Kayak Greece!

A mothership-kayaking adventure in the dodecanese islands.

After lots of taste-testing, early morning swims , paddles along rugged coastlines and forays into gorgeous white stone villages we have created an unforgettable mothership kayaking journey into Greece’s Eastern Aegean — one of Earth’s most stylish and stunning places.

These islands are geologically and historically diverse — each one feels like its own individual, with an ancient and complex history. Encounter the amazing blend of architectural styles and cultural leave-behinds: Classic Greek and Roman ruins, Crusaders castles, grandiose public buildings from the Italian era, and peasant villages where time stands still.

Based on personal experience , not all dates are created equal when it comes to the Aegean. We’ve chosen a time of year when there are fewer tourists and the weather has cooled off from its summer high, but the ocean is still warm — so it feels like we have the place (and all its wonders) to ourselves.

Our adventure begins on Rhodes Island, in its medieval Old Town . We’ve chosen to stay in a stunning boutique hotel steeped in history: dating back to the 15th Century, it was once a Knight’s residence and has now been painstakingly restored. Then we board our faithful mothership, a gorgeous classic gulet. With her experienced and friendly crew at the helm, we navigate the waters of the exquisite Dodecanese Islands in comfort and style.

By kayak and SUP we explore the remote nooks and crannies of this rugged coastline, pausing to lie on beaches or swim in the warm emerald water. On foot, we follow goat paths to ancient ruins, then rest on the shady porches of tavernas, sipping ouzo and savoring Mediterranean fare with the locals.

And of course, the best moment of all : clinking glasses of chilled Greek wine aboard our lovely mothership as the sunset humbles us with its beauty.

Sample Itinerary

Kayak Greece is a stylish adventure that takes you through the beautiful, remote Dodecanese Islands in the Aegean Sea, and deep into Mediterranean culture and history. Each island has its own special character and wonderful coastlines and bays to explore by kayak. You paddle, SUP and swim in waters warmed by a long summer, wander through the narrow lanes of ancient villages, savor local delicacies in the shade of grape vines and bougainvillea, and relax aboard a gorgeous mothership. This is Greece at its very best!

We meet on Rhodes Island, in one of Europe’s most magnificently preserved medieval towns. After settling into our boutique hotel, a beautifully restored 15th century mansion, we wander along timeless cobblestone lanes to a special restaurant for our welcome dinner.

We have a walking tour of Rhodes Old Town in the morning, and then some time explore on our own before boarding our mothership in the late afternoon.

Day 3 – 9

Rather than set a precise itinerary we let our whims and the weather plot the course. Some of the islands we visit are as follows:

Kalki – A huge castle of the Knights of St. John dominates this small island, and is well worth the hike. We also explore some of Kalki’s bays and beaches by kayak.

Symi – Sometimes described as ‘the island the rich and famous are trying to keep secret! It has a beautiful steep-sided harbour surrounded by grand Italian villas from earlier prosperity derived from shipbuilding and sponge fishing.

Nissyros – This circular island is far more lush and green than its neighbours, yet has a live bubbling, steaming volcanic crater in its centre. It also boasts a Knights’ castle and other ancient ruins.

Tilos – One of the less visited islands of the region. Here dwarf elephants standing 4 ft at the shoulder thrived until 4000 years ago. This of course caught our attention and we see their remains at the island’s only museum.

This is just a sample! We’ll keep our options open and allow the magic to unfold.

In the morning we disembark our mothership in Rhodes Harbor. After bidding farewell to our crew and our newfound friends, we transfer to the airport for homeward or onward flights. Please note: this itinerary serves as an example of trip highlights and is subject to change.

We think of our itineraries as melodies: they have a beginning and an end, a certain arc, dramatic highlights and a few surprises. We like to improvise, to adapt to the mood of our guests or to circumstances that arise — an invitation to a traditional wedding, say, or a local ethnic festival…

Crafting beautiful, harmonious trips with delightful twists is our trade mark and passion.

What is so special about Greece?

