THE MAIN LODGE

Mavela Game Lodge is an open-plan, two-story thatched welcome area with lounging spots, an upstairs “ help yourself” bar and spacious dining facilities. These all lead out to a generous pool and large wooden veranda looking onto a small watering hole and vast views of the African bushveld.

Our guests can unwind and make themselves at home in one of our seven, luxury safari-style tents. Each luxury tent is tastefully decorated complete with aircon, standing fans and luxurious, eco-friendly Afri-Earth amenities and crisp white linen on either single or king beds. There is an en-suite bathroom and shower plus an intimate outdoor shower that faces the views of the bushveld. Unwind on a large private deck looking out at the beautiful views with comfortable deck chairs and a birdbath in front of each tent, which birding enthusiasts can enjoy ticking off their lifers from the comfort of their veranda. The entire camp is fenced where guests will be escorted back to their rooms after dinner. At Mavela Game Lodge you’ll feel the intimate safari lodge experience in a unique part of the African bush.

Guest Experiences

We had the most amazing time here at Mavela Game Lodge for a 2 night stay (we wish it could have been for longer). The staff, lodge, food, room and Safari were all incredible. The staff were all so lovely and looked after our every need. They always went above and beyond to ensure our stay was a memorable one. Our guide Jason was super knowledgeable and answered all the questions we had our on our game drives. The main lodge is stunning. From the help yourself bar to the immense views over the reserve, we didn’t want to leave this place. Sitting having a lunchtime beer overlooking the watering hole was a real highlight for us. When the sun came out we sat by the swimming pool which is a lovely option to have as well. The food was delicious. Having a nut allergy and dairy intolerance between us, the chefs always prepared us separate food to ensure we could eat with confidence and this food was exceptional. The best food we ate in South Africa. Our room was very spacious and well decorated. We loved the option of having an outdoor shower in the day overlooking the reserve, as well as having a lovely seating option on our balcony area. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the room in general has everything you need and more for a super comfortable stay. Lastly the Safari was our highlight. The amount of animals we saw on our four drives was incredible. We loved going to different areas within the reserve and seeing the wide range of animals and birds that live there. We are glad we only managed to see 4 of the big 5 as we definitely have to come back to find our 5th! We couldn’t recommend Mavela more highly, we had the most incredible stay and can’t thank the staff enough for making our time there so special.

Firstly I would like to state that we have stayed in far more expensive lodges and that our experience at Mavela showed us that you don't need to spend a pile of money to get a sensational African experience. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful at all times. The food was fantastic and the variety was great. Views from both the tents and the guest areas are phenomenal and exactly what you need to take in the surroundings and feel part of the game reserve. The tents themselves are large and comfortable and all of the amenities could not be faulted in the slightest. The range of wild animals in the park is right up there with much bigger and pricier game reserves which is a great bonus. Our guide (Jason) was nothing short of fantastic, his knowledge of the animals, their behavior and the area made the drives all that much better. He was always friendly and professional and while I can only speak for our guide, if the others are only half as good this is the place to go!

Could not want for anything. The staff were attentive and everything that you could want was available. food was plentiful and delicious. We had Sitelo on the game drives and he was the most knowledgeable i have ever experienced - and he was amazing with our 5 year old while still being a fantastic guide to all of us. On the drives we got an up close experience with Elephants and Lions…while seeing buffalo, cheetah, jackal and a ton of other animals up close as well.

We had a more than wonderful week stay at the Mavela Game Lodge. The lodge is beautiful settled in Manyoni Private Game Reserve. The main lodge and the seven luxury tents are beautiful designed, tastefully decorated in a modern African style and equipped with every luxury you can wish for. We were threated by all the staff with great hospitality and kindness and enjoyed every meal in the great setting and atmosphere from the main lodge. The game drives with Roland were fantastic, through his experience and super knowledge as ranger we experienced wonderful meetings and sightings with the animals, who are very relaxed and close. That gave us many opportunities to make great pictures such as from the very rare secretary bird, the cheetah’s looking for a hunt, lions, the elephant herd and the very endangered pangolin. Fantastic. Mavela Game Lodge is in every sight a five-star lodge, we had an unforgettable time here.

