondered, as I sat in an armchair breastfeeding my baby for the fifth time one night, while my sleeping partner spread out like a starfish in our bed. “What’s it like for dads?” I mused, as my sense of self slid quietly out the door. So thank god! Jack Whitehall – and his dad – are here to enlighten us in the form of a new four-part TV show : Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood with my Father . Some answers at last.

Comedian Jack and his dad, Michael, are a familiar double act, having trundled around the world together for five series of Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father . Their dynamic is well established by now: Jack is impish, immature and amusing; Michael is stiff, sweary and exasperated. They obviously get on deep down of course, and the new show at least purports to announce a new chapter in their relationship as Jack begins a new one of his own, having become, by the second episode, the father of baby Elsie. Here will be a chance for Jack to explore the travails of modern parenthood, while also getting a better understanding of what his own dad must have been through while raising him; or as Michael puts it, that “there's more to life than just arsing around”.

The first episode, “Birth”, at least has a veneer of genuine enquiry. Jack and Michael attend an antenatal class (great!); Jack and Michael learn about perineal massage (hmm); Jack tries out an empathy belly (sigh); Michael zaps Jack with a TENS machine (ho ho!); Jack leaves Roxy and Elsie in London and flies with Michael to America to get swaddled by a celebrant in a spiritual rite of passage (...Oh). The giant blanket may be on, but the gloves, as far as Jack's real TV-making agenda goes, are off.

“Since little Elsie has come into my life, I’ve been thinking a lot about protection,” he says, at the start of episode three, “Survival”. “Not that kind of protection,” he quips, because he can’t help himself, “although to be fair I have also thought quite a lot about that because right now the idea of having two of them… fuck that.” No, what he means is protecting his baby from the perils that the world may bring: Doomsday, the zombie apocalypse, nuclear annihilation. “We’d probably be better off baby-proofing the house,” Horner suggests while she stands at the sink doing washing up, as Jack slumps over the breakfast bar eating a carrot.

To be fair to Jack though, who wants to watch tired parents installing a baby gate? So instead, while Horner stays home to put covers on the plug sockets, he and Michael are off to Utah to meet some heavily armed survivalists and tour luxury condos inside a vast nuclear bunker. In the episode before that, “Technology”, he and Michael were in Cornwall meeting a sexy robot, and then in California to meet unhinged people who insert magnets under the skin, in order, er, for Jack “to understand how body modification might affect Elsie in the future.” Later he’ll go to a medical centre in Italy and a sweat lodge in LA for… I forget.

Of course it’s all silly, and of course Whitehouse know that. Despite the occasional archive clip of Michael and baby Jack in days gone by, it’s hard to believe he’s devoting even one iota of seriousness to the thesis of his own show. He's simply using it as a loosely thematic justification for a few more whacky adventures with his grumpy pops (and his also quite sound-seeming mum, Hilary); any emotional evolution that may or not be happening to him is taking place firmly off-screen.

If you've watched all five seasons of the previous outings by Whitehall père et fils , you might also find the formula is losing its potency. Jack will make a joke about Michael being 100 years old; Michael will tell Jack to fuck off; repeat ad infinitum. It’s definitely predictable, and possibly a bit tired. But – try as you might to resist it – it is also an easy televisual trot-along that works.

Whitehall’s gift has always been to lean in to and turn to his own advantage the things that others might find most objectionable about him: his poshness, his wimpishness, his uselessness. He’s clearly pathologically unable to resist undercutting any serious conversation with a silly gag, but like it or not, he’s also genuinely very funny. (I laughed out loud when he kicked out a dainty leg while posing for a group photo with a bunch of brawny preppers: he might not have muscles but he’s got balls.)

And yes, the format’s a little old and a little lightweight, and you’ll learn next to nothing about having a baby – except that when you’re massaging someone’s perineum, you should treat it like the face of a clock and rub it “from three to nine” – but actually, who really wants emotional excavation on a Wednesday night? And certainly not from a posh, wimpish, useless comedian (damn it! He’s got me again!). The thousand-dollar “what’s it like for dads?” question can remain unanswered for now; to be honest, no one was that interested anyway. As Jack says when he staggers out of the sweat lodge, his naked mum clambering out behind him: “Fuck it, this is a television show, they’ve got enough for the edit.”
