How To Buy The Best Malaysia Tourist Sim Card 2021

How To Buy The Best Malaysia Tourist Sim Card 2024

Thankfully, getting a travel sim card Malaysia is very easy. You just need ID and some ringgit (and sometimes not even the latter if you purchase from home!). I describe the best (and easiest ways) to get a traveller sim Malaysia below.

But first, a bit of background information.

Best Travel Sim Malaysia

Mobile and data overage is generally very good in Malaysia on any prepaid sim card Malaysia plan. We never had a problem.

I always like having a Malaysia data sim card for tourist so I know I always have maps, Google and internet access for work and email. In fact, my sim card data access is often better than hotel wifi! It’s also important to have one of the Malaysian sim cards if you’re travelling Malaysia solo so that you have a way to contact people.

Also, these days I find many of my travel bookings are on my phone, like bus tickets and entry tickets, and I need to be able to access them without problems.

You will always need ID when picking up or purchasing a Malaysia travel sim card as it’s legally required. Your passport is perfect for this.

I highly recommend you get a prepaid plan. These require minimal effort and are very good value. As a tourist, they are also basically your only choice.

You can, of course, use your sim card from home if you have a phone carrier that allows this or from a neighbouring country. However, this is likely to be much much much more expensive than buying a Malaysia prepaid sim card for tourist. It’s such an easy process to buy a prepaid sim that this is what I recommend rather than using international roaming.

You can buy a prepaid sim card in Malaysia as soon as you arrive in most international airports to make it extra easy or use a service on Klook to pick up your sim card on arrival which makes it even easier.

Otherwise, many shopping malls and bus stations have a chance to purchase the best tourist sim card Malaysia as well. I promise that you won’t find it hard to find somewhere to buy one!

If you are very particular about what service you get and exactly what it covers, then I recommend purchasing from the company direct (often they will have kiosks at arrival airports) so you can ask any questions. Otherwise, you can buy them from whoever.

If you need more data or talk credit for your sim card prepaid, it’s also very easy to purchase top ups from many places or online. Usually, you can do this at any 7-Eleven or one of hundreds of other places. You can ask when picking up your sim card about where to add credit to your Malaysia prepaid card.

As an alternative, you can also get an eSim before you leave home that will give you peace of mind that you will have data for your whole trip (including surrounding countries) and you’re all set to go.

Airalo is especially handy for this.

When choosing the best sim card in Malaysia for you, take a minute to think about your needs – do you plan on making local calls and sending local texts, or do you really just want to use the internet/data?

Most people you need to deal with in Malaysia (like tour operators and taxi drivers) will have whatsapp which makes a Malaysian sim card with some call credit included unnecessary, but it can still come in handy. You can get around this by using a service like Skype so you can ring local numbers even if your phone plan just has data.

Option 1: Purchase The Best Sim Card For Tourist In Malaysia Before Leaving Home!

Your first choice for buying a Malaysia sim card tourist pack is to purchase your sim card online before leaving home. This has the benefit of making it very easy to pick-up your prepaid sim on arrival so you are all set to go.

Even better, if your phone allows you to have an eSim, like most iPhones and many others, you can buy and activate your sim card without even needing to talk to anyone.

This is the cheapest and easiest option for getting a travel internet sim card.

This is especially beneficial if you want to make sure you have a sim card to go as soon as you arrive and want things as easy as possible. It works best for people who want data more than a sim card to make calls.

There are plenty of Malaysia sim card airport options, with many of the major airports in Malaysia offering card pick-up. It’s easiest in Kuala Lumpur at terminal 2, but there are other options too.

I personally recommend buying an eSim as the best option if your phone handles eSim for ultra ease.

You can do this via the following links. These sim cards are for Malaysia only.

  • Kuala Lumpur airport Tune Talk (KLIA2 only)
  • Kuala Lumpur airport Celecom (KLIA2 only)
  • Kuala Lumpur airport Digi (KLIA2 only)
  • eSim (up to 5GB)
  • eSim (unlimited data)
  • Airalo eSim, perfect for multiple countries and super easy set up.

If you click on the links above, you will get the latest deals as well as photos and instructions so you can be completely clear on where to pick it up in the case of the first two physical sim cards. For the eSims, you’ll get an email with an activation code so you can get started.

It is very easy to buy sim card online Malaysia using this method.

All of these choices of sim card in Malaysia for tourist are great value with good coverage.

There are usually two options for each provider and you can pick the best one for you depending on how long you are in Malaysia and how much data you need.

At the time of writing this guide, the price starts at RM23, so as you can see the Malaysia sim card price is very reasonable.

You can buy one right now for a great price on Klook by clicking here.

Comparison Of Malaysia Tourist Sim Card Options

The following table gives you all the options for pre-purcashing a Malaysia sim card for tourist. Simply click on the option that best suits you, buy and follow the instructions to pick it up. It’s really easy to buy Malaysia sim card online and saves the hassle of trying to work things out on arrival after a long flight!

All providers have similar coverage and are good choices. Note that the Digi and Celecom options are currently only available in KLIA2, so only buy this option if you are flying into there (usually just AirAsia and other budget options). Tune Talk is available at both Kuala Lumpur International Airport terminals though as well as Penang and Kota Kinabalu.

These options are only for people who hold a foreign (so not Malaysian) passport. The sim card price Malaysia will depend on how much data and minutes you have included as well as how long the Sim card is valid for. For the plans mentioned below, click on the provider links and you’ll find additional options if you need a sim card for longer.

* 5GB at high speeds, 10GB at 64 kbps  ** 10GB at high speeds, 10GB at 64 kbps  *** Up to 20GB at 3Mbps then 512 kbps  **** Up to 60GB at 6Mbps then 512 kbps ***** 15GB at high speeds, unlimited at 128 kbps ****** 500MB a day at high speeds then unlimited at 384 kbps ******* This is the starting price. There are many options

Note: The above table is correct at time of publishing and should give you an indication of the best prepaid plan Malaysia prices. However, things do change so double check the price and allowances before purchase. Also check that the collection point is open at your arrival time.

Option 2: Buy A Digi Travel Sim Card Malaysia On Arrival

Another way to buy a Digi sim card Malaysia is in person once you arrive in Malaysia. It’s also very easy to buy a sim card when you get there – it just takes longer and usually costs more.

Digi is the third largest sim provider in Malaysia and our personal favourite. We are big fans of a Digi traveller sim card.

They offer great plans and prices for their Malaysia travel sim options, they are easy to buy and top up and have great coverage and data speed. Their Malaysia sim card rates are some of the best around.

All sim sizes are available.

Note that they do offer multiple plans which can be confusing especially as you need to make sure you buy the right one when you first sign up or you can end up wasting money by swapping plans.

And it is cheaper to pre-buy your sim card here for Kuala Lumpur .

So think about how long you want the sim card to work for, how much data you want and whether calls are important too. The good part is that top ups are very cheap so it will all work out if you make a mistake.

Picking up a Digi sim card for tourist is very easy on arrival in the country with kiosks in many major airports. We usually fly into KLIA2 and you can find Digi as soon as you exit customs. Just walk straight ahead on the left side of the exit. Look for a big yellow sign!

digi malaysia tourist at KLIA2

At KLIA, you can find some sim providers just before you hit the baggage claim. See photo below.

Sim card providers as you walk to baggage claim at KLIA

At KLIA, you can find Digi, Tune Talk and some other providers just to the left as you exit customs. The following video shows you where. Note that this was taken before the pandemic. If you have been to KLIA recently, it would be great to find out if it’s still in the same spot.

If you’re looking for the best prepaid plan Malaysia offers for tourist sims, the current Digi prepaid sim plans are…

Option 3: Buy A Regional Sim Card Before You Leave

Travelling to other countries in the region during your trip?

A sim card that works in these countries too can be the best way to go. They cost a little more but will make life easier.

There are two options you can easily buy online before you go. One is an eSim (so make sure your phone works with this before purchase). This is ultra easy as you can set it up without having to visit a physical collection point. It works in basically all of SE asia.

There is also an eSim which is just for Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. The table below shows the price for 7 days, but they also have prices for 5 and 10 days here .

Finally, there is an eSim you can buy from Airalo that basically works everywhere. I bought one for my recent trip and was able to use it in Malaysia, Thailand, Armenia, Georgia, Israel, Dubai and Cyprus! Everywhere I went on the trip.

There is also a physical sim which works in 11 countries which includes most of SE Asia, Macau, Hong Kong and Australia. You can collect this from KLIA2.

Here are your options. They are both data only.