Ah, let us count the ways! The islands we explore are spectacular – each one with its own special landscapes and character. Add to that the astonishing layers of ancient history that we literally paddle by and/or hike to: all set in a quintessentially Mediterranean landscape dotted with pines and groves of olives, figs, lemons and pomegranates. The warmth and hospitality of the Greek people is unparalleled, and their cuisine is fabulous: we wager that by the end of the trip you’ll be hooked on Greek breakfasts of fresh yogurt drizzled with local honey, free range boiled eggs, tomato salad, olives and pastries. And then there is lunch and dinner and…. oh, did we mention Greek coffee and delicious local wines? To burn off the calories we paddle, SUP, swim and walk – and there is always the option of relaxing aboard our luxurious private yacht, and watching this wonderful part of the world go by.

How do I get there?

You fly to Rhodes Airport, which you can reach from London and other European hubs.

What are the physical activities on the trip and what level of fitness do I need?

A reasonable level of fitness is required. Typically, we have two kayak excursions a day, each for approximately one and a half to two and a half hours. We have a cultural walking tour in Rhodes Old Town, as well as some hiking in the islands over easy to medium terrain. In our protected anchorages we can swim from the mothership, and try stand up paddle boarding on the two SUPs we will have along.

I'm more into physical activity than my travelling partner, is that a problem?

One of the beauties of Hidden Places trips is that they offer a great deal of flexibility in terms of activities. If one of you isn’t so keen on kayaking, or if you just feel like taking a break, you can relax on the yacht and enjoy the spectacular scenery as you sail to our rendezvous point.

I'm a vegetarian, is that a problem?

Not at all, but please let us know in advance, and advise us on your dietary preferences.

Do I need a visa?

No, but please ensure your passport is valid for 6 months after your entry date.

Do I need insurance?

Medical insurance, including emergency evacuation, is mandatory on all our trips. We also strongly advise you to purchase trip cancellation insurance: make sure it will cover the Land Cost, not just the airfare in case you do have to cancel.

Do I need vaccinations?

Your routine vaccinations (tetanus/diphtheria, polio, etc.) should be up to date.

Are bugs a problem?

In general, not at all, however, it’s always worth having some insect repellent along with you on land.

What does the trip price cover?

Airport transfers on the first and last days of the trip, all cultural tour guiding and entrance fees, all accommodation, kayak guiding, instruction and equipment, all meals, and water.

What does the trip price not cover?

International and domestic flights, beverages except bottled drinking water, personal insurance and gratuities.

How can I access cash when I’m on the trip?

ATMs are readily available in Rhodes and most of the smaller harbours we visit. Please ensure you have a card with a 4-digit pin number.

What clothes and equipment will I need?

When you sign up for the trip, we will provide you with a comprehensive clothes and equipment list.

I’m travelling alone, is that a problem?

Absolutely not. We have many guests who travel with us on their own. They appreciate the camaraderie of our Hidden Places groups, and usually go home with newfound friends. You can opt to share hotel rooms or you can request a single room for a Single Supplement. On board the mothership single accommodation is subject to availability and will require a separate supplement.

Can I talk to someone who has previously travelled with you?

Of course. Just ask and we will be happy to put you in touch with one of our Hidden Places guests.

A relaxing time with outdoor exercise and a chance to meet new travelling friends. We loved the warm seas, blue skies, wonderful old architecture and funky coastal villages. The boat and the crew were lovely and we had such a fine variety of foods.

The best birthday in years! Thank you for another special adventure.

Things to know

How about an unforgettable odyssey in the cradle of European civilization? Crete is ready whenever you are. With a kayak as our primary mode of transport, we’ll navigate the crystal-clear Aegean Sea, hike through the otherworldly Samaria Gorge, and marvel at the phenomenally preserved remnants of the Bronze Age Minoan civilization. No doubt about it, this will be an adventure of a lifetime!

The calm Aegean Sea paired with expert guides is an ideal setting for first-time kayakers

Your life doesn’t have to be in ruins to join this tour, but you can count on iconic and significant ruins of the Bronze Age

Explore Matala’s nomadic homes of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, and Cat Stevens

Ditch the overcrowded Santorini and Mykonos, the island of Crete is the true star of the Greek archipelago. By joining this 8-day kayaking and hiking tour, you will paddle through the waters of the Aegean Sea, marvel at spectacular scenery daily, and soak in the local atmosphere. Don’t worry if you’ve never kayaked—this trip is beginner and family-friendly! Explore this wonder of an island, taste the delicious Greek food, and spend nights in family-owned inns. You’re just a few clicks away from spending the next summer in Greece!

