For Rs 500 Per Night, Uttarakhand To Offer Real Jail Experience To Tourists: Report

The prison is being renovated to transform it into a suitable lodging for "jail tourists."

The Haldwani administration in Uttarakhand has come up with a unique initiative to offer travel enthusiasts who want to experience what it's like to be imprisoned. They said this is also meant for those visitors who wish to serve time to remove a problematic astrological alignment from their horoscope.

And in order to accomplish this, the jail administration in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, has thought of a unique way to assist individuals in avoiding "bad karma" for a little price of Rs 500 per night spent in jail.

An area of the former prison is currently being renovated to provide lodging for "tourists" seeking a true "jail experience."

Not just tourists, but also those whose astrologers have counseled them to serve time in jail in order to avoid "Bandhan Yog" in horoscopes that predict imprisonment.

According to a report by The Times of India , the Haldwani prison was built in 1903, and a portion of it, comprising the old armoury with six staff quarters, which has remained abandoned, is currently being used to receive "jail guests".

"The jail frequently received "orders" from senior officials to allow "recommended persons" to spend a few hours in the jail barracks. These "tourist inmates" are given prison uniforms and food made in the jail kitchen", Satish Sukhija, the prison's deputy jail superintendent told TOI.

"All such cases are mainly of people whose astrologers predict that a jail term is inevitable as per the planetary positions in their horoscope. We have an abandoned portion inside the prison that can be developed as a dummy jail to accommodate such ‘inmates' for a night for a nominal fee of Rs 500," the jail official said.

A Haldwani-based astrologer, Mrityunjay Ojha, said, "When three celestial bodies, including Saturn and Mars, are placed in an unfavourable position in one's horoscope or birth chart, it becomes an equation that predicts the person may have to undergo imprisonment. In such a situation, we usually advise the subject to spend a night in jail and have their meals provided by inmates so as to bypass the bad effects of planetary positions."

"I had moved a proposal regarding the matter earlier too, to the inspector-general of prisons. He not only appreciated it but even asked me to send him a detailed project report," Sukhija told TOI.

Get Real Jail Experience For Rs 500/Night; Uttarakhand’s Haldwani Prison Offers Jail Tourism

James Paul

Ever wanted to experience how it is like to spend jail time without actually committing a crime, or a petty offense? Well glad tidings for you from devbhoomi - Uttarakhand. Haldwani prison in the Nainital district of the state is readying itself to receive ‘tourist inmates’ at its premises. You get to wear an inmate's dress and gorge on sumptuous jail food, all for a mere 500 bucks per night. A nominal fee to relish the life of a prisoner for a night. Sounds like a quirky campaign from the cops no? Nah! The reason behind offering this jail tourism is even more bizarre. Scroll on.

The Haldwani prison in Uttarakhand has developed its abandoned part to accommodate tourists who want the experience of a night in jail. The tourists can stay in prison for Rs 500 a night to get a ‘real jail feel.’ #JailTourism #HaldwaniPrison https://t.co/nrzVw8mtmt — The Logical Indian (@LogicalIndians) September 28, 2022

According to the jail official, an abandoned portion of the prison is being converted into a dummy jail to accommodate people who have cursed horoscopes. The astrologers tell that, folks can get rid of their ‘ bandhan yog ’ from their ‘ kundali ’ by doing some jail time. The belief is that according to the planetary motion, it is inevitable for some to avoid jail term. Mritunjay Ojha, a Haldwani based astrologer says that when Saturn and Mars align with one’s horoscope in an unfavorable position then they must at some point of life undergo imprisonment. For such unfortunate souls, it is advisable to spend a night in jail. This would cast away the inevitable planetary loose motion. The city astrologer advised Haldwani jail’s inspector general about the same and he gladly agreed.

According to the TOI , the following portion of the precinct is being prepped for the ambitious jail tourism. This honestly looks kinda haunted though. Goldmine for content creators. Any takers?

