Subcompact sedans and hatchbacks are some of the smallest you could get today, but they're often overlooked by shoppers who have their hearts seemingly stuck on SUVs. That's too bad because these small cars offer more versatility than you might expect, along with better fuel economy and a smaller footprint that's easier to maneuver.

Kia Rio vs. Hyundai Accent

The Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent are essentially reskinned versions of the same vehicle. That means they have the same engine and are very similarly sized. But there are a few differences. The Accent costs a little more than the Rio and justifies that price increase with improved interior materials and a quieter cabin. Note that Hyundai is discontinuing the Accent after the 2022 model year.

2023 Kia Rio First Impressions

The Kia Rio is a solid choice for a subcompact sedan. It's affordable and easy to drive, and it has a more premium feel than you may expect to find in this budget-friendly class. Now, to get the obvious out of the way: The Rio is small. Very small. But it uses its pint size to its advantage more often than not, offering excellent fuel economy ratings and a small footprint that makes the Rio an appealing city car. Even the cargo space is acceptable, and if you opt for the 5-Door hatchback version, there is more room in the trunk than in many larger midsize sedans. You may also want to check out the Hyundai Accent and Nissan Versa sedans for cross-shopping purposes, although those models do not offer a hatchback version.

This version of the Rio debuted for the 2018 model year and has had only nominal changes since then save for a slight restyling for 2021. 2023 Kia Rio: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2023 Kia Rio is among the last of a dying breed. It’s an affordable subcompact car with a low price tag and an efficient engine. Its few direct rivals include the Nissan Versa and the mechanically similar Hyundai Accent , available only as sedans. The Rio has the distinction of two available body styles — a sedan and a hatchback.

Every Kia Rio gets its power from a 1.6-liter inline-4 engine mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) directing the go to the front wheels. It produces 120 horsepower and 112 lb-ft of torque, and it returns 33 city/41 highway mpg.

As of this writing, Kia has not announced official pricing for the 2023 Rio. However, we know that it’s a carryover model with few — if any — significant changes. The pricing numbers below are estimates based on the pricing of the 2022 model.

The Rio has only two trim levels, simplifying matters. Let’s look at the differences between the LX and S trims of the 2023 Kia Rio.

2023 Kia Rio LX: $16,750

The base LX trim has some impressive features for the money, but it’s also missing a few hard-to-live-without  features .

Basics include power windows, air conditioning, 15-inch steel wheels with hubcaps, intermittent windshield wipers, heated, power mirrors, a tilt steering column, a 3.5-inch LCD cluster display, a trip computer, a backup camera, and cloth seats.

The standard infotainment system is an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, a USB port, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. These are handy smartphone connectivity features that make it easy to bring your music, maps, and more from your phone to the screen in your car. You don’t even need to take your phone out of your purse or pocket.

The LX trim lacks a few notable features: modern driver assistance tech, cruise control, and remote keyless entry.

2023 Kia Rio LX includes:

Air conditioning — This is a must-have feature for staying cool in hot climates.

Up to 41 mpg — The efficient 4-cylinder engine in the Kia Rio returns 33 city/41 highway mpg.

2023 Kia Rio S: $17,390; $17,690 (hatchback)

Upgrading to the S trim is a no-brainer. The price difference is minor compared to the LX model, and you get many more standard features. There’s also an available Technology Package that you can’t get on the LX trim.

For starters, the 5-door hatchback body of the Kia Rio is only available with the S trim. Other than the hatchback design with the bigger cargo hold, the list of features is the same as the S trim of the sedan.

Additional standard features in the S model include a sliding front center armrest with storage, 60/40 split-folding back seats, rear adjustable headrests, a rear USB charger, cruise control, and remote keyless entry.

The available Technology package (approximately $1,800) adds many desirable features while keeping the price reasonable. You get LED headlights, 15-inch alloy wheels, chrome door handles, rear disc brakes, automatic climate control, SiriusXM, push-button start, tire pressure monitoring, and a 4.2-inch driver information display.

The Technology Package also adds many safety tech features. These include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, lane following assist, automatic high beams, driver attention warning, and rear occupant alert.

What's New for 2023?