Thula Thula, which literally means peace and tranquillity in Zulu, is the oldest private wildlife reserve in KwaZulu-Natal. THANDA SAFARI LODGE

Thanda Safari Lodge has nine self-contained suites, each with a lavish living space, heated plunge pool and outside ‘sala’ or resting area overlooking the reserve. The circular design of the suites pays homage to the region’s Zulu culture where traditional homesteads are circular in design. The suites are far enough from one other for privacy but without feeling isolated. Thanda Safari Lodge’s central dining and gathering area includes an inviting lounge, expansive deck and library overlooking a waterhole, private business area, cigar bar and impressive wine cellar. Thanda Safari Lodge has a spa where a range of treatments are offered in the tranquil therapy rooms or outside in the sala space with beautiful views of the reserve. Zulu Culture

Zulu means ‘Heaven’ and the Zulu people are ‘The People of Heaven’. At Thanda Safari most of our team members are Zulu, and we offer a special Zulu cultural and community experience where you can visit families in our neighbouring villages in their traditional homesteads and take part in community projects and celebrations.

On a Thanda Safari, you can experience and participate in every aspect of wildlife conservation, including spending time with our specialist rhino monitors and conservation team or exploring beyond the reserve on a guided boat tour to experience hippos and crocodiles in the nearby iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site.

Magnificent wildlife photography tells the story of your Thanda Safari in a way that words cannot. Thanda’s accomplished resident wildlife photographer and field guide, Christian Sperka is an expert at sharing the art of capturing wildlife on camera in a 90-minute session, at no charge to guests staying for two nights or more.

THANDA SAFARI GAME RESERVE

• Getting to Thanda Safari
• KwaZulu Natal

DRIVE:   Thanda Safari is situated in northern KwaZulu-Natal, some 260km north of Durban. From Durban, take the N2 towards Hluhluwe. Approximately 20km (12 miles) past the turn-off for Hluhluwe, turn left onto the D242, and continue for approximately 5km (3 miles) on the gravel road to the   Thanda Safari   gate on the right.

FLY:   If you are flying into local Richards Bay Airport or King Shaka International Airport in Durban, a transfer can be arranged, where our team will meet you and drive you to the reserve. International guests often fly to South Africa via O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

This luxury lodge is the ideal place to discover one of the very few untouched wilderness beaches in Africa. Set in the Isimangaliso Wetland Park region, the landscape consists of coastal forests, grasslands, bush, shimmering lakes and exquisite sandy beaches. The sunkissed beaches with their warm turquoise waters, offer some of the best snorkeling and off-shore scuba diving.

The spacious thatched suites are hidden in the coastal dune forest and raised on wooden stilts to ensure no harm comes to the sensitive dune soils. Inspired by Thonga architecture, the rooms have been carefully positioned to guarantee guest privacy. All rooms have open-plan bathrooms with double vanity and separate shower and toilet. Deluxe Ocean View and Family Suites have a free-standing bath.

The seven Forest View Rooms feature a large open plan bedroom with king or twin beds, en-suite bathroom with double vanity, separate shower and toilet, air-conditioning, overhead fans, mini bars, tea & coffee making facilities, safe & hair dryers, and a small deck.

The two Forest View Family Suites are ideal for families traveling with children. These suites feature two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. The spacious main bedroom has either king or twin beds, an open-plan bathroom with bath, double vanity, separate toilet and shower; and a small balcony offerings views of the bush. The smaller second bedroom has two ¾ beds, en-suite bathroom with separate toilet, shower and basin; and is connected to the main bedroom by a short inter-leading passage which has doors at both ends to ensure privacy but also offers peace of mind to parents.

The three Ocean View Rooms feature a spacious open plan bedroom with king or twin beds, a bathroom with double vanity, separate shower and toilet; and a small deck offering various spectacular views of the ocean.