Your Crete adventure officially begins at 10 am, which is when you’ll meet your guides or the company staff at the Heraklion Airport! Drive to Knossos, a city in ancient Greece, the capital of the legendary king Minos, and the center of Minoan civilization.

Keep on driving across Crete down to the beach town of Matala on the south coast. There will be a kayak outfitting session followed by welcome drinks while viewing the incredible sunset. Get to know your guides and your team over your first delightful dinner together at an authentic Greek taverna, where you will review the itinerary for the trip and get answers to any questions you may have.

Meals: Dinner Accommodation: Family-owned inn

Knossos Palace ruins

After breakfast, everyone will be outfitted with a paddle, PFD (personal floatation device) and a sprayskirt, and then head to the beach for a basic kayaking instruction session. The protected bay in Matala provides you with an ideal intro location, surrounded by the famous “hippie” caves—which were once home to Joni Mitchell, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, and many others in the ‘60s.

Following a morning paddle session, paddle to two neighboring beaches, Red Beach and Kommos Beach. After enjoying lunch at Kommos Beach, return to Matala for some cliff jumping into the bay and a highly-recommended Sunset Hike. The day ends with a delicious meal (as always) and a chance to experience the exciting nightlife of Matala.

Early start today! Visit the breathtaking site of the Minoan Palace of Phaistos on your way to the trailhead for the Samaria Gorge—a must see for everyone visiting Crete. This incredible national park draws thousands of visitors every day, but your guides have designed the itinerary to be able to experience the Gorge after the vast majority of hikers have already headed down.

While most visitors to the Samaria Gorge rush to catch the last ferry, you will spend the night in Agia Roumeli, a charming and traditional town where the Gorge ends. Celebrate your accomplishments over dinner on a seaside terrace of your hotel on the beach, and fall asleep to the sounds of waves crashing against the shore.

kayaking tour greece

Wake up to the gentle ringing of goat bealls from the herds on the hillside. Depart from Agia Roumeli in your kayak and head along the coastline to Agios Pavlos for a cappuccino stop. The small 10th-century Byzantine chapel built in honor of St. Paul is a remarkable site. From there, continue along the coastline to Marmara Beach, a fantastic lunch stop offering additional cliff-jumping opportunities from the wind-carved marble rocks.

Paddle to the water-access-only town of Loutro, where you will spend the next two nights. Rounding the point to catch your first glimpse of this idyllic town has been a highlight of the trip for all past participants! No more details are necessary—you’ll just have to see it for yourself.

Loutro, kayaking in Crete

Today you have multiple options! From Loutro, you may continue up the coastline to Sweetwater Beach, where freshwater springs bubbling out of the sand provide a truly unique experience. After stretching your legs, enjoy a refreshing swim stop and a cup of cappuccino. You can then paddle on to Hora Sfakion for your lunch stop before paddling back to Loutro.

Another option is a challenging full-day hike up into the traditional villages in the hills, and then descending through the beautiful Aradena Gorge before walking back to Loutro through ancient olive groves. Then you join up for another Sunset Hike to the Turkish fortress overlooking the harbor followed by dinner at yet another bayside taverna.

Sweetwater beach in Crete

You can either paddle to Hora Sfakion or hike the trail which follows the coastline. You will then continue paddling or shuttle by van along the coast to the Venetian-era fortress at Frangokastello for a brief tour before continuing the journey along the coast to the town of Plakias.

Plakias has an upbeat nightlife and some great shopping opportunities as well as one of your guides’ favorite bakeries on the island—the Cretan Specialty. Dinner is on your own tonight as there’s a large selection of fantastic restaurant possibilities in town. Maybe even go dancing at a local nightclub, but remember that it’s an early paddling morning tomorrow!

Meals: Breakfast Accommodation: Family-owned inn

Frangokastello in Crete

Heading out of Plakias, next stop is Palm Beach! This is where Cretan palms line a picturesque stream joining the sea. An optional short paddle up the inland freshwater creek provides a glimpse of river turtles and local birds.

After lunch, paddle on to the beach at Agios Pavlos. At this point, you can opt to shuttle the last section or paddle the final 7-mile (11-kilometer) stretch (making the total day mileage +20 miles / +32 km!). In the evening, celebrate with a final dinner overlooking the harbor at Agia Galini.