* Up to 15GB at high speeds then 128 kbps  ** Up to 20GB at high speeds then 128 kbps *** Up to 20GB at high speeds then 384 kbps

Option 4: Have A Sim Card Delivered Before You Leave

If you like the idea of already having your sim card set to go before you leave home but want a physical sim, there are options to buy one and have it delivered to your home before you go.

You can find options for the following countries below:

Hi, I will be traveling I. Malaysia for 6 weeks (42 days), which SIM card would you recommend I buy?

Also, should I purchase the SIM card online or at he airport?

I will be flying in the KLIA main terminal.

Kind regards.

Hi Jacob! Any of the options in this article will work for you. You can easily extend the duration and buy more credit once you are there. When you are picking up the card (if you buy online) or buying the card, you can ask them how you can do that but usually it’s as simple as going in a 7/11. You can buy before or on arrival. Before makes it slightly easier and quicker when you are there.

Hi Josh, your article is helping me a lot! Can I buy Digi LIVE sim card at the airport? I really don’t need that much data anyway. And just in any case I need to top up, how much is the minimum amount? Many thanks in advance!

Hi Martina! The people at Digi can help you set up your sim card with whatever plan you like. I’m not sure about minimum top up amount. It would be low though like RM5.

Best Tourist Sim Cards in Malaysia in 2024

malaysia tourist data plan

If you’re planning a trip to Malaysia, having a reliable sim card is essential for seamless travel experiences. With internet access, exploring new cities becomes a breeze as you can easily discover the best restaurants, locate your accommodation, arrange transportation, and share memorable moments with your loved ones.

While international roaming is an option, the costs can quickly accumulate. That’s why we recommend either obtaining an eSIM or a local sim card to enjoy the advantages of local phone rates. Thankfully, securing either option in Malaysia is incredibly convenient, but it’s helpful to know which one suits you best.

This comprehensive guide is designed to provide you with all the necessary information, including updated pricing, ensuring that you make an informed decision when purchasing a sim card in Malaysia.

Table of Contents

Best sim card in malaysia for tourists.

Sim cards in Malaysia are generally pretty cheap and you can’t really go wrong with any of the main providers. My top picks are Digi, Celcom and Maxis who all offer strong coverage, fast networks and good reliability.

15GB of data is more than enough data for most travellers which is why I recommend the Digi prepaid sim card with 15GB of 5G enabled data for just RM20 ( about $4.5 USD).

eSims in Malaysia are quite a bit more expensive than local sim cards so if you’re looking for the best value then you should go with the Digi prepaid sim card above. If you’re short on time and you are happy to pay a little extra then you can buy the Airalo eSim here which is far more convenient than picking up a sim card in person.

Malaysia Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Malaysia costs RM20 in May 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Malaysia will cost between $4.50 USD and $40 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Malaysia which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $15 USD.

How to Get a Sim Card in Malaysia

Identify mobile providers: Digi, Maxis and Celcom are your best options in Malaysia.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Malaysia

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Malaysia at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Malaysia then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Malaysia have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Digi, Maxis and Celcom. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Malaysia are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Malaysia with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

Malaysia eSim

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Malaysia. The Airalo Malaysia eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $15 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Malaysia without having to venture outside.

Airalo Malaysia

Our preferred eSim provider in Malaysia is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Malaysia and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Malaysia eSim uses the Maxis & Digi networks to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Maxis & Digi networksnetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Malaysia.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Malaysia eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $4.50 USD 2GB data valid for 15 days – Price: $8 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $10.50 USD 5GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $15 USD 10GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $25 USD 20GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $40 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 5GB data plan for $15 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Malaysia

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Malaysia eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Malaysia eSim uses the Maxisnetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Malaysia

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s Malaysia eSim:

Unlimited data valid for 5 days – Price: $19 USD Unlimited data valid for 7 days – Price: $27 USD Unlimited data valid for 10 days – Price: $34 USD Unlimited data valid for 15 days – Price: $47 USD Unlimited data valid for 20 days – Price: $54 USD Unlimited data valid for 30 days – Price: $64 USD Unlimited data valid for 60 days – Price: $84 USD Unlimited data valid for 90 days – Price: $99 USD

What is an eSim?

An eSIM, also known as an embedded SIM, refers to a digital SIM card that is built into devices like smartphones, tablets, or smartwatches. Unlike traditional physical SIM cards, an eSIM does not require any physical insertion or removal from the device.

Instead, the eSIM is seamlessly integrated into the device’s hardware and can be remotely activated and programmed by a mobile network operator. This allows users to effortlessly switch between various mobile networks or plans without the need to physically swap SIM cards.

The introduction of eSIM technology brings in convenience, flexibility, and ease of use, particularly for frequent travelers or individuals who often switch between different mobile networks or travel internationally. It eliminates the requirement to purchase and physically insert physical SIM cards, making it much more convenient to manage multiple mobile connections on a single device.

To activate an eSIM, users simply need to scan a QR code provided by their mobile network operator or manually input the activation details. Once activated, the device can seamlessly connect to the chosen mobile network and avail all usual voice, data, and messaging services, just like a traditional SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

Using an eSIM can be beneficial for various reasons. First, it offers convenience as you don’t have to physically insert or remove a SIM card when switching networks or plans. This is particularly useful for frequent travelers who need to use local SIM cards in different countries. Second, eSIM allows for dual SIM functionality, meaning you can have two active mobile numbers on the same device. This is helpful for separating personal and work numbers or managing multiple phone lines. Third, eSIMs save space as they are embedded within the device, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card slot. This allows manufacturers to make smaller devices or use the extra space for other components. Fourth, eSIMs enable remote provisioning, allowing for activation and management of mobile plans over the air. This eliminates the need for a physical SIM card or visiting a store when activating or switching plans, providing greater flexibility and convenience. Lastly, using an eSIM-compatible device ensures future-proofing as more mobile networks and service providers offer support for eSIMs. This allows you to take advantage of new services and offerings as they become available. Overall, eSIM technology offers flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity, making it a compelling choice for many users.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

Navigating Malaysia SIM Card Options for Tourists

Setting foot in a new country can be exhilarating but requires reliable communication options.

Thankfully, Malaysia offers many SIM card options for tourists, ensuring you stay connected during your travels.

Whether you’re an ardent Instagrammer needing high-speed data or someone who prefers voice calls, there’s a SIM card tailored to your needs.

One of the most popular options among tourists is a prepaid SIM card. Providers such as Tune Talk and Digi Malaysia offer enticing prepaid packages, including prepaid local sim cards. These can be conveniently pre-ordered through platforms like Klook, often at discounted rates.

But what if you prefer the convenience of constant connectivity without the hassle of changing SIM cards? Enter the world of eSIMs – a virtual alternative to traditional SIM cards.

Prepaid SIM Cards: What You Need to Know

In Malaysia, prepaid SIM cards are popular among tourists, offering many benefits.

From extensive coverage to affordable options, key players such as Maxis, Digi, U Mobile, Celcom, and Tune Talk ensure you stay connected, explore the vibrant cityscape, or wander through serene rainforests.

Navigating through the array of prepaid SIM cards can be daunting. Here’s a quick rundown. Celcom offers eight feature-rich plans, U Mobile offers six, and there are attractive tourist-specific plans like the Tune Talk 4G SIM Card.

Prices can vary based on the data plan chosen, but rest assured, you can find an option that caters to your specific needs.

E SIM Cards: The Virtual Alternative

If you’re a fan of digital convenience, an e-sim card is your best bet. An eSIM is a digital SIM card that comes pre-installed in your phone.

It allows you to retain your existing number and eliminates the need for physical SIM cards, making the transition to a local network in Malaysia a breeze.

Now, you might be wondering about the compatibility of your device with eSIMs. While most modern smartphones are eSIM compatible, confirm this before travelling.

Providers like Celcom and Airalo operate on Digi’s 4G/LTE network, ensuring compatibility. Once you’ve purchased your eSIM online, you’ll receive a QR code via email. Follow the instructions to activate it on your device; you’re connected!

Essential Considerations for Tourist SIM Cards in Malaysia

With many options available, choosing the correct SIM card can seem overwhelming. The key factors to consider when selecting a mobile operator in Malaysia are:

  • Signal strength

With its impressive 94.5% LTE population coverage, Celcom is a popular choice among consumers looking for reliable signal strength nationwide.

However, other operators, such as Digi, offer suitable tourist plans, providing prepaid and postpaid options for added flexibility.

Network Coverage and Internet Speed

Regarding network coverage and internet speed, not all operators are created equal. Here is an overview of the coverage provided by different operators in Malaysia:

  • Celcom’s 3G network covers over 80% of the population, while its 4G/LTE network reaches over 90%.
  • U Mobile offers extensive coverage across Malaysia.
  • Unifi and U Mobile may have limited 4G/5G coverage in areas like Borneo.

