This waterway travels 50 kilometers in India until Tulail Valley, where its length bumps up to 195 more kilometers; in Pakistan, it meets with the Jhelum River at Muzaffarabad. 

From origins at the base of Lake Satian, which is present within the state of Indian Jammu and Kashmir, this waterway winds through both parts of Kashmir, including places such as Gurez Valley and other various points in between, before meeting its end at Muzaffarabad.

Neelum Valley

Neelum Valley is a near-forest valley in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The valley is also known as one of the best weekend getaways from Islamabad and is named after the Neelum River that runs through it. It is impossible to visit the region without taking in the scenery this place offers. In addition to natural attractions, the valley is home to numerous small towns and provides plenty of hiking, trekking, and mountain climbing opportunities. Here you can visit the villages of Kel and Taobat and the tourist spots of Arang Kel, Kutton, and Keran. 

Located in Neelum Valley, Kel is the base camp for several excursions within the valley, including the 3-hour treacherous trek to Arang Kel, where you can admire the Nanga Parbat nestled in snowy mountains. You can go to the village Kel from several other regional glacial lakes.

Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project

The Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Plant was part of a run-of-the-river hydroelectric power scheme in AJK, Pakistan. It is designed to expel water from the Neelum River to a power station of the Jhelum River, which is 42 km (26 mi) south of Muzaffarabad. The powerhouse design ensures it can still provide electricity during floods or droughts. It has an installed capacity of 969 MW.

Nergola Waterfall at Azad Kashmir

Located 120 kilometers from Rawalpindi, Nergola Waterfall offers a refreshing escape during the heat of summer. With the bumpy ride being worth it to gain this experience, people are often inclined to stop by while exploring the area. The waterfalls stand just outside Rawalakot City and are accessible through a short fifteen-minute hike or walk up/downhill from the nearest point on the main road where visitors have parked their vehicles. This national park covers an area measuring around 3,00 square kilometers.

The land here is well-known for its rich flora and fauna from the Pir Panjal ecoregion; during springtime, this ecosystem bursts with colorful blooms! Panjal Mastan possesses a subtropical highland climate (Cwb). Patlian Lake

Patlian Lake is a mile-high beauty in Neelum Valley, Azad Kashmir. A turn-off from Lawat leads through forests before reaching Ratti Gali; then Patlian lies about another few kilometers after the third turn. This route passes through acres of pines and other kinds of trees on both sides, leading up to the mountain slopes, which form a series of crests rising towards us across tree-carpeted slopes that emerge into valleys. At the same time, patches remain covered with snow even during summer as they stretch higher. The extent to which ice lingers all year long can be judged best when in July or August, we find it still blanketing some slops near the topmost ridge where sunlight reaches hardly or not at all!

Pir Chinasi at Azad Kashmir

Pir Chinasi (also called Peer Chinasi) is a famous Muslim religious site located nearly 30 miles from Muzaffarabad, the capital city of Azad Kashmir, administered by Pakistan. It exists at the top of Mount Pir Chinasi. The mountain peak has seen tremendous popularity for its pilgrimage to a famous Saint – Sayed Hussain Shah Bukhari. The hill station of Pir Chinasi resides high up at an altitude of 9,500 feet above sea level and provides fantastic sights of the town below with all its lush greenery. Visitors may enjoy camping trips to Pir Chinasi to explore nature’s beauty. Tourists also come here to view the hidden city of Muzaffarabad and the rural villages surrounding it. Furthermore, residents are known for paragliding off this mountain and doing snow-cross Jeep rallies.

Pir Lasura National Park

Pir Lasura National Park, located in Pakistan, has been recognized as a national park since 2005. A rapid evaluation during the summer of 2010 revealed that 159 different plant species within 83 other plant families exist across diverse habitats- trees, bushes, herbs, grasses, and epiphytes. There were also 16 warm-blooded creatures, 119 flying creatures, 24 reptiles, six land animals, including amphibians and fish, and 15 butterfly species. The research concludes that Pir Lasura National Park deserves immediate conservation efforts because it contains high levels of biodiversity that need prompt conservation measures, such as soil biota and animal/plant parasites. At the same time, additional detailed studies could explore lesser-known animals and plants from this area. It is a place worth visiting in the area. It is situated around 200 kilometers from Muzaffarabad vis Kohala.