Sunset in Crete

Those wishing to complete the paddling circle may choose to launch early in the morning and paddle across the bay from Agia Galini to Matala (approximately 8 miles / 13 km in an open water crossing). Others can sleep in and board a van to Matala where you’ll have a brief stop to pick up any luggage you may have chosen to leave at the hotel, unload boats, and do some last-minute shopping.

The van will depart for Heraklion between 11 am and noon, giving you enough time to visit the renowned Heraklion Archeological Museum before catching late afternoon and evening flights back home.

Meals: Breakfast

Two kayakers in Crete

As with all adventure travel, some activities are dependent on appropriate wind and water conditions. But fear not, your guides have many alternative activities available in case the weather is not cooperating.

Crete was more than I expected. It just got better every day. I will never forget the Samarian Gorge-the options of kayaking or hiking was so nice. My hope is that I can do another adventure trip with NWP. You are all the BEST! Thank you, thank you.

As the tour busses go by with large crowds, I am so grateful for our personal, delightful, challenging yet nurturing kayaking and hiking group. This brings the Crete people and land and heritage to a very personal level. I couldn’t imagine any other way to go. Thanks

Thanks for the introduction to Crete- its stunning landscapes, seascapes, villages and people. Your appreciation of this land permeates the whole experience. I leave feeling competent, healthy, exuberant. May others find much joy in your good hands.

Experiencing a week of sea kayaking in the Mediterranean is what drew me to this trip. We do not do much sea kayaking in Ohio! Being in the water and paddling past spectacular scenery was exactly what we had hoped for. An added bonus was the quality of people we met on this trip – a good group of like-minded people set on a good adventure! And did we have an adventure! Thank you!”

A wonderful trip for the “old” and “young”. I hope to play with you guys again. Beautiful country, scenery, the joy of visiting this wonderful country and seeing it from a “fluid” perspective. A fantastic time! Experience Crete to its fullest. Do everything you can. When in doubt- go for it! Special thanks to Rick and the guides for making every day special. A fantastic honeymoon. Tour Description

During our unique Kefalonia and Ithaca Sea Kayaking Tour, you will explore a spectacular coastline and some of the most beautiful villages of the Ionian islands. We paddle a big part of the dramatic west coast of Kefalonia and most of Ithaca, home of Odysseus. This sensational journey gives us also the opportunity to explore both islands and hike to some of the most interesting parts of them. A wonderful trip for everyone who loves kayaking and being out in nature, but also appreciates the comfort of some nice, cosy rooms every night!

Level of difficulty

  • Easy-moderate, suitable for everybody with good physical condition and swimming knowledge.
  • Paddling Distance: 57 nautical miles
  • Previous Sea-Kayaking experience required

Day 1 Arrival day

Pick up service and settlement at your guesthouse. Equipment preparation and briefing about our Kefalonia and Ithaca sea kayaking tour.

Day 2 Aghia Kyriaki - Assos

Our paddling adventure in the Greek islands starts in Aghia Kiriaki, a tiny fishing port in the west coast of Kefalonia. Huge limestone cliffs and remoteness are the characteristics of the landscape. On the way, we visit sea caves and we make our lunch stop in the famous Myrtos bay, one of the most photographed beaches in Greece and setting of some of “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” scenes! What better way to start this glorious sea kayaking adventure!

We continue paddling north towards Assos, a magnificent fishing village located in the isthmus of Assos peninsula. The cypress trees and pines that cover the surrounding hills, the impressive limestone cliffs and the perimetric fortress on the peninsula, create a breathtaking scenery, full of colours and contrasts.

Assos is our overnight stop. Beautiful apartments with great views, strolling around the old village, hiking up to the castle and dinner in a taverna by the sea complete this stunning day! O/N in Assos / Paddling distance: 8 nm

Day 3 Assos - Dafnoudi - Fiskardo

We kayak along the breathtaking coastline. The scenery remains remote with limestone cliffs and sea caves. Stop in Dafnoudi bay for swimming and snorkelling. With crystal clear waters and surrounded by cypress trees forest, it is really difficult to describe the beauty and magnificence of this little bay.