In urban centres and major cities, you can expect reliable 4G services, often surpassing the quality of hotel WiFi. However, coverage can be patchy in rural areas, particularly East Malaysia.

Digi and Celcom are recognized for their strong 4G/5G coverage and high-speed internet, with Celcom offering the fastest overall download and upload speeds.

Comparing Data Plans and Prices

While coverage and speed are critical, the cost factor is equally important. Malaysia’s mobile operators provide a variety of data plans and prices to cater to diverse requirements, including Malaysia’s sim card prices. Some options include:

  • Celcom’s postpaid plans start at RM 38 per month
  • Prepaid plans starting from RM 10
  • U Mobile is known for its cost-effective plans, although they offer relatively less data and coverage.

Certain physical prepaid SIM cards provided by mobile virtual network operators also offer additional features like VoLTE and VoWiFi, unlimited calls to specific networks, and complete data with a speed cap of approximately 6 Mbps to ensure network stability.

Where to Purchase Your Malaysia Tourist SIM

Once you’ve decided on the type of SIM card and the provider, the next step is the purchase. You can buy a SIM card at Kuala Lumpur International Airport upon arrival.

While convenient, it’s not the most recommended option due to higher costs and limited options.

A better alternative is to purchase your SIM card from:

  • an official retail store of a mobile internet provider
  • convenience stores
  • bus stations
  • online on sites like Klook.com

This ensures the best service, prices, and verification that everything works properly before leaving the store.

At Kuala Lumpur International Airport

If you prefer to get things sorted immediately, you can purchase your SIM card at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The airport hosts prepaid SIM card shops like:

  • Maxis Hotlink

Some shops, like Maxis at KLIA Terminal M Arrival Hall, operate 24/7 for your convenience.

While buying at the airport provides immediate connectivity, it’s important to note that options may be limited, and prices may be slightly higher. Therefore, exploring other options is a good idea if you’re not in a rush.

Purchased discounted SIMS at KLIA or KLIA2 and get your travel in Malaysia off to a smooth beginning.

In-City Prepaid SIM Card Shops

Consider purchasing your SIM card within the city for a wider variety and potentially better deals.

Conveniently, you can purchase mobile prepaid Malaysia SIM cards at any 7-Eleven store. Other convenience stores like KK Super Mart and My News also provide SIM card top-ups.

Establishments like Tune Talk and Bluecube are popular among tourists for purchasing SIM cards. These stores offer various options and can assist in setting up your SIM for immediate use.

Activation and Registration: Getting Your SIM Card Ready to Use

With your new SIM card in Malaysia, it’s time to activate and register it. While this may seem daunting, the process is usually straightforward and quick.

You will need a valid ID – a passport for tourists – for the registration process, which includes a fingerprint requirement.

Once the registration is done, it’s time to activate your prepaid or eSIM card. Most service providers have mobile apps that guide you through the activation process.

Quick Start Guide: Activation Steps

Activating a prepaid SIM card involves a few simple steps:

  • Download and launch the mobile app corresponding to your service provider.
  • Tap on ‘Activate SIM’ or ‘New User’.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions, including scanning the SIM barcode or inputting personal details.

For eSIM cards, the process is even more straightforward. Here’s how to set up your eSIM:

  • Purchase an eSIM card and receive a unique QR code.
  • Scan the QR code to install your eSIM profile onto your device.
  • You’re all set for your Malaysian adventure!

Understanding the Registration Requirements

The registration process for a Malaysian SIM card is efficient and can usually be completed within a few minutes. Here are the steps:

  • Present a valid ID, such as your passport, and have it copied.
  • Complete the registration form provided by the service provider.
  • Provide your fingerprint for verification purposes.

It’s worth noting that the minimum age to register a SIM card in Malaysia is 12 years old. In some cases, additional verification may be required, such as the MyTentera card issued by the National Registration Department for the Malaysian Armed Forces.

Managing Your Data: Top-Up Options and Tracking Usage

Managing your data is essential once your SIM card is activated and registered. This involves knowing how to top up your data and monitor usage.

Remember, the last thing you want is to run out of data while navigating unfamiliar streets or capturing that perfect Instagram shot!

You can add credit to your prepaid SIM card by purchasing top-ups from 24-hour convenience stores like 7-Eleven and Speedmart 99.

Alternatively, use your service provider’s app to add credit. For example, to top up a Yes Malaysia SIM card, text REL followed by your phone number and the voucher code to 0183301111.

Finding Top-Up Vendors and Convenience Stores

Running out of data mid-journey can be frustrating. Fortunately, topping up your Malaysian SIM card is easy, thanks to the numerous vendors offering this service.

Popular vendors for top-ups include:

  • Maxis/Hotlink

These vendors are found in major shopping centres, airports, and convenience stores like 7-Eleven in Kuala Lumpur. Many of these stores operate round-the-clock, ensuring you’re always connected, no matter the time of day.

Apps and Services for Monitoring Data

Keeping track of your data usage ensures you never run out when you need it most. Several apps and services can help you do this, including:

  • Data Usage Monitor
  • My Data Manager
  • Onavo Count
  • 3G Watchdog
  • Data Monitor

These apps monitor your data usage, giving you control over how much data you use at any given time.

They also generate individualized reports that help you understand your data consumption patterns, making managing your data more efficient.

In addition to these third-party apps, Malaysian telcos provide applications for tracking data consumption. Examples include:

  • Celcom Life
  • HOTLINK by Maxis

These apps can also help you set up data usage alerts, ensuring you’re always aware of your data consumption.

Staying Connected Beyond Borders: International Roaming with Your Malaysia SIM

You might wonder how to stay connected if your travels take you beyond Malaysia’s borders. The answer lies in international roaming services. However, it’s important to note that international roaming rates may be higher than local usage.

While international roaming allows you to use your Malaysian SIM card while travelling abroad, it’s also worth considering local SIM cards from the country you’re visiting. This can often be a more cost-effective and convenient solution, especially for longer trips.

International Roaming Services and Rates

International roaming is a service that lets you use your phone number while travelling abroad.

In Malaysia, this service is provided by mobile networks like Maxis, U Mobile, and Hotlink. However, it’s important to note that international roaming rates may vary based on the destination country.

As much as international roaming makes staying connected easy, it can be pretty expensive. Therefore, it’s worth exploring local SIM cards from the country you’re visiting or using WiFi hotspot services such as Roaming Man, Traveloka, and Travel Recommends.

Alternatives to International Roaming

If the high costs of international roaming are a concern, you can consider alternatives. One such option is to use a local SIM card from the country you’re visiting. This not only ensures you stay connected but can also be more cost-effective.

Another alternative is using WiFi hotspot services. Malaysian tourists travelling abroad can use services like Roaming Man, Traveloka, and Travel Recommends.

These services offer the convenience of staying connected without worrying about excessive roaming charges or purchasing a local SIM card in Malaysia.

Maximizing Your Malaysia Experience: Additional Tips and Tricks

Having a reliable Malaysian SIM card is just one part of making the most of your travel experience. Additional features of Malaysian SIM cards can further enhance your journey.

For instance, providers like Digi offer prepaid and postpaid plans specifically designed for tourists, and the Hotlink Tourist SIM card provides perks such as an 8GB high-speed internet quota.

In addition to utilizing your SIM card effectively, consider downloading local transportation apps like Grab and online food delivery services for added convenience.

Finally, always be aware of phishing scams, use legitimate service providers, and ensure your personal SIM card information is accurate to avoid network issues and maintain a reliable connection.

Summary of the best SIM cards in Malaysia

In conclusion, choosing the right Malaysian SIM card ensures a smooth and memorable travel experience.

Whether you opt for a traditional prepaid SIM card or prefer the digital convenience of an eSIM, staying connected during your Malaysian adventure is relatively easy and affordable.

How does a Prepaid Malaysia SIM card works?

It’s quite simple — most international cellphones work with a Malaysia tourist SIM card.

Telecom providers in Penang and Malaysia are based on the GSM system. 3G (UMTS) frequencies and 4G (LTE) frequencies work flawlessly on any compatible mobile phone — you may have some problems if you are coming from the USA. Please check with your mobile phone provider before traveling to Malaysia.

The main Telecom operators in Malaysia are Maxis, Digi, U Mobile, Celcom and Tune Talk and all have pretty good coverage and affordable offers for Malaysia tourist SIM cards.

