Experience the beauty and history of Quebec’s King’s Road (Chemin du Roy) on a self-guided bike touring adventure. This multi-day cycling tour follows the heritage route stretching over 280 km/174 miles between Montreal and Quebec City, part of the Route Verte trail network. At the beginning of the 18th century, the French crown decreed the build of King’s Road alongside the St. Lawrence River. It crossed 37 seigneuries granted to nobles, merchants and religious congregations of New France. The subjects who made use of the land along the river were responsible for establishing the section of the road in front of their land. This feudal system of colonization and development resulted in the longest road north of the Rio Grande. Today you can cycle King’s Road and explore its many heritage sites, historical villages, beautiful landscape and the marvellous architecture of the old towns from the New France period. This adventure is also about enjoying the famous “joie de vivre” of the Quebecers, discovering wineries, savouring delicious local products fresh from the farmer’s markets and tasting local beer at one of many excellent microbreweries.

Introductory to moderate. The King's Road is a moderate, mostly flat, and paved 280 km/174 miles road cycling route with some bike paths, paved shoulders, and designated low-traffic road surfaces. Distances each day are short but cyclists should be prepared for some steep hills, especially near Quebec City. Self guided walking or cycling requires individuals to use problem solving skills, be adaptable and have a keen eye. It is recommended that you are comfortable map reading, referring to route notes and that you have a good sense of direction (or are willing to work on improving this!). Cyclists will be expected to know how to fix a flat tire and make basic adjustments to their bicycles using the included repair kit. Sometimes route finding, losing your way, finding it again and asking the locals for help is all part of the adventure. If you’ve never been on a self guided trip, after the first couple of days you will get the hang of if as the vast majority of our first time travellers attest. Please be assured that our written material issued to you for route finding is updated regularly and we provide a 7-day service hotline in the event of any problems.

King’s Road (Kongevegen)

Kongevegen over Filefjell (the King’s Road across Filefjell) was completed in 1793 as the first road where people could drive with horse and cart between east and west in Norway, and between the country’s two largest cities, Christiania (Oslo) and Bergen. It is named after King Sverre (1184–1202 AD) who traveled this route with his army. The King’s Road replaced the old bridle and packhorse track from the middle ages and the post road from the 17th century. Today the road is among the finest road-historical cultural heritage in Europe. Sections like Vindhellavegen reveal the remarkable engineering skills of the past. As a self-guided walking holiday, you will experience the magnificent scenery along the historic King’s Road at your own leisurely pace. Traverse picturesque landscapes, from serene mountains, forests and open plateaus to well-preserved stave churches, thunderous waterfalls, and charming villages. This independent hiking holiday offers the perfect blend of nature, history, and adventure. With comfortable accommodations, luggage transfer and local people’s transfers, it’s an unforgettable exploration of Norway’s past and present. The walking paths are easy to moderate, suited for people without previous hiking experience, and even kids. Dress properly and stay covered for the changeable weather conditions.

Tours on the King's Road

Viking chiefs, medieval kings and the Danish King's officials. They all had one thing in common when they traveled between the East and West of Norway; they had to walk over the Filefjell mountain. Are we as good as our ancestors? Join the King's Road Supreme tour!  It will let you walk the whole King's Road - 5 days - on most of the King's Road sections.

Okay, the Danish bishop Pontoppidan had a lazy journey. He was dragged on a sled across the mountain by local peasants in 1749, not just one, but two times. Everyone else had to use their feet. Even with the help of horses it was a fatiguing journey.

In our time, we can experience this as an adventure. Join in for a memorable five-day hike on the King's Road across Filefjell. Reach the highest point at 1250 m.a.s.l. - a hike trough some of the most amazing nature Norwegian has to offer, and experience rich cultural heritage site and monuments on the way. You walk and cycle from East-Norway to West-Norway, starting in the valley of Valdres, spend the nights in hotels and cabins, and ends up in the valley of Lærdal, in the old town of Lærdalsøyri by the Sognefjord.

In the meantime, we carry the luggage for you. A bit like we did with Pontoppidan 😃

ARRIVAL DAY:

  • Check in: Rogn camping or Sommerhotellet
  • Section: You walk the Kvamskleive
  • Activity: Walking
  • Surface: Grass, authentic King's Road
  • Length: 4,7 km.
  • Use of time: 1-1,5 hours

To ease the length of the hike the next day, you walk the first section « Kvamskleive » already this evening. Kvamskleive was in use from 1808 and replaced an older road on the other side of lake Vangsmjøse. If you stay at Sommerhotellet, you can start the hike at the hotel. Walk on the footpath along the E16 to Søndrol (2.5 km.) where the section Kvamskleive starts.