About the Haldwani Jail

The Haldwani prison was built in 1903, is now over 100 years old and a section of its building is being prepared to receive guests and tourists. The section consists of the old armoury with six staff quarters, all of which had been abandoned for a long time. The jail often received “orders” from officials to allow “recommended persons” to spend time at the prison.

The initiative seemed to have an astrological aspect to it as a few people are advised by astrologers to spend time in prison to ward off ‘bandhan yog’, a belief that prophesizes that the person in question will be incarcerated at some point in the future.

As told to TOI, The prison’s deputy jail superintendent Satish Sukhija  - "All such cases are mainly of people whose astrologers predict that a jail term is inevitable as per the planetary positions in their horoscope."

The official also revealed that the ‘tourist prisoners’ are provided with food and clothing from the prison. The clothes are real prison uniforms as well.

What is Bandhan Yog?

Bandhan yog in Indian astrological charts usually refers to a bit of jail time, which, according to beliefs can be prevented by taking recommended measures.

According to astrologer Mrityunjay Ojha - when three celestial bodies are placed in an unfavourable position in one’s birth chart, it becomes an equation that predicts the person may have to undergo imprisonment. In such a situation, we usually advise the subject to spend a night in jail and have the meal provided to inmates so as to bypass the bad effects.

Haldwani Jail Tourism

Uttarakhand jail tourism.

If you are a normal person and have repentance regarding something in life or if you believe in astrology and your astrologer has predicted that you will soon land up in jail, then don’t get panic. Now, the jail administration of Haldwani has come up with a unique concept of giving real-life jail experience. So, if you feel like warding off the evil in you then this is the best remedy.

Jail Experience Price

If you think that you need to commit a crime to get jail experience, then stop thinking like that. You can spend a night in jail by paying Rs 500 to the jail authorities of Haldwani. So, if you think to get rid of your bad karmas then pay Rs 500 and spend a night in jail. The jail can be even experienced by the tourists coming to the state as well.

Haldwani Jail

The Haldwani prison was constructed in the year 1903. A part of the jail premises remains abandoned. This portion comprises the old armory consisting of six staff quarters that are not in use. So, the Haldwani jail administration has started the work of rejuvenating it for the ‘jail guests’.

What the jail administration says?

The Haldwani prison’s deputy jail superintendent, Satish Sukhija, says that the jail often gets orders from the seniors to permit recommended people to spend a few hours in the jail. The proposal regarding this matter was sent to the inspector-general earlier too, he added, which was highly praised by him and asked for the report on this entire project.

What astrologers have to say about this?

Mrityunjay Ojha, a city-based astrologer, says that when three celestial bodies (Saturn and Mars included) are placed in unfavorable places in one’s horoscope or birth chart, it means that the person will have to go to prison. In such cases, the person is advised to spend a night in the barrack and consume the same meal that is provided to the other inmates. This is the solution to bypass the ill effects of the unfavorable positions of the celestial bodies.

The Haldwani prison in Uttarakhand has developed its abandoned part to accommodate tourists who want the experience of a night in jail. The tourists can stay in prison for Rs 500 a night to get a ‘real jail feel.’

The abandoned parts of the Haldwani prison are being developed to accommodate "tourists" who want to experience what a night in jail feels like or even for those advised by astrologers. "All such cases are mainly of people whose astrologers predict that a jail term is inevitable," a jail official shared.

Whether it's a wish of someone or they want to complete a bucket list, the jail experience is now possible in Haldwani prison. The Uttarakhand police are working to transform an old part of the Haldwani prison into an accommodation facility to give real jail feel to tourists.

According to officials, many people are also advised by their astrologers to spend time in jail to get rid of 'Bandhan Yog' in horoscopes that prophesies a jail term. The jail administration's idea to ward off the bad karma at just Rs 500 has now become real.

The Haldwani prison, over 100 years old, was built in 1903. Due to lack of maintenance, part of the prison and six staff quarters have now been prepared to welcome jail guests. According to prison officials, they often receive orders from bureaucrats to allow their friends or relatives to spend some time in prison.

The deputy jail superintendent, Satish Sukhija, said, "I had moved a proposal regarding the matter earlier, too, to the inspector-general of prisons. He not only appreciated it but asked me to send him a project report," Times Now reported.