Malaysia tourist SIM card Coverage in Penang and Malaysia

In most of Malaysia’s cities and main urban centers, all Malaysian Telecom operators have good 4G coverage — most times even better than hotel WiFi services.

Wherever 4G is not strong, 3G and 2G signal is widely available in Peninsular Malaysia. But if you are planning on traveling Borneo  remember that outside of Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and the other cities, mobile coverage is not very good. Among all operators, Celcom has the best Borneo coverage outside of cities and in rural areas in East Malaysia.

Topping up Data on your Malaysia tourist SIM card

Prepaid SIM cards in Malaysia, like their name implies, work based on a pre-existing credit you purchase with your Malaysia tourist SIM card.

What happens when your credit expires or you have no more data? Simple. Most 24/hours convenience stores like 7-Eleven and Speedmart 99 sell pre-paid top-ups for all Malaysia tourist SIM cards.

Just pay whatever amount you want to recharge, and the store clerk will print a receipt containing a number. You have to access your mobile operator menu on your mobile (generally by pressing the “#” key followed by some numbers) and a recorded voice will assist you to prompt that top-up code.

You will receive an SMS confirming the successful top-up, and you are done!

What is the Best prepaid plan in Malaysia for tourists?

The best prepaid plan in Malaysia for tourists vastly depends on your needs and where you are traveling.

We have tried many Telecom companies over our 10 years+ of life in Malaysia, and these days, we always recommend these Malaysia tourist SIM cards to all our friends and family who come visit:

U Mobile Tourist Sim Card

U Mobile Tourist SIM Card is great, as it comes with UNLIMITED Internet data (including free WhatsApp, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Grab and other important Apps) for only RM 30 for 30 Days . That’s RM1 (0.20$ cents) a day for all the apps and the browsing you want! This Malaysia tourist SIM card also has a 3GB hotspot you can use to connect and browse with your laptop or other devices.

If you stay in Malaysia for 7 days or less, U Mobile offers an RM12 for 7 days package with a 1GB hotspot and also unlimited calling time to all networks. Both are pretty sweet deals.

Digi 4G Plus Tourist SIM Card

Digi is another operator with good coverage and cheap prices. They offer a Digi 4G Plus Traveller SIM card package that costs RM40 for 15 Days and offers 10GB of data and 1GB a day for social networks like Whatsapp, Facebook and WeChat, and 30 minutes of calls.

They also have a cheaper RM20 per 7 Day plan with 2GB of data and 1GB a day for social networks like Whatsapp, Facebook and WeChat, and 10 minutes of calls.

Check it out and, for a discount, consider  buying one in advance here .

Tune Talk Traveller Data Plans

Another option is the Tune Talk card by AirAsia. It comes in two different data sizes, the 15GB lite and 20GB power plan. 4G high-speed Internet is 5GB for the lite and 10GB for the power plan.

The lite plan costs RM25 and the power plan RM50.

Check it out and considering buying one in advance with a discount here .

Celcom Malaysia Tourist SIM card

Even Celcom offers a tourist SIM card package for RM30 for 10 Days . It includes 10GB of high-speed 4G Internet, unlimited WhatsApp and WeChat, and 1GB free data roaming in Thailand and Singapore

Check it out and consider buying one in advance with a discount here .

What is the best prepaid plan in Penang?

We believe that, based on our experience, cost and coverage, the best pre-paid SIM card for tourists in Penang are Digi and U Mobile.

They work fine and you won’t need much more data than what they offer.

Where Can I get a Malaysia tourist SIM card?

You have three main options:

Getting a Malaysia tourist SIM card Before you Leave Home

If you, like us, want to minimize waiting times and headaches when you travel, why don’t you get your Malaysia tourist SIM card before you travel to Malaysia? It’s very easy and you can do so via Klook, a site for travel bookings in Asia.

This is the best and cheapest options, as Klook always offers discounts

These SIM cards work best for those tourists who want data and can make local and international calls via WhatsApp and Skype. If you are looking for regular calling minutes, you may be better off by visiting a Telecom operator center when in Malaysia.

But we still recommend you pre-order your Malaysia tourist SIM card from home and pick it up at one of these airports:

Kuala Lumpur KLIA2 airport Penang airport Johor Bharu airport Langkawi airport Kota Kinabalu airport

Click on the links above to be redirected to a purchase page where you’ll be able to see pictures and read more about all the available options. Those cards are Tune Talk mostly, but you can also get

Digi Malaysia tourist SIM card in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bharu airport

Celcom Malaysia tourist SIM card in Kuala Lumpur KLIA2 airport

Getting a Malaysia tourist SIM card in a shop

If you can’t or don’t want to preorder your Malaysia tourist SIM card, you can buy one on arrival at any Malaysian airport or once you get to a city.

Remember that, this way, you may have to wait longer for queues or not be able to be immediately connected as you disembark. But no issues: if you go to a shop, you’ll be able to talk to a representative who may help you get started with your Malaysia tourist SIM card.

Malaysia tourist SIM card

It will be however more expensive, as shops don’t have the discounts that pre-booking on Klook has. The best again is getting your tourist SIM card in advance at Kuala Lumpur airport or Kota Kinabalu airport .

Take a WiFi Hotspot with You

The last option you have is to rent a WiFi hotspot device to connect and roam with no hassle. This works definitely better for families and groups, as these portable hotspots usually allow up to 5 devices to be connected simultaneously, and have unlimited data .

Prices start at RM13/day and you can rent and pick up these devices either in Kuala Lumpur ( KLIA or KLIA2 ) or in other nearby Southeast Asian hubs.

Skyroam  (which is, of course, a bit more expensive at RM40++/day ) is a more powerful wifi hotspot that can connect up to 10 devices, has an unlimited amount of data, and, the perk, it has 16 hours of battery life and also works as a power bank. At last, it’s a global router, so if you let’s say, hop over the border from Penang to Thailand , you will still have Internet.

You may want to consider renting a Skyroam hotspot if you travel in a bigger group, for a longer time, or need a reliable internet connection for longer hours

This is a complete list with direct purchase links for your convenience:

Thailand Bangkok Don Mueang Airport Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport

We hope that this guide will help you get the best-prepaid plan in Malaysia and a traveller SIM card that suits your needs.

6 Best eSIM For Malaysia (Cheaper Data Plans)

Looking to buy a Malaysian eSim for an upcoming trip? This detailed guide will show you all the best eSim data plans for Malaysia !

At A Glance: Our Top eSim for Malaysia

  • Best Malaysia eSim Maya Mobile
  • Best Value For Money Up To 20GB Nomad
  • Best Unlimited Data Plans Holafly
  • Best Renewable Monthly Plans Ubigi
  • Best Asia eSim Plan AIS eSIM2FLY

Esims are the best way to avoid the stress of getting a local SIM or paying bucketloads of data roaming charges! I have been using them all over the world for the last 2 years.

Whether you need data for a few days or a few months – there’s at least one Malaysia eSim provider for you. Scroll down to find your perfect eSim data plan for your travels.

ESIM Product Comparison

Airalo is one of the most popular providers of eSim cards for international travel. They’re usually one of the cheapest providers, and Malaysia is no exception. Airalo eSims for Malaysia start at $4.5, which can help you stay connected for an entire week. Here are all their Malaysia eSim plans:

  • 1 GB / 7 Days for $4.5
  • 2 GB / 15 Days for $8
  • 3 GB / 30 Days for $10.5
  • 5 GB / 30 Days for $15
  • 10 GB / 30 Days for $25
  • 20 GB / 30 Days for $40

You don’t get a phone number with an Airalo eSim, but that is the case with most international providers. What you do get is a generous mobile data allowance for a fair price, as well as Internet access through Digi, the provider with the widest network coverage in the country. You’ll have a stable Internet connection with their mobile plan, as well as high-speed downloads.

  • Great value for money
  • Access to the best network provider in the country
  • Not the cheapest option

Maya Mobile

The Malaysian eSims from Maya Mobile are some of the best options on the market. It may seem like you can’t beat the leaders like Airalo or Nomad, but Maya are certainly trying.

They offer 30-day plans as follows:

  • Unlimited data in Malaysia: $59 USD
  • Unlimited data in Asia/Pacific: $59 USD (12 countries)

You only get 4G with their eSim cards which is what most Malaysia tourist eSim providers offer, but they use two of the best mobile network operators: Maxis & Celcom (who have the best coverage 4G in Malaysia).

They also allow tethering/hotspots so their unlimited plans are amazing for working in Malaysia or for digital nomads. But there is no phone number – so no calls or SMS.

So with Maya, you choose between smaller data packages or unlimited in Malaysia or Asia (12 popular countries (Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam).