On your way over Kvamskleive you can take a small detour down to the old Kvam sheriff's farm. Take a break in the yard where history sits in the walls. Just remember not to smoke or use open fire, and mind the domestic animals.

At the end of Kvamskleive you have come down to the old highway E16. Here is a picnic place and toilet. The hosts will pick you up.  NEXT DAY, WALKING DAY no. 1:

  • Sections: Vennisvegen og Øye-Tyinkrysset
  • Activity: Walking and cycling
  • Surface: Some asphalt, gravel, grass. The Øye-Tyinkrysset is authentic King's Road
  • Length: 18 km. (on bike) and 12,3 km. (walking)

After breakfast in Rogn's 200-year-old traditional storehouse, or at Sommerhotellet, the adventure continues. You start the day with a bike. The cycle station is placed by Neset at the eastern end of Kvamskleive where you were yesterday. You can park your car here. If you do not have a car, you may ask the host to help you. You have received the code for the padlock. After you have chosen a bike, remember to make sure that the wire passes all the bicycles on the stand before closing the padlock. Get a helmet in the wooden box. In the box you will also find a pump and a key to adjust the seats etc. Then cross the old highway and follow the road in the eastbound direction 330 meters. Around the bend, take the local road to the left over the bridge (Hemsingbrue). Then you cycle the next section which is Vennisvegen.

It first starts with just under 3 kilometers of steep uphill - it is possible you do best in rolling the bike - but immediately after you get an easy and beautiful bike ride through the villages on the north side of lake Vangsmjøse. Just remember to take off towards Vennis and Øye (yellow signs) at the intersection 1.8 km. after start. The Vennis area is known for its landscape, cultural heritage and shoreline. A leisurely bike ride to Øye takes a couple of hours.

NB: Bicycle is included in the package, but if you don't want to cycle, you can take a public bus to the section after Vennisvegen, the Øye-Tyinkrysset section. The busses are nr. 138 (Monday-Friday, dogs allowed), and NW162 (no dogs).  Even easier you may follow the car transporting your luggage. Ask the hosts at Rogn or Sommerhotellet.

When you arrive at  Øye Stave Church , the cycle ride is over. Place your bike at the bike station next to the brown building on the opposite site of the road. Put the bike in the rack and make sure the wire goes through all the bikes (either through the wheels or the bike frame). Lock it with the padlock. Put the helmet in the wooden box and lock it.

Feel free to visit the small stave church that was found under a floor (!) almost 90 years ago. After the visit you walk 1.5 km. on the local paved road up to Krokasvingadn. Then continue on the section Øye-Tyinkrysset on foot. The start is just next to the ocher yellow house.  Follow the signs. The King's Road goes in hilly terrain and with a few exceptions on grass cover up towards Tyinkrysset. At Tyinkrysset, the King's Road passes through the cabin estate, and at «Grøvstølbrue» (small modern wooden bridge) you go left and up towards Filefjellstuene. Here you will spend the night. Your luggage has been brought here. You can buy a 3-course dinner every day at 19:00 (table reservation no later than the evening before if you haven't booked via this tour) at Filefjellstuene or at Tyinkrysset Fjellstue (dinner is not included in the tour price). Hammer, stayed when he supervised the construction of the King's Road (not included in the price). His four-poster bed still stands there! Here you go to the bike station and choose a bike. You will find the station on the other side of the E16, at HI Borlaug (the station may be difficult to see from the King's Road, but you will find it as soon as you are at Hi Borlaug). You have received the code for the padlock. After you have found a bicycle, remember to make sure that the wire passes all the bicycles on the stand before closing the padlock. Get a helmet in the wooden box. In the box you will also find a pump and a key to adjust the seats etc. Then you cycle to the next section, Borlaug-Borgund stave church , first a little along the E16, then along the old E16.

NOTE: Be extra careful when crossing the E16 to the cycling station and when cycling along the E16 down to the junction towards Borgund! For your own safety, we ask you to roll the bike 500 meters down to the intersection.

From there you cycle past small farms with pasture for sheep and goats. Several campsites are located here, such as Steinklepp camping .

This is the perfect round trip for active best-agers looking for the little extra. History, good food and amazing views in great combination.

SCO_20.06.17-3784.jpg

Day by day program

The King’s Road is a journey through history. The massive stone walls along the route were handbuilt by thousands of workers, forming the main road between Oslo and Bergen in the 18th and 19th century.