Similar Arrangements In Telangana

A prison in Telangana also allows tourists to live a life of prisoners for 24 hours at Rs 500. Located in the Medak district of Telangana, the Sanhareddy District Central Jail started the jail tourism facility six years ago.

It's no less than a heritage site, built 220 years ago by the Nizams. Initially, the prison was converted into a museum when Deputy Superintendent of Police M Lakshmi Narasimha proposed the idea of 'Feel the Jail.' Later, they also invited tourists to stay for 24 hours as part of an expansion of their concept.

Ever Heard Of Jail Tourism? Uttrakhand Prison Reportedly Offering ‘Real Jail Experience’ For ₹500

Jail tourism seems to be the new thing for Uttarakhand. The Haldwani prison in Uttrakhand is offering a ”real jail experience” for ₹500 per night.

Uttarakhand Haldwani Prison turned into jail tourism for ₹500 per night.

When Vishal Bharadwaj was making Maqbool , he replaced the three witches with two astrologer policemen. He justified this by saying that witches would be unrealistic, but cops and India’s love for astrology would not.

Maqbool police

Perhaps proving him correct is Uttrakhand’s Haldwani prison. Work is being done to transform a part of the old prison into accommodation for ”tourists” looking for a real ”jail feel”.

According to jail officials , astrologers tell those who have ’ bandhan yog ’ in their ’ kundali ’ to get rid of it by spending time in jail. It is believed that according to planetary motion, it is inevitable for some to serve a prison sentence. Therefore, to ward it off, many are advised to spend a night in jail and eat the food served to inmates.

jail tourism in uttarakhand

Hence, the idea of warding off the ’bandhan yog’ with a nominal ₹500 is attractive to many. Referring to this, Deputy Jail Superintendent Satish Sukhija stated that the jail frequently received ‘orders’ from seniors to allow ”recommended persons” to spend a few hours in the jail barracks, in prison uniforms, and consume the food made in the jail kitchen. This inspired officials and the deputy jail superintendent to propose this venture.

Other potential visitors could be tourists looking for a thrill or trying to tick something off their bucket lists.

The Haldwani prison was built over 100 years ago, in 1903. The new tourist spot was previously an abandoned section comprising of old armory and six staff quarters.

Perhaps Bharadwaj was not wrong, after all.

You can just spend 500 bucks per night and you end up enjoying this absolutely aesthetic fetish as a part of the jail tourism started by Haldwani prison in Uttarakhand.

Jail Tourism

The prison administration of Haldwani, Uttarakhand is at your service to ward off your’ bad karma’. It is affordable and convenient. Here is a list of all the things you get in the abandoned jail.

Planet’s Evil Eyes Off

According to a local astrologer, “When three celestial bodies, including Saturn and Mars, are placed in an unfavourable position in one’s horoscope or birth chart, it becomes an equation that predicts the person may have to undergo imprisonment”.

Jail Tourism Haldwani

In such a situation, also known as the ‘bandhan yog’, the people are advised to spend a night in jail to avoid going to prison and overcome the evil planetary positions. This offer by the prison authorities will prevent you from going to a real prison.

Real Prison Experience For The ‘Jail Guests’

‘Jail Tourists’ are provided meals in the night stay package specially cooked in the kitchen of the prison. The jail-cooked food also is a part of the larger picture of avoiding a jail term suggested by many local astrologers.

Unusual Proposal For Setting Up A Jail Tour

The proposal given by Satish Sukhija, Jail Superintendent, was appreciated and happily accepted by the Inspector General of Prisons, Pushpak Jyoti. The senior officials often ordered the jail authorities to allow ‘recommended’ people to spend some hours in jail and these people received jail food and uniform. This facility is now being extended to interested people.

Jail tourism is the new trend.

The Haldwani prison is giving an opportunity to stay for a night but there have been jails in different cities of India that have provided the citizens with the opportunity to visit the jails.