Quaid-e-Azam Tourist Lodge at Azad Kashmir

Quaid-e-Azam Tourist Lodge, Barsala, is a historic tourist lodge in Kohala. Muzaffarabad District, Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. The tourist point was also known as Quaid-e-Azam Memorial Rest House for being the place where Muhammad Ali Jinnah stayed during his visit here back in 1944. The lodge is still famous because of its proximity to essential attractions such as Alpuri Fort and Bakkara – with just 13 km (8 mi) separating them from each other.

Ramkot Fort

Azad Kashmir has a story of old archaeological sites and other ancient attractions that intrigue any history lover. So explore the unique appeal of the fort at Ramkot! 

Ramkot Fort exists near the Mangla Dam in Pakistan. It constructs during the reign of the Delhi Sultanate in 1342. Ramkot Fort is bounded on all sides by the Jhelum River, about 13 kilometers away by boat and about 79 kilometers by road from Mirpur. 

That is Ramkot Fort, representing the construction of modern Muslim military structures built back in the 5th and 9th centuries. The Muslim leaders discovered and demolished the fort during the 17th century, leaving only the area where it stood as an explore-worthy destination for those in the mood to see history up close. Ratti Gali Lake at Azad Kashmir

Ratti Gali Lake is a glacial alpine lake in Neelum Valley, Pakistan. Mountain glacier waters feed the lake at an altitude of 3,683 meters (12,083 ft). Located at a jaw-dropping height above sea level and surrounded by stunning wilderness – probably one of the most attractive mountainous regions in the world – its mild water mass forms due to glaciers activity. 

The crystal clear water and breathtaking landscapes stand out among other natural wonders in Azad Kashmir – locals call it The Jewel of Neelum Valley. Not only is Ratti Gali Lake home to some fantastic wildlife, but it also ranks among many heavenly spots in Azad Kashmir.

Only summer trips are recommended here due to the harsh winters of Rawalakot , the district headquarters. The area looks its best from spring to summer. As a result of the abundant almond blossoms in summer, Rawalakot is also known as ‘Pearl Valley’ because it looks like pearls scattered on the ground. This area’s most popular tourist destinations are Banjosa Lake, Toli Pir, Tatta Pani, and Sudhan Gali.

Red Fort Muzaffarabad at Azad Kashmir

The Red Fort is a 17th-century fortification and palace in Muzaffarabad, Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. Built during the rule of the Chak dynasty, it overlooks the town from a high hilltop. The fort is locally known as the Rutta Qila or just Qila (defense).

While much of the original building has collapsed over time, efforts are underway to restore this historically significant place. Sain Saheli Sarkar Darbar

It was built centuries ago, though there are discrepancies. Regardless, it remains one of the most beautiful shrines you’ll ever see, with its vibrant colors infused into its construction so gracefully; indeed, a sight to behold!

Samwal Sharif

Samwal Sharif is a religious place in Azad Kashmir, south of Sar and east of Dhok Jaral. The miracle place in Samwal Sharif is open for visitors to explore Mirpur’s beauty. An entrance fee does not require for visitors who come here- all one needs to do is spend money on food or anything else worth exploring once they get inside. The visit lasts from noon to 11 PM.

Sharda at Azad Kashmir

When you plan to visit Neelum Valley, Sharda is a must-see site in Azad Kashmir. There are several huts on flat land and beautiful scenery around Sharda. Sharda is located 136 kilometers from Muzaffarabad. Instead, the small city at the base of Neelum Valley leaves behind the beauty and history of the small Tehsil. In the lush green meadows of Neelum Valley, the small town exists at an altitude of 1981 meters. Sharda has many guesthouses and hotels for tourists to relax and enjoy trekking and sightseeing. Sharda Peeth

The Sharda shrine is a temple in the so-called India-occupied Kashmir, located in Sharda Village, the Neelum Valley. Sharda is a green and watery place. A heavy coat of snow makes the village of Sharda white and appealing to the eye. Name after the temple of the goddess Sharada, where a shrine is devoted to her. This tourist spot is ideal because it provides an escape from daily stress and a respite from the balmy weather.

Sharda Wooden Bridge at Azad Kashmir

It’s the perfect destination for researchers and archaeology enthusiasts interested in history, with many guest houses scattered in Sharda Neelum Valley. Tourists will find a beautiful bridge in Sharda known as the Sharda Bridge, with many stores in Sharda Bazar. Many hotels and resorts occupy Sharda Neelum Valley, such as Shangrila Sharda Resort, Kashmir Lodges, Pak River Guest House, and Waadi Resort Sharda Neelum Valley. It is the best tourist place to refresh and bask in the delightful, temperate climate.