2023 marks the final year for the Kia Rio. Its only notable revision for its final model year is the addition of an oil-level sensor that will notify the driver should the oil level need replenishing. We think it's likely the Rio will be replaced by a new small sedan Kia calls the K3 .

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2023 Kia Rio starts at $17,905 and goes up to $18,845 depending on the trim and options.

We think the several hundred dollars that separates the base Rio LX from the S model is worth the upcharge. The latter adds a center armrest, cruise control, rear USB outlet, split-folding rear seat with adjustable headrests, and keyless entry. The S also has desirable options such as forward-collision warning with automated emergency braking, SiriusXM satellite radio, LED headlights, and more. Since the hatchback adds more cargo space and slightly better passenger volume, we'd recommend it over the sedan.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Rio is powered by a 1.6-liter inline-four engine with 120 horsepower, and the only transmission choice is a continuously variable automatic. It’s not the quickest car on the block, but a 2021 hatchback model we tested got to 60 mph in an adequate 8.6 seconds—on par with many subcompact crossovers. More impressively, the Rio soaks up bumps well for such a small car thanks to its solid structure and well-tuned suspension. It also does a good job of controlling body roll in corners. The numb steering doesn't communicate as much as we'd prefer, but it is nicely weighted and precise.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA estimates the Rio sedan and hatchback will earn 32 mpg in the city and 41 on the highway. Those figures are identical to the Hyundai Accent's and slightly better than the Nissan Versa's. In our real-world 75-mph highway fuel economy test, a 2021 Rio hatchback achieved 39 mpg, some two miles per gallon lower than the EPA highway rating. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Simplicity is the name of the game inside the Rio, and that's not a slight. In fact, it presents a clean, easy-to-use dashboard with climate and audio controls. There is plenty of hard plastic, but it's nicely textured, and the overall interior appearance is mature and sophisticated for a subcompact. Space in the Kia's front seats is more than adequate, but rear-seat passengers won't be nearly as happy due to restricted legroom. The Rio hatchback provides more space than the sedan's trunk, but neither Kia is a good choice if you plan on hauling lots of cargo. We were disappointed to find that the folded seats don't make for a flat load floor in the hatch. Its center console is competitively sized, as are its door pockets.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Rio comes standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen that offers the latest wireless smartphone-mirroring options for both Apple and Android phones. An upgraded infotainment system is optional on the S trim level that adds Kia’s UVO telematics system and SiriusXM satellite radio.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

While it doesn't have as much driver-assistance technology as some rivals, the Rio is available with forward-collision warning, lane-keep assist, and automated emergency braking. However, base models lack such equipment. The fuel gauge indicates the approximate amount of fuel remaining in the fuel tank.

NOTICE Running out of fuel can expose vehicle occupants to danger. You must stop and obtain additional fuel as soon as possible after the warning light comes on or when the gauge indicator comes close to the “E” (Empty) level.

Low fuel Avoid driving with an extremely low fuel level. Running out of fuel could cause the engine to misfire, damaging the catalytic converter.

NOTICE The fuel display may not be accurate if the vehicle is on an incline.

• Type A Cluster Press the TRIP button for 5 seconds, the temperature unit is blink. And then press the RESET button, the temperature unit is changed. Press the TRIP button for more than one second.
• Type B Cluster The temperature unit can be changed by using the “User Settings” mode of the LCD Display.

Transmission Shift Indicator

This indicator displays which intelligent variable transmission shift lever is selected.

• Manual Mode: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

This indicator informs which gear is desired while driving to save fuel.

• Shifting up: ▲2, ▲3, ▲4, ▲5, ▲6 Shifting down : ▼3, ▼4, ▼5 For example
• ▲3 : Indicates that shifting up to the 3rd gear is desired (currently the shift lever is in the 2nd or 1st gear).
• ▼3: Indicates that shifting down to the 3rd gear is desired (currently the shift lever is in the 4th, 5th, or 6th gear).

When the system is not working properly, the indicator is not displayed.

Trip computer Trip information (Trip computer) The trip computer is a microcomputercontrolled driver information system that displays information related to driving.

NOTICE Some driving information stored in the trip computer (for example Average Vehicle Speed) resets if the battery is disconnected.

To change the trip mode, scroll the MOVE scroll switch ( / ) in the trip computer mode.