We continue kayaking to the famous Fiskardo, a picturesque village that was left untouched by the 1953 earthquake. The traditional houses and the abundant signs of an aristocratic past make it simply unique. One of the biggest tourist attractions of all Ionian islands, Fiskardo is our stop for tonight. O/N in Fiskardo / Paddling distance: 10 nm

Day 4 Fiskardo - Evreti - Daskalio - Fiskardo

This is a relaxing day. We kayak south of Fiskardo, where the scenery here is mainly secluded coves with turquoise waters surrounded by forested hills. We paddle past Phoki bay where a sea cave leads to a maze of tunnels, an abandoned limestone mine. After a while we reach Evreti bay where we can paddle or snorkel over three wrecked fishing caiques. Here we have our lunch. Βefore heading back to Fiskardo we visit Daskalio islet, a seagull rookery that during the right periods offers beautiful sightings of the chicks.

We spend the rest of our day in Fiskardo, visiting the local environmental museum, hiking to the old lighthouse and a ruined byzantine church, shopping or just enjoying our frappe coffee greek-style! O/N in Fiskardo / Paddling distance: 6nm

Day 5 Fiskardo - Aphales - Kioni (Ithaca)

Early in the morning we start paddling to Aphales, a bay in the north Ithaca with a complex of remote beaches with white sand and turquoise waters. The place here is ideal for snorkelling as it offers beautiful underwater rock formations and rich mediterranean water life. Later we paddle along the east coast of the island and we reach Kioni, one of the most pictuesque villages among all Ionian islands and understandably a sailors’ favourite. The three ruined windmills, the trademark of Kioni welcome us as we enter the little port. We enjoy our delightful dinner in a taverna by the sea and we finish our day with a cold beer before heading to our nice accommodation. O/N in Kioni (Ithaca) / Paddling distance: 10 nm

Day 6 Kioni - Vathi

After our mediterranean breakfast, we paddle to Vathi, the capital town of Ithaca. En route, we stop in a little bay for swimming and snorkelling. This is one of the nicest places for snorkeling in the area. We continue and reach Vathi. It is a typical Ionian town, built in the depths of a uniquely shaped fjord-like natural bay. It is indisputably one of the most picturesque natural ports in Greece. We have plenty of time to walk around the narrow streets and alleys of the town before the dinner in a local tavern. The apartments we stay in Vathi is a real gem and one of the trip’s attractions. They are perfectly situated over the bay, enjoying probably the best possible view of Vathi! O/N in Vathi / Paddling distance: 8 nm

Day 7 Vathi - Filiatro - Vathi

Today, we don’t start paddling before early afternoon so we have plenty of time for more shopping, strolling around Vathi’s alleys or just drinking more frappe, which by now you will be addicted to !! We kayak to the beautiful bay of Filiatro along a scenic limestone coastline. There, after we have enjoyed the sea, we leave our boats and hike through a shortcut path back to our accommodation in Vathi. O/N in Vathi / Paddling distance: 5 nm

Day 8 Filiatro - Antisamos (Kefalonia)

Early morning we get transfered to Filiatro bay and we start kayaking around the south coast of Ithaca. After a short break, we paddle the scenic straight between Kefalonia and Ithaca. It is a short, 2-mile crossing. We land to the famous beach of Antisamos (where many scenes of the “Captain Corelli’s mandolin” movie were shot). It is a beautiful bay with forested surrounding hills and crystal clear waters. Our mini bus takes us back to our base in south Kefalonia. O/N in Kefalonia / Paddling distance: 10 nm

Day 9 Departure day

This is the last day of our amazing sea kayaking multi-day tour, however if you wish to end the day before please do let us know and we will transfer you to the airport.

Kayaking In Santorini: Details of a Great Experience

Greek Island Bucket List is an Amazon Associate and participant in other affiliate programmes. I earn from qualifying purchases. Please see my disclaimer for more information.

I did a morning kayaking experience with Serenity Kayak in Santorini and it was an unforgettable experience. If you’re considering doing a Santorini sea kayak tour I recommend it.

At a Glance:

  • This is the kayaking tour I did
  • There’s also a sunset kayak tour which I think would be amazing too
  • Trips last around six hours
  • Groups sizes are kept small, maximum 8 people
  • Cost is about 120 euro depending on which option you go for

What is the Sea Kayak Tour Like in Santorini?

Sea kayaking is a great way to tour and view the dramatic cliffs as they rise up out of the Aegean Sea like a black mountain. The caldera and the unique beaches of Santorini are the main focus of this tour, and you usually get to enter sea caves, too.

The kayaking tours normally have the option of a morning tour or a sunset tour.

Where Do the Kayak Trips Go?