Recently, Maharashtra Government also opened access to Yerawada Jail, Pune. The jail was built in 1866 which makes it an important historical architecture. A nominal fee of Rs 5 for visits by school students, Rs 10 for college students and Rs 20 for individual tourists is levied.

Yerawada Jail

The capital city of India, also has its Tihar Jail established in 1957, open for tours. Only some parts of the jail premises are accessible to tourists.

Prison Food

Port Blair also has its history defined by the Cellular Jail also known as Kala Paani which has been an important detention centre during the colonial era. This jail is open for tourists to visit.

Historicity Of Haldwani Jail

Haldwani prison dates back to 100 years and came into being in 1903. The old armoury along with six staff quarters which is an abandoned part of the jail is being worked upon to receive the Jail tourists.

Jail

Jail tourism is not new in India for it has historical importance. Jail has been an important witness to the freedom struggles of the colonial period. It is for the first time that jail tourism is being promoted in the name of astrology and superstition. The government officials encouraging this is a matter of pity.

The prime question arises- In the age of science, why are superstitions still a thriving business?

"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.

The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.

Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."

The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.

"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we can’t be a family without Dad," she said.

The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.

It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."

The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."

The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.

"It’s incredibly scary. You know, you just don’t know what the next day may bring — you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.

"You know, it’s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It’s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.

Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.

His case goes to trial May 3.

Have You Ever Wondered About Prison Life? You Can Now Spend A Night In The Real Uttarakhand Jail For ₹500.

Have You Ever Wondered About Prison Life? You Can Now Spend A Night In The Real Uttarakhand Jail For ₹500.

Is committing a crime the only way to enter prison? Well,  if you’re also fascinated about experiencing jail life for some time, then here’s interesting news for you. The Haldwani administration in Uttarakhand brings a  fascinating offer for travel enthusiasts. They’ve come up with a unique initiative to provide an imprisonment experience i.e. “spend a night in jail” for ₹500.

The department of prisons in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, has devised a unique method to help individuals avoid ‘bad karma’.This comes at a modest cost of ₹500 per night. Even cheaper than staying in a hotel! Prisons often receive “orders” from high-ranking officials to allow “recommended persons” to spend a few hours in the prison barracks. Well, this rule doesn’t remain the same any longer.

According to a Times of India report, Haldwani Prison was built in 1903 and consisted of an old armoury with six staff quarters, part of which remains abandoned, and now receives “prison guests”. Areas of the former prison are currently being renovated to provide accommodation for ‘tourists’ seeking an actual ‘prison’ experience.

According to reports tourists who spend a night in this will be provided with food and clothing from the prison, including authentic prison uniforms.

Uttarakhand is also an excellent place to get off the beaten track. If you're looking for fresh air and tranquility, you'll love some of these boutique Himalayan getaways .

Jim Corbett National Park

One of India's most popular national parks , Jim Corbett National Park is named after hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett. It has dense forest and an array of wildlife, although tiger sightings aren't as common as some other places in India. The park can be explored by jeep or elephant safaris, which take place daily in the early mornings and afternoons. The Dhikala zone of the park is the most panoramic, with stunning valley views. It offers the best chance of animal sightings (which are unfortunately sometimes disappointing). If you're lucky, you might spot wild elephants.

Ancient Haridwar (the "Gateway to God") is one of the seven holiest places in India, and one of the oldest living cities. The evening Ganga Aarti holds a special appeal.

Despite the growing number of visitors, the town's lanes and alleys retain an old-world charm. It remains a wonderful place to relax and unwind among nature.

The hill settlement of Nainital, in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, was a popular summer retreat for the British during the time they ruled India. It features emerald colored Nainital (Naini) Lake and an action-filled strip called The Mall, lined with restaurants, shops, hotels, and markets. Enjoy one of the many forest walks, explore the surrounding area on horseback, or relax on a boat in the lake. This destination gets very crowded during summers, especially on weekends, due to its proximity to Delhi. Around Nainital, you'll find Jeolikote, Bhimtal, Ramgarh and Mukteshwar which are all less developed and quieter places to stay.