Shounter Lake

Reached from Kel in the Neelum Valley, Shounter lake should be your destination if you are into camping. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, the lake is a beautiful sight, but the journey is via jeep only. You’ll enjoy visiting Shounter Lake from May through August, when the weather conditions are perfect for exploring. Located in the picturesque Shouter Valley at 3,100 meters (10,200 feet) above sea level, it provides the ideal spot for trekking enthusiasts and sightseers.

As the lake is surrounded by glacial waters, green grass vegetation, mountains, and specimens of various plants, it takes on a dazzling white color when it is frozen in the winter and covered in thick snow during the winter season. With its high altitude, Shounter Lake can be extremely dangerous due to landslides triggered by heavy snowfall and blizzards. However, if you’re daring enough to test your luck, it’s worth checking out – especially since few places in Pakistan offer such a thrilling landscape – there are only two other lakes located at such heights! And while they may not measure up precisely to what you would find here at Shounter Lake, the photography opportunities do make it worth a visit, nevertheless!

Shounter Valley at Azad Kashmir

Shounter Pass is a sky-scraping mountain pass at 14,501 feet above sea level in Neelum Valley in Azad Kashmir. This stretch of land links Kashmir Kel with GB Astore, and you can reach from double way–Astor to Kel or from Kashmir to Astor. The valley is beautiful; its terrain slightly changes from dense pine forests to vast open valleys with lush green meadows. 

Shounter Valley is in the Upper Neelum Valley of Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. This valley is accessible through a Jeep track that may be open for only a few months. More importantly, this area makes it easy for campers to find solace away from home and offer some respite during these busy times when they’re needed most!

Samahni Valley

The Samahni Valley is located on the LoC (line of control), which separates Azad Kashmir from Jammu and Kashmir. It is 35 kilometers long and about 8 kilometers wide, covering an area of 1270 square kilometers. Most inhabitants speak Pahari with some Punjabi influence; however, Urdu is still spoken and understood among many villagers there. The Samahni Valley consists of fourteen towns spread out across its vast expanse.

Taobat at Azad Kashmir

Ta obat is a town in the Sharda Tehsil region of Neelum Valley, Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. It is located 120 miles from Muzaffarabad and 24 miles from Kel. It is the last stop before entering Pakistani territory on the way to Kargil – the Indian border. In 1998, seven hundred twenty people were living there; this number has grown due to tourism projects in the area bringing new jobs for locals and outside investments fueling growth all over Neelum Valley in recent years.

Throchi Fort

Throchi Fort is located in Choroi Area, Kotli District. It borders Gulpur Town, which falls on the junction of Mirpur and Rawalpindi Roads. Nearest to Throchi is the small village of Throchi within the Nao-Shera Area (region), ten miles from Kotli City – currently under the jurisdiction of Pakistan’s military rule. 

Toli Pir at Azad Kashmir

Toli Pir is a hilltop area in Tehsil Rawalakot in the Poonch District of Azad Jammu Kashmir. Its maximum height is about 8800 ft above sea level and is about 30 km, or a two-hour drive, from Rawalakot in Azad Kashmir. 

You can take an insight into Abbaspur, Bagh, and Poonch Rivers from Toli Pir . Toli Pir is a great mountainous location in the northeastern area of Rawalakot. It is the point of origin for three mountain ridges, with the remains of an old masjid atop its tallest peak. 

Accessible mostly during summer months due to cold temperatures between October through March. In the summer, Toli Pir is an ideal hilltop location for climbing. You cannot miss the spectacular view from the top during your trip to Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Upper Neelum

It’s impossible to fully enjoy your vacation without visiting Upper Neelum Valley! Upper Neelum is 82km from Muzaffarabad and about 2km from Keran. These sites, for nature lovers and adventurers, provide panoramic views of local scenery and are equipped with whirling streams. 

Upper Neelum has a maximum elevation of 1824 meters; as a result, you hear the sound of water down the village and can witness swirling streams. This creates a relaxing atmosphere. There are tourist homes in Azad Kashmir built by the Tourism Department to house visitors who wish to visit other areas of Kashmir. Make sure to attend the Upper Neelum!

Viewpoint Park

Mirpur City will become your favorite place to visit thanks to its breathtaking scenery – which you will see from Viewpoint Park Mirpur! Entry is accessible at all times, but food or other attractions are not, so don’t forget your wallet if you want something!