  • Cheapest per GB
  • Unlimited data plans
  • Best networks
  • Hotspot/tethering allowed
  • All plans 30 days (but renewing is easy)
  • No calls or SMS

Nomad is a popular provider for Malaysia eSim roaming with a good variety of plans . Their plans start at just $4 for 1 GB of data and go up to $170 for 100 GB of data, so there are plenty of options to choose from. Here are all of Nomad’s Malaysia eSim data plans:

  • 1 GB / 7 Days for $4
  • 3 GB / 15 Days for $8
  • 5 GB / 15 Days for $12
  • 10 GB / 30 Days for $19
  • 15 GB / 30 Days for $25
  • 20 GB / 30 Days for $34
  • 30 GB / 30 Days for $60
  • 50 GB / 30 Days for $90
  • 100 GB / 60 Days for $170

Nomad’s eSims allow you to connect to the Maxis network, which is the second-best provider in the country. They’re not quite as popular as Digi, but they still promise a stable connection and coverage throughout Malaysia. Nomad is the best option for eSim plans with a data allowance of up to 20 GB, but their plans with a larger allowance are quite expensive.

At this point, you’re better off paying for an unlimited data plan, as long as you’re fine with the fact that you can’t create a hotspot to share it.

  • The cheapest data plans up to 20 GB
  • Easy top-ups
  • Plans with larger data allowances are expensive

Holafly is another one of the leading eSim providers. They’re usually the best option because they offer eSims with unlimited data plans in Malaysia:

  • 5 Days for $19
  • 10 Days for $34
  • 15 Days for $47
  • 20 Days for $54
  • 30 Days for $64
  • 60 Days for $84
  • 90 Days for $99

Although unlimited data is included with all of their eSim plans, the major downside of Holafly is that they do not allow data sharing. You can’t set up a hotspot with their virtual SIM, so you can have Internet access only on the device on which you install the Holafly eSim.

This provider allows you to connect to the Maxis network, which is the second-best provider in the country, right after Giga.

  • Unlimited data with all plans
  • Good value for money
  • Data sharing is not possible

Ubigi is an international provider popular for its regional data-only plans. They don’t have any plans that offer coverage just in Malaysia, but the Asian country is included in several of their regional and global plans.

Their cheapest prepaid eSim for Malaysia is an Asia plan that includes 500 MB , valid for a day for the price of $3. The plan that I think offers the best value for money is a renewable monthly plan that includes 5 GB of data for just $24 .

Ubigi’s plans are more expensive than those from Airalo and Nomad, but that’s because they offer network coverage in multiple countries in Asia. If you’re planning to visit other countries in the region in addition to Malaysia, Ubigi’s plans are worth considering.

  • Regional coverage
  • Cheapest one-day data plans
  • Renewable monthly plans
  • No Indonesia-only plans

AIS eSIM2FLY

AIS eSim2Fly is an eSim provider based in Thailand and they have one of the best eSim data plans for travelers in Asia . They offer two main plans – a global plan and a regional Asia plan. The regional plan is the best option for travelers in Malaysia because it gets you

  • 6 GB of high-speed internet for 15 days, for $16
  • unlimited 2G once that runs out
  • a local Thai number – calls & SMS

So, this is a great option for just a small package of data with phone and texts. AND this AIS eSim includes coverage in 34 countries in Asia, and it’s without a doubt one of the best options for tourists who want to explore the region.

  • Unlimited 2G data (once 6GB runs out)
  • Phone calls & texts
  • Excellent for travelers in Asia
  • 30 countries included
  • Only 6GB available

Benefits of Getting an eSim in Malaysia

The key benefit of having an eSim in Malaysia is that you will have Internet access at your fingertips. While you might have access to free WiFi in shops and restaurants in the bigger cities, you’ll struggle to find a free connection in the more remote areas, and an eSim with mobile data is the only way to ensure you will always have Internet.

This beats paying for data roaming because it’s much cheaper to purchase an eSim (or a prepaid physical sim card ) than to pay roaming charges.

The advantage of getting an eSim as opposed to a physical sim is convenience. You don’t have to remember to pack a sim tray ejector tool, if you have a dual sim feature in your phone you can keep the other slot free, and you don’t have to walk around a foreign city looking for a place to purchase a sim card.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSims in Malaysia

Digi and Maxis are the two best and most popular network operators in Malaysia. They both offer eSims, but it’s worth noting that Maxis only has eSims for postpaid customers. Digi, on the other hand, includes eSims in their prepaid plan, so they’re an option you should consider.

You can purchase any prepaid Digi sim plan, and then submit a request to change it to an eSim. You can try to do it online or just walk into a physical Digi store and ask them if you can immediately apply for an eSim. Digi eSim data plans are very affordable and a great option for tourists in Malaysia. You can get 12 GB of data (including unlimited YouTube streaming), plus a phone number for just some $8!

Maxis has an entire brand dedicated to prepaid sims and it’s known as Hotlink. Hotlink offers eSims only to their postpaid subscribers, so you can purchase a prepaid plan only with a physical sim card. They do have some excellent physical sim cards for tourists, including an unlimited data plan with unrestricted sharing for some $13.

Devices Compatible with eSim in Malaysia

All devices (phones, tablets, smartwatches, etc.) that are compatible with eSims will work with eSims in Malaysia. This includes iPhone devices from the iPhone XS onward, Samsung Galaxy S devices from the S20 onward, and Google Pixel 2 devices and newer. Some other Androids also have eSim capability, and the best way to check whether your phone supports a virtual sim is to dial *#06#.

This will bring up a list of unique identifying numbers for your smartphone. Look for an EID number because that indicates that your phone is compatible with embedded sim cards. If there is no EID number, your device most likely doesn’t support the technology and you should look into physical sim cards instead.

Data Needed When Traveling to Malaysia

How much data you need for your trip to Malaysia depends on how you plan to use the data and the length of your trip. If you want a data plan just to be on the safe side when it comes to Internet access, you’ll be fine with one of the plans that have a lower data allowance.

Some 3-5 GB of data should be more than enough for trips of up to two weeks, especially if you’re going to use mobile data just to check map directions, social media, news, and email.

However, if you plan to work on your device, or you want to be able to watch as many TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube videos as you want, you should look into data plans with a larger allowance simply because videos use up data more quickly.

Buying a Prepaid Sim Card for Malaysia in 2024

malaysia tourist data plan

Are you planning your trip to Malaysia and wondering what is the best way to stay connected when traveling to Malaysia? Don't get fooled by slow overseas data plans and don't let high data roaming charges ruin your trip. This is the ultimate guide for finding the best sim card for your trip to Malaysia in 2024.

Find out everything you need to know about buying a sim card for tourists in Malaysia, where to buy a sim card, up to date prices as per April 2024, the best e-sim cards for Malaysia, the best 4G/5G network, my recommendation, a vlog about my arrival in Kuala Lumpur and buying a local prepaid sim card, info about international sim cards and more.

Figuring out how to stay connected is one of the first things I do when planning my next trip. Being a  full time nomadic travel blogger  since 2012 I have been looking for the best ways to get connected for more than 10 years now. In the past I always used to buy a local prepaid sim card in every country  on arrival, nowadays I pretty much always use e-sim cards to stay connected.

Since I like to document all my travel tips and I am also trying to  visit every country in the world  you can already find more than 200 sim card guides on Traveltomtom from all over the world:  China , Hong Kong ,  Saudi Arabia , Singapore ,  Thailand , Bangkok ,  Indonesia , Bali ,  Vietnam , Philippines ,  USA , Europe , Dubai , Istanbul , London , Paris , Brazil , Australia , New Zealand , etc.

Traveltomtom also wrote a specific guide for the best e-sim cards for traveling to Malaysia in 2024 .

So next time you are planning your adventure abroad come check out Traveltomtom for the latest prepaid and e-sim card advice for your next holiday destination. Bookmark me and let me help you save money!

Why buying a sim card for Malaysia?

Life can be pretty challenging these days without a working data connection on your mobile and so is traveling. Think about ordering a taxi through an app, getting directions from Google Maps or simply staying in touch with your loved ones back home. No need to tell you that traveling to Malaysia is much easier with a local prepaid sim card.

Traveltomtom recommends you to buy a prepaid sim card in Malaysia, because it is easy, cheap and takes only a couple minutes. It is the best way to save on high roaming costs. Also a reminder that public WiFi is often slow and unreliable and it is an UNSECURED network. The use of a VPN is recommended.

Be aware: your phone needs to be UNLOCKED to make sure a local prepaid sim card from Malaysia is working in your phone. This also counts for international prepaid sim cards and e-sim cards for Malaysia.