• Distance range : 1~9,999 km or mi
• If the estimated distance is below 1 km (1 mi.), the trip computer will display “—” as distance to empty.
• If the vehicle is not on level ground or the battery power has been interrupted, the distance to empty function may not operate correctly.
• The distance to empty may differ from the actual driving distance as it is an estimate of the available driving distance.
• The trip computer may not register additional fuel if less than 6 liters (1.6 gallons) of fuel are added to the vehicle.
• The fuel economy and distance to empty may vary significantly based on driving conditions, driving habits, and condition of the vehicle.

Average Fuel Economy (2)

• Fuel economy range: 0.0 ~ 99.9 km/L, L/100 km or MPG
• The average fuel economy can be reset both manually and automatically.

Manual reset To clear the average fuel economy manually, press the RESET (for Type A cluster), OK (reset) (for Type B cluster) on the steering wheel for more than 1 second when the average fuel economy is displayed.

Automatic reset (for type B cluster) To make the average fuel economy be reset automatically whenever refueling, select the “Fuel Econ. Reset” mode in User Setting menu of the LCD display

• OFF – You may set to default manually by using the trip switch reset button.
• After Vehicle On – The vehicle is automatically set to default, if opening the driver’s door after turning off the engine or 3 minutes passes after restarting the engine.
• After refueling – After refueling more than 6 liters (1.6 gallons) and driving over 1 km/h (1 mph), the vehicle will reset to default automatically.

NOTICE The average fuel economy is not displayed for more accurate calculation if the vehicle does not drive more than 10 seconds or 300 meters (0.19 miles) since the ignition or ENGINE START/STOP button is turned to ON.

Instant Fuel Economy (3)

• Fuel economy range: 0.0 ~ 30.0 L/100 km or 0.0 ~ 50.0 MPG

• Distance range: 0.0~ 9999.9 km or mi.
• To reset the trip meter, press the RESET button on the steering wheel for more than 1 second when the trip meter is displayed.

Elapsed Time (2)

• Time range (hh:mm): 00:00 ~ 99:59
• To reset the elapsed time, press the RESET button on the steering wheel for more than 1 second when the elapsed time is displayed.

NOTICE Even if the vehicle is not in motion, the elapsed time keeps going while the engine is running.

Average Vehicle Speed (3)

• Speed range : 0 ~ 999 km/h or mph
• To reset the average vehicle speed, press the RESET button on the steering wheel for more than 1 second when the average vehicle speed is displayed.
• The average vehicle speed is not displayed if the driving distance is less than 300 meters (0.19 miles) since the ignition or ENGINE START/STOP button is turned to ON. or the driving time is less than 10 seconds since the ignition switch is turned to ON.
• Even if the vehicle is not in motion, the average vehicle speed keeps going while the engine is running.

• The range is the estimated distance the vehicle can be driven with the remaining fuel.

- Distance range : 1 ~ 9,999 km or 1 ~ 99,999 mi.

• The average fuel economy is calculated by the total driving distance and fuel consumption since the last average fuel economy reset.

To clear the average fuel economy manually, press the RESET (for Type A cluster), OK ( for Type B cluster) (reset) on the steering wheel for more than 1 second when the average fuel economy is displayed.

Automatic reset (for type B cluster) To make the average fuel economy be reset automatically whenever refueling, select the “Fuel economy auto reset” mode in the User Setting menu of the LCD window (Refer to “LCD window”).

• OFF - You may set to default manually by using the trip switch reset button.
• After ignition - The vehicle will automatically set to default once 4 hours pass after the Ignition is in OFF.
• After refueling - After refueling more than 6 liters (1.6 gallons) and driving over 1 km/h (1 mph), the vehicle will reset to default automatically.

The average fuel economy is not displayed for more accurate calculation if the vehicle does not drive more than 10 seconds or 50 meters (0.03 miles) since the ignition switch or Engine Start/Stop button is turned to ON.

Instant Fuel Economy (3)

• This mode displays the instant fuel economy during the last few seconds when the vehicle speed is more than 10 km/h (6.2 mph).

- Fuel economy range: 30.0 L/100 km or 0.0 ~ 50.0 MPG