Viewpoint Park Mirpur opens at noon every day and closes at 11:00 PM, although it changes seasonally, so double-check before going.

Zalzal Lake at Azad Kashmir

Zalzal Lake (also known as the Earthquake Lake) is almost 3.5 kilometers long and 350 feet deep and was created after the earthquake of October 2005, when a mountainside slid into the valley. The quake cut an enormous mountain in the region and blocked off the flow of two nearby streams to create this body of water—the Zalzal lake. This natural lake can be found near Chakaar Hill Resort, a famous retreat spot up north. The water flowing through this body merges with one branch of River Jhelum near Hattian Bala before continuing downstream.

When is the best time to visit Kashmir? There is actually no straight answer to this question because it will depend on what kind of trip you were looking forward to.

If you want to see snow, January and February are ideal times. If you want to see lush green views, September will be the best time. For a honeymoon trip, I will recommend April and September.

If you want to see flowers and the Tulip Garden, you should plan for April. If you want to see Apple orchards, August and September is the best time to go.

For photography, a trip in the post-monsoon season will be best. For budget travelers, August and November are good times to go.

Mobile Network and Data Connectivity

BSNL has the widest network in Kashmir but Airtel is better in terms of the quality of the network. Jio works decently well but the services of Vodafone and Idea are not that great.

I am adding Srinagar first to the list because that is where you will have to go first. Srinagar will be your base to explore the beautiful valleys of Kashmir.

But is it just that? The answer is no.  It is not just a base to explore Kashmir but rather a place that deserves to be explored, a place of both natural and man-made beauty.

Shah Jahan a long time ago aptly called Kashmir the paradise on earth, and Srinagar is the heart of that paradise. With its serene blue lakes and magnificent gardens ringed by an Arc of Majestic Himalayas, it is a picture-perfect town that looks straight out of a painting.

There is just so much to see here and so much to do. This I believe is the very reason that despite all the unrest and tensions, Srinagar continues to remain one of the most visited tourist destinations in our country.

Gulmarg in my opinion is the biggest tourist attraction in Kashmir. Known as the meadow of flowers, it is a heavenly place to tread in that offers mesmerizing landscapes and an enthralling possibility of various adventure activities.

Such is the beauty of this tiny hamlet that it attracts people from all over the country throughout the year. It is possibly one of those destinations where the tourist season never ends.

From families to adventure enthusiasts, Gulmarg has a lot to offer everyone. It not only draws tourists from other parts of the country but also is a favorite weekend getaway for the local Kashmiris as well.

The next destination that you must visit during your Kashmir trip is Sonamarg. The place is easily accessible, remains open for most of the year, has plenty of hotels, offers amazing views, and is perfect for all kinds of trips.

Public transport is also easily available. There is a daily bus between Srinagar and Sonamarg. Other than that, shared cabs also travel on the route regularly.

The name Pahalgam needs no introduction. It is one of the most visited destinations of Kashmir, one that receives tourists all year long. No trip to Kashmir is complete unless Pahalgam is a part of the itinerary.

Located at a distance of about 100 kilometers from Srinagar, Pahalgam is best known for its awe-inspiring vistas, lush green meadows, dense forests, and pristine waters. The place is also noted for the annual pilgrimage to the shrine Amarnath Yatra that starts here in July and August.

But in my opinion, the actual fun of visiting Pahalgam is in the winter season. This is when the natural beauty of this place is at its best. Take a look at the video below to know what I am talking about.

Drung Waterfall

Drung Waterfall, also known as Drang Waterfall or Durung Waterfall, is a destination that must find a place in your itinerary if you are planning a winter trip to Kashmir. It may not be that large in size but the sight that it presents in the winter season is truly majestic and is sure to charm you off your feet.

As the temperature in the valley drops, the water of this fall starts to freeze. By early January, the entire face of the mountain that it falls from is covered by a thick layer of ice. The water still continues to flow down but is surrounded by huge icicles and snow.

The waterfall is located about 42 kilometers from Srinagar and 16 kilometers from Gulmarg. It remains accessible for all 12 months and can easily be included in your trip to Gulmarg. You can visit Drung at any time of the year but it is in the winter season when the waterfall is truly at its best.

Gurez Valley

Gurez Valley is one of the least explored regions of Kashmir and the one that can truly be called an offbeat destination. It is a place of high scenic beauty that does not really get the attention that it truly deserves. The vistas and the natural beauty of the mountains that you see here are very different than what you will see elsewhere.