My recommendation

Based on research and user experience Traveltomtom recommends a Digi prepaid sim card for traveling in Malaysia. For around $10 USD you can already get 30 GB data for 1 month.

You can also buy a lot of unlimited data prepaid sim cards in Malaysia, but they are all on limited data speed of mostly 6 Mbps and therefore not directly recommended.

Digi has truly high speed internet and no data speed cap and therefore Traveltomtom's first recommendation!

Of course does Traveltomtom also recommend e-sim cards and there are some amazing e-sim card deals you can directly order on the internet.

Keep in mind that on arrival in Malaysia, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport or in any phone store tourists can only buy physical prepaid sim cards. E-sim cards are not available for tourists in Malaysia, only on the internet.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Malaysia via either Nomad , SimOptions or Airalo .

Traveltomtom wrote a complete guide including a comparison of the best e-sim cards for traveling to Malaysia  and much more detailed info about ordering an e-sim card on the internet and an answer to FAQ about using e-sims when traveling abroad.

Another way to NOT swap physical sim cards is a portable WiFi device, but Traveltomtom is NOT a fan. Check out my article for the pros and cons of pocket WiFi’s .

Mobile internet operators in Malaysia

There are 6 mobile operators in Malaysia and they all offer prepaid sim cards for tourists:

  • Maxis/Hotlink
  • Unifi/Bebas

On top of the above mobile internet providers there are also a couple MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) but they are too small to consider as a good prepaid sim card for Malaysia.

Prices for data plans differ slightly per provider but 4G/5G network coverage differs much more significantly. Below I show you the prices and the mobile internet network coverage maps in Malaysia, make a comparison of all the Malaysia sim cards and find you the best one.

Where to buy a sim card for Malaysia

Buying a sim card at kuala lumpur airport.

More time consuming but the easiest way to get connected when arriving in Malaysia is to buy a sim card at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Even before passport control you can already buy a Malaysia sim card from either the Hotlink Maxis, Tune Talk or Digi shop. It is impossible to miss when walking up to immigration on your right hand side. When you walk out into the arrivals hall you will immediately stumble upon the prepaid sim card shops on your left hand side: U Mobile, Maxis Hotlink and Tune Talk. On the right hand side there is Bluecube. All prepaid sim card shops at Kuala Lumpur Airport are open 24 hours, but mind you that not all shops take credit card. Tune Talk and Bluecube only accept cash!

You can not buy an e-sim card at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, only physical prepaid sim cards.

If you are curious what it is like to arrive and buy a prepaid sim card at Kuala Lumpur Airport then watch my YouTube vlog above with my experiences.

If you arrive on one of the other major international airports in Malaysia then there are also kiosks that sell prepaid sim cards for tourists at: Langkawi, Kuching, Penang and Kota Kinabalu.

Phone stores

You can of course also buy a sim card for Malaysia in any random phone store around the country. Traveltomtom advices to buy a sim card from an official retail store of one of the mobile internet providers. To find the nearest one to you simply use Google Maps.

In an official mobile internet operator retail store you will get the best service, prices and they make sure that everything works properly before you leave the store and you are connected to the internet.

Buying a local prepaid sim card on arrival in Malaysia is a little bit of a hassle after a long flight. If you buy a sim card for traveling in Malaysia on the internet you arrive prepared and as soon as the plane lands you are online.

If your phone is not e-sim compatible you can order a physical prepaid sim card for Malaysia via SimOptions . But if your phone is e-sim compatible then simply order an e-sim card for Malaysia on the internet.

For more detailed info about using e-sim cards when traveling to Malaysia check out Traveltomtom's complete guide with everything you need to know before buying an e-sim card for Malaysia in 2024 .

Registration process

When buying a prepaid sim card in Malaysia you need to bring your passport. In the shop they will take a copy and register your new prepaid sim card on your name. You will also need to give your fingerprint.

The purchased prepaid sim cards in Malaysia are activated within minutes. Traveltomtom advices to directly put the new sim card in your phone and see if it works before you leave the store. Also ask your provider how to check your balance and remaining data bundle.

If for some reason you do not wish to register with your passport then looking into  ordering an e-sim card for Malaysia or order an international prepaid sim card for Malaysia . These forms of getting connected when traveling to Malaysia do NOT require identification.

Prices prepaid sim cards in Malaysia

All the below prices and info are up dated as per April 2024. Prices are in Malaysian Ringgit: 10 MYR = $2.1 USD and $1 USD = 4.73 MYR.

Unfortunately there are still no e-sim cards available for tourists. When buying a prepaid sim card on arrival in Malaysia you can only get a physical prepaid sim card.

  • Unlimited data (3Mbps) + calls for 30 days = 35 RM - $8.3 USD
  • Unlimited data (6Mbps) + calls + 5 GB uncapped data for 30 days = 45 RM - $10.7 USD

See all the prepaid Celcom data packages in the link. Celcom does only provide physical prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards are not available for tourists.

u mobile sim card malaysia

At U Mobile they offer 3 different prepaid sim card deals for Malaysia:

Click here for all the U Mobile prepaid sim card deals . U Mobile does only provide physical prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards are not available for tourists.

yes sim card malaysia

Yes was called Yes 4G, but with the new 5G era coming soon, it is simply Yes Malaysia now. Yes is a fairly new mobile internet provider and their network is much smaller than other providers. However, they offer 3 good prepaid sim card deals:

  • 10 GB data for 30 days = 15 RM - $3.6 USD
  • 20 GB data for 30 days = 20 RM - $4.7 USD
  • Unlimited data for 30 days = 30 RM - $7.1 USD

These plans do not come with any calling minutes. For more info check the Yes Malaysia website . Yes does only provide physical prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards are not available for tourists.

Unifi - Bebas

unifi bebas sim card malaysia

Another small mobile internet provider is Unifi. Their prepaid data deals are called Bebas and they offer Unlimited data packages:

  • Unlimited data for 7 days = 12 RM - $2.8 USD
  • Unlimited data for 1 month = 35 RM - $8.3 USD

Best 4G/5G network in Malaysia

Sim card prices are important to determining the best Malaysia sim card, but so is the network coverage. Imagine traveling on long bus rides or staying in the beautiful Perhentian Islands and having no phone signal. Therefore I compared the Malaysia 4G/5G coverage maps  from all mobile internet providers in Malaysia for you.

Is there 5G in Malaysia?

Surprisingly 5G in Malaysia is not as developed as you had wished. Nearby countries Thailand and Singapore offer some of the best 5G coverage in the world, but Malaysia is far behind. As of April 2024 there are some tourist destinations in Malaysia with a 5G signal, but not everywhere and definitely not with every sim card.

Unifi 4G/5G coverage map

unifi 4g 5g network coverage map malaysia 2024

Yes 4G/5G coverage map

yes 4g 5g network coverage map malaysia 2024

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Malaysia in 2024.

Traveltomtom comes to the simple conclusion that Yes, Unifi and U Mobile have a lot to catch up when comparing their 4G/5G network strength with Maxis, DiGi and Celcom. Especially when you decide to travel to Borneo it is not recommended to buy a sim card from either Yes, Unifi or U Mobile as their 4G/5G network coverage in Borneo is very limited.

Overall Celcom has the strongest network coverage and therefore Celcom has the best 4G/5G network in Malaysia in 2024. When looking for the best sim card for traveling to Borneo you should either buy a Celcom or a Maxis/Hotlink prepaid sim card.

Tips for how to get around Malaysia

Let me help you find the best bus, boat, train and flight tickets when traveling in Malaysia. Check out the search engine for public transport and be amazed what they find. Try it below yourself.

Powered by 12Go system

At 12Go Asia you will get all the modes of transportations all in one overview.

Bus, boat, ferry, train and flights are all displayed together with travel time, prices, available seats, etc. and the best thing is that you can directly book your ticket online and instantly get a confirmation on your phone.

Best prepaid sim card in Malaysia in 2024

As you have seen prices for data sim cards in Malaysia are very affordable and for $10 USD you can already get unlimited data for the whole month. But be aware that you can buy data packages with different internet speed. Unlimited internet obviously sounds the best, but max data speed is 6 Mbps for example with Celcom, Maxis/Hotlink.

Personally, I would always choose that sim card that does not have a speed cap.

At first it seems like the Celcom, Maxis/Hotlink and the U Mobile prepaid sim cards are great deals with unlimited internet for around $10 - $12 USD but the max speed of 6 Mbps puts me a little off.