You’ll need to confirm the exact details of your tour. And the route might be altered on the day depending on the weather.  But usually, the kayaking tours run from the southern coast of Santorini and include a combination of Ballos Beach, White Beach, Mesa Pigadia (Black Beach) and/or Red Beach (Akrotiri beach).

What’s Involved in a Kayaking Tour?

I only have experience of Serenty’s tour, but I expect the other sea kayaking tours will follow a similar format. You can always check the details before you book and have a look at reviews.

Arrival and Registration

Kalliopi, the owner and our tour guide, along with her cute little dogs, greeted us at her base near Akrotiri. We were offered tea, coffee and other refreshments to welcome us. The morning was very relaxed and we were treated like family while we filled out a couple of registration forms.

Small white dog with short hair and a bright pink collar

Getting Prepared

And while we were doing the forms the very organised Kalliopi gave us various items for the day. She literally provided everything for us :

  • waterproof sou’wester hat to keep the sun off
  • bottle of water in a special holder for the kayak
  • waterproof pouch to keep our phones dry
  • picnic lunch box
  • life jacket fitted to us

Heading Off

We headed down to Kampia Beach/Kambia Beach, just a few meters away with three kayaks setup waiting for us. There were two couples, me and Kalliopi. Kalliopi showed us how to sit properly in the kayak, how to paddle and how to steer with the peddles.

3 kayaks on the beach on a misty morning with a small white dog and a larger black one

After that, packed the rafts with lunch, water bottles and other items, pulled the kayaks into the water and got in. We were off.

The Main Kayaking Tour

The crystal clear waters were calm and we could see all the way down to the bottom of the sea.

Clear waters in a cave

Kalliopi is an expert guide and really looked after us on the water. Everything about the tour was planned for our maximum enjoyment and/or safety.

Foggy Weather and Calm Seas

The weather was a bit off when we headed out. It’s often foggy in Santorini in the morning. Something to do with hot and cold air around the volcano, I think. It generally burns off as soon as the sun comes up and heats the air but it didn’t that day.

Front of a yellow kayak in the water with rocks ahead and mist around

It did clear later and we got to enjoy blue skies for a bit. But the fog came back on our return. Luckily, the water was completely still throughout, which was perfect for us.

The Beaches

It didn’t take long to pass White Beach en route. (The sand isn’t white, it’s called that because of the white cliffs behind it.) It was empty, but it can get busy with people coming on the boat taxi from Akrotiri, the only way to access it.

kayaking tour greece

We paddled on, and Kalliopi told us about the volcanic island and the spectacular rock formations and various colours we were seeing.

The pace was relaxed and we had plenty of time to see the caldera from a different perspective. Just being on the water was a wonderful experience. It was crystal clear and we could see the bottom in the shallow areas.

Soon we got to Mesa Pigadia Beach, our next stop and a popular stopping point for the daily boat trips.

Yellow kayaks on small pebble beach with steps up the side of the cliff

We dragged the kayaks up to a small pebbled area at the end, away from the bigger boats.

A speed boat on the water

Snorkeling and Lunch

There were snorkel kits in the kayaks, so we went off to explore while Kalliopi got lunch ready.

This was my favourite part. The water was cold because I swam to a deep section but there were steaks of hot springs coming through from the volcano too. There was enough marine life to make the snorkelling fun. Lots of fish and I spotted a beautiful jellyfish too. I wasn’t brave enough to do any cliff jumping but it was an option!

Clear turquoise water with small black fish near the rocks

After paddling and snorkelling I was starting and expected to be offered a ham and cheese sandwich. Instead, we were presented with an exquisite meal.

We had delicious spanakopita (feta and spinach pie), olives from near where Kalliopi is from in Evia, salad and carrot sticks with scrummy fava. She even gave us a little pot of herbs to sprinkle on the salad.

kayaking tour greece

It was all very lovely and there was no rush. We enjoyed our food and relaxed on the rocks watching the boats go by.

Heading Back Via the Sea Caves

After lunch, we headed back along the same route but via the caves.

Kayaking in Santorini one of the best things to do

Normally the tours go into the sea caves first but one of the couples made us late. Kalliopi changed things up so we weren’t in the cave when a large boat was scheduled to pass. It would have created waves and potential problems for us otherwise.

kayaking tour greece

We learnt how to manoeuvre into the caves backwards to stay safe with an eye on the horizon. And my arms were grateful for the short break before we paddled the last section back to Kambia.

kayaking tour greece

The fog was really thick by the time we got back on our route. I’m glad we were with Kalliopi as we saw a kayaking group from another company heading out.