Usually, when you talk about visiting Kashmir, it is mostly 4 places that come to mind – Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam. Even Srinagar just acts as a base to explore the other three places.

But Kashmir is so much more. There are so many other places here that will leave you mesmerized if visited. Gurez is one such destination that I will highly recommend that you find a place for in your travel plans.

Let us now take a look at some offbeat destinations that do not find a place in everyone’s itinerary but are definitely worth visiting.

Yusmarg is located at a distance of about 50 kilometers from Srinagar in the Badgam district of Kashmir. At an altitude of 2,396 meters (7,861 ft), it is an alpine valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains and meadows of Pine and Fir.

It is one of those places in Kashmir that are immensely beautiful but do not get the attention that they rightfully deserve. But for someone wanting to go offbeat and stay away from the crowd, Yousmarg is perfect.

Doodhpathri

Doodhpathri is a small hill station in Kashmir. It lies in a bowl-shaped alpine valley surrounded by snow-clad mountains and meadows of Pine Fir and Deodar. It sits at an altitude of 2,730 meters (8,957 ft) above sea level and receives heavy snowfall in the winter season.

The region does not have all-year road connectivity yet and in the months of peak winter, it can get very difficult to reach here. For the rest of the year though, a trip to Doodhpathri can actually be made in less than half a day.

To be honest, it is not yet a hill station as there is little to no development in the region. What you see is nature in its raw form. There are just a few houses of the local shepherds and that is the only sign of civilization that you will see here.

The area is largely unexplored and receives very little tourism. However, efforts are being made by the authorities to develop it as a tourist destination. Mughal Road

Not many people would know about the Mughal Road. Srinagar Jammu National Highway, also known as NH44, is often considered to be the only road connecting the cities of Jammu and Srinagar.

It is true that it is indeed a better maintained, wider, more traveled upon, and shorter way to travel between the two places but it is definitely not the only one.

There actually exists another route that is far more scenic, less crowded, takes you through some internal parts of Kashmir, and has existed for far longer than the regular NH44 highway. Yes, I am talking about the historical Mughal road.

This route is the alternate way to travel between Jammu and Srinagar and to reach some internal areas of Kashmir like the town of Rajouri. It is also a very scenic route that definitely deserves to be explored.

Aharbal Waterfall

Aharbal Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Kashmir. It is also the most easily accessible one and yet never crowded. Located at a distance of only about 70 kilometers from Srinagar, it is a place that is amazingly beautiful but does not get the attention that it truly deserves.

If you are planning to visit Kashmir, I highly recommend that you find a day in your itinerary for a visit to Aharbal. How can you plan that is what I have talked about in the article below.

Can you visit Aharbal Waterfall in the winter season? It will depend a lot on the weather at the time of your trip but yes, a trip can be planned. Take a look at this short video below to see how this beautiful waterfall looks in winter.

Daksum Valley

Daksum, also known as Daksum Valley or Daksum Village, is a viewpoint or a picnic spot located on the Anantnag-Kishtwar road near Sinthan Top. Surrounded by lush green mountains and sitting right next to the Bringhi River, it is a popular spot among the locals for family outings and school picnics.

If you are someone who likes spending time in nature, away from the crowd in an offbeat place, Daksum may just be your cup of tea. It really feels like in the middle of nowhere and if you were here during the weekdays, there would hardly be anyone around. For more details, please read How to Plan a Trip to Daksum Valley .

Sinthan Top

Sinthan Top, also known as Sinthan Pass, is a mountain pass located in Kashmir’s Breng Valley, on the road that runs between Anantnag in Kashmir and Kishtwar in Jammu. At an altitude of 12,500 ft, the top of the pass is also known as the 360-degree viewpoint as it offers a charming panoramic view of the surrounding peaks and the valley.

It is a beautiful mountain pass that should find a place in every tourist’s itinerary who is coming toward Pahalgam. Due to its close proximity, Sinthan Top can be easily incorporated with a trip to Pahalgam. The drive from Srinagar to Sinthan Top through the Daksum Valley is also quite scenic and offers a chance to visit some other destinations like Achabal Gardens, Kokernag, and Daksum.

Chatpal Valley

Chatpal, also called Chattabal, is not really a name that many tourists know about. It is a small valley located near Pahalgam but while Pahalgam receives thousands of visitors each year, almost no one goes in the direction of Chatpal. It is one of those places in Kashmir that are still unexplored and yet to find their place on the tourist map.