Therefore Traveltomtom rates Digi as the best prepaid sim card for tourists in Malaysia as they have no speed caps and truly high speed internet. They also have an amazing deal of 30 GB data for just $8 USD and the Digi 4G/5G network in Malaysia is very extensive.

Traveltomtom does not recommend a Unifi or Yes prepaid sim card for traveling in Malaysia because of their weaker mobile network.

Since prices for prepaid sim cards for tourists are so low there is no point in comparing e-sim cards for Malaysia with local prepaid sim cards.

The e-sim cards for Malaysia that you can order on the internet have the advantage that you can arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. Which means when the plane lands you are already online. No more visiting a sim card shop and installing a physical prepaid sim card.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Malaysia via either SimOptions or Airalo .

What people talk about us

The most daring travelers have already tried Malaysiaesim.com. Will you?

Jamie Nichols testimonial

I recently used the eSIM from Malaysiaesim.com for my trip to Malaysia, and I must say I’m impressed with their service. Immediately following the transaction completion I received the information I needed to install the eSIM remotely, something that was aided by the copious documentation that was provided in my language (English). The eSIM was successfully installed on my iPhone 11 and I think I am good to go.

Karl Bedrich testimonial

I highly recommend the unlimited plan for 15 days from Malaysiaesim.com to anyone looking for an easy and affordable way to stay connected while traveling in Malaysia. While I did encounter some difficulties installing the esim, the team was quick to respond and helped me resolve the issue in a timely and professional manner. The esim itself was fast and reasonably priced.

Marcin testimonial Trustpilot

It worked straight away after data plan activation as per instruction. 10GB for $12 for 15 days is amazing. And best thing is eSIM which is used for data only and if needed still someone can call your primary/home number. I couldn’t be happier with the service. I will recommend this to anyone who is about to travel to Vietnam, Malaysia, and other Southeastern Asia.

Leon Sutherland

Bought eSIM a couple of days in advance of entering Malaysia. Activated at the border by sending text as per instructions. Immediately up and running with speedy internet usage. Had to make change to APN’s to facilitate personal hotspot usage but again followed simple instructions provided and works perfectly. All in all a great experience from a well priced package.

Frequently asked questions

If you still have questions about this service? We are here to help

You can check if your smartphone works with eSIM in our up-to-date esim-supported device list . Remember that, to use eSIM, your device must be carrier unlocked.

At your convenience, you should buy an eSIM the day before your departure date or upon arrival at your destination. To install it, your device must get connected with WiFi or a mobile data network.

After your successful payment, the eSIM QR code and installation guide will be delivered to your email immediately. Scan the QR code using your camera, then when you land in Malaysia, you can stay connected with the supported local network. If you didn’t receive your eSIM plan within 10 minutes, please check your spam folder or promotion folder first, then contact us via [email protected] .

Your data plan starts when you activate your plan, not from the time you scan the received QR code and add it to your device.

Once you purchase an eSIM, you will receive it immediately to your email address. You then just need to scan the QR code to activate the SIM. Note that no refunds can be made once you have purchased your eSIM. See our refund policy for more information.

The eSIM is data-only and does not come with local phone number. It only allows the use of mobile data, so you cannot receive or send calls or SMS.

The Malaysia eSIM gives you fast speed data (4G LTE), so you can enjoy fast Internet connection in both urban and rural areas. After running out of high-speed data capacity, the speed returns to 128 kbps. The speed can be slower in some remote areas.

Yes, you need to enable Data roaming mode to access the Internet with eSIM. Rest assured that if you only enable data roaming with Malaysia eSIM, you will not be charged.

Yes, you can keep your WhatsApp number and all your contacts and conversations. You can use it like normal during your trip in Malaysia.

If you use up your data or your plan has expired, you will not be able to access the Internet. If you want to continue using it, you can top up more data or buy a new package.

In most cases, once an eSIM plan is set up, it can’t be reinstalled or reissued. If you have trouble, please don’t remove your eSIM plan – instead, contact us via [email protected] first.

If you have not installed the eSIM on your device, you can get the QR code back by contacting our 24/7 customer support team at [email protected] or our online chat. We will resend the QR code.

After your order, we will send a QR code to your email. You can either open it on your computer or print the QR code. On your mobile, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add data plan and scan the QR code. Now, you will be able to switch between your Malaysiaesim data plan and the original plan from your carrier. The data package will work only when you arrive in Malaysia. After landing, turn on data roaming and activate the data plan. All eSIM products come with a complete installation guide.

Yes, Malaysia eSIM plans work everywhere in Malaysia. We choose and offer the best data packages which provide the best nationwide data coverage.

Yes, the Malaysia eSIM can be shared with other devices.

No. You can’t scan the same QR code on multiple devices. Besides, one QR code can be used once.

How can I check my data balance?

To check how much data you have used, go to the data settings of your device. We cannot access your device to tell you how much data you have remaining.

You do not need to delete eSIM when using up the package. However, if you want to remove it, you can go to the SIM card manager of your phone.

If you are using an Apple device, you can use two sims at the same time. Just choose your SIM card as the line for phone calls and SMS, and the Malaysia eSIM for cellular data. Please make sure that you do not leave your SIM card activated, because your mobile network provider may apply roaming fees to receive or send phone calls and SMS.

About Malaysia

Malaysia is located in Southeast Asia and is ruled over by a Sultan. It has iconic landmarks, with the most famous being the Twin Petronas Towers in the capital, Kuala Lumpur. Location-wise, Malaysia is located just north of Indonesia. The two countries even share a landmass on Kalimantan island.

For tourism, Malaysia combines the glitz of a modern shopping city, alongside the soothing ocean and natural mountains. Currently, Indonesia provides the second highest number of tourists to Malaysia, with Indonesians flying into the country regularly for shopping, vacation, business, and medical treatments.

While staying in Malaysia, it is essential to have a good internet connection. To facilitate this need, Traveloka now provides Malaysia-based internet packages for tourists. These can even be obtained before your departure.

Popular Travel Destinations in Malaysia

Offering an intoxicating mixture of modern city rich cultural history, and exotic natural destinations, Malaysia is a top destination for tourists. Indonesians being no exception. There are many incredible places to visit—here are just the top 5:

Kuala Lumpur

As the country capital, Kuala Lumpur is a display of Malaysia’s modern heart. Filled to the brim with skyscrapers that rub shoulders with a multitude of historically classic buildings in colonial architecture, KL will satisfy visitors who explore the city, even just on foot. Not just a tourist destination, KL is suitable for all traveling needs from shopping to food, and even business.

Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu is the capital of Sabah and the center for the State of Sabah’s government on the west coast of Kalimantan. The city faces the South China Sea, which gives the city an extraordinary view.

Tourists come to the city to see the exquisite natural beauty on offer. Not just the beaches, though—people also visit Mount Kinabalu, Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, and Manukan Island. There are many places to visit.

In addition to modern city touring and beautiful nature, you should also visit Georgetown—the historical center of the Malacca Strait. At more than 200 years old, Georgetown is rich in history and has over 12.000 colonial buildings and the mural of the city’s rich history. There are also many coffee shops and street food vendors. This cultural and historical importance has led to the capital of Penang being crowned a UNESCO site of World Heritage.

Melaka City

Another area of historical importance in Malaysia—the City of Malacca. This city has been a central hub of the Malay civilization since the 15th century. Many who have visited the town make the comparison with the beautiful European city of Lisbon, Portugal. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Melaka City offers historical tours to many places such as A’Famosa Fort, Christ Church, Stadthuys, and Jonker Street.

Located close to Sumatra, Penang is a leading destination for Indonesian tourists. It is the leading destination for people wanting medical treatment, shopping, culinary tours, and pure relaxation. This multicultural region has many wonders, none more so than the trip to Penang Hill, which will have you traversing up as high as 833 meters above sea level. It is a mandatory stop for all those who want to see the stunning island from a high vantage point.

You will now be able to switch between your Holafly data plan and the original plan from your provider. The Holafly data plan will only be operational once you arrive at your destination. Once you land, turn on data roaming on your cell phone settings and activate the Holafly data plan. Consult your phone’s user manual for more details on adding a data plan. All eSIM products come with comprehensive set-up instructions.

Should I install my eSIM before travelling?

Set up your eSIM before your departure. Once you reach your destination, just activate the data plan and turn on data roaming. We recommend you print the QR code and take it with you on your vacation just in case. Remember that you need internet access to activate the eSIM. Set up is quick and you will be able to enjoy your data plan right away.

How can I check my data balance?

You can manage your eSIM plan details and access all purchased data plans by logging into your Holafly Center through the Holafly website.

How many times can I use my eSIM card?