The 100 km route consists of four original road sections connected by secondary roads. The authentic sections make up a total of 45 km of road, and are perfect hiking trails with overgrown grass and gravel. If you choose Filefjellstuene as your base and make use of their daily shuttle service, you can enjoy as many of the highlights of the route as you prefer, without having to worry about your luggage along the way.

3 shelter puppies adopted by country singer's road crew after Chicago performance

CHICAGO - Three puppies are on the road to a new life after being adopted by a country singer's road crew following a recent performance at the United Center.

The puppies were initially at an animal shelter in West Texas and placed on the euthanasia list due to lack of space and slow adoptions.

However, One Tail at a Time's sister organization in West Texas stepped in and helped get the trio transported to Chicago.

Once they arrived in the Windy City at One Tail at a Time, the three puppies were invited to Tyler Childers and S.G. Goodman's show at the United Center by Live Nation Concerts on June 13, according to the shelter.

That's when the unexpected happened – the trio found their forever homes.

"We certainly did that, but what we didn't expect was all three puppies being adopted by members of Tyler's road crew!" the shelter said. "We couldn't be happier for these little road dogs!"

Now, the furry friends are tagging along with the band on the "Mule Pull Tour!" Happy tails pups!

"Arise, Sir Cav": Mark Cavendish awarded knighthood in King's birthday honours while Chris Boardman receives CBE

"Arise, Sir Cav": Mark Cavendish awarded knighthood in King's birthday honours while Chris Boardman receives CBE

The King's birthday honours list for 2024 has recognised the achievements of Mark Cavendish, the Manx sprinter awarded a knighthood for his unprecedented achievements as road cycling's greatest ever sprinter. There was also an upgrade from MBE to CBE for Chris Boardman, who was this time recognised specifically for his work as commissioner of Active Travel England.

Cavendish, 39, joins the likes of likes of Bradley Wiggins, Jason Kenny and Chris Hoy as a cycling 'Sir' two weeks before he will line up at the Tour de France in search of his 35th Tour de France stage win, 16 years after he won his first. If he does secure a stage at this year's Tour, Cavendish would pass Eddy Merckx as the most prolific Tour de France stage winner of all time.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by British Cycling (@britishcycling)

Cavendish's career probably needs no introduction for most of you just catching wind of this news, but it's safe to say it has been glittering. Turning professional with Team Sparkasse in 2005 after winning world championship gold on the track in the madison that year, Cavendish's major success on the road began when he joined T-Mobile Team.

In 2008, he won two stages at the Giro d'Italia and four stages at the Tour de France, and stage victories at the Tour followed every year right through until 2013: six stages in 2009, five in 2010, five in 2011, three in 2012 and two in 2013. Cavendish also won the world championship road race and the Tour de France points classification in 2011.

> Mark Cavendish’s top 10 greatest Tour de France stage wins

Cavendish was less prolific by his standards in the mid-2010s with a number of crashes and injuries contributing to quieter years, but 2016 saw a return to form as he bagged four stages at that year's Tour. Leaving early to head to the Olympic games, Cav got his first Olympic medal with a silver in the omnium.

MArk Cavendish after equalling Eddy Merckx's record - picture credit A.S.O./Pauline Ballet

In 2018, Cavendish was forced to take an indefinite break from cycling due to his battle with Epstein-Barr virus, which can cause chronic fatigue. This led to a  "dark" struggle with depression , and a marked drop in his cycling performance.

By 2021, amidst calls for him to retire and the man himself revealing he was ready to quit , Cavendish was offered a one-year contract by former team Deceuninck-QuickStep, and earned a surprise call-up to the Tour de France that year after teammate Sam Bennett was ruled out due to injury. It turned out to be written in the stars, as Cavendish bagged four stage victories and the green jersey to complete one of the greatest sporting comebacks of all time.

Cavendish announced his retirement in 2023, but reversed the decision in October after signing a one-year contract extension with Astana Qazaqstan to target a record-breaking 35th Tour de France stage win.

Cavendish's entry on the honour's list notes that he is also recognised for his charity work. A patron for Help For Heroes for over a decade, the charity notes that Cavendish and his wife Peta have "thrown themselves into many fundraising events and awareness raising activities" over the years. In fact, Cavendish met his wife while she was covering a veteran's event in the USA and he was on a training camp nearby.