The majority of the folks you will find in Chatpal will just be the locals from Anantnag or any of the nearby villages, out there for a picnic or a family outing. Even they visit Chattabal usually over the weekends, on Sundays. For the rest of the week, you will hardly see anyone there.

Public Transport in Kashmir

The best way to travel to Kashmir is either by your self-owned vehicle or a private taxi. But if you are a budget traveler, you can also opt for public transport which is available in the form of buses and shared taxis. The problem however is that it is not frequent.

It will be hard to find a JKSRTC bus anywhere in Kashmir. You will have to rely on mini-buses and shared cabs operated by the locals. They do not have a set schedule or timetable but are available throughout the day.

If you are planning on renting a taxi for your trip, the posts below can help you get a cost estimate. An important thing that you should remember is that places like Pahalgam and Gulmarg have their own taxi rates.

What it means is that if you rented a taxi to Pahalgam from Srinagar, it could only drop you in Pahalgam. To visit local places like Betaab Valley, Chandanwari, and Aru Valley, you will have to rent a local cab in Pahalgam.

The same rule applies to Gulmarg. If you want to go for a drive to Bota Pathri, you will have to rent another cab in Gulmarg for that.

Renting a Bike

Renting a bike in Srinagar is a great way to explore for people who reach Kashmir by flight. There are a few bike rentals in the city which you can get the bikes from.

Food to Try in Kashmir

Your trip to not just Kashmir but any place is incomplete unless you have tasted the local cuisine. That in my opinion is actually one of the best parts of traveling to different places.

You can take a taxi for 5 days but if you are planning a trip in winter, then you will have to change at Tangmarg. For rest of the year, it can be the same cab.

1. Razdan Pass usually remains open in Oct. Scorpio / Innova will be better but it depends on the number of people traveling 2. Yeah, the scenery is more or less similar 3. Same on one day will be hectic. Doodhpathri is better

For Chakwali route, you will have to hire a Sumo from Dawar. The drivers from Srinagar usually refuse to go on that route due to extremely bad roads. A hatchback or a Sedan driver will definitely not go

Dear All, This is the review about Kashmironline. We booked on a package in this summer for a family through them, but the hotel which they have opted in Srinagar was not good. No power to stay, no water and no hot water as well. We have to ask for all service every now and then. But upfront the agency collects the payment. Also, they never respond. The reason for booking through a travel agent is that we will not have issues and it will be a safe travel, but here its very bad, there will be a response saying that they will do, but nothing will happen. Remember people travelling to Srinagar / Kashmir make sure you are clear on package, would recommend to make arrangements on your own. Do not depend on any travel agents. Specially Kashmironline at all. They are not friendly and held me in a hotel to pay the final amount. Never trust on any customer and they do not need any customer satisfaction. I have informed very clearly the balance 7-8% (Approx 9000) of amount will be paid on last day of my travel in morning, irrespective of telling and informing the same, they holded in the hotel in the lobby asking for balance payment two days prior itself. The agency called up the hotel informed that before I leave collect the balance money. That looks very bad in front of others asking for money as if am going to move away without paying from them. My only question is if you guys or agency never trust on customer, how do you expect the customer to trust you. If something goes wrong, you will never revert back right. Now, I had a bad and worst stay in Srinagar, they never responded to me anything about that at all. The kashmironline person was apologizing but nothing happened. The issues repeated thrice for all 3 days of stay, our stay was ruined. We went for sight-seeing late for all 3 days and we are not provided with basic necessity of things to stay. Irrespective of informing that Iam not comfortable on the first day itself. Please be aware of these things in Kashmir. Never book though kashmironline at all. They never bother about any feedback or comfortable stay of customer. Only money is important. The driver they organized doesn’t even have a courtesy and he dropped us the railway station by 9pm and have requested him to take me to 5km nearby for dinner which he denied. He never answered any calls after dropping us. Irrespective of informing that we need to have dinner before dropping us, he never bothered that Iam with 2 kids without food travelling for whole night. He was keen on moving away since the money is fully paid a day prior. Important is he knows entire story of this issue. They never change and felt bad for booking with them. Entire trip is ruined and I have give other hint to save other atleast, not to get cheated. 2 and 3 days is a bit much. Gulmarg 1 day, Sonamarg 1 day and Pahalgam 1 night should be more than enough. You can spend rest of your time visiting other places.