Santorini's white beach in the mist

They were paddling quite far out from the rocks amongst some of the boats. I’m not quite sure how well they’d have been seen by bigger boats, so it’s good our guide was so conscientious.

White cliffs in Santorini's morning mist

End of the Tour

At the end, we headed back for more refreshments before being dropped back at our pick-up points. Soon after we were sent a link to get copies of all the photos Kalliopi took on her GoPro while we were out on the water.

I had so much fun on this tour; all I can say is book your place it’s totally worth it! It’s a good idea to book as soon as you know when you want to go because the Serenity Tours do sell out in the peak months.

How Fit Do You Need to Be?

You don’t need to be super fit. I’d been worried my arms would tire out and while they were definitely feeling it towards the end, it was totally manageable. You’re not paddling for six hours straight.

Can Beginners Join the Sea Kayaking?

The Santorini sea kayak excursions are open to both beginners and experienced kayakers. We went in a double kayak, so you’re not on your own.

Is Hotel Pick-Up/Drop-off Included?

You’ll need to check the details but often transportation is included depending on where your accommodation is. I was staying somewhere a bit out of the way, so we arranged a meeting point part-way.

What Do I Need to Wear for a Santorini Kayak Tour?

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes that can get wet. I’d recommend:

  • shorts/capri/leggings
  • t-shirt or rash vest
  • swimsuit/bikini underneath
  • water shoes/sporty sandals

On our trip, we were given hats to keep the sun off our heads and neck. If you book with another company, you might need to take your own. Make sure you have something to cover your shoulders since you’ll be under the sun (especially on the morning option).

Similarly, make sure you have suncream or shorts/capri-length trousers to cover your thighs where the kayak doesn’t cover them.

What Do I Need to Bring?

Definitely take a dry change of clothes with you for after.

If you’re not wearing your swimming costume you’ll need to take that with you in the kayak. If you’re changing out of it before kayaking back you might want to take a towel too.

Take your waterproof camera if you have one. You can get waterproof covers for phones in tourist shops too.

What Happens if the Weather’s Bad?

You’re less likely to be affected in summer, but if you go to Santorini in April or the autumn, you might encounter adverse weather conditions. In that case, you’re normally offered an alternative day, or you can choose to get a full refund. Check your trip terms when you book.

Other Helpful Information About Santorini

Santorini might not be the Greek island that first comes to mind for active pursuits, but there are more you can enjoy:

  • see this beautiful island at its best along the caldera hike from Oia to Fira
  • do a sunset hike below Skaros Rock or the Heart of Santorini
  • enjoy more swimming and snorkelling on a boat trip
  • hop seven minutes over to Thirassia and take an e-MBT biking tour
  • join in the watersports at Perissa Beach

If the kayak tour was more than enough exertion then find some other things to do in Oia. Or chill out at one of Santorini’s best beaches , spend the day at a luxe beach club or experience some hospitality and local produce with a wine-tasting experience.

When you finish the tour in the south of the island, you’re close to Akrotiri Archaeological site, Akrotiri Lighthouse (pretty around sunset time but nice views all day) and The Cave of Nikolas traditional taverna.

If you’re looking for golden sand, you can find beautiful beaches a short hop away on Anafi (and a whole load of hiking if your energy comes back!).

Kayaking In Symi – Explore The Real And Authentic Side Of Symi Island

Kayaking in Symi with Trekking Hellas was a fantastic experience! Here are my thoughts after taking this lovely day trip on one of the most picturesque Dodecanese islands in Greece.

Sea kayaking in Symi island Greece

A fabulous sea kayaking tour in Symi

Symi is a small island, located close to the better-known Rhodes in Greece. It’s best known for its incredibly picturesque port town and the imposing Monastery of St Michael Panormitis. It’s also a great place to explore by sea kayak!

Exploring Symi on a sea kayak

Most of Symi’s unique wild beaches can easily be accessed by road, either on foot or by bus / vehicle. Others, like the famous St George Disalonas, can only be reached by sea.

A boat trip is the most popular way to see Symi island and its lovely coastline. However, people who like outdoor activities will love exploring on sea kayaks!