The Deluxe Ocean View Suite features a spacious open plan bedroom with a kingsize bed, bathroom with bath, double vanity, separate shower and toilet; and an elevated deck that offers spectacular ocean views and a private plunge pool.

The Deluxe Ocean View Family Suite is positioned a fair distance from the other rooms, offering complete privacy. The suite features two bedrooms each with an en-suite bathroom, an expansive deck area, and a private plunge pool. The large open plan main bedroom has a king size bed, full bathroom with bath, shower and double vanity. The second bedroom is smaller with two ¾ beds and en-suite shower and toilet.

Activities available at the lodge consists of snorkeling, scuba diving, sundowners and kayaking at Lake Sibaya, bird watching, guided walks, turtle tracking (seasonal), fishing and visiting a Tsonga homestead to learn about their unique heritage and culture.

Very good experience with getting quotes

I didn’t end up booking with safari.com but I did have a great experience with their consultant, Leigh-Ann Croeser. I originally wanted to book a safari at a specific lodge but it was not available for the dates we wanted. She offered suggestions and helped us secure holds on other dates. She worked hard and sent several follow up emails as she was able to hold some dates for available rooms at the original lodge! We did end up booking with another safari tour company as I sent out a few quotes at the same time and that worked out better for us but next time I would definitely consider booking with her again!

Rhino river lodge.

The lodge grounds sprawl through an area of thick riverine vegetation, rich with bird and animal life, and filled with magnificent fig and fever trees. The grounds also include a reception with curio shop, dining room with bar, WIFI, lounge, and swimming pool.

Choose from three types of accommodation that suit families, small groups and couples staying at our safari lodge in KZN – double en-suite Deluxe Rooms, Family Loft Chalets, and two Private Safaris Houses, the Cottage (sleeps six) and Homestead (sleeps 4).

Accommodation

The lodge can accommodate 24 people at any time. All the accommodation types feature air-conditioning and ceiling fans, private verandahs, mosquito nets, coffee and tea making facilities and a fully stocked mini-bar.

Deluxe Rooms

The most traditional style of accommodation is our four en-suite Deluxe Rooms. The rooms are decorated in a modern rustic style with newly renovated bathrooms. Each room has either one king-sized bed or two single beds covered by a large mosquito net, with an indoor sitting area and private veranda. Units 4 & 5 inter-lead so are perfect for multi-generational families travelling together.

Family Loft Chalets

Min 2 Adults | Max 4 people

For small families wanting to share accommodation or groups of friends keen on a little extra space, our two Family Chalets can accommodate four people each. Each log-cabin-style chalet has two double bedrooms (one is a second story loft-style room, the other on the ground floor), a shared bathroom with bathtub & shower, and an open-plan living area. This chalet is closest to the main lounge, dining and pool areas of the lodge.

The Cottage

Min 3 adults | Max 6 people | 4 adults and 2 children/teenagers

This private safari home is reminiscent of a British cottage with a nod towards African-inspired decor. Comfortable and spacious, The Cottage can accommodate six guests in two en-suite bedrooms and a loft room with a downstairs bathroom, complete with air conditioners and stunning views.

It features a cosy lounge, dining room and kitchen. The covered veranda and private swimming pool overlooking the Msunduze Riverbed are the star features of The Cottage. The perfect spot to enjoy family or friends while taking in the sights and sounds of the Zululand bush.

The Homestead

The option for ultimate privacy and luxury is our exclusive Homestead. This stylish two-bedroom safari home can accommodate up to four guests. Each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom with a bathtub and outdoor shower.

Phinda Private Game Reserve showcases one of South Africa’s finest gaming experiences, including Africa’s Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino), the endangered black rhino and over 400 bird species in an impressive 23 000 hectares (56 800 acres) of prime wilderness land in KwaZulu-Natal.