What a great Blog. Covers almost everything. The best part is that it is not commercial blogs, which generally have an interest in the places they mention. You have written in simple language and from your first-hand experience. I am a Sr. Citizen and also handicapped. I use an artificial limb, but mobility is not an issue (maybe rocky climbing and snow/water). I do travel a lot. My question is: Will you recommend Gondola Phase I and II? My Travel Agent has custom-built an Itinerary for my wife and me using taxis only for the 2 of us. I was told that there is a Union issue and private taxis are not allowed in Gulmarg and Pahalgam and I will have to book local taxis there.

Please advise keeping my handicap in mind. Thanks.

If you are going to stay in Gulmarg overnight, then yes, I will recommend the Gondola ride. If you are just planning a day trip, it will be best to skip it.

You do not need to rent another taxi in Gulmarg for sightseeing. They may ask to take you to Bota Pathri by renting another cab but avoid that. There is nothing there. All the other places in Gulmarg are near the market area. No additional taxi is needed.

Yes, you will have to rent another taxi in Pahalgam for local sightseeing. Srinagar taxi will not be allowed there.

There are so many very well known and most liked temples in Kashmir I didn’t find any mention of these temples and places in your article is there any particular reason or you missed it In case you need any help to draw your attention towards those places I can do that

I have a mobility issue. Though I drive but I walk with crutches and small distances only. I followed your blog on Prashar Lake and you had clarified all my concerns so well that I drove upto the last possible point without any issue and then a little walk to the point from where the lake is visible. Though I didn’t trek down to the lake and temple. That was little too much for me.

Anyway, I am now planning to drive to Kashmir in Sept 1st week and plan to spend 3 days each at Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg. I wanted to ask you how long is the walks at various gardens in Srinagar. I also plan to do Doodhpatri, Yousmarg and Achabal.

Is there too much to walk in Phase 1 and 2 of Gandola, also Sonmarg, Kokernag, Daksum areas? I will be thankful if you can reply to me and help me plan better.

As Narendra Modi seeks a third term as prime minister, India’s rupture with China looms over a pillar of his campaign: making his country a major power.

Narendra Modi once looked up to China. As a business-friendly Indian state leader, he traveled there repeatedly to attract investment and see how his country could learn from its neighbor’s economic transformation. China, he said , has a “special place in my heart.” Chinese officials cheered on his march to national power as that of “a political star.”

But not long after Mr. Modi became prime minister in 2014, China made clear that the relationship would not be so easy. Just as he was celebrating his 63rd birthday by hosting China’s leader, Xi Jinping — even sitting on a swing with him at a riverside park — hundreds of Chinese troops were intruding on India’s territory in the Himalayas, igniting a weekslong standoff.

A decade later, ties between the world’s two most populous nations are almost completely broken. Continued border incursions flared into a ferocious clash in 2020 that threatened to lead to all-out war. Mr. Modi, a strongman who controls every lever of power in India and has expanded its relations with many other countries, appears uncharacteristically powerless in the face of the rupture with China.

As Mr. Modi seeks a third term in an election that begins on Friday, the tensions weigh heavily on the overarching narrative of his campaign: that he is making India a major global power and, by extension, restoring national pride. Far from the 2,100-mile border, along every avenue where India seeks to expand, China looms as a fierce competitor.

In India’s own backyard in South Asia, China has used its vast resources — the fruits of economic reforms introduced decades before India’s — to challenge Indian pre-eminence, courting partners through infrastructure deals and gaining access to strategic ports.

More broadly, China and India are vying to lead the developing nations of the so-called global south. When India hosted the Group of 20 summit last year, using it to showcase its support of poorer countries, Mr. Xi skipped the event. China has also been a major roadblock in India’s campaign to gain a coveted permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council.

“Today, you encounter an India which perhaps you had never seen before, in many senses,” said Nirupama Menon Rao, a former Indian ambassador to China and the United States. “I think the Chinese are increasingly aware of it, and they would still like to pull us down, to create barriers.”

India’s estrangement with China has provided an opening for Western nations to expand defense and economic ties with New Delhi, a distressing development for Beijing.

India signed a series of deals with the United States last year to strengthen military cooperation . India has also drawn closer to the other two members of the so-called Quad, Australia and Japan, as the group works to counter China’s projection of power.

In addition, India sees an opportunity as the United States and Europe look for alternatives to China as a place to make their products. One early success has been sharply increased production of iPhones in India.