Cavendish's first cycling coach, 74-year-old Dot Tilbury, spoke of her pride after hearing the news that her most successful protegee had been knighted:

“When I was coaching Mark as a boy, I had no doubt that he would go on to achieve amazing things. He was very passionate and driven – he would study courses to work out the best way around and research the latest gadgets to help him succeed.

“He comes back to the Island regularly and goes cycling with his children. It always causes lots of excitement whenever they are over.

"Everyone in the Isle of Man, from young children to grannies, is so very proud of what he’s achieved. He has inspired many children to think that you don’t have to come from a big city to go after what you want in life."

A final fact about Cavendish's knighthood: he's only the second man from the Isle of Man to be knighted this century, the other being the late Sir Norman Wisdom back in 2000.

Chris Boardman (Active Travel England)

As well as Cavendish bagging a knighthood, there was also a CBE for Chris Boardman in recognition of his work as a tireless active travel campaigner, which led to his current post as commissioner of Active Travel England.

Already awarded an MBE way back in 1992 for his cycling achievements, 55-year-old Boardman has become more prominent in recent years for his cycling and walking advocacy, inspired to act after feeling unable to make a 500-metre journey by bike with his daughter because the traffic conditions were unsafe.

Boardman has long since campaigned for more segregated cycling infrastructure in the UK, pointing to the Netherlands' extensive cycling network as a prime example, and was instrumental in designing Manchester's Bee Network in his previous role as Greater Manchester's cycling and walking commissioner. He believes this, and normalising utility cycling, is key to making the nation healthier and improving road safety.

Conversely, Boardman has often downplayed the importance of protective equipment when it comes to cycling, telling road.cc in 2014 that helmets are "not even in the top 10 of things you need to do to keep cycling safe or more widely, save the most lives."

In 2016, Boardman's mother Carol was killed by a driver while cycling. He has spoken about the catastrophic effects of dangerous driving and lenient sentencing since her killer was eventually handed 30-week prison sentence and 18-month driving ban in 2018: “I would like to see more driving bans", said Boardman after the sentencing.

“Driving is a privilege, so I don’t want those people who commit crime – and that’s what this is – become a burden on society. I’d just like them not to be able to do that to anybody else ever again.”

> "No family should go through what mine did”: Chris Boardman speaks about losing his mum at the hands of killer driver for the first time

After receiving the news of his CBE, Boardman was quoted in the Wirral Globe as saying: "I’m delighted to receive this honour for services to active travel.

“I started this journey many years ago when my daughter, Agatha, wanted to ride to the park. Even though it was just 500 metres away I felt I had to say no, because I wasn’t sure I could keep her safe. That felt wrong, so I decided to do something about it.

Arriving at road.cc in 2017 via 220 Triathlon Magazine, Jack dipped his toe in most jobs on the site and over at eBikeTips before being named the new editor of road.cc in 2020, much to his surprise. His cycling life began during his students days, when he cobbled together a few hundred quid off the back of a hard winter selling hats (long story) and bought his first road bike - a Trek 1.1 that was quickly relegated to winter steed, before it was sadly pinched a few years later. Creatively replacing it with a Trek 1.2, Jack mostly rides this bike around local cycle paths nowadays, but when he wants to get the racer out and be competitive his preferred events are time trials, sportives, triathlons and pogo sticking - the latter being another long story.

Sorry, but anyone who accepts such an honour immediately drops down slightly in my estimation. For example, Alan Bates fought the establishment that screwed him for decades. Now he's getting a gong, and will kneel in front of a billionaire to be tapped on the shoulders with a sword of state. The same state that jailed his fellow postmasters, because they were little people, and if the great and the good said they had stolen, then they must be guilty. And for what? For the same thing that a Saudi tycoon paid Charles's people cash for - sorry, "donated" to his charity - or that a 30-year-old aide got for bringing Boris Johnson cups of coffee.

That's a disgraceful comment and an appalling slur on our great former prime minister, implying that he would hand out peerages for bringing him cups of coffee. He gave her a peerage because she's one of his secret love children, or possibly because he'd been playing Emperor and the slave girl behind Carrie's back with her, although hopefully not both.

Dropping down slightly in your estimation will no doubt detract enormously from his satisfaction. Also, you forgot to mention "the blob" and "metropolitan elites".

I am so thrilled for Cav, a huge honour for the greatest sprinter and a thoroughly nice guy. Congrats also to Chris Boardman and his essential work for Active Travel, a well deserved CBE.

Also spotted, a BEM for Ernest Feargrieve, lead race mechanic for GB Cycling Team.

Thoroughly nice guy?