  • Location: About 6.5 hours drive east of Delhi.
  • Check Out Current Nainital Hotel Deals on Tripadvisor and Save

It attracts its share of foreigners who head to nearby Kasar Devi Temple, where Swami Vivekananda meditated. There are some chilled out places to stay in the area, such as Kasar Rainbow Resort and Mohan's Binsar Retreat,  as well as inexpensive guesthouses with private cottages just outside Almora town. Around Almora, you'll find the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kausani (where Gandhi spent time writing his  Bhagavad Gita  treatise), Ranikhet and the Jageshwar temple complex.

Valley of Flowers National Park

The remarkable landscape of The Valley of Flowers National Park in the Garhwal region comes alive with the monsoon rain. This high-altitude Himalayan valley has around 300 different varieties of alpine flowers, which appear as a bright carpet of color against a mountainous snow-capped background. It's a popular trekking destination, open from the start of June until the end of October.

  • Location: About 15 hours drive northeast of Delhi, plus a trek.

Located high up in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, the Char Dham (four temples) mark the spiritual source of four holy rivers: the Yamuna (at Yamunotri), the Ganges (at Gangotri), the Mandakini (at Kedarnath), and the Alaknanda (at Badrinath ). Hindus consider a pilgrimage to the Char Dham to be very auspicious. Not only is it believed to wash away all sins, but it will also ensure release from the cycle of birth and death.

Uttarakhand even has a skiing destination! Auli lies on the way to Badrinath and has a three-kilometer long slope, gondola, chairlift, and Poma ski lift. For skiing, conditions are best from the last week of January to the first week of March. However, it's dependent on good snowfall, which is variable. If you're into trekking, the Kuari Pass trailhead is at Auli. This trek, which passes through Nanda Devi National Park, is one of the state's best and most accessible. Thrillophilia offers six-day guided trips from Haridwar . There are many other hiking trails around too.

Accommodation options in Auli are scarce but Devi Darshan Lodge is recommended if you don't stay at the popular government-run Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam Hotel (which offers ski programs). Alternatively, the Himalayan Abode Homestay near Joshimath is excellent, and the host is a skiing and snowboarding champion and coach. Another good option is Himalayan Eco Lodge .

Magical Munsiyari, a small town surrounded by towering mountains in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, is paradise for mountaineers and trekkers. Blazing sunsets create a stunning backdrop of color-stained peaks there. However, the hiking and trekking routes are the biggest draws. Munsiyari is the base for the challenging nine-day Milam Glacier Trek , and the much easier two- to three-hour trek to Khalia Top is another attraction. The Tribal Heritage Museum, filled with artifacts from Munsiyari's trade with Tibet on the ancient salt route, is also worth seeing. Milam Inn , albeit basic, is the best place to stay in Munsiyari and it offers fabulous mountain views from the guest rooms.

Not to be confused with the Chopta Valley in Sikkim, Chopta lies between Kedarnath and Badrinath in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, at the entry to Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. It attracts travelers who want to enjoy the great outdoors away from the crowds and development. Chopta is the starting point for treks to Tungnath temple (open from June to September) and Chandrashila summit. It's a short, yet scenic, moderate trek that can be completed in a day. Notably, the temple is the world's highest Shiva temple. Thrillophilia offers four-day guided trips from Haridwar.

  • Location: About 10 hours drive northeast of Delhi, via Rishikesh.

It's likely that you've never heard of Kalap, a tiny remote village that's only accessible by foot, 7,500 feet above sea level in the upper Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. That's because it's totally off the tourist map. A responsible tourism project was established there in 2013 to help improve the livelihoods of the villagers. Kalap is an outstanding place to get away from it all and experience the simplicity of village life or go trekking along trails followed by nomadic shepherds.

  • Location: About six hours north of Dehradun in Uttarakhand.

Oklahoma man facing 12 years in Turks & Caicos prison released on bond, banned from travel

Ryan watson made bail a couple weeks after he was detained and arrested for ammo possession in turks & caicos. but he's not allowed to leave..

jail tourism in uttarakhand

An American man facing 12 years in prison in Turks & Caicos after airport security found ammunition in his duffel bag won’t have to spend one more night in jail . For now.