But even with these openings, China continues to expose Indian insecurities. The Chinese economy is about five times the size of India’s, and China remains India’s second-biggest trade partner (after the United States), exporting about six times as much to India as it imports. China spends more than three times what India does on its military, giving its forces a significant advantage across land, sea and air.

The Indian military, which has long struggled to modernize, is now forced to be conflict-ready on two fronts , with China to India’s east and archrival Pakistan to its west.

Tens of thousands of troops from both India and China remain on a war footing high in the Himalayas four years after the deadly skirmishes broke out in the disputed Eastern Ladakh region, where both countries have been building up their military presence. Nearly two dozen rounds of negotiations have failed to bring disengagement.

Although the political opposition has tried to paint Mr. Modi as weak in the face of Chinese encroachment, the border incursions are unlikely to hurt him much politically, given the lack of news coverage from a largely sympathetic Indian media .

Still, Mr. Modi has had to prioritize billions of dollars for border infrastructure and military upgrades as India still struggles to cover the basic needs of its 1.4 billion people. His government is drawing up plans to repopulate hundreds of border villages as a second line of defense against the constant threat of Chinese encroachment.

S. Jaishankar, Mr. Modi’s external affairs minister, admitted recently that there were “no easy answers” to the dilemma posed by India’s aggressive neighbor. “They are changing, we are changing,” Mr. Jaishankar said . “How do we find an equilibrium?”

In a book published in 2020, just as he had taken over as Mr. Modi’s trusted foreign policy architect, Mr. Jaishankar wrote that the tensions between the United States and China set “the global backdrop” for India’s choices in a “world of all against all.” India’s ambitions as a major power, he wrote, would require a juggling act: “engage America, manage China, cultivate Europe, reassure Russia.”

India’s rise as a large, growing economy has allowed it to hold its ground — working with any partner it can benefit from — in a polarized and uncertain world.

Even as India has expanded defense ties with the United States and doubled bilateral trade over the past decade, to about $130 billion in goods alone, it has resisted American pressure to reconsider its strong relations with Russia. India has deepened connections with Europe and the Middle East, too; trade with the United Arab Emirates alone has reached $85 billion.

While India remains wary of becoming a pawn in the West’s fight with Beijing, and has not forgotten its frosty history with the United States, China has become an unavoidable focus after being a secondary threat for much of modern Indian history.

India’s socialist founding prime minister was accommodating of Communist China, but the bonhomie was shattered by a monthlong war in 1962 that left thousands dead. The relationship began to normalize in the 1980s even as incursions continued, and open channels of communication kept tensions down and elevated trade.

“It was a different China,” said Ms. Rao, the former top diplomat.

The situation changed in the years before Mr. Modi took office, she said. As its economy soared, China began flexing its muscles — investing heavily in its Belt and Road infrastructure initiative, which India saw as threatening its security and spheres of influence, and moving more aggressively on its borders and in the Indian Ocean.

Still, Mr. Modi, blacklisted by the United States when he was a state leader over his role in bloody religious riots, continued to extend a hand to Beijing. As prime minister, he did not allow the embarrassment of the Chinese incursion in 2014 to dampen his red-carpet welcome to Mr. Xi. His subtle message — a warning that “a little toothache can paralyze the entire body” — carried the hope that Mr. Xi would come around.

That hope ended with the deadly 2020 clash in Eastern Ladakh. Now, it is clear that New Delhi is resigned to a long-term threat from China, a shift evident in Mr. Modi’s push for road and tunnel construction in border areas to support a large troop presence.

Over the past five years, more than 2,200 miles of roads have been built along the border. In the Kashmir region, over 2,000 workers have been busy for three years digging a high-altitude tunnel that will improve connectivity to Ladakh.

When the tunnel project, which will cost more than $850 million, is completed, it will ensure that traffic moves year round, and reduce travel time by hours.

“For four months, the supplies to the Indian Army were cut off because the road would get closed,” said Harpal Singh, the project head. “After this tunnel is complete, that will not happen again.”

Mr. Modi’s government is also trying to revive hundreds of villages along the border to fortify defenses.

Through a program called Vibrant Villages, the government is working to develop infrastructure, extend services and nurture tourism in the hope of reversing the economic migration that created “ghost villages.”

“What India could have done in the last 20 years, they have to do now in two,” said ​​Sonam Murup, a retired Indian Army officer from Ladakh, referring to infrastructure development in his area.

“Our situation is much better now,” he said. “But when you look toward the Chinese side, you can see villages full of lights.”