Phinda is described as the “Seven Worlds of Wonder”, with its seven distinct habitats – a magnificent tapestry of woodland, grassland, wetland and forest, interspersed with mountain ranges, river courses, marshes and pans waiting to be discovered as well as being home to 1 000 hectares of Africa’s remaining rare dry sand forest. Situated within close proximity of the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, Phinda is also located within easy reach of the iSimangaliso/Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, a lush conservation area that has earned World Heritage Site status. With unspoiled beaches and spectacular reefs nearby, and an abundance of wildlife, Phinda offers guests the perfect bush and beach adventure.

Phinda is made up of six equally unique lodges that have been designed to complement the different habitats perfectly. Forest Lodge enjoys the dappled shade deep in the heart of a rare, dry sand forest, while Mountain Lodge boasts remarkable views out over the Reserve. Vlei Lodge, on the edge of the forest, overlooks the vast wetland, and Rock Lodge sits suspended over a deep valley below.

Phinda is also home to two sole-use safari villas, Zuka Lodge and The Homestead. Luxurious and intimate, these villas are the perfect ‘home away from home’ for families or small groups of friends sharing a safari together.

Phinda Forest Lodge: Set deep in the heart of a rare and beautiful dry sand forest, Phinda’s Forest Lodge is a mass of exquisite contradiction. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls invite the forest inside, while the dense tree canopy shelters and provides privacy. Floating on stilts above the forest floor while tiny duiker graze below, 16 Zulu Zen suites blend into the dappled shade.

Phinda Mountain Lodge: Wraparound views of the ancient Ubombo Mountain range, this one of Phinda’s lodge’s balances majestically above its beautiful surroundings. The 25 suites scattered along the mountainside offer complete privacy and luxury.

Phinda Rock Lodge: Carved into the rocky mountainside facing spectacular Leopard Rock, Phinda’s Rock Lodge offers complete seclusion, suspended in air over the deep valley below. Six stone and adobe suites burrow into the heart of the cliffside, with solid wooden shutters and doors opening up onto a private viewing deck and plunge pool balanced on the very edge of a breathtaking precipice.

Phinda Vlei Lodge: At the edge of the Reserve’s unique wetland or vlei system at the edge of the sand forest, Phinda’s Vlei Lodge offers an intimate safari experience, with elegant and gracious spaces designed for quiet contemplation of the African wilderness. The six elegant thatched suites look out onto an ever-changing parade of animals on the open vlei.

Phinda Zuka Lodge: Cradled in a valley and surrounded by densely wooded hills studded with aloes, sole-use Zuka Lodge embodies cool, coastal bush style. Four thatched en-suite cottages cluster around a central guest area with an open, interactive kitchen, a large wooden dining table for friends and family, and a cosy fireplace for evening gatherings.

The Homestead: In this exclusive private safari villa, the beauty of Africa’s wide open spaces is brought right indoors. Large sliding doors in four luxurious suites let in breathtaking vistas. Personal touches and the warmth of a dedicated team of staff, including a private ranger, tracker, butler and chef, bring renowned African hospitality to life.

Phinda is home to an abundance of wildlife, from the largest mammals to the smallest antelope. However, it is the faster of predators that has a special place here. Having reintroduced cheetah to the area after an absence of over 50 years, Phinda has quickly established a reputation as one of the best places to view and photograph these rare cats. Along with cheetah, lion and leopard are tracked on the reserve on a daily basis and guests have a high likelihood of encountering these magnificent animals.

Another success story at Phinda is that of both the white and the more endangered black rhino. Brought back from the brink of extinction, both the grass-eating white rhino and the shrub-grazing black rhino are thriving at Phinda.

The elegant nyala antelope is a frequent sight, with the Reserve boasting one of the highest densities of the species. With its dark brown coat, yellow legs, shaggy mane and bushy tail, the male nyala is particularly spectacular, while the female contents itself with a less flashy chestnut coat. The rare sand forest in the northern parts of Phinda is the perfect environment for some of the rarer smaller species. The shy red duiker is found grazing on fallen leaves and fruit and the tiny suni, one of the smallest antelope species, may also be seen.

The Phinda Private Game Reserve is one of the best examples of its kind in Africa – a place where dreams come true.