Ryan Watson, 40, appeared before a court on Wednesday, agreeing to pay $15,000 to secure his release, according to a news alert from The Royal Turks & Caicos Islands Police Force.

The court granted Watson's release about two weeks after he was initially detained and arrested. He's being released with a slew of stipulations, including being prohibited from leaving the archipelago nation. He also had to surrender his passport and travel documents to the court, and needs to report to police twice a week as his case moves through the system.

His next court hearing is set for June 7.

Here’s what we know.

Why were Ryan and Valerie Watson detained in the Turks and Caicos?

Ryan and Valerie Watson were in Turks & Caicos to celebrate the 40th birthdays of several friends in early April, USA TODAY reported.

The couple was trying to catch a flight back home on April 12, when airport security found four rounds of ammunition “unknowingly left in a duffel bag from a deer hunting trip,” according to a GoFundMe post made on behalf of the family.

They were both questioned and subsequently charged with possession of ammunition, a charge that carries a minimum of 12 years in prison in Turks & Caicos.

The couple was stuck on the island without passports, unable to get back to their two young children, which left Valerie Watson “terrified.”

“We can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home," she told WBTS-TV in Boston  "And this is such an innocent mistake that we ... didn't even know it was there. So yeah, my immediate thought was our kids and them being parentless for that long."

Ryan Watson maintains that it was a “bonehead mistake” on his part, not knowing that the ammunition rounds he typically uses to hunt whitetail deer were in his bag, the outlet reported.

Ultimately, the charges were dropped against Valerie Watson, who has returned to Oklahoma.

Oklahoma governor vouches for family: ‘Outstanding members of the community’

Days after the Watson family was detained, Republican Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt sent a letter to the Turks & Caicos Islands government in an attempt to get the home sooner.

“The Watsons are upstanding members of their community and the State of Oklahoma, and I can assure you countless others stand willing to confirm their high moral characters,” Stitt said.

He continued to say that the couple would never “intentionally break the law,” emphasizing the importance of having them return to Oklahoma so they can continue to serve the community, Valerie as a school teacher and Ryan as a medical product salesman.

And so that their children, Van and Ellie, don’t have to face another day without both parents, he said.

Family creates GoFundMe to bring Ryan Watson home

Close friends have created a GoFundMe on behalf of the Watson family to cover the costs of “mounting legal fees, living expenses, and the overwhelming stress of their situation.”

Valerie Watson said that the strain her family is under is tremendous, telling WBTS-TV that it could “ruin them.”

“We've already talked, and we're like, what if we lose our house? Which, when we moved to Oklahoma, we built a home that we thought was our forever home,” she said.

The sentiment was echoed by Ryan Watson, who says “this is something that we may never recover from.”

“The emotional and financial toll is immense, and they are at risk of losing everything,” the fundraiser description reads.

The GoFundMe had raised about $196,000 of the $250,000 goal by Friday night.

What happens next?

Valerie Watson and her children are awaiting her husband’s next court appearance, set for June 7.

Even though Ryan Watson “forgot” about the ammunition in his bag, he may not be able to leave the Turks & Caicos Islands without serving time. The government prohibits anyone, of status or origin, to possess a firearm, ammunition, or any other weapon.

There are exceptions to this, of course, but the court is still required to issue “both a sentence of imprisonment and a fine” that are in line with what the court would consider an “exceptional circumstance,” USA TODAY reported.

The Turks & Caicos government stiffened the penalties for firearm possession in February, noting that there were a handful of cases involving "exceptional circumstances" that allowed accused people to get away with paying a fine. “exceptional circumstances."

An Oklahoma tourist says he faces 12 years in prison in the Caribbean after he mistakenly left 4 bullets from a hunting trip in his carry-on duffel bag

  • Ryan Watson was on vacation when he was charged with illegally carrying ammo into Turks and Caicos.
  • He and his wife, Valerie, say the four bullets in their duffel bag were unknowingly left there from a hunting trip.
  • Watson now faces 12 years in prison, alongside several US tourists charged for similar offenses.