Exploring the wild side of Symi

We had previously taken a kayak trip in Rhodes with Trekking Hellas, an outdoors activity company. At the time, they had invited us to join them on Symi for another tour in early May, weather permitting. We were lucky to join them on a beautiful, calm day!

After an early breakfast, we met our friendly kayaking guides, Dimitris and Giorgos. We met on Pedi beach, a quick bus journey out of Symi town. Our meeting point was a stone’s throw from Pedi Beach hotel.

The guys gave us our equipment for the day: safety jackets, dry bags, paddles, and spray skirts Beluga, which I had never used before.

Kayaking equipment includes spray skirts

The spray skirts attach to the kayak, and were very useful for covering our legs and preventing them from sunburning and splashing. I have to say, they look a bit ridiculous… but this is one of those occasions when practicality beats style!

Paddling around Symi’s secluded bays

The plan was to head to Nanou Bay, on Symi’s east coastline. On the way, we would stop at St George Disalonas Bay, which is the most famous beach on the island.

Exploring Symi on sea kayaks

We started off by paddling along the coastline. In a few minutes, we saw the wonderful St Nicholas beach. You can access it on foot through an easy trail which begins at Pedi Beach.

Paddling on, we eventually came out of the protected Pedi Bay. As soon as we were out in the open sea, there was a bit of a breeze, but nothing serious. It was actually rather pleasant, given the temperature was rising!

Picnic on Nanou Beach

We eventually reached Nanou Bay, a beautiful, wild cove that is only accessible by sea. On the way, we saw Symi’s impressive coastline, with the incredible sharp limestone cliffs.

St George Bay in Symi

We also had a chance for a quick swim, before backtracking to Symi’s most famous beach: St George.

Swimming at St George’s Bay

St George Bay, known in Greek as St George Disalonas Bay, is the most picturesque beach in Symi.

What makes it so unique, is the magnificent rock face just behind the beach. The tall, vertical limestone cliff is really outstanding, and photos don’t really do it justice!

Beach in Symi Greece

The end of a glorious sea kayaking tour!

Our eco-friendly trip was sadly coming to an end! The original plan included reaching Nimos island, a small, uninhabited island to the north of Symi. Due to the increasingly strong winds though, we had to skip it.

Kayaking in Symi island Greece

If you’re planning on visiting Symi island, I would definitely recommend doing this sea kayak trip. It’s a great way to see some of the more secluded beaches, and it’s also eco-friendly and good exercise!

And if you are into wild camping… don’t hesitate to get in touch with Trekking Hellas for more information 🙂

Kayaking trip vs boat tour of Symi

I should note here that kayaking might not be suitable for everyone. You will need to have some previous kayaking experience before taking this trip. There are also age limitations – the activity is not suitable for children under 14.

Symi island kayaking experience

If you’re not into kayaking, or don’t meet the requirements, you could always do a boat tour of Symi instead. There are numerous tours, many of which depart from Rhodes. Here are a couple:

  • Day trip to Symi island with free time in Symi port
  • Day cruise to Symi island with full meal and drinks

My suggestion, though, is to stay on Symi for a few days. You will need to take a ferry from Rhodes , and you’ll be there in an hour!

Have you ever been kayaking in Symi, or elsewhere in Greece? Let me know in the comments below! 🙂

FAQ about kayaking in Symi

Here are a few questions that people visiting Symi often ask:

Is this kayaking activity safe?

Safety always comes first! So, in case of strong winds or otherwise unsuitable conditions, the activity will be altered, postponed or cancelled.

Do you need any previous sea kayaking experience?

For this activity, you will need to have some previous sea kayaking experience. However, the guides at Trekking Hellas will show you everything you need to know in 10-15 minutes. It’s pretty easy to pick everything up!

Is it better to take a boat tour instead of a kayak trip?

Boat tours tend to be busier, and there are more chances of finding crowds when you visit places. A kayak tour is a way more personalized way to explore Symi – plus, you are getting some exercise!

Is there another Greek island where I can do a kayak trip?

You can find kayak tours and many other watersports on most Greek islands. These include Rhodes, Mykonos, Santorini, Kos, Naxos, and many others!

Will I see any traditional villages on the coastline?

No – apart from Pedi, there are no villages on this part of the island. This trip is a lovely way to see Symi’s unique and breathtaking scenery, and appreciate this little rocky paradise even further!