If needed or when changing phones during your trip, you can transfer your eSIM. However, note that you can only transfer the eSIM to two devices—the original one and a new one. Once you’ve installed it on a different device than the original, you won’t be able to reinstall it on the original device and you must deliver the eSIM from the original device to install it in the second device.

Can I delete the Holafly eSIM once I’ve used my data?

Yes! But keep in mind that you don’t need to do so. As soon as your plan expires your eSIM will no longer work.

Can I use my physical SIM card and Holafly eSIM at the same time?

If you are using an Apple device, you can use your SIM card and your eSIM at the same time. Choose the SIM card for phone calls and SMS, and Holafly eSIM for data from your device. Please remember that if you leave your SIM card activated, your cellular network provider may apply data roaming charges to receive or make phone calls as well as SMS.

How do I get a refund?

At Holafly we are aware that our users may have unforeseen events after making the purchase. Therefore, you can request a refund in the following circumstances: – You bought the eSIM without checking the compatibility with your cellphone. – You canceled your trip or you no longer need the eSIM service. – Our eSIMs generally work fine, but if you experience connection issues, we can provide you with a full or partial refund. Once the refund is approved, you will receive the money on to the same account with which you made the payment. This process can take between 5 to 10 business days. For more details, terms and conditions, we invite you to read our Refund Policy .

To which mobile network or carrier will I connect at my destination?

Your eSIM will connect to all the local phone networks that Holafly partners up with. You can review them in the Technical Specs tab.

How long does it take to activate my eSIM?

Your eSIM data activates instantly once you enable roaming in the Holafly eSIM, initiating the data plan at that moment.

Foreign tourist arrivals in India will cross pre-pandemic level in 2024

Recent tourism data indicates an annual growth of 305.4 per cent in foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) in 2023. In 2023, 9.23 million foreign tourists visited India. Although the FTAs arrival number is still less than the pre-pandemic number of 10.93 million in 2019, experts believe in 2024 we might cross the FTAs arrival number of pre-pandemic days.

A man on stage making an investment announcement in Indonesia

Investment includes new cloud and AI infrastructure, major AI skilling initiatives , and support for Indonesia’s growing developer community

Read this in Bahasa Indonesia .

Jakarta, April 30, 2024 – Today, Microsoft announced it will invest US$1.7 billion over the next four years in new cloud and AI infrastructure in Indonesia, as well as AI skilling opportunities for 840,000 people, and support for the nation’s growing developer community. It represents the single largest investment in Microsoft’s 29-year history in the country.

Together, these initiatives will help achieve the Indonesian government’s Golden Indonesia 2045 Vision, which aims to transform the nation into a global economic powerhouse.

“This new generation of AI is reshaping how people live and work everywhere, including in Indonesia,” said Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, Microsoft. “The investments we are announcing today – spanning digital infrastructure, skilling, and support for developers – will help Indonesia thrive in this new era.”

Budi Arie Setiadi, Minister of Communications and Information Technology of the Republic of Indonesia emphasized the significance of Indonesia’s partnership with Microsoft in realizing the ambitious vision of Golden Indonesia 2045. “Indonesia’s collaboration with Microsoft on AI perfectly aligns with our ambition for a future driven by digital innovation. I am confident this partnership will open up new horizons for Indonesia, positioning us not only as consumers of technology but as pivotal contributors to the global technological supply chain,” he said.

Dharma Simorangkir, President Director of Microsoft Indonesia, said: “Our investment sets a new milestone for Indonesia’s digital landscape. We aim to empower Indonesians with the infrastructure and skills needed for the AI era, aligning with our national vision for digital prowess. It’s a crucial step towards making Indonesia a hub for digital talent and innovation.”

Building a strong foundation for AI transformation

The digital infrastructure investment builds on Microsoft’s Berdayakan Indonesia (Empower Indonesia) initiative, announced in February 2021, to accelerate inclusive economic growth. This included plans to establish the company’s first datacenter region in the country.

The investment announced today will enable Microsoft to meet the growing demand for cloud computing services in Indonesia. It will also allow Indonesia to capitalize on the significant economic and productivity opportunities presented by the latest AI technology.

According to research by Kearney , AI could contribute nearly US$1 trillion to Southeast Asia’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 2030, of which Indonesia is poised to capture US$366 billion.

Focusing on skills to unlock an AI-powered economy

A man on stage making a Microsoft skilling announcement

Microsoft today also announced a broader commitment to provide AI skilling opportunities for 2.5 million people in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states by 2025. This training and support will be delivered in partnership with governments, nonprofit and corporate organizations, and communities in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Microsoft’s skilling commitment is expected to benefit 840,000 people in Indonesia by providing:

  • students with technical and vocational education and training in AI skills through the AI TEACH for Indonesia program
  • women with opportunities and support to build careers in cybersecurity via the new Ready4AI&Security program
  • young people with AI fluency training to enhance the employability and work readiness of those from underserved and underrepresented communities
  • employees of nonprofit organizations with knowledge of, and skills in, AI and digital technologies.

Enabling developers to realize Indonesia’s AI potential

Nadella highlighted the critical role of developers in harnessing AI to fulfill Indonesia’s potential as a digital economy. Microsoft will continue to help foster the growth of the country’s developer community through new initiatives such as AI Odyssey , which is expected to help 10,000 Indonesian developers become AI subject matter experts by learning new skills and earning Microsoft credentials.

Over 3.1 million developers in Indonesia use GitHub, the Microsoft-owned software development, collaboration, and innovation platform. This makes Indonesia home to the third-largest developer community on GitHub in the Asia-Pacific region, after India and China. It is projected to be one of the top five developer communities on GitHub globally by 2026.

Indonesia is also one of the fastest-growing groups in the region, with a 31 percent year-on-year increase in the number of developers on GitHub in 2023. Furthermore, it witnessed 213 percent year-on-year growth in the number of public generative AI projects on the platform in 2023.

Many organizations in Indonesia are boosting their productivity and accelerating innovation using Microsoft’s generative AI-powered solutions. These include DANA , a leading Indonesian fintech company, PT Kereta Api Indonesia , the nation’s major operator of public railways, and Telkomsel , one of Asia’s largest digital telco companies. Other notable examples include:

  • Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) , a 128-year-old bank in Indonesia, is developing four generative AI use cases in less than a year to enhance operational efficiency and service quality. They are a work instruction search engine for faster customer service, a ’content factory’ for streamlining the creation of marketing material, a letter-creation tool to standardize administrative documents, and a digital chatbot called Sabrina to provide transparent financial product information to millions of Indonesians.
  • BUMA , one of the largest reliable mining contractors in Indonesia, started using Copilot for Microsoft 365 in March 2024 to improve the productivity of its workforce. Around 100 employees across the company’s departments are leveraging the tool to optimize their workflows and uncover previously underused features of Microsoft 365.
  • eFishery , the first aqua technology startup based in Asia with a mission to combat world hunger, has launched Mas Ahya (Mr. Cultivation Expert). The solution, powered by Azure OpenAI Service, is designed to provide advice and insights to Asian aqua farmers. It caters to farmers with varying levels of experience and uses everyday language. It will also support multiple local languages, starting with Bahasa Indonesia and Javanese.
  • PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) , the nation’s largest telecommunications provider in the country, has enhanced its coding efficiency since adopting GitHub Copilot in mid-2023. In its early-stage usage, developers are already accepting 20–30 percent of the code suggested by the AI-pair programmer, which leads to increased confidence, productivity, and code quality.
  • Universitas Terbuka , Indonesia’s open and distance learning university, has created an AI Assistant with Azure OpenAI Service in 1,000 virtual classrooms across 10 subjects; empowering up to 60,000 students across provinces. By indexing the teaching materials and grading criteria provided and curated by the lecturers, AI Assistant can help online lecturers evaluate, grade, and suggest improvements to students’ written answers. This real-time feedback encourages students to pay attention to their learning tasks and motivates them to participate more actively, thereby increasing student retention rates and contributing to their overall success.
  • Yayasan Mitra Netra (Mitra Netra Foundation) , a nonprofit organization, used Azure OpenAI Service’s GPT-4 to enable its Arabic Braille Converter to convert Arabic text with harakat in image format to Arabic Unicode. The app, created by a team including non-technical staff members and a programmer who is blind, converts Arabic text with Harakat to Indonesian braille and vice versa, potentially benefiting millions of people with vision impairment.

Ensuring a responsible future in the AI era

Microsoft is actively collaborating with the Indonesian government, civil society, academics, and industry peers to ensure AI serves as a force for good.

In January 2024, Microsoft voluntarily committed to the implementation of AI ethical values highlighted in the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology’s Circular Letter No. 9/2023 .