Insider Today

An Oklahoma man traveling with his wife in the Caribbean territory of Turks and Caicos faces 12 years in prison after four rounds of ammunition were found in his luggage.

Ryan and Valerie Watson arrived in Turks and Caicos earlier this month to celebrate his 40th birthday with several other couples, their families said in a GoFundMe. NBC Boston reported that the Watsons arrived on April 7.

But the pair, who have two young children, were arrested in the self-governed British territory after airport security found the four bullets in their carry-on duffel bag.

Their families' GoFundMe said the ammo had been left in the bag unintentionally, and was from a prior deer hunting trip.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for white-tailed deer, and I recognized them, and I thought: 'Oh, what a mistake.' I had no idea that they were in there," Ryan Watson told NBC News.

Valerie Watson was released from the charges on Tuesday and flew back to Oklahoma to reunite with her children.

But her husband remains in Turks and Caicos, and was granted $15,000 bail the day after by the local supreme court, according to a police statement.

He now faces 12 years in prison, which is the minimum custodial sentence for bringing firearms or ammunition into Turks and Caicos.

Ryan Watson must stay on the islands and report twice a week to a local police station while waiting for his hearing, which is set for June 7.

Meanwhile, his family is trying to raise $300,000 for his legal fees and housing in the Caribbean.

"Isolated from their family, friends, and children, they face mounting legal fees, living expenses, and the overwhelming stress of their situation," their GoFundMe reads. "The emotional and financial toll is immense, and they are at risk of losing everything."

"We were trying to pack board shorts and flip flops," Valerie Watson told CBS News . "Packing ammunition was not at all our intent."

The Watsons did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider through their GoFundMe.

Eight US tourists prosecuted since February

It is illegal to bring firearms or ammunition into Turks and Caicos, and penalties apply regardless of the offender's status or country of origin, according to the local attorney general's chambers.

Several tourists caught under this law were previously let off with just a fine, while at least one was given a prison sentence under the minimum limit.

But in February, a court of appeal ordered that all offenders be given at least the minimum sentence of 12 years in prison.

At least eight tourists from the US have since been prosecuted under this rule, per the attorney general's chambers.

Another American tourist, 31-year-old Tyler Wenrich , was charged on Tuesday with possessing ammunition after he arrived in Turks and Caicos on a cruise ship, according to local police.

"While going through a security checkpoint, it was discovered Mr Wenrich allegedly had ammunition in his possession," a police statement said.

Amid the recent spate of tourist arrests, the US State Department published a September advisory warning US citizens that it wouldn't be able to secure their release if they brought firearms and ammo into Turks and Caicos.

"We strongly encourage you to carefully check your luggage for stray ammunition or forgotten weapons before departing for TCI," the advisory said.

The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider.

Tourism is a key revenue for Turks and Caicos, and in 2019 provided about $787 million, or 65% of the island's GDP, to the territory, per a 2023 report by the Commonwealth Chamber of Commerce.

The Caribbean archipelago is a popular port of call for US cruise ships, and this year has seen a 127% jump in tourist arrivals — the largest increase in the world — compared to 2019, the United Nations World Tourism Organization said in February.

ANI news agency shared a video showing an Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopter taking water from Bhimtal as several hectares of forest in the Uttarakhand region has been gripped in the fire.

The Uttarakhand government has roped in the Indian Army and IAF in controlling the fire in Nainital and other nearby regions.

On IAF chopper dousing the forest fires, Nainital Municipal Corporation Executive Officer Rahul Anand said, "Fire is reported in Nainital in many places, including very close to the Air Force Station in the district. The main purpose of bringing in helicopters to douse the fire was to keep the Air Force Station safe... The situation is under control now. Efforts are continuing."

"The forest fires are a challenge for us. This is a big fire. We are working for all the essential needs. We have asked for help from the Army... I am going to conduct a meeting in Haldwani today. We have conducted a meeting in Dehradun also regarding this. We will try to control the fire as soon as possible," Dhami said.
